The Lounge where we named the dog Indiana 494

I spent the day at the dentist getting some teeth pulled so I can better fit in here in the South. Tomorrow I’m getting some tats and marrying my second cousin. Here’s a lounge for folks to talk about grammar, the weather, and Rick James. Lounge em’ if you got em’.

    I always appreciate that mini floss package they hand out after a visit to the dentist. It’s nice to know they care enough to give 6 inches of floss.

      I’ve never understood why they give me a 2 year’s supply of floss every time I show up either. They must think Im Luke and I need to swing across where that bridge was in Star Wars daily.

    Out of curiosity, last year how much would it have cost to get 2 sets of tickets for all the home playoff games? I’m thinking 3rd deckish (not expensive). And as part of the season ticket plan do we have a special right for that? Trying to figure out what I may or may not be able to do for this year so I want to get some sort of baseline.

        If you’re planning, keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of the cost is WS tickets (which they reimburse if the team doesn’t get there). I think my bleacher strip was in the range of $9 for WC $12 for ALDS, $25 for ALCS, and $85 for WS.

        • 5Aces Jul 28,2014 1:25 pm || Up

          Ok that is a good point because WHEN we get to the series if I really was short I could probably flip one game and get some $ back. And we would be reimbursed for 6 and 7 after we sweep, etc.

          • nevermoor Jul 28,2014 1:26 pm || Up

            Yeah. I would expect you could make a significant profit (even post-SH fees) on a WS ticket.

            And yes, that’s right about the unplayed games.

            Really really hoping the refund is smaller this year.

    Just saw a tweet from Heyman that Burns is getting called up. This confuses me. I agree with the comments in the other thread that as soon as he gets here defenses play the . shift and he is in trouble. And if he is ever going to be successful he needs lots of ABs to figure that out and he should NOT be getting them here this year.

    Hoping this is Heyman being a moran.

                  Rangers broadcasters were surprised Melvin didn’t challenge. Replay clearly showed the bat had been pulled back and the ball hit him entirely on the hand.

                • vignette17 Jul 28,2014 2:35 pm || Up

                  Is that challenge-able? If they called it a swing it definitely is NOT.

                • AV Jul 28,2014 2:53 pm || Up

                  if he offered, the hand is part of the bat and cannot be HBP.

                  but determining whether it was offered at or not, i think that’s the part that’s not reviewable. i think.

                  *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
                • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 28,2014 4:02 pm || Up

                  The Rangers broadcasters were saying that you can’t challenge whether or not he bunted, but you can challenge whether it was an HBP.

                • dmoas Jul 28,2014 4:34 pm || Up

                  Making an attempt on the ball by rule invalidates any HBP. So if they ruled he swung (not reviewable) then the results of a replay that showing he was hit become irrelevant.

                • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 28,2014 6:16 pm || Up

                  Based on the various play-by-play logs I looked at, it appears that the pitch was ruled a foul bunt. You’re saying that negates the ability to ask for an HBP call to overrule the foul bunt call?

                • Future Ed Jul 28,2014 6:24 pm || Up

                  I think the stringers that write the pxp don’t have a button for “ruled an offer but it hit the dudes hand so its a strike”

                  The rule is, if you swing at the pitch that hits you, its a strike, regardless of where it hits you. Since it was ruled a swing the question of weather or not it hit him is moot

                  I have $5. No I don\'t.
                • dmoas Jul 28,2014 9:15 pm || Up

                  It’s not considered a HBP if it’s ruled a swing. It was likely ruled a “swing” or an “attempt” so therefore it would be considered a foul even though it hit is hand.

          I just don’t really dig Kaep. I blame him for both of our last two postseason losses. If he has gained enough self-awareness to know what he can do and what he can’t do, then we might be going places. Otherwise, I still miss Alex.

          • vignette17 Jul 28,2014 3:25 pm || Up

            The turnovers in the 4th last year hurt a lot, but without Kaep’s legs in the first half, I’m not sure they’re in the game at all. I mean, look how Peyton did against them. Kaep was certainly better than that.

            • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 28,2014 4:03 pm || Up

              I’m talking about his poor decisionmaking at the end. Throwing to Crabtree made zero sense.

              • MikeV Jul 28,2014 4:31 pm || Up

                1 on 1 coverage is fine.

                Fade routes are dumb. At the same time Sherman made a fantastic play.

                He’s so much better than Smith is it’s silly.

                • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 28,2014 6:19 pm || Up

                  If memory serves, Kaep had other options to throw to, or could even have tried to run it in himself. It was a bad decision and I feel like he makes a LOT of those as a passer. Alex does not. I’ll take the un-flashy guy who almost threw a perfect game over the guy who can run and make the occasional spectacular pass but also throws stupid interceptions every other week. Kaep has got to understand what his limitations are, or maybe just what the limitations of reality are.

                  Honestly, I kind of wish we could have kept both and try to figure out a way to invent an offense that maximizes both of them for what they do well. There are situations in which I want Kaepernick and there are situations in which I want Alex.

                • dmoas Jul 28,2014 9:18 pm || Up

                  He seems to bend under heavy “pressure.” Not fold or break, mind you, but when it’s a key moment in the game he grows tunnel vision. And that tends to lead him to force things he shouldn’t.

                • nevermoor Jul 29,2014 1:01 pm || Up

                  There is no question that last year he did not succeed at staying in the pocket and going through progressions to find an open man.

                  The question is how to spread blame across: (1) lack of an open man b/c receivers sucked; (2) lack of time b/c pass coverage sucked; (3) lack of progression passing ability b/c he sucks; (4) lack of patience because he is awesome at running/has a huge arm.

                  Hopefully we will learn a lot more about him this year, and have another great season. Also, the point about how much better he looked against SEA than legitimate god-of-progession-passing Peyton Manning is not to be ignored.

                  Kaep had 8 INT last year.

                  Smith had 7.

                  This could be confirmation bias, but Kaep’s interceptions have always seemed very stupid and avoidable. Smith’s don’t (anymore.)

                • MikeV Jul 29,2014 8:09 am || Up

                  That’s because Smith isn’t good enough to try the throws that Kaep does.

                  Thanks, and go As.

                • dmoas Jul 29,2014 8:24 am || Up

                  Dumb ones? That really doesn’t make much sense. A throw is either a good/smart one or not. Whether Kaep can try a particular one that Smith can’t doesn’t mean that an interception while trying to force a harder throw is smart.

                • MikeV Jul 29,2014 8:32 am || Up

                  and yet he only threw 1 more INT than Smith did, had a much higher yards/attempt, a higher QB rating if that’s your thing, etc…

                • dmoas Jul 29,2014 10:57 am || Up

                  I should point out something though.

                  1) Kaep *is* the better quarterback, I agree with you on that one.
                  2) But I also don’t think right now he’s much better than Smith. Different strengths and weaknesses mostly balance out.
                  3) Kaep is still very young and inexperienced (despite his credentials) and has plenty of time through hard work to shorten up his weaknesses whereas Smith is who he is. More than anything that’s what gives Kaep an edge in any debate.
                  4) Interceptions in the NFL are grossly flawed stat. There are multiple types of interceptions and they really fail to count that. A direct interception that’s made because the foolish QB basically through it directly at the defender. A read interception where a poorly planned pass would read correctly by the defense and snagged before the offense could get it. Both of which are failures of the QB. Then there’s the indirect/tips where the pass was fine and on target. Got to the receiver only for it to get clanked or tipped either by the receiver directly or by a lucky defender only for it to fall into the hands of the defense. Those really aren’t on the QB.
                  5) It’s entirely the eyes talking here (i.e. zero sourced foundation) but most of Smith’s have been the indirect kind whereas most of Kaep’s have been the direct kind.

                • MikeV Jul 29,2014 11:12 am || Up

                  5) Except for the one that people bring up the most, which was actually a great play by Dick Sherman.

                  And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

                  Thanks, and go As.

                • dmoas Jul 29,2014 11:23 am || Up

                  I *do* think he tried to force it in there. And I think all throughout the game, let alone that drive he had missed opportunities where had he not had tunnel vision for Crabtree, he’d have likely had more success. Ultimate it was a great read by Sherman and a throw that wasn’t quite perfect in a spot that it really had to be. There were bigger mistakes he made in that game than that one and while it ended the game, the other missed opportunities and a couple of major officiating mistakes cost them the game a lot more than that one. But they also flat out don’t get into the position where that one throw matters without Kaep at the helm.

                • nevermoor Jul 29,2014 1:02 pm || Up

                  I’ll buy the forcing point, but the consequence should have been an incomplete pass. I’d bet there are 1-4 CBs who can pick that, and it’s not a 100% pick for even them.

                • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 29,2014 1:32 pm || Up

                  But there was just no reason to throw it there. He had other options.

                • MikeV Jul 29,2014 1:47 pm || Up

                  The reason was Crabtree was lined up in 1 on 1 coverage. Kaep has said that multiple times.

