Surprisingly, I knew he was alive. Most of these folks I am only aware of their aliveness after the news of their death.
Weeks, Smith, Reddick, Cespedes, Carter, Moss, Inge, Suzuki, Sogard. Everyone where they are expected.

shouldn’t that be a : after death?
I was never the biggest fan of Gore Vidal the author, but he was a great public debater, most famously in slapping down William F. Buckley.
I really liked the empire series. Others took me longer. But he was a fun guy, which is why I liked him
At first I thought this was about George Gore, but then I figured there’s no way he’s still alive. Then I thought of Al Gore, and figured I’d have heard if he died. So then I had no idea until I clicked the link.
I thought it might have been Frank Gore.
Did he invent Gore-Tex?
It might have been Lesley Gore too, but it wasn’t.

Ooh, I forgot about her. An all-time great, to be sure.
yup
finally. music tipper can approve of.
the ex Ms. Gore
I like the idea of Carter in against a righty, but not the idea of Weeks leading off against anyone.
BTW, this is a fantastic quote from MR. Vidal:
Ew
It’s like he’s trying to write in FK taglines.
Don’t we all?
Buddy!
that badminton thing… i blame the organizers. they HAVE to know. it’s not like austria-w.germany 1982 didn’t happen.
But it was embarrassing to watch.
probably just as embarrassing to play that way. but that’s kind of what i’m saying, they were put in that position where to be competitive means something pretty crappy for everyone.
Certainly poorly planned by the organizers – that’s why final round games of group stages are synchronized.
Apparently manipulating the draw in badminton is nothing new … in 2011 there were 99 all-Chinese world class matches and 20 of them ended in a walkover or retirement.
nancy sinatra ponders the same dilemma every day.
Yikes. I like pool play over an elimination tourney, but you have to set it up so that it’s a bigger advantage to have the most points and/or make it impossible to know how you’ll seed next.
Isn’t it pretty obvious how to construct a bracket based on rankings from pool play so that the #1 seed won’t see the #2 seed until the finals, and so on? This is how pretty much every ultimate frisbee tournament works. On day 1, you play in pools; for day 2, they construct a bracket based on 1) record in pool play and 2) point differential in pool play. It doesn’t work perfectly, because some pools might be harder than others, but all teams are incentivized to play well on day 1.
It’s not hard at all. I have no idea how they constructed it, but it’s clearly done idiotically.
Embarrassing/hilarious
It’s like the scene from The Royal Tenenbaums.
I don’t understand why both teams would benefit from losing? Why wouldn’t you want a higher seed?
Could be a matchup thing. One of those where the higher seeded team got really lucky/has a fatal flaw they think they can exploit.
Yes or if there’s an upset in the group you would face. The better team might end up 2nd in Group or something.
IIRC, the full draw was set at the outset and the top seeds had come 2nd in the other group because of a surprise defeat there.
Ah. Got it.
Actually, looks like it was trying to juggle which half of the knock-out bracket they got into to avoid a particular Chinese pair in the semifinals.
I’m guessing it was a desire to try to do a gold/silver medaling for China.
Yeah. The comments at tango’s have the details.
So there.
The “dark, dank” Coliseum? I could see describing some of the ladies’ rooms as dank (I have no knowledge of the gents, but I’m guessing they’re not better) but in general, those seem like strange adjectives for a largely outdoor space.
I suspect Billy is LOLing at being described as “progressive”, too.
‘Nobody’ could possibly disagree.
Apropos that Wavy’s real last name is Romney.
GASP.
Oh FK. Lyle Spencer is on our bandwagon.
The AM station works in the house this time of day by my workstation!!
I literally have to put my foot on top of the little portable radio, but it works!
BP just released Goldstein’s mid-season top 50. The only A’s prospect on it is Straily at #50.
OUR PROSPECTZ R TOO GOOD TO GIVE…
new day, nevermind, got to move on.
Or: Our prospects R too SHITTY to WANT!
Cool, I own three of the top four in my.. oh, wait, nobody cares…
Nah, I don’t think Nobody will care unless you can wrap it into a hoary Marxist/Leninist theoretical construct that can be used to justify an absurd personal hunch.
So, try that.
heh.
How does anyone pull the lever for Mitt Romney?
The man looks like satan. It’s… creepy.
Isn’t Satan supposed to be handsome?
Not to me, no.
Nothing like waking up just as we leave them loaded *sigh*
I say we call this guy “Corny:.
Though Forst would not name names, it’s clear that many teams had interest in Triple-A Sacramento right-hander Dan Straily, who leads all of baseball in strikeouts. According to a source, when the A’s talked to Colorado about Marco Scutaro, Straily was on the Rockies’ wish list, which explains how Scutaro wound up going to the Giants rather than the A’s. Oakland was thinking more along the lines of Fautino De Los Santos, later traded to Milwaukee for George Kottaras.
Straily for Scutaro? LOLROCKIES.
I agree that Straily should have been off limits in basically any trade, with Colon only here 1 season (and old) and McCarthy/Braden/Anderson with injury issues.
of course, he should also be called up sooner rather than later.
Thanks, and go As.
Arrgh… these type of quotes are so irritating because they so obviously miss the point. Oakland (even with Reddick, Cespedes, and Carter all killing balls) has a much worse offense than Texas or LAAAA. They don’t need to pitch better than the A’s, they just need to close the gap in pitching quality and Oakland’s (lack of) offense will do the rest.
Sure, but what do you want Melvin to say?
This is true. It probably does bother him, but he also wants to keep his job.
Can he control what other teams do? Cause if he can, then it should worry him. If he can’t, I’d rather he focus on using the guys he has to win games for us instead of crying about the guys he doesn’t have and/or focused on other team’s ability win instead of our own.
I love Slusser but I think she got taken by her source on this one. The Rockies eventually traded Charlie Culberson, as much of a complete non prospect as anyone, for Scutaro. Given the humongous gulf between Straily and Culberson, it’s unlikely that the Rockies insisted on Straily in the deal to complete the trade or that he was the difference between the A’s getting him or the Giants getting him as the article implies.
