Site Down for most of the day, back on after a horrible outing by Fiers. He is earning that non tender from late last year.
Everyone seems excited about Edwin Jackson.

Nice win, britches
This is the bullpen we expected
Fiers cannot dig a hole so deep that our bats cannot fill it!
Glen and Ray don’t think they’re playing tonight
I’m hoping for a delay until just after the Warriors game ends.
This would be the third day in a row for both Trivino and Treinen so in that sense a rainout is to the A’s benefit. Although with Estrada starting in that ballpark, not sure using those guys would ever come under consideration anyway. It wouldn’t be a horrible idea to keep Brett on turn tomorrow and hold Estrada back until they return to the Coliseum.
Downside of a rainout, looking at the schedule, would be a likely June doubleheader in Arlington.
Can they do a doubleheader tomorrow? A’s are off on Monday, Rangers have an evening game at home.
I don’t believe they could do a day-night doubleheader under the CBA (A’s cannot play a night game on the road before a scheduled off-day at home).
Anyway, usually if a team is making multiple trips into a city, the preference is to schedule the makeup for a subsequent series. Announcing a game two months in advance is better for ticket sales than 12 hours in advance. Also there’s the issue of getting the 26th player into town for a day game tomorrow.
1:05 and 8:05 on June 8 (the night game was already scheduled for a late start due to Fox network restrictions). Talk about an endless day and night in Texas.
There has to be a better date for the two them to play than fucking June.
But…I was looking to add one more road trip (in addition to Pittsburgh), so guess what. My Southwest and Hertz points accounts are lighter now, and the HoJo is cheap and within walking distance of the ballpark. Four ball games and I’ll be able to fit in a tour of Jerry World as well, there and back in a bit over 72 hours. The Saturday night game is the Adrian Beltre #29 retirement night (with bobblehead of course) so tickets were already a little scarce for that one.
Boo, Jerry World tours not available that weekend (set-up for and playing of Mexican National Team vs. Ecuador on Sunday night). Oh well, there must be some other way to kill Sunday pregame in Arlington. (?)
According to Glen the “Texas Live” part of the new construction next door is already open for biz.
That would be “Texas Live!” featuring such eateries as the Miller Tavern and Beer Garden. If you click on that link, what’s really awesome about the photo is that the TVs above the bar are showing the dreaded DirecTV 771 Signal Loss error, which is the one I used to get when the dish got too heavily covered by snow.
For good eating in the neighborhood, down the street from the ballpark but not part of Texas Live!, Redneck Heaven looks like a great choice. The blurb on Google Maps describes it as a “branch of a sports bar chain featuring Southern-style pub grub and waitresses in skimpy outfits”.
I had considered that Arlington weekend previously but an issue was, what to do all day Saturday before an 8 p.m. first pitch? The long scenic walk I would do in a place like Seattle isn’t an option. But with the fourth game, the option “sit in the sun watching the A’s and lose 5 pounds in the process” became available so I jumped at it. The only significant free time left is Sunday before a 2 p.m. first pitch; maybe there’s a Texas School Book Depository tour or something.
I’m surprised you’re skipping Wrigley. Already done that one?
Not recently, but I’ve been there some years ago. I used to travel with a Giants fan/Deadhead buddy so we did something like Giants @ Cubs and Dead shows on the same trip. Have also been both to the ancient Comiskey Park, which appeared on the verge of physical collapse in its final years, and the current White Sox place. I’ve also been to Fenway a long time ago, and TBH some places like Boston, New York and Chicago are just too damned expensive both to attend the games and to stay in the city. That’s a major reason why recent A’s trips have been places like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, St. Petersburg, Miami (in June) and Pittsburgh and Arlington this year.
Hey, it was Dead night at Wrigley on Wednesday. They handed out pretty cool looking 7 inches.
Heh, Chris Davis had 3 hits, 4 RBIs in a win against the Sawx.
Slump-busters!
He made a lot of good contact in A’s series. I think .210 and a trade to the Yankees seems achievable.
WTF I’ve already missed most of the final round of the Masters? It looks like a wild finish though.
Tiger turning back clock 15 years, quickly taking all suspense out of it.
The final half hour of the telecast needed violins and harps. It is a great moment no doubt, but good grief Jeter never had the deity worship laid on a tenth that thick.
Jim Nantz tried so hard to make Tiger cry.
Our defense in the first inning leaves something to be desired.
laureano seems to think he is plastic man
JFC
sigh
yeah, ken, it seems like its the end of the inning
I was discounting Brett’s dismal but ancient history in Arlington but it looks like it still applies.
JFC
thank goodness for jeff mathis
I wouldn’t be ecstatic about having Hunter Pence hitting in the #3 spot at this stage of his career but they’re pretty lefthanded-hitting oriented in the middle of their lineup.
