Justified – Season 6, Episode 4 – Bigger Picture 2

Yeah, fine. One person is reading this. So I’ll keep it short.

This episode seems better on reflection. Yeah, I am getting a little tired of the perils of Ava already. Calm down, woman! But the show has such a strong cast of villains, and a firm grasp of its own history, that I’m willing to forgive it that. Overbearing ank heist guy gets a big introduction, then gets blown up, and Wynn and Boyd just kind of shrug. The legalized pot in Kentucky angle is a bit silly, in the medium term, but the show isn’t really talking politics here. The issue is land, and the lengths Avery and his henchmen will go to for it. Meanwhile, Mary Steenburgen’s character is getting a clearer reason for her existence, making the jewelry story scene with Ava worthwhile for that. Her Katherine seems to be the biggest threat to Sam Elliott’s Avery, at this point anyway. She used to be important, but just tolerated, and that galls her. The show tossed in old characters – Dickie Bennett, Loretta – but with a purpose, and a tie-in to past seasons, especially the glorious second one.

The best thing, overall, is that the season seems to be aiming for something bigger than just a triangle with Raylan, Boyd, and Ava.

I finally got around to watching last week’s episode before tonight. I love pretty much every scene with Loretta. Possibly just because it recalls season 2, or possibly because of great acting chemistry between Raylan and her. And of course, every scene with Wynn Duffy is great as well. I’m excited for the conclusion of this season.

I think my biggest disappointment in the last season was the direction they took in the relationship between Art and Raylan. I always loved the interaction between the two of them, so when they put the two characters at odds, it really ruined that part of the show for me.
