That last thread filled up quick. You FKers are prolific. Perhaps an open thread to talk about statistics, internet memes, medical terminology, what have you.

It’s the
secondthird leg of the Triple Crown, on a lovelyMayOctober day from Baltimore, before araging drunkenempty Pimlico infield crowd. My angle is that one of the two best horses will win but a live longshot will run 2nd. Art Collector or Authentic on top, Mr. Big News, Swiss Skydiver, Max Player or Pneumatic second. $2 exacta 3,9/2,4,8,10 = $16, $0.50 trifecta with just AC on top, 3/2,4,8,9,10/2,4,8,9,10 = $10. May add a saver longshot win bet on Max Player if he looks good in post parade.
This is by far the most interesting betting race of this year’s Triple Crown season. Authentic a deserving favorite but by no means assured, will have to work harder for lead today than before.
Lots of intriguing value horses and a few reasons to doubt the faves, fun to handicap.
live longshot? the pioneers heard otherwise.
Wyclef Jean answers with a medley of Riders Up into Knockin on Heaven’s Door.
oh! that was real. you weren’t just replying with super-poignant titles.
All we money gone a hell
:(
I’ll add the chalk $2 exacta box 3,9 since the will-pays say it’s worth it.
Max Player looks great, $5 to Win.
nobody snuggles with max player!
sorry. super oblique simpsons ref…
One approach would to provide occasional truthful updates. Ham-fisted duplicity is the go-to though.
“Mr. Meadow’s remarks were attributed to a person familiar with the president’s health in a pool report sent to White House journalists in keeping with ground rules that he set for the interview. But a video posted online captured Mr. Meadows approaching the pool reporters outside Walter Reed following the doctors’ televised briefing and asking to speak off the record, making clear who the unnamed source was.”
The Preakness braodcast just had an ad for Judge Amy Coney Barrett. She is fair and will decide cases without regard to politics, I am told.
Paid for by CREEP no doubt.
Wow, the filly beat the boys, super impressive.
It’s the Chron’s annual Will They Break Up The Brain Trust article! This year by Killion. Fischer might sell to take profits, Beane might want to pursue his
gambling probleminvestment strategies, Melvin might want to manage the Mets. One of these years this might prove prophetic. For the readers of portents, in the 9th at Pimlico today Bye Bye Melvin surged late but lost by a nose.
This was a remarkably lazy example of the classic Chron form. I don’t think Killion talked to a single person for it.
Someone more erudite than I made this reference:
It was toward the close of the fifth or sixth month of his seclusion that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence.
No respect.
They cut the Tuesday-Friday windows to 3-1/2 hours.
“With the A’s and Astros game running long, we’re now going to take you to Petco Park so you don’t miss a pitch of the Yankees game. Those of you who might wish to continue watching Oakland and Houston for whatever reason, please check your local listings as that game will continue on Cartoon Network.”
“With the A’s and Astros game looking like it might run long, and the Yankees due to start at Petco Park, we don’t want you to miss a pitch of either game, so the Commissioner has decided that this one will be a 7-inning game.”
The third game between the exciting Dodgers and Padres, given the prime 6 pm pacific slot, is going to be on MLB Network. What are these morons doing?
In case you’re wondering what FS1 is showing at that time:
WWE Friday [sic] Night Smackdown, followed by NHRA Drag Racing (both reruns).
MLB Network gets one game from each of the Division Series covered by Fox.
That choice is Fox not competing against itself. The Tom Bradys are on Thursday Night Football on the broadcast network.
Ugh. I hate everything about that. And I assume the reason MLB holds back those two games is to make sure they have a little leverage over the cable companies when it comes to carriage negotiations.
Where does he keep finding these doctors?
Hollywood Upstairs Medical College
United/Spurs is bonkers
So was Thiem – Gaston
And Liverpool seem determined to show that whatever United can do, they can do better.
Bassitt game 1, Manaea game 2
I sure hope this isn’t the final respite between series.