I endorse the policy of scoring in every inning when bret anderson is pitching
Batting practice against Sampson, who must be thinking “If I had my way I would tear this whole building down.”
two errors?
I think we found a hole in brett’s game
he is talking about golf again
good god
They have this allegedly awesome deep bullpen but somehow there are only two pitchers out there Bob can have any confidence in. 75 wins will be a challenge if they can’t win unless Trivino and Treinen get 6 of the outs.
Wendelken has been good.
Soria, Petit, Buchter, Hendriks, Rodney … ugh.
3/8 is still not good enough.
@nevermoor is there anything we can do about the site outages? They seem to be more frequent and longer lasting now. Happy to contribute some dough if needed.
I needed to vent about how much Soria sucks.
Haven’t seen nevermoor post here in a while, so he might not be aware of it. Does someone want to reach out to him irl?
Update: it looks like his last comment was posted back on Nov 30 and he is no longer in the list of users? Or maybe he just doesn’t show up there because he is in a different category for site admin?
As I said on the 10th anniversary I still enjoy participating on this site, but based on the number of active users I don’t think more money would be an efficient solution.
My recollection from a long-ago tech discussion is that the software process isn’t very efficient. Hypothesis is that the interaction of that process with a large 10-year-old database is causing the site to exceed daily limits of the hosting company frequently.
If that has any kernel of truth in it, a solution to keep the thing going might be to save the full database somewhere, then delete the oldest XX% of the content from the active database. To me, the current era of the A’s started the day they DFA’d Trevor Plouffe and called up Matt Chapman, and everything before that is ancient history anyway.
What’s weird is that it seems to go down pretty much at random, not necessarily when there is a lot of activity (even by our standards).
i can pay or lose my comments about vince not telling me what is happening on the field at the moment.
Comedy gold as it was, I am sure I can recreate that feeling.
Soria was just so awful yesterday. Like Jim Johnson-level awful.
I was watching the Blue Jays game tonight, trying to figure out who plays for them now in anticipation of their series in Oakland. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has been sent to the minors. I was speculating last week about Profar having “The Thing” about short throws, particularly after one in Baltimore that Kendrys practically had to call a fair catch on. Gurriel does in fact have it.
To replace Gurriel Jr. on the roster, Eric Sogard was placed on the 40-man roster and then called up.
Also in that Jays game, this wonderful bit of TOOTBLANnery. The score bug is correct; the count was 2-2.
the runner, who I assume is dave henderson, didn’t think it was ball four but let himself be fooled
Blake Swihart seems like an upgrade over Hundley/Herrmann. Career .274/.328/.406 vs. RHP. He isn’t going to waivers; somebody will trade for him.
Good thing Estrada didn’t start in Texas, he might have gotten lit up in that park.
At exactly the same crappy moment the Astros hit their slam, Vegas scored their 2nd goal.
We missed seeing the Sharks in Vegas, fortunately as it turns out. But we did have a free night to go to an Aviators game. Nice new ballpark, although the second level is all club and/or group rental, so we didn’t get a chance to go up there. We did get to see Seth Brown hit 3 dingers, and the bat dog was able to perform his/her duties unimpeded by the umpire. Pretty good food selections, too. Based on all the new march being worn, plus all the VGN gear in town, it is clear Vegas is embracing their new sports franchises. If you’re taking a trip to Vegas its worth getting out there (Summerlin) to catch a game.
Yes, I’m driving down next week; staying downtown on Fremont Street, not out there in the burbs. The forecast has high temperatures at 91°F on Wednesday and 94°F on Thursday which is why I wanted to check Aviators games off the list in April.
The temps are one thing, the wind another. Jeebus it blows there. We were just at the Plaza at Main & Fremont. Beware of the construction site on the northeast corner of that intersection, across from the Plaza. They work pretty much 24/7, lots of lights and noise. There’s a great breakfast/lunch place called eat at 7th & Carson. Banger brewery not bad, didn’t make it to Tenaya.
I paid up some in Pittsburgh, literally across the street from the ballpark and a short walk over the bridge to downtown, so this one is the Four Queens at $50/night. That’s $50 total. I hate it when the headline price is $29 or whatever but then by the time you click through to the payment page they’ve added the “resort fee”, taxes, etc. and you’re up to $85. Even the sad-sack Sands in Reno, where I sometimes spend the night before a 6 a.m. flight, has a resort fee, and of course it has gone steadily up past $10 towards $20. Re the noise, construction might actually offset the usual din from Fremont Street itself, and since it’s a driving trip I can throw my white noise-generating fan in the car.
All places in Nevada in the immediate lee of the mountains can have hellacious wind. It does usually stop blowing right at sunset.
