Big sports day. Tune in now to the livestream of the Mavericks Invitational big wave surfing contest. Seriously, now…as I write this the swells are about to roll in to start the second prelim heat.
Come noon it’s time to watch the Atlanta Tony Gonzalezes hosting the San Francisco Pol Pots. Then at 3:30 the Baltimore Manslaughterers face the New England Witch Burners. Winners to the Über Bowl in two weeks in N’Awlins.
And at 3:00 it’s welcome back Sharks!
That site you linked for Mavericks footage is really bogged down. I guess that’s what happens when you have a front page link from FK, perhaps the highest profile site on the web.
I’m mostly able to watch the stream OK, with occasional choppiness. Mavericks is a big deal. Waves are picking up, too, now through three of (I think) six or eight heats in the opening round.
growing up in orange county, if we were good in school, when the teacher would check out one of the 3 or so surf films for friday film day
Surf movies were a blowoff Friday teacher staple in Hawaii too.
Up here it was Warren Miller ski movies.
I’d just like to say I approve of your alternate team names.
I’d prefer the San Francisco Pol Pot Noodles.
I bet Jesa doesn’t.
Hey, I love her, but a witch rooting for New England is just wrong.
Heh
She probably doesn’t like the way this game is going even more.
49ers 37
Falcons 24
DFA to UC: WHOSE GONNA BE DRUNKER THAN US? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBODY!
Go Sabres! (On NBC now!)
No, go Flyers!
I’m having a hard time warming up to hockey this quickly.
I need something to
entertain mepiss me off until baseball season starts.LOL ManUre
Deuce!!!!!
SHould I have heard of any of these sports ball games? Except Mavericks, of course.
Let me see if I can get 3 out of 4.
Picks (current Caesars lines):
Atlanta +4
Under 48
New England -7.5
Under 50.5
I’ll go with:
Atlanta +4
Over 48
New England -7.5
Over 50.5
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and predict your under bet on the Niners game is unlikely to win.
was the under really that low?
I didn’t think 48 was low at all.
Regular season averages:
SF: 24.8 PF, 17.1 PA
ATL: 26.2 PF, 18.7 PA
I thought Kaepernick’s Cinderella ride might end in a championship game on the road in a dome.
Technically it will, neutral site or not.
Under is looking more promising in the nightcap. It helped that Brady/Belichick screwed up their clock management at the end of the half.
Oh wow, this was a major reply fail, which should’ve been to Soaker.
Yeah, the Over in the NFC game was the only one of those four picks I got right.
Unfortunately in (no one cares about my) 16picks the line was 3.5.
It really did a ton of moving, depending on where you look.
…and I prove yet again why, when in a casino, I pass by the sports book and head straight for the buffet.
Given the number of people who are going to be home watching the 49ers game, I think it’s a perfect day to take the family ice skating.
That’s where I was headed before the work meltdown struck half an hour ago.
Does that mean you arent going or just delayed?
The family has gone; I’m stuck wrestling with a supercomputer :-(
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
Pod-bay doors nothing – suddenly half of my data files have turned into symbolic links to themselves.
Im going tonight with blond girl from Popscene thursday.
We went to the SF Embarcadero outdoor rink two weeks ago and it was awesome. I think that rink is closed down now, though.
there is always yuerba buena
Yes, but for a family of 4 Oakland Ice has a family special. $34 including skates. Best price around.
cool
Oakland Ice Center rocks, too. Huge surface, well managed by the Sharks org, strong community involvement.
This is what im doing tonight
In conclusion, I was surprised by how quickly the pups took to skating, especially the elder. That said, we should have left when the zamboni came out. In the short time we skated after, I FKed up my back and the elder pup banged her head pretty hard. On balance, still a great day. I just hope my back is better quickly.
I am rooting against a Falcons-Ravens Super Bowl, because that would truly be for the birds.
The Lawless Gold Miners vs. The Tea Wasters Dressed Like Native Americans!
Pronouncing the J in Julio differently than the J in Jones always sounds weird to me.
He should open a knife sharpening shop.
asvd
Now he has time!
I’m pretty sure the job of the safety is to not allow the receiver to get beyond him.
if you ask denver they agree with this
Mavericks is into the semi-finals now. Waves mostly good but a little short of massive.
And just like that the hugest swells of the day start rolling in. Very cool.
And now the livestream is overloaded and unwatchable :(
Finals will start soon; alternate feed working at http://live.redbull.tv/events/178/mavericks-invitational-2013/ .
It’d be nice if the 49ers showed up.
Wow. I’m getting close to heading out for that needed exercise and saving my NFL energy for the New England game.
Much as I’m enjoying this score, I’m not counting SF out yet by any means.
That was an outstanding catch.
The radio color announcer (James Lofton?) just said Frank Gore is running “right up the butt” of the guard. That sounds painful
hes a powerful up the butt runner
You get used to it.
