On my way to cook, eat, and clean up after dinner before resuming work and maybe watching a baseball game out of the corner of my eye. Thought those of you who also aren’t at the game might like a new game thread! And I didn’t see one in the drafts.
I have nothing substantial to say, so feel free to delete this thread if there was already one in the works, which will undoubtedly be better.
Pitching matchup: Someone not named Bartolo Colon vs. Someone From the Visiting Team
Lineups: Nine other guys from each team.
oops I meant Happy Holiday!

Crossed over with the new post, but there’s visual evidence of Hamilton accepting something in the last game post.
Sad that I can’t be out there with all you Hamilton-appreciating FKers.
Fosse: You wear glasses, but you are a great player.
Poppy!
Jennifer!
DMOAS!
Whore.
Guilt as charged.
Wait, why are the Angels having Peter Bourjos lead off?
Looks like Bourjos has actually got off to a good start.
Well, that’s fitting.
$100,000, I hope.
Meh. It was entirely possible that they would have been able to sneak him through waivers and keep him. The 100k doesn’t bother me at all since that potential is worth it.
I just meant for the sake of symmetry.
aesthetically it would be nice.
4 out of 15 AL teams this season and April isn’t over.
Why is Brian Sabean in the Diamond Club? (I know that’s not really him)
that should be a e not a base hit
Do any fielding metrics take into account that the SS was positioned behind 2B when he missed that one?
The fielding bible might. UZR would not. UZR would say that positioning is a skill.
Who’s skill though? Most positioning is done by the coaching staff.
I am aware of that. That is the position of the metric whether you like it or not.
Are they removing it from the player or adding as a bonus? If the latter, it kind of reduces the accuracy of the measure.
It was hit hard and the pitcher blocked the view of the fielder. That’s a hit.
Hahaha that pitch Cespedes hit yesterday.
Dammit. I was certain that ball was going to end up in the corner for an ITP homer.
Straily’s fastball is complete shit.
That ball went to a place I didn’t know existed.
better
So Donaldson’s already got a 1.2 WAR.
I know what WAR is good for, explaining why Josh Donaldson is better than you think.
Good God, y’all!
First time I saw him in person, he was already an All-Star.
Does that mean my eyes are right or wrong?
I like interference.
Where was that call in the 2003 ALDS?
AAAAAAAAHH!!! The memories, they burns us!
they Byrnes, they Byrnes.
Yeah, that one does, too…
Tejada bailed on the play and assumed.
the thing that bugs me is that you have to continue to certain death in order to get the call. That should not be. A runner that makes a rational decision not to advance when interfered with would not be penalized for not assuming the umpire saw the interference
But he shouldn’t stop to argue with the umpire.
Not sure what you mean. If a player is interfered with and returns to the safest base, he’ll get the additional base as a result of interference. If he continues to go forward and it wasn’t obvious that he’d be out had he not been interfered with, he’d get the base. The key is simply not to stop in the middle of the base path and stand there. They don’t necessarily want to stop play since it’s possible the defense could fk things up even more and you’ve deprived the offense of that addition.
isn’t it that if you go back you don’t get the next base?
No.
Don’t feel like looking it up, but roughly speaking the rule is that you get the next base automatically and if you try to advance farther than that it is at your own risk with the umps having to use judgment to decide what would have happened w/o the obstruction.
With Tejada, the play happened basically right at third, and they did call obstruction, but ruled that it happened before he got to third. So the base he got automatically was third, and if he had just fucking kept running they would have given him home as well, because on a close play they’re going to give the runner the benefit of the doubt. The question of “what would have happened without the obstruction” on a play where the runner quits on the play raises deep philosophical questions that umpires are probably not really equipped to answer.
Technically, it was also obstruction on Byrnes’ play at the plate, as Varitek was blocking the plate before the ball arrived, but they never call that on the catcher.
Thus
Q: Why do the rules insist that the runner continue his effort to get that call?
A: To teach you not to quit running in the middle of the play you fucking idiots.
I want this engraved on Tejada’s tombstone.
I love the ump’s hand-on-chin, pensive “Yes, Mike, I’m taking every word you say completely seriously” look.
Ha. I was laughing at that too. Trying really hard to not roll his eyes.
I also love how he made the call immediately, even before the play had ended.
That’s normal. They signal that they saw it.
I just like seeing an umpire do his job right.
And oh shit, Theth just hurt himthelf.
I’m pretty sure they did it for Tejada, but even if he didn’t, it wouldn’t have changed the outcome.
Hanson is getting ridiculously lucky.
Mhmm…
I think 3 outstanding plays of the 6 outs is part of the weak contact he gets from late movement.
knows how to pitch, veteran savvy, grinds it out, etc
LOL Yankees
He’s an idea, Jed. Next time Trout grounds one to you, don’t be so casual about it.
In fact, maybe you should stop being so casual for ANYBODY.
Fuck is Theth hurt?
fuck you vince, just say he caught it
I think even Erik Hiljus’s fastball had more movement.
Wow, I have not as yet seen a Strailly pitch today, but that’s a hella cold statement.
His breaking pitches look great. But you hold your breath on every fastball he throws.
F, C’mon Blue BS.
Hey Ray, the word is pronounced HITE.
T. T. T. T. T
Dude doesn’t even know how to pronounce buffet, after decades in sports media.
….
Sigh
Let’s do this!
Brandon McCarthy is pitching in
San FranciscoArizona on Wednesday.AZ?
Fixed.
That’ll be a neat trick, since the teams will be in Phoenix.
That’s what I get for arguing the merit of the European home/away team ordering.
Y O J O
Eric Chavez hit one of the three HRs off “what’s the timmer with mattie” in the 4th inning
In Arizona.
A BREAK! IT GLOWS!
Finally!
EXPLOIT IT!
LOL Kendrick
A’s might lose this game, but the Angels will still have Hanson, who is awful.
Home-team scoring (that’s no hit).
On this one, I agree. Total E.
A) vince has not told me that pitch was called a strike, I assume it was
B) why can’t lefties get a reasonable zone?
Aren’t you still waiting to hear if Cespedes caught that ball an inning or so ago?
Nice battle by Schlong at least, looking much more patient at the plate, now he just has to stop sucking is all.
Straily is not getting the border stuff like Hanson is.
April 29 1992
There was a riot on the streets
Tell me where were you?
watching on tv
watching tv without Ed.