                  I want a QB that has the confidence to throw the ball to his #1 receiver in 1v1 coverage. Again, Sherman made a fantastic play.

                  And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

              This past year I just don’t think we had the WRs. Shouldn’t be an issue this year (though we may not have the RBs this year when Gore realizes he’s cooked)

                • nevermoor Jul 29,2014 1:04 pm || Up

                  I think he’s lasted amazingly long already (possibly because he never relied on top-end speed) and has seen his ability to break tackles go away. He could still sneak through holes and fall forward last year, but if he loses much of either skill he’s in real trouble.

                  It sucks that Hunter is out for the year already and Lattimore’s knee doesn’t seem to be cooperating. Looks like it’s gonna be the Gore/Hyde/LMJ show.

          I’d rather do Cespedes in left, Reddick in center, someone in right. Reddick may not be great out there (I don’t even remember), but he has a good arm and much better hustle. Center is not a place I like to see someone who doesn’t put out a lot of effort on catching balls.

            About 35% of me thinks that Cespy will respond to getting to play CF everyday like it’s being in NY and he will start hustling to everything. About 25% of me thinks it is going to end up bad. And the rest is hoping Coco is ok and it wont matter in the long run (a series against Houston is a good start).

    a tiny bit of a roundup because, gosh, i miss it already.

    the big news, sabella said no. and everyone is calling for pekerman. (me too.)

    (if you missed it, parallel news are that dunga is back to replace scolari.)

    tevez’s dad got kidnapped for 8 hours, is now free. carlitos paid about U$ 50K.

    san lorenzo is going to la paz to play bolívar in the 2nd leg of their copa libertadores semifinal, up 5–0 in the aggregate over the bolivians. but, as we know, la paz is way up in the air (2 miles or so) and it’s hard for visiting teams. and when i say hard, i mean difficult. but that’s not what san lorenzo wants, they want hard to mean like a rock, and even up in altitude, they want to keep it up for up to 2 hours, maybe longer if there’s an extension. so what are they going to do? why, take viagra of course.

    palacio comes out and admits he got hurt during the last friendly and played hurt all through the tournament.

    PSG wants di maría and is trying to sell lavezzi.

    messi is still dealing with the spanish courts over possible tax evasion/fraud (that his dad may have perpetrated in his name).

    ronaldinho is done with mineiro and is looking for a new home. early rumors involve river/boca in argentina, the middle east, or… MLS?

    he’s doing better than riquelme, whom boca didn’t renew, and has signed on with his youth team argentino juniors (playing in B), and… won’t be able to play till the 3rd game in because of a knee thing. it’s kinda sad to see him trying to not retire when he can only play once or twice a month. sigh.

    that’s that. hope a better baseball game today than yesterday gets me back on track. i swear i watched highlights of 4×200 meters freestyle relays last night looking for something to do in case baseball becomes threatening to my well being the rest of this season. i don’t know man… coming back to that scoreline last night really kinda hurt.

          That’s a major drag if Manu doesn’t play. I thought he was in since he’s listed on the roster. That’s a very old team, though, with or without him.

      first time since 2004 that there will be a copa libetadores final without a brazilian team. even more shocking, this was the first time since 1991 that a brazilian team didn’t reach the semifinals. is there a crisis in brazilian talent?? though that’s not great measure since 1991 was only a few years before 1994.

          I haven’t kept track of the LA stadium debate, but logically he (or the Jacksonville owner) should get together with U$C and build a Super Bowl-worthy stadium on the LA Coliseum site. UCLA, U$C, the Raiders or Jaguars and the Rose Bowl game could all share the Rose Bowl for a couple years.

          What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
          • dmoas Jul 29,2014 4:10 pm || Up

            NFL itself is flirting with the idea of building their own stadium there. Then leasing it to a few teams, utilizing it for bowl games and the Super Bowl rotation. That way they can build it prior to announcing a team coming. Odds are low that it happens, but there was recent talk of it.

                I think for it to work you need to have two teams in Europe so American teams could go over for there for two weeks with a bye week coming back. Maybe one in England and one in Germany.

                • dmoas Jul 29,2014 4:59 pm || Up

                  That really makes the most sense. If they really plan on doing it, they need to work a lot more a spreading the brand across Europe on the whole. Ideally you’d see a full division there. I suspect at some point it’ll happen. There’s only so much revenue growth you can achieve if you remain within the continental US. And they’re run by some ready MFers.

