Now that the horrible one-game play-ins are done it’s time for an actual playoff game thread. I’ll be rooting for the Hiawatha Series, for the train line between Milwaukee and Chicago, which we’ve taken with a bunch of other A’s fans on a road trip. I’m sure I’ve told some of you but Milwaukee has a great system in which you can go to a bar or restaurant before the game, the bar runs a shuttle to the not-anywhere-near-downtown ballpark, and then you take their shuttle back to the bar after. Just for that I’m going to pull for them, but if they can take the vile tomahawk chop chant out early then even more power to them. And you kinda have to love that TLR is back and in the thick of it again.

Tampa’s dome only feels like it’s as old as Nelson Cruz.
i like that kid so far
Rays: what do you want to see? Speed? Hits? Home runs? Daring do? Fastballs? Curveballs? what?
Milwaukee is pretty cool. I’ve only been to Old County Stadium…maybe I should remedy that next year. Of course, as a Twins fan I learned to loathe the Braves long ago.
The MLB Network booth for Houston-Chicago is Costas/Showalter/Kaat?! Really leaning into a certain demo there.
As it happens I am watching this with my >80 y.o. parents who are delighted. As Phillies fans they love Kaat especially. His lament about the dying of the complete game pitcher was well received
Explaining why a reference to 40 acres of brown players is awful is proving to be tricky. I already killed one family conversation today opining about renaming things.
I’m quite dumbfounded by that one. Even at my worst I dont see how you say that. How there was not immediately a Vaudville hook pulling The kitty Kaat off stage is shocking.
I missed that one – what does it even mean?
Assuming it ties back to 40 acres and a mule.
The Raiders could have kept Tom Flores when they brought in Brent. The two of them add up to 166 at present.
Adding Plunkett takes it to 239!
Nice knowledge drop from Costas. Yes this will be first postseason meeting ever of LAD and SFG. But they’ve twice played three game tie-breakers
I am having a hard time lawyering that out.
I get that they are based on a tie in the regular season, but I submit they are playoffs.
Rulebook, counselor (drops powdered wig).
Were the games played in 1951 or 62 on the schedule?
Was the regular season over?
These three game series happened after the season?
Did the winner go automatically to the next round?
Were the teams that chosen to play based on their record?
The Mariners came close to playing Game 163 but keeping their 20-year postseason-free streak intact.
I submit those are the only “playoffs” baseball has.
thank you for the amicus
Fine illustration of the crucial difference between “playoffs” and “postseason”
Probably not a great sign for the Sox that Liam is pitching down five runs.
I didn’t watch any of these games, but the highlights that I saw, this seems like a bad game for TLR
Infield in in a tie game in the 7th with a ground ball pitcher, play for the double play.
seems like the outfield defense could have been better
the red sox are a really ugly bunch.
Angel Hernandez behind the plate for a big game. I’m sure he’ll make himself a part of the story.
Smart of the giants to make urias run
I don;t get the rays game today
I didn’t used to have MLB network in my cable package but got it today.
Not sure if that’s a permanent change or something special for the playoffs.
Of course I’ve switched over to football now anyway.
it;s free today. I can’t even get it because I have hulu plus
Oh come on!
If there was ever a case for umpire discretion to award >2 bases that was it. Fuckin Boston
it’s the dumbest rule
Are the boston fans gonna boo the astros?
meanwhile, speaking of motherfuckers
Quite the tour through the rulebook tonight. Grandal totally got hit on purpose there.
it was, but he had the right to be there. Just like runners should run in and cut an angle on the 3-6 DP. or the throw from the outfield.
Reggie Jackson it was not
Agreed, totally legit, it’s on Guriel to move and change the throwing angle, like the 3-6 play as you say.
So there’s no runner on 2nd in extra innings in the postseason? It’s a godawful rule to begin with, but to have different rules in the season and the postseason makes even less sense.
Goddamn Southwest Air.
Were you going somewhere?
Yes, home. Now I am not going home until tomorrow, at best. I believe I’ve seen as much of Virginia Beach as I need to at this point.
There are parts of Norfolk where you can have an enjoyable afternoon/evening that will feel far removed from VB.
Ouch, good luck. I spent 11 p.m.-7 a.m. in Denver airport a few months ago courtesy of them. Southwest is messed up enough it may take a few days to recover, so have survival gear in a carryon.
I just gotta get out of Norfolk. If I get stranded in San Diego on the connection that at least affords better options.
