This one is for FSU.
I sold my company last week, so I suppose I’ve got some free time to make grills.
Of course I have no links, so there is that…
I do have an adorable video of Teddy Bear the porcupine eating corn on the cob.

Wow, I gotta think of a better wish next time.
You sold the company? Is this good news? Are you now freed to pursue fashion maven status in a new and different way? So many questions!
Yes it is good news. I’m very excited! I’m working for the new owner for 3 months to get him up to speed, then I’m taking the summer off and doing nothing. And by nothing I mean walking shelter dogs, watching the A’s, and doing projects around the house, most likely. Then I’ll get a new job that in no way involves clothing.
awesome to hear and super congrats.
Thanks :)
woof!
down fido, down! i think she means, involves making clothing.
Congrats Batgirl. Enjoy an awesome summer of fun as reward for everything you put into cats pjs over the years. And try not to let the anti-Stanford prejudice get you down when it comes to the next job search.
We shall overcome!
what’s f-ed up is that shit matters. When we lived in Seattle in the late 90s, my resume stood out for people because I went to big university, whereas SLF who had an undergraduate degree from quinipiac (along with a masters, which i didn’t have at the time) had a harder time getting interviews
Oh yeah, you don’t have to remind me that the names of institutions on my cv are very important.
also she was a woman.
right. And I was going to say “and a jew.” but maybe I am wrong, but I have found most people that are prejudiced against jews don’t really recognize jewish names.
And would likely be as prejudiced against you too.
this
prEDjudice is real.
Thanks! My first resume in18 years. It’s a bit terrifying!
I’ll take quotes taken out of context for $1000, Alex.
Thanks, and go As.
Joe Maddon’s gripes about the Venditte Rules have me really excited to find out how pissy Scioscia will get about this. We need to have him on the team just to provoke the fat man.
no ass wipe, you don’t get more time to “warm up” to fucking hit
Right?
in a real game, you shouldn’t have to elect until the batter is announced
Huh. The Angels only have one switch hitter on their 40-man roster. He’s one I certainly endorse screwing with though.
the DEA is investigating messi. sorta. that tour of friendlies in his name that was coordinated by someone else to more than a little public and legal trouble already (cheap-ass promo schwag for expensive-ass tickets, and whether players who may or may not have gotten money paid spanish taxes on that money) is now allegedly a mexican drug cartel’s money laundering scheme. under the guise of allowing people to donate to the actual nonprofit cause (unicef or one of those international non-adults groups, who cares really?) there was a row of seats called row zero, which didn’t represent actual seats, but was meant for people who wanted to give money without going to the game and thus not taking any seats away from people who were buying tickets. well, since it was all different amounts of donation money, with no seats to count, there’s no way to check if there are discrepancies between what was said to’ve been collected and what was. there’s no allegation that players were involved. just the organizers, using M’s name for the tour.
facelift!
no-lift face.
how löw can you gö?
I’m happy to announce that I’ve just filled the Opening Night keg with A’s pale ale; after last year’s intrigue this really ought to be called putting a Milo on.
For the brewday folks (and andeux in particular) the partigyled brown porter made from the second runnings of the pale ale and a Russian Imperial Stout came in at 5% ABV and will be on tap on the 28th.
You had me at porter.
we don’t have opening day tickets. I don’t know if we will. I hope to stop by the tailgate.
You gotta believe, Ed!
should I wander the parking lot looking for a miracle?
Yes. I would bet that if you walked the lot with a finger raised, dressed in legit A’s fan garb (ie not a scalper), you would get a ticket at face value or less within 20 minutes. I actually used to really love the day-of-show ticket search process, because i was 100% certain i would get a ticket.
How many do you need? FSU kindly offered me his spare pair, but now it turns out that I’ve got the front row seats too.
its a miracle!
I don’t know, let me ask the boys. The older one may not want to go, if he doesn’t, I will tak you up, if he does, I’ll think of something else
I will keep the extra pair open pending your further instructions.
i’ll determine quickly
“truck ticketz”
Could you stop rowing the wrong way? Im in this boat too.
LOL
You mean that’s not how all the major colleges operate these days?
I assume it is.
Truth be told, it’s how FK works too. There are actually only 2 real commenters, plus nevermoor using everyone else’s log-ins.
Plus there’s the outsourcing to India, which explains all the comments about cricket.
dfa informs me that de villiers just gave up a huge over. south africa won the toss and chose to chase, which is bonkers. I have to go out again
Why wouldn’t you choose to chase all the time?
SA was destroying their innings when I left after wicketting out Pakistan
One example would be if the wicket was going to break up over the course of the day, giving the spinners more to work with, when you would choose to bat first.
As for the second sentence … SA is either singular or plural but not both, a side gets bowled out, and I doubt even you could dismiss an entire test side single-handed.
What does giving the spinners more to work with mean?
Also South Africa couldn’t bowl out Pakistan?
If the ground dries out and cracks around the wicket then the spinners can get even funkier bounces.
And South Africa could bowl Pakistan out, but you couldn’t (“… when I left after wicketting out Pakistan.”)
interesting.
