Not getting suckered into thinking you have a chance is the new market inefficiency.
The prospect of not having Diekman on the team is pretty good.
One thing about trades going either way in the next few days: 2021 is the first year they had to use an option on Luzardo. He’s only 23; they can afford to be patient. Unless they think the broken hand is symptomatic of larger immaturity issues, I would not be happy to see him dealt here, especially not for 10 starts worth of Jon Lester or some similar rental.

Horrible trade and I’ve definitely been critical of Luzardo. Once again, cheapness systematically fucks over this organization.

Agree with these replies. I’ve already told multiple friends that when Luzardo figures it out and wins a Cy Young they may want to give me space for a day or 2.
I agree with Soaker upthread. Do not like this deal at all. Giving up on cost-controlled high potential young talent to upgrade a team which still isn’t close to championship caliber seems like a big mistake.

I think luzardo is could be great and it will suck seeing him put up 5 WAR in 2023/4 and wondering what prospect haul we could have gotten, but I will be doing that from a waning interest after the collapse of 2021.

Marte is a good fit for our short-term needs (suggested by lenscrafter a month ago), but I agree with FSU that it’s not enough to make a real difference.

They’re going to trade Olson in December for two or three Luzardos. And these ones won’t even like video games.
The fundamental issue isn’t trading Luzardo for a chance to win right now (I speculated that this is plausible and reasonable back in early May), it’s needing to include a Luzardo because you need cash back, which ends up taking away a huge chunk of the value you’re getting back.
Essentially, it makes sense to trade for a Marte type in a win now move and give up lesser talent if you don’t need Marlins cash, or trade a Luzardo for something more valuable than Marte – someone with more years of control, an additional piece in return, etc, in place of cash. But when you burn significant amounts of trade capital for bucketloads of cash, that’s what I just can’t agree with. This is only for Fisher’s benefit cause he can’t bare to chip in two more cents than he wants to.
A team that relies on young, cheap cost controlled talent cannot operate successfully by burning said cheap, cost controlled talent for cash. It’s unhealthy for both the present and future state of the organization; it’s disgusting. And yes other teams get cash back in trades too, but the A’s have taken this to such an egregious level that it’s actively hampering their trades and returns.
I agree with all of this. Fischer has worn out all goodwill long before this trade.
I am going to enjoy these two months and ignore the rotting husk.

Wilson is likely the guy coming off the 26-man roster…but how about Piscotty? DFA him, nobody’s claiming that contract, and let him be a co-fan favorite with Bolt in Las Vegas Ballpark for the rest of the season. If he gets his act back together he can compete for the Canha vacancy down in Mesa.
See and this is the other problem. Look, you want to be cheap and just go after efficiency? Ok. I dont like it or agree with it but it is a thing. If the A’s were going for financial relief in the Marte trade, it’s frustrating they couldn’t have done it by dumping Piscotty and his contract on the Marlins. Obviously there’s more net cash the Marlins would be taking on, but it would’ve been more fair overall if we were sending Luzardo.

One thing I will say is the A’s are typically really good at evaluating pitchers. Maybe they think Luzardo is broken? Other than that, lenscrafters said it better than me above.

I can’t take Anaheim seriously because of their pitching. Trout hasn’t been able to save them from that in the past and I don’t see it this year either. I stated my concerns about the Mariners in the setup to that series thread, and regardless of what magic potion DiPoto is going to reveal in the next couple days I would put them at the bottom of the five teams I mentioned.
