I spent the day at the dentist getting some teeth pulled so I can better fit in here in the South. Tomorrow I’m getting some tats and marrying my second cousin. Here’s a lounge for folks to talk about grammar, the weather, and Rick James. Lounge em’ if you got em’.

I only work one more day this week…so you know what that means…yeah, me neither.
I always appreciate that mini floss package they hand out after a visit to the dentist. It’s nice to know they care enough to give 6 inches of floss.
I’ve never understood why they give me a 2 year’s supply of floss every time I show up either. They must think Im Luke and I need to swing across where that bridge was in Star Wars daily.
I appreciate them giving me laughing gas before they gave me propofol. It was a delicious cocktail of medical awesomeness.
If my dentist liked me he would at least feel me up a bit.
He probably did while you were unconscious.
We just had a guy a bit north of here go to jail for 3 years for that. He said he was really sorry at sentencing.
Fres-no means Fres-no?
Merced does not mean Mer-si? That doesn’t quite work, but yeah.
Merced is for lovers.
Did he at least get Modest o?
Hmm…I did wake up with a sore throat and the vague sense that I had eaten a hot dog.
At least it’s thick
Sadly, once again my dentist didn’t torture me and ask if it was safe for him to move some Nazi gold.
I had my wisdom teeth cut out a few weeks ago. I ended up working the ERrr anyway that weekend. I have two giant holes in my gums now. Yesterday I had roast beef and there was enough left stuck in my holes to make another sammich out of. You’re welcome for that.
So you can now sneak in snacks to all sorts of events is what your saying..lucky.
Dude. I’ve done that since I was about 12. —-> ( * Y * )
And they keep warm snacks warm, which is nice.
Melts in your mouth, not your bra.
hi.
Thanks, and go As.
Is that a Toblerone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
wanna check
Thanks, and go As.
It better be candy.
Its got a creame filling!
I just had a boring old cleaning today…oddly I do now want a roast beef sandwich however.
Have you tried the Beef n cheddar at Arby’s?
That’s my wife’s nickname for me…I’m a beefcake who’s really cheesy…or perhaps she just really likes Arby’s.
Out of curiosity, last year how much would it have cost to get 2 sets of tickets for all the home playoff games? I’m thinking 3rd deckish (not expensive). And as part of the season ticket plan do we have a special right for that? Trying to figure out what I may or may not be able to do for this year so I want to get some sort of baseline.
Actually just dug back in the vault and got the baseline I needed. So thanks for nothing.
Always happy to help.
If you’re planning, keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of the cost is WS tickets (which they reimburse if the team doesn’t get there). I think my bleacher strip was in the range of $9 for WC $12 for ALDS, $25 for ALCS, and $85 for WS.
Ok that is a good point because WHEN we get to the series if I really was short I could probably flip one game and get some $ back. And we would be reimbursed for 6 and 7 after we sweep, etc.
Yeah. I would expect you could make a significant profit (even post-SH fees) on a WS ticket.
And yes, that’s right about the unplayed games.
Really really hoping the refund is smaller this year.
NFL training camps opening up, MLB trade deadline a couple days away and Simmon’s podcast is about the NBA Summer League…I’m about done with you, Sports Guy.
I just assume Simmons is always talking about basketball and the appropriate rating of various things he may or may not see around his house
He was really good at “my buddies and I just did this awesome thing, and I’m smarter about sports than mainstream”
He really sucks at “fifteen years ago my buddies were crazy. Also, mainstream caught up and I no longer care about my writing”
It’s pretty much gotten to that point. I mean who in the world cares about
summer leaguebasketball?FTFY
Summer league basketball was just responsible for Sacramento’s first championship ever, in anything! You of all people should respect that.
How dare you forget that great championship team…the Sacramento Surge of THE WORLD LEAGUE OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL! They won the World Bowl in 1992!
I know those words, but that phrase makes no sense.
I always knew Kay Stephenson would accomplish great things.
The Sports gal was cleaning out the entertainment center last week and he saw a bunch of Rom-coms…
If Beane can’t swing a MI I say go get another OF. Coco is fragile, Reddick is uh, bad. Gentry is a 4th/5th OF type.
I have the perfect match: Get Alan Wiggins. He can play OF and 2B.
“Alan Wiggins? Come on, man.”
You know I made this joke, but…
Has anyone tried to see if Burns can field at 2B? He cant be worse than Grant Green was can he?
This is a great card.
Gentry is better than you give him credit for.
We could still get Matt Kemp (4 years after I actually wanted him)
There absolutely has to be a MI acquired though.
Thanks, and go As.
Reddick isn’t bad. He’s fragile just like Coco, but not bad.
I respectfully disagree. I think he’s not a good baseball player.
Reddick and Gentry both have a lot of value in their defense, and they make a fine platoon, but if Coco or Cespedes is out we’re giving up too much in offense to have them both playing every day.
This is where I’ll get booed at…I don’t give a damn about corner outfield defense. I want plus offensive players at RF and LF.
they are saying Booo-ed
So obviously the answer is Billy Burns…
Who in the world is Billy Burns?
Sleepy Bill Burns helped in the throwing of the WS..duh.
Next week we are calling up Hal Chase for his 1B defense. Dead banned players are the new inefficiency.
That Beane…he’s always thinking ahead.
Carl Crawford!
