Kaprilian v Gilbert
Bassitt v Gonzales
Manaea v “Flexen”
Seth brown is a cleanup hitter? I am confused. Maybe Laureano tomorrow.
In between the A’s and their hotel is the greatest piroshki place on earth. SLF and I seriously considered having them deliver. It would have cost us $300. We thought about it.
They used to be called “My favorite Piroshki” and were about 3 blocks from our house on capital hill. near vivaci. they were the last holdout before the city/county finally got their building and destroyed it in order to build lightrail and then more housing. It is a win win.
If you go to seattle. Go there. or at least order from grub hub or something, although fuck those guys.
Cannot stand just falling apart against the bottom part of a not great lineup.
This Jake Fraley guy now has 1 hit, 1 HBP, and 9 walks in 20 plate appearances.
On our side, the 2 hole has seemed kind of cursed recently, with Bob trying low-OBP guys like Pinder and Brown there based on match-ups, without much success.
Today it is Olson, who GedIDP on the second pitch of the game, after the first hit Canha.
Love when pur gritty bottom of the lineup works hard and gets on base/scores a run.
Happy to see tony kemp up on may 31, 2021 is not something i thought would mean the A’s were in first place
Nice to see them extending some ABs after that 5 pitch 1st
What is the piroshki place called now?
it’s downtown on third with the upgraded name of “Piroshkis on third”
side note, SLF was a reporter for the stranger when we lived there, on election night 2000 I had dropped her off at a party she was covering when instead of going straight home, I swung by “My favorite Piroshki” to buy some to put at home after we came back from parties/bars because I knew we were going to be getting drunk. I almost didn’t get anything because I sat in my car at a meter in front of MFP in disbelief as Fla was uncalled.
We did return home drunk in the rain, though.
What was that about the bottom of the order again?
My phone ate my reply-but yes I hate when my comments become evergreen.
Related-someone last week mentioned about how these guys become WS contenders against us. Getting real tired of that.
Chapman is awful right now. It’s sad.
Clutch balk.
How do pitchers not balk every time if that’s a balk.
Pinch running seems like a mistake, but not sure…
Hate that pinch running move.
how about now?
Bob is a genius.
Giving us the runner at 2nd means we have to hit with RISP.
Coukd we have Olson run back to 1st?
Great move to take Murphy out. Like I said earlier.
I had left the house for a bit with the kid, came back to a tie score and garcia coming up in the 10th. I typed and submitted my comment before the basehit
Khris-esque throw from Kemp.
You can see why Olson has bad defensive metrics this year.
Pinder no range, Kemp lawn dart. Ugh.
Well, shit.
this is fine.
Ramon, why have you forsaken us. Come back.
Chapman and Olson need to be better. Defensively and offensively, simple as that. This team can’t go anywhere if they’re not both great.
The pitching has been adequate. the offense has been terrible and the team has been lucky.
Its a miracle they will enter june in first place.
There was an easy fix this winter and they passed. there is a fix now and they will continue to pass.
This is pretty much how I see it. The A’s need great starting pitching and production from at least two of Oly/Chapman/Ramon, consistent bullpen with leads, plus some guys, to be able to win almost any one game. Maybe they’re collectively better than the sum of their parts, but only if every part is working just right.
Chapman can’t hit fastballs. At all.
Seems like a problem.
And we are running out of “last year’s injury” excuses..
In retrospect, if you’re going to put Andrus in to run, you should probably leave him in to play short and move Pinder to left.
Disappointing series of games
Well, more shit.
But hey-this means Barrera can come up for 2 more weeks and watch games from the end of the dugout!
Bolt.
Pays to be a switch hitter.
It worries me that what had been dubbed a groin strain is now a hip strain. A hip could be worse, but also makes me suspect Ramon’s been downplaying it, and the med staff was slow to diagnose. Just kinda screams lingering problem.
Lazaro Armenteros, promoted to Lansing today after staying with Stockton through their demotion, had some funny stats in Low A. He struck out in 37.1% of plate appearances and walked in 7.1% (both down from his crappy 2019), but slashed .431/.471/.615 due to a .703 BABIP.
