Searching this phrase brings up some weird ass things. This series is short on weird, long on ennui. I will be more depressed when it’s over.

Stephen Vogt is in the ATL dugout.
they did a very un-a’s thing and brought all the injured players.
I saw that in a tweet, which is how i found out steven vogt is on the braves
Apparently Bregman facing Fried was the first Jew vs Jew matchup in World Series history.
is there some kind a play index?
Zero.
Apparently 1959 is the next most Jewish WS with 3 pitchers between the two teams – Koufax, Sherry (MVP), Latman (DNP).
Ponches? I am using that
well deserved
Wellllllll shit.
My thoughts exactly.
But not a surprise, really. Great move for him and them.
I’m happy for him. I hope he kicks the Giants’ asses.
I am worried about what this means for the 2022 A’s roster.
I hope San Diego is great for him. This off season is going to be incredibly sad and frustrating, I suspect.
Yeah, makes a lot of sense. Moves to a bigger budget and potentially excellent team, while staying in California and not having to deal with NY media or general Mets shitshow.
A’s had exercised his option, but apparently did not ask for compensation. I guess the compensation is getting to pay less for someone else.
Hmm…
Braden is just parroting what he’s been reading on FK for months though.
I give the A’s credit for sticking to what they said about it. March 31 article:
(Also, Kotsay will be cheaper.)
gotta get that cost savings
Though the Padres clubhouse seems pretty toxic.
yes
Bob made it over the wall, may his story be an inspiration to all of us.
Bruce Jenkins, unsurprisingly, manages to have the most assholeish take: Melvin “has finally returned to the big leagues.”
That explains so much about the Chron’s coverage of the A’s.
There’s also the hilarious cognitive dissonance where he dismisses Howard Terminal and says if Fisher/Kaval “had a shred of good sense, they’d at least consider turning the Coliseum site into a charming ballpark community, a thriving village unto itself,” and then in the next breath lauds San Diego’s “lovely downtown ballpark.”
If the A’s had decided to stay at the Coliseum he’d be writing about “the team refuses to take risks or dream big…condemning its fans to always be second-best….clinging to the past…you need more than a BART station with your name on it to succeed in this market”….”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be available if we want to go bizarro world Ted Lasso.
He’d manage to get us relegated somehow.
We might have to settle for Nuno Espírito Santo.
I think Ole’s got plenty more incompetence in him, especially when they play an actual team.
Guess I can use an NL team.
Per one of today’s threads on the Roadgeek forum which you might enjoy following it looks like it’s supposed to be the Dodgers. (“Max” lives in Fresno, and I’m “gonealookin” on that forum in case you want to see more of my nerdiness beyond airplane scheduling.)
I will definitely need to go through all of that. But I find that LA comment to be off outside of MAYBE basketball. I have always seen it around 60/30/10 Gnats/Doyers/other and a close split Niners Raiders. But I guess YMMV.
Also Sprach Zarathustra to open the first Vegas show with a big “L.A. Woman” tease for those trying to guess Sunday night (I would not bet on that one).
(LOL: Also Sprach > 1999)
Maybe they’ll cover Beauty and the Beat.
So far it’s Also Sprach > 1999 > 555 > 46 Days, Strawberry Letter 23 > Twenty Years Later. If BDTNL doesn’t close the set Bob Melvin is coming back to the A’s. Yes it’s a weekend dance party here at Soaker’s.
Need “19” by Paul Hardcastle next.
Actually “Twenty Years Later” did close the set, which means the Sunday “Costume” is Steely Dan’s “Gaucho”. Or not. But, to the extent the broadcasts of these shows interferes with Joe and John on Fox, I’ll be listening to the music.
Joe’s in Phoenix, the second set is just a jump on the Fox jet away.
The first set was funny and pretty good. The second set started with Seven Below, not really a great way to open a set. I thought, you can’t be serious, you’re really going to do this for the entire show?!?! They did. It got to a roll-my-eyes point. I hope the folks who were there enjoyed it; will have to read the reviews tomorrow. Character Zero and BDTNL obviously to end it, and Grind did have me laughing at the lyrics (a recitation of the set list).