Somewhat related rant to Bed’s above about Simmons. I get that MLB like to have someone be the “exclusive” whatever. And thats fine. But if you are only going to allow 1 company to make authorized throwbacks, can you have it be a company that actually cares about Baseball and 1) doesnt charge like twice what is realistic and 2)isnt busy spending time making throwback basketball SHORTs instead of Baseball JERSEYS? WTH is that about???

I could get behind the Raiders moving to Guam.
Just saw a tweet from Heyman that Burns is getting called up. This confuses me. I agree with the comments in the other thread that as soon as he gets here defenses play the . shift and he is in trouble. And if he is ever going to be successful he needs lots of ABs to figure that out and he should NOT be getting them here this year.
Hoping this is Heyman being a moran.
If they don’t think Peterson can play CF, then Burns is the highest CFer left in organizational depth. Clearly this is why they took so long to DFA Coco. They really did not want to call up Burns.
Turns out Gentry is the one going on the DL (first).
Damnit.
Which, sadly, adds even more credibility to your original thought.
Sounds like a broken hand for Gentry. You’d expect a former Washington acolyte to know how to fking bunt.
Wait. How the fk did that happen?
He was hit by a pitch on the hand during a bunt attempt yesterday.
Huh. I don’t even remember him trying to do that. Or leaving the game for that matter.
I remember seeing a fleeting shot of him wincing in the dugout while I was making dinner last night.
He was pulling the bat back, the fking umps called it a bunt attempt and didn’t even give him 1B.
Rangers broadcasters were surprised Melvin didn’t challenge. Replay clearly showed the bat had been pulled back and the ball hit him entirely on the hand.
Is that challenge-able? If they called it a swing it definitely is NOT.
I think you can challenge whether it was a HBP or not.
if he offered, the hand is part of the bat and cannot be HBP.
but determining whether it was offered at or not, i think that’s the part that’s not reviewable. i think.
The Rangers broadcasters were saying that you can’t challenge whether or not he bunted, but you can challenge whether it was an HBP.
Making an attempt on the ball by rule invalidates any HBP. So if they ruled he swung (not reviewable) then the results of a replay that showing he was hit become irrelevant.
Based on the various play-by-play logs I looked at, it appears that the pitch was ruled a foul bunt. You’re saying that negates the ability to ask for an HBP call to overrule the foul bunt call?
I think the stringers that write the pxp don’t have a button for “ruled an offer but it hit the dudes hand so its a strike”
The rule is, if you swing at the pitch that hits you, its a strike, regardless of where it hits you. Since it was ruled a swing the question of weather or not it hit him is moot
It’s not considered a HBP if it’s ruled a swing. It was likely ruled a “swing” or an “attempt” so therefore it would be considered a foul even though it hit is hand.
Hit on the hand yesterday.
Oh fuuuuuudge. (only I didnt say Fudge)
Are we all gonna die? I know it could very well just be me, but I’m starting to feel like we’re all gonna die.
You’re not alone.
I welcome death.
I just figure it’s a long nap you never wake up from.
Kenny Wilson!
If you don’t like Burns, why do you want to DFA Coco?!
The real question is will the OF include Burns or will Cespedes play center gardener for a while? I suppose you could do Reddick in CF for a while as well.
I think it’s now even MORE clear that we need to fix our MI issue. We can’t have a black hole at second base AND center field. And besides solid defense, we can’t expect much out a AA slap happy speedster.

Thanks, and go As.
(ESPN FOOTBALL PERSONALITY) I tell you what Tom Brady don’t have any tattoos because he’s a quarterback in the National Football League. (And then insert something about how Brady and Manning wear their hats properly.)
With a mustache like that he can’t be mediocre.
He’s a great QB…both Green Bay and Indianapolis getting such great QB’s back to back like they did is amazing…meanwhile the Raiders drafted Andrew Walter.
I was talking about Fisher.
You would think I would have known that. It turns out I don’t actually read what I post.
Really? You pick the Niners ahead of the Seahawks? I’m not sure I do. We’re gonna need a lot of contributions from a lot of new contributors.
Absolutely. I’m predicting 13-3. Hawks prolly 12-4, could be worse if Marshawn keeps up with this holdout thing.
Thanks, and go As.
I just don’t really dig Kaep. I blame him for both of our last two postseason losses. If he has gained enough self-awareness to know what he can do and what he can’t do, then we might be going places. Otherwise, I still miss Alex.
The turnovers in the 4th last year hurt a lot, but without Kaep’s legs in the first half, I’m not sure they’re in the game at all. I mean, look how Peyton did against them. Kaep was certainly better than that.
I’m talking about his poor decisionmaking at the end. Throwing to Crabtree made zero sense.
1 on 1 coverage is fine.
Fade routes are dumb. At the same time Sherman made a fantastic play.
He’s so much better than Smith is it’s silly.
Thanks, and go As.
If memory serves, Kaep had other options to throw to, or could even have tried to run it in himself. It was a bad decision and I feel like he makes a LOT of those as a passer. Alex does not. I’ll take the un-flashy guy who almost threw a perfect game over the guy who can run and make the occasional spectacular pass but also throws stupid interceptions every other week. Kaep has got to understand what his limitations are, or maybe just what the limitations of reality are.
Honestly, I kind of wish we could have kept both and try to figure out a way to invent an offense that maximizes both of them for what they do well. There are situations in which I want Kaepernick and there are situations in which I want Alex.