You have to pay extra for the ones who can talk US sports. Which explains why they just hurl generic cal/stanford insults
Here’s a link: How much each band got paid at Woodstock. On a dollar-per-awesomeness basis Joe Cocker and Santana were the best values. Blood Sweat and Tears was the worst. Jimi earned every penny. And Sha-Na-Na got like 18 bucks per guy.
CSNY combined got the same as Arlo Guthrie. Crazy.
Well, as Stills famously said on stage, “This is only the second time we’ve ever played in front of people, we’re scared shitless.”
I’d love to see their full set. All I can find on YouTube is 2/3 of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and man is it great.

Of course Neil sat that one out.
According to their Woodstock Wiki page Neil dropped in halfway through the acoustic set, then stayed for the full electric set.
Oh goodie
There’s still an SF Examiner?
Yes. I regularly throw away the one they leave on my steps without even taking off the rubber band.
i deleted sfgate from my browser history and am focusing on the examiner. i kinda like it. don’t have to avoid all the lifestyle sandtraps just to find the couple of local news stories i open the paper for.
sfgate has really tanked the fuck out of their website.
though their house style to capitalize “the city” when referring to san franciso is irksome. especially when compared to an uncapitalized the city that’s referring to a an even citier city, such as chicago. at that point it works as one of those reversal nicknames, like when you call a tall person shorty or a 5-year-old big man.
That’s been an Examiner trademark since time immemorial. I’m heartened that they still do it.
i know. i still get embarrassed. and don’t want people in other places to know this about us. ’cause it just backfires. wants to be worldly but ends up exhibiting provincialism. not realizing that everybody does it, more casually too when they have more to brag about. just begs for a, “that’s cute.”
in mendoza there’s this one patch of eucalyptuses next to this one hill. one day my cousin’s all, let’s go see the eucalyptuses, let’s go see the eucalyptuses! we go. there’s like 20 trees. he’s proud of his hometown. and proud to wow us. do you realize some of these are over a hundred years old?! The Eucalyptuses! i don’t have the heart to tell him about that one hill in albany alone. or most of the presidio. tilden park. or, geez, australia.
was watching the quakes game, not sure what broadcast, but one of the microphonists kept saying the game was from ‘frisco.
which is such a horrible way to say… santa clara.
and why didn’t they play at avaya?
also, bingham comes out too far too often.
Um, it was an away game… Frisco, Texas?
yes Bingham is not Neuer and needs to stay on his FKing line.
Thanks, and go As.
ha! darrrr, me.
I know someone who lives in “Wichita Falls” Texas. The “Falls” is man-made on the side of the highway, and at absolute best 20′ tall.
I think World Series Marlins guy is sitting in the 4th row at Oracle tonight.
He is
And Spike Lee courtside in a Knicks jersey.
why?
ESPN had Kerr miked up and he asked Spike that very question. Spike said “because I haven’t been to a good basketball game all season.”
(Because the Knicks are God awful)
BURN!
except it doesn’t look from the score like it was that much of a good game.
The Mavs were outclassed. But he did get to see Basketball Messi do stuff like this.
And then Klay decided to make him feel like he was back at Madison Square Garden.
dat pass!
how did he do that?
I am officially calling Steph basketball Messi from now on.
this one is so messi, extracted from a probably NSFW argentine skill ‘o the day page.
That was the second time he did Chris Paul (probably the best point guard defender in the league) super dirty in that game.
That looks very much like a double-dribble
I don’t think so. He brings his left hand near the ball to sell the shot fake, but he never has two hands on the ball.
Might be, I couldn’t find the conclusive angle to support it either way
I’m confident that if he had double dribbled, Paul and Doc Rivers would still be at mid court swearing and demanding justice.
pues yo no

¡joder! que ciego.
Also, how have I never seen that Thicke video (linked to in comments) before?
It would be pretty awesome to be wealthy enough to fly around the US attending all the big games, all sports, in great seats. But the whole Marlins schtick turns it into kind of a freak show, like the rainbow wig john 3:16 guy.
Possible second career for Bed.
“a few requests for hot pink, but not enough to make them” — thank Heaven for small mercies.
I think he may not have understood exactly what she was asking with that question.
I want a truck vag for mine.
Sadly, they now sell pink on their website.
Or, this alternative bed second career.
holy crap, what were the spurs wearing tonight? easy top-ten worst uni of the 2010s, right?

Off to join Father Desme?
Yeah, reading some sub comments on Reddit, apparently Willis pretty closely followed a, um.. slightly different sort of evangelist:
apparently Willis’ facebook feed is filled of plenty of posts about this guy.
Thanks, and go As.
Hmm. I hope he has someone good and loyal looking after his money.
Didn’t the Niners have another guy who did that – a back they had just drafted the previous year, or something like that?
Ah yes, Glen Coffee, who retired to become a minister, and is now an army paratrooper instead. The lord works in mysterious ways.
Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.
A week ago today I was singing the praises of Lou Reed, Velvet Underground founder and acknowledged Punk Godfather. Seven days later, I am back to honor the VU’s Other Side Of The Coin, who was born precisely one week after Lou in a completely different part of the world. Rick Tittle: HURR DURR STAT NERDS
I like how he doesn’t actually have a reason for saying Coco should stay in centerfield
Thanks, and go As.