I hope your journey is smoother than Chuck Berry’s.
I’d look good in a silk suit though.
The rightwing Twitterverse and my rabid anti-vax aunt claim Southwest is being brought to its knees by a pilots union wildcat strike over SW’s new employee vax mandate. More reasonable sources think that was only a small part of the problem. Regardless, I have some Delta and American options in mind if this shit continues tomorrow.
Hopefully that flight goes (must be this one) and you wake up high over Albuquerque.
Southwest has cancelled 10% of its flights today (as of now). It’s rare that those hideous Chinese airlines aren’t at the top of that list.
Same for me! I’m stuck in Albuquerque for 2 extra days.
turn left
Speculation from Berman in the Athletic:
Possible, I guess. Resign Harrison, give Allen the shortstop job, get lucky on some cheap relievers and corner outfielders, and maybe we can lose the wild card game one more time.
Also presenting this quote for discussion.
>Resign Harrison
Why? He is old, and pretty bad.
If there’s a better second baseman out there who this ownership will pay for, then that’s fine too. I kind of like Harrison’s whole deal though, so I may be blinded a bit to his mediocrity.
He certainly seems likeable, and also (along with the other deadline acquisitions Marte and Gomes) is a more aggressive hitter than all our lawyerball types, which proved useful at times. But overall, he’s an older and significantly worse version of Kemp. As a side note, he was (unlike Kemp) really miscast as a leadoff hitter late in the year; I never understood that move at all.
With Laureano’s suspension continuing through April, the outfield is going to be something like Barrera/Bolt/Pinder, isn’t it. Maybe it will coincide with Piscotty’s healthy weeks.
On the quote, that may be true is you have a fully-stocked bullpen. But if you’re going to the same few arms every time because you don’t trust half of your pen that’s a problem.
And I think it is an assumption that somehow the end was bad luck vs smoke and mirrors for a month or 2 at the start of the season.
I think Melvin is mostly a very good manager, but that habit of only using his (perceived) best relievers in high-leverage situations seemed especially bad this year. Someone would be good for a while, then get overused, and quickly end up in the not-good group.
And/or the bottom half of the pen being so bad that the best relievers got the call in medium/low leverage situations as well.
Got a chuckle like everyone else as Chipper Jones dropped the foul pop in the stands and got ribbed by Andruw Jones. Then the Tomahawk Chop rises in the crowd and I’m reminded that no Braves player can ever be likeable enough to overcome that monstrosity. On today of all days.
uhg.
Jesse Chavez!?
I can’t ima11gine inspecting jesse chavez in 2011 or so
He put up a 209 ERA+ in 33 2/3 innings. How in the world?
That pisses off the Fields Medal winners no end.
IIRC, back in the 80s or 90s, the math department complained that Fields Medal winners should be able to use those spots as well, on the grounds that it was the equivalently prestigious award in their field, and I think they even had permission for a while. But then the CS department complained that Turing Award winners should also be included. And then the actual Nobelists complained that the whole thing had gotten watered down too much.
So it went back to being Nobelists only. But the Fields Medalists (which I think at the time were Thurston, Smale, and one or two others) got their own spots, with their names on them, next to Evans Hall. I don’t know if that’s still the case. [Edit: this berkeleyside article from much later says they were still included in the Nobel spaces, so maybe things had changed again at some point.]
Anyway, they should all be pissed off about the economists being included, since it isn’t even a real Nobel Prize.
Let alone the Peace Prize, especially after the IPCC won it.
So is Grienke a middle reliever all of a sudden?
This Rays team won 100 games, you say?
This round of the playoffs is not going well.
THIS GUY probably won’t be coaching the Raiders much longer.
Football coaches: stupid enough to put into emails what they say casually to one another every single day.
The Raiders are big on patting themselves on the back for groundbreaking. Black coach, Latino coach, woman executive, and now the first openly gay active player. Let’s see if they actually walk that talk (my guess is no).
Speculation on MNF was that the NFL was going to keep slowly leaking e-mails until Mark was forced to act.
It’s too bad. I always found the guy entertaining, but obviously I didn’t peek in the closet and see the skeletons.
I like the competing theories:
-The NFL went started this because the Raiders are starting to look a little successful.
-Goodell did this because they found Gruden saying mean things about him.
Now comes the fun part as far as football. If I have seen anything over time, it is that these Raiders dont react well to adversity. I’m not saying 3-13, but Im not NOT saying it either.