He seems to bend under heavy “pressure.” Not fold or break, mind you, but when it’s a key moment in the game he grows tunnel vision. And that tends to lead him to force things he shouldn’t.
There is no question that last year he did not succeed at staying in the pocket and going through progressions to find an open man.
The question is how to spread blame across: (1) lack of an open man b/c receivers sucked; (2) lack of time b/c pass coverage sucked; (3) lack of progression passing ability b/c he sucks; (4) lack of patience because he is awesome at running/has a huge arm.
Hopefully we will learn a lot more about him this year, and have another great season. Also, the point about how much better he looked against SEA than legitimate god-of-progession-passing Peyton Manning is not to be ignored.
Definitely on that last point.
Well Peyton Manning can’t beat a whole team by himself.
Kaep had 8 INT last year.
Smith had 7.
Thanks, and go As.
This could be confirmation bias, but Kaep’s interceptions have always seemed very stupid and avoidable. Smith’s don’t (anymore.)
That’s because Smith isn’t good enough to try the throws that Kaep does.
Thanks, and go As.
Dumb ones? That really doesn’t make much sense. A throw is either a good/smart one or not. Whether Kaep can try a particular one that Smith can’t doesn’t mean that an interception while trying to force a harder throw is smart.
and yet he only threw 1 more INT than Smith did, had a much higher yards/attempt, a higher QB rating if that’s your thing, etc…
Thanks, and go As.
Shall we circle back around to where BFN said Kaep’s seem stupid and Smith’s don’t (anymore)?
I should point out something though.
1) Kaep *is* the better quarterback, I agree with you on that one.
2) But I also don’t think right now he’s much better than Smith. Different strengths and weaknesses mostly balance out.
3) Kaep is still very young and inexperienced (despite his credentials) and has plenty of time through hard work to shorten up his weaknesses whereas Smith is who he is. More than anything that’s what gives Kaep an edge in any debate.
4) Interceptions in the NFL are grossly flawed stat. There are multiple types of interceptions and they really fail to count that. A direct interception that’s made because the foolish QB basically through it directly at the defender. A read interception where a poorly planned pass would read correctly by the defense and snagged before the offense could get it. Both of which are failures of the QB. Then there’s the indirect/tips where the pass was fine and on target. Got to the receiver only for it to get clanked or tipped either by the receiver directly or by a lucky defender only for it to fall into the hands of the defense. Those really aren’t on the QB.
5) It’s entirely the eyes talking here (i.e. zero sourced foundation) but most of Smith’s have been the indirect kind whereas most of Kaep’s have been the direct kind.
5) Except for the one that people bring up the most, which was actually a great play by Dick Sherman.
Thanks, and go As.
I *do* think he tried to force it in there. And I think all throughout the game, let alone that drive he had missed opportunities where had he not had tunnel vision for Crabtree, he’d have likely had more success. Ultimate it was a great read by Sherman and a throw that wasn’t quite perfect in a spot that it really had to be. There were bigger mistakes he made in that game than that one and while it ended the game, the other missed opportunities and a couple of major officiating mistakes cost them the game a lot more than that one. But they also flat out don’t get into the position where that one throw matters without Kaep at the helm.
I’ll buy the forcing point, but the consequence should have been an incomplete pass. I’d bet there are 1-4 CBs who can pick that, and it’s not a 100% pick for even them.
But there was just no reason to throw it there. He had other options.
The reason was Crabtree was lined up in 1 on 1 coverage. Kaep has said that multiple times.
I want a QB that has the confidence to throw the ball to his #1 receiver in 1v1 coverage. Again, Sherman made a fantastic play.
Thanks, and go As.
I pretty much agree with all of this.
I felt that way about the SB, but then I feel confident the Packers would have beaten the SF Smiths.
This past year I just don’t think we had the WRs. Shouldn’t be an issue this year (though we may not have the RBs this year when Gore realizes he’s cooked)
You think Gore is done?
Whether he’s “done” or not, it’s hard to believe he’ll continue to reliably be a very good RB. They tend to fall off a cliff.
I think he’s lasted amazingly long already (possibly because he never relied on top-end speed) and has seen his ability to break tackles go away. He could still sneak through holes and fall forward last year, but if he loses much of either skill he’s in real trouble.
Part of that is having the best run blocking O-line in the NFL.
It sucks that Hunter is out for the year already and Lattimore’s knee doesn’t seem to be cooperating. Looks like it’s gonna be the Gore/Hyde/LMJ show.
Thanks, and go As.
Oh sure. But he took totally unfair punishments for years as the only NFL-caliber offensive skilled player, which isn’t a recipe for a freakishly long career. And it shows.
Absolutely, and if there’s anybody who “deserves” to win a ring, it’s Franklin Delano Goddamn Gore.
Thanks, and go As.
Oh sure, I love the guy to death. And I hope we can get him a ring.
I just don’t think we can count on him to get us one.
Super Bowl XXXLVIII+”:VVVIL pick…
San Francisco 49ers over the Indianapolis Colts
Chris Denorfia is available…
*Gulp*
Prediction: Cespedes misplays a ball over his head then throws the guy out at third from the hill.
I might just tell him to stand on the hill all night so he doesnt let anything get over his head.
I want to put Reddick out there so he can try climbing the pole to rob someone of a HR.
I’d rather do Cespedes in left, Reddick in center, someone in right. Reddick may not be great out there (I don’t even remember), but he has a good arm and much better hustle. Center is not a place I like to see someone who doesn’t put out a lot of effort on catching balls.