And all the article says is he was on their wish list. He’d be on mine too.
Can I have
Dan Straily$5?Yeah. I’m just annoyed at the disingenuous implication that the A’s needed to include Straily in any deal just to make move, even for someone as low cost as Scutaro. I’d rather the A’s not say anything than inspire the wave of post hoc rationalizations the beat writers have been pumping out for why the team stood pat.
Who says it was the A’s saying it?
Slusser made it clear that her information about Straily-Rockies was from a source, not her own speculation.
It makes her sound like a company shill. OMG I’m so happy we did nothing instead of trading Dan Straily for Marco Scutaro. Whew. Dodged a bullet there.
she is one though. this is longstanding policy
Sure. But that’s doesn’t mean the source was the A’s.
Slusser has multiple connections with the A’s and as an excellent reporter, has a track record of reporting something for certain only if it came from those connections.
But sure, clearly her source was most likely a slug monster from Venus.
WTF dude. She does have other sources outside the A’s organization. It’s not entirely uncommon that she might pick up info from them. And some are even reliable. Why is that ANYTHING she reports MUST come from the A’s?
My opinion is that we can usually form a plausible hypothesis given the information we do know. Since this deal concerns the A’s and Rockies, it’s likely that a credible source would have intimate knowledge of the deal and be affiliated with either the A’s or the Rockies. And obviously Slusser, known for her propensity to use credible sources, is also likely to have more credible sources from Oakland’s organization than the Rockies’s. So the most plausible explantion, to me at least, is that Susan used a credible Oakland source.
Your stance, judging from this and the 50 or so comments you left in that other thread lecturing others about stuff they can’t be sure about, seems to be that people can’t ever assume anything because we don’t know everything about anything. Which is just about the perfect stance to adopt for any occasion because it’s untestable and most importantly, unchallengeable. It’d be the perfect argument if it were an argument at all and not actually an argumentum ad ignorantiam fallacy.
So that’s basically what my little joke about the slug monster referred to. We don’t not know that a slug monster is Slusser’s real source.
Wow. This is articulate as hell.
I have no problem with speculation. It’s the confirmation bias, cocky sure as shitness that I see going. Read what she read again. All she said was that Straily was on their wish list. Fucking hell, dude. OF COURSE STRAILY is on EVERYONE’S WISH LIST w/r to the A’s. One thing we can be sure of is that Beane/Forst don’t talk about trades/etc. She even said as much before throwing out the source. We also don’t know how or what was asked. As good a reporter Slusser is, she could just as easily asked “Was Straily brought up?” to which she got a “Well, he was certainly on their wish list.” She needed *something* to fill her story and she likely went with what fit best/made the most sense and as reporters do, typed as such leading some to make a probable false conclusion. We know nothing about the actual negotiations nor the conversation between Slusser and her source. But if you want to believe what best fits your narrative, be my guest. It’s a throw away line (with no quote) that’s being taken as more.
so I am linking here for no reason than I hate grant.
He is of the WC persuasion.
I hope that quote is too long and sbnation sues.
I would like 95.7THEGAME to arrange it so that when I have a half hour to spend during my lunch listening to the A’s, that Vince be barred from the radio booth. Because I’m eating here!
Man, Tampa sure has made a lot of outs on the bases this series. I think that makes 5 at least, maybe more.
This game must be fascinating.
Home runs are interesting!
It just got a bit more Ingegrossing.
Or everyone’s work must be intervening. I had planned to go to this game, but I got assigned to a project that meant I couldn’t have arrived until — well, right about now. Of course, if I’d arrived during the rally, I’d be happy!
You can’t keep the Brandons down!
I’m confused. That wasn’t a pop up.
We needed a SS upgrade so bad, I wanna cry.
You obviously don’t understand chemistry.
I’ll be totally honest, the Lew Wolff appearance in the booth last night made me ill, physically sick.
I missed it, thank god.
It was not to be believed, just stunning that someone like that owns a franchise like this. I was so mad after that inning, it ruined my day.
If it helps, I doubt Fisher is very happy with his performance to date.
Wah Wah Wah. Yawn.
i just turned the game on and we fall apart in the field. Turning it back of to go to a meeting…SOMEONE FIX THIS PLSTHX.
Hooray for scout.
LOL
Jesus. Fucking. Christ.
Your comment is ironic, since Catholics believe that the individual you reference would not have approved of contraception.
Damn you, GOP revisionists! How dare you tarnish the anniversary of MTV’s first broadcast!
I prefer to think of it as Jerry’s 70th.
Well. That article gives me a few names to add to my ‘list of people to punch in the face’.
Did you take me off of it??
Thanks, and go As.
No, there’s still plenty of room on the list, don’t worry, you’re still right after Hemingway.
Ernest or Mariel?
Thanks, and go As.
Why would the gallo brothers be on her list?
She doesn’t like crappy wine?
Thanks, and go As.
Reasonable.
??
i thought margo was the topless one…
What jungle is eric sogard welcoming me to?
The one with fun and games and everything you want.
Elves live in forests, I thought.
indeed!
Rally Pie!
Rays announcers saying that the best music is played at the Coliseum. Harry Connick Jr., the Foreigners…
I think it’s just a coincidence that they’re having this discussion after the 8th inning “Call Me Maybe” interlude.
It is good. That would be my dream job to take over.
Sorry, you’d have to fight me to the death for that job, N.
That’s nice, you apologize for making her hurt you? I kind of think she could take you, though I think you’d give it a very spirited shot. I’d video it though. You know, to make sure you’re remembered.
She does have a very snazzy Marantz recorder, so she definitely has the weaponry advantage. I, however, have 13TB of recorded music and literally millions of ideas to make the music in-game the best in the history of all sports, so it should be a battle.
Oh, I was thinking she’s just pound you to a pulp with her bare hands, but your way might be interesting too.
You make it sound like you’d like to see this happen. You already said you’d film it.
Yes…?
better, uncensored version
Awww… cute! Looks photoshopped though.
LOL! You are such an ass.
I am!