Yes, expect a Raiders swoon. @Denver -3 Sunday feels like a strong play.
Turns out no, the Raiders overcame the adversity of losing their revolting and stupid coach.
Yes-quite the performance. I was reminded of the game against the Texans after Al passed. But this was a much better end to end showing.
About an hour
Can’t believe they pitched to red-hot Hernandez in that situation.
this post season is getting grosser and grosser
I watched the wild card games, but those last 50 A’s games took a lot out of me and I’m letting the Division Series chips fall where they may. The Red Sox are irritating but so is Tropicana Field, if the Giants lose the Dodgers win and neither way that comes out is appealing, and I’m sick and tired of the Houston Astros. I hope the Championship Series are compelling by the time they get to Game 5. Meanwhile, I’m on my way to Vegas.
Manfred is out there doing his part of the bad cop-worse cop routine this morning. What a dick.
I am not a big believer in body language, but he would touch his nose at every lie.
He’s one of these guys who can’t just deliver a tough message that is still credible (something like “we’re working with Oakland and remain hopeful but aren’t sure we can get there”) and instead goes way too far in a way that is obviously crap.
At the same time, by immediately going to the myriad Canadian girlfriend cities as the alternative he seemed to inadvertently reveal that Vegas is a dead end.
Further confirmation of Vegas as dead end.
The Fox score bug is aggressively ugly.
I thought that Plain Jane near-Arial font they’ve been using the last few years was excellent. But I’m old and irrelevant.
Jesus Christ
yeah, I get the placement of the bug. It’s fine? I wonder about closed captions. but fine.
the other stuff is so PR speak.
I think the linked article is put out by a trade association, so definitely PR; it’s the emphasis on appealing to the younger audience that made me laugh. The 25-39 demographic is going to be more likely to watch a 3-1/2 hour baseball game because of your “over the top” video game graphics, uh huh, and you won’t turn off any of your established older audience with all of that.
Man gamification can burn in hell. I actually have a project (thank God it is at the bottom of the list) to start using a program that will let call center agents get “credits” so their Avatar can get new outfits if they have enough good calls or something. I must be old-I’d just prefer you buy my lunch or give me a raise.
That actually sounds pretty neat, I love dressing up my avatars.
i agree that it is garish and the fonts are wrong, but it conveys information clearly. it’s a good first try
this is some clown stuff
wait, they brought charlie morton back on three days rest up 2-1?
Going to the Jesse Chavez well a lot here too.
I said I was sick and tired of the Astros dammit. Now we’re that much closer to the Orange Halloween From Hell that feels inevitable.
So far I’ve been managing to enjoy this postseason without particularly rooting for any of the teams. Now that’s the only way it can work.
At least I was wrong on my astros rays dodgers braves prediction
Early round results not only disappointing, but too quick, leaving us with zero games today. Hopefully I won’t be the only FKer filling the void with some World Cup qualifying action at 3:30.
Looks like actual kickoff is at 4, by the way.
………FK
Ignominious beginning.
Gooooooooool
Wow that was maybe the best looking goal I’ve seen yet from this USMNT generation.
Can’t hit it any better than that. And on his weaker foot, I believe.
Made up for playing the entire Costa Rica team onside by being off the pitch for the opener.
I liked how Ian circumspectly said Berhalter was full of shit after the halftime interview.
FIFA really wants the US in, yeah?
Good lord, can we keep the british sensibilities on both sidesing officiating?
Try to keep a stiff upper lip, chap.
Ian repeatedly correcting the american that that was an own goal…priceless
Oh no. RIP Ray.
Damn. Seemed to go quickly, and hopefully comfortably.
An Oakland Athletic legend.
Damnit, RIP Ray.
Such a shitty sports year.
oh, that is too bad.
there is a retire 10 thing going on twitter. I don’t like that
Would interfere with the plan to re-sign Semien.
I like the idea of the Ray Fosse Food Pavilion or whatever for the food truck zone.
I like that and I would be ok with retiring something. I dont know if it is his jersey number since it really would be more for his years in the booth. But there should be some sort of recognition.
yes, that is terrific
How about a “Holy Toledo”-style light up sign that just says “Wow”?
Or better still, “How Does It Feel?”
I would love a WOW light up sign.
The Ray Fosse Memorial Dibs Concession Stand.
How great would that be?