In the sense that from here on each next round starts right after, no more weekends off.
These start times are really pissing me off.
Can’t let two east coast teams play before all their young fans are in bed, or west coast teams play before all their young fans are out of school
To quote the First Lady, “Oh what about the kids?…Give me a FKing break.”
Hmmmmm….
Huh. that is, something
Well well, we know the end is near. Mags just used the l word
lol. i was looking for capital i. the other reporter’s sin.
not unrelated:
I, as someone who typos, am perplexed by that one
I’m sure there’s a qanon theory about it.
I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out Ed’s joke about the word Is.
bill got it.
nope, he is going to survive
My God, I thought Bed showed up when I opened up to all of these comments!
Another KD start.
Bob is good.
This season’s ALDSes are sponsored by Utz, the chips that aren’t sold within 2,000 miles of where these games are being played.
Maybe not the chips but on my Costco trip this morning I noticed giant tubs of Utz Party Mix.
I will not be munching on Party Mix today. I now have enough Kleenex, TP, napkins and paper towels to last until the next pandemic, unless I choose to finance a future Hawaii trip by selling $50 rolls of TP to my desperate neighbors.
Look who’s on the mic for this series.
Please note when he talks about the RF bbq
My luck avoiding work meetings during A’s playoff games has run out. Will have to make sure my phone screen is out of Zoom camera range and that my reactions can be passed off as meeting- related
Trump 2020: “Some Really Great Drugs”
Nice to see they preserved the Trump family tradition of giving the dotard patriarch blank sheets of paper to sign to make them feel like they were doing important work.
And they can fill in whatever they want above the signature. Win win!
it all comes down to who’s writing this script.
classic aristotelean poetics, fatal flaw, divine warnings, moral law/s broken, a three-act arch with boris surviving, bolsonaro surviving, and the reversal in the 3rd act, for tragic downfall causing the audiences’ pity and fear to be sweat away in final catharsis.
in classic chaplin tho, long shot of man in loose-fitting suit walking down the street distracted from hydroxicloriquine, camera shows a coronavirus peel on the ground he could slip on, camera pans to medium shot of man getting closer now distracted on adderall, shot of peel on ground in front of man, pan to man loony-tunes on steroids stepping into closeup range… and chris christie falls down an open manhole.
The pre-game show is focusing on the bad blood between … the Yankees and Rays.
When they talked about our series, it was all about the Astros and their playoff experience.
Jimmy Rollins is annoying. More Pedro please.
Now, what a great hire Dusty Baker has been.
who else could take a team that has won 100 games three years in a row with the #1 minor league rankings to a sub 500 playoff bid?
Starting Reddick at DH is an odd thing.
Something about wanting to be able to PH for him without having to change the OF defense. Galaxy brain stuff.
Good old Reddick with the pop out. So reliable.
Gurriel has shitty contact but lucks into a hit: “That’s how you play October baseball. Bat on the ball!”
Reddick has shitty contact. Crickets
They have three singles on weak grounders, but also two hard-hit balls that produced 3 outs, and two others that were just foul down the RF line.
Lamb has shitty contact – “That’s how you want to do it, McCullers”
Khrush!
its nice to get ahead for a change
MUUUUUURPH
Why is that man batting ninth??
Krush Groove activated!
A lot of generous strikes for McCullers. Glad Bassitt got one too.
Could really use that organ music for some atmosphere here.
If you asked me before the game for the Astros hitters that I was most scared of, I probably would have said Springer, Bregman, and Gurriel… who are currently 4-for-4 while the rest of the lineup is 0-fer.
I am terrified of Brantley.
Did not realize how bad Gurriel has been this season (79 wRC+)
Strike 3 to Altuve was nasty.
SDI-drink.
“Oh lord” – Dusty
Missed the perfect opportunity to ask him about his Johnny Bench comp.
Murph!
Fosse for the win: Townsend and KK start talking about 88 and Ray says “hey-we dont like that so cut it out.”
