      Prediction: with his unstoppable offense, Sonny Dykes does three straight draw plays into the line, to now set up his kicker for a 42 yard field for the win.

      With their third win of the season, Cal clinches their annual battle with the Raiders, “which of the East Bay’s awful football teams will win more games?”

        I think during half in the AZ nightmare, I talked myself into how Cal could be 5-0 heading into the UCLA game, and with a few lucky breaks (Hundley out), maybe even 7-0 into the Oregon game.

        1.5 halves later, I think there is maybe one win left for them on their remaining schedule.

    From the very first pitch, it was pretty clear Samardzija did not have it tonight. And frankly, if he is indeed a hurt, making the playoffs is only a formality.

  161. bear88 Sep 27,2014 10:18 pm

    The injuries have robbed the A’s of a real chance at anything but a playoff spot and, at most, a division series win. (Hard to imagine them beating slegnA in their current state, though.)

    But even a team as cursed with nagging injuries and some bad luck as the A’s have been shouldn’t fall apart so completely, so thoroughly. They have Gray pitching tomorrow, and Lester ready for a play-in game against someone who isn’t Felix on Monday.

    Despite everything, they should at least make the play-in game and participate in the postseason even though being the fifth-best team in the league shouldn’t get you squat. So in that respect, the A’s are quite lucky.

    This is a team that is playing scared in a way that goes beyond the injuries and exhaustion. A failure would certainly justify the blow-up job that’s coming in the offseason. This sort of collapse, if completed, would taint everyone connected to it (except Donaldson and the rentals).

    So win the game.

    • Future Ed Sep 28,2014 6:50 am || Up

      I can not only imagine them beating the angels, but imagine it not being that tough. Yes, lefties have been tough on them, but Santiago and Wilson are just not that good and Weaver is a shell of his former self. Any of the pitchers have a good chance of dominating the Angel hitters.

      Again, if they can remember to hit home runs, its fine.

    ESPN has Oakland’s playoff odds at 92.7%. Gotta be the lowest it has been since sometime in June.

    • Englishmajor Sep 27,2014 10:55 pm || Up

      MLB has the Baseball Prospectus odds plotted throughout the season. They still think we’re 100% playoff and Seattle’s 0 — not updated with tonight’s results — we’ve been 90% or better since June 1.

  166. Glorious Mundy Sep 27,2014 10:52 pm

    Seems like it should be about 87.5%. 3 out of 4 combinations tomorrow get us there + a coin flip on Monday.

    • dmoas Sep 27,2014 11:16 pm || Up

      Probably taking into account win %, win % of opponents, win % against opponents and rolling those into the various 4 out of 6 outcomes.

      • Glorious Mundy Sep 27,2014 11:22 pm || Up

        That’s meaningless in a one-game season when the better opponent has nothing to play for. Also, Felix.

        • mother pucker Sep 27,2014 11:32 pm || Up

          Yeah, frankly when you consider both Holland, Felix, the Slegna (or lack there of), seems like it should be much lower than that near 93%.

          • dmoas Sep 27,2014 11:53 pm || Up

            I actually doubt they take into account who’s pitching at all.

          • bear88 Sep 28,2014 12:27 am || Up

            Those percentages are silly at this point. Felix should give Seattle a high likelihood of victory, especially against a slegnA team that doesn’t really care and doesn’t want to get anyone hurt in a meaningless game.

            If the A’s face Holland, they’re in trouble. The likelihood of victory is a coin flip at best.

            That means a combination of A’s loss/Seattle win seems pretty decent. A Monday game in Seattle? Another coin flip, with perhaps a slight advantage to the A’s because of Lester. But I don’t see how that gets the likelihood at anything close to 90 percent.

            • dmoas Sep 28,2014 7:50 am || Up

    I queued up the 2008 college WS last night. Reddick might be mad but oh well.

    #4 regional seed Fresno State makes it to the WS and gets super hot. The equivilent to a 13-16 seed making the finals. Playing a Georgia team led by Gordon Beckham (god they Jetered him the whole series). The bullpen gives up a late loss in game 1. Game 2 becomes a total bullpen game (should mention all of this is because ace Tanner Scheppers-can this get more AL West-was lost for the year with an arm injury that he could have come back from but choose not to). FSU quickly goes down 4-5 runs. ESPN announcers spend good 2 innings talking about how big a deal it was for Fresno to even get here.

    Fresno comes back, takes the lead and wins. Sets up a game 3 where they actually have a healthy and somewhat rested starter. It becomes a coronation for underdogs to Wonderdogs.

    None of this has anything to do with anything, but I see lots of wierd little things (Did I mention that FSU had a thing where they would PH every time for their Catcher because they had lots of catchers and played them all?) that connected for me. I’m really broken right now and I’m probably staying off the computer unless we win because I was already a douche bag after last night and no reason to suspect I would be better today. But no matter waht, as of 9:16 this morning I still have fAith and I love the GnG.