This game is by no means over.
LaMichael James got speeeeeed.
Isn’t that considered a PED?
Kaepernick to Davis is becoming a thing today.
I guess Mike Nolan figures Davis is no good, so they don’t need to guard him.
Makes sense. Ignore him all year. Now that the defense is thinking you’re not going for him, they put all their attention to defending Crabtree Davis is more likely to be open.
I think the bigger problem was that the LB’s were watching for Kaep to run.
Man, so far this year’s NFL postseason really delivers. Hella entertaining.
It has been the most compelling playoffs that i can remember
Niners D still needs to do something.
Falcon’s first four possessions: TD TD FG TD. Afterwards: zero points.
TD TD FG Punt TD
you know, every once in a while I turn on the football. I am not that interested. I feel bad for those of you that root for the local team, and I am please with the satisfation of the local’s detractors, but I think the football would be tolerable if there were a 2:00 minute clock. As soon as you get the ball you have 2 minutes with it, no downs, 2 minutes.give the teams 9 time outs in a game and 2 minutes with the ball. and force a team to re-kick the ball if there was a touchback
Or they could just make it baseball.
oooo, I like it, tell me more about this idea
See, all the rules of football? Toss them. And you replace them with all the rules of baseball. It’s really as simple as that.
Bonk.
Doink
David Akers channeling him some vintage Scott Norwood there… I hope Mike V isn’t gonna go all Buffalo ’66 on his ass.
That FKER cost me $500 (because I had niners 1 and falcons 4 in a betting grid at the office)
ok, That’s a penalty?
whatevs NFL.
Wow.
Just wow.
The Crabtree of Liberty will not get to be watered by the blood of Patriots if this keeps up.
What a game this is.
Obviously SF played a lot better while I was out than they did while I was watching the early part of the game.
God damn, this game is fun.
Howdy, stranger.
What’s going on, doc?
Those Burger King commercials for the chicken sandwiches remind me of
Oh…….lord.
Jeebus, she looks like a blow up doll.
that’s the idea, no?
UC and I got sausages after the game
I followed it up with terrible Chinese food. Mistakes were made.
I was pretty drunk
Likewise. Did it affect your night later? I spiraled pretty quickly into headaches and complaints.
no… her being kinda a bimbo did.
I think the Niners’ DBs should spend more effort making plays and less on bitching to the refs.
Might be a smart idea.
Like they did on the last two plays. WOW.
Here’s the ballgame
Game saving play by Brooks right there. Wow.
49ERS GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!!!
Need to get the first, first.
Not really.
Unless the Niners epically fail on this punt, it’s a done deal at this point.
I bet Seattle was thinking something similar last week.
Totally different situation.
Okay. NOW they’re going to the superbowl.
Not gonna lie, I was rooting for a game winning Tony Gonzalez TD. Congrats to the Niners though.
Thirteen seconds, minus however long the punt return takes.
SUPER BOWL!
First the Giants, now the Niners. This is getting intolerable.
And Stanford.
I actually don’t really have anything against the Niners. They’re not actively dicking over Oakland like the Giants are.
Those of us in the older generation still remember the disgusting amount of “fans” who, apparently, had been Niner fans their entire lives, but only appeared in the fall of 1981. It was about as insufferable as the Gnats three years ago.
I agree with you, though, that the Niners aren’t actively trying to drive the Raiders out of the area. They even designed the Santa Clara stadium to have two home-team locker rooms.
really? they did. that’s cool.
Apparently that’s what cause the raiders to drop the hollywood park stadium and retun to oakland. the NFL wanting the stadium to be shared
Sharing the new stadium makes far too much sense. Obviously, the Raiders will never go for it.
this… it is incredibly logical thus it will never happen
It’s logical, but it would be undeniably weird to have an Oakland football team and a San Francisco football team, neither of which actually plays in either of those cities.
Neither “New York” football team plays in New York.
this. football because of its schedule it an incredible wase of economic development money
Right, but neither do they purport to be from two separate cities within the area.
In reality, the only thing SF about the Niners is that they play in Candlestick. Their headquarters and practice facility has been in Santa Clara since 1987, and as I remember, they were in Redwood City before then. At least the Raiders are based in Alameda.
Yep.
Yep, Niners HQ used to be in RC. My neighbors! Okay, they all lived in the nicer neighborhoods than I did, but close enough.
Would be ironic indeed, should the Raiders wind up in Santa Clara.
I am all for shared space (but I don’t want to start the density not density thread)
I’m a Niners fan mainly because they were the only team in the area when I got into football. Growing up seeing them win a few Super Bowls didn’t hurt.
I was born in 86 so i certainly didn’t appear in 81
Seriously. I literally feel queasy…literally!…at the thought of the Giants and Niners winning championships in the same year.