I’ll be streaming the Halloween shows from Billy before heading off to see them again in St. Paul. Looks like a weekend them from Wizard of Oz.
Sounds fun. I’m seeing something a little more sexagenarian on Friday night, part of a trip conceived in the summer that features a game between two teams with a combined 3-13 record in Tucson the following afternoon (at least Cal does have all of the 3).
Both of those guys can really pick it for sure. We’re going to see Emmanuel in January at the Freight in Berkeley, and I’d love to see Hensley sometime. Fun to see Billy back when he had the braids. The St. Paul shows were off the charts – went with a bunch of my old friends who all went to our first Dead show together back in May ’77 and the ones who had never seen or even heard of Billy before were blown away.
As usual Peta proposes something utterly ridiculous and helpful to no one, but I have to say, Arm Barn is a genuinely fun and awesome appellation.
In some ways I have come to respect PETA’s approach for being effective trolls before trolling was cool. Propose something outlandish/stupid then cash in from the publicity as all the media points and laughs at the outlandish suggestion. They were good at it way before Milo or Richard Spencer figured it out.
I know they said Toy Story 4 was the last one but how can they pass up this awesome idea?
Afraid to turn this game on because I don’t want to jinx it.
That was pathetic. Whatever the exact opposite of a defense busting ass to preserve the no-hitter, that was Rosario.
Now I hope they lose.
Trump really makes the chop look appropriately nazi.
Go Not Atlanta Suburb Baseball Team.
I am not watching. I am only paying attention in at bat until greinke doesn’t bat anymore
Making the chop look Nazi was the point.
darn
Your Oakland Roots are just underway at Laney College in the last game of the season, needing a win and a loss or draw by the LA Galaxy reserves to make the United Soccer League playoffs. Game is on ESPN+ if you have it.
Oakland won, LA lost. Playoffs!
Playoff win! An upset in El Paso and Oakland is into the conference semifinals.
0-0 at halftime in the conference semi in Irvine against Orange County SC. Game is on KOFY 13 locally.
Ah well, they lose 6-5 in a penalty shootout. Oakland’s shit fails to work in the playoffs again.
I’m sorry I didn’t get the chance to follow their playoff run. Just based on references I see around town the Roots seem to have achieved a pretty cool local Oakland vibe.
I would like Cobb County to be sucked into the bowels of Hades now please.
There may be some odd DH-takes-the-field situation at some point but I suspect Kendall Graveman will be the last pitcher to bat in a World Series game for a long time (backwards K naturally).
If they adopt universal DH, I wonder if they would also change those rules and treat DH like just another position.
Did they just FK up a double-switch?
The A’s, on the other hand…
Sigh…
Ronaldo is inexplicable.
I’m glad the chop bigots don’t get the chance to celebrate at home. Beyond that I still can’t contrive much reason to care about this World Series. I am still watching most of it though.
I know Sean manaea was not watching the World Series game 6. He was busy telling my kid and his teammates they were doing good

That’s so cool!
At least the Asterisks lost.
“Thank you for calling Mattress Mack’s! To return a mattress, press 1 now.”
beep
“Thank you for calling Mattress Mack’s returns line. A representative will be with you as your turn comes up. The approximate wait time for a representative is (mechanical voice) NINE hours and FIFTY-SIX minutes. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for calling Mattress Mack’s!”
In other news, Bobby Valentine almost got elected mayor Stamford, Connecticut.
good lord
The team that won the “World Championship” finished 12th in MLB in regular-season wins.
The postseason is fun as long as the A’s are in it. Otherwise it has become so diluted that it is just a month-long tournament with limited ties to the regular-season results, and proves nothing. I watched the two wild card games, but after that only an inning here and there, I think three innings total in the World Series. I don’t feel like I missed anything. Looking forward to seeing whichever bodies show up wearing the Green and Gold in Mesa in February.
