Friends, I’m in Oakland. I didn’t kill Mom, Aunt, or Cousin yet. It’s actually the warmest it’s ever been here, I think. Can’t wait to see some of you this weekend. I’ve missed you bitches.
welcome home!!!
Think I can get an interview while I’m out here?
“How great does it feel to be in Oakland?”
Probably the only interview I could get.
it’s worth a shot!
If you guys have jet lag and wake up super early, you can head on over to downtown San Francisco and stand out in the street at 5:12 AM and sing “San Francisco, open your Golden Gate, you let no stranger wait outside your door!” with the mayor. Of course, then you’ll have to remind your family that the party is because you’re on top of a bunch of faults that have been known to rupture and kill thousands of people without notice.
Also, I presume you’re going to the game on Sunday but if any members of the party are not, there is the Hunky Jesus contest and the observance of 4/20 going on over in Golden Gate Park.
Leaving Sunday. :-(
I really want to head downtown tomorrow morning. But not enough to get out of bed.
I’m not getting out of bed until noon. People were starting to tell me I looked exhausted/like shit.
No one talks to me like that. Mainly because it goes without saying.
It’s a good time to visit!
Posted from Evans Diamond on the Cal campus, where Primera’s chorus group will be singing the national anthem anon.
@Jennifer: somehow whenever you come to town you bring the heat.
And strikes.
Also, HA!
Cal’s home unis are nice, crisp white with gold piping, navy lettering. Most guys rockin the high socks. Washington looks like the Rockies at a road spring game.
There was a water leak in our hotel. How very Oakland.
San Jose’s arena had a power failure in advance of the first game of the Sharks playoffs.
And…. is anyone watching Turn?
Cal’s park has huge portraits of some of their all-time greats. Conor Jackson is up there. So is Lance Blankenship. No Jeff Kent though. Why’s that I wonder.
Noo melvin?
Noo.
Xavier nady?
Yes, Nady was up there. I didn’t recognize the other 4 so enshrined.
Looking it up, Kent had a great freshman year for Cal, then a kind of crummy second year before turning pro. Lance Blankenship on the other hand:
Friend who was a bullpen catcher at cal said kent pointedly hates the cal baseball program.
Didn’t he donate money to help keep it afloat back when they were ready to give it the ax?
Yes, he did. Conor Jackson as I recall was especially active/generous with that campaign.
Spent a wonderful weekend in 84 or 85 at beautiful Pete Beiden field yelling at Lance and feeling liked we caused a couple of key errors.
Sharks are just annihilating the Kings, up 5-0 now. It would be so great for this team to get a dominating series win for once.
This is seriously fun. They’ve also hit the post 3 times.
All 4 lines have scored tonight.
Cal frosh pitcher Jeffries looking sharp, retired first 11 batters before giving up a clean single.
Then two more singles and Wash leads 1-0.
I hate off days.
Not only off day, all baseball is done
And it so eaaaarly. How are we going to entertain ourselves tonight?
I already watched the scott sizemore anchored triple pplay
My mom wanted to come to your house, Ed.
Don’t. Its too touristy now
Why is your house touristy? Does this have something to do with AirBNB?
lol
With a pitchfork?
She loves Ed.
She know I am on a first name basis with child molesters, rapists and murderers?
Pfft. Who isn’t?
Me.
Liar.
SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS
Thanks, and go As.
Not a bad start.
Primera forced me to bail on Cal game after a Bruno HR tied it 1-1 in the 5th. But on way home I got to hear two Sharks goals in like 20 seconds right at the end of the first period! 3-0! Crush the Kings!
And now the fire alarms are going off.
What hotel, maybe I can bring the Building Department down on their asses.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
I’m not sharing that info. I don’t want you knocking on my door in 30 minutes.
What if he brings pizza?
This is the start of a bad porn. I’m in.
Does your copy machine need repairing?
What will he do next? I dont know, fix her cable?
And cake.
Wow. You guys really get me.
If you’re not diabetic now, you will be when we’re done with you.
I’m excited.
You’ll be staring in “Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’: the Violet Beauregarde Story” by the time we’re done with you.
And pie.
The A’s are currently last in the league in BsR on Fangraphs. Too many TOOTBLANs, plus Barton’s mistake, and it’s unsurprising even though the A’s are middle of the pack in SB.
I’d never even heard of this … 1945 bomber crashes into the Empire State building:
I bet the pilot was a dego or a kraut
Not a nip?
Have you heard about the ghost blimp?
I read that to the end and thought I was getting an answer
False advertising, but at least I wasted a few minutes of your life.
its neat though
See, Daly City is a footnote in history!
Ah, So we have an explanation for Sogard’s behavior
Haha, great response to that question
From the Tweeter thingy:
Oakland Athletics
Verified account â€@Athletics
The #Athletics agree to terms with Sean Doolittle on a new 5-year contract. Contract runs through ’18, includes club options for ’19, ’20.
Hrm weird, kinda looks like he might be the closer now?
Hmm, we’ll see, I gotta think they still see Johnson in that role for this year.
I agree with what bear88 said the other day, I love Doolittle when he’s hitting his spots but he essentially throws the fastball almost every pitch, hard to be a great reliever with that repertoire unless your name is Mo.
brian.only has convinced me to sally forth to the ballpark tonight, see some of you FKers there!
Woo!