This isn’t Tittle’s point at all (because he obviously doesn’t know anything about UZR), but Coco’s pretty bad -13.7 UZR from last year isn’t very strong evidence that he can’t play defense anymore. We all know that his arm is bad, but his range score in 2014 could just be a bad fluctuation.
I’d prefer my CF to be able to throw the ball all the way back to the infield. I’m weird I guess.
Thanks, and go As.
I’m not saying that the A’s shouldn’t play Fuld/Gentry in center, but Coco’s UZR isn’t the best argument. (Gentry’s super awesome UZR is a stronger one.)
Sure, it’s not the best argument, but it’s a hell of a lot better than “I like him so I think he should be in CF”
Thanks, and go As.
What the hell is his point?
And hes a fucking asshole
Respect for the President on Foreign Policy the last thing we could all agree on?
Nah.
There’s nothing like a good treasonous undermining of a sitting President.
ubbelievable
Isn’t that a pretty severe violation of the Logan Act? One that comes with signatures of all that violated it?
This is seriously crazy.
YEAH DUDE BUT WHAT ABOUT HILLARYS EMAIL SERVER?!?!?!!
Thanks, and go As.
In fairness, that’s a pretty solid clintonesque facepalm story.
I guess? I mean I looked it up for like 10 minutes and when I realized that pretty much everybody does that, I was like meh.
Thanks, and go As.
Except that the rules changed after them and before her (for Feds). I’m not saying it’s disqualifying, but it sure is a reminder of how much worse she is at campaigning than Obama.
I’m legit worried that she is going to screw up what should be a pretty straightforward election for her.
To be honest, I’m hoping someone better shows up. There’s just something about her that is very much old guard that I don’t like. I don’t see her helping the country by being President. I’d prefer someone like Sanders or Warren who are far more vocal and aggressive against idiocy. She comes across backdoor and shady. On the right side of things, sure, but that doesn’t mean much beyond “at least it’s not one of those idiots in the GOP.”
Agreed. Bush v. Clinton isn’t an election to be proud of. And the GOP roster only gets worse.
From little I know, I would prefer Warren over her a zillion times. Would also help the worlds perception (not that anyone cares, I know) that USA is a banana republic where two or three families keep governing for decades.
We need to start considering the world perception. The dysfunction is going to eventually have some pretty negative consequences at some point. But yeah, stupidly no one really cares about that.
I mean, we did elect Obama twice, so that should be helping some.
But (re-)elected Shrub once.
…over the workaday equivalent of a vanity license plate.
(unless of course, she’s actually hiding something.)
Baseball Prospectus sold to “a group of baseball enthusiasts.”
Warriors
50 Wins
March 9
This Is Crazy
I’m going to be so nervous come playoff time. Expectations are a bitch.
If they play OKC in the first round and Durant’s healthy…well, it won’t be a picnic either.
I’m not afraid of that matchup (we beat them 3 of 4 this year with D&W playing three of those), but I am afraid of my health if the Warriors have to go through, say, OKC, San Antonio, Memphis to get to the finals. We’ll be favorites in each series, but the stress…Plus, I’ve never experienced a finals run. The playoffs last a looooooong time if you make it to June. I’m going to have to learn to pace myseslf emotionally.
There’s not a team in the league that I don’t think GSW can beat with homecourt advantage. But in the playoffs where hero ball becomes more valuable, OKC is as scary an opponent as you could get in Round 1. I will never not be scared by SAS either. And Memphis is a bad matchup for GSW.
That road is worst case scenario. Dallas, Portland, NOP, and Houston are nice matchups. LAC is semi-worrying but I have confidence the Warriors would win.
I don’t agree that hero ball becomes more valuable in the playoffs. The Spurs are the antithesis of hero ball, and they’ve done pretty well. If anything, I’m more confident this year because the Warriors are less reliant on hero ball from Steph than ever (not that he can’t be a hero when needed). There are a few things that probably do change in the playoffs, but I don’t think any of them cut against the Warriors:
Fewer foul calls? We don’t get many calls anyway, and we have a couple of guys in Bogut and Green who like to touch other guys vigorously.
More rest between games? Bogut, Iguodala, and Steph could certainly use that.
More time to game plan against a single opponent? I’ll take Kerr and his staff over anyone but Popovich (and certainly over OKC’s terrible coach).
More minutes for your top guys? We’ve got the best top 6-7 in the league by a large margin.
The reason I think hero ball becomes more prevalent in the playoffs is there are fewer fast breaks and more half court sets. The team that benefits the most from that is Memphis, but the Warriors always have quite a few fast break points as well.
That said, this Warriors team is by far the best incarnation of GSW that I’ve ever seen (most games above .500 in franchise history currently). They have the best home record in the league. Oh, and the best road record. Their point differential is historic and can only be matched by prime Bulls. And though obviously it’s an opinion, they’re quite possibly the most entertaining team in the NBA as well.
My excitement for the team is so much I’ve been reading more GSOM (the Warriors SBN site) than I ever have before and I’m seeing some old names. Apricot is a really good poster there.
Uh oh
Why fewer fast breaks?
Conventional wisdom says teams don’t gamble as much on long passes or bad shots in the playoffs. They play at a deliberate pace to ensure they aren’t giving up easy buckets.
If there is evidence to the contrary, I will happily revise my opinion. I only know enough to be dangerous with NBA stats; I don’t know them nearly as well as baseball.