I watched none of the WS, mostly because of the teams in it.
Did check scores occasionally, and glad Houston lost.
We’ll send Ed to Vegas to defend 156 mph and a 0.16 BAC. Wow.
I’ve been in shock. And every thing I hear keeps making it worse.
alcohol metabolizes in and out of your system at about .02 an hour. So if you have just taken 8 shots and are over a hundred miles from home, the only responsible thing to do is to get your car up to speed to get to your destination.
We should be encouraging people to think ahead like this
Weed, Raiders, shots…
Thank you Mr. Hutz.
Ed gets him 3-10 years with a plea deal, though no credit for his house arrest.
What the…
Add Sean Murphy to the display case at the fire sale.
He made $22M with underarmor without having tp smell joe west farts for 3 hours. This would absolutely be my decision.
So today I read Ratto on the impending MLB lockout and Ostler on the right-wing giving habits of our local MLB owners.
And it occurred to me that you can explain both Manfred’s friendliness to A’s relocation fancies and the A’s letting Melvin go, plus the next bunch of shoes to drop, with the theory that Fisher has pledged to be a lockout hardliner. In the past MLB hasn’t have quite enough high revenue teams/owners to sustain their party line vs MLBPA very long, so they need to enlist some low/mid revenue owners to have a working hardline majority. Which is all to say I’m not clearing my summer 2022 calendar for Coliseum visits.
Can you fit the season ticket price hike into your theory?
Yes! If you’re assuming a protracted lockout you’re going to alienate a shitload of ticket buyers regardless, might as well get extra cash in hand before that happens. Refunds will be handled by Mattress Mack’s staff.
(In the A’s case ticket revenue is so small it probably doesn’t matter in the larger equation).
Manfred gets another soldier
11 free agents, bit only one, arguably two and change, was a big contributor to 2021.
That makes the A’s favorites, to win th division, yeah?
Canha and Marte for sure.
Petit and Lowrie had some value.
It sucks, because it’s a good free agent class to meet the A’s needs, probably wouldn’t be too expensive.
but, you know…
You and Mr. Fisher have different definitions of “the A’s needs”.
So, Opening Day battery: Brett Anderson pitching to Kurt Suzuki?
Can we have Abad and Doo already warming up in the bullpen?
Good news bad news:
that about sums it up.
Diekman was useful, just overused I think. I can’t imagine they have better options.
Feliz is the closer now?
I disappointed to see Chafin not want to stay, but I expected it. Diekman was overused and put into roles he shouldnt be in. It wouldnt shock me to see him go be lights out next year for some contending team. But my BP is delighted that I will not have to sit through one of his 8th or 9th innings again.
Looking at the map there’s a lot of the big league cities where you could park your boat: Seattle Oak/SF LA SD; Houston St Pete Miami; DC Baltimore Philly NYC Boston; Cleveland Detroit Chicago Milwaukee.
I will miss this which I just found:
So is this Barstool scumbag one of Braden’s buddies, or just his boss?
before today he would be described as his buddy, after, I don’t know.
Thing is, they are known. It’s pretty obvious they are terrible
It surprised me that Braden ever associated with them to begin with.
Yes I want to believe Braden is not sympatico with the Barstool ethic and it’s just his current step up the media ladder.
Worth noting that thus far Braden has not tweeted/liked in support of Portnoy, unlike many of his Barstool colleagues.
Aaron Rodgers not doing a (partial) Cal education very proud right now.
“I realize I’m in the crosshairs of the woke mob right now, so before my final nail gets put in my cancel-culture casket, I’d like to set the record straight.” He’s taking ivermectin instead, on Joe Rogan’s advice. What a fucking idiot.
He managed to tick off every dumb-guy-who-thinks-he’s-smarter-than-everyone box in a five minute interview. Breathtaking stuff.
