Sounds like he got a mini version, which was nice.
What happens when this Molina retires? Is the next generation of Molinas ready yet?
the last of the molinas
Bassitt is not making this look easy.
What the hell did he spend the off day doing, laying asphalt or digging ditches? He looked totally wiped out after the first batter. Now he looks like Paul Newman after a week in the hole.
Alarmingly accurate
His dirt was in Boss Melvin’s base path:
Oh no Ramon
Went from radio, with Ken calling Yadier Molina a future first-ballot HOFer, to TV with Glen expressing puzzlement that Omar Vizquel has not been inducted (“He had 400 more hits than Ozzie Smith!”).
I’m not sure putting WAR on the scoreboard is helping.
There is a big divergence between Molina’s career bWAR (39.2) and fWAR (53.3). I assume this is all about catcher defense, and I don’t know which one is right (possibly neither).
Throw FKing strikes to the FKing pitcher.
Good double-switch
Good pinch-hitter
Man, this NL style managing is so complicated.
Getting Profar out of the game is one of the best arguments I’ve seen for NL ball.
Pindered and Semiened!
A Semien in St. Louis
This Cardinals pitcher pinch ran for Molina last week and got picked off second base to end the game.
Pitcher pinch hitting! I’m listening – does he have the leg kick in his swing?
No, pretty controlled.
Come on Lou.
Lately I just want to give him a hug.
Whereas when Hendriks is struggling I want to slap him, cause I figure that’s what he’d prefer.
Yay Lou!
I’ll confess to not being all that USA USA about the Women’s World Cup, but the utter dismissive disdain with which Rapinoe said “no, we’re not going to the FKing White House” has me enamored.
That is fantastic.
That’s interesting, I as a very casual almost agnostic soccer fan have been actually quite excited about the USWNT this time around. I’ve watched every game live. Can’t quite explain why.
Had the ancillary effect of getting me to even watch the US men again T&T the other day.
I think I need to adapt my thinking about the USWNT now that the less likeable personalities (Solo, Wambach) have left the scene.
Be sure to tune in Sunday night when the men take on the mighty Curaçao in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup!
The quarter finals are going to be brutal in the current heatwave … 90F at 10pm sucks.
Its far better than celebrating a 9-0 goal like an asshat
you spelled “america” wrong.
it’s a tortured analogy in that piece, but it’s true that she gives off uncomfortable.
like, whatever you think of her personality, your feelings are less a couch and more a church pew. in less than 90 minutes, you’re gonna need to get up and stretch a bit.
Thats a really tortured article.
What is the “unflinchingly ugly” in American diversity that she represents?
hey there
Hi Ed! Hows the future?
The new All Star voting system is so byzantine that I can’t even bring myself to mildly care about it.
MLB updated its app so that All Star Voting is the first page you land on when you open it up. Irritating.
I fundamentally don’t understand why it is so hard to find a game recap video in the Atbat app. It’s maddening
Wainwright got screwed at least twice on that walk to Taylor.
Got one back on strike three to Khris.
Got another one back on strike three to Canha.
A highly Kulpable zone so far.
NL ball is dumb.
I don’t mind the opportunities for (mis/over)-managing, but it’s just so artificial to have those chances caused by a mandatory shit batter in the 9th lineup spot. If the active rosters expanded to 28 or 30 and AL teams had more incentive to pinch hit and double switch for light-hitting catchers and 2Bmen, I’d be OK with that.
Beau!
This is the best Mengden in quite some time.
He does much better with the waxed moustache.
He does much better when he throws strikes.
It may not come to it, but I don’t know if I want to pinch hit for Mengden this inning and ask the pen to throw another 4 innings tonight.
it’s a terrible choice. He shouldn’t go another time through the order, but the pen is not inspiring.
Point mooted
I might be tempted to now roll the dice and see If Mengden can get 1 more out, etc.
I’m starting to think the Cardinals are just bad at hitting.
That is one seriously blingy chain Ozuna is sporting out there.
Get swept, morans!
