Sunday games thread 472

Big sports day. Tune in now to the livestream of the Mavericks Invitational big wave surfing contest. Seriously, now…as I write this the swells are about to roll in to start the second prelim heat.

Come noon it’s time to watch the Atlanta Tony Gonzalezes hosting the San Francisco Pol Pots. Then at 3:30 the Baltimore Manslaughterers face the New England Witch Burners. Winners to the Über Bowl in two weeks in N’Awlins.

And at 3:00 it’s welcome back Sharks!

That site you linked for Mavericks footage is really bogged down. I guess that’s what happens when you have a front page link from FK, perhaps the highest profile site on the web.

I’m mostly able to watch the stream OK, with occasional choppiness. Mavericks is a big deal. Waves are picking up, too, now through three of (I think) six or eight heats in the opening round.

            ATL: 26.2 PF, 18.7 PA

In reality, the only thing SF about the Niners is that they play in Candlestick. Their headquarters and practice facility has been in Santa Clara since 1987, and as I remember, they were in Redwood City before then. At least the Raiders are based in Alameda.

There are almost always really good kickers who go UDFA.

It really confuses me how little value is placed on kickers, when they are always asked to win/lose games on the final play so often.

I guess they’d rather use picks on guys who play more often, knowing the kickers will always be there.

The other areas I’d like to see addressed are WR, DL, and LB. Not that the DL or LB’s or bad, I just think they need more depth.

I think that remains to be seen. LMJ is really good, and AJ Jenkins is an unknown, mostly because they didn’t use him.

I think Safety is the #1 need, because Goldson is going to be allowed to walk.

an heir apparent for Justin Smith is also needed, but it can be a project player.

I still associate New England with the Steve Grogan Patriots, with the Minuteman squatting to take a dump as the helmet logo. Also the snowplow dude clearing the way for the placekicker. The Patriots don’t really register as anybody I hate “the most of all teams” anywhere near the way the Red Sox do. Then again, I don’t have any particular passion about the NFL, I just watch two or three random games a week from the end of baseball season through January to pass some time.

Definitely do it. Growing up, my dad was into trying to find low-priced tickets from scalpers right before the game. We ended up getting into Super Bowl XVII, but shut out of Super Bowl XXI. We also went to a Rose Bowl, one game each for the ’88 and ’89 World Series, and a number of Raiders games when they were in LA. These have been some of the greatest memories I have had with my dad growing up. I’m looking forward to doing some three-generation games now.

My Kaepernick/Tebow comment was definitely true in 2010; those two had similar skill sets but Tebow was in the SEC while Kaepernick was in oblivion in Reno. Given the rapid changes in the NFL game, e.g. RGIII, it suggests there may still be hope for Tebow if he were paired with the right coaching staff.

I guess I’d ask whether you watch a lot of these competition-based reality shows. Because despite how it may seem, it’s not easy to play that host role, framing challenges for viewers and contestants at same time, keeping everyone else’s banter feeling spontaneous, handling the parts you do every week like vote-offs in a non-canned way. Many of these hosts are awful at this; I think Padma is pretty good. She’s less good as a judge of the food, but I figure her vote probably doesn’t count as much as the other judges anyway.

The idea of a 5th umpire is good, but he should be part of the regular rotation. This way, the whole crew gets to a turn at reviewing calls, which should prevent resentment from being a factor. My guess is that the umps would love a chance to work from a nice air conditioned booth every 5th game, especially on a road trip through Texas, St Louis, and Kansas City during July.

    • Soaker Jan 21,2013 11:10 am || Up

Re dugout screens: while the play is under review, just let the stadium video operator show the replay on the Megatron board so the fans can see it too. Football officials can survive that scrutiny and MLB umpires ought to be able to live with it.

During NFL reviews, the in-house fans watch the same replays as the referee is seeing “under the hood”. I don’t think either the NFL or NCAA has ever had the blanket ban on showing “controversial” plays which the MLB umpires have been able to maintain.

Love the numbers but his ‘motivational’ issues may be a red flag.
To be fair I have no idea what the personal politics are like in Cuban baseball.

We do however have a great window into what his general makeup is like in one Yoenis Cespedes.
Considering we have been a big player in recent Cuban FA negotiations this is pretty durned exciting!

I’d guess the motivational issues were more related to wanting out of Cuba. But that’s just a guess. Certainly a yellow flag at the very least and one that would require a good response to when asked about.

I think that playing for a Major League team (and making Major League money) would clear those issues right up.

Me too. Given our SS situation and those numbers, I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at him.

I’m thinking/ hoping the ‘year off’ will give some teams pause, get er’ done Billy.

Corrected for the improper use on FK of the first and 14th letters on the alphabet together in caps. :)

    So an update:

Went to MOMA with PhD girl. She is well cultured and smart, but not particularly more so that I.

    Crisis adverted.

Why would that be a crisis? The great thing about people who are smarter or more cultured is that you can learn from them.

      • DFA Jan 21,2013 8:18 pm || Up

I like people to be cultured in different things than I am to maintain balance, but generally on the same level.

Not me. More knowledgeable, less knowledgeable, people are people. As long as they’re not obnoxious or insufferable, I’m happy to get to know them.

but being in a esoteric PhD program doesn’t guarantee that someone is blow-you-away smart, of course.

        I agree.

I’m just going to say that I don’t care for all this football nonsense. I am sorry that Benito is sick. I hope he gets better soon.