I’ve never heard the song and I’m quite grateful for that.
Me neither/too.
Man, I can’t imagine how it’s possible to have completely avoided this odious, insipid little tune. It’s the song of the summer of 2012. Next thing you’ll be telling me that you’ve never heard Party Rock Anthem.
I’ve only heard “Call Me Maybe” in the background of A’s broadcasts. “Party Rock Anthem” I heard a million times during ESPN’s U.S. Open tennis coverage. I actually grew to like it.
Oddly enough, the first time I heard it was when JamesV posted that silly video of the Harvard baseball team lip-syncing to it.
This one is silly awesome!
Any Izzie news?
She got adopted and returned :( I guess the guy who adopted her lost his job and so he couldn’t keep her.
Aw. Too bad.
Dang.
Was it that song or some other one? I don’t remember.
Nope. Not knowingly so.
Never even heard of that one.
LMFAO.
Smiling politely.
I know I hear it at the games and I have seen the harvard thing, but it does not stick in my mind. Its gone now
the foreigners? they must be talking about cespedes’ salsa walk-up…
Bomb threat at San Antonio airport …
Poop.
August is the worst.
WORST MONTH EVER.
That game was bullshit.
I am using drugs to avoid the malevolent thoughts creeping into my head that this is the 2011 Pittsburgh Pirates.
This team sucks.
No, no. The baseball players are exactly what I expect, maybe better. The stadium is OK by me. the food? meh, not a food person.
But fuck it all, is it too much to ask to have fucking t-shirts for children at the mother fucking game? You know they have XXL Inge shirts. they have a few adult cespedeses. The past 4 games I have gone to I have gone to multiple stores and asked for small shirts. I get shut down everytime. I was gonna break down and but a (still too big) small weeks shirt today, but alas, three games into a homestand none of the 5 shops I stopped by had even ONE. Fucking idiots, I am trying to spend money on your product that costs $1 to produce.
Not even online? That is odd.
Its not obvious online.
I just started looking right now (I quit because its not easy and will try at work tomorrow). I like buying the kids stuff at the game, it makes it special.
Marketing sucks…I know, I know, nothing we didn’t know
Did they have hotdogs? Cause they once ran out, early in the home stand, early in the game.
That’s like… running out of beer at a NASCAR race.
Or its corollary, running out of red Solo cups at a Toby Keith show.
The family version-running out of fries at McDonalds.
sorry i never caught up with you.
you have kids shirts?
PS, those FK season tickets were awesome. Row 6 instead of the usual 10-11.
I hope we can do it again next year.
you looked comfy.
i just made you a custom kid’s T-shirt on the A’s online store with theo’s name and favorite number on the back, athletics on front, elephant on sleeve, A’s on other sleeve… only $40!!
what you missed today was Theo was wearing a Giambi shirt that I bought in 2009(?) at the half off sale at the end of the year (Giambis’ dad was a friend of my uncle in COvina) with tape over the name where I wrote “Reddick”
oh. so you already have a custom.
it was cozy, no screaming kids. Did you catch:
a) the dancing during the call me maybe?
b) mass exodus afterwards?
Speaking of screaming kids. I have to ask, when (or hopefully just if) your kids starts screaming (actual screaming and/or just yelling out loud whatever) in the middle of a store, do you act like it’s no big deal and perfectly acceptable? I mean, I don’t expect a parent to yell at them or anything, but damn, frequently I see them chatty as if it’s nothing.
On the flip side, this afternoon I saw this little girl on a bike while her mom walked the dog, little girl raced up to the curb/sidewalk. Stopped. Without being prompted, hopped off her bike. Waited. Mom reaches her and she, the girl, and the dog walk across the street together, the little walking the bike across on her own. It just struck me as really cool.
Screaming in public is not OK. If they start, I take them away from the situation. If it means leaving a basket full of icecream in the store so be it.
My kids rarely (I can only think of one instance where they walked off a curb without us. they can be running full tilt, riding scooting whatever 10 yards away and they will stop at the corner. I attribute it to being city kids, but it could be the parenting. who knows/
I’d guess parenting myself. Seems like those who care to parent (with some exceptions both way) tend to have kids who actually act appropriately without losing what it is that makes them kids. I’ve never met your kids, but all I’ve heard are good things about them and I’d venture to say it has a lot to do with how they were raised.
for sure there are kids that don’t respond well to typical parenting stuff. it makes it hard. it isn’t necessarily the parents fault
Also, ignoring the problem (as in screaming, not when junior runs into traffic) is an important parental strategy. Though not one that relieves you of having to be decent to bystanders.
This so much.
Just because your primary duty is to look after your child doesn’t relieve you of any responsibility to the innocent bystanders.
Every flight with a young Lily we always carried ear plugs and fancy chocolates enough for the 3 neighboring rows, just in case.
Sigh.
yup. Hang in there
It’s actually gotten much better lately in general, at least in terms of how Spawn1 responds to and gets along with Mrs. PDX and me.
Unfortunately, in the last 48 hours, Mrs. PDX’s aunt stepped down as a babysitter for the remainder of the summer (really just the last week of August at this point), as she tried to use a “typical parenting style” (circa 1955) with Spawn1, after which he ended up leaving the house and either walking around the block (his story) or about seven blocks away (her story), until a nice passerby saw him and walked him home. Which is why your comment resonated.
We’re actually kind of happy that the aunt will not be a caregiver for the remainder of the summer, as it was not a good fit and we’ve already found a better solution for the one week that she was going to be with him. The saddest part is that it will effect both his and Mrs. PDX’s relationship with the aunt.
bummer and yay.
My mom trys old school styles with my kids and it drives me up the wall. She lives 7 hours away so we usually can avoid it
Trying to hone your parenting skillz?
Bitch, please. Like I’m going to have kids, I know where my ****’s been.
Let’s run away and have kitties together.
Sure, why not.
So that’s where your **** has been?
As long as there’s pussy, I’m happy. And if there’s a woman around too, I’m thrilled.
the great leader is dm’s dick??
That…explains a lot.
Seven holes-in-one in a single round!
