Many Opening Day/Night starting pitchers are cycling through to their fourth start today, so we get Gray vs. Weaver. Weaver has made 30 previous career starts against the A’s and the Angels are 17-13 in those games…but 10-3 during the Melvin era. The Geren A’s won 9 of Weaver’s 15 starts, and the Machas went 1-1. The A’s have won 3 of Gray’s 5 starts vs. the Angels.
For the Green and Gold:
Fuld CF, Canha LF, Vogt C, Butler DH, Nuke LaDavis 1B, Reddick RF, Lawrie 3B, Sogard 2B, Semien SS.
Weaver’s bad now. We should beat him.
Average fastball velocity of 83, compared to 86 the last couple of years and 90 earlier in his career. At some point, even a deceptive changeup can’t possibly be enough.
I think I scared my hitchhiker. I told him some nights after a rough day at work I feel like crying in the bathtub while eating chicken nuggets and listening to sad songs.
What, did you tell him you use Miracle Whip as a dipping sauce?
A bathtub full.
Don’t judge me.
LET’S GO OAKLAND!
Fuld still working on his Coco impersonation.
Feels like the Angels win every replay challenge against us.
Huh. Looked out to me.
Yes, they definitely should have won that one.
I think the wrist if anything was touching fuld while he was off the base. not the glove. I think the glove touched him after he was on the base
basede on the angels replay on at bat wich was angels
Uh-huh.
I swear I am not high
Can’t.Stop.Laughing.
Boy howdy, Tattoo sure came and took Canha off the island pdq.
Another bad read by Fuld?
Fosse is apparently a big fan of players negotiating their own contracts without those greedy agents getting involved.
I’m sure that worked out well for him. I bet he was a Charlie O. guy through and through.
I hate playing these bastards.
its the only team I dislike. and I dislike hem from pillar to post
thank you sonny
What was Pujols thinking on that.
Now six A’s runs please.
You were cautious.
as lucky here as he was un lucky in kc
w h e w
Boy, Sonny dug himself a deep grave by walking Calhoun in front of Trout but managed to climb out of it.
trout had a good AB. but I was not unhappy with the walk
I was very impressed that Trout laid off that 3-2 pitch.
can’t even hit into a double play
It’s like Lawrie and Sogard are bad at hitting or something.
I was hoping McSlappy Sogard was just the type of batter who would be likely to succeed against Weaver’s slop.
fuld and semien
Nice job by Canha. I thought he’d screw himself into the ground in that AB.
there is your sogard
Weaver was annoying enough when he was actually good, but now the rest of the league is scoring 6 runs a game against him, and the A’s still can’t do shit.
Well, they’re HITTING him. They’re just not SCORING off of him.
And that means another inning of Weaver.
Huh, guess Sosh is playing it safe. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing.
I love closed captioning on baseball games. They continue to call Glen Duane.
there is your double play brett
And I think they just called Ray Tommy. They must be high. I’m used to skipped stuff and bad phonetic spelling. Honestly I just am too lazy to turn them off for live events. But this is awful.
therapeutic bunting
Well isn’t this an inning of interesting managerial strategy.
I don’t understand this inning
So far Melvin is out-mismanaging Scioscia but it’s not over.
WE Still have a challenge left!
Hey, he didn’t put in Gentry.
Everything bagel!
TOP FIVE
Well, great, they got a run, but I still don’t like sacrificing there because having watched this bullpen I don’t feel like a one-run lead going to the bottom of the 7th is the least bit secure.
Melvin saw the wp coming
And the 2 run home run!
And then the Fuld IBB immediately scores. Good grief.
Wait, he really intentionally walked Fuld? That happened?
yes. with one out. after a slower runner(sogard) already stole second
All right, we have a decisive mismanaging winner.
I think ibb are the lowest on that ladder. there was a good posnanski piece on it last year
The funny thing is, I can’t think of any scenario where they intentionally walk Fuld if Semien doesn’t execute the pointless sac bunt.
The funniest thing is it all happening in the top of the seventh. Both of them were managing like it was the bottom of the ninth.
Country fucking breakfast y’all.
Thank god he’s a country breakfast
well roxy, I wouldn’t say “broken it open” but its very good
I’ll allow it.