Technically it wouldn’t be the same year.
let mikev win a championship this year.
also me and UC
This
Second week in a row that Vegas nailed the Atlanta line.
Wasn’t that the A’s Z-man photographer coming out on the field with Harbaugh?
He’s done Niners games forever, too.
Niners since ’73, I think. A’s since ’81.
Crap.
Here we go, here we go, Ravens…
where you at dan? you gonna make some games this summer?
Oh, definitely. I don’t know how many I can make, but I’ll definitely make it out for a handful.
cool.
I was 17 the last time the 49ers played in the Super Bowl.
I was…you don’t want to know.
Not born. We know. ;-)
Welp, I walked right into that one.
Just a sparkle in daddy’s eye!
I don’t know how old I was because I don’t know when that would have been
1995, but I hadn’t turned 18 yet.
24
I was 20 … the last time the Raiders won a Super Bowl.
/goes off to a corner to cry
Pretty sure I win any sports fan futility contest easily.
Yeah, I don’t recall any Cub-fan FKers or Cleveland FKers to even threaten that title.
Until we have that Vikes-Bills Super Bowl, I think it’s a draw.
Fair enough.
I was almost 9
I was 19. You’re just a baby!
http://twitpic.com/bwxtar
heh
The second one is LOL-worthy.
Is he having the sex with that giant turtle?
TM?
I don’t know, but the turtle definitely isn’t smiling.
I blame Oakland.
those thugs in oakland, no wonder no one goes to the games
eh i tried to get UC to make out with a cute girl.
UC tried to get me to make out with a cute girl.
this is now we celebrated.
I am really getting tired of hearing TV commentators and reporters saying how great it is to be Bay Area Sports Fan right now. I have heard it on TV at least 20 times in the last hour. The last time I checked, I am a Bay Area Sports Fan and I don’t really think its all that great at all.
I choose to interpret those statements as including the facts that the A’s and Warriors are good. Otherwise they make me angry.
ditto
Yupyup.
Woo! I don’t care who the Niners play, I’m so excited!
And you just can’t hide it, can you?
I’m about to lose control.
I think I like it!
Oh man, that was a nasty hit.
I thought he was dead.
For a second, I did too.
By none other than Bernard. Karmell. Pollard.
Poor Jesa. :( If you’re here, HUGS! ♥
Holy shit is the Harbaugh hype going to be intolerable.
Plus two weeks of Ray Lewis.
yup
As long as this airs a few times, I can live with that.
Harbowl.
God I hope the 49ers end the career of Ray Lewis with a loss.
This.
I don’t think God listens to you over the serial killer.
hahahahahahaha
the game is not over, why is the band on the field?
They refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed?
Not that day, no.
Well, both the Harbaughs managed a second-half shutout today.
IS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO SHOW US 15 SECONDS OF RAY LEWIS’ BUTTCRACK????????
There was a “Thank You, Lord!” in the audio and there will certainly be plenty of that in the next two weeks.
Can’t be too careful; he might be hiding a knife in there.
whut?
I can’t FK’ing stand Ray Lewis, he is intolerably intolerable. He makes me want to drink bottle after bottle of absinthe until my liver explodes.
Ray Lewis sure knows when the cameras are on him…he also knows when to burn clothes to escape prison as well it would seem.
Deadspin Championship Weeked GIFs.
I like this one – it’s kinda like the football version of the A-Rod glove-slap.
And the announcers talked about how Brady could have hurt himself there.
Not, you know, kicking Ed Reed.
Tom Brady is a god and can do no wrong.
Reckless challenge with studs showing. Easy red card.
When my niece was 4, she and my sister were kicking the ball around at the park. One of my sister’s kicks got past the kid, and my sister yelled “GOAL!” My niece ran up, held her hand as high as she could, and shouted “RED CARD!”
She hates to lose.
This one should come in useful when the Niners fall on their faces next year.
Here’s an even better symbol of futility:
That seems a little mean.
True. I’ve got non-Niners fans all over who think right now is a great time to rain on our parade. I guess if they’re miserable, the want us to be miserable too.
Yes, and?
Just letting you know that we can dish it right back.
That’s fair. I’m a sports loyalist: I love my teams win or lose, and I hate their rivals lose or win.
I don’t consider the 49ers a rival to the Raiders…they aren’t in the same conference and they hardly ever play each other…now, the Broncos, Chiefs and Chargers can all eat shit and die however.
I used to hate the Raiders, but it’s mostly faded over the last couple of years. But I really bristle when people compare the 49ers to the Giants.
FUCK THE GIANTS (in all sports)
i love you
Thanks, and go As.
YES!!!
REC’D! :-)
Well, they play in the same city and they’re both winning a ton right now so you can see why people compare them…also I’d imagine most Giants fans that like football are 49ers fans so it makes a lot of sense.
I think it has more to do with hating SF than anything else.