Yay strapping young lad!
Sorry – just started watching for Lamb’s at bat. I’ll turn it off.
Admit it — you were watching the end of the 4th inning too!
Like the top of the 4th, it’s a lingering effect.
That little lip on the wall in LF is weird.
I was just thinking that it is a still a little hot down here today. Hound agrees.
damn it damn it damn it.
Goddammit Vince, I turn on the radio and look what happened
The pitchers definitely have an extra baseball off the plate on the outside to right-handed hitters. Nevertheless right-handed hitters are having a pretty good day.
Ditto and ditto to Olson.
I remember when Dodger Stadium was considered one of the better pitchers’ parks.
Olson and Davis? it would be pretty great to get those two going
I get that the ball is flying today, but come on Lance, you can’t throw that pitch to Olson and then have that reaction to it going out.
Damn, I thought Grossman’s was out too.
KD’s slowness is really something.
I made a similar remark to myself.
Ugh. Come on.
Doesn’t help that the strike zone seems to keep getting bigger.
He’s concussed now.
I think umpire Gibson is taking pity on the pitchers, not without some justification. It’s like Coors Field in the early days. Starting pitcher throws 5 innings and holds them to 5 runs or fewer, that’s a “quality start”, and then we’ll see which bullpen sucks less.
And Bassitt out after 4+.
Tough to manage like that in the first game of a 5-game series with no off days.
I guess the upside is that Bassitt could be back for game 5.
Mccullers is in the same boat. Yeah, there should be 3 more runs, but attrition is important too.
Kind of surprised they didn’t go with a lefty for Brantley and Tucker, but Petit has looked good so far.
Unfortunately he looked done. With this many pitchers on the roster, you’ve got to pull him there.
I saw the first 2 innings and he was really BABIPed
Yeah, I guess Brantley had hit the ball hard twice, Bregman had a HR.
Lots of pitchers on the roster, but it means at some point you’re giving innings to Minor, Fiers, Weems, and Lou.
Well, not Fiers yet. But otherwise this checks out.
That second strike to LaStella was not.
Haha, Ray still salty about Ball Four.
that is not a good look in 2020
very efficient for petit
Uh oh, lost the bernia bros
Oh good, more chances with RISP.
Pinder cannot hit anything
No hits needed.
that’ll do pin (der)
Canha have a ball in play?
Are the commercial breaks longer for this round?
Marcus has not inspired confidence defensively this year.
C’mon JB…
gak
Just Blasts
Damn, that pitch to Springer was on the outside corner, and somehow he managed to pull it for a double.
I don’t blame semien.
Sign Hendriks
Agreed
Whereas the pitch to Altuve was just horrible.
Errors are gonna happen, but you cannot pitch this shittily especially when you just needed one more out.
FK
Really didn’t want to use Diekman here. I’m looking at those shadows creeping out and wishing they could have waited to use him.
This is the A’s playoff baseball I remember.
hopefully peredes will go one more
Our hitters looked completely helpless against him.
yes. and so gethim a buch of pitches so he’s not available tomorrow
Tomorrow it may rain.
OK, not in LA, but you know what I mean.
Oh Lou
this is not how I saw this going
It was looking like Bob had settled on Trivino as the new 7th inning guy, so hopefully this puts the kibosh on that.
We didn’t get a great look because of the partial overcast but the shadows seem to have crossed home plate around 3:45. Worth noting for the rest of the week.
I saw something earlier about how McCullers was going to be tough because we were bad against breaking pitches this year, but it seems like the pitch we really can’t hit at all is a good fastball.
It was fun for a while anyway.
Comeback is going to be epic
What a shitty loss. Who knows what would have happened, but that was effectively a 4 run error by Semien.
Yeah, and it wasn’t even a tough play. Completely routine.
weldenken gave up 4 hits in a row. Yes, he wouldn’t have been in there for the next inning (maybe) but it’s a group effort.