You may be right. I’m just very skeptical of NBA conventional wisdom on the whole. Plus these Warriors seem designed to break a lot of that conventional wisdom. Top defense + breakneck pace + Steph Curry isn’t a problem the NBA has had to deal with before. I see no reason to think that won’t be just as effective in the playoffs as in the regular season, except for the fact that they won’t be playing any bad teams.
Butler is twice as wide as Reddick.
That’s why Butler gave Reddick the winch, to pull Butler out of ditches.
Also, Ford, yuck.
set it up at home plate for when butler tries to score from second on a single

Lee on Venditti
Nice puff piece. I like that his father wasn’t looking really beyond “hopefully” high school and “maybe” college ball. Nothing that really constituted pressure, just going out there and playing.
Well, he’s got that radio career to fall back on.

1. “Taylor…was rated as the No. 20 prospect in baseball in 2010…” This is why I can never get on board with the Prospects Uber Alles fan ethos. I like at least some of my birds in the hand.
2. I hope his Stanford education doesn’t hold him back. People can be cruel that way.
“Welcome in to Oakland A’s baseball! Along with Michael Taylor and Ray Fosse, I’m Ken Korach. It’s great to have you with us!” See, I’m not going to let the rivalry stand in the way of that.
right? heck, I would endorse Zito or Mcgwire. (not Milone)
It’s good to have a plan B.
I prefer plan 9
That video has it all!
Seriously, how does Reggie McKenzie still have his job?
He had one of the very best drafts in the league last year. He just signed a better center for less money than it would have cost to keep Wisnewski. And he has avoided making cripplingly bad free agent signings so far, leaving the salary cap in excellent shape. He’s made some mistakes for sure, but I’m still cautiously optimistic that after this FA period and the coming draft that the McKenzie scorecard will look good. Though they better win a bunch more games this year.
Thank god we elected Obama.
I’m officially embarrassed that I really liked McCain from about 1997 to 2003.
It’s seriously terrifying that he thinks (and likely other reps from both sides of the aisle think) that is appropriate and not a big deal. I say we stick a resignation letter in front of him and ask him to sign.
Dumb. But dummer.
Are these morons getting dumber, or just louder?
[checks paper]
Dumber, sir.
Hey now. I like the fainting couch senator’s idea. My only tweak? its him and his kind I keep out
My graph says both.
His latest pearl of wisdom:
History says: Excuse me?
I say: Fuck you
Well, you can’t expect anyone from the us to know any history. That is on you.

excellent!
We’re all blockheads now, Lucy.
Happiest of Thursdays to you all and welcome to another birthday tribute to wax your woofers and touch your tweeters right nice, I’d expect. This one’s maybe a little outta character for a jazz snob such as I, but as long as you swirl your hair to the music like the real headbangers do ball, it’ll all work out well. Blog to the hills with us now as we bring you a pre-FM remaster of “The Beast On the Road”… Eddie good on ya! It’s IRON MAIDEN on the radio at the old NYC Palladium way back in 1982, and it’s in honor of their founder and bassist Steve Harris, who was born this day in 1956 :P
Well, if that’s how it is, guess we’ll just toss our Panda hats in the trash.
It’s Bruce Jenkins versus the Red Sox latest megamillionaire. Everybody loses!
I hope Jenkins is lifting with his legs. Wouldn’t want him to throw out his back carrying all that water for Sabean and Baer.
right? and quoting huff?
What Did he say? If its just the only will miss pence thing, so what?
Judging by the way these “women with kids” who Jenkins invents a quote from reacted, it must have been pretty awful.
Those women with kids don’t mind a rapist, but be second-hand quoted bad-mouthing a sports franchise’s management and you’ve lost them, hearts and minds.
Moneyball Draft: Then and now.
Must be a slow day at MLB Trade Rumors site:
before newspapers died, talking with fan sites was interesting. now its just tired
Everyone gearing up for Pi Instant tomorrow?
I’m dragging my kids to a “celebration” at 9:26:53 + a little.
Sorry, but that was 2000 years ago.
well, MM years ago, tomorrow was: ante diem I XV/III. (day 1 before the ides of march.) i have no idea what year they thought it was.
but that’s OK, because 1970 years ago, tomorrow was february 28.
But if you write your dates in compliance with the ISO 8601 standard, π day would be, hmm, never I guess.
(Edit: OK, not never, but you would have to go out far enough to get numbers that work simultaneously in the tens digits of month, day, hour, minute and second.)
maybe if we go with binary Ï€…

1100/oct/01, 11 seconds after midnight. WE MISSED IT!
Is that eastern or pacific time?
There will be a countdown clock at the annual Pi Party, but I’ll be on a plane to Paris :-(
I get irritated by the way people are mixing the base-10 representation of pi with hours/minutes/seconds that are 24ths or 60ths. And I won’t even get started with the idiocy of ordering things by month, then day, then year-2000.
I really like this comment. I agree…but I can’t help myself:
NERD!
Serious question. Can we base 10 time easily? My hunch is days would have to be broken up somehow.
Days and years are both natural units defined by the earth’s orbit that don’t reconcile easily. So we’re kind of stuck there.
