dammit! I should have just looked at Slusser’s tweet, but I already had the other screen up and I was eager to get on to doing prep work for my dinner party tonight.
I’ve been FKing things up lately… nothing too serious, but it’s been a week of verbal missteps, malaprops, and inefficient communication in general.

Something to like about Pedroia: he is bald, not going bald, and sits in base ball dugout, a place where is in not only socially acceptable to wear a hat, but expected, hatless, on the top step knowing cameras are going to focus on him at some point because he is on the DL and took BP today.
Last week I took four 9 year old boys to the movies. Today I’m at the mall shopping for clothes with three 11 year old girls. It’s like I imagine the Bataan death march was.

I’m glad we traded Mazzaro, so we only have to hear the “scouts love his stuff, he just needs to put it all together” discussion once or twice a year, instead of every five days.

Hi, everyone! Took some time off(I’ll try to explain in the next grill. I don’t want to stir up anything in a game thread). PLUS….WE ARE ON A WIN STREAK! ☺
It doesn’t work like AN….you can use the radio buttons to choose how frequently the new comments show up, but you still have to scroll back up to the top right and click on the thread’s name under Unread Comments.
Yeah, like EM said. Set the default update frequency of the new comment widget via your profile page. You still have to manually refresh the page, but the wudget lets you know whether (and how many) new comments you’ll see with gold background after you refresh.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Yessiree! I can straighten it to -3 degrees, and flex to 127( straight-legged being 0 degress). Dr says the other knee will be replaced late July-early August. The only problem is that I can’t yet kneel on it. Tuu much pain from the scar area to support weight. That will fix itself with time, though.

I suppose. Spring training sure would have been a useful time to work on those new skills, though. A big part of me thinks at this point, as pathetic as the A’s offense is, they might as well just blow off defense entirely and get potential bats in teh lineup no matter what the cost.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
anatomically speaking? because i’m fighting the urge to upchuck from the thought that VC is affecting KK’s analytical tone more than KK is affecting VC’s.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
SO there was a nice little thing in the red sox jays game. Youkolis was hit in tghe shoulder. Bard hit 2 including likely injuring Encarnacion. Youkolis started yelling at the Jays pitcher immediately and Arancibia got between the two, everyone yelling.
But the beef wasn’t “I can’t believe you hit me” but why didn’t you hit me on the leg instead of the shoulder. It was refreshing
I don’t see much of a point in playing for a tie in the 5th inning on the road. Unless you expect a DP from Pennington, Reddick and Cespedes are coming up anyways.
It would’ve made sense to bunt there if you had a pitcher at the plate, but Pennington isn’t that bad yet…?
I just hate risking taking the bat out of the hands of Cespedes when you have a good chance of scoring whenever he steps in there. They could have walked him, but then you have the bases loaded. Yeah, Gordon made a damned good play.
I agreed with the sac bunt, because Pennington is in one of those awful slumps he regularly falls into, and I understand Rosales trying to score. It’s not like Cespedes is that damned good. All he’s done is pop out thus far.
Slusser’s blog entry today covers the schools of Manny thought pretty completely (2 weeks in NL iffy value, only makes sense for Manny to keep doing all the right things, yet some in MLB think it will implode soon).
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Thank god they won yesterday or a Vin Mazzaro shutout that pushes the losing streak to 11 would’ve definitely been an insurmountable lowest point of the season.
(Yankee catcher Russell) Martin said Diaz, the home plate umpire in the Yankees’ 6-5 win over the Angels Wednesday night, punished him for arguing balls and strikes by refusing to allow him to throw new baseballs back to the pitcher.
“Laz Diaz is a d***. Write it hard,” Martin shouted as he came into the clubhouse after the game.
…”He said that it was a privilege that I had to earn, for me to throw the ball back,” Martin said. “That’s never happened to me before. I even told him, because there’s guys on base, I like to keep my arm loose. Nope. ‘I’m not letting you throw the ball back.'”
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
That’s why on the replays I was looking hard to see just how it could’ve been missed, like maybe Milone either juggled the catch or didn’t get his foot on the bag somehow.

I was at the game yesterday with ohtobe21likehuston et al. But I won’t be there today. We’re counting on him.