Love Fremont St. By far the seediest Vegas casino I ever played is the El Cortez. Would love to hear confirmation that the table waitresses still ask “Can the El Cortez buy you a drink?”
I only go to Fremont
I call it Parking Lot With A Mayor St
Thanks, and go As.
hey o!
(and a youth sports complex)
Hot Take: Unless this Brown kid is horrible at first base, he should be in Morales’ roster spot.
Every time this year I’ve posted something positive about the Sharks they’ve promptly started sucking. Really streaky year. So let me just say now that they’ve just plain sucked lately.
On the plus side, Trivino and Treinen get another night off.
good thing we got hermann hudley estrada and grossman instead of adding pollock kuekel and grandal to a playoff team
Wait, sign good players? That’s crazy talk.
And Soria, Fiers (re-signed as free agent), Rodney (option exercised), and Profar (trade).
Grossman (somehow) has a +.5 bWAR. Herrmann of course hasn’t played. The other 6 are all below replacement level so far, combining for -3 bWAR. So it’s not just that they didn’t spend money to make the team better; the money they did spend has actively made it worse.
Someone on twitter made the same list about an hour before I did, and rightly also included Anderson (+.6).
Irony is dead.
Yes this worked out very well for Abrams in Nicaragua, and early Chavez Venezuela. Really his portfolio suggests he does much better keeping thugs in power than he does removing them.
It would be nice if our immoral hubristic monsters were at least also competent.

Well it ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none.
I don’t understand the “let the kids play” slogan. Is it about letting young players act like jerks?
In regards to which sport?
Thanks, and go As.
Baseball
oh IDK then.
Thanks, and go As.
The A’s may have to indemnify Union Pacific for train derailments?
Drunk fans dumping stuff on the tracks?
City/Spurs … WTF
This is fun.
Thanks, and go As.
Bonkers.
Barcelona/Liverpool will be the real final.
I wouldn’t write off Ajax.
Maybe they should have a rematch…saturday
Boot-Edge-Edge. Boot-Edge-Edge. Rolls right off the tongue.
Sounds like the name of some militant and self-righteous punk subculture that splintered off from another punk subculture called just Boot Edge.
nah. that’s butt-itch-itch.
Disqualified
Yeah I can overlook the lack of a platform but Phish cannot stand.
Just about the only thing I like about him.
Being from South Bend you’d think Umphrey’s would be his pick.
The writer of that article labels Tweeprise a “deep cut”, which nobody who knows the least bit about Phish would do.
You get what you pay for.
Thanks for trying to pitch through it buddy.
Not surprising. (This is from this spring, talking about last year.)
5.64 ERA in 2018, 6.85 so far in 2019, but at least he’s a gamer.
The team lost all five of your starts, but whatever.
Yes, hopefully the younger guys did not in fact pay attention.
didn’t define which team he was helping
Take three or four months if you need it, Marco. Please.
As long as you have a Brett Anderson exception, Susan.
How about jokes about better ways to have spent $4 million? “For one year of Estrada we could’ve outfitted all our minor league teams with lumbar braces”
Estrada’s 4M and Rodney’s 5M might actually buy a real actual baseball player.
Thanks, and go As.
I don’t know, real actual baseball players are kind of expensive. That might of gotten us half a season of one.
for $4M you could have paid Mike v and not had marco estrada
The title of this thread, when reproduced in a Chrome tab, keeps making me think I have 18 unread items of something somewhere.
I didn’t even notice until earlier today that we never made a thread for this Astros series. So far it has not merited one anyway.
me too. the poster should fix it, or someone should start a new one
The Raiders don’t play any games at the Coliseum between September 15 and November 3. So if the A’s get into postseason the field ought to be all right. Only thing is, the Raiders play consecutive games on September 9 and 15 with the A’s on the road, meaning the football stands will be left deployed for an entire week during the hottest weather of the year, meaning the baseball field will be horrible for the final homestand.
I hate that Montas quick pitch thing, which I assume is part of Santiago Casilla’s legacy. He has great stuff, doesn’t need to be cute like Casilla to get batters out, just make a quality pitch.
Chapman > Bregman
Fact
The A’s are on just regular television for me. Yay!
always great to see you here among the mellow fellows.
let’s dance.
I rarely listen to the television audio. Every time they put Braden on camera there’s some clownish sideshow which obviously has nothing to do with baseball analysis.
I keep saying it. Braden’s trying to be at a 9, when really he needs to dial it back to a 6.
Thanks, and go As.
if the sun refuse to shine.
Yep. He was far superior back when he was doing color for national games. Partly because he mellowed his shtick for it.
I’m ok with the walk to Bregman.
Absolutely
We’ll see if Wendelken has blown past Soria for the #3 slot. Signs point to yes.
Looks like they may be hoping for 3 innings from a rested Trivinen.