And there were still a lot of runners that were wasted
And the comeback will be epic
Bad pitching, bad defense.
Good hitting for half the game.
In contrast to the last time the A’s played a Game 1 in that park, that one will be quickly forgotten.
I could only follow game intermittently and it was frustrating. Hopefully tomorrow brings fewer work meetings, a fresh game thread, and less frustration.
A’s in 4.
this is playing into our hands
People were starting to favor us-we had to get rid of that sort of positivity real quick.
Not to be a downer, but is Manaea giving anyone else “Loaiza ALCS game 2” vibes?
Well, given recent managing he won’t be left in long enough to give up 7 runs.
I’m worried about “Manaea 2019 WC Game” though. And also that the way the park was playing yesterday will not be good for him. Not great for what feels like a must-win.
OTOH, he did pitch 7 innings, 1 run against the Astros (in the Coliseum) just a few weeks ago.
FK crashing after game 1 loss is good karma.
Covita might be the best nickname yet.
That video of him up there on the balcony was really unsettling. He looked so unwell, even by his own standard.
This column doesn’t break much new ground, but the Hannah Arendt quote it leads with is right on the nose:
“Totalitarianism will not be satisfied to assert, in the face of contrary facts, that unemployment does not exist; it will abolish unemployment benefits as part of its propaganda.”
That is good.
Something I haven’t seen mentioned much is that pre-covid Trump was a famous germophove: hated handshakes, constantly using hand sanitizer, told people who were sneezing or coughing to leave the room. In that light, his insistence on not wearing masks, to the point of infecting so many people around him and possibly killing his own self, is a truly impressive commitment to the bit.
With Manaea for the A’s and LHP Framber Valdez for the *s, we have
– Pinder at 3B. This has been pretty much a strict platoon since he came back, and that seems to be working well.
– Piscotty in RF. I noted in the last round that he has been godawful for the last month (in between a couple of injuries). OTOH, Grossman has also been mostly bad recently (1-for-11 in the playoffs so far), so might as well give Piscotty a shot.
– Murphy at C. I may be alone in thinking that the small chance that Heim is partly responsible (even psychologically) for Manaea’s improvement is more valuable than what might be 1 or 2 plate appearances from Murphy. Plus it’s generally good not to overuse your star catcher to the point of wearing him down. (Another reason that I would have started Manaea later in the series: giving Murphy a day off later in the week might have been more valuable.) But there are obviously good arguments the other way, and one thing Bob has been consistently good at is sending the right lineup out there, so I will try to trust him on this one too.
Edit: And this makes me feel better
I don’t even like seeing two National League teams playing at Enron. I hope one of them does something unspeakable to the place.
how much you want to bet that at some point during the Marlins time on the field, someoene from atlanta banged on the trashcan in the dugout.
i said chris christie, right? you all heard me.
2020 is just tone deaf.
I was not a big VH fan during their peak, my HS years, but I find their stuff really holds up well now when I want a classic power rock song.
I’ve gone from listening to way too much of them as a teen, to thinking they were shlock, to really appreciating the power pop vibes of some of their early stuff. I never stopped thinking that Eddie was a total badass though.
But did you ever see him and valarie bertineli in the same place?
r<0.044
Over to you, Colin.
I don’t think I can get any tensor than I am right now.
The paper entitled “Primordial Non-Gaussianity” sounds raunchy.
That’s with our data! Also, the upcoming (eventually) BK18 paper is going to be dope.
Make sure you use the NPIPE Planck maps though … the main thing this paper shows is how much better they are than the previous releases.
I thought that the maps were only going to change at extremely low ell? I will go read the paper…
That’s certainly where the most visible differences are, but you only got r<0.06 with the previous Planck maps and the same BK data.
But couldn’t that difference be chalked up to inclusion of TT, EE, and BB over the full sky? (as opposed to all the BK analyses which only use BB on our small field)
True … so after the BK18 data are released we can scoop you again by adding the full Planck sky ;-)