I strategically timed my move back from LA to be after the earthquake and before the riots.
About a mile away from where I am now.
About 2,800 miles away from where I am now.
In our shitty apartment in Mountain View. Neighbors were either stomping overhead, or dumping their ashtrays over their balcony railing (directly onto my patio). Mr. Poppy was not home. And Poppy Jr. was screaming his fucking head off or hurling things around for no reason.
(I’m just guessing, because that describes just about all of 1992 in my world.)
On my first visit to the US, attending a 3 month program on quantum phase transitions at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at UCSB because my PhD supervisor was an invitee. Commuting to LA on the weekends on a Greyhound bus that was 9 hours out of Pelican Bay to hang with my sons’ mother’s ex (post-ptbnl) who was studying at the recently re-named University of Scared Caucasians.
in the riot. …kinda. LBC, i came home from class, turned on the TV, the verdict came out. first it was pictures of college-aged people turning over a parking guard hut near the courthouse and pretty soon it was a riot. i spent the evening/night in my apartment with my roommate, me on acid, him never, listening to KXLU play revolution will not be TV’zed over and over, watching the frostee freeze down the block burn a little, watching really thick smoke from what we were hearing was the DMV totally on fire, chatting across our back balconies to neighbor students in other apartments who we never really talked to again. night 2, me and roommate spent the night at our friends’/future roommates, got drunk, had a slam pit in the living room.
but i really really really was in throng of the much-less-remembered huntington beach / OP pro riot of auguts 31, 1986. mostly, we just wanted to get to our bikes to get out of there. and it was my birthday.
Must have been somewhere in the woods, although IIRC by that time the bombings went down somewhat
highly recommend LA 92 on netflix.
It seems like both pitchers are throwing 75% breaking pitches now.
Um Ray. Hernandez bunt was a hit, not a Sac.
The all-too-common sacrifice bunt with two out.
smallest ball
[/canseco]
DP pls.
It’s comforting to know that the law of averages dictates that someday, somehow, the A’s pitchers will be able to toss one single shutdown inning after they score. Someday.
wow
Ugh…
Why was the infield playing half way with a guy with shitty legs who could get hit into a DP?
Crappy break, great pitch by Strailly. I can’t argue playing double-play depth there.
Double play depth would have been an out.
This is starting to suck.
And now it completely sucks.
Do not despair, remember the slegnA bullpen.
Get the out.
Okay despair is not out of the question…
Prophetic
Well looks like Parker will be staying in the rotation.
Well, this game sucks a bag of dicks so far.
Seems we could be back on track for Colon needing to break another losing streak soon.
Someone else will have to do the honors that day. I’ll be in Austin for a few days this weekend.
You could put the thread up now.
I’d hate to assume.
Nah, I’m going tomorrow. We’re getting a W, damnit.
The runs suck, but I do like the K/B ratio Dan rolled out today, slegnA lineup is a sonofabitch, or at least should be, and sadly today it is.
You guys are correct, that was a BP FB tonight unfortunately.
couple of HRs, but some bad breaks. meh
We need an explanation from the league office for that strike three call to Coco Crisp.
Bull poopy
Ugh
I think Curt needs to hold a clinic.
Kerwin Danley is hereby invited to get the fuck off the field and get a job.
Better late than ne.. No, fuck you fuck you fuck you.
http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/justice-oconnor-maybe-bush-v-gore-was-mistake?ref=fpb
C’mon Jed, make good.
Moss remembered it was tommy hanson pitching
Ugh – Ziggy just gave up two runs to the gnats, mainly by walking people like Gregor Blanco and Brandon Crawford.
WOO!
MOSSOME
Can’t get one single shutdown inning, ever. Where’s the focus?
Yeah, I’m thinking it’s time for a moratorium on the shutdown inning jokes until the pitching fortunes turn.
I second this.
I wasn’t joking.
Of course, but we’re all always joking about doing the shutdown inning drinking game, the way these guys obsess about getting one.
They should obsess. It’s one of the central determining factors of a good team vs. a not good team: the ability to keep the other side off the board after you score.
I thought all the runs counted the same regardless of when they scored. No?
Not when you continually demoralize your offense as they claw to get back in games, only to be dug an instantly deeper hole by your pitchers’ inability to get you back to the dugout with the score the same.
In the end, yes. But if you continually give up runs right after you’ve scored, it’s just worse.
For the most part I agree, but they certainly matter in a situation like this as innings are obviously finite in non tie game scenarios.
FYI, a quick count looks to me that since the A’s returned home, they’ve allowed the other team to score in 7 of the 9 chances that came up, not counting the current 9th inning tonight yet.
Seems to me there is a bigger problem there.
It’s gone badly out of control, Ray and Vince especially are enjoying the phrase way too much, probably because it trolls the rationalists. And Korach is going along, just like he did with the “BoMel” nonsense, which appears to have stuck, goddamn it.
I’ve stopped listening because it got so annoying…
We need our own Green Monster.
In right field. That’s put Reddick’s arm to use throwing runners out at first.
Bullpen Mojo.
Why did he swing at ball 4…
Reddick just can’t catch a break. [sadface]
he’d bobble it anyway
Never fear, Rosales will lead us to the next half inning post haste.
Oh boy, Rosie the Hackerer.
Gee, I guess white men can jump.
Hrm, mojo?
Too soon to tell.
Gotta give it to the folks at the game, pretty loud!
Wow, Donaldson is awesome.
IN THIS!
Gawddamn it’s loud!
Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit
Hah
Maybe he’s just regressing to Awesomeness?
Pinch-hit Freiman for Schlong.
Pitch hit First Half 2012 Schlong for First Half 2013 Schlong.
Or CY.
Scarlett Member Mojo, you’re due son, you’re due.
I’d think about a double steal here.
WOOOO!
Let’s go Goofy!
Shoot, I can’t believe we have to use Rosales here.
That was kind of a mismatch, but on the plus side we’re back to the top of the order for the 9th.
Yeah, but at least we got him out of the way for the 9th.
Can we get him out of the roster next?
I’ll give Green a go, how long can we keep him in AAA?
He is hitting pretty well right now, but no word on if the defense has improved.
I’m fine with giving him a chance to work with Gags in the majors.
This offense battles like a MFK’er, gotta give them some credit.
Now let’s get a few more hits and win it.
