Top of A’s lineup must be in a hurry to get back to the hotel before the NFL draft coverage ends.
First 6 were loud outs
Apparently only our pitcher can throw accurately tonight.
oh marcus
Manaea can still pitch in 2 consecutive no hitters
Matt!
Dear glen:
You are a baseball broadcast professional, why are you using Davish and Keuchel’s w-l record to predict contracts?
MATT! I mean CHAD!
Why in the FUCK is there an advertisement on the foul pole that is STILL IN PLAY in lf?
Thanks, and go As.
MAttRK!
if lucroy hit a homer instead of pinder, it’d be Mathew, Mark, and luc
Dang, lookit all the whupass we brought!
This will be six straight against Houston.
Are we…what’s the word…”good” now?
the pitching is smoke and mirrors, but the offense and apparently the infield defense are good
I think you mean Smoke & Manaea.
This has to be the first time we ever roughed up Keuchel.
There’s this (10 H, 5 R, 3.1 IP) from 2013
The first time I saw Keuchel was when we roughed him up years ago, so no.
I have a faint memory of him debuting against us in relief when we were kicking their ass in early 2013. It seems like ever since then he has dominated us (and everyone else).
For his career he now has a 2.88 ERA against us, but only a 5-5 record, as we’ve managed to win some pitchers’ duels against him. I think I had the front row seats for this one where Sonny out-pitched him late in the season (but Keuchel ended up winning the CY anayway, and Sonny finished third).
I think I had the front row for his first game and I commented about a left handed dallas coming out of the pen
Got him again.
Coming into the year, there was a good case that the best A’s starter (whoever you wanted to choose) would be the eighth starter for the Astros.
I suppose they could trade mchugh for prospects at the deadline.
Shockingly the Raiders drafted a guy with off-field issues. Different guy than the one with off-field issues they traded for yesterday.
Don’t forget the guy with off-field issues they’ll sign tomorrow.
Yeah but since they lost Aldon Smith they’ve had room under the off-field issues cap.
Max Muncy starting for the Dodgers?!
Putting up a 145 wRC+!
(86 plate appearances)
McCullers looked great in the top of the first, Mengden not so much in the bottom.
The homecoming maybe not quite what Mengden hoped for.
safe
fangraphs thinks Manaea and Mengden have both been worth 1.0 WAR this year.
Vince, you can jinx their pitcher. It’s fine.
“He gives a lot of energy to the bullpen. It’s just hard to tap into that right now.”
-Vince on Hatcher. Does he think he is communicating something or just emitting words?
So Hatcher is maybe as valuable as the bullpen catcher.
Walking the bases loaded to ice McCullers might work.
Yes!
this no hitter is inevitable, yeah?
Better period for Sharks than any in Game 1, yet, they’re behind again. This series might not be winnable.
Sagh.
Our best hitter Mark Canha breaks it up.
Maxwell you’re a lunkhead.
Hey now!
Font is here to make Pagan feel better about himself.
LOLOFONT
Comic Sans?
I’m going to go with Impact.
Wingdings
:)
We actually traded something for this guy.
Billy must have lost a bet with Farhan or something.
Come to think of it, Hatcher came from the Dodgers also.
Coulombe too. Billy dumped the Esteban Loaiza contract on the Dodgers many years ago, and you reap what you sow.
8 HRs in 12 IP is truly impressive
At least the Angels are losing by the same score.
Highly entertaining first overtime period ends still tied. Vegas had a goal disallowed and Jones saved another with his stick handle. Lots of good chances on both sides. 2nd OT ahead!
Couture FTW!
FK was down earlier, so it still needs saying: Catch the fking ball.
and back up second on a steal
Timing of this question is fishy, in this stretch with W’s and Sharks bumping A’s games to the secondary frequencies.
I still think 95.7 is the best radio home we’ve had for at least 10 years, maybe 20.
The problem is really being on a sports radio station that outright ignores the team it broadcasts. Worse, it skews heavily on free advertising for your rival team. I’m all for staying with 95.7, but the A’s need to be given a much more prominent feature on the station and their rival needs to be ignored outside the basics. That scenario doesn’t necessary fit well with the station’s goals of making money though.
Agreed that it’s the best we’ve had. The idea of putting the A’s on some oldies or pop station and then, “hey guys, it’s the A’s” is tired. There isn’t another sports talk station besides KNBR, and no matter how you feel about how the A’s are covered on it at least it fits.