I first noticed the assholishness at the celebrity golf, where basically nobody acts that standoffish. Add that to his issues with his own family, considerable acrimony toward Cal when Tedford was fired (the time had clearly come) and his evident disdain for the current Packers coach and that team’s need to move on from his tenure. I hope the insurance company fires his ass.
I’ll admit. I came here to either write or read the words used as a link. I’m glad it’s the latter
Burbank Airport: unchanged since the 1970s. You expect a cluster of PSA stewardesses to come through heading for the plane in the pink hotpants.
Incidentally I’ve just been finding out about Cal’s non-Rodgers Covid issues while standing here in the hour-long rental car line.
i believe the quote would have been “NANCYSMASH”
Big Infrastructure Appropriation seems like excellent news for Howard Terminal. Money in there for ports, public transit, rail, road safety…lots of things that will come in handy.
Could be the best race of the year at 5:40 today from Del Mar. I like Essential Quality to win, Hot Rod Charlie and Art Collector to be close.
This game in Tucson is going to be something like 3-2. Our offense is missing a piece or three and, ummm, it shows.
I watched Carolina for the second time this year and was rewarded!
The Cal game was an unfortunate travesty. I would have been incredibly PO’d if they had to forfeit but what transpired in Tucson wasn’t much better than that. Amusingly Arizona is so atrocious that the game was competitive in a dreadful sense anyway.
I’m back up in Mesa and on the light rail en route to the Pac-12 nightcap, USC at Arizona State.
Josh Allen just got sacked by Josh Allen
Add an interception to the Allentown duel.
And finish the trifecta with a fumble recovery
QB Josh Allen played like it was 2018.
That game was played like they’re closing all the factories down.
Bari Weiss, who fled the New York Times because people were mean to her on slack, starting Safe Space U with the most obnoxious people on the internet in order to take money from people who want a more pretentious environment in which to express their racism is the laugh I didn’t know I needed to start my week.
And to end your day with another laugh you didn’t know you needed, God Made Girls
New York vultures circling…
I’ve known Matt Olson would some day be a Yankee since the first day he got good.
It makes me sick to my stomach.
Slightly weird thing to say.
The manager is probably barred from talking with players once the lockout starts Dec. 1, why pay a guy to not work?
Extra weird for him to throw the ballpark into this. Approve the environmental impact report or we’ll be forced to hire a Bob Geren?
oh god, do I have to start donating to Alameda county supervisors??
Bring in Gallego to wave the Infrastructure Financing District around from third!
Reminds me of what they said about shortstops last offseason. And look how well that worked out.
he broke his leg?
I was telling my seat partner for the Front row seats this saturday that I hope they don’t hire anyone. Just let the players decide on their own
Tony Kemp player-manager
It’s been hard for me to get into the NBA outside of just a casual interest, but I think I’m finally getting there this year. The Dubs are just so fun to watch – they have the depth to match the top end talent, reminiscent of ’15-16, and they’re competing while also developing a bright future. Excited to see what more they can do once Wiseman and Klay get back. Friends and I are going to the game against the Nets next Tuesday.
Obviously it’s only been ten games and no one’s anointing them champions, but regardless of what happens, it’s nice to root for a franchise with an ownership that while not perfect, clearly has championships as an overarching goal and is willing to back up the truck to get there. It’s a good reminder that most fanbases don’t have to deal with crotch-punching existential crises year after year.
After the disappointing end to the MLB season, its looming lockdown and the imminent A’s suckage, NBA (with the Dubs, lots of international talent, and least significant right-wing air about it of any major sport) has the chance to become the league I follow
I will however say that I don’t like the blue jerseys. They look like the Knicks out there
It’s not the blue jerseys so much – they’ve used blue for years – but the addition of the red in the lettering that I don’t like. Stick with the blue and yellow. Y’all know I’ve been into the Warriors for years, and yes once again they are must-watch entertainment. Steph plays with such joy that it is infectious. And seeing Iguodala throw down those dunks last night on the alley oops was tremendous.
I really like the darker blue. I’ve never liked the lighter shade they went to last decade. I don’t want them to keep the red in there beyond this season, but I’m enjoying the Philadelphia look, especially because Otto Porter Jr looks so much like young Wilt.
