1. California moves closer to banning chewing tobacco at sport venues (would that include the spectators?)

2. The future is here and it is called StatCast (while I’m not that excited about it being incorporated into live transmissions, its addition to the well of the data that the analysts can use is of enormous importance. If it ever becomes publicly available, it will be a bigger sabermetric revolution than the PITCHf/x)

3. We should get Scooter Gennett. Apart from having a grade 70 name, he is a true Athletic (also a good idea for the June 24th improvements to the visiting clubhouse in Coliseum)

4. Apparently, Ike Davis broke PITCHf/x (or the first rule of the Ike Davis Pitching Club is that you never mention Ike Davis Pitching)

5. Obama lied, he never tried (it’s only genocide if you are not an important NATO member)

6. Searching for Explanations: How the Internet Inflates Estimates of Internal Knowledge (“Here we show that searching the Internet for explanatory knowledge creates an illusion whereby people mistake access to information for their own personal understanding of the information.”)

7. 603 km/h (or 3.108 Loaizas for those unfamiliar with metric system)

8. World Peace solved (I would have gone for Gérard Depardieu, but I can see the appeal)

9. Happy Earth Day, FKers! (“Mammoth”, “6/10” and “I solved it and it was fun, you should try”, respectively)

In case you are not satisfied with aroundness of this grill, please keep grilling until so.

    5. The town I live in is one of the main centers of Armenian diaspora in the US, so I’ve seen lots of events around this year to remember the genocide. I wasn’t aware of a particular push to get Obama to acknowledge it, but I can’t say I’m surprised by the realpolitik in this case.

      There has been a lot of lobbying in various countries. In Germany, the resolution that will be read on Friday includes the word genocide (well, Völkermord), but it was thoroughly debated how this will hurt the relations with Ankara.

      A local congressman annually pushes a resolution for it. The rep may change but the Saroyan lobby will always find one to write it up.

    We have numerous specialty license plates to choose from. You’ve probably seen the Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas ones which are far and away the most popular. As mentioned a while back I got a “Share the Road” one, and like it because the bright yellow logo helps me pick out my small silver SUV in a sea of identical cars in the parking lot.

    None of the existing plates has any particular political point of view to express. However, some members of our current conservative legislature think we need another option, and a bill to create it is working its way toward the governor.

    My question is: Are the people who would like to express that sentiment on their vehicle likely to be willing to pay the voluntary annual tax to do so by purchasing that plate? Or are they more likely to go to the NRA Online Store and buy a $2 bumper sticker to accomplish the same purpose? I sense program failure.

    What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
    • colin Apr 22,2015 12:14 pm || Up

      My general impression is that, for like 80% of conservatives, opposition to big government is really just opposition to specific government functions that they don’t like (helping poor people, mostly). So I don’t think there will be any problem with this license plate, though it would be excellent if Nevada invested the proceeds in a special unit of jackbooted thugs assigned to take away Cliven Bundy’s guns.

        The official Nevada motto derives from the state’s admission to the Union during the Civil War. It appears on the state flag, is a theme of UNR’s athletics marketing, is the name of a brewery…I wouldn’t say “ubiquitous” but you do see it a lot.

          More like “political expediency born.” Wasn’t it admitted when it was so that the Republicans would keep their supermajority in Congress, or something like that?

          • Soaker Apr 22,2015 2:30 pm || Up

            Something like that. A quick explanation from the official state historian.

            By the time Congress approved an Enabling Act for Nevada on March 21, 1864, the Civil War was winding down. The Union had won decisive victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, and the South was in shambles. President Lincoln sought reelection and faced a three-way race against General John C. Fremont, the Radical Republican candidate, and General George B. McClellan, a Democrat–he had earlier in the war relieved both generals of their commands. New states, and their popular and electoral vote, were needed to reelect Lincoln in support of his moderate, reconstruction policies for the South. Among the proposed policies was the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. If Nevada were a state, it could ratify the amendment and help in the passage of the landmark humanitarian legislation.

            • Soaker Apr 22,2015 2:39 pm || Up

              Adding (from the same source):

              President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada a state on October 31 (1864), a week before the national election, and then went on to carry Nevada in a relatively easy win over General McClellan.

      • dmoas Apr 22,2015 2:24 pm || Up

        The injury was accepted as being catastrophic by the workers’ compensation board. The enforcement division’s investigation alleges that Kenny Reddick submitted over $40,000 in fraudulent invoices for in-home and personal health care services he claims to have received as a result of his injury. However, the investigation determined these services were never provided, officials said.

        I’m confused. *IF* that statement is true, then he’s guilty of fraud plain and simple. It’d be one thing if services are provided. Whole other ballgame if they weren’t. The fact that he was still working elsewhere is a red herring and entirely unrelated.

            I’m just saying if what they’re saying is true, then it’s a pretty open and shut case of fraud. There’s no contention that he’s simply paying a friend to help him out for daily shit related to his injury as you stated. The contention is that he paid someone to do nothing. Without evidence one way or the other, I don’t see how you can make any claim for or against him.

      The bit about how all the new stadiums are throwbacks got me thinking about what a cool ultra-modern park would look like.

      • vignette17 Apr 23,2015 3:54 pm || Up

        That’s what I was hoping for with Cisco Field and with the Silicon Valley connection it made sense. Make it the techy ballpark. But then you have to constantly update because nothing would look tackier than 10 year out of date technology.

        Now the only exciting stadium designs are Phone Booth carbon copies.