Also, I don’t get all the complaining about how 95.7 covers the Giants more than the A’s; first of all, they talk about football more than anything and cover the Niners as much as the do the Raiders, also their broadcast partner, next is Warriors, and baseball (and Sharks) last. It’s all about what people want to talk about, so as long as they provide a good signal, ample pre- & postgame coverage, and a competent broadcast (cue Vinny jokes now) I don’t have any complaints.
Mixed bag.
Good: FM station focused on sports with a strong signal in the East Bay.
Bad: Broadcasts sometimes bumped for other sports. And sports gab hosts who care more about the Giants than the A’s.
To me personally the good far outweighs the bad, especially compared to some of the other stations we were on during those 20 years. I wouldn’t listen to those other shows anyway, so it really doesn’t matter what team they talk about, though it does seem like a bad look for a flagship station.
They are on the #2 sports station in the market, which is fine because the other MLB team is on #1, and looking at that list, what would be a better situation for them? There isn’t one unless they are willing to go Arte’s route of buying and operating his own station.
May be worth investing in the station so they have some practical control over it’s content and can better advertise their own team and not their rival. But the A’s are kind of in a lose lose situation at the moment in the short run.
Is terrestrial radio worth the price tag?
No
By the way, Ken mentioned that tomorrow night’s game is on 1550 AM. I thought, what the FK is on 1550 AM, and it turns out to be “Radio Zindagi”, an ethnic specialty station which is by far the smallest of Entercom’s nine stations in the market. Talk about being banished to the hinterlands; it isn’t surprising that Kaval would have a burr under his saddle about that. “Q102” has been carrying the games that got bumped, but after a few times that would start pissing off that station’s listeners. It looks like Entercom’s only other realistic option (due to relatively low ratings based on that table above) would be “The New Alt 105.3”.
1550 is where the old radio dial would start to resist being turned.
Side note: RIP Live 105 I guess.
Wait, this explains it. As of today, May 1, 2018, Radio Zindagi’s programming moved off Entercom, from 1550 AM to 1170 AM. It looks like their former station, KZDG-AM 1550, is being re-badged as “1550 The Game KGMZ-AM” and will become the default overflow station. I’m not in range to check, but they’re probably simulcasting 95.7 The Game’s programming except when these conflicts occur, at least until Entercom finds a better use for that spot on the dial.
Edit: Found a story confirming the simulcast.
that’s a bummer. I liked listening to 1550. I will have to program 1170 in the car
A column by Steve Berman in The Athletic on this subject notes that
His conclusion, which makes some sense, is that there could be added significance to the conversion of Radio Zindagi; maybe the simulcast will be broken not just for live game broadcasts but some added team-focused programming as well.
Thanks for this, very informative. Totally makes sense that the Warriors are a revenue win for 95.7, not just from general popularity but also since The Game has a big leg up on KNBR.
A’s are on 1550 tonight and on Sunday, I’ll check it out.
they never focused on the east bay. that is bullshit.
Althoogh it was a wise move on their part and they got just as lucky on the warriors timing. THis doesn’t happen in 2010
so I am watching the angels/yankees
1) why not have your best pitcher face trout upton pujols in the 8th
2) there is a commercial with REAL PEOPLE NOT ACTORS about a car, eventually they pick up kids and one aske “Who’s car is this?” the next voice says “this is the all new something something”
Chevy Traverse. It was definitely the all-new Chevy Traverse. I didn’t see the commercial, but that’s what it was.
also, left on left exposing his pitching arm, not otahi is not batting against chapman
The fan interference to nullify the Astro home run was called correctly, but Vince was being a real dick about it, taunting the fan with ejection. Dude caught the ball almost in his lap, without reaching over the fence. Yes interference, but not heinous behaviour.
And since he’s on the radio, hundreds likely thing the worst of the poor guy.
He’s totally reaching over the fence
And yes, it totally makes sense that Piscotty’s eyes are closed trying to catch the ball. A lot of things falling into place actually.
Heh. I was actually thinking yesterday when the fans were booing the (obviously correct) call, that they should have been booing the fan, since if he had stayed away there was a good chance that Piscotty would have botched it somehow.
He also says he previously got in trouble for interfering with a ball in left field. He should know better, but so should the stadium designers.
my take is always, the team that designed the stadium should ALWAYS be penalized for fan interference. Touched ball down the line, single for the home team, double for the visitors. over the fence? out for the home offense, HR for home defense.
Yeah, I guess it’s true that the fan was slightly over, but the design of the wall and seat location almost guarantees it. In any case mt original point stands…Vince sucks.
huh. that image isn’t making it through my blockers and filters.
i’m guessing the good news is, i don’t need to be pissed at sf gate specifically for bypassing adblock via javascript and thereby jacking pageload time to intolerable levels. it’s the entire hearst system using that template.
the other good news, i can still be mad at sf gate for their specifically horrendous font choice.