I’d hate to live there…but it’s fun place to visit.
I’d love to live there. I’m tired of just visiting.
It’s in my bottom 10 of places to live…it’s great but it’s not for me.
SC is in my bottom 10.
This. I hate the raiders because they fuck up my baseball field. Otherwise I couldn’t give two fucks.
Well, what you posted is true so you have that going for you…still mean though. As far as people raining on your parade…fuck em’ your team is going for Super Bowl win number 6.
The funniest is a friend of mine whose a Chargers fan. Because the Chargers have been relevant when?
That would basically be never…Dan Fouts was cool though.
SI grad, that’s why.
What’s SI?…to me that’s Sports Illustrated.
St. Ignatius College Prep.
Well, that sounds fancy…I’m just a simple country doctor/public school boy myself.
My alma mater. Hated it when I was there, but my rose-colored glasses came in recently.
I can’t say I ever think about my HS alma mater much…the main thing I got out of it was some great life long friends.
1994
I heard they played in a super bowl that season and lost to some team that I just cant place right now.
IIRC, they were 16 point underdogs and still couldn’t cover.
The Sequel to 1984.
1994: Big Brothererrr
I just wanted to say congratulations to the 49ers fans on FK and to any Ravens fans that might be here as well. Hopefully it’ll be a good Super Bowl.
I think it’s gonna be a great Super Bowl.
It has the makings of a good game…I’ll skip the Harbaugh Bowl stuff and all the Ray Lewis crap…basically I’ll just ignore most of ESPN for the next two weeks…biggest downside is football super-genius Phil Simms will be calling the game and he sucks eggs.
At least we get to skip Joe Buck this time.
Buck is dull and bad but I’ll take him and the wax figure of Aikman over Nantz and Simms.
I agree with this. Boring and bleh is better than Aweful.
Forget all the hype. It’s 2 really good teams playing really well right now.
Basically I’ll just ignore
most ofESPN for the nexttwo52 weeks. I watch their live college football and the occasional NASCAR race. Some college basketball if I’m into it, but this winter it seems I’d rather read something. It’s been a long time since I watched any of their talking heads shows.I basically watch PTI and some ESPN news and that’s about it.
Game one of the 1970 WS has been on espnclassic twice in the past two days. that is something to watch
You got cable or satellite, Ed? I thought you were rabbit ears only. As to ESPN Classic, that’s a channel I never think of tuning in. On DirecTV it’s not grouped with any of the other sports channels I watch, so I never think to check what they might be showing.
regular cable that does not include Comcast-ca.
the classic has some good stuff. lots of 30-30 and boxing.
I don’t know anything about boxing, but pre 1980 boxing lore is cool
I used to love boxing…my dad was really into it and we’d go to fights at Arco. The last 10+ years though I’ve hardly watched any of it and the UFC stuff just isn’t for me.
This just in…the Raiders have decided to skip the 2013 season…Reggie McKenzie blames the salary cap situation and Dennis Allen says the team will use the time off to get better and try harder while getting better because they tried harder.
The Raiders are going to be better in 2013, and not just because it would be nigh impossible to be worse.
I actually think they’ll be worse…I see 2-14 coming. I think McKenzie is kind of a moron and Allen actually says shit like I just posted..at least our new OC has been fired 3 times before as an OC though.
Thank goodness for the A’s and the Jayhawks…the Raiders are a mess.
You were praising both of them before the season starts.
A 4-12 season will change a mind…I’ve never been all that high on McKenzie for the most part…I basically hoped for the best on Allen as I didn’t know much about him.
Oh and to the Atlanta Falcons…you’re a bunch of choking dogs…but the better team won which is good.
I don’t care for the Ravens but I do like Flacco he reminds me of Plunkett…good deep ball, a bit streaky, at times awful but he often makes a big play when his team needs it.
god, i hate flacco. we even have a song about him.
At my party we were ripping Ray Lewis mostly…it was half the fun of the game as the AFC game was a little boring if you didn’t have a rooting interest.
i should have taught you the song. :P
With my singing voice I’d most likely ruin it.
that’s the whole point.
If you want awful singing I’m your man.
perfection!
Pssh, I can outsuck your musically any day of the week. Guaranteed.
So, go Ravens.
(yes, I know how my favorite team did this season. I don’t care.)
i feel sick. (love you!)
love you too!
<3 4eva ;)
It’s ok. Even if the 49ers lose, at least they’re not owned by Jerry Jones! ;)
Jerry Jones seems to think it was him and not Jimmy Johnson who built that great team….that being said the new stadium is amazing and he deserves a ton of credit for it.
I have no idea what this means…Stephen Root is a good actor though.
He does think that… and he’s seriously warped.
this
My way too early Super Bowl prediction…
Ravens 27 49ers 24
The Ravens just feel like magic to me right now.
49ers 31, Baltimore 20
But I may be biased.