        • sslinger Apr 23,2015 4:06 pm || Up

          Target is pretty modern looking. It’s not like they went crazy with an edgy design, but it is refreshingly non-retro.

    Kris Bryant is freaking ridiculous. He inside-outed this fastball near his knees and almost drove it out of the park to the opposite field. For other players, that’d be a popup to second on a swing like that. That’s incomprehensible power.

    (and the Astros could’ve drafted this guy but didn’t)

    • colin Apr 24,2015 5:16 am || Up

      Fangraphs Jeff breaks it down here. The only comparable drive he could find was an opposite-field HR from Matt Kemp that was still 10 mph slower off the bat than the one Bryant hit.

        • colin Apr 24,2015 9:00 am || Up

          I couldn’t find good documentation for that, but I think red are outs, grey are singles, light blue are doubles, and dark blue are HR. So it’s not really as clean as Jeff suggests because there were some long flyouts in the same direction as the Kemp HR.

          • ptbnl Apr 24,2015 9:41 am || Up

            I got the tool working for me, and though they’re listed by run value rather than outcome, you’re basically right (doubles and triples are indistinguishable shades of blue).

            Turns out the result is pretty sensitive to the pitch location box – I can get a handful more examples by tweaking the boundaries. More significantly though, limiting to left-handed pitchers only removes all but 2 other hits, and both of those were doubles against sliders.

    Several years ago I watched a documentary about the bridges Conde McCullough designed in Oregon for Hwy 101 in Oregon. It was a 30 or 60 minute show it seems to me, and was just beautiful. I swear it was on the old HDNet, but dont know that for sure.

    For the last few days I have tried to find it and am coming up empty. I dont know the name, or the director. And I was actually sick and feverish when watching it, so maybe I just dreamt the whole thing.

            Much like the perfect Mint Julep. (Save this one folks-Derby day is right around the corner..)

            Henry Watterson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of The Louisville Courier-Journal, whose famous recipe for the Julep still speaks to the old-fashioned Kentuckian desire for unblemished bourbon, says: “Pluck the mint gently from its bed, just as the dew of the evening is about to form upon it … Prepare the simple syrup and measure out a half-tumbler of whiskey.” (Bourbon is a style of whiskey, after all.) “Pour the whiskey into a well-frosted silver cup, throw the other ingredients away and drink the whiskey.”

              If you’re in the business of selling advertising and you get a phone call from a major advertiser threatening to cancel an account over something like this you figure out in a hurry what your editorial standards are. (Not saying that’s exactly what happened but it would be unsurprising.)

          It’s one hell of a weak apology all around.

          a) I can kind of understand not wanting to say anything about the content of a deleted post if it was offensive, but to not even say what blog/blogger it was?

          b) The post didn’t seem any different than the kind of things Halofan was posting all the time 10 years ago. The Adenhart thing DoctorK mentioned was probably worse. SBN should really take some responsibility for giving this asshole an audience for all those years.

                  I think that is an excellent name and an even better reason for an art journal.

                  Reverend Halofan was a troll, and vulgar, and much of his writing on the Angels blog was gross in that way. He is also a better writer than 95% or more of the contributors to SBN outlets anywhere. Where I found it ironic that he was both an angry punk and a defender of Nico and The Man as embodied by SBN, I also find it ironic that most of you here on a fringe blog born laregly of a desire for unfettered self-expression cannot see past the trolling to appreciate the value.

                  I didn’t find that ironic at all, as his angry punk act was always more “try to antagonize as many people as possible” than “speak truth to power.” As a bonus, sucking up to Blez probably helped him keep his own platform for so long.

                  He’s stupid for the sake of being stupid, and nasty for the sake of being nasty. Calling it performance art doesn’t change anything. So no, I don’t see the value in it.

                  I’m with you on this. And, for a site that likes to see itself as some great, I dunno, community-driven place with a bunch of little “families” of people or whatever, especially to the point that many of them get inside access to teams and players, you’d think the people responsible for running these sites would know to be a little more professional overall. That’s just how I’d look at doing it.

                  We also know people who maintained other pages did not like Rev’s act and how it reflected on them.

                  For sure, and that is often the crux of the debate about art and satire. Sarah Silverman versus Andrew Dice Clay. Mapplethorpe versus Flynt. Doesn’t have to appeal to everyone…really, it shouldn’t. The Rev was no Mapplethorpe, he was a vulgar troll, but he also occasionally had something interesting to say and said it well, and today’s groundswell tar and feather mob (Keith Olbermann?!) seems out of proportion.

                  Also what andeux says about the Blezup-sucking is most definitely true.

        On the one hand, they’re a big draw and now the reigning big dogs of the region. On the other hand, that’s a team that the Quakes should be striving to play in games that count, not in a cash grab exhibition.

    I cant believe I am about to do this.

    We follow a game. The people we “hate” are humans and do not deserve horrible things to happen to them. I really do wish Josh Hamilton can overcome his addiction. I really know Jeter was an incredibly hard working player and deserved most of the adulation he got. (I’m trying to work up the nerve here people…)

    I wish him the best and hope he and his family can deal with this.

      I haven’t tried trading white and green — or if I did I didn’t know it — but the new online system is great. You can choose your seat, just like buying a regular online ticket, but there’s no service charge. If you’re trading up to a higher-priced ticket, you only pay the STH price.

      Better front three than Messi-Neymar-Suarez? Club or country, any era.

      Unanswerable, of course, but I’ll start by throwing out a couple of possibles:
