Blevins down, Giese
up
(yep, no lefty in the ‘pen)

Nomar still hurtin’ … no news on Chavez, but Slusser expects one of ’em to be DL’ed (my guess, following
74mk: Chavvy DL’ed Monday … and Nomar DL’ed Friday [after playing once between now and then])

Aaaaaaaaaand — still no Buck in the lineup. For frak’s sake, Billy, send him down, play him, or trade him. On the
other hand: Cust up to #5! And against a lefty!

Sweeney
Cabrera
Giambi
Holliday
Cust
Suzuki
Ellis
Crosby
Davis

Double Thread!!!
I now give you the same info and jokes as monkeyball.-mikeA
Nomar with some more calf tightness; Giese
replaces Blevins in the pen

Pronunciation Guide: “Giese’s viece is being forced to retire and sell cars filled with miece.” Giece does not
rhyme with Nice.
Lineups
Sweeney RF
Cabrera SS
Giambi 1B
Holliday LF
Cust DH
Suzuki C
Ellis 2B
Crosby SS
Davis CF

Jays feature 9 or so guys who will ground out weakly.

“Put me in, coach” is the heartbreaking caption to this photo from the clubhouse.

    That would’ve been a

He probably would have come in for the save. I generally
don’t care for that strategy, but he’s pitched a lot so far and it would have been annoying to have him pitch an
inning or two and still lose.

      Know what? Forget I asked.

Thanks to nevermoor for the links. LB, if you leave AN over this little snit, a problem of your own making (because
you were so fucking in the wrong that it didn’t even have a chance to be funny) then you’re an idiot. Which makes
me feel down on myself ’cause I kinda like your style, i.e. you tend to agree with me on a lot of things and I
      appreciate the fawning.

Nico can be a dick, hardly news at 11 material.

For the record, had I been on AN the day of the “turd in the punchbowl” comment I’d have dunked your head in said
punchbowl. The only way you could have been more insulting to BBG would have been to post a picture of knee pads
with her name written on ’em.

Well, there are probably other things you could have done that would have been more insulting but I figured the
knee pads bit is universally insulting to most women.

      1. This is about an
incident on another site, so if you have to post this, it belongs there IMO.

      2. So, LB is perfectly fine as long as he’s agreeable, but as soon as he expresses an unpopular and dissenting
      opinion, he’s an “idiot?”

      3. This is the kind of thing that happens with closed systems, such as that at **. People who are on the outside
necessarily have to make assumptions about what’s happening on the inside, because there’s no way to actually
      know.

    • mikeA Apr 18,2009 6:30 pm || Up

I agree with oblique’s #1. Say it over there if you have
      to say it.

      Dear god.

I’m sorry I answered your question.

    • monkeyball Apr 18,2009 8:41 pm || Up

Well, actually, g (and I know I’m late to the party on
this particular monkey knife fight [and, remember, it’s not a monkey knife fight until there’s a monkey involved],
and I agree with the general imperative to avoid **-smacktalk … but I just can’t resist; that, or a good nested
parenthetical), since N*** conceded the point (while trying to make it seem not like a concession and be a
condescending dick at the same time), I think you owe LB an apology on that fact.

That said, I kind of agree with your larger point — that the issue itself was fairly trivial.

That said, though, it was expressed in such a way as to be utterly vague, incomprehensible, and
unenforceable. And the fundamental issue of OH NOEZ MY POINTYHAIRED BOSS IS WALKING BEHIND ME is itself really,
really stupid. Really, really, really stupid: any workplace that is concerned with such a thing has an IT
admin who (personally or virtually) sees everything that’s on one’s browser anyway. And one shouldn’t be looking at
AN at work anyway. Getting busted for … busts … is like (to use an entirely inappropriate simile) getting
caught for running a stop sign while driving with a suspended license.

Man, we need more arguments at FK. Welcome back!

    • mikeA Apr 18,2009 6:53 pm || Up

The 1.4 is because the average runners on base for a HR
is .4, but I’m not sure why it makes sense to use that for this stat… I’m not sure what the point of subtracting
      HRs at all is… I am confused…

I agree with this too, but it’s an equally valid

It’s not about how awesome I may or may not think I am,
its about you being a hypocrite and throwing insults my way.

I didn’t bring up AN, LB did. And I know you saw the AN
related comments because you made a reply. Obviously at that point you saw no reason to say anything about not
      discussing AN on FreeKraut.

Then I throw in my 2 cents and oblique replies. You then +1 him, taking care to make
clear that you do so on all 3 of his points. That includes the point about not discussing AN on FreeKraut. So it
(at the very least) appears that you have no problem with discussing AN as long as folks are taking shots at the
site, be they good natured shots or otherwise. But as soon as someone says anything in defense of AN you don’t
think its appropriate to discuss “the other site” on FreeKraut.

I’m not just talking about whiteshoe’s comment
(which made me smirk, I admit.) I’m talking about the context of the entire thread, which included more than 1
comment by 1 person regarding AN. So I refuse to go for funny until the fundamental issue is understood: that it is
wrong, it is hypocritical, to condone and even laugh at derogatory comments towards AN while professing the belief
that AN shouldn’t be discussed at all on FreeKraut.

  28. Leopold Bloom Apr 18,2009 12:22 pm

    • grover Apr 18,2009 8:29 pm || Up

I have no idea how this comment ended up down here. This
was meant as a reply to X-box.

    • xbhaskarx Apr 18,2009 9:00 pm || Up

      You still haven’t
explained how the comment I laughed at was “derogatory” towards ** or “taking shots at the site”… but it doesn’t
matter, because I will laugh at any derogatory comment if think it’s funny.