This explains why we are fucked.
If I’m “dm” then yes, yes it does.
i certainly didn’t mean this guy:
BTW this was our angle
i’m in the shot!
Me too. Sort of. I mean, I’m like just to the left of that shot and about 30 – 40 miles back. But I’m there!
yes, but its hard to make out the commoners in “Value” deck
FKing privileged bastard!
we. are. the value deck percent. we. are. the value deck percent.
so hour killed. no small player shirts on the internets. seem to start at medium
You just need to fat up, dude.
Oh my fucking god, this always infuriated me too. For year after year, when one or both of my kids were in the 3-7 y.o. age range, I would arrive at ballgames with a wallet full of cash planning on spending money, then walking away empty handed because the stupid franchise stocked literally nothing which would fit my kids. They stock infant stuff, and then nothing until ages 10-12 or so. I’d check every one of the stadium stores, every time. I did manage to snag actual cool Stomper dolls in 2003 or so, which they them stopped carrying also (which were first replaced by ghastly rally elephants with monkey-like elongated limbs, and then the current, grossly inferior hand puppets).
It is fun to spend money on kids at games. Over maybe a seven year period, until my kids got almost big enough to fit what they sell as “Youth Small” sizes, I was probably prepared to cumulatively spend $300-500 on clothes and crap, and the team decided to make that impossible. Furthermore, the experience so embittered me that once my kids did start fitting what they have, I consciously chose not to buy it directly from the team, shopping at places like Sports Authority and Target instead of the Coliseum. Stupid stupid franchise. I cannot imagine that any other team is so ridiculously inept in this regard.
No Oakland Oaks jerseys on throwback day.
Such incompetence/indifference.
Yeah, but a sale on girl onesies got my dollars.
Awww!
It’s interesting that, almost right away, the Philly A’s hat could be purchased online. No sign of the Oaks one.
I was just watching a rebroadcast on CSN of the Earthquakes game from the weekend, which featured a fawning mid-game interview of Lew Wolff by (I think) Kara from the A’s games. She asked him how wonderful it is that the team is doing so well (they are in first place out of 19 teams), and he answered by saying how happy he is that they are doing it without a “designated player.” For those who don’t know, each team in MLS is allowed to sign three DPs, and pay them higher — sometimes much, much higher — wages than what’s allowed for run-of-the-mill players under the salary cap. The Quakes don’t avail themselves of that opportunity.
His statement may have been intended as a dig at the LA Galaxy, who have three rather famous DPs and are looking up at the Quakes, but it also seems to reveal something of the man’s pride in trying to win on the cheap.
Our not-easy-to-live-with roommate just moved out and left for good this evening. While this means my rent for the month just shot up, I’m quite pleased with not having to deal with them anymore. Fortunately, we’re moving into a nicer (and considerably cheaper) place pretty soon, so hooray, progress!
also ending a drawn-out domestic debacle, i just found my toenail clippers!
Well done, my friend.
Considering how frequently I lose mine and how much time I’ve spent looking for them myself, I genuinely applaud your success.
You guys should just bite them off. That’s what I do.
That… tends not to work as well as I’d like. Weird edges, strip off the outer most layer, somehow cause unnecessary lasting pain. But then I keep my nails ultra short to avoid that very thing. I may have a problem… or two… or three… or lots.
Toenails too?
Bitch, please. I don’t bite my fingernails. I know where I’ve been.
So yes on the toenails. After all, they’ve been nicely tucked away in comfy shoes all day.
Hell, at work too. When I get nervous, I slip off my shoes and just go at it. Like fking popcorn.
You must be very flexible, then.
I’m intrigued.
Thanks, and go As.
yay! Progress!
Giants fans are giving Hunter Pence an extended standing ovation. THe announcers are saying it looks like the fans have heard of him. I disagree
I hope he pulls a
Beltreerr… um… what Mikev said.I hope he pulls a Beltran.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s a few years old but this is a great read.
tl;gslatp.hs.ctmeooi.
It gave me space cake flashback.
Wow. Hard to imagine trying to keep it together in those circumstances.
Wow indeed. I can imagine trying to keep it together; I cannot imagine succeeding, not with the hallucinations he describes.
It just hit me. I work in the NICU next semester. At a REAL hospital. I am scared.
But! I got my license in the mail today!
Congrats
Woot Woot. I think my SIL did some time in one recently. But I get to hear the stories every now in then.
That’s a whole lot of handle with care. Also ick…people don’t really have any idea how omnipresent Ick is in a nurse’s day. Of course, infants can only produce so much.
PICU and NICU. At a real children’s hospital. I’m scare to death, and it’s at least a month away.
A comforting thought to Missouri parents, no doubt.
You will of course do fantastically well and bring care and comfort to your patients and colleagues.
And perhaps snack on a few rotten kids.
Or her toenails?
Their toenails.
Just imagine, for a moment, what the headline in your local newspaper would look like if that actually happened.
Heh.
comforting thought
Which part?
Yes, that was the smartass first remark I chose to counter my sincere second one. Cause otherwise I’d have sounding too mushy, and not at all rough and dangerous in the sexy style I so carefully cultivate.
If I don’t have at least 10mg of morphine an hour on board, I just don’t function.
So that’s what was going on last night.
Uh-oh.
I know enough to know I don’t want any part of it.
YAY!
Guess who.
Yeah, unfortunately it is a bit too technical to get explained in a five-second quip on a newscast. Because it’s pretty clear that either a) he doesn’t really plan to cut the top tax rates that much, b) he doesn’t actually want to reduce the deficit, c) he wants to raise taxes on middle class and lower, d) he wants to slash the crap out of Medicare/Medicaid, or e) incompetent. I’m sure that a) is not true. Both c) and d) are going to be pretty FKing tough politically, even for people this sneaky/slimy. So I have to go with a combination of b) and e).
But the “ironclad” description seems pretty apt to me, so I really hope that this actually gets publicized.
Reducing the deficit only seems to be a Republican policy when in opposition … once in power there’s always just one more tax to cut and/or small country to invade.