Watching them last night I couldn’t get over just how fun they are again. And Klay is still coming back!
God how I wish Fisher would sell to Lacob or a Lacob type.
The NBA is great to watch right now. They tweaked the rules slightly this season to reduce the number of cheap fouls and it has really improved the product.
Game was great tonight! The crowd was 70% Dubs fans at least from my perspective. The MVP chants were louder for Curry than KD. There was even some booing whenever Harden touched the ball.
It was the most fun I had watching a sporting event this year.
I don’t know about 70% but that was a very loud contingent at least. Loved how they wanted Steph to hit another 3 and he tossed one in after the buzzer. Interesting to see Kouminga getting more playing time already and showing that he can handle it.
I wonder how KD is feeling about his choice to go the Nets. He has to be so mad at Kyrie Irving at this point, and the Harden he’s playing with now looks very little like the one he played with in OKC. Even if his time with the Warriors had run its course, I’m not sure he picked a great situation for the next chapter.
I’m triple-vaxxed and going to the first University of Cincinnati basketball game of the season tonight. Wish me luck.
USA-Mexico world cup qualifier in town on Friday night if you’ve got $500 lying around.
My step-brother was considering flying out (from San Diego) along with his two kids (ages 3 and 6) before he realized how much those tickets cost.
Hot Dog Hal is there.
That was a great game, and a great atmosphere. Way to go, Cincinnati.
The stadium looks cool. I need to get to a game there at some point.
As mask fatigue is noticeably setting in I think a third shot is prudent. I just passed 6 months and have an appointment for another shot in about a week (I’m fat enough to qualify). In Arizona almost literally nobody was wearing a mask outside the airport, food servers in restaurants being the only exception I observed. In a crowded light rail car after a football game there weren’t but a couple of masks.
The 1st day of stricter requirements in LA found me going with some friends to a Steeler bar in San Pedro to watch MNF. No one checked our Vax cards and masks were off of all the customers basically from the minute they walked in. The place had a VERY sparse crowd so that was a plus. But then I also had to watch the Steelers and Bears-which was a big minus.
They had a mask requirement at the arena, but same scenario that you describe — 90% of people had their masks off once they got inside, regardless of whether they were eating or drinking.
Heather flew back from NY last night. Fortunately there was a empty middle seat, but the guy in the aisle seat ate for the entire 6-hour flight … I wonder how many people intentionally use that as a way to avoid masking.
It will be interesting, epidemiologically speaking, to see how big a COVID spike we see related to holiday gatherings. Vaccination is not so prevalent as to have reached herd immunity of course, but it might be prevalent enough to limit outbreaks to just the areas with lots of idiots (red states and the Cal football locker room). I’m not encouraged that #s are spiking in much of Europe now, which has been pretty consistently about 3-6 months ahead of the US since the early days.
“Areas with lots of idiots” may include Berkeley Public Health. Something didn’t add up there; if the football program is “99.5% vaccinated” as claimed it didn’t make sense that there would be so many positive tests.
That’s an interesting article, and resonates with what I’m going through now. I’ve traveled a little and tested the limits by going to some indoor music shows, and I’ve gotten into the habit of getting tested when I get back even though I’m fully vaccinated (first the J&J and then a Moderna supplement). So yesterday I got a positive test result back. I feel fine, no elevated temperature, nothing. But I had eaten dinner with neighbors the day before the test, so needed to tell them, and now they’ve canceled a trip they were supposed to go on this weekend. But after reading this, I’m really questioning that impulse to get tested. Right now I wish I hadn’t done it.
Reading that article now. I like Dr. Gandhi, quoted at length, but she has also often differed with all her local PH colleagues. Alameda CCC and Santa Clara counties in particular still have stricter-than-CDC testing guidelines in place for tight/large groups, like colleges and workplaces. That said, Berkeley PH issuing sudden, ill-considered directives has been the norm for >18 months and counting.
