I’ll have to read that Mark Davis article, but is this reasonable for a quarterly NFL stadium update based on my casual observations?

    1. The Chargers’ prospects in San Diego have completely imploded and they seem like a lock to play in the Coliseum or Rose Bowl in 2016.

    2. The City of Oakland hitched its wagon to this fellow Kephart who overpromised and was underfinanced. They’re back to square one in Oakland and the 49ers don’t want them sharing in Santa Clara. Therefore, sharing with the Chargers in Carson looks like a path of least resistance.

    3. The Rams will probably stay in St. Louis. They’re using pregame fireworks to try to burn the current stadium down and force construction of a new one.

Mark seems to understand the danger in hanging on to a slavish devotion to a grand past that keeps Dopplering further from view.

That sentence sums up quite a bit of the Keown piece, and it’s good that Mark has established his independence from his dad. But a small thing that says quite a bit: not painting the 50-yard line gold strikes me as petty and childish, so there’s definitely some heredity at work.

        From the Deadspin recap:

In this respect, the cascade of bonkers details in ESPN writer Tim Keown’s terrific profile of Mark Davis—the tricked-out minivan he drives; his lifelong bachelorhood; how his father wouldn’t let him ride on the team’s charter plane—mostly serves to add dimension to a thing I think everybody who has beheld that ludicrous ’do already knows in their bones: That its owner is a lonely, stunted oddball whose father ignored him for the first 55 years of his life, then died.

Looks like it opens at 11. Not exactly an early riser I guess.

This part is even funnier for some reason:

Until nine months ago, when back surgery prompted a regimen of exercise and healthy eating, he spent Tuesday nights with Oakland fullback Marcel Reece and ex-Raider George Atkinson at Hooters for $12.99 all-you-can-eat-wings night. “They never charge us,” Davis says, “but it just feels better to say you’re getting all you can eat for $12.”

@Soaker: I actually think the demise of the ersatz development team (most recently fronted by Kephart) significantly boosts Oakland’s chances of retaining the A’s. Now Oakland/Alameda can negotiate with the teams directly, opening the door for Wolff/Fisher and their deep pockets to simply buy out the govt bodies. The Raiders may be out of luck, lacking such resources.

In related stadia news, it looks like the Supreme Court won’t hear SJ’s case, which even ml acknowledges is basically the final nail in the coffin of their baseball hopes.

It has seemed to me for the last year or so that the most likely outcome of all this will be the Raiders moving to somewhere in SoCal, and the A’s building a new field at the current site. Pretty uninspiring compared to the possibility of something in JLS, but it’s the path of least resistance at this point, and better than the status quo for everyone except Raiders fans.

I’d hope there’s some commercial component to a Wolff/Fisher development. Oakland has never reaped any sales tax benefit from the Coliseum, save a couple drops in the bucket from Denny’s on Hegenberger (and Sam’s Hof Brau way back when).

Sports teams are the worst for sales calls. I bought advance tickets for ONE Reno Aces game in 2014 (because it was July 4) which generated umpteen calls this season; obviously after the first couple I ignored them when I saw that number on Caller ID. Just today, the Cal athletic department has called me once and sent 3 e-mails. I’m moving my phone service over to Ooma Premier and once that’s up and running, all sports teams are going on the block list.

The block list feature requires Premier, which isn’t free at all: $10/month for the Premier service plus roughly $4/month in fees, taxes, 911 charge etc.

Should add to that, the Hawk is cutting his schedule substantially as he will not be doing home games next season, only road games, with just a couple of exceptions. The stated reason is that he lives near South Bend and is tired of the daily commute; it’s easy to hop on a team bus from the hotel though.

Slusser’s year-end wrap article points the figure partially at clubhouse chemistry.

Longtime team employees have described the clubhouse mix as the worst they’ve ever seen. Few players wanted to go on the record about the extent of the problem or name names, but many believe that there was an issue. “It’s awful,” one said.
Another consideration: With the A’s future so dependent on young players, there isn’t going to be a long leash for any veterans perceived to be poor role models, so look for Oakland to make some moves this offseason to address the personality mix. There won’t be room for complacency, poor attitudes or “me” guys. Expect character and leadership to matter for any additions.

It makes you wonder who didn’t really fit in. Is Lawry just too much to take on a daily basis? Is Country Breakfast not just bad on the field?

I have to think that “me” types will emerge whenever a team with a lot of veterans goes into the crapper early. There’s not a whole lot of “we” to play for at a certain point. That must be kind of shocking, though, for players who got used to winning and playing meaningful games for three years.

It seems to operate on a pyramid scheme principle. They need to keep luring in new victims at the bottom to feed a few winners at the top. Tough to sustain for the long term.

On one hand, I would say I highly doubt that the two big ones are trying to sustain anything at all.

On the other hand, NFL betting is completely fucking ridiculous. It boggles my mind that you can still hear radio spots for THIS WEEKENDS LOCK DOWN 100% PICK FREE JUST CALL OUR 800 NUMBER AND I’LL GIVE YOU THREE WINNERS WITH INSIDE INFO NOBODY ELSE KNOWS ABOUT FOR THE GAME

One of the ass-clowns on the morning show on 95.7 The Lame is there solely to give betting advice. His “analysis” consists mainly of talking about how the point spread has been moving, how teams perform against the spread in this situation or that, etc.

I don’t know about that. Seems more like online poker.

Most people lose affordable amounts of money and have some fun. Some people develop a serious problem. A few people get hot streaks, make a ton, and are promotable. Operating costs are tiny so a small per-event skim makes TONS of money.

Hey Soaker, I just went to a wedding at Benton Hot Springs over the weekend. I assume you are familiar with it?

Camping there was super fun, except that it started raining Sunday morning before we packed up. And that rain came with snow in the mountains, which closed Tioga and Sonora passes, so we had to drive all the way to South Lake Tahoe and then get caught in Tahoe Sunday traffic back to the bay area.

    • Soaker Oct 6,2015 6:54 am || Up

Oh man, that’s a remote choice for a wedding site, but very nice in a rustic way if you can get people to come all the way out there.

They got ~120 people or so, which is pretty impressive. It helps that a lot of the groom’s friends are climbers.

I’m flying to Boston tomorrow, and after a side trip to CT will be there from the 13th to the end of the month. It will be great to have some time to get to know my new grandson!

Colin – Though we’ll be doing family stuff most of the time, my daughter and her husband aren’t big sports fans so it might be fun to get together for a playoff game while we’re there. Let me know if you’re going to be around. She’s in Cambridge, we’ll be staying in Brookline.

    So. Playoffs.

    My rooting interests:

    Cubs
    Jays
    Pirates
    Astros
    Mets
    Rangers
    Dodgers
    Cardinals
    Yankees
    Royals

Which means I can, again, have ALL the teams I like knocked out almost immediately: Yankees win WC, Royals/Yankees/Dodgers/Cards win divisions. Can’t wait!