Yep. But don’t discount incompetence! I’m sure there are quite a few policy staffers on that campaign who buy into revenue enhancing tax cuts.
Exactly. Nearly all of the largest ticket deficit spending items are GOP policies (Bush tax cuts, Part D, and Iraq, to name three).
The profile of Paul Ryan in the current New Yorker includes this nugget:
Meanwhile, his own plan is quite explicit about tax cuts for the rich, but vague about the spending reductions that are supposed to balance them out. And of course, he just voted with the rest of his party to extend those deficit-exploding Bush tax cuts again.
Politicians doing the opposite of what they say is nothing new, of course, but the brazenness here is especially impressive.
Agreed.
i have dropped my half-baked supergeneralized theory here before, right? dem/rep are two sides of the same national economic-psychology coin. all elections do is measure how the national psyche is feeling between expend/expand and replenish/recover, where each period basically enables the other. save enough, and the swing vote feels like it’s OK to risk an expenditure. expand too much, and it feels like it’s time to draw in. it seems like they’re ideas competing for the rule of the country, but really they are ideas that cooperate toward, well, where we are now, just more of it.
It used to be that way, kind of. Not so much any more.
Except that’s an inaccurate description of the parties’ policies.
reminder: supergenralized!
but that’s the reason i’m bringing in the psychological. the subject doesn’t consciously know what the subject is doing so the subject can’t articulate it, and what the subject does articulate is self-deception and projection.
and don’t forget: half baked!
Sure. I think it’s less that and more tribal. I think somewhere between 90 and 95% of the country’s voters are permanently locked in (at least on presidential candidates). The fact that some of them tell pollsters they are “undecided” doesn’t mean much.
I think our country’s only real hope is that either immigration / boomer die-off returns us to sanity or that someone somewhere in the GOP can isolate from the crazies. I think the latter is unrealistic at this point.
‘splain tribal. not sure i know what you mean.
and i’m with you about some people locked in. that’s why i’m saying the swing vote is the measure. definitely some stay in their extremes. but that’s the thing of what i’m saying, the back n’ forth “competition” is actually a self-sustaining cooperation. if the country acted (overgeneralized) republican always, it would expend itself out of existence or suffer a revolt. if the country acted (overgeneralized) democrat always, it wouldn’t be the world-influential superpower that it is (it might be a different one, but not the one that it is. i guess i threw my obvious bias into this one.).
I mean that people live in areas that are pretty segregated by political opinion (on both sides), and want to have the lawn sign their neighbors have / watch the TV their friends watch (say, Fox) / etc.
So your political party affiliation (which, let’s face it, is the primary determination of your presidential vote) is something that isn’t really based upon who has the right view of climate change or whatever. It’s based upon your identity and which tribe you belong to.
I disagree with you that there is any kind of meaningful swing vote right now.
hm, ok. i’d agree with that but i’m not sure what you’re saying and what i’m saying cancel each other out.
i’ll take your word on the current swing vote because i, frankly, got rage fatigued very early and haven’t kept up other than scandal-of-the-day watching. and wondering who the hell (probably a dead person, and i don’t mean when they were alive, i mean 3 or 4 days after) romney’s face reminds me of.
arianna on scandal of the day watching. she’s got a great point. however, i’m noticing a lot of the liberal media hounds (and i’m not accusing the media overall of being liberal, i’m saying the hounds in the media who are liberal and oughta stay that way) are nuancing their arguments. jon stewart for example, calling out mayors who are talking smack about chicken fillet (fuck ’em, i know how to spell basic words out). this is NOT the time to do that. the conservative counterparts aren’t nuancing around. but the liberals, by being reasonable, are causing internal debate (which would be fine in a reasonable time and climate), while the conservatives are not letting up with the negligent argumentation. this is how schartzneggers get elected, with a highjacked discourse. when someone says A and the response is not-A, then A is the discourse. and if the not-A camp stars talking about provisions for when A might be okayish, that’s IT, done deal! i really wish they’d stop that. when someone says A, just say B. ignore A. if someone wants to debate whether climate change exists, do not engage. say instead, this is how we’re planning to stop climate change. make them have to engage your topic, for once. if they say we support some establishment because it supports some archaic viewpoint ambiguously stated in ancient texts, ignore it and say instead, we support compulsorty public education in reading comprehension and comparative mythologies, let’s talk about that. wisen up libs, frickin jugularate the media outlets with ridiculous knee-jerk accusatory crap that makes no sense and forces discourse. that’s the only way anymore. and that’s the end of my baseless morning rant.
Welcome to the democratic circular firing squad.
I hate its results, but like that my party isn’t a 100% spin zone. And I have no idea how to reconcile that.

Wow. That is uncanny.
That second one is scary. But then I’ve always thought Mitt looked like Satan. Just put on a red coat, add some horns, and maybe replace the gray with a little red.
redditt would love that. you should post it.
oh, i didn’t make that. it’s going around FB so i’m sure it’ll be on redditt soon if not already.
Oh. I’m sure its there then.
Wow, that’s the first time somebody has suggested that my expiration is part of the solution to the country’s problems. I think the truth is, all generations migrate to the right as they age.
Maybe, but not this way.
Before the boomers aged we were able to do things like provide good public colleges and build/maintain modern infrastructure. This is the first generation that has preferred radically reduced taxes to things like that, and it started before they got old.
Obviously not talking about a specific human being, or actually calling for any deaths. I’d much prefer a collective come-to-Jesus.
My general thought about the Boomers’ political orientation is that we were the first generation to be given huge reasons to distrust the federal government in our formative years. It was the youngest Boomers who were drafted in the LBJ/Nixon years and came home from Vietnam in boxes and then you had Watergate which permanently altered our perception of politicians. If you don’t agree with the philosphies of the owners of Chick-Fil-A you don’t support them by buying chicken sandwiches, and if you don’t trust politicians to do what’s right the most effective punishment is to withhold tax dollars from them, self-defeating though it may be.
“I’m not saying America has an obesity problem, but our civil rights debates now hinge on fried chicken.” -Ben Kuchera
Thanks, and go As.