About 35% of me thinks that Cespy will respond to getting to play CF everyday like it’s being in NY and he will start hustling to everything. About 25% of me thinks it is going to end up bad. And the rest is hoping Coco is ok and it wont matter in the long run (a series against Houston is a good start).
Cespy in right. I want that arm showcased.
Bartolo looking fantastic in the camo jersey.
Major Colon.
Or Colon-el?
winner
I don’t know, that sort of looks like a spastic colon to me.
Buying used shoes on eBay: yay or nay?
are they cheaper than zappos/6pm?
Thanks, and go As.
Yes, by a lot.
Yuck.
I’m about to post a pair of shoes on eBay, but they aren’t used.
I think they would need to be something really special, hard to find, and definitely cheaper. Even then I would probably regret doing it.
These are not hard to find, but they would cost 5x as much new, and these seem to be in pretty good shape (but there has definitely been another dude sweating in them for an indeterminate amount of time).
*tries to resist urge to make bad sex joke*
Welp. I won the auction. Now to shop for disinfectant spray…
I am right now wearing a pair of shoes from my client closet. the closet we get clothes out of when someone is in trial but is in custody so they can’t have regular clothes till they get to court
I’ve done it twice and was thrilled each time. Don’t worry, my friend!
I got a pair that goes for $300 new for $50, so I’m pretty happy.
Please show us the pair of shoes that retails for $300. I’ve seen some specialty winter boots up there but aside from that…
Here
most anything Alan Edmonds?
Thanks, and go As.
This turned out great by the way. Thanks to Batgirl for encouraging me. No thanks to dmoas for his negativity.
Be honest with yourself. Without the added doubt, the results wouldn’t have been as sweet.
FURTHER UPDATE: These are now my favorite shoes. I wear them 2 days a week minimum and I haven’t gotten any foot diseases. The heels started to come loose after a couple months, but I took them to an Allen Edmonds store and get this: They replaced the heels for free without even asking me for a receipt.
AE shoes on eBay are my greatest lifehack so far.
How much did you end up getting them for? Sometimes they do the 2-for-250 deal straight from AE
Thanks, and go As.
Somewhere around $50. I’ve never had any luck with their sales.
Wooooo!!!!
a tiny bit of a roundup because, gosh, i miss it already.
the big news, sabella said no. and everyone is calling for pekerman. (me too.)
(if you missed it, parallel news are that dunga is back to replace scolari.)
tevez’s dad got kidnapped for 8 hours, is now free. carlitos paid about U$ 50K.
san lorenzo is going to la paz to play bolÃvar in the 2nd leg of their copa libertadores semifinal, up 5–0 in the aggregate over the bolivians. but, as we know, la paz is way up in the air (2 miles or so) and it’s hard for visiting teams. and when i say hard, i mean difficult. but that’s not what san lorenzo wants, they want hard to mean like a rock, and even up in altitude, they want to keep it up for up to 2 hours, maybe longer if there’s an extension. so what are they going to do? why, take viagra of course.
palacio comes out and admits he got hurt during the last friendly and played hurt all through the tournament.
PSG wants di marÃa and is trying to sell lavezzi.
messi is still dealing with the spanish courts over possible tax evasion/fraud (that his dad may have perpetrated in his name).
ronaldinho is done with mineiro and is looking for a new home. early rumors involve river/boca in argentina, the middle east, or… MLS?
he’s doing better than riquelme, whom boca didn’t renew, and has signed on with his youth team argentino juniors (playing in B), and… won’t be able to play till the 3rd game in because of a knee thing. it’s kinda sad to see him trying to not retire when he can only play once or twice a month. sigh.
that’s that. hope a better baseball game today than yesterday gets me back on track. i swear i watched highlights of 4×200 meters freestyle relays last night looking for something to do in case baseball becomes threatening to my well being the rest of this season. i don’t know man… coming back to that scoreline last night really kinda hurt.
in this case I am OK with the mls being a ‘retirement league’
Thanks, and go As.
It does seem like there’s not much room for Di Maria on Real Madrid, no?
And if “playing hurt” is what we’re calling that rat tail of Palacio’s, I’m okay with that
Can I interest you in the FIBA World Cup? It’s just one letter different!
been sorta paying pre-attention. my guys got together and threatened to pull a france 2010 against the coaching staff. (i think that went away though.) and the spurs are not clearing manú for play.
i see steph is going. that’s nice.
That’s a major drag if Manu doesn’t play. I thought he was in since he’s listed on the roster. That’s a very old team, though, with or without him.
I think Steph’s going to go crazy in this tournament with the short three-point line and the tight international officiating.
i guess it’s complimacated. he’s got a stress fracture. yesterday a san antonio reporter tweeted that the spurs won’t let him because it takes 8 weeks to recover. the spurs haven’t made any official announcement. but FIBA and the NBA have a team-release agreement. and ABA or whatever the basketball AFA is called wants to fight that so the first step is to put him on the roster.
Tony Parker and Kahwi Leonard both pulled out a while back as well. It’s hard to blame them for needing rest after two straight Finals runs, but if Manu actually wants to play I wish they would let him.
manu’s out. ouchy’s not getting better quickly, spurs said no, and he conceded.
speaking of team USA and speaking of indiana… don’t watch that beatles leg video.
and argentina goes for the rebound relationship again. tata martino takes over on monday. because clearly he knows how to play messi…
well, at least copa américa comes early in the 4-year cycle. and maybe pekerman won’t have signed anything by then.
first time since 2004 that there will be a copa libetadores final without a brazilian team. even more shocking, this was the first time since 1991 that a brazilian team didn’t reach the semifinals. is there a crisis in brazilian talent?? though that’s not great measure since 1991 was only a few years before 1994.
