I Don’t think there are any relievers left,
Brett Anderson v Kikichi
Bassitt v Marco Gonzales
Mengden v TBA
The Mariners can’t seem to lose. This has all the hallmarks of a grim series leaving a bad tast going into 5 days without a baseball game.
1-9 The Mariners have hot bats that haven’t made an out against the A’s since 2018.
Our only hope is a natural disaster
Why are they still wearing those red caps?
no
specialty uniforms too
Why do you hate our freedoms?
devastating offense
franklin.solo
why are there things that are not reviewable?
the mariners can’t be stopped
How was that not an overturn? Chapman’s hand was clearly on the bag before the tag. Fucking New York. They hate our freedoms too.
ken and vince were perplexed
They were pissed.
I was watching the Mariners telecast and they had a super slo-mo where Chapman was clearly out.
With gray, damp and crappy Northwest weather, I’ll be heading for Seattle later today for a bonus A’s game tonight and then my regularly-scheduled game tomorrow afternoon.
8th day in a row for petit?
phegley has positive defensive value. Huh.
Ed that natural disaster prediction…not cool.
Next time use those future powers on the SuperLotto numbers.
you good?
Yeah. We felt the big one last night but no real impact at Casa de Aces.
we trust buchter with dee gordon?
this is going to go against the A’s
Grossman has been pretty tolerable over the last month or so.
And he’s become a really solid pinch hitter. SSS of course, 4 for 11, but he walks into the box like he has a plan, and patience.
Yay
From DFA to ASG. Variance, thy name is reliever,
RIP João Gilberto. What a legend.
so sad
Australia are trying to execute a wildly improbable comeback win relying on a batter on one leg …
Too soon?
Messi got red carded in the consolation game. Badass.
He lost his shit afterwards. I love it. Straight up called the Copa rigged for Brasil.
Thanks, and go As.
His chest-bumping contest with Medel that got them both tossed was hilarious. Like a couple of tatted up 14-year olds pretending they are going to fight.
The ref must have decided to send off Gabriel Jesus for nothing in the final to cover up said rigging, eh Leo?
Hes my wife’s favorite
there’s no perfect coverup without plausible deniability, i always say.
Oskar Blues G’Knight Imperial Red IPA 8.7 ABV 24 oz. $13.50. I’m on light rail so why not.
There’s a soccer doubleheader next door at the Seahawks place so a busy night in the neighborhood. “Colossus Cup”, it says Club America vs. River Plate followed by Chivas vs. Boca Juniors. A tough choice but I’ll stick with the A’s.
I feel like AV might have chosen differently.
i chose (and i still choose) rock n roll.
i’m beat tho.
LOL they are advertising The Who playing here on October 19. Not worried about a conflict with Mariners postseason games?
They won’t get fooled again.
I notice they haven’t added any banners in right field since the last time I was here. Or the time before that or a couple times before that either.
go to ebbets field flannels
I second that!
With Canha scratched Profar is in LF. Not Barreto?
Why are they wearing red caps again?
I guess they give each team a whole home series with them
Just dumb-looking on July 7, especially for the home nine with that semi-Pilots throwback look.
I’m curious why the A’s version doesn’t have the “‘s.” All the other caps use the primary logo outline.
We didn’t throw off the yolk of the British to use possesives
I havent looked at stats but man that 77 team had to start bad. All-star Wayne Gross.
They were 7-1 on tax day, and above .500 as late as June 2.
By the All Star break they had fallen to 39-51. Then the wheels came off, as they came out of the break with a 3-19 stretch on the way to 98 losses.
Gross wasn’t the only all star. Vida also made it in what turned out to be a mediocre season for him (14-19 record, 104 ERA+). The best player on the team by a mile was Mitchell Page, who didn’t get the nod.
A Custian Clout right there.
Cust came along just a bit too soon; he and Statcast would have been a fun combo.
That one was just a FKing line drive.
Barreto giving us great insight into the stat inflation of Vegas.
Around the Sound, Mariners Pound Hound
this is the true outcome. the mariners are unstoppable, I commend them on finally reaching the world series this year
I had to look to see how Wendelken got here. Glad I’m not getting Blackburned for the second straight trip. He sure didn’t last long.
I’m trying to figure out what happened there. Like, they called him up, but when he showed up in the clubhouse they realized who he was and immediately sent him back down?
instacart is the worst
That Oskar Blues G’Knight plus one clean, crisp, refreshing Oly are looking like the evening’s highlights.
