Another new thread to keep FK seasonably appropriate on the eve of Bowl Season. It starts tomorrow with seven games, the last of which features our local heroes Cal in Shreveport LA, a town named after an Army Corps of Engineers captain named Shreve. Cal will battle traditional rivals Texas Tech, with whom they are destined to be mates in a future “Every Team in America Except the Good Ones” conference. Go Bears! You betcha!
And if you’re not watching the new season of Fargo yet you’re missing out.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Fresno State also plays tomorrow, vs New Mexico State, and UCLA squares up against Boise State, all four also future members of the ETAEGO conference. Fresno State and Cal are both 3.5 point underdogs, while UCLA is favored by 5.5.
I was supposed to have a colonoscopy yesterday, there was, however a band I really wanted to see on wednesday, so instead of having irritable bowls at bottom of the hill, I put off the “procedure” to the 28th.
My verdict is, it’s not so bad. The hunger sucks. the prep is gross. The diarrhea is completely manageable (having a bidet helps). It’s over quickly.
That was my thought about it too, that the 48 hours beforehand is the pain in the ass, not the actual procedure, even though you’re not completely knocked out (at least I wasn’t).
I hope you got the “you’re clean as a whistle in there, I’ll see you in ten years” bye-bye from the doctor. And that they have sent you or will send you some pretty pictures of your insides as a souvenir.
Begin polyps. I got the 5 year follow up.
“the anesthesia should take about ten sec…..”
[wakes up in recovery]
This was my experience and results as well. And yeah the beforehand is just annoying. But have a good series of books next to the can and it’s fine.
We are saving up Fargo on the DVR to binge in a few weeks.
We’ll see how it finishes but so far for me it’s in contention (with seasons 1 and 2) to be the best one yet.
More than halfway through it now, and also liking it a lot.
Juno Temple is fantastic. Some of the political stuff feels too heavy-handed.
And Jennifer Jason Leigh playing a Jessica Walter-type character makes me feel old.
It concluded last night in excellent form. Maybe just a notch below Seasons 1 and 2 for me, but super enjoyable. Agree about the heavy-handed sheriff politics. What I loved most of all, besides the awesome Juno Temple, were all the little callbacks to three original film. The failson managing a car dealership. Their kid named Sam. The controlling in-law. The Nordic hit man of few words. Totally nailed the bleak Midwestern winter vibe.
I’m four time zones from Shreveport, will be on the beach when the game starts but will watch later via the DVR.
It’s a great beach weather week (Hapuna, Mauna Kea etc.) except somebody turned the wind machine on full blast.
I’ve watched a few March NCAA hoops games from beaches in Maui using free hotel wifi. The part of Hapuna nearest the Mauna Kea resort might make that possible.
My rule is, no television on the beach. I do listen to radio, which is fine. I’ve done that for NFL playoffs and even the Super Bowl over here. NFL games tomorrow start at 8:00, 11:05/11:25 and 3:20.
That could be a test of the new phone I had to take time to run down to Kailua Kona (~30 miles each way) the other day to buy because my old one appeared to be beyond any resuscitation, which was tried extensively with lots of Youtube video viewing etc. We’re too damned reliant on those things, and it happened quickly. I don’t think I even had a smart phone until about 2015. Better to have it suddenly croak on this trip than on the one next month, because the PGA Tour tickets are on there and they are all digital.
Testing the new phone by trying to listen to an NFL game, there’s something wrong because this PxP has the Buffalo Bills basically obliterating the Dallas Cowboys and that has to be fake. Must be connecting to some phony network. I guess I’ll have to take this phone back to the store before I leave.
Josh Allen couldn’t even throw for 100 yards, and they’ve pulled him for Kyle Allen now.
It sounded like a bit of a reversion to the Ground Chuck era. I was listening to the Bills’ local broadcast and the PxP (apparently subbing for their longtime voice who is recovering from a stroke), who was on the hyper side, used as one of his TD calls AND THE COOK IS IN THE KITCHEN!!!
Thank your boys for us. That was delightful.
The A’s signing Trevor Gott is up there with the Raiders getting Jakobi Meyers this year.
David Fletcher got released by the braves.
Has to be a tough call for the agent to make. “Trevor, I’ve put a lot of effort into selling teams on you, but if Oakland doesn’t work for you I’m afraid we’re looking at the KBO.”