No way they have Fred and Jo.
oh wait.
Thanks, and go As.
i just spat my caipirinha out my nose.
huh. san lorenzo took viagra to go to bolivia. and apparently i knew about it. i have no recollection whatsoever of it, or of mentioning it. and it hasn’t even been a year yet.
are you happy now, ed?
I am very pleased.
Gorgeous time-lapse / ludicrous intro credits from my project’s South Pole winter-over.
true and true
and he shouldn’t.
Thanks, and go As.
that should be “no more”
Ha. Remember when he first came up and he was in center because that was where he was “most comfortable.” Good times. Actually, I have a lot of respect for him for stepping up and saying it. It was clear he wasn’t comfortable out there.
San Antonio Raiders?
Thanks, and go As.
ZOMG MARK DAVIS LIED HE DIDN’T TRY!11!!11!!!!!!
No. Why do that when LA is open?
Just a pit stop on the eventual move to Monterrey.
and this is how GM ended up needing a passport when he thought he was just planning a pacific grove weekend.
They have something ready. all the stadia in LA have known issues so this could be seen as a better threat.
I haven’t kept track of the LA stadium debate, but logically he (or the Jacksonville owner) should get together with U$C and build a Super Bowl-worthy stadium on the LA Coliseum site. UCLA, U$C, the Raiders or Jaguars and the Rose Bowl game could all share the Rose Bowl for a couple years.
NFL itself is flirting with the idea of building their own stadium there. Then leasing it to a few teams, utilizing it for bowl games and the Super Bowl rotation. That way they can build it prior to announcing a team coming. Odds are low that it happens, but there was recent talk of it.
I think the Jags will be the London team if that ever happens.
They seem extremely primed to making that happen. Really odd since a lot of fans cringe at it. But they’re the one’s running the show.
I think for it to work you need to have two teams in Europe so American teams could go over for there for two weeks with a bye week coming back. Maybe one in England and one in Germany.
That really makes the most sense. If they really plan on doing it, they need to work a lot more a spreading the brand across Europe on the whole. Ideally you’d see a full division there. I suspect at some point it’ll happen. There’s only so much revenue growth you can achieve if you remain within the continental US. And they’re run by some ready MFers.
Depends on where the free money is at.
Especially if they are going to be “given” the Alamodome and then have a new stadium built later.
Thanks, and go As.
Yep. And Texas is known for being a welfare state for the billionaires who are in
needwant.I would think the Cowboys and the Texans would fight against the move but maybe Mark will be like his Dad and just do the move and sue. It would seem odd to put a team in a market like San Antonio with LA still having no teams but with the Raiders who the hell knows?
Yep. Mark is so screwy you never really know whether he’s series or just chasing his tail.
FTFY
I feel within five years the Raiders will be back in LA and Mark Davis will be a minority owner.
Because fuck LA.
Why would you relocate or replace 100% of your staff and lose 99.5% of your current ticket buyers to move to a stadium with fewer suites in a much smaller market, with fewer potential corporate sponsors, just in hopes of a better deal on a new stadium in a few years? Moving to Santa Clara would be a much easier solution, moving to LA would be less complicated. And there’s no reason why the Raiders can’t stay at the Coliseum and complain about dirt on their field for as long as they want.
YAY
Thanks, and go As.
Ugh
Ugh
Chronic and degenerative are words I dont like to see around my team leaders in any way shape or form.
Sounds kinda Bo Jacksony, doesn’t it.
Ugh-now why’d you have to go there? I was just thinking of Mrs(?) Aces back. She has a chronic degenerative issue and it just makes it where for days at a time she may need a cane to walk, etc. That’s not so good as a CF. And they dont really make a cane like device for your neck. (I guess he could walk around with one of those whiplash braces on, but again not the best look for your CF).
till mr. brady throws his suitcase down and you turn to look at it.
Glad I’m not the only one whose brain went there immediately.
Mine led to severe arthritis to the point where I have next to no “sponginess” in my back. Unpleasant to say the least.
Especially when he was just given a 2 year extension.
Thanks, and go As.
That’s fancy words for arthritis.
against the mariners. double header
A double header against the Mariners…that sentence fills me with dread.
I guess the question is what “changes” is a euphemism for. Changed from straight to crooked, one piece to many, intact to shattered.
His numbers since the injury overall have been great, so there’s that.
Shea just tweeted that the MRI showed “no changes” and they will know more when they get back. This is sounding like half empty and half full dueling tweets.
Shea also tweeted (paraphrasing): You know who would be perfect for the A’s? Ben Zobrist.
No shit dude.
Hey, if we could swing getting Cano and that Trout guy too I would be for it.
I hear Ted Williams’ frozen head is available for a trade.
Today my insurance agent let me know I had been under paying my car insurance since I got my new SUV. Because of a clerical error. My rates will more than double starting in September. So I’m shopping around.
“Clerical error” sounds like BS. If you’re eligible look at USAA. Also check with the AAA club in Missouri (usually your annual membership fee for AAA would essentially be rebated to you as a “dividend”.)
