my first thought is this is kind of early for a game thread. but then i remembered there are still plenty of concessions we can make to our east coast overlords, such as playing games on their time zone so that their fans don’t have to wait all afternoon to find out how their team won and heading out to the duane-reade. brilliantly put point ed.
don’t you find that being on the east coast is terrible for following baseball? Even a day game on the east coast doesn’t start till the day is half over.I love 930 or 1000 games, you get none of those there
I was just pouring myself a cup of coffee and thinking this exact thought, about how 10:00 weekend start times often fit so perfectly into my life.
O-M-G. how did you survive in Hawaii?? that would be awesome. 8 AM games!!
I’d bring the radio to the beach and listen to Islander games often, but that was still the same 3 hour split, 1000am and 100pm starts. At the time, 75-80, the A’s had a part-time radio flagship in HI which would run random occasional games, but usually tape-delayed.
The real Win in timing in HI is NFL games, with 700 and 1000am starts, done by 100pm with the whole afternoon still left.
The problem with early (even 10 AM) NFL games is that if I go to a sports bar that early and have a couple beers, the whole day is pretty much shot.
I thought you started that sentence indicating that there was a problem?
yeah, delete the first two words and put an S at the end of shot.
I dunno… I have a couple of beers early and I have to take a nap. Otherwise my energies are drained and I might as well be a zombie or a shiftworker.
Earlier time zone + DVR technology = definitionally superior
DirectTV exclusivity = inferior
Plus I still like to watch sports in real time.
that is cool
pluses and minuses. while morning baseball didn’t exist, i used to watch games at a bar and would hope for drawn-out away games. but back then i used to be able to stand 2nd-hand smoke and drunk strangers.
Excellent, Bob’s using the good lineup today.
There’s a good lineup?
Reddick could be in it.
That doesn’t seem to address the Monday starter issue, as Carnigan is a reliever from my quick check.
Blackly followed by a cast of several?
I think that’s the plan, although per one of Slusser’s tweets yesterday it was apparently news to Blackley, which doesn’t really inspire a lot of confidence.
last few ¶s.
I’m OK with this plan I guess. I’d be happier with the random guy plucked from AA for a sudden thrill-of-his-life MLB start, with a return to Midland after regardless of the outcome. Plus, we could DFA Godfrey at the same time, added bonus.
I am not sure that is the concern
It’s still attached to his hand and he seems to think he can pitch?
A.J. Cole, the young prospect acquired from Nationals in the Gio trade, has rather alarming stats if baseball-reference.com is to be believed.
He is 0-7 in 8 appearances, having given up 60 hits and 7 home runs in 38 innings. His WHIP in Stockton is 1.84. He’s only 20.
Brad Peacock, another pitcher acquired in Gio deal, is struggling in Sacramento, although the River Cats are so good he still has five wins.
Milone has been the only pitcher from the Gio trade who’s done anything this year. And Derek Norris, the power-hitting catcher, is off to a good start.
Cole was demoted to Burlington, and has already had one bad start there as well.
Peacock’s ERA is kind of ugly, but his peripherals are decent.
I saw the Burlington start, didn’t realize he had been demoted. That start was ugly, too.
Peacock’s peripherals are decent. But if he was doing all that well, Blackley wouldn’t be starting for the A’s on Monday.
In somewhat related yet unrelated, did Ynoa ever actually take part in extended Spring training given the “minor shoulder strain” sustained a couple weeks ago? I cannot seem to find anything, which leads me to conclude that he did not.
help. i’m at my neighbors’. they have a televisual device. the box on top says “comcast.” i am holding a re-moot controlerator. what number to i dial it to make the A’s be here?
i mean at 1 when the game starts of course.
I believe it’s 41. Not sure of the HD channel.
Varies by city. Here it’s 41.
can you see the teevee from the rabbit cage?
i might hug the bunny on the couch but i’m not sitting behind bars with it.
Heh.
You are on a roll today.
Shouldn’t there be a menu or guide button or something?
ionno? should there? i’m truly (and happily) lost with these remotes and TV systems from the past 10 years or so.
Well that would explain it.
yeah, it’s like a fun preview of how i’ll be at 70yrs old with EVERY technical device.
By the time you’re 70, the digital divide will be between device users and people with implants.