49ers 55, Baltimore 10.
Thanks, and go As.
49s 82, Baltimore 1
I’ll take the Jaguars plus the points over the Red Wings.
I love you.
I
0-ferAkers gonna miss an xp?dude I am so FKing done with him. I love him for last season and for the 63 yarder, but you just cannot miss that many kicks.
I really, really wish that they would have signed Kai Forbath this year before Washington got him.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s one area I hope they can address in the draft, but I don’t know if there are any good kickers available.
There are almost always really good kickers who go UDFA.
It really confuses me how little value is placed on kickers, when they are always asked to win/lose games on the final play so often.
Thanks, and go As.
I guess they’d rather use picks on guys who play more often, knowing the kickers will always be there.
The other areas I’d like to see addressed are WR, DL, and LB. Not that the DL or LB’s or bad, I just think they need more depth.
They drafted pretty badly this year.
they need a stud DE and a starting caliber WR and a CB
I think that remains to be seen. LMJ is really good, and AJ Jenkins is an unknown, mostly because they didn’t use him.
I think Safety is the #1 need, because Goldson is going to be allowed to walk.
an heir apparent for Justin Smith is also needed, but it can be a project player.
Thanks, and go As.
When your first two draft picks are inactive for 26 of 32 games, you didn’t draft well.
I like LMJ. He was pretty redundant until Hunter blew out his Achilles, but I do think that he is going to be useful in the pistol moving forward.
Or your team is deep enough that you can afford to not play guys until they’re ready.
Baalke and Harbaugh earned themselves a LOT of leeway after they demolished the 2011 draft.
Thanks, and go As.
They played Chad Hall instead of Jenkins today.
Hes a bust.
I agree that they earned leeway, but at the same time, when you reach it has to pan out.
Everybody has a bad draft from time to time. Even if Jenkins goes Tai Streets, there’s still a chance that Looney and Slowey can contribute, which would make this a solid draft.
I would be thrilled if he had Tai Streets production. I don’t think he reaches that bar
I thought that was strange as well. Jenkins could just be a hell of a lot farther off than they thought.
Thanks, and go As.
and for the record I wanted them to take Peter Konz instead.
Thanks, and go As.
I was hoping for Coby Fleener or Stephen Hill.
I think the Fleener thing was too hyped up because Stanford. That said, I do think they will look to replace Walker this offseason, and it might actually be a Stanford TE this time. Toilolo
Thanks, and go As.
Is Walker a FA?
yes walker is a FA and he cant catch.
I wanted him or Janoris Jenkins or Stephen Hill
When I see LMJ and Keap running the read option, I think: “The future is happy”
They drafted well the year before. I still hope Jenkins can pan out. Don’t they have a ton of picks this year? Hopefully they can find good value.
yeah they have a panthers 3rd too iirc.
Looks like they currently have 14 picks, but only 6 of those are in the first 4 rounds.
They mock Barkley as our 30th over all pick? WTF?
Yeah, I can’t imagine them using that pick on a QB.
BR is a joke.
Thanks, and go As.
true story
And that’s before whatever picks they get for Alex.
They should be trading up all draft
Depends on the specific players. The Pat’s did good business for years trading up into future drafts.
I agree. They should be more than willing to trade picks in this years draft for future picks that are higher in round.
Where is the most dangerous place for you to be?
To be between Ray Lewis and a camera.
That sums up why I’ll most likely find myself rooting for SF.
It is a bit hard to take that Lewis might go out winning the Super Bowl in his last game…and even if the 49ers score 50 points but the Ravens win by scoring 51 the media will give Lewis credit for his “leadership”. I even heard one of the media say Lewis would make sure the coaches worked extra hard over the two weeks because he’d lead the coaches to do so.
Dead on there, Mr. Doolittle…I sure hope most folks realize that Ray Lewis is not a good guy.
this.
How many people has he killed now?
I love that Sean gets it, love that we have perceptive, smart people on our team.
I swear, I wish Ray Lewis would slip up in front of the camera one time and praise the Lord for allowing him to get away with killing those 2 people, just by accident I wish he’d spit that out.
I am for the 49ers in the big game, I just cannot abide this histrionic asshole that makes Tim Tebow look subtly religious. Also I want Mike V to feel good so I hope SF wins despite all the crap we will have to endure about San Francisco being the center of the sports universe.
I just wish Coco had not dropped that ONE FK’ing BALL and we had got to play those cocksuFKers in the WS and just shit on them, total humiliation and annihilation.
This is great.
Thats a Chuck Schumer joke
I’ve heard that version…it’s one of those jokes you can use for a lot of guys.
For the Super Bowl party we might try something different and roast a whole pig…I’ve never done it before.
In a pit covered with ti leaves, I hope.