Nice! He’s a cool cat.
nice story, but what is the line-up?
I recognize #5. He is the murderer.
Sadly, she picked a day when yahoo posted the wrong (yesterday’s) lineup for some reason.
Bobby Valentie is crazy. He pulled Damiel Bard after 1.2 innings, yet he had only given up one hit
Once the no-hitter was gone, there was no reason to leave him in.
Christ, what a Blasshole.
He threw one strike all game and Bautista hit it back to the US.
Walking 6 doesn’t help.
well he did hit 2 batters
Cowgill, Pennington, Reddick, Cespedes, Kila, Inge, Smith, Donaldson, Rosales
Suck, Suck, Reddick, Cespedes, Suck, Suck, Suck, Suck, Suck.
Well… we now know why he has a Reddick.
Pennington in the two hole…only in Oakland does a hitter now 0 for his last 29 get moved up in the order.
Only in Oakland does that make you one of the team’s best hitters.
Something to like about Pedroia: he is bald, not going bald, and sits in base ball dugout, a place where is in not only socially acceptable to wear a hat, but expected, hatless, on the top step knowing cameras are going to focus on him at some point because he is on the DL and took BP today.
Nice tale. Albeit a take of woe.
Last week I took four 9 year old boys to the movies. Today I’m at the mall shopping for clothes with three 11 year old girls. It’s like I imagine the Bataan death march was.
How was Chimpanzee. It looks really cute.
It was sweet. The filmmakers who staked out these chimps for 18 months got a lucky break in capturing an unusual and cinematically dramatic series of events.
Mazairoh world
I’m glad we traded Mazzaro, so we only have to hear the “scouts love his stuff, he just needs to put it all together” discussion once or twice a year, instead of every five days.
We may hear that again about the #47 pick
“INge is really in a funk since coming off the DL. I wonder if he lost his timeing”
-things I can’t believe Vince hasn’t said yet
I’m confident he will.
No, he’s just Brandon Inge again.
I still say Milone looks like Jon Cryer
ducky?
may i admire you again today?
She’s gonna laugh. Would I blame her?
Happy Gio day, BTW
first pitch change up to Gio?
Oh, man bat kinda could have solved a LOT of problems
We could see 30 LOB today between the 2 teams
That line-up story has so much win in it.
I edited it to fix the blatant errors.
Nice save!
So Hosmer is good after all?
Too much grit in this lineup to expect runs.
Hi, everyone! Took some time off(I’ll try to explain in the next grill. I don’t want to stir up anything in a game thread). PLUS….WE ARE ON A WIN STREAK! ☺
Whoo hoo!
I do need help though… How the heck do I get this page to refresh automatically?
It doesn’t work like AN….you can use the radio buttons to choose how frequently the new comments show up, but you still have to scroll back up to the top right and click on the thread’s name under Unread Comments.
[sigh] ok. :)
Yeah, like EM said. Set the default update frequency of the new comment widget via your profile page. You still have to manually refresh the page, but the wudget lets you know whether (and how many) new comments you’ll see with gold background after you refresh.
Great to see you back!
Thanks, FSU! Just needed the time to refocus, and cool off.
New hardware still working well?
Yessiree! I can straighten it to -3 degrees, and flex to 127( straight-legged being 0 degress). Dr says the other knee will be replaced late July-early August. Modern medicine is amazing!
Glad to hear you’re healing, doc.
Thanx!♥
Cespedes looks a lot more comfortable in CF than in Left.
Cespedes almost broke wrong on that soft liner, but recovered nicely.
I think he’s better in center and should mostly stay there. Crisp can be a late inning defensive replacement for Manny in the NL parks next week.
I take the opposite view: he’s not going to stick in CF, so he should learn to play a corner sooner rather than later.
I suppose. Spring training sure would have been a useful time to work on those new skills, though. A big part of me thinks at this point, as pathetic as the A’s offense is, they might as well just blow off defense entirely and get potential bats in teh lineup no matter what the cost.
Carter at SS!
I’m not sure he’d be an upgrade over Pennington offensively.
barton
so, rule refresher… do we still drink if it’s KK who says “confidence?”
sure, why not
anatomically speaking? because i’m fighting the urge to upchuck from the thought that VC is affecting KK’s analytical tone more than KK is affecting VC’s.