They said it was a mix up with VIN numbers. I’m handling this better than I anticipated.
Check the VIN number on the car vs. the one on your policy. But in any case, you turned 30 this year if I remember right, so that’s a good time to shop around as you should be eligible for non-young person rates. I pay about $88/month, but that’s Nevada, may not have any relevance to Missouri. Beyond USAA and AAA, State Farm and Farmers are generally next on the list.
I switched from State Farm. They offered great discounts, but quoted me X amount for a vehicle, then when I called to add the car the amount went up almost $100 a month for shitty coverage. Turns out I was basically getting state minimum. I switched because I was getting tons more coverage for <$100. I should have known something was up. Honestly, I just wanted out of State Farm, too. I signed up for medical insurance over the phone when I was going to nursey school. I went in to pay for it and THEN they told me I was too fat for coverage. They're lucky I didn't burn the place down on the way out... probably because my thighs were rubbing together.
pfft…car insurance is for (REDACTED).
You won’t think that when 16-year-old Miss Arkansas drives off to pick up her boyfriend.
As long as she packing heat I’m cool.
So instead of going on summer campouts and grilling marshmallows, Girl Scout troops apparently now rent VRBO townhouses like the one across the street and belt out “Don’t Stop Believin”. It’s gonna be a long night.

It turns out “Don’t Stop Believin” was being sung for a reason. The sounds of tonight’s show down at Harvey’s are filtering into my living room right now. The Steve Miller Band is opening and Journey will follow. We do get some of the bigger current names (Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Rascal Flatts are all upcoming) but there’s plenty of Boston and Aerosmith on the calendar too.

I want to thank Braum’s for that long strand of hair in my chicken sandwich today…I may never eat food again.
You sure it wasn’t yours, B?
Hmm…well, I haven’t had a long stand of hair in this decade so I’m ruling myself out. All I know is I’m still grossed out.
True story: someone at work found a pair of dentures in the salad on the salad bar.
I found a cockroach in a chili at Wendy’s in the early 80’s…I’ve never eaten there since.
Tell us more about this Braum’s. I’m always intrigued by regional restaurant chains I’ve never heard of before. Seems like more of an Oklahoma thing?
They have good fries and ice cream…this is the first time I’ve had an issue with them. I eat there probably 5-6 times a year. I’d say it’s a slightly better version of Carl’s Jr.
Is Arkansas a Carl’s Jr. state or a Hardee’s state?

You probably eat Hellmann’s and Edy’s too. Weirdos.

We had them in Kansas. If you order anything other than ice cream there, you take your life in your hands.
That’s on you for eating anything other than ice cream at a Braum’s.
I think the Raiders can win 7 games this season if everything goes right. I think they’ll end up winning 6. A lot depends on Matt Schaub being at least league average, and MJD and McFadden being mostly healthy. The defense will be towards the low end of the middle of the pack. The main thing I want to see this year is better effort and some young players becoming building blocks for the future.
Sometimes it’s better not to make a new addition.
Corn Dog or Bagel Dog?
Corn.
Thanks, and go As.
I like them both but yes, corn is my answer as well.
There is something called a lobster dog at Lollapalooza this weekend. I’m scaroused.
Make sure you file a full report for us here at Free Kraut.
Corn dogs are one of life’s great pleasures. Ideally the ones at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
Corn dogs are really my main reason for ever going to a State Fair.
Accurate. I used to bug my mom to buy the frozen ones for home, but without owning a deep fryer, I was always left disappointed by the results.

That would have been my second choice.
I’m not saying The West Wing is the best show ever but I think it might be the most rewatchable so I’ll go with it for my desert island TV show.
It’s up there. MASH is up there. The Simpsons is up there. The Sopranos is up there.
It needs to be long, good, and rewatchable. Simpsons wins #1 going away, but a fair number of the seasons suck. It’d still probably be my vote.
I agree with MASH and The Simpsons…as much as I loved The Sopranos I have no interest in watching it again. It’s a dark show and for rewatchability I want something fun and uplifting.
I loved MASH, right up ’til the last episode, during which I kept praying that the thing would just END ALREADY.
but… but… breakthrough TV moment… they said BITCH!
and if you’re like me, as disappointed as the end was, that you tried after mash for three full episodes before really calling it.
Oh that was just agony.
Simpsons is definitely #1 even with all the dreck.

Best football movie ever made?
That one where Warren Beatty is a ghost? Hell, I don’t know.
It’s tough…most of the great sports movies are about baseball and boxing with a couple of good basketball movies. Off the top of my head I’ll go Friday Night Lights which hit the trifecta of being a great book, movie, and TV show.
I’d also think about Rudy, Brian’s Song, and North Dallas Forty.
The Best of Times
Solid choice…Kurt Russell is great in that movie.
Is there more than one great boxing movie? I kind of hated Million Dollar Baby.
Rocky, Cinderella Man, The Fighter, The Harder They Fall, Requiem For A Heavyweight, Rocky II, and The Hurricane.
Completely forgot about Rocky (which I haven’t seen). I was thinking Raging Bull.
I figured you meant Raging Bull. I’d say see Rocky, it really is a great movie. I loved Million Dollar Baby too but it’s a movie with both fans and detractors.
I think I just don’t care for Clint’s style. I also thought Gran Torino was laughably bad, and that one where he’s the reporter for the Oakland Tribune – yikes.
True Crime…yeah, not a good movie. I’m a huge Clint fan but he’s made some stinkers.