I like his burgers. I’ll probably never watch an inning of him playing.
The 5Aces had an easy win over New Mexico State.
The Eds got behind early but ran Boise State off the field in the second half.
Going for the FK sweep, the Soakers…got off to a strong start, but after the first quarter thought, “Shreveport? Why the FK are we in Shreveport?” and wasted the remainder of Soaker’s Saturday evening. You can understand Texas Tech being fired up about the game because once you’ve seen the bright lights of Shreveport, how can you go back to Lubbock?
After the first seven minutes Tech put everything on D into stopping Jaden Ott and dared QB Mendoza to beat them, and he could not. Man could he not. That got ugly.
So far you’d have to put the Aces atop the FK bowl championship series. We’ll see how the Upgrades acquit themselves next week Weds.
Syracuse trails South Florida 45-0 in the fourth quarter of the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl, so at least Cal’s awfulness in Shreveport wasn’t the most wretched performance of this year’s Capital One Bowl Mania.
Soccer-knowers: I need to pick a Premier League team to root for. My criteria are a team good enough that relegation is unlikely for at least a few years, and one who’s fans aren’t known for racism or smug entitlement. So not the EPL version of the Red Sox. Recommendations?
My Friend’s Kid is a goalie for West Ham Women on loan to a sweedish team this season. She was at Benfica last year. I am thinking of supporting them, but need to look into it more.

Personal connection is good. I like that they’re called the Hammers and their song is “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles.” Some fan thuggery in the past. Five minute internet vibe take seems mostly positive. Burgundy blue and yellow colors a bit of an odd combo. A solid maybe.
The Olympic stadium deal was very sleazy by UK standards (so run of the mill by US)
I don’t know about racism, but if you don’t like smug entitlement I’d say no Liverpool or Man United at least. Stay away from the big London clubs (Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham) too probably.
Brighton & Hove Albion would be a good choice. Great name, great mascot (seagulls), blue and white are good colors, and they play a fun style right now and punch way above their weight. Relegation never really off the table for a club that size, but they should be safe for the next few years.
Ooh, a contender, if I can figure out wtf “Hove” is. Assuming this random reddit comment is 100% reliable it’s a more liberal fanbase than many, also I can identify with this hopeful arc: “we had shit owners who sold our stadium and turned it into a shopping centre. We were broke, homeless and circling the drain of the football pyramid. Dick knight and subsequently Tony bloom bought the club and injected money.“
I think Brighton is a historic gay beach destination, which gives it a certain countercultural cachet. Your bitter rivals will be Crystal Palace, as I understand it, which honestly sounds like a reasonably cool club too.
OK it’s decided, and conveniently the big rivalry game is tomorrow! Come on Albion, stomp those Stripey Nigels right out of Selhurst!
Got a second half equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw.
a point in the FSU era!
Things are looking up in the south!
Your Gulls are rampant today, FSU!
Massive! Suck it, Spurs!
the FSU bump is real
Crushed Sheffield United in the FA cup today 5-2, with a hat trick from Joao Pedro. Still undefeated in the FSU era, 3 wins 3 draws.
2 down within 4 minutes isn’t promising for maintaining the FSU streak
need three in 45
4 in 30
Alas.
Things looking better today, and against Palace to boot.
Well done lads!
Getting up at 445 to see if your boys can be king makers?
655. Yes.
oh, that is way easier.
I was confused. I thought it was brighton at city. it’s everton at city. that is 430
You guys are at spurs
No Joao Pedro today, he scored twice when we beat Spurs last time, tough to replace.
Gotta admit, Udogie is the best name in sports
Argh, crushing late defeat. Tottenham was very beatable, many mistakes, many chances for the Gulls. Alas.
tough beat
The father of one of my Bailiffs is from Brighton and is a supporter. He explained that Brighton is a beach town and Hove is the upper scale enclave just to the north. Kinda like Oakland and Piedmont.
But that is just his interpretation.
Manchester City would be the glory-hunter choice these days .. United would be glutton for punishment territory.
Newcastle is another sports-washing, FFP-violating, no-no.
Albion is a very solid choice. Brighton (where I did my PhD) is indeed a very gay town, and also elected the first Green MP in Britain.
The main thing to know about Hove is that it’s always referred to as “Hove, actually”.