It might not be the absolutely worst possible teams remaining in the playoffs, but it’s close
If SF wins tonight it will pretty much be the worst Final Four possible. I don’t particularly dislike the Dodgers. In fact, my quick scan of all 30 MLB teams says that the only team I find loathsome that is NOT still playing is the Angels.
Where’s the Yankee-loathing?
I’m not a Yankee hater. Blame Reggie and pinstripes among others.
It would have been probably my second most horrifying final four, worst would be Angels instead of Astros.
I was a Dodgers fan from 82 (age 0) to ~92; still root for them.
we need the yankkes on that wall
Dodgers going with an opener before Urias. Giants bring back this guy:
via GIPHY
Both fighters still finding the range through the first three rounds.
Hey Ed, got any tips on Amtrak from Santa Cruz? My kid might come home for a weekend soon.
HWY 17 bus is pretty easy. Gets you to dirodon station in downtown San jose.
From there there is a bus, I think 110? to the fremont bart, but that may have changed.
I am going to be there most fridays if she wants to leave mid afternoon then I can grab her and either deliver her, or she can catch bart from my house/
That’s a very thoughtful offer, thanks man, he may well take you up on that some Friday soon.
oh right, segundo
FYI HWY 17 bus is amtrack
I totally spaced the cap corridor and amtrack are at dirodon. Probably an easy transfer
This is exciting!
it’s a fun game.
Should be nlcs
LOL.
Criminal to delete such a great tweet.
Scherzer coming out of the pen in the playoffs. Sucks, doesn’t it Giants.
it’s so stupid they had the depth to get him and turner.
I’m not sad they beat the Giants, but I’m uncomfortable with them being able to just paper over having thrown all that money at Bauer by getting Scherzer.
Eh, the degrees of separation between the ultra-rich and the merely very rich don’t resonate much with me. I said this to my boss earlier today when he made a similar complaint. He’s a Yankees fan.
Ouch, probably Scherzer gets Flores anyway, but that was as bad a check swing call as you’ll see.
I do feel bad for my Giants fan friends, a little.
I feel very bad for my giants fan friends.
Other than those 3, I don’t care
I feel delighted about the Giants’ loss.
I feel as bad for them as they felt for me when they said “yeah Verlander did get a couple of borderline calls didnt he?”
I know I’ve said it before, but the red sox are really really not selling jeans
but I like verdugos shoes
It wasn’t Collin Morikawa’s best day. Three early birdies but then a lot of ugly until he salvaged it some with an eagle on 18. I’ll try the golf again Sunday. Henderson Silver Knights game coming up this evening after a quick bite. Allegiant Stadium for UNLV football tomorrow.
Can they both lose please?
They’re both just so distasteful. No other ALCS matchup since 2000 is even close, except for 2018 when they met before.
I think this ALCS is less distasteful that that one in respect to the Astros. they went on a McKinsey diet and have dusty baker
I think the astros are my team here.
Dusty being live interviewed, praising Kiké’s great catch, watching Kiké hit a moonshot homer, and still happily smiling, very likeable.
My strategy is to let the playoffs play pit and my rooting interest will reveal itself, I just like seeing all these teams fail. I can’t help but enjoy the astros face planting. I missed yesterday because I was standing in the rain by PTBNL’s house. but that looked fun too. But I need the braves to lose
Are Muncy and Treinen the only former A’s left? (not counting 2024 Free agent signing Joc Pederson)
Jesse Chavez.
haha, no seriously
And Graveman.
seattle didn’t even make it in the playoffs
Fake news.
Reddick pitched tonight.
Atlanta coaching staff includes Ron Washington, Walt Weiss, and Sal Fasano.
Drives me insane that they show postseason stats instead of regular season.
I don’t understand why, not do I understand why sabr twitter doesn’t go nuts over it every year
Gameday shows both now. It’s kind of busy, but better.
It’s just the worst, and it’s been this way as far back as my memory extends.
OK I’ve decided. I’m rooting for the visiting team to win seven games thus maximizing the unhappy fan faces I see.
oooo, that is an elegant solution!
I like the cut of your jib, sir!
We are definitely singing from the same hymnal.
Altuve accounted for 6 of the 9 runs in this game.
I wasn’t watching the end, did they do the stupid laundry cart big thunder mountain ride for the home run that made it 5-4?
They did just now on the JD slam.
I didn’t expect any other ending, but Aaarrrggghhh.