Looks like California will officially allow boosters for all adults which makes sense given
a) even with our high vaccination rates, the threat of another winter surge seems real
b) no one was really enforcing the booster eligibility guidelines anyway.
I have been eligible but haven’t had a day that i could loaf for about a month.
finally signed up for wednesday
talking to a client yesterday, told a story about going to a show that involved showing vax card. He said “so you got the vaccine?”
uhg. my clients aren’t smart
Where are the best places? I’m having trouble finding a booster pre-XMAS (just got out of a trial, so wasn’t in a position to do it sooner).
I got an appointment at wallgreens. A pharmacy IN a hospital. I was eligible early, so my original appointment was pretty easy, but there was a two week bump for changing. I should have kept it and lied about contact.
I tested negative.
Try Safeway, Walgreens, CVS, myturn, and maybe your county.
I got one easily at Safeway. That was in the time when all the sites were still asking the questions about eligibility, but the state had already said everyone should just get one regardless, and I decided that was good enough for me. They may be harder to find now.
Is there a minimum time after the second shot required?
Here they say it should be 5 months, so I can’t get mine before I leave for the Canary Islands for the winter.
6 months if the previous shots were Moderna or Pfizer (I was just past that), 2 months if J&J.
I’ve also gotten all of my shots at one place, CVS, to keep the record-keeping clean. The CVS website links to the CommonHealth and Clear apps for generating digital passes on the phone. I understand some people who have gone to sites like county-operated vax drive-thrus have had trouble getting a record other than the paper card. Nevada does allegedly have a website for vaccine registry, but every time I try to get my information off that thing it spits back “no record found”.
Edit: I had a regularly-scheduled doctor’s appointment this morning and going into my records on their website, I notice they also show the booster shot and produce a QR code which generates an updated CommonHealth “SMART card”, so there are multiple ways to get to the vax records and generate the passes.
Laughing to keep from crying on this one.
Great time to jack up season ticket prices.
Man, the Coli is going to be one lonely place next summer.
I’m wondering if Fisher has developed cold feet with respect to the Howard Terminal project and is trying to build a lack-of-community-interest case for bailing out.
I think that case has always been there if he wants it. This feels more like him going into a shell in a post-revenue sharing world (with the blessing of Manfred cc: FSU) while he waits to get out of the Coliseum one way or another.
Another thought struck me while hiking this weekend. The Fisher-Kaval A’s at times seem to actively resent their established cheapskate fan base. Clearly they’ve calculated that there’s not much to lose by jacking up prices. I wonder if this is grounded in some kind of Thiel/Musk style break the paradigm thinking. Go ahead and alienate fans who aren’t bringing much money to them anyway, and after the lockout rebuild with younger/richer fans instead.
Trying to bail on the terrestrial radio service would fit that mold, be interesting to see if that resurfaces.
UEFA clearly scheduled the European WC qualifiers with the intent that the bottom-placed team in each 5-team group would be the one to sit out the final round of matches – and got them all right bar Georgia.
50+ are “seniors” now? Sheesh.
So they’re going for the old “double the price but offer two for one” marketing scheme?
50+ is also the AARP threshold.
Wonder how many mid week day games they will actually have, felt like the trend was away from afternoons during the last few pre-COVID seasons.
Woo Hoo eligible since last Week!!
Happy birthday.
I will be eligible too by opening day. The only question is whether I’ll want to go to any games this year.
Thank you! I’ll be waiting for price-slashing deals. And/or not going at all.
This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
Now most of us FKers can get in half off
If we can find a friend.
Meanwhile over in the Championship (aka Division 2), after 17 games Derby County now have the same number of points as their goal difference … -3
this confuses me.
3 wins = 9 points
9 draws = 9 points
5 loses = 0 points
Bankruptcy = -12 points
Financial shenanigans* = -9 points (with a further -3 points suspended)
Total points after 17 games = -3 points
*Technically, “Financial shenanigans while failing to be Manchester City”