You still don’t seem to be grasping the difference between a “lol” at a joke that’s a reference to a past ** event,
and a serious discussion that is CURRENTLY taking place on **. I don’t think it’s inappropriate to discuss
** here, and I never said it was. And I have no problem with people making jokes about **, whether they are
“derogatory” or pro-**, or just references to past events. I think that’s to be expected, considering we all know
each other through **. If a nuanced position on the subject is too difficult for you to grasp, that’s not my
problem, go ahead and consider me a hypocrite. If even one other person here can’t see the distinction, I’ll admit
      that I’m wrong.

(I actually DID make two comments about the LB-pic thing, over on **, and before your tirade. I
think they make it clear how little I care about the whole controversy.)

      • xbhaskarx Apr 19,2009 2:44 am || Up

        Different (from above):
        -“why FK exists”
        -“** shills”

-No, ** is a place for “A’s fans” as a group to do all those things, FK is ~30 people by invitation. If just being
an A’s fan is good enough, why are you complaining about “running out of people to play with” over at **? Yahoo
should be providing you with plenty of new playmates.

    • nevermoor Apr 18,2009 9:08 pm || Up

That last paragraph is a fair point. However, I think
the conclusion should be that not discussing ** is an aspiration rather than a rule. Sometimes they’re just so
darn special no one could resist.

If your ultimate concern is that most of us don’t like AN, I’ve got news for you: we (or, at least, many of us)
don’t. That’s why FK exists. Although I wasn’t involved in starting it, I’m glad people did. That probably means
that defending ** (especially when part of your argument is: “c’mon, of course Nico is a dick”) is going to be
unpopular. That’s something you’ll have to deal with.

      • xbhaskarx Apr 19,2009 7:08 am || Up

Because I had to spend 2
hours and 15 comments debating (justifying) a “lol” and a “+1”.

I didn’t come here to talk about what happened on AN a
week ago. And I don’t really care whether or not you like AN. I’d ask that you keep one thing in mind though…

“We felt like we wanted a nice little no-holds-barred rumpus room for us and our friends (which we consider you
all) to hang out and talk about the A’s … and whatever else comes across our minds. This is in no way intended to
replace or compete with any other online A’s hangouts. Really. Some of us — as will some or all of you, no doubt
      — will still remain loyal and regular members of that Alternate Nameless site; some of us will not. It’s up to
each person, and we take no position on the decision, individually or collectively.”

So sayeth one of the guys who created this site. I know AN has problems and I’m not going to argue with you when
you point them out. But I will defend AN and the people on there if you take a shot at them that I consider to be
inappropriate or undeserved. And that’s something you’ll have to deal with.

I looked up the league leaders in LOB% on THT (speculating

    1. The glossary definition is “the percentage of baserunners allowed that didn’t score a run.” If that is the case,
how is John Danks’ LOB% 103.5?

    2. The formula is (H + BB + HBP – R) / (H + BB + HBP – (1.4 * HR)). I sort of get that: non-inherited stranded
runners divided by runners allowed minus homers. But where does the 1.4 come from?

      But in no
way could you consider the joke to be complimentary towards AN. And the opposite of complimentary is, usually,
      derogatory.

That is in no way brilliant reasoning… so it must be the opposite of brilliant.

Oblique never said it was inappropriate to discuss ** here, so even if I wrote his comment instead of +1ing it, I

No, that certainly is not my “defense”. I already explained my position in that other comment, I won’t repeat it

But, for LB — who I love — here is a slightly NSFW photo, which I wish I could post directly in the comment. I promise to
post at least one NSFW photo in each game thread after FK migrates.

[EDIT: Holy shit, I’m posting from the future!]

    Small ball:
Mariners had the catcher (!) try to steal second down by 2 runs (!) in the 8th.

Neyer is Bernstein … actually I don’t want to be Woodward … whatever:

He struggled in his first high-A season and his first Double-A season, then struggled more in his second Double-A season … and yet, oddly enough, the Rockies promoted him to the majors early in his next season, even though he’d posted a career .750 OPS in Double-A and had played only a few Triple-A games. And you know what he has done since then.

While I think grover is right that LB’s fight on AN is
bogus, and that were anyone to say “we don’t discuss X here” it would be absurd, he’s wrong that LB brought up AN.
It’s been here from the get go, initially (mostly) unspoken, but surfacing explicitly in the last few days. Had I
not been flying, I had thought to post a follow-up LOTR/AN/FK pastiche (the orcs are obviously the Yahoo hordes,
Flashfire is the Mouth of Sauron, and we have all gone into the AL West to fade) that would have concluded with a
scathing self-critique of the flimsiness and disingenuity of the analogy and an invitation to use the associated
thread to lance that boil. Or not.

Just don’t let it become what FK is about – although since tonight’s explicitly contentious thread seems to have
turned into a discussion of olive oil for fuck’s sake, I guess we’re in no immediate danger.

(And incidentally, for those who have quit AN, I have but one thing to say to you … First)

Not that anybody cares what I think, but if you read
sports forums at work, you’re already risking your job, low necklines or not.

I’d love for ** to return to its former glory. I don’t disparage it joyfully. But the truth is, I’ve always
visited that place for the pseudo-social aspect, and that’s pretty much gone.

I know they have a business to run over there. But it’s pretty clear that they’ve chosen quantity over quality.
It’s lamentable, but I’m glad I have this place. I can read Yakov Smirnoff jokes and avoid the seventh-grade
flirting between fifty year-olds. It’s like former ** Lite.
