  1. MLB social media policy is pretty good — but MLBAM still really, really, really doesn’t get it. Which is weird.
  2. I’m talkin’ about franchise swappin’. I’m talkin’ about what they call nowadays open territories. I’m talk–

ML’s series this week — has he given up? I know he’s setting up the framing/facts presented in each in order to shoot each non-SJ option down, but …

Also: Maury Brown on the SJ issue and the A’s angry press release.

  3. Yeah, that’s some kickass copy.
  4. FSU bait
  5. OK, the third guy is totally Paul Rudd. Also, 2:25 — I guess we know what Rich Harden’s up to nowadays.

#2, I seemed to have gotten his true SJ-onlyness in his Sac “What if” when I threw out my own “What if” scenario. The funny thing is, the most adamant Pro-SJ keeps saying the only way Oakland can work is if they get a free stadium. Then I come up with a scenario where they get that free stadium and Oakland still apparently doesn’t work. My idea is far from perfect, but as a starting point, seems much more plausible than owner exchange, moving to a much smaller market that can’t afford to build a stadium, or contraction. But go figure.

        inconclusive: been to 41?

missed: either MN or IA but not the other one (going from NE to SD), ND, NH, RI, AK, HI

        airport-only: FL, GA

not sure about: SC, may have touched a corner of it while messing around in NC one of various trips

point being, i like driving across the country and i especially enjoy avoiding the interstates. except for the 50. love the 50. but yeah, the rest of the daylight time, i stick to 2-laners.

23 for me. Pretty much a big gap once you get east of Colorado until you hit the coast. I could knock off a good number with a road trip or two, I see. A lot of contiguous states I haven’t visited.

Define “been to.” Does spending four hours in the Anchorage airport count? Blinking through Delaware/Rhode Island/southern tips of Alabama/Mississippi? Eating at a waffle house in Kentucky or getting gas in West Virginia? Either way, I’m probably somewhere ~40, but whether it’s more or less depends on the definition.

A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.

By my count, 41. I didn’t include Alabama, Mississippi, or Delaware, as I never stopped there, from what I remember from 30 years ago when my family travelled the country in our van and tent trailer. We did briefly stop in Providence, though.

          On my need to list:
          Alabama
          Alaska
          Arkansas
          Delaware
          Michigan
          Mississippi
North Carolina (also possible that I’ve driven through here, but I don’t think so)
          Oklahoma
          South Carolina

it’s a tough call. i’ve been to the miami airport like 5 times and even have a favorite place to eat there. i’ve seen cape canaveral from nearly directly above. i even flipped off a really rude immigration officer (no, he didn’t see me) which i guess counts as “sign making.” and yet, can i really say i’ve been to florida?

Ditto here, and I think really the only state that’s just a drive-through is Delaware. I’m pretty sure I’ve spent at least a night in all the others, including OK when I couldn’t get a ride in OKC for hours while hitching south to TX from MN and ended up sleeping in a field somewhere. My missing states are all in the southeast (AL, MS, NC, SC, WV) except for Alaska. Which I would like to go to.

    • gonealookin Mar 15,2012 1:12 pm || Up

I don’t have an exact count but my skips are in the categories of: 1) Alaska; 2) upper New England (ME, NH, VT); 3) upper Plains (ND, SD, NE); 4) Deep South (AR, MS, AL). I’ll fix the Alaska and New England issues sooner or later, but I’d probably need an airplane’s emergency landing to set foot in most of those Plains and southern states.

Of those that I have left, I could most likely see visiting Alaska (Mrs. PDX has family there), Oklahoma (I have a cousin there and Mrs. PDX has family over the border in so. Missouri), and maybe Arkansas as long as I’m in the Ozarks region. Michigan is elusive for no good reason other than I just never went there, even living in Chicago. It’s one of the great disappointments in my life in addition to never visiting St. Petersburg or Kamchatka when I lived in Russia and not switching to Geico.

I’m like you, but my only skips are ND (which I don’t know how I’ll ever get to having been to the surrounding states) and the south (LA, MS, AL). I don’t know off hand which Carolinas, if any, I’ve hit (though I’m going to SC soon), and I don’t think I’ve done WV.

28, only counting states where I can remember actually doing something there (and not counting airports).

