      My guess about Gruden is that he’d come back if the Raiders were willing to make him one of the highest paid coaches in the league (currently Pete Carroll and Sean Payton at $8M/year). That’s never been the Raiders way, though…Dennis Allen was the lowest paid coach at $3M. I can’t imagine Gruden coming back from a middle of the pack salary.

          They had to clear the plane and send on a team of 6 to fix it … apparently removing the bin door requires disassembling the oxygen mask system.

      Actually it was horrible.

      Rick Tittle decided to sexually harass my girlfriend and her sister and then tell me to go fuck myself when I told him that he was being inappropriate. We had to leave the event early. They cried the entire way home and the event was incredibly triggering for them.

      I would appreciate it greatly if he was no longer invited to the Free Kraut tailgates.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding or someone rubbing someone the wrong way, this wasn’t a situtation where someone rubs you the wrong way and you just don’t talk to them at an event, this was someone who said things which were deliberate and made it unsafe for people to be in a krautspace.

    huh. so this is what a ghost feels… forgotten, wanting to say “i wuz there!” though nobody can hear, left maybe the off chance that somebody else* remembers.

    when there were only 2 and a half bars in williamsburg and it was called the sweetwater tavern, this was my bar, goddammit. where not that many people would go that far from the L train for a drink. where there was actual punk in the jukebox. where through friends and cheap drinks you could get really pretty wasted under 15 bucks. and where i made an impossibly perpendicular fucking bank shot into the opposite side pocket to win the game once. ONCE.

    okay, there were 5 bars, but teddy’s and vera cruz, where i got in a fight with the chef via the waiter when i asked for refried instead of black beans in my burrito and he said refrieds have the wrong consistency for a burrito (WHAT?), but those were restaurants that served drinks, really, and the charleston which you only wanted to go to about half the time if you thought there might be free pizza and could stand the creepy owner with that laser pen light that he’d flash at open mic performers as a form of cheap-ass stage craft.

    * thank you to the comment by RM for echoing my sentiment, and surely RND’s sub comment was about that shot i made. and somebody buy me this book (if nothing else, read the kokie’s link in this… and i guess i have to amend to 3.5 bars out of 6, though this wasn’t really a watering hole).

                So, you tend to be more demanding on these things than I…

                I’ve been having a civil discussion with some learned Cleveland fans re: a Donaldson trade.

                In return, Oakland would receive Jose Ramirez, Giovanny Urshela, Trevor Bauer, Tyler Naquin and either of Luis Lugo or Mitch Brown.

                Thoughts?

                • DFA Oct 29,2014 10:23 am || Up

                  Like Bauer always have… but that seems a little light on star quality upside to me.

                  Im not big on Urshela

                  Lugo looks like Dan Straily 2.0 to me.

                  Ramirez could be good.

                  If im trading donaldson I want more.

                  Naquin is hurt and doesn’t do much for me.

                  I need two A-/B+ specs plus some nice secondary pieces. WAR concentration and affordability make it clear to me that we should only deal him for something really good.

                • grover Oct 29,2014 10:46 am || Up

                  The conversation started with the Cleveland side offering Chisenhall/Lindor/Bauer.

                  I said Chisenhall didn’t work for Oakland and suggested Urshela in his place, plus extra. They balked at Lindor/Bauer/Urshela. I tried Lindor/Urshela plus extra but by that point they lost their nerve on Lindor.

                • grover Oct 29,2014 10:38 am || Up

                  Naquin got his wrist broke by a pitch. Lugo is 6’5 200, left-handed and heading into his age 21 season… and you compare him to Straily??? You’re missing out on Urshela.

                  Do you mean Tony Wolters?

                  I will never, not ever, play the PTBNL game in a discussion of this sort. The 2014 draft class is untouchable at this time so they won’t be a factor in the conversation.

                  There’s no one better.

                  Boston is going to pursue Sandoval and Headley. If the Dodgers keep Hanley they’re out. The Royals should be interested but no way to they give up on Moose after this post-season. The Angels could cut Freese but honestly… fuck the Angels. Toronto could have interest but they’re farm system is arms + A-ball position players.

                • dmoas Oct 29,2014 3:22 pm || Up

                  If you don’t like the one that you can do and there’s no better one then you stand pat and keep him. Next year he’ll still have good trade value unless he falls apart.