I get it tonight with the off days and the 0-4 record against the Astros, but it highlights how badly FKd they are when one of those guys gets hurt.
If Semien wants to put up a .390 OBP and a .500 SLG now I’m cool with that.
Need another Reddick GIDP.
FK’s correspondent in the front row got to see some excellent pitching tonight.
i always buy a ticket when wade miley is scheduled
God the Astros are a pain in the ass. Good win.
it was. jurickson got over 200, but uh, dude, the throws?
Nice win butches!
With the win last night, I think that brings the record to 11-5 in non-Estrada starts, and 0-5 in the Estrada games.
Trump expects his lawyers to operate by Stringer Bell rules
Hot take: I don’t care that the Senate won’t remove. I don’t care whether it’s inconvenient politically. This guy needs impeaching.
if nothing else but to fill up the airspace
Absolutely.
This is one big reason I’m on team Dump Pelosi.
Blech
Fun fact: I was once part of an organizing campaign which badgered Hoyer so relentlessly that he ended up screaming at our lobbyist “ok ok if I vote your way will you people just leave me alone?”
Well that’s a load of bullshit.
I’m furious about it. What the hell is the point of abdicating your constitutional responsibility like that to avoid confronting an unpopular president?
Hey have any of you A’s Access members tried the (official) free seat upgrade benefit? I’m thinking of using one Friday, wondering how to do it. The A’s website is typically uninformative.
Also I’ll be tailgating Friday if anyone wants to drop by.
I have not, but I think one way is through the Ballpark app.
Yeah, that may actually be the only way. Noodling around yesterday I couldn’t find that path. Perhaps it’s only open right before or during the game in question?
Yeah, I dunno either.
But that reminded me of something else that might be of interest to you. While the 10-game pack only lets us choose seats in 210/211/223/224, I noticed in doing an exchange that all the sections in between were shown as available at no extra cost. I didn’t end up taking advantage of it as there weren’t great seats in those other sections for the game I was looking at anyway, but it may provide another official FSU opportunity for some of the more sparsely attended games.
Very good to know, thanks
I am not a soccer-knower. And I am a sports replay skeptic. Nevertheless, I just don’t get the over-the-top wailing about VAR. It all just seems to boil down to “refs have always made mistakes without killing the sport but pausing to fix them will ruin everything.” Basically the same traditionalist complaint as every other sport, plus an extra century of entrenched belief. Am I missing something here?
not that i’m aware of.
i’m pro VAR.
also, team schumer pelosi with nadler at DH.
lol. “pro VAR.”
like i’ve been watching soccer.
which i haven’t since that de-boca-l in december.
related and ICYMI: https://atrpodcast.com/ep/s1!c5106
VAR is fantastic and wonderful.
Thanks, and go As.
Well it’s about time. I guess we can stay in the league then.
Wait, he’s getting $16.5M in his last year of arbitration… and he just signed a deal the covers his first two years of free agency at $16.75M per? Khris must really want to stay in Oakland.
Yes, very team friendly deal. Reasonable price, without the team risking a longer-term commitment to a DH.
I wonder if they will make a run at a Semien extension before he goes into his last arb year.
He does want to stay, but the market is really only a few teams. 15 AL teams, minus Boston, new york, LAA, CHW, KCR, BAL. only a long shot at TX, SEA and MIN.
I don’t like that a player like him doesn’t get a fair share, but I think its a reasonable thing to do for him in today’s environment.
I don’t see how it’s not a fair share. He literally plays half the game.
Thanks, and go As.
I would rather him have money than ownership, it’s not his fair share relative to revenue
If proposed changes go through, it may be all 30 teams by the end of the deal.
He’s also disqualified from playing for 15 of the 30 teams.
Thanks Khris if you khrush 50+ dongs each of those years dinner at Francesco’s is on me.
Good on the A’s to get done something that absolutely needed to get done.
Semien seems like the natural next target to me. There’s a very real chance he’s breaking out this year.
I’d give him something like 4/45 and feel very good about it. He’s probably on track to get 11-12 next year in arbitration.
He’s another guy who might actually prefer playing in Oakland.
I’m still not sure how I feel about late-stage Ratto…the freedom from being edited appears to have taken him to a weird place…but man oh man is this a painfully good line:
“They play Game 5 tonight before their own fans in The Tank, the arena whose nickname has become its playoff motto.”
The end of the second period was pretty exciting, too bad they couldn’t put another in. I hope they keep it going and force another one in Vegas.
Mark Canha in the house!
Nice win, tense final 7-8 minutes.
Canha and Liam Hendricks with a post-game interview. Apparently Canha was a jr. shark growing up in SJ.
Has anyone here signed up for the free ballpark version of the “Clear” screening? It looks like a lot of ballparks have it available now, and anything that makes a security process easier, I’m interested in.
