The Mother Of All tables 27

I started working on a post over at ** some time ago and due to a mixture of laziness and procrastination it is still in my drafts folder. Perhaps it will never move from there. Perhaps I will finish it some day.

Regardless, here is the mother of all tables, which was a starting point for further analysis. It shows pitch effectiveness for most common pitches broken down by handedness:

Average and slugging are without strikeouts – I decided against crediting the strikeouts to the last pitch that finished the at bat. You have the swing rates and miss rates instead. The ones with the asterisk are reduced for the double plays induced on that type of the pitch. All data 2010, MLB.

Generally sinker and slider seem to be most effective against same handed batters and change up against opposite. If you like numbers, enjoy.

    I have no idea what this is, Bojan, but I vaguely suspect you’re superhuman for constructing it.

      not only is he capable of making the mother of all tables, but given a few basic carpentry tools and some scrap wood, he could build you a modest coffee table without breaking a sweat.

    So, basically changeups to shared handedness and sliders to off handedness?

      seems like being the most effective weapon, yup

        So really what we need in a starting pitcher is someone with a FB/CH/SL combo, and these curves/sinkers are extraneous.

          But their effectiveness is being measured in a context in which those other pitches exist and are being used, so you can’t just drop them and assume the results otherwise stay the same.

        Thats interesting because the change up especially with lefties is pruported to be the most important pitch for off handedness. I wonder if you eliminate pitchers with a slider if the effectiveness of a changeup goes up vrs otherhanded players.

      What am I missing? I got the opposite conclusion from the chart (assuming you mean “shared handedness” = LHP + LHB, etc).

      Awesome table, EC.

      Interesting how much lower the miss% is for LHB vs RHP, compared to the other combos.

    I just want to say that this incredibly interesting, and although I have nothing insightful or important to say, I don’t want you to get the feeling that your posting it went unappreciated.

      So according to my new diet, I’m avoiding all sugars and processed flour/wheat. Add poverty, and I’m eating a lot of beans. I just made garbanzo beans the other day–I didn’t even know you could make them. I’ve been eating them on salads for years and never really thought of them as anything other than a salad topping or a third of the bean salad medley. They are flipping delicious.

        Beans rock. Plenty of fiber, protein, vitamins.

        And cheap as FK.

        PROTIPS:

        1. Pre-soak bean for 1-12 hours (depending on type/size of bean, how long you want to have to cook them, and how al dente you prefer them)

        2. DON’T THROW AWAY THE SOAKING WATER!!! Taste + (maybe) vitamins in there.

        3. Use a mirepoix when cooking ’em. Mince root veggies (classically, onions, carrot, celery, but any roots are good), “sweat” in oil (to your taste/diet; I like olive + a bit of butter … or bacon grease), perhaps brown a tiny bit of meat for flava, then add beans + soaking “liquor” + water.

        4. Don’t overcook ’em. Bring to a boil, then simmer on looooooooooow. Check regularly. If they’re small beans and have been soaking for more than a couple hours, they’ll cook FAST.

        5. Go here. His beans are pricey but worth splurging on occasionally. Even if you don’t buy his stuff, read his blog.

          4. Unless, of course, you’re making hummus/falafel/pureed dip/pureed soup.

          … speaking of which …

          6. SOUP. Just add more water and some diced (as opposed to the minced for the mirepoix) sauteed veggies. Especially kale. Puree or not. Soaked/cooked grains (barley, whole wheat berries, brown rice) or not.

          why am I not throwing away the soaking water? and if I don’t, what do I do with it?

          • monkeyball Jul 29,2011 2:01 pm || Up

            It’s tasty and may have some leached-out vitamins. You throw it with the beans into the pot with the mirepoix started in it.

              depends upon the beans, I think. I know with black beans, the soaking water is really bitter and tends to ruin the taste of em…

              • monkeyball Jul 29,2011 2:10 pm || Up

                I’ve never experienced that.

                0.5. Rinse the beans before soaking.