Hours, minutes and seconds are all arbitrary, so you can easily make time within a day decimal as long as you were willing to change those (e.g. based on .00001 days, which is around 0.86 seconds.)

the irony… “pi day” doesn’t work all the way around the circumference of the globe.
too long; didn’t finish.

It’s a little thinly reported for my tastes, but none of it is remotely surprising.
Good on XKCD.
stick to handwriting XK. that’s no way to set any of that.
In fairness, he probably didn’t have a ton of time. But yes.
I don’t get it.
Tribute to Terry Pratchett who died yesterday (too soon, at 66). The alt-text makes his point clearer, which is essentially that Pratchett helped many people see the world in new/bigger ways.
Boo. I was still hoping for that sequel to Good Omens.
Part of the Bailey/Sweeney/Reddick/Alcantara deal.
That sucks. I wish pitching weren’t an inherently self-destructive act.
Welp
Is it bad that I when I read his name I hear it in Scooby Doo’s voice?

Well, you didn’t expect Friday the XIIIth to be smooth sailing, so it is with tremendous sadness I write this message about the passing of one of my personal musical heroes. Blog with us now for a fitting memorial to a Octave Doctor Emeritus, as we celebrate the singular life of Earth’s Ambassador form The Planet Gong, who passed away this morning after a long fight with cancer. It’s a never-officially-issued complete GONGcert from May of 1973, and it’s here today so you’ll have something by which to remember the amazing and thoroughly one-of-a-kind Daevid Allen.
All right, you’ve been working for the weekend and what a wild weekend it is… not one but TWO superstars of modern music have birthdays. So let’s begin with Saturday (Pi Day, 3/14), the 17th letter of the alphabet and the man with possibly the most fingerprints on the sounds of our lifetimes of almost anyone you can name. Producer, composer, arranger, and megamastermind of projects from WE ARE THE WORLD to THRILLER by some dude called Michael, blog with us now for a never-DVD’d 1981 concert from someone who’s been doing STUFF LIKE THAT for 50+ years of artistry: the inimitable “Q”… Mr. Quincy Jones :)

It’s time for Part II of our weekend Cultural Icon For All Times birthday tribute series, so let’s dub this a Funk Sunday and get things going in a Family way. Yes, he may have shown up for TV shows higher than any other human being in the history of the medium. He may have missed 1/3 of the gigs on a couple of tours. His bass player (who also invented that slapping-n-popping thing, by the way) may or may not have once hired a hit man to take him out. Why should any of this matter? When you, me and everyone we’ve ever known is long gone from this rock, people will still get down to SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE. So get on up and dance to the music with us now, as we celebrate the 72nd birthday of their leader Mr. Sly Stone… all via a mega-rare pro-shot DVD of a performance at the legendary Harlem Cultural Festival in the Summer of 1969!
UCLA?
Someone needs to remind the NCAA that the 1970s ended a long time ago.
Yeah, that was… puzzling.
you dont expect them to go to the NIT do you?
The Crimson are going down, andeux!
Oh, that basketball thing?
Yeah, probably.
I am actually terrified, since Harvard has proven itself a dangerous tournament team, and Carolina has on several occasions this year played horribly against teams they easily beat.
Forgot to ask, are you going to be watching that after work tomorrow somewhere around here?
No, my plan is to covertly watch the first half on my phone at work, then rush to catch second half at home. I mostly cannot be around other people while Carolina plays an important game. Hopefully I can ascribe my inevitable first half cursing to work reasons.
I started writing a rant here about how Duke got the #1 seed over Virginia, but something else caught my eye. How often they have home games until Sweet 16.
In last twenty years, their median distance from the campus to the 1st & 2nd Round arena was 140 miles! Only eight times did they have to play outside of NC, never further than 500 miles if they were #1 or #2 seed (16 times).
I would really like to get my hand on a database of NCAA tournament results, if there is one, to do some stats out of it…
538 makes the point that travel really matters.
I haven’t read what 538 said, but there has to be an inherent advantage for east coast teams, so much more closely concentrated near appropriate sized arenas than the central or western teams are.
tagline.
My interest was piqued enough to start the tedious work of creating the DB for the last 20 years of the tournament. So far, I think the chances are not bad to have numbers support the theory that Duke is the most overseeded team in that era.
Overseeded compared to what? RPI or kenpom, or ranking, or record? I am one who believes that my team, Carolina, often gets seeded one higher than I think they deserve, and virtually never lower than they deserve.
Overseeded compared to what the baseline success in the tournament is for the team at that seed.
And you’ll be surely pleased that NC was actually the fourth most underseeded team in the last 20 years. Unfortunately, while overseeded, Duke is not nearly at the extreme
How are you calculating the baseline if you think the seeding includes biases?
I’m keeping it simple. I just look at what every #1 seed, #2 seed and so on have done over last 20 years. I give them tournament points based on what they did in the dance. This way I can have expected tournament points for every team based on their seeding over last 20 years. And then I look at the delta. The ones with positive numbers overperformed their seeding or were underseeded for their success. And vice versa.
I’m taking guesses at three biggest overachievers and three biggest underachievers.
Methodology is very simple, you get a point for a win in the first round, two for a win in a second, and so on until 32 for a win in a national title game. Eligible teams are the ones who participated in at least the half of the last 20 tournaments and have either expected or real cummulative tournament points of at least 32 over that period.