      Why would you relocate or replace 100% of your staff and lose 99.5% of your current ticket buyers to move to a stadium with fewer suites in a much smaller market, with fewer potential corporate sponsors, just in hopes of a better deal on a new stadium in a few years? Moving to Santa Clara would be a much easier solution, moving to LA would be less complicated. And there’s no reason why the Raiders can’t stay at the Coliseum and complain about dirt on their field for as long as they want.

    • Soaker Jul 29,2014 7:21 pm || Up

      “Clerical error” sounds like BS. If you’re eligible look at USAA. Also check with the AAA club in Missouri (usually your annual membership fee for AAA would essentially be rebated to you as a “dividend”.)

          Check the VIN number on the car vs. the one on your policy. But in any case, you turned 30 this year if I remember right, so that’s a good time to shop around as you should be eligible for non-young person rates. I pay about $88/month, but that’s Nevada, may not have any relevance to Missouri. Beyond USAA and AAA, State Farm and Farmers are generally next on the list.

            I switched from State Farm. They offered great discounts, but quoted me X amount for a vehicle, then when I called to add the car the amount went up almost $100 a month for shitty coverage. Turns out I was basically getting state minimum. I switched because I was getting tons more coverage for <$100. I should have known something was up. Honestly, I just wanted out of State Farm, too. I signed up for medical insurance over the phone when I was going to nursey school. I went in to pay for it and THEN they told me I was too fat for coverage. A lot depends on Matt Schaub being at least league average, and MJD and McFadden being mostly healthy. The defense will be towards the low end of the middle of the pack. at the final frontier.

                  no really, that’s a tough question. i am the 3rd season of TOS from having seen every single ep of all the franchises and my fist thought is… RUN! but my actual advice is that there’s no need to get encyclopedic that early in the game, and a typical web survey of best eps from the franchises would do you fine. don’t worry about not knowing the characters yet, just dive in. and then go to TNG and cycle through with TOS last if you actually do like them.

                  This is a good approach except that I wouldn’t take a scattershot approach with DS9. It’s serialized enough that I would watch them in order and just skip handful of really awful episodes in Seasons 1-3.

                  Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Watch the remainder of the TOS movies, then watch TNG. You’ll have to slog through some pretty rough stuff, but it’s worth it.

                  Yep. I didn’t hate Voyager as much as I expected to, and DS9 stands up WAY WAY WAY better than TNG (which feels pretty dated now, and is best experienced as a childhood memory). The newest series is fine but has bizarre soft-core scenes sprinkled all over the place.

                  Yep. Picard is the best actor the series ever had, but DS9 probably has the next 4 entries.

                  DS9 also had great recurring guest stars: Garak and Wynn in particular.

                  I’ve been slowly rewatching DS9, and dammit if this one didn’t make me cry like a baby just the way it did when it first aired. The only difference is that back then I was seeing it from Jake’s perspective, and this time I saw it from Sisko’s perspective.

                  Related: How in the hell is Tony Todd not more famous? He’s ridiculously good in this.

                  Picard makes TNG extremely worth it, even when the show is bad.

              • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 30,2014 7:55 pm || Up

                I still say watch the first couple seasons to get a feel for how the characters grew and developed. A lot of that is built off of in the later seasons.

                • Glorious Mundy Jul 30,2014 7:59 pm || Up

                  You’re right of course. A couple of the best episodes wouldn’t resonate at all without having spent some time with the characters in the first two seasons. I’m always worried, though, that people will give up after some of the particularly lousy early eps.

                • AV Jul 30,2014 8:21 pm || Up

                  yeah, you don’t get the possibly poly relationship between troi and riker in the later seasons, which is essential comedy and you don’t want to miss it.

                  Anyone who could plow through some of those TOS episodes should be able to stomach the first two seasons of TNG.

                  What extra-sucks about all this is that one of the episodes you definitely need to see, the one where Tasha dies, is also a really bad episode.

          TNG and DS9 are worth seeing in their entirety. Voyager is bizarrely boring. Enterprise has Scott Bakula.

          • nevermoor Jul 31,2014 9:40 am || Up

            Voyager pisses me off because the idea had so much potential (constantly changing/unknown external scenarios, for example) but they just kept spinning off the same shit as though early-season characters were ALSO sprinting towards earth at top speed.

              Where is a better location for a football stadium though? Capacity for a football stadium is around twice that of a baseball-only field, and because games are typically a weekly affair on a Sunday (or Saturday for college), tailgating is a much bigger part of the culture. It’s tough to find a location that can accommodate that much parking and also has good public transit access. The Coliseum does, obviously, but that’s pretty rare.