I think there’s some selfishness in “withhold[ing] tax dollars” that plays more of a role than you’re letting on, but I do agree with the points about Watergate/Vietnam. Of course, that’s also where a lot of people learned about Hippie Punching for the first time.
That’s awfully simplistic to the point of being outright wrong nm.
The proponents and beneficiaries (at the time) of Prop. 13 in 1978 were mostly not boomers, but the generation older than them. Likewise Reagan’s main constituency was people born in the 20s and 30s, not Alex P. Keatonesque Young Republicans. And even today, the oldest boomers are just a couple of years into retirement age, so they are mostly not part of the “government hands off my medicare” crowd.
What is true w.r.t. the boomers is that
1) The boom itself will cause some of the strain on Social Security and Medicare (and on the economy in general) as we have more retirees and fewer workers. (As you will surely point out, some of this could be alleviated by allowing more immigration, but that’s a separate issue).
2) As gonealookin sahys, people do become more conservative as they age, both in a “back in my day” social sense and a “I got mine” economic sense, and many boomers are at that age.
3) They’re also starting to benefit from those policies that they probably opposed 20 years earlier. And he proponents of gutting the social safety net are pandering to that demographic, with their proposals to maintain Medicare as-is for 10 years and then gut it. I’m pretty sure as an Xer I’m fked.
I’m not sure what Reagan’s election has to do with my point (except that it probably did inspire a generation of conservatives since he is subject to hagiographic treatment). Heck, Reagan actually increased taxes when he saw the need for revenue.
Since Reagan, and as boomers have aged, the GOP has moved ever rightward, and tax rates dramatically lower than Reagan’s are now somehow socialist.
Prop 13 is a much clearer connection, and you are right that the 1978 beneficiaries were not boomers. But it would be simplistic to the point of being outright wrong to say that passage of that law in 1978 is the reason we can’t have nice things. The reason we can’t have nice things is that our political culture makes that law unchangeable, even in modest ways. And that’s not the fault of people born in the 20s.
On your numbered points:
1. Sure. Social security is an easy one-time fix with a number of different options. Medicare is a whole different thing because of the explosion in medical costs. Trying to adopt the Heritage foundation’s remedy, though, makes you a raving socialist.
2. True, but more conservative than what? Given our starting point, and your argument that boomers have a bunch more aging to do, why is this something that should provide comfort?
3. One of the things that will be interesting to see is whether prison spending starts to lose GOP support in states that refuse to collect much revenue but cannot deficit-spend. And yes, people our age are fked unless we can change course.
The relevance of Prop 13 and Reagan is that (as you say) they’re the modern roots of the trend toward “small government” – i.e. starving the next generation of good schools, decent infrastructure, the social safety net, and the other advantages that they themselves had enjoyed. The boomers were by no means the first generation to engage in that behavior; the “political culture” you speak of was one they inherited.
Likewise, point (2) is not supposed to provide comfort – the boomers probably won’t be the last generation to do that either.
But Reagan didn’t kill that stuff. It’s only really dying now/recently.
Elvis wasn’t the first man to play rock and roll, but he was still The King.

What’s interesting is that the percent of true undecideds has gone down significantly even since 2008.
Yep. Of course, that article completely ignores GOTV.
We agree A is false. B is certainly true, or at least whether he wants to or not he cares more about cutting taxes. C is probably not true, though like B is suborned to lowering top rates (this is exactly what the “flat tax” the GOP loves would do after all). D is absolutely not true, except as a rhetorical device when Obama is in power. E is true.
I think it’s simpler than this. The GOP exists to reduce taxes and increase military spending. At all times. Period. If they have enough momentum they’ll throw a bone to social conservatives/NRA members/libertarians, but tax cuts and military spending are priorities one and two. Followed by a huge gap.
In the women’s beach volleyball game airing right now on Pacific Time NBC,
.
Shitty coverage by NBC on that match.
Seriously…
. I’m mostly letting TV set what and when I watch, because I don’t have the time to do the work to follow things online, but I’m pretty sure this’ll be the last time. NBC really demonstrates what a dinosaur the TV platform is for something like this.
I cannot even watch the NBC coverage online. It says my cable package/provider isn’t supported. I’ve been watching CTV from Canada, and I enjoy it.
While you were away… all this awesome shit happened… but we’re not going to show you… instead we’ll show you a douche talk about social networking as if it has meaning for 5 minutes.

Yes. That is the question isn’t it. Or better just why at all? The man is famous for having done nothing.
Someone has to tell America what is cool!
Wait. You mean I didn’t get the job???!!! This??? This is how I find out???!! WTF. W. T. F.
You should have known, Matty.
sniffle. I was going to tell the world about masturbation. And the anal sex.
I’m not sure why they didn’t hire you.
ik,r??!!
I’m pretty sure Seacreep has more experience in both if you’re picking up what I’m putting down.
Be that as it is. He still doesn’t talk enough about it and, quite frankly, I’d rather not hear that from him anyway someone else has gots to step it up and get the message out, if you’re seeing what I’m putting down so someone else can pick it up.
How about Rowdy Gaines to spread the message?
Man is he annoying as fk. That squeaky excited voice shrilling all the time.
He’s also wrong A LOT. He’d probably fk up a rock fight.

I feel like I should be calling or texting in to vote for my favorite athlete.
I was more interested in the second set because it was totally a blow out. I would have liked to see May and Walsh make a comeback after dropping the first set. But noooo. I also would have liked to watch more of men’s gymnastics. They literally showed one routine from a medalist and said, “This is our first viewing of [blahblah].” Really? Thanks. I’m assuming this person only competed in the rotation you aired.
But… but… but then there wouldn’t be enough time for all those “human interest“ stories!!!
I was interested in this human!
Yeah. I watched the men’s all-around gymnastics online yesterday morning — the first event I’ve watched online — and it was SO much better than what was shown during primetime last night. On the AV Club, one of the reviewers talked about how NBC shapes their primetime coverage into basically a reality show instead of a sporting event, since they know how the stories will play out and edit the footage accordingly.