Pretty impressive back-to-back outings from Petit, Soria, and Hendriks.
Mengden seems to have done just fine without an opener.
Given the staff rightnow I think we are done with the opener as it is currently constructed (of course after typing this we will use one the next 5 games..).
I do think we have a potential to try some sort of 3 inning/3 inning/ bullpen mash up with all of the arms we want to keep on low innings and pitch counts. But that would be better with an expanded roster.
it’ll be like getting terry forester at the deadline!
#fattubofgoo
For a minute I had my mid 80’s Braves relief pitchers mixed up and was going to make a joke about hitting HR’s in the 18th inning. RIP Rick Camp, who I just learned through Wikipedia eventually became an embezzler-so that’s nice.
I’ll reiterate my suggestion that this would be a great way to use Luzardo while he’s coming back to full strength. And Slusser has already said that she expects he’ll be up soon after the break.
Totally agree. I would think some combo of Luzardo and Manaea/Puk/Cotton (if he recovers) would do the trick. And if they can get to say 4 innings each you keep the bullpen fresh enough that the roster spots dont hurt as much.
My hope of seeing Manaea this year has dwindled with him having the dreaded “oblique soreness” now.
Luzardo/Puk would be a fun tandem. Too bad they aren’t opposite handed.
I was thinking of something more mundane like Luzardo/Mengden. Of course, that was before Mengden turned into an ace who will give us six scoreless on his own every time out.
Feeling pretty good/bad about my “they are going to do everything they can to ratfuck the census” prediction in the post-election thread.
With any luck (yeah right), it’ll backfire and royally throw off the census data and fuck over red states who will then lose Congressional and EC power. They won’t expend the energy getting all their people counted while we will.
Yeah, the SCOTUS ruling was essentially that the administration’s justification was too farcical a lie for even this court to countenance. Come back with a better lie and we’ll allow it.
Meanwhile, they’ll just do a bunch of other shit under the radar, and by the time people figure out what they did, it will be too late.
Nutty transcript of emergency telephonic hearing in the district court to figure out why the president is tweeting the opposite of what the DOJ and Commerce Department told everyone yesterday about the citizenship question being dropped. The government lawyers are completely at sea, and they don’t even seem to have discussed the situation with each other before the call.
the comments of the second government lawyer is chilling
Yeah, that’s the Trump appointee, who had obviously just gotten off the phone with Barr. Not good.
these guys really think you can just wait until mid june, send a flyer out to kinkos and mail one to every address in the country
Not kinkos, but a private mail farm that will do it for super expensive and toss money into the GOP/Trump coffers next year.
If I’m the judge. we proceed with discovery
So basically “please give us time to come up with a less flimsy excuse”?
Yes. And we get a complete do-over on it so you have to pretend our original flimsy excuse didn’t happen. And that thing about needing to print the forms now? Forget about that too.
“new”
these people love spending money they don’t have
In other words “While you’re being legally clever, I recognize that you’re full of shit, so stop trying to delay things and get on with it.”
Hmmm…
good. they will actually fuck it up
Huh, that’s Phil Neville there in a waistcoat coaching the England women.
Apparently the waistcoat is now a contractual obligation for managing Ingerlund.
They looked strong today. Still, any team with a star player named Bronze seems destined for the consolation game.
Prescient as ever.
When I first saw him, his back was to the camera, and I thought “is Southgate coaching the women too?”
I think I permanently damaged some Giants fan friendships by bringing up Buster Posey’s .296 on base percentage.
Rays-Twins headed to the 15th inning, no runs scored since the top of the second.
On to the 17th…
18th…
3 for Tampa in top of 18th. Hoping for 3 Twins runs in their half.
Home plate ump was in “let’s get the hell out of here” mode in that bottom half.
Policy positions or history aside, Kamala is running circles around the rest of the folks on stage tonight. Future debaters should take note.
Biden insisting that integration through busing should have been left as a local decision is just unbelievably awful.
His game plan seems to be running right in the primaries so as to be electable in the general. I just don’t see that strategy winning this time. He just seems badly out of touch.