I concur!
We REALLY need that shutdown inning now.
Jesus Christ the media is going so ape over this Jason Collins thing you’d think he showed up to a game dressed as one of the Village People.
Scout is a genius: “Chris Resop may prefer to go after Mike Trout, whose OPS is .727 this season, with the four-seam fastball rather than facing Peter Bourjos, whose OPS is .828.” After Trout came to the plate.
This is getting stupid already. I mean, ONE time? ONCE? EVER?
Congratulations bullpen, you MADE A FUCKING PITCH.
Now let’s get this MFKing game to the house and totally demoralize these guys.
Shut it down Doo!
OK, I’m all right with the HRs, but how many lucky, flipped-off-the-end-of-the-bat hits can that guy get.
Well, he was the best player in baseball for many a year.
And they yelled over rated at him at the start of the game. Now he has to prove them wrong.
And they were nice (in a mocking way, I guess) to Hamilton. We should just be nice to the other team and we always win!
I hope that long (unscoring) half-inning allowed Frieri a good chance to get nice and tight.
FUCK YES!!!
Nice start!
TIE AND PIE MOJO!!!!!
Whoa, that was risky.
I would’ve jumped through my TV to kill Coco if he had been thrown out. Having said that, nice play.
This is riveting.
I believe Yo.
Drop a bunt down the 3B line, and we’re tied.
Does Cespy know how to bunt? Can’t really remember.
Never mind.
Or blast one off the wall.
Cespedes comes through again, but he’d better stop admiring things that don’t leave the yard.
He’d be at second if he didn’t gawk, but FUCK YESPEDES!
Nice job, Manny. FUCKING RUN EVERY FUCKING TIME YOU HIT THAT FUCKING THING.
Apparently the only one who can diminish the awesomeness of Cespedes is Cespedes himself.
SO MANY EMOTIONS
Gotta run, not pose. But stellar AB vs. a tough pitcher for Yo.
The players should fine him in Kangaroo Court, then suspend the sentence for tying up the game.
Hold the line boys, next stop, PIE!
Donaldson, Norris, (Nash) and Young.
Helplessly hoping…
49 good pies
Deja vu.
Tin closers and JD’s coming…
Hold the line, PIE isn’t always on time.
Why take out Doolittle?
No idea…
K
C’mon Blue!
For fucks sake…
I hate umpires…
I just figured out that Brendan Harris and Brendan Ryan are not the same person. Next step will be to remember which one is which.
Heh
Ugh, that hurt, he looked bad on that play too….
Wow. So close to a home run, so close to a catch.
YES!!!!!!!
ahahahaha
What’s the story behind Williams’ pink glove?
I let out a WHOOP…how did that not go out?!
I can’t believe Trout missed that.
Did it hit that sign? Maybe!
would HAVE
Jeebus.
WOULDA
buddha.
That’s a fking HR
Or maybe not. Weird.
Yeah, I don’t think it was
Holy shit, Ray might be right.
I’m scared.
Did it hit the O.co sign? I think so… that’s why Trout looked so bad in his leap timing, no?
What’s the delay?
Can you protest this?
Good question, Melvin should lodge a protest now to maintain that option.
Would’ve been over the wall if that stupid sign wasn’t there.
But someone could have won $10,000!
Rosy should just sprint all the way back to Sacramento.
Ugh, fucking Rosie…
Tough call but gotta move on and get 3 outs right here, focus, focus focus.
Rosie is FKing useless at the plate. At lease make Williams work for the out.
Seriously. Knew the inning was over as soon as he walked up
did that NOT hit the red O sign?
Failure to have any other replays than the behind-the-plate one led to that staying a triple.
How the fuck are we in this game.
Angel bullpen.
Looked out to me, and isn’t that really what matters?
In this case, yes.
OK, the O.co sign is too far behind the wall for the deflection to have happened. C’mon Grant, close these shitbirds down.
Yeah, pretty clear now that it didn’t come into play.
If that didn’t hit something over the fence, Trout sure made it looked like it did.
F
Uh oh, Bourjous hammy
Bourjos is sprinter fast.
Ouch, that looks like it hurt, poor dude.
Walk Pujols?
Sneaky strike on 3-0. He’ll never see it coming!
SIDDOWN, BITCH
Please tell me they’re going to Blevins
I’m okay with him pitching to Hamilton as long as he gets him out.
I’m good with it.
Apparently, so am I.
Anyone see that tonight was Josh Hamilton Appreciation Night at the Coliseum?
Read the thread, llama.
Haven’t got the time, stargazer.
Pie attempt #3
Top of the order ftw.
Whew.
Please score this inning. I canna take much more of this.
So…sleepy…
Anyone see that the A’s are playing the Angels tonight?
It was nice of them to give you a full nine inning game to watch.
I like this Hamilton contract right now. Not saying he never turns this around, but it’s pretty fun.
Also, good morning. From nutritious standpoint, it would be proper to start it with a pie
Breakfast of (division) champions.
A cabbage pie

Burek!
Made that for Easter from this
http://www.npr.org/2013/03/28/175478107/tuscan-pie-a-sweet-springtime-take-on-spinach
Ah, Shuck
Apparently someone is named JB Shuck
AH Shuck would have been better.
Back to Coco, Smith, Lowrie.
Extra innings pie pls.
Lets just end this now
You know guys, base hits work too.
It is amazing that Jerome Williams still is in the league.
It’s the power of the pink mitt.
Make up for last AB lowrie?
That’ll do Jed. That’ll do.
Lowrie is not quite as good with the glove as I had hoped.
Trout has no been the outfield superman that he was last year.
Was the Sac Bunt attempt ok there? I can’t decide if I’m mad about the call, or just the “execution”
In a vacuum it is at least defensible.
We only need one run there. I’m okay with it there. Just really fking shitty execution.
bunting with 1st, 2nd, no out only slightly decreases your run expectancy, while actually increasing the run scoring probability, which was the only thing that matters here. the question is what happens when you plug the actual players and actual managers. does scioscia walk chris young?
Yes. No question Young is walked.
It was horrible.
for the following batters? I say no bunt
Easier to say in hindsight, but you have a guy who’s bad at bunting (Norris) but good at walking, and Williams was wild that inning. Then you have Young coming up who strikes out a lot and is bad against righties and of course, Rosales.
