Why The Fuck 4

would you PH Nomar for Barton against a RHP with Hannahan on deck? And then have Crosby followed by Hannahan in the 9th… What the fuck… dude. Why is Buck in AAA? what is going on. I don’t care that much if they win at this point, but come on… Street hasn’t thrown that hard since ’05. Cust fucking sucks. He swings more than Vlad. gah.

would you PH Nomar for Barton against a RHP with Hannahan on deck?

Because Geren has a wildly inflated opinion of Nomar’s talents? Because when he steers his stupefied gaze towards Nomar standing in the corner of the dugout with his hands stuffed inside his jacket, he thinks “Man, that guy was awesome in 2002! Why is he on the bench?”

And then have Crosby followed by Hannahan in the 9th…

I think the bigger problem is that the A’s are fielding a lineup with Crosby and Hannahan in it.

    What the fuck… dude.

    Exactly. Dude.

    Why is Buck in AAA?

Because Ryan Sweeney is going to become awesome any second now, and Rajai Davis is already awesome. And because of the Nomar thing.

    what is going on.

Mediocrity? Delusion? I just finished a book that persistently refers to “initial value problems” (though in the context of psychology, not mathematics). I took this to mean, basically, that when your point of departure is awry, the subsequent decision trajectory will also be faulty, no matter how logical each step seems. Though now that I look it up, I think I misunderstood the whole book, because that’s not what an “initial value problem” is at all. Fuck. I was about to suggest that Beane, Geren, et al should re-evaluate various ill-considered premises, but now my whole angle is shot, so forget it.

I don’t care that much if they win at this point, but come on…

It’s still fun to watch the starting pitchers get better. There is promise there.

Street hasn’t thrown that hard since ‘05.

    Fastball averaged 93mph.

    Cust fucking sucks.

    Shut up.

    He swings more than Vlad.

KTRB, last night, on the topic of Vlad’s recent haircut: Korach insisted that there was no way he went three years without a haircut. After making a lame (but expected) Samson joke, Vince said something about finding the Dead Sea Scrolls inside Vlad’s hair. Korach pretended to laugh. I shook my head.

    gah.

    Yeah.

If golf is a terrible thing to do to a nice walk in the country (– Twain, I think), then last night’s game had a similar effect on an otherwise salubrious evening. I am sorry, loyalists, but Cust has no place in the outfield big enough to hide his ineptitude, and he has no brain. The Colorado shift gave him as much as 85 fucking feet on the left side, but he wouldn’t even offer at it– in preference to alternately striking out and hitting into the teeth of a defense so tightly packed they nearly reached critical mass.

Did he never learn to bunt at the Academy? A hard bunt to the third base side and he could have run forever before the left fielder got to it. Without messing up his vaunted, if mostly ineffectual, swing.

The entire team appears listless, rudderless, going through the motions, mailing it in. Somebody needs to decide what we’re doing and act that way. If it’s kids, jettison Nomah, Jason, Springer and H2 at least, trade Matt for a budding left-sider and get on with it.

It was pathetically, brutally boring for 7 innings (I was reduced to filking on a version of “The Worst A’s in Oakland”, but there were too many choices), and interesting for the bug-infested 8th and 9th for the several fans who stayed — until Rajai came up and you, and he, and everybody else knew it was over. I’m changing Take Me Out to read “…I don’t care if I ever come back.”

Watch this space for ticket availability, if you dare.