No joke, I got detention in high school when my English teacher said the number of recent boxing movies made it a more American sport than baseball and I scoffed.

Best soccer movie ever made?
Trainspotting
That’s one of those movies I’ve never gotten around to seeing.
I loved it 20 years ago or whatever. It’s not actually a soccer movie, but there is a scene of the characters playing soccer, and in the book they get in a fight because they rep Hibs over Hearts. Or Hearts over Hibs. Can’t remember which.
I’d like to see it one of these days. I’m surprised I haven’t because during the time it came out I saw almost every movie.

Worst movie you’ve seen more than once?
I saw this movie twice in one day, in the theater.
Did you get stuck to your chair or did a small stroke cause you to stay in your seat for the second showing?
I was about 12. I think my friends and I went to see a matinee, and then I got home and whoever was taking care of me said “we’re going to the movies” and when we got there it turned out we were seeing this thing again. Not a good movie, but it was still peak Willis so not terrible.
You’re right it’s not an awful movie and Willis was still more David Addison than Generic Action Hero back then.
ha! yeah… remember when they were trying to sell bruce as a comic misfit? moonlighting worked, they tried it in the big screen, suddenly they were, ok… this isn’t selling, how about we make him walk on broken glass first?
This one was one too many in the series.
Heh…all I remember about that movie is them singing Row, Row Your Boat and some pretty dodgy special effects.
Holy crap was that a bad movie. I’m pretty sure I didn’t subject myself to it a second time.
It’s still not my least favorite Star Trek movie though. That last one they made with The Next Gen cast bored me to tears.
That one is so universally panned among Trekkers that I avoided it entirely.
I’m a very casual Trek fan but I do enjoy it for the most part. That movie was so dull…it was the first time I saw Tom Hardy in a movie however. Not a career highlight for him I’m thinking.
Hardy was solid in that.
I probably saw every TV episode of TOS and I, II, III and IV at least 4 times, way back when. Pretty sure I cut off V after two viewings.
I is not much fun either.
Star Trek: The Motionless Picture.
It’s kind of awesome for being what it is, though. It’s just not what you expect out of a sci-fi blockbuster type of flick. I love movies like that, which would never get made today, but are kind of funky cool in their own way.
I’ll watch a bit of Wrath of Khan anytime I see it on TV…it’s a great movie.
The Van
I hope you’re talking about this The Van, and not this The Van.
I don’t know if I saw the second one, but I liked the book
first one reminds me of the first movie i saw at a theater in the US. it was my birthday and it was R rated and we went with my best friend and his mom, moms sitting in the row behind us, and it was so awkward.
looking at the listing now, sterling hayden, howie mandell, sutherland, the XO of galactica when he was but an enlisted man, dick wolf, etc., it’s hard (easy) to believe the movie was so bad.
Yes, I’m talking about the “Fun Trucking” one. Not only is it a HORRIBLE movie, it has the added bonus of getting Sammy John’s song “Chevy Van” stuck in your head not just for hours, but for years.
An old Chevy van blocked our driveway last night, giving me the chance to introduce Nurse Upgrade to this classic example of the 70’s mellow rock genre.
I don’t know what surprises me more – that someone replied to a comment from 2014 or that it wasn’t andeux
Good god how did you remember this!! LOL
Ranking the Star Trek Movies…because why not?
1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
2. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
3. Star Trek; First Contact
4. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
5. Star Trek: The JJ Reboot
6. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
7. Star Trek Generations
8. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
9. Star Trek Into Blowing Shit Up
10. Star Trek: Insurrection
11. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
12. Star Trek: Nemesis
I’m realizing that I don’t really like any of the movies that much, or at least I find them all less fun than the TV shows at their best.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every episode of the original series. I saw bits and pieces of the next gen show. I never saw the middle two, which I know exist, but I can’t remember their names. I saw about 20 episodes or so of the one with Scott Bakula mainly because I really liked Quantum Leap.
Deep Space Nine is really good. Arguably better than Next Generation. Voyager is god awful.
Okay…right, those are the names. I’ve heard Deep Space Nine is good. I might one of these years go back and watch all The Next Generation episodes. I liked what I saw but I never caught up with it when it was on.
Definitely don’t watch all of them. You can skip most of the first two seasons.
Good to know…it gets better when The Borg show up is what everybody tells me.
Big time, though are still some terrible episodes after they arrive. Anything involving Counselor Troi’s mother for example.
I think it’s on Netflix…I’ll see if Miss Hawaii wants to watch it too.
All of them are on Netflix now.
Cool…after I get back from my work trips I might start digging in.
For someone who’s never seen any Star Trek whatsoever, where would you recommend starting?
I’m not a big original series guy, so I would probably say Next Generation. Alternatively, you could start with a few of the very best original series eps and then move on to Next Generation.
at the final frontier.
no really, that’s a tough question. i am the 3rd season of TOS from having seen every single ep of all the franchises and my fist thought is… RUN! but my actual advice is that there’s no need to get encyclopedic that early in the game, and a typical web survey of best eps from the franchises would do you fine. don’t worry about not knowing the characters yet, just dive in. and then go to TNG and cycle through with TOS last if you actually do like them.
This is a good approach except that I wouldn’t take a scattershot approach with DS9. It’s serialized enough that I would watch them in order and just skip handful of really awful episodes in Seasons 1-3.
truth.