Oh, go to piroskis on 3rd. I am seriously temptem to have them air lifted to me.
https://www.piroshkion3rd.com/pages/menu
Hours not compatible with this trip unfortunately.
The Dutch keeper is amazing.
Impressive for Netherlands to hold US to a scoreless first half, but it’s hard to see how the Orange can keep fending off so many good chances without mounting many of their own.
That save on Morgan was epic. She got really lucky on a couple of others.
Unrelatedly, and I’m sure I have commented on this before, why can’t J.P. Dellacamera shut up once in a while? I really do not need to hear “DRIVEN INTO THE BOX” every time someone crosses a ball. This is not hockey.
They have cans of Rainier Lager at many of the stands, but where’s the Green Death of our youth when you really want one?
USA USA
Olson good.
That’s what happens when you take some guy who was about #28 on the depth chart at the start of the season and say “Oooh opener!”
Get a brain, Maroners.
I’m not convinced there is any useful opener combination beyond Stanek-Yarbrough.
Good decision, Dee.
Hoping for a quick hook today. Mengden isn’t inspiring any confidence.
Get off the field, Soaker!
Double IPA is a helluva drug.
This is scary.
That hit might draw a flag in an NFL game.
Marisnick had a clear lane to the outside and would’ve been safe. Instead he deliberately dove headfirst into Lucroy’s head. That should be a fine and suspension.
Yeah that was outrageous. He looked genuinely distraught afterwards, so probably it wasn’t deliberate? Sure looked that way.
They changed the rule for a reason.
This is how I got two concussions in no trucking the catcher middle school and high school ball. \
In addition to a suspension and fine, they should be made to forfeit the run and finish the game like a tied rainout.
The run was overturned on review for illegal hitting the catcher. So at least there’s that. Should have resulted in an ejection along with the suspension and fine. And whatever suspension that is, it should be the length of however long Lucroy is out.
Should be longer than Lucroy is out
Giving the Astros color commentator the benefit of the doubt on his insane statement that the collision couldn’t be avoided — since he may have only said the play in real time, would be nice if he issued some type of correction.
I hate Buchter
Yeah.
This has an ominous feel.
A’s hitters could stand to return from their early departure for the break right here.
Was Laureano’s ball clearly fair? I initially thought foul and as best I could see on the scoreboard it looked foul too.
Looked pretty clearly foul to me, Glen, and Ray as well.
Ken and Vince too.
Vince certainly felt it was foul even upon replay. I, limited to only to that opinion, would err on the side of then thinking it was fair.
The only way it could have been considered fair is if they saw it graze the foul pole.
Not remotely excited that Chapman is in the HR Derby.
Same…everyone talks about Cespedes winning the derby but I just remember how annoying it was that he missed a few games right after the break with an injury.
The last six weeks have been a helluva lot of fun! Outside of the two series against the fucking Blue Jays, and to a lesser extent against these Mariners, not a lot to complain about.
50-41 at the break is pretty darn good considering everything.
I’d like to think things are closer to 51-41, based on where things are at with that Tigers game.
The problem here continues to be the pitching and particularly the overuse of the bullpen due to the weak rotation. They are relying on Brett Anderson to go every fifth day and that is always going to end the same way. Fiers and Mengden are journeymen and Bassitt continues to be more potential than performance. Montas was a big part of the solution but so much for that. The guys who were supposed to be “the same as a great acquisition at the deadline” are all falling over again while rehabbing. The talent is certainly there in the starting lineup and if most of the current pitchers are healthy in February I like their chances in 2020, but I’m not willing to trade anything significant at the deadline for an upside I see as being another dice roll in a wild card game on the road.
Id trade for a controllable rotation asset.
boyd?
Maybe?
BAUER
Thanks, and go As.
yeah id be more willing to part with prospects for him than someone who has one year of high level of production
Put the sign down, Soaker.
I thought they hated transplants from the bay area.
I think I’ve mentioned here before that the Pacific Northwest is under consideration for post-Tahoe life in a few years. If the Bay Area just becomes an impossibility for the A’s I wouldn’t object to Portland. I think there’s probably less political will in Portland to get an MLB team than there is in Oakland to keep the A’s, and the Portland ballpark has just as many obstacles as Howard Terminal getting past pretty pictures to steel and concrete. So I don’t really expect to see an MLB team there in my lifetime.
USA Men vs. Mexico for the NorthCentralAmerCaribbean title about to kick on FS1 if you’re into that sort of thing.