It’s proper etiquette to hit betters below the waist apparently, but not between the legs.
etiquette-wise, you’re supposed respect, not hit, your betters.
Can you respect them between the legs?
is there any other way???
I’d have rather taken the chance with Cespedes up and two on.
That was a pretty amazing play. I’m ok with Rosales taking that chance.
I was more annoyed with the sac bunt.
With Pennington 0-for-28 and Reddick/Cespedes coming up, I’d have bunted there too.
Not far from having a pitcher at the plate at this point, heh.
The obvious move is to go back in time and slap Melvin while he’s penciling Pennington in the number two spot.
Yes.
isn’t there an xkcd about that?
With Reddick and Cespedes coming up, you’re not just playing for one run by having Pennington bunt.
I can argue it either way, but outside of my general dislike of bunting, I was okay with that decision.
You also figure one hit from Reddick or Cespedes plates a pair in that situation, normally.
I think the problem started when you put someone that can’t get on base in the #2 spot in front of good and assumed good batters
That too.
Apparently the A’s took the day off yesterday and let good players take the field instead. But they’re back now.
Nice double play. Unfortunately, now the A’s have to score two runs against the mighty Vin Mazzaro.
And the A’s are screwed if that storm comes in.
Come all without, come all within
I never knew that song was written by Bob Dylan. And of course, I can’t get it out of my head now.
Be sure to add the appropriate Dylan nasality to the lyrics in your head; the Dylantone is especially strong on his cut of that tune.
you got to get to mazzaro early, he never gives up runs after the 6th
Yeah, we know why.
I usually get the runs after I’ve finished the fifth…
This game is making a good argument for calling up Manny, as long as he can walk.
Because, basically, how much worse can he be than what they toss out there now?
The way his hamstring (I believe) is right now, even walking seems like a chore for him.
So, he’s just a ghost of his former self? Or has he traded steriods for Crown Royal?
Slusser’s blog entry today covers the schools of Manny thought pretty completely (2 weeks in NL iffy value, only makes sense for Manny to keep doing all the right things, yet some in MLB think it will implode soon).
Thank god they won yesterday or a Vin Mazzaro shutout that pushes the losing streak to 11 would’ve definitely been an insurmountable lowest point of the season.
With the Rangers coming into town, it’s a great way to start a new streak.
So yeah, Inge is definitely back to being Inge.
the inge swings both ways.
A rusty ‘Inge to be sure.
Um, that was clearly an out – wasn’t it?
Yes. Laz Diaz is still terrible.
“Hey, Bob? You already know what I’m going to say, don’t you?”
DId you read the story last week about Diaz refusing to allow a catcher “the privilege” of throwing new baseballs back to his pitcher? It was bizarre.
Yeah, that seems like one of those classic “repect mah authoritay” old-school umpire moves.
Here it is:
Wow.
Unreal
Holy shit. That’s… wow. What a douchebag. A “privilege” that has to be “earned”? Really?
Sheesh
ripe for interpretation about who’s the bigger douche.
Yeah, I’m going with Laz Diaz here. I see no problem with Martin bringing it up.
i meant the headline of that second one. i kinda like it.
Point, yes.
No byline. I think Bobby Valentine (wearing a disguise, of course) may have written that.
That was strange, yeah. I was looking for it all over the place.
I count Martin as at least being more amusing based on this:
He looked out. Thanks Yuniesky
That play didn’t look close. Are my eyes deceiving me, or did the umps blow a call again?
I guess it doesn’t matter with the DP.
That’s why on the replays I was looking hard to see just how it could’ve been missed, like maybe Milone either juggled the catch or didn’t get his foot on the bag somehow.
Milone dragged his foot like it maybe wasn’t on the bag
No more Mazzaro. The A’s have a chance!
Today is the fourth time Mazzaro has thrown 6 shutout innings. Two were his first two MLB starts. Third was last year.
with year round interleague, assuming he breaks camp with the team, over under on doolittles ABs with the A’s 10.5?
He should be the DH and closer
I had completely forgotten that the draft was tomorrow.
hey, wake up everybody. cespedes up with 2 on!!!
NM. nap safely everybody.