A Hawaiian Luau in Arkansas!…..Aloha Pig Soooey!….GO RAZORBACKS
He’s hoping Beyonce has a wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl halftime show.
hmm…I meant to write here’s hoping but I’m a he so it still works as he’s hoping.
She put my friend’s video game firm out of business in a fit of diva-histrionics, so fk her.
FK her….well, a couple of years ago that would have been fine by me.
They’re suing her for $100 million, right? That’s going to be a fun trial.
Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease
thank you all for not being prating jerks about my team losing in my hearing (reading). i appreciate that beyond words. you are sweet people, and i love you for it. i am excited for baseball now, and i look forward to many months of happiness with you! xoxoxoxo
If it’s any consolation, and I know it’s not — I’m glad we don’t have to play you guys a second time this year.
Thanks, and go As.
it is not. but i truly like your team and love you all who are lifelong fans. it’s the bandwagon drums beating that make me feel violent.
and it is nice to come here, to a place where i know so many people truly hate my team the most of all teams, and still find love and compassion. <3
i am rooting for you in the SB, for sure.
I’m jealous of the Patriots but I’ve never hated them…they’ve had a hell of a run and Tom Brady is one of the all time great quarterbacks.
we’ve had a great run. and i’m the only pats fan EVER who is not a fan of tom brady (sunshine).
I really like Brady a lot…it’s been a real pleasure watching both him and Payton Manning…I just hope that at least once in my lifetime my Raiders get a quarterback 75% as good as those two.
i hear that. vampires aren’t my thing.
Wait…Brady and Manning are vampires?…hmm…so next time the Raiders play Denver we need to bring wooden stakes I guess…I sure hope the salary cap will allow Reggie McKenzie to get those.
i don’t know about manning. but we do have a song about him, too.
Does the song go real well until the end and then come up short?
it sounds like lady gagas song.
Hmm…I’m not overly familiar with her work.
Shocking.
pfft….I’m up to date on most of the other female singers of this era due to the woman I’m related to by marriage…she’s just not into Gaga.
You married a good woman, my friend.
Well, I agree…and listening to a lot of Katy Perry is the price I pay for all the good stuff.
I suppose I could deal with that.
I don’t like Brady, but only because he went to Serra.
I still associate New England with the Steve Grogan Patriots, with the Minuteman squatting to take a dump as the helmet logo. Also the snowplow dude clearing the way for the placekicker. The Patriots don’t really register as anybody I hate “the most of all teams” anywhere near the way the Red Sox do. Then again, I don’t have any particular passion about the NFL, I just watch two or three random games a week from the end of baseball season through January to pass some time.
Ah, Steve Grogan…he was what announcers liked to call back then, a river boat gambler…aka he threw a lot of picks…he was fun to watch though…the Patriots were straight dogs for decades.
Also from that era, as I was watching this live I tend to associate this with the Patriots as well.

what happened with the kick?
Missed FG; game goes to OT; Dolphins win.
cosell was so cosell right there, “Dead. On. Arrival.”
It was his last great moment. After that it was “that little monkey” and being drunk on the air for the ALCS in Kansas City.
wow, i never heard about that until now. still…
i don’t defend my pats-love, but maybe i do. it’s the only team i still have in common with my dads. and that means the world to me.
Never apologize for who you love. Unless it’s the Angels, then we need to talk.
thank you. <3 you have all made me feel better tonight, even if there is hate in your hearts. <3
I don’t hate the Pats, and I could never hate you.
I don’t know how much of the upcoming baseball season I’ll get to watch but I am excited to see how the A’s do this year…I like how things are trending with the A’s.
I have to say a big part of me wants to say fuck it and take my dad to this Super Bowl…New Orleans isn’t far away but it would be a lot of walking and while the new hip is working well for him it might too much for him to do.
do it. there are those motorized chairs!!! we rented one for my dad, and he loved it.
I think I’ll talk to him about it tomorrow…I know next year’s Super Bowl is in New Jersey and that doesn’t sound like much fun in February…going to the Super Bowl together is something we’ve always wanted to do.
seriously, if you can do it, do it. there is no time like the present. i love your relationship with your dad!
Well, one things for sure…we aren’t going to wait to go until the Raiders are in it again…I mean it could be decades before Hell freezes over and that happens.
<3
Definitely do it. Growing up, my dad was into trying to find low-priced tickets from scalpers right before the game. We ended up getting into Super Bowl XVII, but shut out of Super Bowl XXI. We also went to a Rose Bowl, one game each for the ’88 and ’89 World Series, and a number of Raiders games when they were in LA. These have been some of the greatest memories I have had with my dad growing up. I’m looking forward to doing some three-generation games now.
And remember kids…if you’re going to murder someone make sure you have Ray Lewis’ girlfriend around to burn your clothes.
Allegedly…
ONLY IF YOUR SUIT IS WHITE.
