Ew.

(See what I did there?)

    The 40-man is already full, so there’s going to have to be another move.

    25-man rosterbation
    IF: Barton, Ellis, Pennington, Chavez, Kouz, Fox, Petit/Miles
    OF: Crisp, Davis, Buck, Sweeney, Cust, Gross

    That’s 13 position players. I assume they’ll carry 12 pitchers.

    I might guess that Patterson will be traded/DFA’d, since he’s out of options. On the other hand, Miles and Petit seem redundant, and the A’s might just DFA Petit altogether.

      I appear to have forgotten catchers. Add Suzuki and Powell, and now I’m just fucking stumped as to what the A’s will do.

      • salb918 Jan 31,2010 6:21 pm || Up

        I guess that means Fox is optioned (does he have options?) and Buck is cut loose.

        • andeux Jan 31,2010 6:33 pm || Up

          I think Fox has options, but he’ll make the team and Chavez will be on the DL or retired.

            If he could hurry up and hit the 60-day DL already, we wouldn’t have this roster crunch.

            If they were ready to make that call on Chavvy, they’d be signing extra infielders. I think this means that Chavvy actually IS healthy, and actually IS the backup SS.

              Who are you and what have you done with monkeyball. Hell, even the A’s/Chavez aren’t claiming he’s healthy.

                That was before Beane’s furious rosterbation today.

                Now, of course, I’m agreeing with y’all that he won’t be on the roster.

            yeah, I don’t think Chavez will make the roster.

          If they cut Buck loose on account of Gross, my knickers are going to be in a major bunch.

          Buck has an option left.

      That’s 11. Who am I missing? Eveland, maybe? Another of those anonymous relievers I can’t keep track of?

    Apparently we needed a 144th outfielder.

      Worth repeating. It’s a good joke.

    According to UZR, in a limited sample, he’s been a very good defensive outfielder and CHONE/Marcel thinks he’ll be ~average as a hitter. Seems like a reasonably good player to have on the roster. Not sure if it’s worth a Travis Buck, though.

    There’s got to be a reason why he hasn’t been given a full-time shot, right?

    • mk Jan 31,2010 6:53 pm || Up

      Only about 10% of his career PAs have been against LHP (and he’s been awful in those). Maybe he is just lost against lefties, or he got that tag early on and it struck.

      Seems like they really do think Rajai’s a mirage.

    This move only makes sense if there’s more OF trading to be done. Thank god we already got rid of two of ’em.

    "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
  6. mikeA Jan 31,2010 9:23 pm

    Simple take on this move. They don’t like Rajai as an every day player, and think Gross is better than Buck, which he probably is. And it doesn’t mean Buck is gone, but it does mean Patterson is almost surely gone.

  7. mikeA Jan 31,2010 9:35 pm

    Could be dropped:
    Cassevah
    Eveland
    Mortensen
    Souza
    Petit
    Patterson
    Miles
    Buck

    I’d say Cassevah is most likely; there’s no spot for Patterson, but it’s worth trying to trade him. Miles is completely worthless. Petit might not get claimed. Very unlikely it’s Buck unless there are multiple trade partners lined up.

    • nevermoor Jan 31,2010 9:51 pm || Up

      Yep. Cut bait on Cassevah.

    Maybe Beane/Forst are off on one of their occasional weird lexical obsessions again. They
    re-signed Giese at Midland.

      I like Giese, unless this is a different Giese.

  9. salb918 Feb 1,2010 9:46 am

    So…Taveras has an even worse contract than Miles. He makes 4 MM this year. I would guess he’s a near-lock to make the team, meaning one of Davis or Sweeney, in addition to Buck has to be out of a spot, right? What in the hell is going on?

    CHONE says .300 wOBA, UZR/150 says very good in CF.

        WTF? He’s like Jake Fox on D plus, uh, H2N3 on O? Uh, really … WTF?

        I still don’t understand why we got rid of Hannahan — Beane seems to be spinning his wheels desperately to replace him.

            The former. The article is pretty good, especially considering the source.

              I want to know more about the “malingerer” issue — it’s unclear whether the AnonymA’s told Byg Csnurb “Yeah, that made Geren think Buck’s lazy,” or “Yeah, that made us think Buck’s lazy.”

        Aw. Poor Trav.

        The messages, delivered via demotions, challenges to his work ethic and manhood, silent treatments and, most recently, the signings of Coco Crisp and Gabe Gross and the rumors linking the A’s to Johnny Damon, have Buck’s head spinning — if not on the verge of exploding.

        Oh no! They’re challenging his manhood! He better fight back.

      • lenscrafters Feb 1,2010 6:28 pm || Up

        Well Buck hasn’t really been good the past 2 years in AAA so I guess it’s understandable that the A’s would want “more depth”. But still, I would much rather find out if he can be good again instead of guaranteeing roster spots to guys like Gabe Gross and Coco Crisp.

        Just chalk this up as another shady treatment of a player in the Bob Geren era.