Ka’aihue = Mr. Sandman
more like freddy kruger. twin killing!!!
good one!
threat over, back to cleaning
Gllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarg.
And there’s the GIDP.
Guys, we’re looking at another shutout here.
“eleven. it’s not even funny.”
’63 Mets were shut out 30 times.
’72 Rangers were shut out 27 times.
This year’s A’s are on pace for 33.
’43 Philadelphia A’s were shut out 24 times.
’78 Oakland A’s were shut out 19 times.
Some of those records are going to fall.
What are the ladies and I looking at?
Hey Carignan, I thought you said your job was to pitch. I figured you meant “pitch well.”
does “sense of doubt” qualify as “confidnce in the Cotroneo drinking game?
i had that same thought and drank twice.
Is it me or does Broxton look like he lost a pound?
Lookin’ as thin as Marie Osmond
hey, good to see you back.
:)
asvd
its good to see jemile today
BREAKING ALERT: The A’s have a runner at third base.
Uh, why did Crisp pinch hit for Donaldson? Why not use Gomes, who can at least hit an occasional HR?
or single for that matter.
There’s something seriously wrong when the best you can bring off the bench is a .167 hitter.
FK
Last two pitchers to win the A’s shutouts?
Liriano and Mazzaro.
Well then it’s understandable. Scouts have always liked their stuff.
How is it possible to build a team that’s this bad offensively.
It’s especially impressive considering they added Reddick, who’s been a lot better than I’m sure the A’s were even expecting.
Indeed. It’s a great achievement.
Yes, thankfully the Red Sox said no when we asked for Felix Doubront instead of Reddick at first.
Yes, Reddick is a much funnier name
it yields more doubrontandres.
The pirates actually have 17 fewer runs scored in just 1 fewer game. Athough the A’s have a lower ops.
It’s not fair to compare our OPS with theirs. Their pitcher gets to hit. You have to adjust for the DH.
Good point, although OPS tells a similar tale with the Pirates at 73 and the A’s at 72.
is there anything quite as grammatically sexy as the correct use of fewer? RAWR!
Why thank you. While I accept that the use of less to refer to count nouns is now widespread, I consider it to be an abomination.
totally with you.
They’ll have to manage to be shutout at least once by the Rangers to keep pace (12/57).
Like that’ll be hard.
it’s almost not fair the rangers get 4 chances instead of just 3 like all the other teams.
Unless Chili is dumber than I think, he knew damn well what he was getting into.
Makin’ history baby!
Well, I have the rest of the day free.
And the draft is tomorrow, so that’s always good for some glimmers of hope.
Early in the season the A’s played unusually well on the road. They certainly fixed that on this MIN-KC trip.
So far this season there are 4 teams with 20 or more games in which they’ve hit less than .200.
The amazing thing there is the Nationals still managing to win almost half of their sub-Mendoza games.
If only we had pitchers like Gio Gonzalez we could do the same thing.
I’m more amazed that there are 2 teams with a larger number of offensively inept games than the A’s.
I went through today’s starting lineup and ranked everybody by career oWAR going into today per B-R:
1. +7.7: Brandon Inge
2. +5.4: Cliff Pennington
3. +4.7: Seth Smith
4. +2.2: Josh Reddick
5. +0.6: Yoenis Cespedes
T6. +0.2: TOMMY MILONE
T6. +0.2: Adam Rosales
8. -0.1: Kila Ka’aihue
9. -0.2: Collin Cowgill
10. -1.0: Josh Donaldson
Donaldson is at -1? Already? The guy has what, 150 PA’s?
Lol
To add to that, the A’s are now down to .209/.288/.331 as a team. A .619 OPS is not only the lowest mark in the AL, it’s the lowest mark by 58 points.
Holy shit.
are you sure
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, does it have a halo around it?
Shitty halos.
I find that to be a religious experience as well.
Remember 10 years ago when the A’s would suck in April and May but then be FKing awesome come June?
You mean when the front office was trying?
So, um, hi.
Um, hi, so.
Hi. So, um,
this is turning out like a cypress hill song.
,uh, miso.
Ram, Man?
(horny)
Ram on…
Ramen!
Ooooh. Perfect for today.
Clam Chowdah and sammich! WOOHOO!
Nom!
or a 2 live crew song?