Puck drops on the Sharks season tonight, with the West Side Story matchup vs the Jets. San Jose plays without Evander Kane, in NHL investigation limbo for multiple offenses and, as this article describes at length, generally being a complete asshole. Let me take this opportunity to once again crank out the Fire Doug Wilson bandwagon. The guy has been the Sharks GM for 18 years and produced one trip to the Cup finals, missed the playoffs altogether the last two seasons, consistently signed bad contracts and failed to make timely upgrades. Enough already.
I saw someone in a Seattle Kraken hat yesterday. Cool name, but pretty generic logo. I thought the guy was repping Suzuki motorcycles for a moment.
Love the interaction between the young boy in light blue a couple of rows back on the left of the picture and his dad (?) immediately after Mason Greenwood had scored.
oi, that’s for in our house
“Use your outdoor voice”
Hey Siri, can you give us a few innings on the mound?
Allegiant Stadium is a most impressive shrine of American sports, and alcohol sales. You can barely turn around without finding a beer stand ($13-$15). A preference for silver and black decor is strongly advised as the playing field is about the only thing in here that’s not in those colors. UNLV only uses the lower bowl of seating so unfortunately I can’t go exploring in the nosebleeds.
Is the Al torch lit, or just for Raider games?
It’s dark now and I suspect will remain so. Also the windows at that end are closed (don’t they slide open?); it’s about 75 degrees outside and if they aren’t open now I can’t imagine when they ever would be.
According to this LVR-J article those lanai doors can slide open “on those perfect fall days Southern Nevada is famous for,” but Clark County must be notified three days in advance.
That’s not the least bit true. The windows aren’t all that large and are only at that one end behind the torch (which as I thought was not lit), and the roof’s rather limited translucence even in mid-afternoon doesn’t give any feel of natural light. Even if the windows were open I think there would be very little “outdoors” in the sensory experience.
Nevertheless it’s definitely a top-of-the-line NFL stadium and I’d think a Raiders fan who finds that their interest has transferred from Oakland would enjoy a visit. The on-site parking lots are small; UNLV did have a tailgate scene but I bet parking there for the Raiders would be stupendously expensive if it’s available at all. I took a shuttle bus over from the UNLV campus which worked just fine.
Somehow the Dodgers have like 12 new pitchers available tonight.
Nice to see Blaq blow it
Where We Choke 1 We Choke All
I get the impression Newcastle’s former owner was Fisheresque. Maybe we need to get a blood-stained sovereign wealth fund involved here too.
He was much more visibly involved than Fisher, and his retail stores are notorious for how poorly they treat their staff.
Meanwhile two-faced anti-Oakland columnist Scott Ostler manages to both claim to defend the poor aggrieved loyal A’s fan while suggesting that our most successful management staff quit.
He is so infuriating.
I hate to engage with him on the substance at this point, but what drives me especially nuts is the passing assumption that “the A’s are spinning their wheels as far as their alleged dream of building a stadium in Oakland.” There’s plenty of evidence that they are not spinning their wheels — both the financing district and the EIR seem to be moving forward — but he needs to ignore that to justify his nihilistic plan to stop “enabling” Fisher by giving the fans a decent team to follow.
Sure, things will get worse for A’s fans, but “[i]t might even be a last straw, leading to the best possible outcome for Oakland and for A’s fans: Fisher, his cash cow drying up, sells the team to a new owner who keeps the A’s rooted in Oakland (sorry, Vegas) and builds a ballpark.” What a load of horseshit.
Other spent three years complaining that the A’s weren’t actually trying to make HT happen, then when the A’s did actually try and actually spent real $, Ostler’s narrative did not change at all. He’s an incredibly lazy writer, tries to just get by on wisecracking (which also haven’t changed in years).
Incredibly lazy is an understatement.
Titans throw a forward pass on a return against Buffalo.
Deja vu.
Happy to see the Asterisks in the record books for “most slams given up in a postseason series”
Carlos Corera is going to get a huge contract from the Yankees, good for him, but man is it cool to see him scream about his time and his team get beat to shit
Although I find them the least-objectionable of the remaining teams, the 106-win Dodgers knocking out the 107-win Giants and then getting beat up by the 88-win Braves is pretty funny.
Dodgers not in on the joke, apparently.
This has been a great series so far. Also Atlanta must be feeling some PTSD from last year.