BABIP for hitters, especially at a MiLB level, is semi-controllable. It means you’re hitting the ball squarely and/or are super fast. .703 is on so high a spectrum that it’s not all skill though.
Yeah, I have to assume he is crushing the ball when he makes contact with it.
He’ll fit in perfectly.
7:10 starts are not ok anymore.
agree. I wonder if the time is chosen to get a least a little “night” for the mid summer games
Bear in mind that sunset in Seattle is about a half hour later than sunset in Oakland.
impossible.
Hey john, I got an idea that will save you money on electricity AND you won’t have to pay to fix the left field light bank
I have mixed feelings. Watching mostly on TV, I’m glad even a longish game ends by around 10, but 6:40 sometimes sneaks up on me if I’ve had a busy day.
For the fan attending, 7:10 provides an extra half-hour between getting off work and getting to one’s seat. That may be the difference between a halfway-decent meal and some overpriced junk food at the ballpark. Englishmajor could provide useful input about how working people who attend frequently feel about moving it up to 6:40.
As the proprietor of one of the bars and restaurants between Pioneer Square and
Safeco Fieldthe Mariners’ ballpark, I would be glad the Mariners have left theirs at 7:10. It gives me 30 more minutes of prime time 50 nights a year. I’m sure the prospective operators of such businesses near Howard Terminal would add that to their calculations. The A’s started at 7:30 for many years; I think they went to 7:00 around the early 1990s. 7:30 was later than I ever needed but I’m sure some family people appreciated that extra time to actually go home and have at least a quick dinner before heading to the Coliseum.
And those that worked in pioneer square that needed to get out probably appreciate it too.
Working there in the late 90s early 00s was great. I think my most frequent lunch was solo in the basement of elliot bay book company, probably not the right demographic.
My dad told me recently that he had an 8:00 bedtime until he was a junior in high school (!), and the weekday games all started at 8 in the 60s.
Also, when living in DC, he called the Washington Post in the morning to find out the results of the previous night’s west coast games.
that’s wild
What a joke.
Seems like there’s an obvious moneyball upside to actually feeding/housing/caring for MiLB players correctly. Maybe they’d develop better….
Remember this is the only team that tried to save 1-2 million last year by not paying minor leaguers. The A’s being penny wise, pound foolish misers across every facet of the org is a pattern, not some kind of accident as Kaval tries to explain away here.
A couple interesting facts from the SFGate explainer on this:
– MiLB changed the system this year from players being required to chip in for the clubhouse meals to the team covering it, ostensibly benefiting the players but probably making this kind of crap more likely.
– The two photos were from different teams on May 18 and May 28, so Kaval’s claim that it was corrected “several weeks ago” is a lie (for any normal definition of “several”).
didn’t you see that Kaval was on Jupiter looking at relocation possibilities? Days go by quicker there
That’s a ridiculous misrepresentation – it was a tour of the moons of Jupiter.
Except Europa. He did not attempt a landing there.
He’s operating on parallel paths with Oakland, Las Vegas, and Uranus.
Rooted in Oakland but willing to Ream Uranus.
jerry! jerry! jerry!
Marco Gonzales back off the IL, said to be on a limit of 50-60 pitches. That might get him seven innings.
A home run! I remember those!
See previous comme ts re: Chapman. He should be hitting 9th, but so should half the team.
I hate making this comparison but he looks exactly like 2019 KD.
Of course Chapman is younger now than KD was two years ago, but he has the same inexplicable inability to catch up to pitches he used to crush, which is probably affecting his mentality and approach (see that last at bat where he just took 90 down the middle). And of course, both of these started with a hip injury, which I’m starting to think is something power hitters just never recover from.
This falling apart for 1 inning BS is old.
not going to acknowledge the Dr K i did.
But vince and ken are descripting the pitches as up and flat and not good
3 runs wouldn’t feel like the end of the world if we still had an offense.
Well Olson might have 3 more ABs…
need baserunners a head of him
I’m not sure this inning is entirely real.
can’t waste an andrus wa;k
more home runs forthe A’s would be nice
Well, I was thinking piggybacking montas and luzardo was a good idea, probably won’t happen
I’ll take it.