And because I know you were just dying for the results:
Every school at the end of the list is the author of one or more famous flameout games, like Duke last year, Kansas to Bucknell, Georgetown vs fla gulf Coast (and earlier to Steph’s Davidson team), etc.
I definitely see some 2s falling early this year. And who knows, maybe this will finally be the year a 16 wins a game.
The most you can underperform in a single tournament is 17 points, as this is the expectancy for a #1 seed (16 points in reality, as all #1 seeds so far have won at least one game). So to be fifty under, you have to have some consistency in underperforming or being overseeded.
Just looked at the bracket, and assuming Virginia is as good as you are implying they are, them getting Michigan State in the second round is pretty harsh. That’s assuming Michigan State doesn’t suck now, which I can’t imagine is the case.
if you have 20 minutes to kill, a good takedown of the NCAA
no offense to DFA, but any improvements to dolores park should be halted immediately. Most of the rich fucks who fuck it up on the weekend don’t really need the charity. and this guy is a hero
Fuck everyone involved.
Fuck that dude, vandalism is selfish stupid and costly.
Fuck the assholes that go to the park and don’t pick up their shit.
Fuck the lobotomized moron that hotwired the bobcat and went joy riding.
Fuck Scott Weiner for ruining the park with his objection to how this shit has always been.
Fuck the park and rec who were telling people that hey couldn’t have fucking beach umbrellas there last weekend.
Fuck the park and rec for giving people drinking in public tickets.
Fuck whatever city planner decided that radically improving the kids area was a smart idea.
Look this is an adult park. Its been that way since I have been alive. Just let it be that way.
Ticket people that litter. Like throw the book at them.
Don’t let non licensed vendors sell booze and edibles. Fine.
Don’t let drunk adults play on the jungle gym, whatever.
But this idea that weve spend a bunch of money so now people cant use the park as they have for decades is the dumbest fucking shit Ive ever heard.
Thanks everyone for fucking ruining it.
I suspect views differ based on how individuals want to use the park. I certainly liked that there was a solid playground closer than GGP when we lived over there. And I don’t miss the park’s history of drug deals, etc.
But I do agree with the sentiment that people should be able to hang out in the sun getting drunk as long as they aren’t being complete disasters.
Im just saying that no one was bringing their kids there before people started drinking there, why would you let your kids run around where it was pretty clearly unsafe due to drug dealers, poor maintenance etc. Drunks were there before kids. You shouldn’t plant grass on the baseball field thats being used for baseball because some other people want to use it for soccer.
So much tagline.
and i’m saving this one for “free nothing! in fact, pay double if you can’t get it outside of manahattan… a blog for yankee fans.”
Sure. But no one needs to be drinking there at noon on a wednesday, when it’s a great resource for anyone nearby to bring their kids.
No one needs to be bringing kids there at noon on a wednesday when its a great resource for unemployed drunk adults.
I can’t tell if you’re trolling right now or really being that stupid
Thanks, and go As.
Then I have succeed.
I feel like you won this conversation.
wow
Yeah, that one boggled me too.
It’s a start, I guess.
A blue ribbon commissioner then
Chavy’s got some Popeye forearms.
not enough. and too much Kuiper
So, um, Chris Borland…
beyond the Niners being totally FKed by the move, I’m pretty sure the NFL is going to be dead in 10-15 years at this rate
Thanks, and go As.
Not if Mike Florio has anything to say about it.
Yeah, the past couple weeks have sucked. He was the only thing keeping me even moderately ok with Willis’ retirement, now it feels like we’re just another 6 win team.
la putÃsima madre que me recontra parió!!!!
ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration.
still, somebody watch the boca game for me tonight. i didn’t check the sched and made an appt right during the whole thing.
starts at 6:15 on ESPN deportes. what we’re looking for, can boca maintain its perfect W-streak in the libertadores and earn an early qualification to the round of 16? it’ll be tough on an away game, with gago et al injured, and lodeiro and osvaldo saved for the weekend league game where boca is 2 pts behind the leader, who’s got 5 Ws compared to boca’s 4W/1T. (so far, i’m enjoying this season.)
also, go simeone! you got this.
listened a bit on the radio. scrubs’ team playing like a mid-boarder. no shots
onnear goal. zamora puts one in with the forward’s hand, but the ref makes it count. get to my appt.two hours later, i check my phone. and i bang it on the table because it must be broken. 5–1 boca?? 5–1 boca.
i love this team. and i love this game. FOREVER!!
I’ve watched very little Sharks hockey this year and tonight’s game doesn’t look like a very good choice. The positive spin is, they seem determined not to subject their fans to another hideous playoff loss. Also, the Sharks failing to make the playoffs helps keep any A’s games from being bounced off CSN.
And, at this rate, they are slowly but surely playing themselves down in the overall standings, and could at least have a small (but not improbable) shot at the best prospect since Crosby in Connor McDavid.
Hey, one of you people who follows Pac12 sports reassure me about Utah. KenPom loves them, they appear to be solid on O and D, and seriously underseeded. I want to pick them to win some games, maybe even beat Duke. But I can’t shake the nagging worry that the Pac 12 secretly sucks and Utah will lose its first game (and S.F. Austin is a legit team).