If the cable box is stereo component-sized, and the remote has a million buttons then it will have an on-screen program guide, and it’s also worth trying 721 to see if they have HD.
If the box is tiny with a single green light, and the remote is a little bare-bones one, it’s just a d-to-a converter box.
721 in glorious HD.
Fun note from the Chron today:
That sounds completely apropos.
and suddenly we have a GM candidate.
i haz supersad. quick bahn mi run turned into i can’t believe my cousin rode this bike with the brakes this lose good thing i happen to have an allen in this bag / no wonder my cousin rode this bike with the brakes this lose the brake pads are down to the metal [breathe] cash only / forgot my cash fiasco, and when i finally got back i find out the stupid neighbor TV is set to record a stupid golf thing so i can’t change the channel.
:((((
I’d trade being able to watch the game for a banh mi right about now.
[holds out stubby, chewed butt end of flaky french bread containing pork chop extra jalapeños with an inviting motion…]
do you go to the one on international by the fruitvale village?
no, where exactly is that one? this was from cam huong downtown.
Its like a block off north of the fruitvale villiage on international.
next time i’m over there i’m going to instigate an international incident (in my stomach) between a torta loca and a banh mi.
sounds like what an international man of mystery would do.
Your friends’ tech sounds primitive. I thought all those DVR units were multi-records these days.
it says it’s recording 2 things and it gives me options. 1) back out and let record. 2) switch to see the other item being recorded (a talk show!) 3) stop recording something and switch to see the A’s. i’m not comfortable with #3.
4) get different friends
landlord-neighbors.
Landlord actually necessitates you participating in Skinner box fantasy rabbit play.
Sorry.
i must have pressed the wrong button. did not get my reward.
Absolute miracle they didn’t score in that inning.
milonracle.
Good pitching and luck and Swisher being too quick for his own good…
I’m sure it’s a touching story, but I think I am going to pass on a movie about lacrosse.
milone’s not fooling anybody today, is he?
No.
I’m trying to remember why I predicted that the A’s would win this game. I got nothing.
the ghost of “due.”
i’d been waiting to watch the game on espn3 but they don’t got it after all (surprising)… 5?? nice going USMNT.
this was solid
http://imgon.net/di-QLL5.gif
Thanks, and go As.
The Klinsmann reaction is priceless.
good shot. donovan’s (i think it’s him) lob kinda takes a funny bounce and that could have made the shot go anywhere, but he handled it nicely.
It was on NBC Sports Network, so no streaming action. Wednesday’s game against the Seleçao will be on ESPN though.
BOOBIES
Also, I H8 NY
I think I just saw stm72 in one of the pre-inning crowd shots on CSN.
replay: so is that yes network person trying to aggrandize the shot by calling where it lands a superstructure rather than just structure?
He’s doing it wrong. The superstructure in the outfield would be Mt Davis, starting with the luxury box level below the value deck. Jones’ shot was a blast, but not that long.
Arguably anything above the supports could be called the superstructure, but really, it’s just a structure.
he says super like he’s calling WWE.
Arguably that’s just fucking stupid.
thlide theth, thlide!
Slide you idiot…
That was horrible. And now Donaldson follows with a single. So instead of runners at first and third with one out, there’s just a guy on first with two outs.
We’re not legging out the groundballs any more either, I think the malAise has set in.
I think you mean malA’se.
fixed!
Wow, this team really sucks, doesn’t it.
Could have had a runner on third…
“without the opportunity to have confidence.”
The Vince Cotroneo Story
Sad but true
This team is a pile of sthteaming shith.
Yeah. The laws of reality as we know them would have to be completely warped to turn this team into a good club. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but still…
Maybe that will wake up the hitting section of Kurk’s mind.
Or put him on the DL so we can get Norris.
Cue Chuck Norris ref’s.
Suckzuki, perhaps it’s finally time to TAKE SOME TIME OFF. You ain’t helping.
Add Fosse to the list of idiots who believe balls pick up speed after being foul-tipped.
When the hitter makes contact while swinging backwards it does!
Weird that hit made no sound whatsoever…
The shift doesn’t seem to work against the Yankees.
Everything
The shiftdoesn’t seem to work against the YankeesTypically, you have to pitch in such a manner to make him hit into the shift. Swisher hit a pitch off the outside corner.
Also, the Yankees have been too comfortable at the plate. Our pitchers seem to be avoiding throwing inside (although Milone has been much better than the other guys).
Why are they doing the wave while we’re pitching? #giantsfan?
Name that pitcher:
4-0, 24.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 7 H, 1 R (0 ER), 7 BB, 43 K
Please tell me he’s in the Oakland organization somewhere.
Also, HIIIIIIIIIII.
Major leaguer (I saw this the same place the llama did).
However, Sean Doolittle:
21.1 IP, 0.84 ERA, 7 H, 4 R (2 ER), 6 BB, 40 K
has come pretty close to that, split between 2 levels of the minors.
Let’s get his ass up to Sacramento then. Sounds like one of those 4-levels-in-a-year guys.
He almost was in the Oakland organization a few years ago.
Ryan Cook?
Thanks, and go As.
No, but Cook might give Ziegler a run for his money.
it’d be a different record.
Forgot that he pitched in the majors last year.
that was my guess but i didn’t know how he got 4 W’s.
Hello. Thank you for being you. :)
If you were someone else, all your clothes would be way too small.
Spoiler:
Aroldis Chapman
Boy am I glad I didn’t have to watch most of this series.
Oh Ray, please shut up.
Friends, acquaintances, deities, and hangers-on…
I would really like for our friends in green and gold on the field to have a nice evening in Minneapolis doing whatever the FK horny young men do on a Sunday in Minneapolis, rather than stewing in the broth of a five game losing streak on a plane to bumfk with hope sinking further down the toilet with each breath.
If anyone here has any spare mojo, throw it in the soup and let’s see if it’ll be enough.
oh yeah… not you, DFA. However, if the time comes to throw in the towel, we’ll see about getting draft greedy and maybe mojoing up a 20 game losing streak.
then again, that prolly wouldn’t work either.
C.J. Wilson out w/ an injured hand.
(pump-sucking-air sound coming from internal sympathy well)
Wow. A runner on base in front of Reddick.
Or:
Wow. A runner on base.
#suzukied
Uh – who was Jeter thinking he would fool with the fake tag?
jeeets doesn’t have to fool, the umpire bends to his will
Hope rhymes with dope.
I didn’t realize that Don Baylor had ever stolen a lot of bases.
Baylor used to go very hard into second base. Infielders were afraid of getting racked up.
And then RG3 came along and Baylor was legit for a year

Wow, we’re bad.
I can’t imagine any other team tolerating Donaldson on the major league roster let alone hitting 6th.
Hopefully, this is his last game on the 25-man roster.
That’s a pretty good bet. Inge is coming back, and they need to keep Rosales as the utility guy because he can play shortstop and second.
Wrong!
Going to the Rivercats game tomorrow!
Trevor Bauer vs Manny and Cespedes, SO EXCITED!
Looks to be in the 80’s, anyone have any tips on Raley field, shady seats?
I am considering going to that game as well…
This will be my first time to Raley or a AAA game for that matter, pretty excited actually.
It is fun, but I have to say that there is something odd about the crowd, I have said this for a long time, but the crowd doesnt react like you think they should, I can quite put my finger on it…It was funny because on the way back last night, Englishmajor mentioned the same thing to me in the car, and I told her that I had thought the same thing for a few years..
They’re the STEPFORD CROWD!
Huh interesting, maybe the crowd tries not to get too attached to the players, I’d imagine it could be tough to watch regularly, odds are anyone doing well ends up being promoted.
Then again the Rivercats may be closer to a AAAA team judging by how successful they are.
I wish I could figure out what exactly it is hat seems just a bit off at the Rivercats games…Last night I described it like this, I often say that Giants fans overreact to every play, they stand up and cheer for popups to second base as if the batter has hit a homerun when it is obviously a pop up, they stand up and scream as if the batter has hit a game winning walk off grand slam when in actuality it is a single with 2 outs in the inning, just lots of overreactions, I would summarize the Rivercats crowds as kind of under-reacting to plays that happen, if this makes any sense at all…
Like Yankees fans… They just expect their club to win everyday
Unlike Yankees fans… they don’t give that much of a shit if their club doesn’t win everyday
Yes, exactly…
Probably the reaction is “I don’t know who the fuck these guys are or who they’re playing. I’m just watching baseball.” So they have zero rooting interest other than something interesting happening.