In a normal situation I’d bunt, but I don’t think I would with this scenario.
OTOH Norris is a pretty big K or DP threat himself.
Successful bunt leads to Young being IWed there. You still have Rosales with the bases loaded and one out with Crisp on deck. I’d risk pitch hitting someone else there or asking Rosales to just stand there and take.
Or suicide squeeze
I think Scioscia would rather face Young than potentially Coco.
No way. He’s too old school. He loads to the bases for the force.
We’ll never know…
True.
Korach was really fooled by that.
That wasn’t really an ideal route to the ball by Trout
Clearly not very used to playing center.
Woo, c’mon YO!
Let them throw one to the backstop.
Wow, I just saw Cespedes admiring his “HR” and ending up on 1st base, when it would have been the winning run in scoring position if he runs. Wow.
Yeah that was a bad one. Gotta stop doing that
Thad Bosley should have smacked him upside the back of his head and said “segunda de base pantalones sexy.”
Yeah, shocking that Thad offered a fist bump, and Yoennis took it. Given Chris Young’s post-triple frustration, he probably would have seppuku’d in that position
It kind of irritated me that he fist bumped him there.
Fist bumping is his entire job.
dammit
Balls.
Not single fking strike the entire AB.
Cespy trying too hard there. You gotta know that they’re going to be pitching around.
I am reconsidering the 50-year 10-billion contract I wanted the A’s to offer Cespedes.
Considering he tied the game in the 9th two days in a row, I’m willing to overlook the imperfections.
C’mon lads I’ve been up since 5:30 AM, let’s do this pie thing kay’?
Come on Cookie, 3 outs let’s do this!
Wait how is it 11:30?
Because time keeps on ticking ticking ticking into the future.
I never agreed to this
What time does BART stop operating and what options are there after?
Usually 12:20 -ish, a long cab ride or an unpleasant bus ride.
Depends on where you need to go, but 12:30-1 generally. As for other options…Get a ride from a friend?
They just showed a sign at the Coliseum that said 12, but I think brian is right it’s more like 12:15 or 12:30.
Is the station far away from the Coliseum? Because I think KK said some 10 minutes ago that BART travelers have to make a decision and that lot of them are leaving.
There’s a bridge over rail road tracks just outside the left field entrance.
No, 10 minute walk tops. Very close; it’s one of the Coliseum’s best features.
It’s attached to the Coliseum by a footbridge over some freight tracks. About a 10 minute walk.
Its a 5-10 walk depending how you pace it, a small bridge and the station is right there.
It will take you a good ten minutes to get from your seat to the BART platform, add an extra five minutes if you stop to bargain for and purchase a counterfeit hat.
lol
Don’t forget the Churros. 1 for $1, 5 for $3.
prolly a good 15 walk from your seat, 5 if you hurry
In the stadium they announce an earlier time, 11:45 I think, but brian’s right, the actual time of last departure is a bit later than that.
yep, the coliseum official announcement was that last bart is at midnight. last actual trains go by at 12:20~12:30. i was glad for the difference. i played it real close, leaving my seat to go to the flagpole to get my bike to ride to bart juuuuust as that midnight train was supposed to be there… except i had a flat and had to run with my bike up the ramp. so i woulda missed the train and been stuck out in e-oakland on a flat bike. thanks for the 20-minute buffer, coliseum!
Track down Stomper and go on a pruno binge till tomorrow night.
I’ve always wanted to try and hide somewhere in the Coliseum after a game until everyone was gone. They can’t possibly check every place someone could be.
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mr. Charlie O. Finley?
Oh my god I want to read this now.
winner
Sleepover!
Cook is slow, slow cooker.
Um. Brett. Sit your ass down.
Brett Anderson, in the ‘pen, loosening up. Let’s score a run and give him the night off, shall we lads?
Please win here. I do not want to have dealt with a Straily start only to have Brett pitch anyways.
Helluva job by the bullpen tonight.
Most definitely
Pie attempt #4
A’s “in play/ runs” pls.
“in play, pie”
Yay for lead off walks (on our side)!
Hey look. Jerome Williams just remembered he’s Jerome Williams!
Bout’ fucking time.
Donaldson is rapidly becoming my second favorite player.
Thats one spot too low on the list.
Donaldson is making Joshs everywhere look good
I seem to have in my head that Norris is a pretty good bunter. Is that true?
Apparently not
I guess not.
No.
fucking bunts
You know what, DFA, I think Donaldson is pretty FKing good at this point.
Norris, on the other hand …
I sure as hell don’t get recognized for any of the good things I do at work, so this is quite nice.
Bah. Terrible bunt. You still need to run Norris
Admiring the flight of his bunt a la Cespedes.
That could carry!
Norris attempting the rare BITP
Oh man, that could easily have been a triple play.
It also could have been a walkoff sac bunt again.
I love Josh Donaldson
Run Norris!
This could have been the best walk-off in the history of walk-offs
I think I’m going to bed.
SonofBitch
dammit (x2)
NOURBOAUE;HVIPENWVPIRWNKVJLBDF JKBVHBDFKHABSVKJDSBVKJDLKV SAKNALKNBIREBWamn;lmslalc
Well. At least they didn’t load the bases for Rosales to do that. Instead he gets to start the bottom half of this inning.
This game is off the chain already.
Norris’s futility tonight hopefully convinces Melvin not to pull Jaso out so quickly in the future.
I really hate that move.
Ah crap, BA is pitching.
Why the fuck is Anderson in this game? Cook pitched 10 pitches.
A. Anderson is struggling
B. our bullpen is nails right now
C. Anderson is in the bullpen tonight
Which one wins?
Such a fail, I hate small-ball…
but you need to give rosales and chris young a chance to win it.
GO with what got you here
Because Norris is good? I’m okay with setting up a bases loaded with one out. Ask Rosales to keep the bat on his shoulder, hope for a walk. If not, two outs, bases loaded for Crisp.
heh
New closer!
A pitching staff of 9 Brett Andersons…
NICE INNING Bullpen Bert!!!!
Maybe Rosie will prove me wrong by doing something good here.
or not
Your optimism, as is usually the case with Rosales, is entirely unwarranted
Pie attempt #5
I was shocked he didn’t walk the first guy, and I’m not as down on B.A. as most people here.
I still feel better about Anderson than any of our starters over the long run. But using him here certainly makes the thinking behind the skip-a-start plan seem suspect.