I kinda want both series to go 6. Since I can’t have all 4 lose, I want 2 of the teams to be hopeless at the end. I would be happy if the visitors won game 6, per FSU’s rooting interest, but it doesn’t really matter.
Nice opening night win by the Warriors over the Lakers. Jordan Poole is poised for a breakout year, and Bjelica looks like he might be one helluva signing. As always, their ball movement just makes them so much fun to watch.
Bjelica was a revelation, for me at least. Scored inside, scored outside, defended well, rebounded well, made several key passes, played big minutes. I’m impressed.
The Lakers roster is hilarious. How did LeBron end up surrounded by Westbrook, Carmelo, Dwight Howard, and Rajon Rondo in 2021?
United really going for the Europa League.
Schadenfreude meets karma.
Schadenfreude for brunch today. Yum.
Looks like it’s an open buffet too.
Letting Ronaldo and Maguire get away with their red-card tackles declared it open season … it was always going to end in someone getting seriously hurt.
100 percent.
Shame Liverpool let up after the red card … I’d have happily seen them rubbing United’s nose in it after their disgusting play.
First Premier League hat-trick by an opponent at Old Trafford.
Jesse Chavez, NLCS starter.
Perfect through three hitters.
Pulled for a pinch hitter with the perfecto intact. Jesse will be telling his longshoreman grandkids this tale.
getting 27 outs from 8 guys seems like a lot
I saw a tweet saying today’s ALCS game was the first playoff game this season where both starters made it through 5. (And then Sale got beat up in the top of the 6th.)
Even the Dodgers (without Kershaw, but still with Scherzer/Buehler/Urias, numbers 2,3, and 7 in the NL in ERA this year) are using openers and bullpen games for some reason. I get the general trend toward relying more on bullpens, but some of the managers seem to be overthinking things.
(Urias is currently not helping my argument.)
I kind of got the argument the Dodgers used before game 5 vs SF, that Kapler was Mr. Matchups and using an opener sort of forced his hand. It ended up not mattering, but in theory SF could have been without a pinch hitter from the preferred side late in the game. But 1) this seems quite prone to being too clever for its own good, and 2) Atlanta’s roster does not seem nearly as versatile as SF’s so why?
Yesterday, I almost typed, Jesse chave v fat jesse chavez, but thought it may be too racist.
this tbs announcer is really bad, he gets so excited for the dodgers
Vince should have said our tweet was over but low.
I was skeptical about the addition of a third tier of European club football competition, but if it means Jose Mourinho taking a team north of the Arctic Circle to lose 6-1, I have to say it’s a great idea.
Nobody named “Joe Kelly” is allowed to be nicknamed Mariachi. Where are the cultural appropriation police?
his mom is mexican
here is one article about a jacket he traded
white house picture
OK, I regret impugning his Mexican cred. I’ll treat him to his choice of tacos in the Fruitvale. Also that stache rocks.
This may be my favorite burn of 2021.
Also it’s kind of fun to root for Pujols.
Steph Curry: still good at basketball
Jansen with a 9-run lead?
Melvin just called to get Petit up.
I know another AL west team that starts with “A” “s” that wouldn’t score after 2nd and third no outs started an inning
Luis Garcia is pitching quite well. Fox playing a lot of Jerry Garcia into commercial breaks.
And of course just as I type that Kiké bangs a triple off the wall for the first Boston hit.
I had turned it off. ONe of my favorite things in natoinal broadcasters talking about how great mediocre teams that get on october hot streaks are, the red sox do not look like a good team. Like at all.
Of course the better thing was the TBS guy for at least two games thinking Eddie rosario was one of the fastest players in the game because he mixed him and amed rosario
motherfker
This is the most on-brand a sports team has ever been.
Hard to believe SF’s Republican Party has fallen so far as to have MTG headline its event (which hilariously has to be held outside of the city because no vax).
will smith blowing this lead is gonna be funny
Now this is a story all about how
Ugh.
Sal Fasano is easy to like. Go Sal Fasano.
I have watched only a few innings. I follow a bit on at bat, bust my guess is I, and most of the country will watch very little of the world series.
I think I will be happier if the astros win.
I’ve had the word “analyst” in various job titles for almost 20 years and I live in fear of this edit.
I just came across this pretty risky quote from Bobby Crosby on the prospect Max Muncy:
Relevant for PTBNL only: Clem set up a bunch of machines at the pole for SPT quick-look analysis and they are named sptanal01, sptanal02, etc.