I know zip about Pac12 basketball, but did see this about 12s:
#12 Seeds had more success than #13 seeds and less than #11. Nothing really out of the ordinary.
This is the overview of the last 20 years. TP is the average of the tournament points teams with that seed make in one year. They are given for every win, starting with one point for the first round (round of 64) and doubling up for each next round until 32 for the win in the title game.
Seed Games TP
1 80 17.00
2 80 8.91
3 80 5.31
4 80 4.43
5 80 2.94
6 80 1.70
7 80 1.95
8 80 1.81
9 80 0.70
10 80 1.09
11 80 0.83
12 80 0.75
13 80 0.35
14 80 0.14
15 80 0.10
16 80 0.00
That’s the answer to a different question, though. All the low seeds hardly ever get later round wins. But for first round games only, the 12s definitely seem like they’ve had much more success than 10s and 11s. I wonder if that’s anything more than statistical noise, though. Feels like it is, but who knows.
In the last 20 years (1995-2014) the 12 seeds are better than 11 seeds, but worse than 10 seeds in the first round matchups:
09 seeds - 38:42
10 seeds - 35:45
11 seeds - 27:53
12 seeds - 33:47
13 seeds - 17:63
14 seeds - 10:70
15 seeds - 05:75
16 seeds - 00:80
And with two 11 seeds (and two 14 seeds) winning this year, even the gap between 11 and 12 is getting smaller.
and to not defend the call, but there is no reason my 11 seed was within 2. that was a failure of SMU.
its like the Tyus Edny mad dash in 1995, there was no reason that #1 seed was so behind with less than 5 seconds left. they deserved to lose.
And here is the trivia question of the day. No #1 seed has lost in the first round. But, over last 20 years, three programs have lost in the first round BOTH as a #2 seed and as a #3 seed. Which ones?
I’ll guess Kansas, Gonzaga, and Pitt.
0 for 3
I will readily admit I’ve never been too much into college basketball. But when I watch, I root for Duke. And I vaguely recall a couple of early upsets. So, Duke?
And…Villanova and Florida?
Duke it is. Surprised FSU’s missed on that.
The other two were not listed in either your or nevermoor’s guess. Hint, one of them is to me partly what Duke is to FSU and one of their two upsets brought us one of the most animated animated gifs.
Georgetown and Iowa State
Yup on Georgetown.
The third one is quite hard. They managed to do it in consecutive years in the late nineties
Somebody who would have been overseeded in the late 90s, likely due to strong performance a few years earlier? I’ll try LSU as a first guess and Michigan as a backup.
Was tormented about this and looked it up. They make Cal look like a basketball powerhouse. After their loss as a #3 seed in 1998, they’ve been in the tournament just once in the last 17 years.
Stanford? They made the final four the year before I showed up, then got upset twice in a row (by Gonzaga both times?).
1999 they were a #2 seed, lost to Gonzaga in the second round. 2000 they were a #1 seed, lost to UNC in the second round. So they made it through the first round both times, but still some pretty good choking.
Yeah Stanford is one of the prime underachievers in my quesry
Are you not counting this year? I’m pretty sure Iowa State joined the club.
You are correct. Maybe there is an issue with the “First Round” terminology, because in recent years the play-in round of 8 teams has been referred to as the “First Round” and the initial round played by the full 64-team field has been misleadingly called the “Second Round”. Prior to this year’s #3 vs. #14 loss to UAB, the #2 Cyclones lost to #15 Hampton in 2001.
Looking into it a little further, I believe EC’s original research is correct regardless of the terminology and Iowa State is the fourth team on the list. In fact, both of Duke’s losses have come since the 8-team “First Round”/68-team field was initiated in 2011: #2 Duke to #15 Lehigh in 2012 and #3 Duke to #14 Mercer in 2014.
So, Duke, Iowa State as mentioned above, Georgetown with the 2-15 loss to Florida Gulf Coast shown in the GIF in 2013 and a 3-14 loss to Ohio U. in 2010. The fourth one is XXX with a 2-15 loss to Coppin State in 1997 and 3-14 to Richmond in 1998. And XXX is 0-1 in the tournament ever since, a #10 seed in 2004 with a first-round loss to Memphis.
Yeah, crazy right?
The Round of 64 is still the first round, and the games before it are play-in games. Fuck the NCAA and their lickspittles at CBS for trying to inflict stupid terminology upon us.
Agreed
Re 2001: still too soon
I was not counting this year, correct. Iowa State is the fourth team.
Nova, Stanford, (Baylor, except that I don’t think they’ve been a 2-seed), Michigan State.
12 U of Wisconsin Green Bay over 5 California Golden Bears was the day my love of college basketball started to flicker.
And doctorK has just met his own Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Ouch. Sucks bad to have your team’s promising season end so abruptly. I feel for the doc. Also, I had Iowa St in my Final Four, argh.
to repeat
FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK FK
It’s an awfully thin year for FK with the doctorK’s now gone, the Soaker etal’s and the batgirl’s (edit: knew I forgot somebody: …and the elcroata’s) never showing up in the first place, and either the Upgrade’s or the andeux’s about to get KO’d. It’s pretty much up to the Upgrade’s and the Bed’s to advance past the Sweet 16 (and good grief I would like to see the Bed’s dismiss the anointed Kentuckians). It’s a little ironic that the much loathed Ed’s also have a path to the Sweet 16 now.