Did he get skipped because he was hurt or because he was sucking?
they thought skipping a start would help heal his ankle.
He has still technically skipped the start.
He looks great right now. Velocity back up to 94ish.
Maybe he just needed to skip five hours.
This is the weirdest game ever, MUST HAVE PIE RUNZ NOW!
Rosy walk
-off?thats a fine play at third and fuck.
come on theth.
Well that was a useful inning
thit
LET’S GO BULLPEN BERT, 3 OUTS plz!!!!
Oh geez. No Crisp injuries allowed
And now, no more Coco.
perfect. coc out
Sigh. Crisp hurt. Just fking great. Let’s break Anderson while we’re at it.
wouldn’t it be great if this fixes BA?
Yes, Ray. It most certainly would be.
Game…27, I guess? Now on Tuesday.
Really hope Coco didn’t break himself running that out.
GET THE OUTS.
Rosales has also looked like shit in the field. lots o bobbles.
Seriously. I was thinking the same thing. He’s awful out there. If we’re willing to suffer through that, we can suffer through Green.
This, motherfracking this.
Pie attempt #comethefuckonalready
BRETT ANDERSON is the new Rollie Fingers.
Did Coco tweak the groin again? That sounds so dirty. I hope he is OK, he didn’t look like he was in pain running to 1st.
It looked like his back to me.
Oh Hamilton…
Let me go to bed guys, pls?
Midnight on Monday night makes me grumpy.
Technically it’s midnight on Tuesday morning.
do people just start swinging at everything in extra innings?
Yes.
So the A’s will neither win nor loss on Wac’s birthday. But they will play 13 innings.
Skip Schumaker pitched today
I was half hoping we would see Freiman pitch.
Can we remember that this is Jerome Williams maybe?
Also, stop bitching that the game is still going on at midnight. Most of the times they don’t even start at that time for me.
Who’s bitching?
For fuckity fucks sake…
According to Ray, it’s come down to who wants to win the game most.
It would be cool if Frieman had the walk off.
He’s getting his chance here.
gak
Shit. Don’t get beat by brenden fkin harris
vince just said 5-5 v Anderson
Come on blue
That piece of shit just wanted to get out of there. Should’ve been 0-2 to Shuck.
I can’t believe it.
Good God.
keep it here brett
Are you fucking kidding me ump
That’s it, I’ve had it. Instant replay or this game is pro wrestling, not real. Fuck this motherfucking piece of dogshit.
Need robo strike calling. That’s just some grade A bullshit.
Quit squeezing Anderson, you filthy piece of crap
Fucking BS, fuck this.
I’m shutting down the computer and listening to the bottom half of the inning in bed. So since I won’t be around for the end I’ll just post a HOLY SHIT FUCK YEAH WHOO HOO!!! to cover my bases now.
Good enough.
baserunners
I read that as “FKing horseshit”.
Well identified
I’m so fucking pissed.
15 innings so this shiftless, inconsistent EXCUSE for an umpire can give them the game because his pussy ass wants to go back the hotel and jerk off. FUCK YOU KERWIN DANLEY, you are DOGSHIT with cherries on top.
Grittier than you think
Wow. Danley really just sucks, doesn’t he?
And here we go
I know this isn’t a big deal for Jean Quan, but some of us have to work tomorrow.
Appropriate
Make up calls to Norris.
Fuxking Danny Chris young how many double plays can you ground into??
MOTHER FUCKER I HATE YOU
Can we just lose this game already, before we run out of outfielders?
No!
…you mean players, yes? How the hell do we have 25 warm bodies tomorrow? Gotta assume Brett is DLed
and one of young and crisp
This is the FKing worst.
Oh, for the love of Pete..
About fking time!
I want to kiss ROsales on the mouth
Gross. I would just kiss him on the nose.
Gross. I would just kiss a hot chick near him.
Nose kisses are Yoenessa’s move
Well look at Rosales! Optimism is warranted! It’s a new day!
I’m spent.
OMG I take it back
This is the FKing best!
Holy crap, Choice and Peterson this week?
Taylor.
WELLS!
LANGERHANS!
Emil Brown available?
And this time we wish the previous guy had bunted.
Simple Freiman was a pieman….
WTF?!?!?!?!?!?
Frieman looks awful at the plate.
Walk off wild pitch?
that was hella a strike. We must win this.
Balls are strikes. Strikes are balls. Today is not opposite day.
Does anyone even deserve pie at this point?
Rosy on third means much smaller chance for a slider
Big enough, though, it seems
Baseball is indeed a war of attrition.
So with Young hurt Cespedes to Center, Smith to Right, Moss to Left? No DH. Oh the fun.
Weird baseball!
Close.
BRETT ANDERSON: Sorry bro, just jokin! I love you lots. thanks in advance for the strikes!
Does he even get a hold?
nope
This game boggles the brain.
This is insane, dammit Freiman.
I’m going to bed. I’ve had enough
I’d love to, but there’s no way I could sleep after sitting through 5 1/2 hours of this.
Agreed. For better or worse
yup
Indeed
Anderson batting 8th.
Not going to happen. They’re ending this fking game in the bottom half.
We’ve lost the DH twice. And it’s still just April.
Heh. It’s funny because it’s 12:30am.
I believe we have thrice no?
Once against the Astros, once tonight. Was there a third?
The detroit game where crisp and cespy went out.
Tigers, I don’t remember the Astros one.
I might be making up the Astros one in my head.
Walk off Anderson home run?
I appreciate that frieman told anderson to stop running. probably saves the team a dl trip there.
For Frieman when he steps on Anderson.
No mere mortal can prevent injuries to Anderson it seems.
Cool. 5 innings. Anderson qualifies for a win
I don’t recall an April game in my whole 40+ years of baseball obsession, that I’ve ever wanted more than this one.
Either way, this is one of the most tense and exciting games this early in the season I can remember seeing. Absolutely epic, like a 1000+ page novel.
This is lining up nicely for a BA walkoff HR in the bottom of the 17th
What year was it when Bobby Crosby was involved in a walkoff in the 17th inning?
2005?
1984
Ah there we go. Steve Karsay (!) got the win.
He retired the next day. Bocro with a walkiff walk. Just a few days before my wedding, when my future wife went to bed in the tenth and admonished me not to stay up too late.