Happy Solstice FKers, one and all!
I don’t hold out any hope that the Colorado Supreme Court decision will actually stand, but the opinion is so good and every argument I read against it is so bad.
No, the Supreme Court is quite comfortable making decisions to abet the slide into authoritarianism. Come January 2025 Bush v Gore will seem like a minor fraternal spat by comparison.
That’s a shame, but I’m not surprised. The DC Circuit is hearing argument on the issue in a couple of weeks. Easy call for SCOTUS not to ruin its holidays and give itself the benefit of another court’s thinking on it. Sure would have been nice if they had slapped Trump’s crappy argument down right now and be done with it though.
One possible scenario here is that the DC Circuit fairly quickly affirms the district court that there is no immunity for what Trump is charged with, and the Supreme Court fairly quickly denies cert because Roberts, Kavanaugh, and Barrett don’t want to touch that shit if they can avoid it.
Well, not sure a month was “fairly quickly,” but now it’s time for the Supreme Court to hopefully take a pass on this frivolous bullshit. Unfortunately, only four votes are needed to take the appeal, so…hopefully Beer Fan Brett isn’t in the mood to do Don a solid.
Oh hmm, maybe Trump needs not only a cert grant but also a stay from the Supreme Court, given the way the circuit court did this thing. That would require five votes for him, not four.
I irrationally always think Gorsuch will not kowtow to the right because I used to work with his cousin who is pretty cool
My college girlfriend clerked with him, back when he was on the Tenth Circuit. She’s not someone that I’m in touch with anymore but I have wondered what was up with that?
There are some very conservative circuit judges who don’t hire only federalist society weirdos as clerks. She probably sent out applications to 100 judges and he was the first to make her an offer.
The guy arguing Colorado’s position to SCOTUS, to keep Trump off ballot, clerked for both Kagan and Gorsuch
She is also from Denver / lives there now, so I would guess that the location was a plus.
Does it matter? It would only matter if deep purple states adopt it. And I can’t see that happening.
It might cost lauren Bobart her seat, but that is about it, yeah?
That was my take as well. He’ll get thrown off the ballot in states he won’t win anyway, while also feeding his “they’re afraid of me so they’re trying to steal the election” grievance narrative. And on the off chance some Pennsylvania or Michigan judge does try to apply it there, the Supreme Court will step in in a second.
Theoretically, if he is thrown off the primary ballot in enough states (even blue ones) he could lose the nomination. But again, higher courts will block that if it ever gets real.
(Side note: same thing with that National Popular Vote plan that people have been pushing for 20+ years now. Wake me up when Texas signs on.)
Logically, if the SCOTUS affirmed on the merits, it should mean he’s constitutionally ineligible to serve as president again, and challenges would be brought in federal court in every meaningful state to remove him, and those courts would theoretically have to follow the supreme court precedent. That’s total fantasy land stuff, of course, but whatever.
IMO the Colorado opinion itself matters as a historical document, and I’m curious on an intellectual level to find out exactly how Roberts and Kavanaugh write the opinion for Trump without totally embarrassing themselves with their hackery.
Merry FKing Christmas FKers, and LOL @Chiefs.
Just watched that game, that was quite an awful performance; credit to Antonio’s defense though. This might be the year Buffalo knocks off Mahomes (and loses to Tua instead?).
And with the night game, kind of a bad day for anybody wearing red. I hope Santa made it home safely.
Yep, big oof game.
But, sometimes every one of your tipped balls finds a defender’s hands, while every one of theirs finds grass.
4-1 in bird hunting season is a great outcome. Just need Trent to be ok.
The big boy bowl matchups start today with #7 Ohio State vs #9 Missou, and also the doctorKs are in action. Tomorrow is the battle of the disappointeds, #6 Georgia vs #5 Florida State, and also 10 v 11 Penn St Ole Miss. And Monday has the semifinals. Good games! Only weekend of the year college football meaningfully competes with the NFL for my eyeball time. Much to the dismay of Nurse Upgrade, mostly stuck at home recuperating from successful knee surgery.
One of the allegedly premier New Years Day games is Oregon vs. Jerry Falwell U. The Falwells went undefeated against teams that gave them a strength-of-schedule that ranked #133 strongest out of 133 FBS teams, but got the invite to the game by being the highest-ranked team from the lesser “Group of Five” conferences. I fervently hope the Ducks, in their Pac 12 finale, take the game seriously and beat the Falwells 69-0.