8 curveballs in a row, fastballs to chapman
At least Chapman didn’t begin and end that inning with strike outs.
America’s Leanest Bacon is maybe the worst pitch I have ever read.
Kony Temp!
my radio might be broken
And this will forever be known as the Kemp game.
He was born on Halloween.
Six run lead and Diekman is in the game, second night in a row?
This is the BoMel special at this point.
And lookie that! Not only is DieBBman not available tomorrow, he is blowing tonight. How fun.
[Picard facepalm gif]
Petit was recently put into a 6 run lead game and proceeded to shit the bed – I wonder if they’re surprised that they’re called to pitch in these situations so they’re actually less prepared/effective than the usual high leverage situations they expect to be in.
Was just gonna say this FSU. Give Jesus a 4th inning, get the mop up guys in again at least to start.
But you cant complain about having to use the 3-4 best bullpen arms every night when you CHOOSE to put them in with a big lead.
Am just noticing that Pinder cut his hair and I don’t like it.
Trivino and Romo up?? WTF??
Seattle pitching an infielder while Bob is throwing his eighth inning guy out there.
Apparently (according to his wife’s Instagram) Graveman is currently in quarantine because he (they) refused the vaccine. Thanks, morons.
Geez GM, kinda sounds like you’re trying to cancel the morons.
I’m not trying to cancel the rest of that bullpen, that’s for sure.
The A’s are now offering packages to their season ticket holders covering July 2nd to the end of the season.
The front row seats are being offered at a flat rate of $170/pair! The A’s describe this as a 25% discount over the public price, but its also a 75% increase over the 2020 price for the same seats and period.
I don’t know what not buying the package would mean in terms of future years, or whether we can expect the huge jump in price to persist, but we’re trying to find out.
Immediate follow-up question: if we did get the package, would folks here be interested at $170/game?
I’d look at my calendar and see if travel can happen.
At most just one game for me.
I might be in for a select game, maybe two. Pretty crazy increase.
Maybe one or 2. Maybe 2 more to help “hold” the tickets for next year, but I don’t see those seats as 50% more enjoyable than anywhere else.
How I picture Coach K retiring and taking Dickie V with him:
We are the 85%
Hooray! Also I’d have thought “no longer have to wear tracking devices” would persuade some of the libertarian-type vax resisters.
woohoo, not rooting for more than 15% morons!
Most important thing to me would be the broadcasters traveling. Off-monitor calls suck no matter how good the announcers are. Some teams’ broadcasters have started traveling; the A’s guys will probably say something about it on the air tonight.
yeah, but when? it’s 645 and the game is not on yet
Last night the cameras showed the empty visiting broadcast booth while Glen praised its well-appointed spaciousness.
Ken and Vince haven’t said anything about their own travel, despite having an opportunity when there was mention that “we might see the Royals broadcasters here at the Coliseum next week”. At this point I don’t quite understand what risk is being averted by not letting the radio guys, at least, travel with the team. A road radio broadcast requires only the two announcers plus a local contract in-booth producer. If they’re all vaccinated, what are we waiting for?
The issue was pointed out, again, when Ken blurted out “Where’s the ball?” in the middle of that last play.
Travel costs money.
Manaea throwing 94-95 in the first inning is certainly a welcome sight.
And maintaining 94 in the 7th inning, definitely a huge improvement from the Manaea of the last two years who was throwing 90 in the first and 88 by the fourth.
Mr. Clean, in the Pantry, with the Knife.
lol
the two murphy’s is confusing
Have they said what that patch is?
Flund it. A Gehrig patch, how something.
I prefer the patch to having everybody wear #4.
Oh God yes.
Given its the Yankees Im surprised Manfred didnt have everone in pinstripes.
8 fastballs. good at bat matt
8 straight fastballs to Chapman
Can’t waste a 13 pitch aB from elvis
Francesco’s isn’t there anymore, but the Stockton Ports will ship over one of their delicious postgame meals.
Wow that was impressive.
canha has seen two pitches
Long ABs, solid line drive hits, smart baserunning. What is this?
And a HR.
huh.
Remember all those A’s teams that suddenly remembered how to hit once the calendar flipped to June.
