Game 16: Moving forward 131

Many Opening Day/Night starting pitchers are cycling through to their fourth start today, so we get Gray vs. Weaver. Weaver has made 30 previous career starts against the A’s and the Angels are 17-13 in those games…but 10-3 during the Melvin era. The Geren A’s won 9 of Weaver’s 15 starts, and the Machas went 1-1. The A’s have won 3 of Gray’s 5 starts vs. the Angels.

For the Green and Gold:

Fuld CF, Canha LF, Vogt C, Butler DH, Nuke LaDavis 1B, Reddick RF, Lawrie 3B, Sogard 2B, Semien SS.

    Weaver’s bad now. We should beat him.

      Average fastball velocity of 83, compared to 86 the last couple of years and 90 earlier in his career. At some point, even a deceptive changeup can’t possibly be enough.

            We went last fall, during the WS. It was an evening event through MOMA, so there were lots of styling folks and the ladies attire memo apparently spelled out black wool coat with orange scarf. Fortunately, it was the game when KC blew them out, so we chuckled as we watched them check their phones and freak out.

      Angels just wanted to FK with Oakland’s travel schedule? Flying back to the bay area isn’t so bad, I guess.

      • Soaker Apr 23,2015 11:29 am || Up

        There is no CBA-related reason why this has to be a day game. In a similar situation on July 29, the Dodgers are having the A’s play a 7:10 game at Dodger Stadium. So in that sense the Angels are giving the A’s a 3-hour head start, but the logic of 4 p.m. over 1 p.m. escapes me.

        The A’s worst travel issue of the season is on August 17, when the Orioles are making the A’s play a night game in Baltimore followed by a cross-country flight for a game in Oakland the next night.

            This Cubs bit is strange:

            (9) Getaway games shall not be scheduled or rescheduled to start later than 5 P.M. if either Club is required to travel for a day game, scheduled the next day, between cities in which the in-flight time is more than 1 1/2 hours. In each season, the championship season schedule may contain six exceptions to the rule in the immediately preceding sentence provided that the traveling Club is traveling to Chicago to play the Cubs and the in-flight time does not exceed 2 1/2 hours

            • andeux Apr 23,2015 12:47 pm || Up

              The Cubs have an agreement with the City of Chicago to only play a limited number of night games each year (apparently the number is 43 now).
              Presumably the league/union agreed to this exception in order to accommodate that, rather than switch the getaway games in other cities to day games as well.