Are the Ed’s playing tomorrow? they will lose for sure if they are. They have not won on March 20th since I can remember.
No, they played today.
Happy March 20th, Ed!
thank you!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
DMOAS!
lol
Hampton University?
Billy Beane only cares about soccer.
i love this team. and i love this game. FOREVER!!i guess there’s still cricket.
I hope he doesn’t get confused and try to sign a rangy center midfielder when Gentry inevitably gets hurt
If he does, I hope he keeps in mind the crazy offensive environment in the Dutch League. It’s like the PCL of Europe.
it’s finally happening.
I feel like I’ve seen this noted somewhere on here recently. Like very recently. And nearby too…
refresh the grill, ed
Officially the club lists Reddick as “day-to-day”, but realistically his chances of opening the season on the active roster are fading. “It was just fine when I was swinging,” Reddick told the assembled media. “But when I practiced slamming the bat down after a pop-up, that’s when I felt it pull hard again.”
Good thing we weren’t really expecting him to do anything for us anyway.
What was it that happened to him?
He was practicing jumping up against walls and strained his oblique.
heh.
On my drive I saw a late model volvo wagon with a license plate fram that read “keep tahoe blue and gold. go bears”
This is gross. But also OK because it’s J.J. Reddick.
That Ole Miss – BYU was highly entertaining
This is some badass economic data visualization.
I followed the link and my first thought was that the 3D plot was too hard to read. But then I clicked through the various steps of the explanation and it was pretty awesome.
the picture of ice in the veins.
Poor Kun has no idea.
and el jefecito never looked so il duce.
FKing Baylor.
I commiserate with you.
I have to assume you’re a Baylor fan, because otherwise that cannot be your primary reaction to that ending.
Mrs. N went there.
Ah. Still, you had to appreciate the coach falling off his stool.
OK, I’m just learning that the coach is also the shooter’s dad? And that he was on the stool because he tore his achilles celebrating the team making the tournament in the first place? This is too good to be true.
After the way the BCS went (not only not getting into the playoffs, but losing a bowl and watching TOSU wreck shop), it’s been a painful end to good years that feel necessarily fleeting.
Tagline
yup
Thursday brings us a birthday tribute to a unique and unsung guitar hero with a penchant for odd tunings and losing strings. He’s been gone three decades, but that doesn’t mean that somewhere right now there aren’t happy people dancing their mess around to what he helped bring into this world. Blog underneath the Strobe Light with us now as we fire up a PAL DVD, from station masters, of The B-52s on German TV in 1983… and celebrate today’s birthday boy, their original and one-of-a-kind guitarist, Ricky Wilson :)
Wow, what a crushing defeat for SMU. I was watching without sound…did they review that goaltending call on video? Horrible way to lose, poor kid.
Apparently they just reviewed 2 or 3. Can’t review anything else.
That is ridiculous. As much fucking time as they are willing to waste on clock reviews in these games, they should at least be able to look at a questionable goaltending call, which video can conclusively answer most of the time.
This video of the head of officiating discussing the call is amusing. Watch his eyes shift to the left when he says “a chance to go in.”
The people defending this call must be the same people who thought the infield fly rule was properly applied in that 2012 Wild Card game.
hey!
holy crap that was a lousy call
FINALLY YOU ADMIT IT.
Oh, the basketball thing.
he.didn’t.do.anything.wrong.
We have a 26-19 halftime score.
expand the tournament to 108 imo
Thanks, and go As.
N.C. State’s uniforms look stupid.
The Steven F Austin mascot is terrifying, a Deliverance reject type swinging an axe.
Holy shit that game was harrowing. All credit to Harvard for playing great and to Amaker’s coaching (fun fact, he was in my living room one time), but the inconsistency that has been this year’s Carolina trademark was on full display there. It seems likely that I’ll be free for next week Saturday’s brew day.
Woo!
*realizes I don’t live in the Bay* *cries a little*
Move! Live with Ed!
I’m guessing Amaker wouldn’t have wanted the Ratface anywhere nearby during the living room scene.
It would have been like I went back in time and had a chance to kill Hitler.
But was he in your kitchen?
Are you guys just sitting around in your underwear all day watching basketball?
No, I just snuck in some TV watching on my phone while at work. Had pants on, too.
Bummer
yes. but soccer.
I’ve decided to go pant-less at work tonight.
what’s the catch?
Uh… I’m fat an no one should have to see me without pants on. That’s the catch.
gonna have to come up with something better than that. like a daemon face on your upper thigh.
A tattoo across your ass that says “if you can read this you’re probably already dead.”
oh. i thought it was going to be, not wearing pants… ’cause i’m wearing trousers / a romper / a donald duck suit!! or somesuch.
Donald Duck doesn’t wear pants
Captain Obvious, is that you???!
(don’t be mean. vicodin’s a hell of a drug.)
Well sure, tell me NOW. Where were you at 3 minutes before?
that’s exactly why i picked him over porky pig.
porky pig doesn’t wear pants
Does anyone else find it odd that Coke has an ad using a song about the accidental nuclear annihilation of life on earth?
I’ve always just assumed that’s been Coke’s long game all along