Liberty is trying to be a prominent sports school, two NCAA hoops tourney invites in recent years and now a New Year’s Day bowl. Sports for the glory of God and to make people forget Mr and Mrs Jerry Jr. and their pool boy.
Quite a performance there by Florida State, one of the marquee teams in Cal’s future conference.
Game was so bad I switched to Toledo vs Wyoming in the Arizona Bowl, sponsored by Barstool Sports, a horrifying cringely hours-long real life Idiocracy. We’re so doomed.
After reading the ratto column at defector, my question is, will college football survive the collapse of the lessor bowls? I mean, if a team, er, school, doesn’t make the marquee playoffs, then what is the point of playing if you are a draftable player?
Are people going to tune in with the same numbers to see the second string of random college that they didn’t attend play a basically travel ball quality of game?
College football plays exhibition games after the regular season. Your question isn’t much different than asking “will Major League Baseball survive the collapse of the Cactus League?” Many of the lesser bowl games are played before mostly empty stadiums, as alumni like me who thoroughly enjoy the regular season have only casual interest in any non-playoff bowl games for the reason you mention, that the team playing in the bowl game often is nothing like the one that played the regular season. ESPN does get ratings that apparently are reliably good enough that the lesser bowls are still profitable as TV programming, though, which is the only reason most of those games exist.
Next year the playoff field expands from 4 teams to 12 teams. The lower end of the 12 likely aren’t really in the championship conversation, similar to the first round of the NFL playoffs, but at least the games are meaningful and embarrassments like yesterday’s unmotivated performance by Florida State should not happen.
Ah. that makes sense.
I have traditionally rooted against Alabama in all things, and for Michigan in most things, but Harbaugh has becomes such a cartoon villain that…nah, still rooting for Michigan.
Will Harbaugh make time during the Championship Week preparation to meet with Mark Davis, or does that wait until next Tuesday?
It won’t be hard to have a rooting interest in the national championship game.
The Pac-12’s final New Years Day was pretty glorious, as first Oregon gave Falwell U. a nice crushing, and then most satisfyingly Washington hung on to knock Texas out of it.
Two great games today. Go Huskies!
Frankie Montas, who threw 41 innings as a Yankee, gets $16M for one season with Cincinnati.
In exchange for him and Lou, who missed all of 2023 with TJ surgery and is now a free agent, the A’s got their current top three starting pitchers.
in david we trust
The Reds are a fun, competitive team that badly needs starting pitching, so I am hoping for a return of 2021 Frankie.
Local CBS station KPIX gets to go up against the Niners on Fox in the early time slot. They opted for Miami vs Baltimore, two good teams playing for playoff seeds, over the Raiders-Colts game, mediocre teams with do-or-die fringy playoff hopes. This says to me that KPIX thinks there’s no local ratings value to the Raiders any more. That’s probably true, since the die hard Raiders fans already subscribed to Sunday Ticket to avoid this being a problem.
The broadcast map was interesting, with Sacramento/inland norcal and a coastal area from Santa Cruz south opting for the Raiders. Miami/Baltimore is by far the best game on the schedule (and of more personal interest to me).
Next week’s schedule doesn’t come out until later tonight, but a glance at the list of games makes me give Buffalo @ Miami approximately a 100% chance of being the Sunday night game.
With a win, Buffalo is 11-6 and wins tiebreakers over Miami for the division and KC for the #2 seed. With a loss, they could miss the playoffs entirely if a couple of other games also go wrong. Miami could be either #2 or #6, so it is not quite as dire for them, but still significant.
Houston/Indy is two 8-7 teams, with the winner probably going to the Buffalo/Miami winner for the first round of the playoffs. Atlanta/NO is another one with similar 7th seed stakes.
Those are the only ones I see with both teams playing for anything.
NFL set itself up with seven TV slots in the final weekend: two Saturday for ABC/ESPN, Sunday doubleheaders for both Fox and CBS, and the NBC nightcap. To be filled with those three games where both teams care, plus assorted who will fuck up games (Packers choking at home to Bears and Tampa losing at Carolina fit).
I can promise you’ve seen the last of the Raiders this season in the Bay Area, because both they and the 49ers have late games on Fox.