Ok thanks. I usually prefer to watch things in some sort of order, but on the other hand, there are a lot of Star Trek episodes/series out there. Might be better to see some of the good first if the beginning of the best series starts slow
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Watch the remainder of the TOS movies, then watch TNG. You’ll have to slog through some pretty rough stuff, but it’s worth it.
Yep. I didn’t hate Voyager as much as I expected to, and DS9 stands up WAY WAY WAY better than TNG (which feels pretty dated now, and is best experienced as a childhood memory). The newest series is fine but has bizarre soft-core scenes sprinkled all over the place.
DS9 is so much better than I realized at the time. Really fantastic writing and acting.
Yep. Picard is the best actor the series ever had, but DS9 probably has the next 4 entries.
DS9 also had great recurring guest stars: Garak and Wynn in particular.
I’ve been slowly rewatching DS9, and dammit if this one didn’t make me cry like a baby just the way it did when it first aired. The only difference is that back then I was seeing it from Jake’s perspective, and this time I saw it from Sisko’s perspective.
Related: How in the hell is Tony Todd not more famous? He’s ridiculously good in this.
those condensed lives episodes really get to us.
DS9 is great… though I found the giant war dissatisfying.
I just got to “In the Pale Moonlight” in my sloooow DS9 rewatch. I don’t think I saw it when it aired. Holy mother of god is it good.
Picard makes TNG extremely worth it, even when the show is bad.
I still say watch the first couple seasons to get a feel for how the characters grew and developed. A lot of that is built off of in the later seasons.
You’re right of course. A couple of the best episodes wouldn’t resonate at all without having spent some time with the characters in the first two seasons. I’m always worried, though, that people will give up after some of the particularly lousy early eps.
yeah, you don’t get the possibly poly relationship between troi and riker in the later seasons, which is essential comedy and you don’t want to miss it.
Anyone who could plow through some of those TOS episodes should be able to stomach the first two seasons of TNG.
What extra-sucks about all this is that one of the episodes you definitely need to see, the one where Tasha dies, is also a really bad episode.
Missed this at the time, but THIS.
Im rewatching TNG now… and yes the Tasha death is terribad
TNG and DS9 are worth seeing in their entirety. Voyager is bizarrely boring. Enterprise has Scott Bakula.
Voyager pisses me off because the idea had so much potential (constantly changing/unknown external scenarios, for example) but they just kept spinning off the same shit as though early-season characters were ALSO sprinting towards earth at top speed.
Ranking the Star Wars Movies…because it feels like the right thing to do.
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Star Wars
3. Return of the Jedi
50 feet of crap
4-6. Those other ones.
I think I saw part of ep I and then never saw abnother in the series
I saw all of them but only once. The first one is beyond awful, I don’t remember what the second one was even about, and the third one was in color.
With the exception of Jar Jar, I think II may be worse than I. It should have been better and it just is horrible. Even ass kicking Yoda cant save it.
I seem to remember a lot of scenes in the senate…which is what all of us were asking for in the 70’s and 80’s…these Star Wars movies need more scenes set in the senate.
Princess Leia: “The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this!”
Theater audiences: Ooooooh, I can’t wait for the Imperial Senate!
That’s why those movies did so horribly. No fucking Imperial Senate scenes. Good to see that George learned his lesson.
Bed’s ranking still holds up-you just have to change 4-6 to 4-9.
I hate most things on television these days.
There’s so much TV now that a lot of it will be awful. There are a lot of really good shows on in my mind though.

Interesting that you picked Casino for Scorsese. It’s one of those movies I love half of. I think the first half is great but the last hour is cliched and mediocre.
that’s what i liked about the question. you have to pick something.
for me, it’s not a great movie, weak ending like you said, and every time the voiceover comes on i want to go somewhere else.
It’s a fun question to think about. Scorsese has never made a movie I flat out hated but I guess I’d go with Shutter Island as my least favorite Scorsese film. The book is much better.
that’s the tough part of the question. the reminder that there are actually one or two movies out there i still haven’t seen. in the case of de palma, i couldn’t answer because there are too many that could still be worse than the wedding party (or scarface).
DePalma is all over the place. He’s made some absolute classics and some movies not good enough to be shown at a drive in at midnight in Topeka.
all. over. the place.
I love Casino and The Fly.

But this is a billion dollar facility built in 2011-14. It should serve the 21st centure realities of larger populations and the absolute need for mass transit to the park.
I mean, you can’t really blame the team for the Bay Area’s shitty mass transit system
Thanks, and go As.
True. But you can blame the team for the location they chose, which is what I’m guessing Mr. Ed’s point was.
Where is a better location for a football stadium though? Capacity for a football stadium is around twice that of a baseball-only field, and because games are typically a weekly affair on a Sunday (or Saturday for college), tailgating is a much bigger part of the culture. It’s tough to find a location that can accommodate that much parking and also has good public transit access. The Coliseum does, obviously, but that’s pretty rare.
the coliseum is a place.
the old san mateo fairgrounds was also a place then that fit the bill.
just eyeballing, I think there was at least one more location on the caltrain stem.
Also, some of the UCSF campus area near ATT was alright at the time.
Somehow I don’t think the Niners could have gotten the Coliseum as a site for a new stadium.
Thanks, and go As.
You lie! They never tried!
this is where my argument breaks down. I think football is pretty dumb and I don’t think it should be given any public support.
Have them all play in Omaha like the college world series.