Except that most of them aren’t watching the game very closely.
Hence a general lack of response to the latter when it happens.
Minor league baseball is marketed as a “great family entertainment value” rather than as an opportunity to watch great athletes put their ability on display. And it differs a lot from college sports because with college you have built-in loyalty. So minor league teams rely more on promotions, between-innings gimmicks, mascots, etc. And, formerly, cheap beer; beer sales used to account for basically all of a minor league franchise’s profit. Maybe it still does but the prices at Raley Field ($8.75 microbrews!!!) are definitely big league.
Also, Buck Showalter said the other day that AAA was the most challenging level because everybody there thinks they should be in the big leagues. Maybe that applies to the fans too. Maybe attending a AAA game somehow subconsiously affirms the inferiority complex inherent in AAA towns… the bitterness that smaller cities are in the bigs and our isn’t…
I’ve been to a fair number of AAA games in the International League. It is invariably the case that few people are actually invested in the outcome of the game. To the extent anyone is paying close attention, they are watching the individual performances of the top MLB prospects or stars on rehab assignments. Everyone else is just there to soak up the atmosphere, have some beers with their friends and colleagues, or have a nice evening out with the family. This sort of bothered me, actually, when I lived in a AAA city. I still liked going to games, but I found the crowd’s lack of attention depressing.
Agreed.
Also, Raley Field feels like a stuffy suburban megachurch, not a funky cool cathedral of baseball.
Not only Ramirez and Cespedes, but also!
Since Barton and Donaldson both hit like backup catchers, they’re probably going to have to be backup catchers to stay in the big leagues.
CHili needs to hold triple BP’s daily, this is terrible, how many pop-ups today?
They need to institute the Willie Mays Hayes pop up rule.
30% of Barton’s batted balls are popups this year.
If/When Manny joins the big club, it seems like almost sure thing now that Barton’s the odd man out.
how so? wouldn’t bringing up someone who can hit make him the odd man?
heh
Barton’s still getting on base though, despite a sub .300 SLG. Kila’s been terrible since his leg injury.
They’ve been equally unproductive with the bat. 86 wRC+ for Barton, 88 for Kila. Barton’s the better defender, of course.
Yeah, they both suck. Maybe the A’s could give Carter a shot.
what is going on in the stadium announcements behind KK? it sounds like a truck rally.
I love how Fosse is fantasizing about a Weeks-Crisp double steal before either of them gets on base.
Here’s a better idea (too late now that Weeks K’d) – the first two guys get on base, then Reddick hits a motherFKing 3-run walkoff.
Isn’t now when we start blaming the manager for everything? I’ll get my torch and pitchfork ready.
Generally speak, sure. Let’s blame the dude who put the team together though.
never liked melvin myself
I don’t think the A’s are capable of hiring a manager that will be liked
I am availible for hire.
So you’re half way there.
Micro teA’se!!!
Imperceptible to the human eye.
God damn it.
I watched too much A’s baseball this weekend.
Major League
sigh, sigh, sigh-sigh-sigh.
The sound of one fan napping
I got home from my day our lt with kids just in time to see strike three to smith. This offense is painful.
i’m glad i spent the 9th in the shower. it leaves me without sin when i cast a “THE A’s STINK!”
We won?!
I blame AV. Not enough bunny foot massaging.
srsly.
wow, i think i’m glad i missed the game today. :(
I didn’t miss it and I wish I had. I should’a went to the bar.
i’m usually really antsy and weird when i miss games. instead, now, i’m totally happy and chill. ;)
Don’t sweat it, it wasn’t really an MLB game anyway… really, it was just the latest installment of an exhibition series where the owners of the winning team write a big annual check to the owners of the losing team to pretend otherwise.
Think of it as Corporate Communism and not a real sport and you’ll get the idea.
i think spending the day at the ocean was a good choice for me. ♥
Agreed. I was hoping you and G would go on a day trip.
i woke up this morning and felt like i would die if i didn’t get to touch Yemaya today.