Franklin Barreto is batting .333/.408/.643 in AAA. He’s also striking out a bit less than last year and walking twice as much. And he’s still just 22. He’s going to be this year’s Matt Olson.
In other news:
-Luzardo gave up a two-run homer, struck out seven, and walked one over five innings in his second AA start today.
-Parker Dunshee and Brian Howard have K/9s of 12.5 and 12.4, respectively, at Stockton. That draft is looking pretty interesting regardless of what Beck and Allen turn into.
-Bassitt starts tonight for the Cats. I hope that means they have a plan to get him into the rotation and they haven’t just been screwing around with him.
-Sean Murphy has been tearing up the Texas League, combining nice power numbers (15 xbh already) and relatively low Ks. He doesn’t walk though.
Think anybody will want to bite on Jed! to make a spot for Barreto? He’s nothign but a 2B, correct?
Thanks, and go As.
It looks like Barreto and Mateo are both getting time at both middle infield positions.
Also I said Cats when I meant Sounds.
i don’t think there is much of a market for him, but if someone does need a fill in, he is the #1 target I would bet
The Dodgers need a middle infielder.
america’s favorite divorced dad is not cutting it?
Oh man, that sucks for them. Well, which crappy reliever are they going to dump on Billy this time?
they are going with taylor at short pederson in center I presume
LOL
Bright side: Fowler is 4-5 with a triple and a double and is now batting .309.
Was total muni a success or not? Its 7!
Ed: the latest update says they still have ten lines to go. They were just in a bike rickshaw to pier 39 to catch the bus that goes up to Coit Tower.
i am following the hashtag, but I the updates are so cryptic now. there were more details earlier.
I am watching the stupid giants game to see if they show them
now i see the chron page
YAY!
Scoreless first period in San Jose. To my eyes teh SHarks had the better of the chances and the offensive pressure, but damn Fleury is hard to crack.
Now heading to overtime again. The Sharks really miss Joe Thornton, which, obviously, but they;ve had so many strong offesnive zone pushes that dies for lack of that nifty tape-to-tape pass that is Jumbo’s trademark.
Drat. Allowed too many chances in OT to win. Aided by one of the great saves by Fleury that you’ll see.
Totally robbed Couture.
prêt-à-voler.
but really, i’ve been wanting to ask you, how much is the recently reported link between white nationalism and organized atheism actually a thing? and how is it perceived within organized atheism?
There have been some prominent atheists accused of sexual harassment or assault, including the recent big news of David Silverman being fired as president of American Atheists. But I haven’t heard anything about atheists being linked with white nationalism. Can you point to an article about this supposed link?
this is the alarmist article.
which i heard about, of course, through a podcast.
and i read up on it more on a site i have no outside reference to here (a year+ old) and here (but check the author name).
I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but after looking at the other articles I tend to side with the Friendly Atheist’s summation. Yeah, we got problems, but the misogyny seems to crop up first and foremost and sure, call out any racist bs when it pops up within atheist/humanist circles. I can see the point that the large pool of young white men are the recruiting ground for the alt-right, and that pool is becoming more and more secular, but that doesn’t mean that they are active in the atheist community.
Outside of the absurdity of racism itself, what would the atheist point at for racial superiority? At least the religious fanatic has a misappropriation of a deity to walk behind. Is it a misrepresentation or fictitious science?
thanks. sounds like you’re saying the story doesn’t really have much traction within the community.
is friendly atheist a major site? where do atheists get their atheist news these days?
tangential followup, what’s the deal with sam harris? that’s a weird hill for him and klein to fight to die on.
I don’t regularly listen to Harris’ podcast so I’m just catching up on this back and forth with Klein. I guess all things race-related are big now, so why not genetics? I’ll have to go down that rabbit hole some other time. Yes, Friendly Atheist has been around for a while, pretty reasonable guy it seems on the whole. I don’t actually look at many blogs/sites, except occasionally Pharyngula (PZ Meyers), who is decidedly on the SJW side of Atheism (A+). And I get the Morning Read from Secular Coalition, which today included WaPo article on why do we need a congressional pastor, and this congressional news.
thanks!
Can we fix Matt Harvey?
just tel him its the san francisco A’s
And no. he had the surgery that broke braden and santana
Thorasic Outlet Syndrome. Nope.
Thanks, and go As.
