Currently 0-0 in the first of three at Fenway.
Manaea – Porcello
Mengden – (Eduardo) Rodriguez
Graveman* – Sale
*Per Slusser, there’s a chance this could be Cahill.

Matt.
Matts….
6-15 (.286) in Fenway in the Melvin Era. 94-172 (.353) there since 1968.
Even La Russa only managed a 24-34 (.414) record there, not including the 4-0 in ALCSes.
I usually make a point of avoiding this. My car needed a few days in drydock, and I wanted the work completed before summer, so I scheduled it for this week. Realize now I forgot to check the A’s schedule when I arranged that.
Three runs, all scored by Matts.
This statement is no longer operative.
I like watching Fowler run. He seems to know what he is doing out there.
Still ahead thanks to the monster.
and non jbj
Matt!!
ESPN has Rays-Royals tonight. Who let that happen?
ESPN’s contract requires them to put each of the 30 teams on one of their telecasts once a year. Looks like the Rays were on for the Yankees’ home opener but the Royals hadn’t been on yet.
I was thinking A’s-Padres would kill two birds with one stone, but the Padres have already been on when they played the Dodgers in Monterrey. The A’s mandatory game hasn’t been scheduled yet.
Opposite game one of the NBA western conference finals is a good place for a contractually-mandated throwaway. Like when they show cheerleading competitions opposite the NFL playoffs.
I don’t think the A’s are required to be on Fox or FS1, but the FS1 game on Saturday is opposite a Royal Wedding.
Checking this, actually the game is after the wedding coverage should have been completed. You’ll have to get up very early to see the wedding coverage live. The news networks do have at least 5 hours of coverage scheduled but it’s mostly pre-dawn on the West Coast.
You’d have to get up very stupid to see the wedding coverage live.
I’m just glad Princess Diana got into that gene pool. I mean, look at Her Majesty and Prince Charles. Yikes.
Centuries of inbreeding will do that to you.
Wasn’t expecting Manaea-Porcello to be a high-scoring game.
God dammit Glen!!
Strange to say that a home run was basically a routine fly ball that the outfielder misplayed, but that’s what that looked like.
(Canha has also made a couple of good plays.)
(TLong gets that one though.)
Yay
Well how about that.
95-172!!
Facebook, Uber, and Wells Fargo are all running “we’re so sorry” ads during the NBA playoffs.
Hah, that’s awesome, Canha’s clevah.
SuSlu and KK were discussing where he gets at bats once piscotty is back. I don’t see why Piscotti gets at bats.
Joyce can’t play against lefties, and Fowler should get days off to protect his knee. That’s where Piscotty should be getting his at bats for now.
Canha should be playing every day until Piscotty forces him to the bench.
Olson has big splits as well (though with a young player there is more of an argument for just letting him play every day and hoping he figures lefties out).
And there’s the exclamation point.
holy moses
Dee Gordon signing looking better and better though.
After next week we don’t play Seattle again until mid-August. I bet Lowrie would look good in blue.
Their farm system is very bad though.
He tested positive for a diuretic, which I guess could be a masking agent.
That’s what they give racehorses (in the US … banned in almost all other countries) as a performance-enhancer, though it might not have the same effect on humans.
Also, our previous cat was on it near the end of her life.
Not a fan of the current system. There needs to be levels. Level 1 – Minor Offensives like this one. Level 2 – Medium Offensives like illicit/non-performance enhancers. Level 3 – Major Offensives like PEDS. That would give appealing leeway to raise or lower the offense. Then they can do something like 6pts and you’re banned for life. 1pt like a week, 2pt a month, 3 pt half a season, 4 pt, full season, 5pt 2 seasons, 6pt permanent ban.
Per this tweet, diuretics are not an automatic suspension. (“Prove” might be too strong, but the league at least had some reason not to believe this was an innocent mistake.)
Having levels would allow a case like this to be “pleaded” out. Without solid proof of that it was serious makes the punishment pretty strong. And it’s not really the first case like that either.