Manaea scheduled to pitch 3 innings for Stockton tonight. Cross your fingers.
He’s working on things.
Ouch. I guess the good news is he didnt strain a lat. Bad news is maybe he should have?
Yeah I don’t think Chapman is getting past Vlad Jr.
Pops didn’t help him much with the pitches.
I wasn’t paying any particular attention to the game but would just say I hope never to see the A’s wear those clown caps in real life.
CHapman drew a walk and Hendriks K’d some guys, but the highlight by far for me was yet another Giants pitcher giving up yet another All Star Game home run.
RIP Bulldog.
RIP torn.
That one confused me when my friend told me. Also RIP the actress that played Violet Beauregard. So there is a very weird group of 3.
Article for Bouton that I couldnt link to from the phone last night: awww shitfuck
I hadn’t realized before wading through the latest juiced ball imbroglio that MLB actually now owns Rawlings, the manufacturer. Manfredjensen’s denials ring awfully hollow.
Call me naive, but I find both parts of the explanation – that manufacturing improvements could inadvertently produce a more symmetric ball, and that the more symmetric ball would carry farther (and possibly also lead to pitches that move more predictably) – completely plausible.
I agree with that as far as it goes. But surely MLB tests bounce levels and drag coefficients and such, especially given previous juiced ball years. It’s hard to believe they didn’t see this coming whenever the balls were delivered, and then consciously chose not to require new batches.
That’s also plausible, though I think this specific change wouldn’t affect bounce level and would only affect drag when the ball is rotating, so it might depend on how they were measuring things.
But, yes, now that they’ve gotten to the point of admitting that the ball can make a difference, even without its specs (composition, how tight the yarn is wound, etc.) officially changing, the question is whether they will do something to try to normalize it.
And I seem to remember Manfred already put out that the changes are within spec limits. If they wanted to make an adjustment it would have been easy to start saying “we may need to look at tightening these limits, etc”.
Would a more symmetric ball also explain some of the velocity increases we have seen? Or would the effect be too small compared to other forces?
listening to merdith wills interviews it doesn’t seem so. the didtance traveled is to short for pitchers, besides, they measure the “speed” not in average, but in MPH at a point near the release point
thanks for the info
“Rooted” in Oakland indeed.
I have a feeling the A’s just gained a lot of fans down under.
I’m imagining the phone conversation:
Newspaper ad rep: Are you sure this is the text you want in the ad?
A’s person: Absolutely. Why do you ask?
Newspaper ad rep: Oh (giggle), no reason in particular, just double checking.
A’s person: OK, thanks, run that in tomorrow’s issue please.
Newspaper ad rep: Yes sir, will do. Good bye. (hangs up)
Newspaper ad rep: (rolls on floor with tears streaming down face)
The combination of colours and lettering make an Australian fan-base a no-brainer for the A’s to begin with – it’s always amazed me they haven’t made a bigger play for that market.
I love the “Filed to: International Juvenilia” at the top.
Between Balfour, Blackley and Hendriks we must lead the lead in Aussies last 10 years, if not all time.
You missed this pool of chunder (Google it) as well as this guy. 5 out of the 14 of those who have appeared in MLB games since 2010. Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!
I vaguely remember the former. I looked up the game thread for the latter’s sole appearance as an Athletic (which, in fact also featured Hughes).
That was Peak Kraut, garnering 290 comments for an April shutout loss to the White Sox. Rich Thompson was not mentioned, though it looks like his appearance coincided with my “You know it’s bad when Fosse is sighing” comment. There is also the obligatory gonealookin comment about just giving up on 2012.
Jemile Weeks, Kila Ka’aihue, and Hughes all in the lineup.
We won the division that year.
FDLS! I thought he was going to be a big deal.
Also seeing Pedro Figueroa in the box score makes me sad. I distinctly remember him blowing out his arm a couple years later and walking off the mound against the A’s. He never made it back (second TJS).
That was the final MLB appearance for FDLS. As noted in the thread he didn’t retire a batter in his final 3 appearances. Fittingly the last batter he faced reached on an error by Hughes. I remembered the name “Rich Thompson” only when I was looking at the list of Aussies, but I noticed without looking anything up that FSU had omitted Hughes from his list, as his .750 fielding percentage with the A’s permanently imprinted him in my mind.
The last time I was excited about the A’s postseason chances before late August was 1990. Well, maybe 2014.