Even if I didn’t already think so, tonight’s performance would have convinced me that he needs to drop out.
Agreed, I’m seriously starting to think she could be the best bet to win.
i hate her sooooo much
Familiarity breeds contempt. I bet if you lived in South Bend you’d hate Mayor Pete, in NY Sen Gilly, in CO Gov Homebrew McModerate. And you wouldn’t be wrong.
Though I agree with the general principal, in this case I believe Ed has some first- (or at least second-)hand reasons.
I get it, in my case I’d vote for Satan if he was running vs State Sen Skinner
i will happily vote for her in the general. I will contribute to GOTV funds in battleground states, I will not fly the flag, however
But lots of those people deserve contempt.
Homebrew McModerate turned his state into frackopolis
Gillibrand touted getting an A rating from the NRA in her campaigns and takes $$$ from wall st.
Pete is really fucking up the whole race relations thing that will be a pretty important part of the job of being the next president. And when you are the mayor of a small city and running for president you really cant be not great at your current job.
Sure, and that’s my point. No candidate passes a strict ideological purity test. Elizabeth Warren (my current top choice) and her culturally appropriative claim to Native heritage; Bernie and the entrenched sexism in his 2016 campaign operation. In the absence of a perfect choice most people tend to vilify most the one that they know most closely.
No candidate is perfect. I don’t expect them to be.
Ive worked on campaigns that took noxious positions on Israel to appease AIPAC, had taken really bad immigration positions (though in 2006 the landscape was a little different), and were fine with guns.
Harris has pursued bad policy often as DA and AG. I can’t say that about Warren and can rarely say that about Bernie despite their other failing.
Harris had a good night last night, no doubt about it. I just worry that she will be like Obama, personally good while not changing the deeply broken status quo.
Warren is my top choice. I don’t think Sanders has an implementable plan for the great things he proposes.
Sanders has all the drawbacks that FSU pointed out and the guns thing
While I do like some of the grand vision of Sanders, can we not have a candidate who’s older than 70? The most depressing bit of trivia I know is that Clinton, W, and Trump share a birth year. The solution is not to go older.
olds suck, which is why I was on board with the Pete thing until he botched the race stuff recently
Olds Suck, Vote Bernie
Best of the Olds last time.
Best of the Old White Dudes this time.
Bernie has always been a better than the alternative candidate.
I have no illusion of Sanders being able to get anything done. But him getting elected will shift the Overton window so much farther to the left that it is likely worth it anyway.
I don’t care about conservative positions on guns from someone representing a rural state at a time when there was no motivation on the left for gun control. it made sense as an issue to punt.
That’s just ignorant.
When was the post Brady/Assault weapons ban fervor on the left to do gun control?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_States
Also if you believe that crap about the Overton window…
Ive seen medicare for all go from being a pipe dream to standard dem party policy in two years.
Look at how AOC moved the green new deal into common parlance.
Look how Clinton had to operate in the Reagan window.
Its real.
I agree. That’s why it’s lame to excuse Bernie’s gun stance as “other people weren’t advocating hard then”
Its not like he was out there whipping votes in opposition to gun control. After 2012 he basically voted how you wanted anyway.
Furthermore, guns aren’t even in my top 5 issues that I want to be addressed by a 2020 Democratic President:
1 Corruption
2 Climate change
3 Income inequality
4 Health care
5 Immigration
And the left was largely resigned to letting it go. Even the giffords/bloomberg efforts were rather half assed until parkland
Dude.
First, Bernie voted against the Brady Bill, so talking about “post-Brady…fervor on the left” is irrelevant.
Second, he didn’t just not support gun control measures like background checks, he voted to affirmatively shield gun manufacturers from lawsuits.
Third, there was a ton of “motivation” or “fervor” or whatever for gun control on the left throughout the 90s and 00s. Just because you are too young to remember it or didn’t care about it doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.
I’m glad that Bernie has come around on this now that he is trying to win national democratic primaries rather than Vermont general elections, but trying to rewrite history rather than just admitting that Bernie, like most politicians, has taken bad positions for bad reasons does little to endear me to the cause.