Also Cano’s decision not to contest the suspension strongly suggests more convincing evidence, given how flimsy the rationales other players have tried to use.
It’s collectively bargained. The players have decided to more stringently endure standards as peers.
another reason why the MLBPA really fucked up the last round
Not on this issue. I don’t think a majority of MLB players would say the drug policy is too strict. There was a lot of pressure from the clean players to deal with the issue.
Agreed. I am generally agnostic on PEDs but a more level playing field clearly best serves the interests of most current and future ballplayers.
I am talking about leverage, that was a great issue to use to get better pay
Oh, I know. The players felt pressure both from clean players and the public at large to act. It’s just a faulty system that lumps all violations into one. The unfortunate part is because of the bargaining, they’re likely to fix bigger issues than fix this one.
Smolinski (/Font/Hatcher/Fowler) survives another day.
I think Smolinski better learn to play catcher in the next 24 hours if he wants to make the trip to Toronto.
Separately, I would be happy to see Bobby Wahl (26Ks in 18 innings, 1.50 ERA) get his passport stamped.
It’s possible they could have a doubleheader tomorrow and Graveman could be the 26th player. I’d rather do Triggs to the bullpen and Font DFA, but I guess they’re keeping Font as what amounts to a Rule 5 player.
Can the 26th player be someone who was sent down without ten days passing?
Yes.
However, he does have to go back to Nashville immediately.
Well, good for him I guess.
wait. renato is the part of the name that trips people up?
it’s practically renata. renata with an appendage. (the -toe.)
(TAH-ko)
The Orioles are obviously going to clean house over the next couple months, so he should get an extended big league opportunity there after the All-Star Break.
Jordan Lyles is
67 innings into a perfect game against the Rockies. But not 8.
That’s what happens when you’re teammates with Drew Pomeranz.
Pom Pom at least used his non-throwing hand.
Khrushed
Yikes
It’s raining all the way back to Albany too. RADAR LOOP. They can either wait until 10:00 or 10:30 or so, or bag it and play that day-night doubleheader tomorrow.
Matt!
Was that a-ha Hanley was using as walk-up music? That almost ranks with Reddick’s Wham!
That was a nifty instinct play by Chapman. He’s good!
Pisco Sweet!
Reply fail. Anyway, yes that play by Chapman was slick as hell.
That’s a horseshit strike 3 to Davis.
That almost hit him in the knee. Just an inexplicable call.
2009 Brett Anderson was half the man he is today.
He has somehow aged 19 years in the last nine.
Moar runz needed
matt to matt walks
Good job Daniel
Navigated that third time through the lineup really well.
how do you think he does it? What makes him so good?
It’s sure not because the A’s always get the replay.
I don’t know. Lack of distractions?
He stands like a statue, becomes part of the machine.
benetendi is quickly becoming an easy player to hate
Maybe Mark Canha never turns back into a frog after all.
he finds it easy being green
HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?
a moreland proof lead
Trivino has blown past everybody except Treinen in the bullpen in short order.
Yup, and didn’t Treinen come out of nowhere last year to be our closer?
Well, Ken, We ARE getting exactly what I expected out of Chris hatcher
god dammit
*gulp*
.500
Soak. On. This.
Who’s that bozo Soaker who said the A’s wouldn’t see .500 again until Tokyo? What a negative dumbass.
The reality is this is still a team that knows how to put its foot on the clutch.
May 15. And counting.
a hairs breadth from over 500
another 4 out save from Trienen.
It’s still confusing how we got him from a team that was trading for relief pitching.
doolittle was an upgrade, for sure, but madsen?
Wasn’t he having a down year?
Yeah. Still. It’s weird.
Lazarito through 8 games in low A: .345/.429/.621
He turns 19 next week.
I thought I might have to go back to Connie Mack.
Last A’s series win in Boston: April 30-May 2, 2012.
Last A’s regular-season series sweep in Boston: September 3-5, 1990. Stew beat Clemens, as usual, in the middle game.