Eric Hivon once put up a slide on an approximate method he was working on titled “Anal Fudge”
Curious what the SF-dweller adjuuct of the FK bar association thinks about Chesa Boudin these days. I’m pro prosecutorial reform and get that big changes anger the institution. And I mostly don’t care for Heather Knight. This paints a pretty bad picture though of widespread disarray and ideology trumping common sense decisions.
My brother-in-law is an assistant DA under Chesa. I haven’t heard any complaints.
heather knights coverage of this is trash, she has no clue that she is being fed garbage by garbage people for the sole purpose of demeaning Boudin.
think of this like the chons coverage of the A’s but with the a clearer agenda of wanting them out.
What the people at the chron want is the ending of the criminal prosecutions of white collar people like uber/lyft etc. they don’t give a shit about the petty crimes or real crimes perpetuated by brown people.
the truth is there is very little light between Boudin and loftus/gascon on street level crime issues, you are going to have the same decisions made the same way for the most part.
hearther knight is fun on human interest stories, but she is carrying water for the pieces of shit that are causing the majority of the problems in SF when she gets into politics.
She’s done a couple of big-splash columns over the last couple of years that hit very close to where I live. They are generally factually accurate but totally out of proportion to the thing she is reporting on in a way that seems designed to stoke overreaction among the segments of SF society already prone to it.
It really keeps me from subscribing. I do pay for mission local and the $4 a month for joe eskenazi who I think gives more detailed inside stuff.
That tracks, especially re Knight carrying water for those who approve of white collar crimes. As a govt lifer though the disarray part feels credible. It’s hard to change entrenched institutional culture. Good managers can do it, but bad managers often excuse the chaos they create as unavoidable. And electeds are the worst that way.
I am sure there is disarray, there always has been. DA’s are lawyer cowboys, they aren’t there because they love bureaucracy, and DA offices don’t really budget for managers that aren’t lawyers.
As for ideology, imagine everyone in an office wanting the incumbent and someone from the opposite side becomes your boss. You spent 40% of your time trashing him and his friends to each other and then he is handing out the assignments. People in that job think since they are lawyers they are smart and better thinking than anyone else.
Petty petty petty.
If my bro-in-law came into the office with Chesa and is very much involved in the Uber/Lyft stuff (his background is in labor law), should he be worried about losing his job in a recall? I don’t know how much turnover is normal in those jobs when a new DA comes in.
probably not too worried. I assume he is a RFT employee and not one of the management team. He may get shifted to other paper cases which everyone hates.
Tim redmond and 48hills is trash on a lot of progressive issues. But we are legion in our distaste for the chron. Here he gives space for a counter
Not arguing this, but Redmond simply dismisses the disarray issue as collateral damage (exactly what bad managers say) then ad hominum attacks its source. Also Tim Redmond exchanged his progressive credentials for a NIMBY badge years ago.
The word progressive is utterly meaningless to me these days.
Dismissing his arguments on this because of his position on an unrelated issue is the textbook definition of ad hominem.
when we moved here in 2001, SLF, fresh from working at the stranger in Seattle wrote a couple of small pieces for the Bay guardian in hopes of landing a job.
the sent her to a pathetic protest of some kind where only 4 people showed up and all were organizers or partners thereof. She wrote it up in the way she would at the stranger giving the background to the protest and them mocking them for the theatrical demonstration for the benefit of no one.
Afte the turned it in she was told “we don’t make fun of people we agree with” and the story was cut to a paragraph included somewhere saying the protest happened.
I didn’t dismiss Redmond’s arguments, in fact I largely agree with him and Ed that Boudin is getting wrongly trashed on the merits of his prosecutorial approach. I just reject labeling Redmond a progressive based on his last decade of work.
speaking of nimbys and progressive being meaningless
These people make me so angry.
500 units, 15% BMR and I think the same lower that that.
“shadows” “gentrification” were the concerns.
in SOMA. On a surface parking lot
Gentrification also has lost all meaning. It’s just a thing people say to justify not doing anything to improve cities.
When Jerry was Oakland Mayor he once said “neighborhoods are either gentrifying or they’re slumifying” and people were aghast.
the first time jerry brown was governor, I took a tour of the old governor’s mansion. the guide pointed out the painted toe nails on the clawfoot tub. he said the current governor did that when he was a kid.
Anyway, I can’t see the problem with that statement.
do you see dean preston’s trolling? He is so obnoxious and insufferable.