All I know is my hair was perfect…
If you are going to have Ray Lewis murder someone, have it be your fake girlfriend.
This just in…Reggie McKenzie just got off the phone with Notre Dame lineback Manti Te’o’s girfriend and she talked him into drafting the linebacker. Dennis Allen said the kid was a good player because he played at being good which made him a good player.
All that weirdness aside, he’d still help the Raiders. I don’t think he’s #3 overall now, but if he slides to the 2nd round he’s got to be their pick.
Thanks, and go As.
I can’t say I’ve seen enough of him to have a strong opinion about his talent…the Raiders need help more at CB and DL so that’s where I’d go but if you can get him for good value I’d be fine with it.
Last few mock drafts I bothered to look at had Star Loutouleleleleleleeieieiei going to them.
Thanks, and go As.
I start looking at those around March or so…I love to trade down but I know a lot of fans want to do that but it’s harder to get a haul anymore especially in a seemingly weak draft.
Raiders gotta trade down from #3 and stockpile picks in bunches if they can. So many holes to fill.
My thoughts as well…but like I posted it’s harder to do these days.
Yeah, it’s too bad there aren’t like 4 or 5 monsters in the draft like last year with Luck/RG3/Richardson/Kalil/Claiborne, cause I think it would be really tough for them to trade down this year
Thanks, and go As.
Yep…the Raiders like to truly suck in years where there aren’t any great quarterbacks in the draft.
Alex Smith and the 49ers 1st rounder for the Raiders 1st rounder. Seems fair to me!
Uh…no thanks.
This… do what the Rams did
Well the thing is, if you’re bad enough to get the #3 pick, chances are 1 guy isn’t going to fix you.
There aren’t any RGIII’s or Lucks to make that trade for…no one is giving up much for Matt Barkley or Gino Smith.
Once the Super Bowl is over, I’ll have to start learning about whose available in the draft. Seems like the Raiders should just take the BPA.
They have real need at CB…they might have the worst CB’s in football. I’d also kill for a veteran WR but I’m not holding my breath on that one.
It’s so hard to find veteran WR’s in the draft. If you can’t get CB’s, look at DE’s and OLB’s and try to improve your pass rush.
It’s true…getting a vet WR in the draft isn’t easy. They’ll find a CB I imagine. When it comes to using free agency for a WR I’m sure that darn salary cap will stop King Reggie from getting his man…that cap is such a meanie!
And it’s not fair how no one but him has to deal with it.
I agree with that.
I’ll give him this, that story was so weird, it burned itself out quickly
It was a strange deal…I’ve only followed it close enough to understand the jokes.
This just in…Bridget the Midget called…after her short and violent marriage to Robert Wuhl ended in November she’s found true love in the arms of Alex Trebek…they plan to elope sometime later this month.
What is “on the rebound,” Alex?
I would just like to say that I won the football prognostication for 2013 with this.
I infer from your subsequent comments in the thread that you were more “down on Smith” than “up on Kaepernick”.
I was really excited when we drafted him and I didn’t want to spend money on Smith becauase I thought Kaep would be ready.
My Kaepernick/Tebow comment was definitely true in 2010; those two had similar skill sets but Tebow was in the SEC while Kaepernick was in oblivion in Reno. Given the rapid changes in the NFL game, e.g. RGIII, it suggests there may still be hope for Tebow if he were paired with the right coaching staff.
kaeperinck has always had a rocket for an arm though even if it took to long to load and he is faster than tebow.
HE USED TO PLAY BASEBALL /joebuck
Thanks, and go As.
I actually wonder if Harbaugh could do something with him. Deal Smith for, say, a 3rd rd. pick? Get Tebow for maybe a 6th rd? I hate Tebow, but I wonder…
Depends on whether he can catch or not. He’s big enough and fast enough to be a TE, but Kaepernick is better at the Tebow offense than Tebow is, AND he can throw.
Thanks, and go As.
I wonder if Tebow can be taught to throw, though.
Man it’s amazing how wrong PT was in that subthread about Kaepernick.
Thanks, and go As.
yup yup
I’m so pissed that we’re stuck with Kaepernick instead of Weeden.
this.
I’m dredging this up from an old ** DLD post, but I would also say that going from WAC-off Player of the Week to Super Bowl quarterback in 4 years is pretty damned impressive.
I’ll go on record and freely admit that I had no idea that Kaepernick would be half this good….I’ll go with a phrase used by the worst sportswriter I’ve ever read, Bruce Jenkins, and say I was dead wrong in public on that one.
Neither did I. I always figured believe in Harbaugh as the QB Whisperer, but jeeze.
Also was today the final bit of vindication for all the people who questioned making the switch by saying “IF they don’t win the NFC Championship it’s a mistake”
Thanks, and go As.
I hope Benito is feeling better soon, Lady Jesa.
Ciao you dead sexy bastards.
Good night, buddy.