A sweep at Fenway is one thing. A sweep at Fenway with Trevor Cahill vs. Chris Sale in the finale is a 100-year flood kind of event.
Batting third for the Rays: Second baseman Joey Wendle. They’re also using Daniel Robertson as an everyday utility player.
And in the same game, Jason Hammel is still being paid to be not very good at pitching.
Those are some really bad rosters.
“lock her up,” the next generation
Oh for fuck sake
The proven “I am rubber you are glue” defense.
i wonder what he actually said after mayor and before jeff.
I’m morbidly curious to see how many homers Font will give up at this place today.
The other compelling aspect will be the counting of Sale’s strikeouts. Can he get to, or exceed, 20?
Alas.
No sweep but 3-3 on the AL East tour so far, not bad at all.
Perfectly acceptable
So close to 4-2
Dull was not Sharp.
ed and/or anybody interested in burger boogaloo.
20% off tickets today and tomorrow with promo code WHIPIT.
(and it’s still more expensive than last year.)
Damn, that is tempting, but alas Milo was selected to the SFYBL All Star team and we have tournaments
Also, I am only typing GATESOFSTEEL
A writer for the Adelson News comes to the same conclusion I have about the big league organization whose AAA affiliate will play in the new ballpark next to the Red Rock Resort in Summerlin in 2019.
If the Diamondbacks did go to Las Vegas, that would leave Reno open, and I’d think the A’s would take a hard look at that as an alternative to staying in Nashville. As she notes, the A’s already rejected Fresno once so I can’t see them going there.
The expected Milwaukee-Fresno marriage mentioned there makes no sense.
Actually yes it does, because (sorry 5Aces) somebody draws the short straw and gets stuck in Fresno. The Brewers’ affiliate is moving from Colorado Springs to San Antonio, where the Rangers will partner with them. The Astros, currently in Fresno, are replacing the Rangers in Round Rock. So the Brewers are homeless.
This is why I will go home twice this summer to see the them. The arranged marriage with Houston has been a dream come true. And as long as they dont have the Gnats I wouldnt complain too much.
I will hold out hope though. The Grizzlies franchise was probably at their lowest point when they last were team shopping. And they really were putting all of their eggs into the SF basket. Perhaps now the A’s see a much better ownership group and the best marketing in MiLB as worthy, and GM Derek Franks and the new owners figure out a way to make it work. A boy can dream…
A’s need an airport, yes? Nashville is busy enough with enough flights to SFO/OAK/SJ. Reno/tahoe doesn’t seem to cover any east coast city.
Nashville vs. Reno definitely isn’t a no-brainer, for that reason. The A’s play 100 games on the West Coast which leaves 60 east of the Rockies so the difference isn’t as big as it first appears. One issue is that the Nationals have been run out of Syracuse by the Mets and they may try to replace the A’s in Nashville.
A new facility in Las Vegas with nonstop flights to every MLB city, if they are invited to Las Vegas I’m pretty sure the A’s accept that over staying in Nashville.
~2 hour drive to Sacramento might be good enough?
the drive to oakland from fresno isn’t terrible, the issue for MLB teams is you may need a guy in KC or st pete, and its tough to get flights
Direct flights are the real issue. Plenty of crop hoppers to LAX/SFO and twice a day to Dallas and a few to Denver. (At least as of a couple of yrs ago)
rivercats attendance is plummeting still.
Someone suggested that would happen back then once they the River Cat best fans in the minors had to put up with a few yrs of crap. One of these days I will go back and look for the evidence..
(Still probably higher than Fresno though)
The Grizz are actually within 600 or so. And the RCs will fade which will hurt attendance. A non 0 chance Fresno could top Sacto attendance. I will write a letter to the editor to the Bee when that happens.
FWIW
Halemaumau crater going off!
Volcanic eruptions rank up there with the coolest things ever. Building demolition is pretty high on the list too. #NeverGrowUp
That is pretty stupid.