That was the first baseball game my mom watched with me. Thank you, Action 36/Cable 6.
Somebody post a Rally Salma fer crissakes!
:)
Ooh, I like this new guy’s ERA (SSS, of course).
The A’s better win before my phone dies. They have 8%!
KEEP GRINDING EVERYBODY!!!! 3 moar outz plz Bert.
Bcbsjam
holy smokes. did you guys ever hear about that greek dude who ran 26 miles to tell someone a battle was over? to celebrate his feat, there oughta be races just as long, just as tiering, just as tedious and we they call them something catchy and descriptive… like monday night A’s games.
hee
Best reason to think emulation is good? Dude died…
Yes
Does the AL still have a curfew?
No.
damn
It feels like Morris is doing a good job of framing
Mr Day should have left The Time at home though
because of bart and i had to go home early too. last time i take bart to a 17-inninger, i’ll tell you what.
but i think i was destined to leave early. crazy legs was in the same car with me. everybody was following the game on their phone. he asked me, still tied? i said yup. little while later red-dressed little punkass cheers. couple minutes later crazy legs asks, still tied? punkass says, no angels won. i says to crazy legs, nobody won yet, the A’s still have an inning. he thanked me. i feel like i was meant to be there.
GREAT STORY!!!!! I love ‘Legs, he is a real nice dude.
that story only works tonight. every other night they angels win it. so i’m either truly prophetic or i cursed us into this.
I am no prophet – and here’s no great matter;
I have seen the moment of their greatness flicker,
And I have seen the baseball gods play catch, and snicker,
(And two starters go in and come out, and a Blevins at-bat–there’s the kicker–
And Cespedes trying to swing out of his knicker,
And nineteen innings in, Donaldson’s glove no less slicker,
And Moss growing on the other side greener and thicker,)
And in shorts, I was a-frayed.
…
We have lingered in the chambers of the Coliseum
Below a starry sky draped in a blue, velvet gown
Till sea-gull voices wake us, and we drown.
And King’s nightmares running low on liquor…
winner
nice.
—
and,
“And in shorts, I was a-frayed.”
i had worn totally tattered cutoff jeans to the tailgate, changed into jeans for the game, promptly spilled about 20 ounces of fat tire on my lap, so i changed back into my shorts! now that’s prophetic.
i grow weed, i grow weed
i shall wear my levi’s pee’d.
that’s all i got.
For I have known them all already, known them all:
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
I have measured out my life with player wounds;
I know the voices rising with a rising ball
Beneath the music from Moss’s boom.
Nicely done
That’s fantastic.
Wonderful
good work
So I says to Mabel, I says…
Last one for me. Also unlike Jean Quan, I have to work tomorrow.
Actually, Jean Quan is presenting her new two year budget to the City Council tonight. So a very full work day, but probably starting late enough to allow for sleeping in.
can someone just crush one pleaz
Just hit one the FK out, Donaldson.
Comeon Donaldson
Bottom of the 8th, tied up. One more inning and we could get pie!
Pretty soon ec will be the only one still awake.
One of the very rare occasions of daytime baseball…
Now you know how our workdays suffer sometimes
I think the A’s were distributed the memo saying that non-HR walk-offs don’t count after the 15th
they are going to walk norris, huh
Brett Anderson needs rebar
Tomorrow morning’s 9am lecture is going to be a sleepy affair.
Angles Annoucers on the first pitch to Norris “Right down the middle for a ball.”
That was funny!
The strike zone is small! And it moves!
See, it’s low and outside now.
robots don’t care that they work 6 hours #DFANIGHTMARE
now what?
AndersonBlevinsMoss walk-off HR in the18th19th!Slightly revised
I so totally called it
Frighteningly prescient.
Okay folks, I gave it the good fight, nighty night.
#dreamsofpie.
LET’S PLAY 2!!! Just pretend it’s one.
Kara does not sound happy
When was the last strike out the side lead-off walk-off combo?
So, Anderson has already gone longer than Straily
Makes it through this one and it’s a Quality Start.
Anderson don’t you dare flail at that with your hand
Don’t worry. He hurt his ankle, not his hand
Stick your ankle out for it instead.
Oh of course that happens
Ankle again. Dammit.
my fucking feed cut out
double switch, milone for anderson, playing 2nd, cespedes to short lowrie to second blevins for rosales
Good effort for BA with a bad ankle.
Historic!
Ay, phew
Got lucky there.
C’mon Twiggy, get the out here, then lead off with the walk-off bomb.
Blevins’d!
Walk off blevins!
Wow. People are still awake in here!
It’s all worth it guys, we get to see Blevins bat
Good eye!
This game, what’s next?
It’a an official Oakland record for length.
why, thank you.
Time for one of those 10 seconds home run trot
19
paul harcastle, is that you?
A’ight, I have a meeting in 6 hours. G’night.
OK – two full’s all I can handle.
Let’s pay two!
GRIND IT OUT JERRY BLEVINS!!!! 3 OUTZ LET’S DO THIS!!!!
1:20 AM, and everybody’s bailing out. C’mon guys!
I’m going to have to transfer to bed and radio
This thread was aptly titled.
they’re chanting jerry jerry!
JERRY BLEVINS HAS ALL NIGHT EVERYNIGHT
day. night. what’s the difference?
i really wish i could have stayed.
and i wish i hadn’t talked myself out of driving there once i got home. same thought process that’s talking me out of going there now though…
One of those memorable games for sure
JERRY BLEVINS IS A REAL MAN.
What the hell have you done Poppy…
No sleep til sunrise
the A’s-ty boys are at the coli and they’re kicking it live?
I also would have accepted BeastA’s boys or BA’sty boys
Actually I think I have gotten a full night’s sleep during this. I keep waking up and saying WTF it’s still going? (I don’t have TV hooked up yet, it’s been radio only.)
can we get top of the first at bats this inning?
thank you theth
Lead off walk!
i really want this to end. however if it goes badly i don’t know what will happen.
Pie attempt #…11?
11th time’s the charm!

YWEYEYEYEYEYEYEYESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

That pie be stale n shit.
Self-pie. I like it.
Now the concessions people need to serve breakfast to the people whom BART has stranded.
autopie.
Dan back to tv in time for the self pie
Brandon Moss sounds like a cool dude
btw, so because it was his birhtday, kara interviewed wac on diamondvision between innings kinda in the 6th i think? he says, oh, don’t worry, there’s plenty of time to tie this up and then win it. plenty of time.