Woohoo!
Woohoohoo!
Woohoohoowho?
woohoohoo smith. just open the door and let me in.
I gotta think this Oakland Museum exhibit hits the sweet spot of some of you FKers’ interests:
Vinyl: The Sound and Culture of Records. “Organized by OMCA Senior Curator of Art René de Guzman, Vinyl opens on April 19, 2014, to coincide with Record Store Day, an annual event that celebrates the unique cultural contributions of independent record retailers worldwide.“
Oh sweet, Rene’s a DJ to boot!
Has this been posted/discussed here? Assassination, blackmail and Zeta cartel death threats associated with Yasiel Puig’s journey to the US.
Pirates get Ike Davis for minor league reliever and a PTBNL. Damn, would’ve loved for the A’s to be in on that.
Not just any reliever; they got the guy we traded for Chris Resop.
Who was available and undrafted in this year’s Rule 5 draft. Really don’t get this for the Mets.
The PTBNL is said to be significant
Obviously.

The Cardinals announcers say a memo went out today regarding the transfer rule, after an issue at second base on an attempted turn of the double play last night. Paraphrasing the memo, they said the fielder must have the ball in his hand with the hand moving forward for the transfer to be confirmed as completed, at least on those second base plays (they didn’t address the outfield issues). If correct, it’s a strict new interpretation. Coming next, baseball enforces the tuck rule.
I can understand it’s use at second base on double plays. But nowhere else.
Yeah, maybe I just haven’t seen enough of this year’s controversial transfer plays, but it seems to me as though the issue on outfield plays is the one that’s been all fouled up through the new interpretations. Because everyone used to know what a catch in the OF was and now they don’t. Whereas rulings on transfers during infield plays have always been more subject to the specific circumstances of the play (and also don’t usually cause baserunner confusion).
At second it’s right in front of them and the transfer is always so quick that it’s easy to address. And no one is going to run back to the wrong base if they don’t know if it’s safe or out.
I don’t like it at 2nd, either.
At second they move so fast you can’t tell the difference between a failed transition to the hand and never having had control.
I think,if they stop the balls momentum with the glove and move it towards the bare hand purposefully (not accidentally), its a catch and failed transfer, therefore an out.
Well, of course they do it intentionally, but they doesn’t mean they ever have control of the ball. Otherwise just touching the ball within the inside of the glove would be the rule and there’d be no such thing as a bobble.
It does remind me a lot of the tuck rule, in that a change that was (presumably) intended to clarify an edge case in the rules instead ends up being applied more broadly, in a way that goes against pretty much everyone’s common sense notion of what the rule always has and should be.
Tuck rule thing could have and should be fixed by saying any forward pass that doesn’t land beyond the line of scrimmage to be in play/fumbled. Would make things a lot more interesting.
There were always lots of ways of fixing the tuck rule. The fact that they refused to acknowledge that it needed fixing was the problem.
isn’t that exactly the tuck rule?
Scott Sizemore being productive for the Yankees just makes it even more annoying that we have Nick Punto as the RH half of our 2B platoon.
Don’t worry. He’ll get hurt. Oh wait. He’s not on the A’s anymore.
And there’s Mark Ellis, just off the DL, driving in the tying run. Mark looks like he’s put on 10 pounds since the last time I saw him, though.
I remember that draft very clearly. I was very disappointed Springer didn’t drop to the A’s but hey, can’t be too unhappy with what we got instead. Can’t believe it’s already been almost 3 years…
Yeah I remember both the UConn talents Myers and Springer were kids that I was interested in at the time. Loved the Gray pick though. Way too much value for where he got nabbed.
Now all the elevators are out in yhe hotel.
I am also gonna have one less friend to go to games with because of a drunk driver.
So this is really cool of the A’s:
The utter selfishness of drunk driving pisses me off.
territorial rights?
It’s 4/20 weekend, so let’s fire up a smoking set from today’s birthday boy, as he leads his ensemble though a slew of Parliafunkadelicment classics in a teeny tiny club in Farmingdale near where I (allegedly) grew up. If it’s the uncut Bomb P-Funk you crave, there’s only one place to be for you right now, and that’s over at the blog for a taste of The One with the one and only Bernie Worrell, who is 70 years young this day.
funny title.
Did anyone partake of Record Store Day today? Most of the “special” releases are crap, but I took the opportunity to make my first trip to a shop that I’ve been meaning to check out for a while now and it was rad. Of course, now that I’m home, I really wish I had dropped an extra $8 to pick up some German post-punk.
no. I went on a bike ride with the youngest.
I steered him into a SF tradition. Getting his wheel caught in a train track for a spill.
Doh.
Ow. My knees emphathize.
Wow. The Krysmopompas track was super cool!
Yeah, I can’t remember where I heard of them and maybe if I had been able to make that connection I would have sprung for the record. Now I kind of want to hustle back to that record store and buy it. They had Swell Maps vinyl reissues too.
What’s a record store?
Sounds.
Let’s fire up the second of two 4/20 weekend posts… this one hails from the (highly cannabis-appropriate) city of Oakland, California and features a smoking performance by Roxy Music, 35 years ago this day in the old Municipal Auditorium (later the Kaiser Auditorium) over on 10th St. It’s an Easter Oaksterdam special, rolled bluntly for you if you’ll only spliff on over to the blog :P