My supervisor is so bad. But oh he’s very progressive. Just ask him.
So, I have been commenting in these threads to help boost the threads I like in the algorithms.
One, I noted that the article about “an application has been filed” at the 16/mission project that Peskin linked to was paywalled and could he just tell me when people could move into that project.
The reported replied that I had called the paper by the wrong name and I could subscribe to be kept up to day. (it was a good funny appropriate response.
Aaron peskin liked her response.
I then thanked him for liking that and asked my question again to of course no answer
my supervisor, ronen, has been worse.
In her complaining on twitter about the backlash, she touted that 16/mission 100% affordable project without noting that it was paid for by 900+ market rate units being put at the old goodwill at mission/Van Ness
yes, he is very very close to the worst san franscico long time resident.
I did appreciate his giving space to rebecca Young for a counter to knights article.
I can’t speak to the disarray, but my experience tells me every DA office has at least some disarray because of the nature of the employees. they are not bureaucrats, I am a firm believer in bureaucracy. Sincerely.
I am sure it was amplified because Boudin had NO friends and NO allies in the office. and he had lots of enemies.
there are so so so many ways to undermine your bass in an environment like 850 bryant. Of course there is going to be disarray.
TD, Derek Carr to the Island of Foster Moreau.
What an awful slate of televised games today.
And non-televised ones. Only one game today within 10 points. There’s still hope for a epic mud bowl from Santa Clara though.
Seems to have better drainage than Candlestick did.
At least Carson Wentz is providing some comic relief.
A game at the Coliseum tonight would have been fantastic.
It’s 45°F at my house right now, so not close to getting snow, but thank goodness fire season looks like it’s over.
I know 41.5 is low for an O/U but the under still seemed logical. That’s exactly why I don’t bet on sports.
The Geno Smith Seahawks vs. the Jameis Winston Saints turns out to be a pretty even (if not good) match-up.
FK + blockchain = $$$
So when is our ICO?
An “utterly transparent scam bent on suckering the greedy and naive with promises of wealth and transformation.” And harvesting your keystrokes.
The Niners sure did a very wet face plant, but at least the Warriors gave us a game to savor. I don’t care what you say about small sample size, long way to go, whatever, winning California in the first week is a positive sign for the season.
Ditto the Sharks starting 3-0 on a Canada trip before dropping a close one at formidable Boston. Unexpected!
I need to watch them some more – I hardly recognize any of the players it seems but I have noticed the strong start.
I had a dream last night that I was named to the US Olympic baseball team. Current me, age 56, haven’t played hardball in 40 years. No one understood why I was there. Only player I recognized was Dansby Swanson, who was nice to me. I therefore deduce that Dansby Swanson is about to be the World Series MVP and recommend everyone very heavily on that (the odds must be great).
He may not have won WS MVP but he had a helluva series, including the assist on the final out. I hope you at least bet on the Braves because of that.
Kaval and Schaaf presenting together to the county. Kaval appears to be mostly in non-dick mode.
The Supes seem mostly interested in not being blamed by A’s fans and local unions for FKing up a deal they had nothing to do with. Seems like that motivation will carry this non-binding vote at least.
non binding?? Sign me up!
Yes, from what I’ve read it sounds like they probably have the votes. But Keith Carson (rep. for Berkeley and N. Oakland, and president) might be a no.
He sounded open to it at least, but irritated that the city had dragged the county into it late in the game.
4-1 with Carson the no. You nailed it.
Listening to him today was frustrating. He didn’t seem to understand the proposed development on a basic level (asking about how much money the city was going to make off concessions and parking like this would be a new coliseum situation) and making vague references to a groundswell of complaints he’s heard from West Oakland residents that seemed to have nothing to do with this project at all.
he is one of those, huh?
An AC Supes seat is like a lifetime appointment if you can keep from screwing up. You avoid as many hard votes as possible (which they are masters at), and when forced into a position, you vote with your base. That’s almost always labor, but in Keith’s case it’s not, it’s organized black and East Oakland which is very much Coliseum or bust.
Someone check on Ostler. This doesn’t sound right.
If he starts hedging now, in about a year he can claim credit for shaming the team/City into building HT.
he is kidnapped.
This meeting is so long. So, so long.
When I have to watch a public meeting the chances are close to 100% that I’ll be yelling Just Shut Up Already at some point, usually many points. I start to hate even the people I agree with.
They’re still doing public comment!?
