        One thing about trades going either way in the next few days: 2021 is the first year they had to use an option on Luzardo. He’s only 23; they can afford to be patient. Unless they think the broken hand is symptomatic of larger immaturity issues, I would not be happy to see him dealt here, especially not for 10 starts worth of Jon Lester or some similar rental.

              They’re going to trade Olson in December for two or three Luzardos. And these ones won’t even like video games.

            • lenscrafters Jul 28,2021 11:30 am || Up

              The fundamental issue isn’t trading Luzardo for a chance to win right now (I speculated that this is plausible and reasonable back in early May), it’s needing to include a Luzardo because you need cash back, which ends up taking away a huge chunk of the value you’re getting back.

              Essentially, it makes sense to trade for a Marte type in a win now move and give up lesser talent if you don’t need Marlins cash, or trade a Luzardo for something more valuable than Marte – someone with more years of control, an additional piece in return, etc, in place of cash. But when you burn significant amounts of trade capital for bucketloads of cash, that’s what I just can’t agree with. This is only for Fisher’s benefit cause he can’t bare to chip in two more cents than he wants to.

              A team that relies on young, cheap cost controlled talent cannot operate successfully by burning said cheap, cost controlled talent for cash. It’s unhealthy for both the present and future state of the organization; it’s disgusting. And yes other teams get cash back in trades too, but the A’s have taken this to such an egregious level that it’s actively hampering their trades and returns.

              • Future Ed Jul 28,2021 11:40 am || Up

                I agree with all of this. Fischer has worn out all goodwill long before this trade.

      KLaw thinks the deal is fairish, fwiw:

      Luzardo has been up to 98 mph and can sit 94-97 mph as a starter, with a plus-plus changeup and a curveball that’s very effective left-on-left. You can certainly ignore the lack of durability and think you’re looking at a No. 2 starter, with the gap between his control (above-average, trending towards plus) and his command (average, if that) being the reason he’s not more. His curveball has been closer to average this year, and major-league hitters crushed his fastball in his limited time there, so the Marlins appear to be buying very low. I see the stuff, but I can’t put much faith in him as a projected starter when he’s never even thrown 2/3 of the workload of even a back-end rotation guy in one season…

      Marte is heading for free agency while having a career year at age 32, with a career-best walk rate and a triple-slash line that nearly matches his All-Star season from 2016. His BABIP is way up this year, which seems extremely unlikely to continue, and his hard-hit rate isn’t high enough to support it. He’s still an elite defender in center, and that could carry forward, but he looks like a big overpay waiting to happen, given his age and the fluky nature of his season to date. That said, for two months, I’d be ecstatic to have him, and the A’s can use Marte to push Seth Brown to the bench and possibly release or demote Stephen Piscotty entirely, which is a huge upgrade at the plate and on defense. I imagine some A’s fans will be upset to see Luzardo go, but his health record over the last five and a half years makes this a far more even exchange than it appears on paper.

      • nevermoor Jul 29,2021 9:53 am || Up

        Both things are true, IMO. The deal makes sense and solves our #1 need. Also, we should have gotten a prospect back instead of $4.5M

      Wilson is likely the guy coming off the 26-man roster…but how about Piscotty? DFA him, nobody’s claiming that contract, and let him be a co-fan favorite with Bolt in Las Vegas Ballpark for the rest of the season. See and this is the other problem. Look, you want to be cheap and just go after efficiency? Ok. I dont like it or agree with it but it is a thing. But if you are going to do that and not just be the Pirates then you have to be ruthless and realize a sunk cost and start DFAing folks. I could never do it but thats why Im not a billionaire and dont own a team.

          If the A’s were going for financial relief in the Marte trade, it’s frustrating they couldn’t have done it by dumping Piscotty and his contract on the Marlins. Obviously there’s more net cash the Marlins would be taking on, but it would’ve been more fair overall if we were sending Luzardo.

    Manaea wasn’t going to get through 9 with that pitch count, so it’s just as well that he gave up a hit when he did and removed any temptation to overuse him.

      Makes me think of the hot springs scene in the dreadful movie “Dante’s Peak” (it’s a bit legendary among soakers).

      Edit: I was trying to go in a little different direction from where andeux was with it, and looking back at this I see I might have freaked people out. Sorry if I caused any concern by botching it that way. It’s suggestive but SFW.

      Which led to the great matchup of Chafin-Johnson.

    Didn’t take long for Chafin to join the Run Scoring Wild Pitch Club.

    Two brothers from Croatia: Not a local moving company, but awesome double gold medal winning rowers.

    I really want Kyle Schwarber…maybe some of that Marlins money can be used to afford the rest of his contract.

      So we’re gonna have to wait in really long lines and it is going to be unbearably muggy?

        Heh. Not Bob’s fault that he’s the only SS on the roster. And with Marte here, he shouldn’t be tempted to hit him 2nd any more (he was already back to 8th for the last four games).

    Enjoyed the women’s 8s rowing final, Canada winning gold to break US streak of three straight golds. Love the boats with coxswains. Also love the word coxswain.