[insert repo man quote here]
follow the bouncing ball…
—the hermanos rogdriguez, we don’t approve of drugs.
—neither do i… but it’s my birthday.
oh, i heard you wrong. i’m tired. i don’t have all night anymore.
Does poopy get 2 points? otherwise her Points per innings average will to tanked.
This game was so long and insane, Bourjos, Crisp, Young and Bert all were completely healed by the time it ended.

When I was a kid I always dreamed of hitting a walkoff home run in the bottom of the 29th inning.
With Milone in LF?
Just WOW. Gnight, all.
Gnight Bueller.
That was so much fun.
did you notice we had a moment? during call me maybe, i binoculared over to the bleachers to see who was dancing right when you were binocularing over to 216 to see who was dancing.
Josh Hamilton was really quite a good sport and we had fun holding up the Butterfingers. And then by the 14th or 15th inning we actually had to eat the damn things (concessions closed down around the 8th inning).
Trout, on the other hand, did not seem to enjoy the “UN-DER-PAID” chant. It was fun.
I am so glad you did that
was there an overrated chant too? by the time the echo comes around to the other corner of the coli it’s hard to hear them sometimes.
Yes, for Poooohooooles.
Yeah, right before he hit his first homer. Not so much after.
He had a smug look of satisfaction after that.
Yeah, and pretty much looked at the RFBs the whole time rounding first and on the way to 2nd.
And his team still lost, so FK that guy!
Also, “We Need Chargers” when everyone’s phones ran out, and just before the end, “FOS-SE! clap clap FOS-SE! clap clap KO-RACH! clap clap KO-RACH! clap clap Vince, uh er never mind”.
Ken commented on the yankee stadium roll call for the announcers
Oh, good. I thought he could hear it.
Yeah, that was awesome! I was listening to the game after I got home and, shortly before the walk-off, Ken acknowledged the roll call and said, “We’d like to convey our sincere appreciation of all the fans still here from all of us on A’s Radio.”
I’ve always thought that whatever else we might say of Yankee fans, the Roll Call is a really cool tradition. I admit to calling on Chavvy and Swisher with them when I sat in the bleachers there.
What they said. There weren’t any for Trout that I recall.
So…this crazy game ended within 20 minutes of when I had to wake up to go to work this morning. What the hell.
This reminds of the story of my friend and his father, who were both huge boxing fans. They stayed up for a Tyson vs. Spinks fight, and watched all the introductory bouts and all the commentary and everything until they both fell asleep. Then his mother woke up for work and in one minute between she entered the living room and finished picking up the empty bottles the two lads disposed of, Tyson beat the crap out of Spinks. She then woke up the guys and said – “You can go to bed now, the little one won”.
pffft. why didn’t they just youtube it??
Um, wow. I checked the score on my phone this morning before I was properly awake, which made reading the recap even more confusing than it would have been otherwise. I’m sad I missed Jerry’s AB, but I barely stayed awake through regulation, so I wouldn’t have made it to the 19th anyway.
Fun thread, everyone! Thanks for the entertainment.
So I shut the CPU down sometime around midnight. I don’t even remember when, exactly, but I watched the late, later and latest innings while in bed, using my phone to tweet some of the most random shit imaginable. I wasn’t the only one. After midnight, we let the weirdness just take over like this game did.
It reminded me so much of the Sacramento/Tacoma game I was at last year that went 18. All you need to know about that one was both teams used a position player in the 18th, and in the bottom half of the inning Tacoma’s 1B-turned-P hit a walkoff homer to get himself the win.
The TV in my bedroom is just basic cable, no DVR or anything like that, so I went back out to the other room and waited for them to show this during the highlights:
You have to go look at who RT’d the second one, because it led to me adding:
I made a comment about how the training room must be like a M*A*S*H unit now and I’m impressed my phone’s voice to chat feature actually put that in there correctly. I know this is sure to lead to some roster moves today but damnit, you have a game go 19, set records for time, and it’s the Angels, and you want to get the win after all that.
Pretty crazy.
Oh, and I’d have been in here too but with the juice getting lower and lower on my phone it was Twitter only for me. Too much to be two places at once with that.
So, while you were all watching a 19 inning marathon, I was too.
With her.
She asked me to come hang out.
Thanks, and go As.
Any baseball metaphors you care to share with the world?
Nothing noteworthy.
Thanks, and go As.
great news
So she finally fking told you when she want to actually hang out. Good.
asvd
Great game to win (if only because losing after all of that would *really* suck), but a month in the pitching has to be a concern. Only the Astros have given up more runs than the A’s; only the Astros and Angels have a worse ERA+; only the Astros, Angles and Jays have a worse WHIP.
And unlike Astros pitchers, the A’s pitched 6 games against Astros hitters.
And the A’s lead the league in R. Wait, what?
LOL — the Mariners are 3rd worst in the AL with 93 runs scored… but they have played 28 games, which is the most in the AL. The lowly Twins have only scored 91 runs, but they did it in 22 games. White Sox have scored 83 runs in 24 games, but they are still ahead of Seattle in R/G.
I was impressed with how hard slegnA played — they really hustled down the first base line on every batted ball — we’ve gotten away from that a bit, and it concerns me. Yoenis admiring his single at home plate, for instance — he should have made second base, but for his several moments of quiet contemplation. That said, Bourjos looked like he badly injured that hammie.
They certainly haven’t quit on So … Sc … their manager.
So, will it be Scribner and Taylor, or this guy Vogt of the great early stats? Any vogts for Sonny Gray?
I’m thinking someone probably had a talk with Cespedes about that by now. It’s got to be cut back on, especially when it’s not a moonshot. The way it played out he likely would have been stranded at 2B anyway but you never know what’ll go differently there.
Also someone’s going to put a fastball into his ribcage sometime real soon because of the unseemly gawking.
Meh. When you hit the ball so hard it dents the wall you can watch it.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, the home opener one last year he earned the right to watch. They aren’t ALL that way though
I love that shit though… they are playing a game, have fun doing it.
Thanks, and go As.
But like I said, make sure it’s at least a sure home run first.
I thought it was gone when he hit it.