And the funny thing is, all three of the men’s gymnastics medalists were great stories on their own, since there were some surprises and some last-minute errors (not that you would really know it from only watching primetime). But of course, that would have forced NBC to acknowledge a country other than the US.
yep yep yep. there might be a whole generation of TV producers/editors who are trained to turn 1 minute footage of regular life into half an hour of heightened drama, with teasers. at this point they might not even know or remember any better.
Wow, great job, LAA.

Is an old trombone similar to a rusty trombone? If so, I think AARP just had a commercial about it.
I’m not one to be unduly afraid of plane crashes, but this sounds horrifying:
So the pilots on the inbound plane are doing their usual landing prep routine, talking with the tower, checking their descent angles, whatever, and all of a sudden not one but two outbound planes takeoff directly towards them. Aieeee!
Aaaah.
On my last two flights on American, there have been 2-3 hour delays because of mechanical problems that, in both cases, were not noticed until we were taxiing away from the gate. On the one hand, I’m glad the error notification lights worked and that they fixed the plane / put us on a different one… but on the other hand, why was the problem not noticed until the plane was full of passengers and almost ready to take off?
Something similar happened to me on SWA: my flight started somewhere east, and in the air they noticed a problem. Landed, unloaded, spent 3 hours fixing it, and we were on our way. I don’t understand how they didn’t notice until the first leg was in the air.
“Where’s the pilot?” “OH shit, I knew we forgot something!!!”
Our SEA-DEN flight last week was delayed for about 45 minutes because the flight crew hadn’t arrived yet from their previous flight. What I really don’t understand is why they bother boarding us if they know that there’s no way we can take it off. Sitting around in the terminal isn’t may favorite way to pass the time, but it sure the hell beats sitting for an hour on the airplane with two kids getting increasingly antsy.
Yeah.
I have had that on bad weather days.
This is why it’s important for pilots to listen to all calls and get the whole picture of where traffic is. Just yesterday, I was taking off from Livermore and just before I made a left turn outbound, I heard another aircraft cleared inbound from the same direction. This is a pretty minor thing; I’m sure if I’d turned, I’d have been told something, but still, shows the importance of keeping track of the other planes in the area.
In this case, if the inbound aircraft were talking to approach and the outbound were talking to the tower, they’d still have no way of knowing (!).
Not only have I seen the longest game in River Cats history this season (5:32, 18 innings), tonight I saw their shortest this year (2:05).

Can someone do me a favor?
I want to buy a T-shirt for my friend’s 40th. I found a Seattle Pilots one that I’m pretty sure he’d love here, but they only ship to the US. Can someone with PayPal buy that for me and then send it my address in Germany and I’d PayPal $25 plus whatever S&H costs?
Also, an advice on US sizes needed. The person in question is 6″ 180lb. Is that an L?
I think it could be L or XL, depends on the brand.
Your link doesn’t work, but I’d be happy to do that.
awesome – thanks!
I fixed the link. Should I send you $25 now and then the rest when you find out what it would cost you to ship it to Germany, or do you want me to wait until you find out and send you all in one transaction?
You can send your PayPal e-mail to bojan[dot]koprivica[at]holzfeder[dot]com.
Thanks a lot!
6’0″, 180 lbs is my size exactly (OK, maybe 185+ when I’m a bit flabby like now), and I always buy XL teeshirts, which allows for the inevitable bit of shrinkage you get from all-cotton tees.
OK, XL it is, thanks!
Pff. I’ve got you beat by like 15 lbs.
You’re taller though. :\
Thanks, and go As.
I would actually go with just a large, but I guess it depends on how snug you like your t-shirts. I’m 6’0″, 165 lbs and L is way too big for me. I guess that erring on the big side is probably safer, since returns would be a major hassle for this case.
Really? I would go with large. Im 6’1 168 I usually get mediums
skinny bastard
Thanks, and go As.
thats with shoes on.
From my own experience US numbers are bigger than European ones, sometimes egregiously so. I went to Diamondbacks opening day few years ago, and they were giving away the t-shirts. I’m 5’11” 160 and had to take youth size for it to fit
USA! USA!
I was thinking about this today, At the Coliseum, there aren’t even shirts that fit me.
I am a small fella, 5’5 3/4″ 7-8 stone.
skinny bastard…
Thanks, and go As.
skinny bastard.
Thanks, and go As.
In fairness, MLB has a weird tendencies to be bigger than normal even for around here. About a half size so.
I’m taller than el croata? shit in some small way I tower over the legend… this make my day.
He meant to say that he’s 5’11” sitting down.
That’s certainly how I read it.
Oh, wait, you were talking about the entire body?

Jeff Fletcher tweets a rumor that Straily will be called up today
If that’s happening then Colon is either DL or traded.
Thanks, and go As.
Coco headed to the DL? Doesn’t explain what Straily will be doing in an A’s uniform, though. Nobody currently in the rotation seems like they should be in imminent danger of removal. I suppose they could be going six man…
Doolittle to CF, Straily to bullpen
Crisp to DL, Carter to SS, Doolittle to CF, Straily to rotation, Colon to DH
Thanks, and go As.
Let’s trade back for Brett Wallace, now that he’s playing shortstop. I’m serious, btw. About him having played shortstop, not about trading for him
Brett Wallace is playing SS?
Wait. Brett Wallace is playing SS?
Not for Houston, but he played five or six games for their AAA affiliate just prior to being called up
Wow
Colon – specialty pinchrunner
I don’t want to EVER be in a situation where Colon is required to be a pinch runner
Running over the catcher at home plate specialist.
He won’t ever actually run, but he’ll give the catcher such a fright that he’ll misplay a ball and we’ll win the game.
I’m thinking of how much more awesome that Cowgill-Timmeh collision would have been if it was Bartolo.
We’d have been spared a lot of “What’s the matter with Timmy?”….instead, he would be in the record books next to Ray Chapman.
No, we’d get the constant “We can’t allow players to run into people at the plate wah wah wah” for months again.