                • grover Oct 29,2014 3:37 pm || Up

                  True.

                  My point is Cleveland has the pieces and the need to make a Donaldson trade work. I’m not saying it’ll happen because that’s not my department; I’m saying if it does happen the Indians are the best fit.

                  Pitt has Harrison, a budget smaller than Oakland’s and at least 2 holes in their starting rotation. Expect them to hold tight to Glasnow and Tailon but they have a quantity of arms and outfielders to potentially deal; I think they’re a good trade partner if Beane deals Kaz or Shark or even Norris.

    So, in honor of Red Ribbon week the Aces schools are doing themed dressup all week. I’ve never really understood what that has to do with a drug free life, but whatever the kids can have fun.

    But it just clicked for me-both the elementary and Jr High have been doing different things each day. But tomorrow it is unified-they both can wear sports team clothes, which are normally against school rules. They did it assuming a WS victory so all the clones can put on their new mad bum shirseys didnt they?

    The kids already knew what they would wear but I may need to go out and get new Rickey shirts instead because screw these people…

    Work rant:

    Stop asking me to fucking work for you. I’ve been working 5 and 6 twelves a week. Day shifts. Night shifts. Five in a row. Whatever is needed. I picked up hours THREE times this week already. You know what, YOU’VE already asked me to work already once for you this week and I said no. You just got back from Mexico on Monday. Yeah, your husband had surgery on Tuesday, but HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN HE WAS GOING TO HAVE BACK SURGERY. Don’t guilt me in to doing it. It’s always the same people picking up shifts. Have someone else do it. I’m worn out and sick of always being the one who covers shifts.

    • grover Oct 29,2014 8:50 pm || Up

      Sounds like a plan to me.

      I’ve been there and as easy as it is for these folks to ask you to cover for them it’s even easier for you to say “No.”

      Rant away, Jennifer. Rant on.

      • Jennifer Oct 29,2014 8:54 pm || Up

        Does anyone cover for me? Nope, not a single person who asks me to cover them. The bad thing is this person is a good friend.

        • grover Oct 29,2014 9:05 pm || Up

          Not that good of a friend.

          I cover a lot because I’m an OT whore. However, when I ask for help and get denied I make a note of who turned me down… and the next time they ask, I tell them “No.” And I keep saying “No” until they step up when I need them to.

          Or until my battalion makes it an order and then I go work the extra shifts… :)

            I also love the pay. Night shift? OT? Critical shortage? Fuck yes. But I feel like a rope slowly unraveling.

              You need to learn where the line is for yourself. I burned myself out one season, working 14 days or more straight. The next season I told TPTB I’d work 6 days in row if necessary but if we weren’t on an active fire on the 7th day, I was taking the day off. And if that meant my engine couldn’t staff on that 7th day… oh well.

              I also took some of that extra money I was making and splurged on myself. I made it a habit to go get an hour and half massage, then lunch on my day off. You need to take care of yourself, ’cause you can’t count on anyone else doing so.

        I would also ad that everyone knows who picks up shifts in a given workplace, and usually there is a reason: they need the money, they want to say as far away from the family at home as possible, they are trying to get promoted, or they are a sadist. Mostly those reasons don’t change. I would suggest letting people know that you feel overwhelmed and aren’t interested in picking up shifts. They probably don’t know that asking is a burden.

                  Sporting KC — last year’s champions, they have some really good players. Matt Besler and Graham Zusi are both National Team guys, Dom Dwyer is the young guy who is really promising, etc.

                  New York have been around awhile and are somewhat disliked because Red Bull bought them. They have one of the best players probably ever in Frenchman Thierry Henry, but he’s 37 and likely retiring at the end of the year. Tim Cahill is an Australian who is a pretty cool guy and scored (IMO) the best goal of the World Cup (youtube), and they also have Bradley Wright Phillips, a British guy who tied the MLS record for goals in a season this year after almost flaming out in the league previously.

          LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, NYRB are all no. Big market MLS Darlings, SJ are rivals with LAG and Seattle anyway. LA will always have a special place to be hated because of the way MLS and AEG (and Alexi Lalas) manufactured the Landon Donovan move, MLS bent/created new rules for Seattle to get Dempsey, and NY is NY.