A clash of the winners and runners-up in the FSU supporter stakes … a win for the Seagulls and they’d leapfrog the Hammers (and ManUre) into 6th place.
I could only watch second half, Brighton had much the better of the chances but couldn’t convert. I guess you don’t competing about getting a point on the road but that could have been a win.
I got my sample ballot for the presidential primary (Feb. 6). In addition to Joseph R. Biden, Jr., there are 12 more Democrats, one of whom is Superpayaseria Crystalroc, plus (it being Nevada) “None of these Candidates”.
They just send one sample ballot to everyone, and on the Republican side Nikki R. Haley is the only significant one on the ballot who’s still in the race (Mike Pence, Tim Scott and some random others are also on there). The Nevada GOP is separately holding caucuses and has said they will ignore the primary results and choose Nevada’s delegates to their convention at the caucuses, because the caucus results can be trusted while the results of an election run by the Secretary of State on Dominion voting machines can be tampered with and will generate an undesired result. By filing for the primary Haley is not allowed to put her name forth in the GOP caucus, per rules set by the Nevada GOP, so that’s among Trump, DeSantis, Christie and Vivek.
The primary for all other 2024 races is in June. This early presidential primary will be useful for Democrats, at least, in 2028, but it’s just a waste of money this time.
Superpayaseria Crystalroc received 119 votes statewide out of
98,358110,151 cast in the Democratic primary. Mark R. Prascak got 26 votes statewide; you’d think someone on the ballot would get more than that just by accident. (Edit: 98,358 was Biden’s total, which was 89.29% of 110,151.)It’s mildly encouraging that 25,551 registered Republicans bothered to vote for somebody other than Trump stand-in “None of these Candidates”, which won with 43,893 votes or 63.21%.
Per an email from the Oakland 68s, since there’s also a concert at the arena on 3/28 the A’s get a reduced share of the parking revenue. So anyone who wants to tailgate for Opening Day but also observe the boycott can pay to park and not give the A’s as much revenue as usual parking.
“Reduced share”…but isn’t parking sometimes higher for the dual event nights, at least after a certain cutoff time? Just saying, 75% of $40 = 100% of $30.
I was wondering if they might require a ticket purchase for a parking purchase for that night, but that would not be practical with the concert also happening. It’s “The Love Hard Tour: Keyshia Cole, Trey Songz, & more”, 8 p.m. show time with the A’s having 7:07 listed for first pitch.
I’ve seen the parking price change for dual event nights with a major headliner, as you say after a certain cutoff time (which is well past the time I’d show up). If you’re not on their mailing list here’s what the 68’s wrote:
That made me double-check whether Oracle is still putting its name on the arena; answer is No.
Per that link there are only 13 events booked in the arena from now through May, granted Disney on Ice is multiple shows. Pretty much what I thought, that the Warriors arena would get the headliners, the Sharks arena gets its share and Oakland’s arena feeds on the table scraps that probably used to go to the Cow Palace. I can’t imagine the maintenance cost on that place is justified by the revenue. Seems to me whatever plan for redevelopment of the site is chosen should encompass the entire property without any part of either stadium or arena remaining.
As for being on anybody’s mailing list, no; with six weeks or so before pitchers and catchers report I’m pretty certain that my engagement with baseball in general and the A’s in particular will be very limited this year.
So if Patrick Mahomes is going to knock the Bills out of it again he’ll have to do it in front of the full Bills Mafia in Orchard Park.
I think Miami has a good chance at winning that game in KC next week.
I don’t really see it. Some chance, sure (any given Sunday, etc.). But
– Miami has a ton of injuries (even more than most teams at this time of year) on both sides of the ball, especially defense. On the offensive side they might get Waddle back, but they had even more defenders injured on Sunday.
– Even before the injuries, the knock on Miami was that they hadn’t beaten anyone good. The only team they beat with a winning record was Dallas, who themselves were criticized for the same thing.
– KC’s defense is good (2nd in yards, 2nd in points). Their offense was weirdly mediocre (9th in yards, 15th in points), and yeah they lost to the Raiders a couple weeks ago. But it seems like a mistake to underestimate Reid/Mahomes/Kelce.
It looks like an easy win for KC to me.
Also, it’s supposed to be single-digit temperatures in KC.
