So yesterday the question was asked about my father’s writing. Well I was reviewing some of it and I found this great short story (direct link to the PDF) that he wrote a number of years ago. I remember really liking in when I read it for the first time and upon re-reading it, I think it’s one of my favorite of his works. It takes place at the ball park, so totally relevant for this crowd.

Also, when I was reading Mason & Dixon I noticed that the use of the f for s is not a universal 1-for-1 substitution. S’s still were used, but I wasn’t motivated enough to learn the rules of f vs s usage

Maybe some of us aren’t stupid after all.

A new survey from Spectrem Group found that 68% of millionaires (those with investments of $1 million or more) support raising taxes on those with $1 million or more in income. Fully 61% of those with net worths of $5 million or more support the tax on million-plus earners.

“allowed to pocket their employees’ state income tax” is the same thing as “reduced employers’ payroll tax” which maybe is not what should be done, but it’s not some new nefarious thing.

It’s true that in the end it’s the same as government spending, but the targeting is particularly asinine (hence, the stupid comment)

Yeah, that was my reaction too. Tax breaks to lure or retain companies are commonplace, though depending on the specific deal points may be both pound-foolish and tone-deaf.

In a narrow scope, it’s not a horrible thing. But then it’s incentivizing companies over the people which is kind of a problem in this country.

Unions won’t join in Wednesday General Strike. Drat.

Interesting account from a passive liberal who got out in the Oakland streets once the livestream went down.

Resolution: I must continue to use The Twitter for stuff. Though one’s filter to edit out obvious wrong and stupid info must be on hair-trigger sensitivity. For instance, last night 100’s of clueless people kept retweeting OAKLAND POLICE CHIEF RESIGNS and linking the three-week old news about Chief Batts leaving. Clueless people like:

Best overall summary of the political place Jean Quan is in I’ve read to date comes from Robert Gammon; this before her written statement and “I will speak/I won’t speak/I will speak/No you won’t speak” dance with the Occupiers last night.

The video of Jean driving her Prius and nodding along with three young rappers was the source of some hearty laughter during the election.

Saunders of course completely misses not one but two interesting stories here. One, that a huge part of the law-and-order crowd in Oakland is also African-American, including most of the big churches. And two, that in the Bay Area historically liberal city leaders have overseen some of the worst reactions to dissent…think Jerry and the Port protests, or Dick Hongisto and later Tom Bates stealing free newspapers.

EDITOR’S NOTE: NEWCOMERS TO EASTBAYEXPRESS.COM, POLICE CHIEF ANTHONY BATTS RESIGNED MORE THAN TWO WEEKS AGO. PLEASE LOOK AT THE DATE OF THIS POST — IT’S FROM OCTOBER 11 OF THIS YEAR. BATTS’ RESIGNATION HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DECISION THIS WEEK TO RAID THE OCCUPY OAKLAND ENCAMPMENT. IN ADDITION, INTERIM POLICE CHIEF HOWARD JORDAN, WHO TOOK OVER FOR BATTS TWO WEEKS AGO, HAS NOT RESIGNED.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU LIKELY CAME TO THIS POST FROM A LINK ON TWITTER, FACEBOOK, OR SOME OTHER WEBSITE THAT ERRONEOUSLY CLAIMED THAT OAKLAND’S POLICE CHIEF HAD RESIGNED THIS WEEK IN RESPONSE TO THE OCCUPY OAKLAND RAID AND THAT THIS POST WAS PROOF OF THAT. His effect on localized gravity could be construed as an attack.

Well… his first argument is point to what he did last week, not accounting for the fact that he knew all of about 15 plays with the team and had next to no preparation that he was going in when he was sent in. The rest of the arguments have some level of validation, but if you’re leading with that as your first argument, it goes down hill from there.

Gotta be Freese, the big moments trump the body of work for series MVP awards. Also, his goofy, quasi-surfer aspect (dare I say Byrnesian?) will play nicely for the cameras.

Their bullpen was pretty decimated at the time. They needed warm bodies.

Maybe it wasn’t so bad of a trade for this year, seeing as how they won and all.

Plus, Rasmus didn’t set the woods on fire in Toronto. Maybe he never will.