          Red Bulls. Thierry Henry, one of my all time favorites, goes out with a title. Plus, don’t let the name fool you. They’re Newark’s team, not New York’s team.

          I’m torn on Seattle. I like the way they play, love Dempsey, Yedlin, and Martins. But I do not want the title match played on fake grass.

          • MikeV Nov 1,2014 6:19 pm || Up

            I do like some of Seattle’s players, but their fanbase is full of douchebags that act like the sport was invented in the Pacific Northwest.

                makes sense. it’s next on the list after inventing coffee.

                now that i’ve seen 4 games and am an expert, revolution ought to win. revolution-red bulls is the final. galaxy or sounders are both good enough to get lucky twice and go through, and even have a chance to win in if the red bulls use up all their luck on the semi and have none to spare. but if they can keep the same shape up for 2 or 3 more games, revolution takes it.

        river – estudiantes is getting interesting. estudiantes just tied the aggregate in the first minutes of the 2nd half. river gets ahead again with 30 to go.

        winner meets boca at semifinals of sudamericana. in the other semi, it’s sao paulo v atletico nacional (colombia).

        (edited. thought it was a 45 clock. it’s a 90.)

          oh right… it’s gonna be boca – river in the semifinals. home and away. that should make up for the supersoaked and superlackluster superclasico a few weeks ago.

          it’s been a while since they’ve had more than for-pride matches. last time they met in an elimination was the 2004 libertadores (boca 1-0, river 2-1, boca won in penalties). before that it was 2000 (boca won).

          this time, river has been riding a nice wave for months on end and boquenses should be worried. meanwhile, boca started like crap, got rid of bianchi, and has since been building into some sort of respectable shape. boca has one advantage, realistically being math’ed out of winning the regular tournament and only having the sudamericana to play for, that it can field the team it wants, where river has to stay ahead of a tight field in the regular tournament and might have to make tactical compromises.

        The other day I was listening to 154 at work. I started thinking that I wanted to include the currently playing song (On Returning, I think?) on a mix. Then I realized that the “mix” I wanted to make was just the entire 154 album.

    Fielding Bible Winners announced.

    Third Base – Josh Donaldson, Oakland Athletics
    “Josh Donaldson led all MLB third basemen with 20 Defensive Runs Saved. Here’s another way to measure Donaldson’s excellence. Baseball Info Solutions tracks a stat invented by Bill James called Good Fielding Plays (GFP). It’s not as easy as it sounds to define a Good Fielding Play—there are 28 different categories of GFPs. Donaldson’s total of 77 GFPs is 13 more than the 64 good plays handled by Colorado’s Nolan Arenado. Donaldson is especially good making plays to his right where his excellent reaction time and strong arm really stand out. Nolan Arenado was second in the voting: Donaldson 114 points, Arenado 104.”

        The fan base wants a rebuild, its the FO of LaRussa and Stew that are talking contention in 2015 while cutting payroll from $110+ million to $90 million.

        I got a little bit of traction when I originally dangled Shark but I’ve got a hunch Pittsburgh just might re-sign Martin in which case they’ll have 2 rotation spots open and a very limited budget to fill them; Shark to the Pirates would yield a nice return. Plus he’s a better asset in a straight talent-for-talent trade than Kazmir.

        It really is awful. And the kids all have different reactions with it. The eldest Ace keeps mothering me and telling me I must stop talking. The lilest Ace forgets and just wants to spend every second talking Minecraft.

        Lil Miss Aces of course has the worst approach. She is acting out, bugging the boys, etc. Then when I try to tell her something she either laughs at the voice or ignores me. Then once I am forced to yell she says “dad stop yelling your gonna damage your vocal cords..youre out of control right now”.

        Not gonna happen. Because he’s a Designated Player he doesn’t go through the regular dispersal draft, where SJ would potentially have a chance to snag him.

        Instead, it’s gonna be some clusterFK like with Dempsey, Bradley, and Jermaine Jones where MLS basically draws straws but then awards him to the team they want no matter what anyway.

        Honestly I think it would be best if he was somehow retained by the new LAFC, loaned somewhere for 2 seasons, and then is the marquee face for the club when they start playing in ’17