Kotsay looks every bit the aged, grizzled baseball man but checking his age, only 45.
yeah, he has not aged well.
I finally remembered who I used to think Kotsay’s doppleganger was: Christopher Walken.
I should amend, he has aged like he has enjoyed himself.
Like Jerry Garcia. If you’re going to die at 53, when you look like you’re 70, make them 53 really good years.
And exhale..but again, random brain fart against the bottom of this lineup.
They sure do have a lot of weird camera angles in this place.
I like it. not for the whole game
Now that’s a TOOTBLAN.
GM, the weird angles are courtesy of the Flycam!
https://www.mlb.com/press-release/press-release-root-sports-takes-fans-inside-mariners-baseball-with-unique-views-
1) they paid for the full license of the word “dynamic”
2) I don’t like the idea of the in front of the plate cam. seems like it will get in the way at the wrong moment. I call for my ground rule that weird shit goes against the home team
In addition to the swoopy cam, they have one in left field that gives a look from behind the first baseman I’m not used to. It’s not bad as a way to mix things up between pitches.
I like the swoopy cam a lot on certain replays. There was one on Monday I think where it let you see the centerfielder chasing a ball into the gap while also capturing the runner scoring from second.
A chance of two complete game shutouts in a week? Holy Toledo, which was probably still being uttered the last time the A’s did such a thing.
Of course lets get Sweet Lou up.
Nice win
Humorless Federalist Society dickheads. But I repeat myself.
elle oh elle
Ms. Goodman is a mouth with legs. She got into a lot of trouble arguing with Gov. Sisolak last year over the Covid restrictions.
I’d also note that the A’s would be unlikely to select a site in the City of Las Vegas, unless they went into the Cashman Field location which is probably way way down the list. The Stratosphere, the northernmost big Strip hotel, is the only one in the city limits; everything south of there is in unincorporated Clark County. I can’t quite imagine an MLB stadium in an outlying area like Summerlin or Henderson, but none of those would be in Ms. Goodman’s domain either. Any communication between the A’s and the Clark County Commissioners would be a more interesting topic.
Also I wouldn’t put too much stock in the “no records” answer. In CA at least the penalties for “overlooking” records are essentially zero. And every politician knows that you talk on the phone not in writing if you want things kept on down low.
excellent points
I don’t think matt kemp and todd fraiser are better hitters in 2021 than nick allen.
I’ve just been made aware that Team USA is managed by literally Scioscia, and that he already got ejected once in this tournament for arguing after a replay review.
I had to go to Carson City today and saw on one of those electronic billboards that usually alternate between casino and dispensary ads, “National Gun Violence Awareness Day — June 4. Wear Orange!” After recovering from the shock of seeing any message in gun-luvin Carson City that’s even slightly critical of guns, I realized I can’t help. I don’t have anything red in the closet and I don’t have anything orange either.
I enjoyed this brief history of a place I’m not sure I visited but that still evokes memories for some reason: The Wooz.
That sounds vaguely familiar but I’m sure I never went there. Tangential but similar – have any of you done an escape room? Fun?
I’ve done 1 real 1 and a couple put together by like HS kids for a class, etc. All were fun in one way or another. I would go with people you like and/or arent too dumb. And for me the lesson was dont be overly confident because you are sure to make a mistake that way.
I’ve done a few. The trick is to have 5-6 people who enjoy puzzles. Also to ensure the escape room doesn’t rely too heavily on human intervention to power. Nothing is more frustrating than to have solved part of the room but be stuck because the host didn’t hear you.
I did one real one in SF a few years ago. Was Mrs. N, my parents, my sister, and 5 or so randos. I suspect it would be more fun if everyone in the room knew each other, but I still got quite into it.
Cool, thanks y’all.
I went a few times and had a lot of fun.
A’s had their best day in the standings in two weeks
ASVD
Good for them. I hope they follow the lead of that other local team and develop a pride-colored A’s logo also.
Agreed. Though very fitting that SF went first.
gotta get out there quick to see that kid
oh man, if they move the mound back things are going to get fucked up in such unexpected ways.
can’t wait to watch it happen.
4 strikes!