Thanks, and go As.
yeah, me too. immediately. but i didn’t cheer because trumbo was batting. (holy FK!)
and speaking of sitting and watching it, but this isn’t a critique of yoenis, there was nothing for him to do, what the TV replays don’t show, or at least isn’t as noticeable as it was to me being there, was that during trumbo’s cansecoism, cespedes stood like a statue the whole time. he just knew off the bat that there was no getting within 100 feet of that one.
That Trumbo homer was unbelievable.
Crushed. Yo’s was hit hard too, but it never looked high enough to be a no-doubter. FKing run.
Obviously, so did he.
I’m old school enough to believe that you can have fun while still not disrespecting your opponents. It’s not a clear line, obviously, and it’s also evolving. But Cespedes stays in the box watching his blasts longer than almost anyone. Regardless of how any of us feel about it, some pitcher or manager is going to take offense. From a purely practical view, Cespedes would be well advised to tone it down just a bit.
If only there was Sportscenter here on the left coast, he could admire them there.
‘Til then, it’s like the Dave Barry Pregnancy Rule: unless you see actual evidence of: a child emerging in front of your eyes/the ball bouncing around in the stands,
you: never ask a woman if she’s pregnant/run like hell.
At the very least give us a quick jog done the line and then if it goes out move into a nice leisurely trot. Only stop and stare if it’s going to leave the stadium, not the field of play.
He keeps trying, pretty soon Mt Davis will get knocked down.
Thanks, and go As.
Sorry — Vogt’s a catcher. /needs some shuteye.
Things are looking a little sloppy, but I can’t really fault sloppiness in such a marathon game. It didn’t seem to affect anything this game, but it could be a worry. If there’s one thing Rosales can teach the rest of these guys…
Actually, in that case running all out for everything did him more harm than good. The longer the game goes, you need to save your energy.
Nice win bitches!
You know, I’m glad Mrs. Aces is sick. I was caring for her, saw we were down several runs, and didnt check back because she felt miserable and didnt want to hear the game. I think if she had felt ok I would have been on and probably would have had a stroke.
Well done everyone in bringing this one home!
yay?
Shout out to Josh Hamilton for his 0-8 on Josh Hamilton Appreciation Night.
Right now he’s my second favorite opponent, right after Whiff Wallace.
is there no mlb.com replay of the O-sign hit/home run? they dismiss it pretty quickly in the long recap, but they don’t seem to show the relevant shot either.
Logically, it would’ve been impossible for the ball to hit the sign and land the way it did on the field. It’s probably a good 8-10 feet behind the fence, and when the ball landed it hit right at the edge of the fence and track. With the ball coming pretty much straight down at that point, I don’t see any way it could have hit behind the fence then landed where it did. I think Trout just misjudged it.
i just want to see it once slowly. i was there and didn’t have replay other than trying to use my binoculars to look inside the box above me.
It was weird. The slow mo replays really made it look like the ball changed direction slightly on the way down, but as James says the sign it appeared to hit was way too far back to produce that angle.
stupid geometry.
Clearly, Wolff has created some sort of invisible force field around that O sign to prevent anyone from winning the $10,000. The ball must have hit off of that.
i thought i saw him re-aligning the dilithium crystals!
What stinks is the next inning they had the LF corner camera show the gap between the wall and the sign, but there was no other replay aside from the one from the camera they use for the typical outfield shots.
but i’m much gladder that it’s trout who sucks, rather than the umpires.
indeed
someone should talk to the guy who works the out of town scoreboard. You can see a hand during the ball’s flight

We might need a (:) designation too.
That was a fun re-read. I applaud em and anyone else who stayed to the end. We left after the 10th, though I did stay up and watch the whole thing once we got home, and what a ride that was. The comments in the late innings/early extras are great, with no idea of just how insane the whole thing was going to end up being. Random comments:
– Those seats are great, thanks ptbnl!
– To counteract the mojo, after his 2nd homer I hollered “underrated” for Pujols’ next AB
– What the hell did Jemile do to Billy?
– Kerwin Danley needs a new profession, just godawful
– Brett Anderson gets the game ball for coming in and pitching as well for as long as he did, but man does he need to learn to field his position
was wondering if you stayed…
I’ve been given permission to blame it on ms. s, but would never do such a thing.
Wise.
Those seats are visible fairly frequently on TV when the camera pans up if you know where to look, so we noticed your presence earlier and your absence later.
I would be happy if he just stopped trying to field anything. Considering his apparent injury rate on fielding attempts, I’d rather let the occasional ball go through than have him spasm at everything that comes near.
On my Yahoo fantasy team’s page, players’ stats from this game are showing up on both Monday and Tuesday
swear to god i’ve been biting my tongue about him. now i have proof. HE’S A LITTLE KID IN A MAN’S BODY!!!
watch the standard MLB walk off. Smith gives Moss a full hug, for a longer than it would be comfortable
saw that last night. it’s very awkward. kept wondering what he was whispering to him.
The little arm wave waddle is so good
So, instead of the A’s playing “call me maybe” in the 8th inning, Kara came up and interviewed me. I said that there was nothing to worry about and that we still had plenty of time to come back and win the game. I also mentioned that I would really enjoy some pie with my cake. That was the craziest game I have ever attended, and I have been to a few games at the Coliseum!
Yay!
Happy birthday wacc!
Kind of a dick move for them to wait until your birthday was officially over to win the game though. :(
Thanks, and go As.
Happy birthday!
Crazy game for a happy birthday celebration!
So… how many times has a player homered more than once in the same game, on different days, without a break in between?
Not sure about that, but this espn J.Stark blog notes that Moss became the 7th guy in MLB history to go at least 13 innings between HRs in a signle game.
He also became only the second guy ever to have two HRs and attain the “Golden Sombrero” (4 Ks) in the same game. First was Longoria.
Pretty much the same person!
I still can’t believe they pulled that one out. I’ve been extremely frustrated with Brett but that was just one awesome performance. And it’s been great to see Blevins transform from a guy who could never really stick in the majors to one of the better lefty relievers in the league.
Maybe the best thing about NBCSN’s Classic A’s game rebroadcasts is the walk down FKing memory lane. 770 comments for a single game thread! 771 now. If only we hadn’t traded Casper Wells for cash.
I swore I went to this game, and left, but the thread is strong evidence I did not attend. I now have to troll through the 12-14 box scores to find the extra inning game I took the boys to and left arounf the 11th