On the other hand, kinetic energy is 1/2 * m * v^2, so Cowgill’s double speed just about makes up for his quarter mass.
Some of your nerd just splashed in my eye.
Git it off me!! Git it off me!!! Ew Ew Ew!!!
On the other other hand, Colon would have twice the momentum.
I would work out the kinematics, but I’m pretty sure this is a highly inelastic collision.
I bet Colon wears a LOT of elastic actually.
They are caled Spanx.
What about surface area?
Fortunately the spherical approximation works well for Colon.
NERD!
I got a Cowgill-Hultzen play in Tacoma that was much less…dangerous. This was after a wild pitch.
Resizing to make them a lot smaller here, but you can always view the originals. Just haven’t finished that game’s pics yet (it was the 18-inning one) so they’re not in the galleries.
I was at a game where Landon Powell was used as a pinch runner.
I can’t believe you didn’t include Barton to 3B.
Barton -> SS

May as well call up Brad Peacock to play short.

Thanks, and go As.
So, Sogard is gone, and the merry-go-round of utility suckfest continues. Still intrigued by whom Straily would be replacing.
Straily and Colon are both on-turn for tonight, and why would you bring Straily up today if it’s not for tonight’s start?
If it’s for bullpen duty, then I’m going to just bang my head on this desk until they start him.
[ships helmet]
I think we all will.
Good point. Colon hasn’t sucked nearly enough to be cut for nothing, so hopefully he’s been traded for something useful. It can’t be THAT useful, though, unless the A’s are taking on some bad money, too.
The waiver period wouldn’t have cleared yet though, right?
Thanks, and go As.
It can. I looked up transactions for the last couple of years, and there have been trades before on August 2.
Hm. I suppose if someone claimed a player and then a trade was done with the claiming team, that would be possible.
In any event, Slusser thinks Hicks and Jim Miller get sent down, Blackley goes to the pen, and Straily gets Blackley’s start tomorrow.
Thanks, and go As.
That would probably make sense overall.
I suppose that makes sense. Not sure what Blackley did to warrant a demotion, but oh well. Maybe they want to find out if Straily can handle the bigs well enough to justify shipping out Colon or McCarthy.
Blackley’s just the odd man out where the rotation is concerned. Do you think he’d still be starting once McCarthy & Anderson are back, then Braden at some point?
He’s been a great find and a great story, but he doesn’t really have a place in the rotation when everyone else is healthy.
It really should be a 6 man. It would limit everyone’s innings, and give more rest to those who look like they need it (Parker, Milone, Blackley).
Wouldn’t be against trying that.
It shortens the pen though.
Given Braden won’t be back until September, I’d stick him in the bullpen for the rest of the year.
Hopefully Melvin at least uses Blackley in high leverage situations. He’s been better this year than anyone in the bullpen other than Doolittle.
It’s going to be a very lefty heavy bullpen, and one of the righties (Scribner) is the worst/least experienced guy. It will be interesting to see how Melvin uses it.
The traditional thing would be to keep Miller around for tonight in case you need mop-up service, but I suppose they would be letting the cat out of the bag anyway by pulling Straily from his Sacramento start.
Less about surprise and more about maximizing your roster.
One purely personal level, having the front row seats for Straily’s first start would be awesome.
Hopefully Ray will ask me about it …
That would be sweet!
you have them, then?
I have all 5, yes.
no need for your pi banner then.
I assume when you bring that out, it will have 12 places and the 13th ready to go?
After the recent pie-man antics, it’s all feeling a bit sharky-jumpy.
Personally I hope Reddick breaks Rosales’ nose with a pie and puts an end to the whole thing.
I want to see a pie catapult that launches them across the field.
Or pie the opposing pitcher as he walks off the mound. Really rub it in.
May I suggest having a pic of Salma at the ready if we need to rally?
What are the chances that Colon cleared waivers at some point this season? I don’t remember hearing anything about it, and those things, despite being secret, usually seem to leak out.
Unless I’m mistaken, I believe he would have to clear waivers after the deadline before he could be traded.
Thanks, and go As.
This is correct based on my reading of the Major League Rules (2008 version, could have been changed). Trade waivers are a special type of waiver that is required from August 1 to the end of the season. Waivers obtained prior to 7/31 don’t apply. The first deadline for asking for an August trade waiver on a player would have been yesterday at 11 a.m. and the earliest the player could clear would be tomorrow at 10 a.m.
I’m sure there are plenty of teams that would claim him off waivers, right? He is owed less than $1M for the rest of this season and then becomes a free agent. He’s no Roy Halladay, but he would be an upgrade over pretty much everyone’s fifth starter.
Maybe they worked out a deal with the claiming team? The suspense is killing me.
Can’t be anything MLB ready if they’re calling up Rosales as well.
And to think I just saw him pitch in Stockton 13 months ago.
I saw him pitch in Reno 5 days ago!
Thanks, and go As.
I saw a chicken walking around in a drainage ditch 2 days ago!

Close enough.
Hey, someone put up a new thread so we can fill it with our Straily hopes and dreams.
Anyone can. ;-)
And I did.
Yup. Unstoppable with teh 314 OBP at the top of the lineup
If the last two games are any indication, I want him back in there.
And you’re not painting a full picture by citing his full-season OBP. In July he put up a .342/.388/.562/.989 line and for the season has a .364 OBP batting leadoff compared to .257 in the 2-spot.
he has been much better. I hope that is just him regressing to his career norm (not that they are great)
Hopefully. He was complete crap before this, but the past month has justified him being up there in the order. Weeks sure hasn’t earned it.
weeks look good getting hit by a pitch.
Sure wish he would have attempted a steal earlier in the first. And despite the error, the FK season tickets were awesome for that sequence:
1) Moss tossed the foul ball just before that pitch over our heads
2) the smack of weeks’ glove and the the torque on it was cool to hear/see a few feet away
3) the subsequent DP was right in our line of sight, it looked really impressive, (as did most throws to first.)
Yeah, the family and I really enjoyed that viewing angle at the game we attended in those seats.
At the very least it gets Weeks out of that spot.