I just saw top chef seattle restaurant wars.
I cannot believe I am in the minority because I dislike padma
I guess I’d ask whether you watch a lot of these competition-based reality shows. Because despite how it may seem, it’s not easy to play that host role, framing challenges for viewers and contestants at same time, keeping everyone else’s banter feeling spontaneous, handling the parts you do every week like vote-offs in a non-canned way. Many of these hosts are awful at this; I think Padma is pretty good. She’s less good as a judge of the food, but I figure her vote probably doesn’t count as much as the other judges anyway.
Padma is annoying as hell during the show, but she’s always pretty amusing during the outtakes they show in the reunion.
Grant on instant replay
Grant is dumb, sure, but this is a reasoned argument.
I wanted to comment, but don’t feel like seeing if my sbn account survived the two redesigns. so I will comment here, (sorry grant)
I think a good addition to this kind of change, is screens in the dugout that go live when there is a review, so the managers can watch the video at the same time in the same views
I like union jobs.
The idea of a 5th umpire is good, but he should be part of the regular rotation. This way, the whole crew gets to a turn at reviewing calls, which should prevent resentment from being a factor. My guess is that the umps would love a chance to work from a nice air conditioned booth every 5th game, especially on a road trip through Texas, St Louis, and Kansas City during July.
Oh yeah, also, that Grant guy is a talentless hack.
I agree
Re dugout screens: while the play is under review, just let the stadium video operator show the replay on the Megatron board so the fans can see it too. Football officials can survive that scrutiny and MLB umpires ought to be able to live with it.
do they do it in football?
I have only been to a raider game, so there is no mega in the tron to allow the fans to follow along
During NFL reviews, the in-house fans watch the same replays as the referee is seeing “under the hood”. I don’t think either the NFL or NCAA has ever had the blanket ban on showing “controversial” plays which the MLB umpires have been able to maintain.
The Niners making the SB is the first time my team has made a championship. I’ve had teams I root for win but only in sports I’m only minor fans: Australian football, Rugby league, Duke basketball, Stanford football.
Now is the first time the Niners, A’s, or Warriors are playing the big game. Color me excited.
It’s the first time in my fully-conscious-of-what-it-means life. 1994 was too early.
I became a 49ers fan in the 80’s, so I didn’t fully appreciate what this means until now. Back then, making the Super Bowl felt like a birthright, and not making it just pissed me off.
I was a 49ers fan in the 70s when I was only old enough to be conscious that they sucked (because they always lost and/or made Daddy cuss a lot), but not anywhere near being cognizant of why/how they sucked. So it was a lot of fun to see them getting great while I was growing up and paying closer attention… and therefore extra depressing to watch them go back toward awful. And now I’m all jaded & old & mistrustful that this new fun can last a decade or more again. {sigh}
It’s the new and improved NFL. Sustained excellence is very difficult now. Just enjoy this year and worry about the rest later.
**yone?
Cuban SS defecting…
Love the numbers but his ‘motivational’ issues may be a red flag.
To be fair I have no idea what the personal politics are like in Cuban baseball.
We do however have a great window into what his general makeup is like in one Yoenis Cespedes.
Considering we have been a big player in recent Cuban FA negotiations this is pretty durned exciting!
I’d guess the motivational issues were more related to wanting out of Cuba. But that’s just a guess. Certainly a yellow flag at the very least and one that would require a good response to when asked about.
I think that playing for a Major League team (and making Major League money) would clear those issues right up.
Me too. Given our SS situation and those numbers, I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at him.
I’m thinking/ hoping the ‘year off’ will give some teams pause, get er’ done Billy.
Corrected for the improper use on FK of the first and 14th letters on the alphabet together in caps. :)
Heh, I had some initial fear as to where that link indeed took one as well.
heh. I wish you people would be my roving editors (ED-itors, if you will)
So an update:
Went to MOMA with PhD girl. She is well cultured and smart, but not particularly more so that I.
Crisis adverted.
Why would that be a crisis? The great thing about people who are smarter or more cultured is that you can learn from them.
I like people to be cultured in different things than I am to maintain balance, but generally on the same level.
Not me. More knowledgeable, less knowledgeable, people are people. As long as they’re not obnoxious or insufferable, I’m happy to get to know them.
yuppers
smart chicks rule
but being in a esoteric PhD program doesn’t guarantee that someone is blow-you-away smart, of course.
I agree.
Kyli:
Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Hell… *I* would do him…
OK no I wouldn’t. But still.
Thanks, and go As.
He does appear to have bewbs.
I wish mine were like that
Thanks, and go As.
Who can resist a hot blond?
that dude isn’t even hot.
Wrong.
hes got a weird forehead ridge
And a fourteen pack.
Face>>>body
I’m just going to say that I don’t care for all this football nonsense. I am sorry that Benito is sick. I hope he gets better soon.