I had to look up her origin.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt that feeling. I wonder why. Maybe I’m just more of a river person.
in that tradition, the river is Oshun. also one of my ♥
Oh wow… I’m a bit blown away. She definitely resonates, big time.
Thank you once again!
always, anytime. it makes me happy to share with you. ♥
Do you know anything of/have any experience with Chinnamasta? Is she too chaotic neutral to be trusted?
i have never worked with Her. would love to learn more, though.
As silly of a place as it might be to start, her wikipedia entry is quite extensive.
I’m pretty sure I have no interest in cutting off my own head. Other than that, I’m definitely drawn to her.
you are doing lots of tantrika work right now. :D
oh…and there is your Vagrayogini connection, too!!!
Very true.
There are still a lot of parts of me trying to fight the process, though.
been there, for sure.

yes. some of them are exceptionally demanding. :)
don’t rush anything…you’ll know who belongs in your personal pantheon. and it often does shift and change.
here’s one very interesting to me right now:

ha!
She reminds me a lot of Baubo.
LOF Baubo! have done a lot of ritual with Her.
pomba gira is like the punk rock baubo. ;)
I think you’re right. I see now that one of my main role models for my feminine side was very much a living embodiment of Pomba Gira.
there are lots of fun websites about Her. sometimes, i am Her, too. ♥
I can see that.
I grew up on the river.
need to camp on the river this year.
houseboat? nearby subdivision? used to be a buoy?
In a van.
I’d listen to her Bloom. When K says “used to be a buoy,” she knows wherefore of she speaks.
Hmmm. Suburban, kind of. Probably closer to rural than suburban. It was a huge house on the banks of the St. Joseph’s River. An acre of land, and about 4,500 square ft.
Have you ever considered turning heel?
Think of how fun it could be to be on the side that’s winning. You can even work towards being a more enlightened oppressor if you want to nurture a little liberal streak for contrarians’ sake.
You could be like a mixture of Art Bell, Glenn Beck, and Gay Ted Nugent!
hahahahahahah, OMG a gay Ted Nugent, that cracked me up.
So… just a Ted Nugent? I’m not certain he’s just in the closet.
did Bryce Harper steal the warpaint look from college softball players, or did they steal it from Bryce Harper?
I’m flipping back and forth between the Nats game and Cal trying to close it out against Washington.
and Cal is in the Womens’ College WS.
Gio 7 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 3 B, 10 K, and he has run support, 6-2 Nationals.

Livan Hernandez struck out Bryce Harper on an eephus and made him look silly. Next Harper AB- BOOM! Dinger City!

Harper SMASH, I like this team.

something snuggly about that, fo sho.
How come I always get Hunter Pence confused with Michael Bourn?
Because they look exactly alike? ;)
They were both picked up floating in the Mediterranean with gunshot wounds. After that, who can blame anyone for being confused?
I knew the Astros established an academy in Libya for a reason!
are you all out or asleep?
I’m here, digesting a fantastic dinner. Are you still in need of a pet calendar?
YES! i am in dire need of a pet calendar!
Then a pet calendar you shall have! I’ll give it to you on Saturday at the BBQ.
♥♥♥ THANK YOU so much!!! :D
You’re awesome. It will be good to know the exact dates that our pets have planned to rise up against us, as well as their secret holidays and ritual times. It will also be interesting to study a culture whose calendar is based on mealtimes rather than anything astrological.
fucking love you.
How was the doubleheader yesterday?
Fun, although the Yankee fans were difficult to tolerate in the first half.
Hello again to you :)
I lactated today!
well, there’s something i’ve never done!
Maybe I didn’t, but I sort of did.
i suck at right-clicking. ;)
Apparently 5-32% of women can lactate, unassociated with childbirth or nursing. It can also occur in males or infants (in infants, it’s called “Witch’s Milk” and is supposed to be used to feed familiars. That seems unethical in this day and age, tho…)
♥!
Well, I think I’ve run out of profound and/or interesting things to say. If you need some random entertainment, I can be of assistance for a while, but I can’t guarantee quality.
i’m stupid and bland right now.
Not stupid, but in safe mode. Not bland, but temporarily vanilla.
“Temporarily Vanilla” would have been a cool band name back in the day when bands mattered.