I had forgotten how fun these goalpost-moving contests that go too far for FK nesting are. Glad you’re back, buddy.
+1 on that last bit especially.
Please explain to me what meaningful efforts I’m missing.
There were feeble attempts to renew the assault weapons ban after it expired and the Heller decision and nothing much else until Newtown unless I’m missing something.
Bernie voted for the assault weapons ban each time I’ve seen it come up. Was the liability a bad vote? Definitely. He’s taken several.
But the idea that it is particularly relevant when you aren’t going to get 60 votes for gun control perplexes me.
It’s funny, I’m not like that at all. I give Kamala a bonus because it would kick ass to have a San Francisco/Oakland person as President. I’ll probably give Gavin the same bonus when he inevitably runs.
Gavin is a waste of the oxygen he breathes.
And he killed high speed rail like an asshole.
i hate him sooooo much
For Halloween SLF was a vampire in a suit named “gavin Gruesome” the year he first ran for mayor
I worked my ass off for Gonzalez
my god, breed was so scared of gonzalez she almost picked someone that hasn’t done public defender work for 20 years and is probably in her late 60s to replace adachi
his prop b and nadar escapades wouldn’t wear well today
which is why he would need a win like becoming the public defender
I remember that, but not why. Can you explain in a way that those of us looking at her from afar, in the big picture way that is a presidential campaign, can make sense of? Like, I have a friend who dealt with Hickenlooper in CO on policy issues and said flat out that he talks a good game but was duplicitous in his dealings, anything to boost his reputation. That I get as a legit reason to not support him. (Usual caveat that I’d vote for him over Trump. (UCTIVFHOT?))
For a start there is her record as DA, she pursued policies that hurt struggling people. she went full out drug war, knowing it was wrong. Not to mention her endorsement of jail time for parents of truant kids. To her credit, although being for the death penalty, she did not seek it under great pressure to do so on the killer of an officer.
As AG she she refused to persue savings and loan people (to her credit she did stay out a federal settlement and got a better settlement). there was a complaint drafted against Steve Mnucian by lawyers that worked with SLF and they were told to stand down. the case was 97% worked up ready to file.
there was an settlement from Wells fargo that was monitored by SLF’s office, she found non compliance and reported it up the chain, she ultimately shut down the investigation (harris or her deputies)
Mnuchin donated $2000 to her Senate bid after her office declined to prosecute.
That would be the attack ad Id run in every early state.
it’d be hilarious to hear trump then turn it around and call her corrupt.
Thanks for your additional comments.
i mean, come on. take your win
ok, that may be a mentionable drawback of VAR. (except it’s not VAR’s fault.) messi just stopped on a semi-viable play in the box because he thought there’d be a hand-ball called in review. there wasn’t.
Wait, right now? Why is this game so early in the day?
There was a notable VAR thing last night in Brazil-Paraguay where they changed penalty + yellow card to free kick + red card, because they decided it was outside the box and a last-man foul. It took forever too.
did take forever. and the whole time i didn’t know which punishment i preferred.
Might have been borderline for a different team. But Paraguay with 10 and Paraguay with 11 seem like almost the same thing.
You really love VAR now.
who’s this foyth guy?? i may love him too.
Now I see why they played earlier in the day. The second game is delayed because the Chile bus got stuck in São Paulo rush hour traffic.
Khris Davis day-to-day with a sore left hand after being HBP yesterday.
god dammit.
every time chile wins. someone feels emboldened to worsen their haircut.
And get a few more neck tattoos.
I was marveling at Vidal’s dome just now. The shave is so perfect.
Meanwhile the scorer of Brazil’s first goal in the final has a star of david under his adam’s apple, and a cross next to his eye.
coexist.
Always disappointing when my masculine ideal Edinson Cavani goes out of a tournament.
I miss Diego Forlan.
Thanks, and go As.
This Haiti-Canada Gold Cup quarterfinal is better than all the Copa quarters combined.