Perhaps wishcasting…I sure would love to see those Tomahawk Chopping asshole fans to be shut up. But KC has just not looked great to me. Lost three of last six, and yeah anyone who loses to Raiders is highly suspect. One of my sports betting adages is to fade the inconsistent team in the playoffs, KC fits, I’ll take the Fins.
That was the game I felt the most sure of this weekend (more than Buffalo) and it played out as expected.
Mostly I picked the better QB this weekend (Stroud > Flacco, Mahomes >> Tua, Prescott > Love, Stafford > Goff, Allen > Rudolph) though I do think the Bucs can beat a flailing Eagles team.
In retrospect my picks yesterday were stupid. How about that! Today I have Dallas -7 and Detroit -3, tomorrow I have Pitt +9.5 and Tampa +3. An 0-6 weekend is well within reach.
Ooh, so close, but you managed to bet against the Iggles.
My picks were 4-2 (straight up, not against the spread), which is not bad considering favorites were only 3-3.
A tale of two franchises: records in postseason games since their last championship.
Oakland A’s since 1989 World Series: 24-37 (.393)
Dallas Cowboys since January 1996 Super Bowl: 5-13 (.278)
Isn’t the A’s equivalent 3-13?
We’re back, baby! Thanks nm.
I clicked my link this morning with a desperate hope. Seeing this green and gold made the room a bit dusty. Happy Friday y’all.
Long live kraut, be it dead or alive
She has a few lucid moments, but when we go to visit she recognizes us less and less with each passing day. I’m afraid the old gal’s remaining time with us is very short.
I don’t know if she has a resuscitate order or not at this point…
My opinion only, not speaking for anybody else:
If this is the only thing you use the hosting account for, I would let it run up to the point you have paid for already, but wouldn’t renew the hosting account. All I’d ask is that you state what the expiration date is. I’m fine with letting it go; 15 years or so is a good run.
It’s so inexpensive I don’t mind doing it. But if it ran its course I’m glad to be told.
I still get happiness from FK.
Same. Even if I dont comment as often I read every damn word and would miss it if it wasnt there. (Though I would also understand)
I have seen slacks and discord groups. They are not as fun and don’t have people I care for, as I do for the people here.
It definitely wouldn’t be the same, but I’d definitely hang out with this crowd in a discord server as a backup plan.
I’d do an email thread. I’d take a missive delivered by the pony express. The family I choose.
The people have spoken.
That said, I’m always open for new hosting suggestions, or someone who wants to get involved on the admin side (and who won’t deactivate the automatic backups I established after, well, you know).
Anyone else think Sean Newcomb slots nicely into the 8th inning?
The world we live in…FK slips in and out of consciousness.
Meanwhile it’s too snowy to play FOOTBALL…in Buffalo??? Clearly that NE toughness has been lost. And I don’t ever want to hear baseball mocked for rai out again.
Happily my next spectator sports thing is not in Buffalo, nor KC, nor at Lake Tahoe, but “The American Express”, the PGA Tour’s visit to La Quinta next weekend.
I’m slowly migrating toward Full Snowbird. Same as last year, I’m going straight from the golf to Waikiki for a week. The issue with it is on the Palm Springs-SFO-Honolulu routing, the SFO-Honolulu leg is scheduled on an Alaska 737 MAX 9. If you get sucked out at 37,000 feet, does your body hold together in one piece for 7 miles of plunge to the ocean, or does it fall apart on the way down so you’re already shark chum when you hit?
It looks like for that flight they have swapped in a different airplane for the 737 MAX 9. I had bought a ticket on Southwest as a backup because all 737 MAX 9 flights have been cancelled, but the Alaska schedule is preferable so assuming the Alaska flight still looks like a go by tomorrow night I’ll cancel the Southwest one.
Take two feel of snow, add 24 hours and holiday, create peak Bills fan conditions.
Meanwhile in KC they’ll reprise the Ice Bowl and Peacock gets my $6.
And you’ll see a ton of promos for the other programming on Peacock. The whole idea is that there will be a lot of consumers like you who pay the $6 specifically as Pay-Per-View for that game, and if they can convince ##% of those to keep paying that monthly fee rather than cancelling immediately it’s a great success.
I’ve been a radio guy for so long, I already pay for NFL games on SiriusXM, so while I think watching the game in the icebox conditions would be fun, one of the available radio broadcasts is plenty good for me.