The one that I’m the most on the fence on is New Hampshire, which I’ve driven through many times and probably stopped for food many times, but always right at the Vermont border on 89, so I’m not really sure if the places I’ve stopped are in NH or VT. Twenty-eight doesn’t count New Hampshire, so maybe it’s really 29.

I think so (7): WY (when visiting my brother in NW CO), AR, TN, KY, WI, MN, ND (all on family trips as a kid)
      Possibly (2): DE, WV
      Airport only: AZ

I got my annual “50 Coolest Things that Happened in Baseball” from my friend at MLB. It’s not online so I can’t link, but I’ll add a few nuggets. First up, mb bait – JP is a fast starter:

Home runs are just part of the “first game” resume that J.P. Arencibia is compiling. Consider that in the first game of his Major League career and the first game of his second season, J.P has gone seven for nine with five runs scored, one double, one triple, four home runs, eight RBIs and 22 total bases. In two games!

  9. sslinger Mar 15,2012 12:02 pm

I bet Milton never did this:

In a game against the Pirates on August 30th, Andre Ethier pulled off a rarity. He led off the second inning with the Dodgers first hit of the game. His teammates then went: walk, K, walk, walk, sac fly, walk, walk, walk. That brought Ethier up a second time and he promptly recorded his second hit – a grand slam. So Andre got his team’s first and second hits in the same inning.

(originally he wanted to call it “pair of flies lost in the sun, fall for hits, a baseball rarity ensues” but that was just too clunky.)

nm would have loved this game:

Triples are one of baseball’s diamond gems – 10-12 seconds of all-out effort by a base runner sometimes concluding with a dust-flying,
bang-bang play at third. But they don’t come along very often. So it was a triple delight on June 1 when Toronto’s Eric Thames, Rajai Davis and Jayson Nix hit three consecutive triples in the bottom of the fifth inning. The last time a team had accomplished that feat was on May 6, 1981 when the Expos’ Mike Gates, Tim Raines and Tim Wallach did it against the Padres in the ninth inning. The last time it was done by a team from the USA was April 25th, 1981, when the Cubs Steve Henderson, Leon Durham and Jerry Morales did it in the fourth inning while hosting the Philles.

Maybe he can start an inter league game:

On September 3rd, Washington’s Tom Milone became the 18th pitcher in history to homer in his first at bat. What’s more, he did it on the first pitch he saw in the Major Leagues. Of the previous 17 – which includes such memorable names like Clise Dudley, Buster Narum and Gene Stechschulte – we know that seven of them also did it on the first pitch.

No wonder they keep loosing – they’re in the wrong sport:

This item has nothing at all to do with 2011 but it’s still pretty cool. Over the years, the Kansas City Royals have somehow managed to draft three high school baseball players who turned them down to go to college and then went on to become the Number One overall pick in the NFL draft. In 1971 they drafted Steve Bartkowski in the 33rd round and he was then taken #1 by the Atlanta Falcons in ’75. In ’79 they took John Elway in the 18th round but he declined and then was drafted #1 by the Baltimore Colts in ’83. And in 1986 they took Bo Jackson in the fourth round – the same year he was taken #1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bo, of course, was the only football top pick to actually play for the Royals – and also made a name for himself running the ball for the Los Angeles Raiders. One more thing. In the very same draft in which the Royals picked John Elway, they also selected a pitcher from Central Catholic in Pittsburgh in the fourth round. His name was Dan Marino.

I’ve been learning about Nunavut, Canada today. It has one of the lowest population densities in the world. If you took the people of Burlingame, CA and spread them over land the size of Western Europe, you’d pretty much have the population density of Nunavut.

So, KNBR is running a Giants promo with a clip where Sergio Romo strikes out Josh Willingham, capped by Krukow (I think) excitedly saying “another missed opportunity for the A’s.” Meanwhile, the Giants are running ads for season tickets on 95.7, including during the pregame for A’s spring training games, and of course they’ve got the dugout store now in Walnut Creek.

I have mixed feelings about all of this (I like a spicy rivalry, after all), but it is certainly clear that the Giants are more aggressively coming after A’s fans at the moment. It would be nice if Lew and crew would do something about this other than whine.