Billy Butler, y’all.
it’s be cool if we all could say the A”s batted around
thank you david freese
Thank god. I was worried Lawrie makes the last out and the argument restarts.
We can Ed, we can.
So another inning for Sonny and Ike to close it out?
asvd
cody ross
Any more runs this inning, the lead ought to even be Oh’Fuckity-proof.
So this is pretty cool. Also great Game Thread.
Scioscia face!
Billy Butler cares not for your BABIP.
So obviously we were offended that our run differential had been impacted so much last night.
Face Scrivener? “I would prefer not to” they said.
Send ’em to the dead batter office.
The third series of a long road trip didn’t go well last year, so guaranteeing at least a split in both the series and the trip with a chance at 3-1/6-4 tomorrow is a very nice start.
Seriously, weathering the longest trip of the year in week 2 is big.
Especially with a team with so much turnover, still figuring out roles, experience at positions (SS), and with a few folks out hurt.
I just can’t wait for the Giants to finally go on the road again. I’m at my wit’s end fighting through the orange drunkards on the Muni during this interminable homestand of theirs.
We took a family trip to the Ai Weiwei exhibit today, and the ferry was packed with East Bay Giants fans both from and back to Jack London Square.
going Wednesday. was itr cool?
Yes – but the exhibit finishes on Sunday.
wtf? I thought that’s why they were carting us over htere
We went last fall, during the WS. It was an evening event through MOMA, so there were lots of styling folks and the ladies attire memo apparently spelled out black wool coat with orange scarf. Fortunately, it was the game when KC blew them out, so we chuckled as we watched them check their phones and freak out.
And to Ed, we thought it was really worth seeing. Provocative and interesting.
Welcome to the bigs kid. Go ahead and just take care of Trout and PooHoles, ok?
That was very nearly good shortstopping.
Taylor Featherston is not a good baseball name. I imagine him wearing a monocle.
It’s pronounced “Smith”
Ice! Shin itches.
I’ll allow it.
WTF with the 4:00 start time today?
Angels just wanted to FK with Oakland’s travel schedule? Flying back to the bay area isn’t so bad, I guess.
There is no CBA-related reason why this has to be a day game. In a similar situation on July 29, the Dodgers are having the A’s play a 7:10 game at Dodger Stadium. So in that sense the Angels are giving the A’s a 3-hour head start, but the logic of 4 p.m. over 1 p.m. escapes me.
The A’s worst travel issue of the season is on August 17, when the Orioles are making the A’s play a night game in Baltimore followed by a cross-country flight for a game in Oakland the next night.
I thought that Baltimore situation was covered by the CBA, requiring an earlier start time before a cross-country flight. Not so?
Only West->East I think.
And I can’t help wondering if in this case Baltimore decided to make things difficult for the A’s on purpose.
This Cubs bit is strange:
The Cubs have an agreement with the City of Chicago to only play a limited number of night games each year (apparently the number is 43 now).
Presumably the league/union agreed to this exception in order to accommodate that, rather than switch the getaway games in other cities to day games as well.
traffic will be fine at 8. a 105 game would mean and extra 45 minutes in traffic.
Normally they make us play 7:05 games in this situation. They’re home tomorrow too, so it’s not their travel. It looks like they’ve scheduled us for a 4:05 start on Sept. 30, too, but that may be required because we play the next day in Arlington.
Wait, correction, they play the next day in Arlington. We go to Seattle.
It is nice that they made it possible that the game will end in time to switch over to the Warriors. Just need Jesse C to toss a Mulder, and we’re set.
Bassit <--> Leon
Did Leon even pitch yesterday?
Thanks, and go As.
Yup
His first Major League earned run!
And his first K!

It’s the best because it happens to AJ.
Ha! I’d love to get another angle on that to see the deer-in-headlights look on his face.
Catlike!
Can’t stop that freight train
I wish he could have stayed with us forever.
especially when I read things like this:
lol
Hee
This. I may actually pick up a Colon jersey one of these days. That and the fact that a jersey my size would actually look like one of his game worns…
Why even call him up theN?
Thanks, and go As.
Because our pen is thin as long as Chavez is starting and Hahn isn’t DLed.
I read that as “because our pen is as thin and long as Chavez”.
It’s how you use it that matters.
#crossingthepacificinarowboat
Because Graveman.
I like Howie Kendrick so much more since he moved to real Los Angeles.