Or of course hope that, even if they dont convince you, that you will forget for a few months and its the same thing. Signed a guy who has kept Peacock for a year in this basic way.
Trying to extract value from my $6 before I pull the plug I binge watched Peacock’s show Mrs. Davis, wherein a traumatized child of magicians becomes a nun in love with Jesus and confronts the titular all-powerful AI which rules the world. Genuinely original, and funny. Chef recommends.
If you’re looking for stuff to watch on Peacock, I enjoyed “Vigil.” Murder mystery set on a British nuclear submarine.
Started! Thanks, around this house we’re suckers for a good murder mystery and British accents.
Oooh. Thanks for the suggestions. I liked Rutherford Falls.
We liked “Rutherford Falls” as well, and also “Girls5Eva.”
Also a (Finnish fantasy action horror comedy xmas) movie called “Rare Exports.”
I thought “Vigil” was OK but IIRC about halfway through it became less mystery and more action, which doesn’t interest me as much.
I will have to file the “Mrs. Davis” recommendation away for some future time, as I had already canceled the most recent 1-month subscription.
Did they offer you any incentive to retain? I was hoping for something like a free month once I threatened to quit, that’s fairly common with other platforms.
No. I was only paying half-price anyway ($3) because we still get comcast cable, but I am trying to be disciplined about turning off subscriptions we aren’t currently using, even at piddling prices.
I discontinued my Peacock subscription a couple months ago and they recently sent me a promo offer for six months at $1.99/month. I haven’t reactivated yet but the offer expires in a few weeks so I might decide to do it.
Whoa Vigil is a who’s who! Suranne Jones! Rose Leslie! Shaun Evans! Gary Lewis! Martin Compston!
Who?
You’re not watching enough britbox. The scream I scrumed when Suranne Jones hit the screen!!
Suranne Jones is so good. Gentleman Jack!
Rose Leslie is great too.
I had to look most of them up, but do watch enough Britbox/Acorn/PBS to have seen:
Suranne Jones – Scott & Bailey
Shaun Evans – Endeavour
Gary Lewis – The Bay, Retribution, The Level (watching now)
Martin Compston – Line of Duty
I will always think of Gary Lewis as the dad from Billy Elliot! Super weird seeing Shaun Evans in a contemporary setting.
I love watching any Britbox show and then spending most of the episode trying to figure out where I’ve seen each person before.
Vigil season 2 now out on Peacock. Not as good as the first, but more Rose Leslie. Very excited that Surrane Jones is in an upcoming Masterpiece Theater.
Peacock currently has an offer of $19.99 for a full year. They just have a couple NFL games, but this year they also have some Big Ten college football, and I still feel like I’ll be more interested in USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington than in our new ACC rivals such as North Carolina and Syracuse. Plus some golf. I decided to give it a try mainly for those things and see if I can milk $19.99 worth out of it.
If you would use it for the Olympics, Premier League, the scripted shows, etc. too that seems like a good deal.
After I canceled last time they sent me a $2/month for 6 months deal, which I took with an eye toward the Olympics.
Day 1 on surfing from Teahupo’o, Tahiti (pronounced sort of like “Chia-hoe-poe-oh”) and I feel like I’ve gotten my $12 worth. This wave has an incredible barrel.
Sunday, Jan 14, the lights flicker, we have comments.
Is Zach Gelof a fluke?
I say no fluke. Love the swing, seems repeatable. I’m less bullish on Lawrence Butler and Esteury Ruiz.
Unabashedly linking to mlb trade rumors not the sources, but essentially Kaval’s merry men are still waiting for the giants to approve the use of PacBell, if not, sutter health, nee raley field, which is controlled by, checks notes, the giant’s AAA affiliate rivercats.
Also it seems the TV deal requires a stay in the “bay area” which I guess doesn’t apply to sacramento even though you can get there by boat, famously.
Kaval seems to be going through a tunnel every time Oakland says they will extend the lease if they leave the name.
I mean-do they really think they have any value left in the name? Or more importantly, that there would still be value in the name after another 4 years, 3 of which they would be dong a Cleveland Spiders routine?
Athletics is still pretty valuable, it’s one of the oldest franchises, third most World Series trophies, and the best color scheme. As much as I’d like to see Fisher/Kaval stripped of that legacy there’s no way MLB lets that happen.
