It’s a Game Thread! It’s a Grill! It’s a Lounge! Because America, damnit. Fuck yeah! Everybody who’s a big league American take one step forward!
(Not so fast, Stephen Vogt. Sacramento is lovely in July).
They hate us for our freedoms. Or at least, for our satellite TV packages and illegal internet streams. There’s a baseball game on somewhere all day long…I myself am enjoying a little Nats v Brew Crew right now.
America! Where we don’t have to be slaves to fashion.
America! Where we support local law enforcement by pre-packaging our bad guys for easy pickup.
America! Where we will get totally crapulous when the occasion demands.
America! Where we’re not afraid to fuck the same horse twice. Editor’s note: Texas is not America. Gross.
America! Where though the Coco fro may come and go, we’ll always have Angela Davis.
Crisp CF, Lowrie 2B, Donaldson 3B, Cespedes LF, Freiman 3B, Young RF, Norris C, Smith DH, Rosales SS. Straily P.
Can FSU have $1.05?
Tahoe is for the most part a great place to live but there are a few days that are pure hell, including the four starting today (NYE being the other big one), as I was quickly reminded on my morning walk. The sheriff was already setting up roadblocks at 10 a.m., adding to the befuddlement of our crapulous visitors.
I shall hunker down for a few hours until the end of the game, then will head up to the Biggest Little City and after a little time in a tippling house, will spend the night up there before the early flight to KC tomorrow.
I can see a Disney movie in the Romeo & Juliet mold: Cirilo and Nadia. The ending will have to be Disneyified. I’m thinking Cirilo riding Nadia under a sunset.
He needs to learn that neigh means neigh.
I lol’d
Fascinating that they had to charge him with cruelty, because Texas does not have a bestiality statute.
Of course it doesn’t.

In other Tejas news, my elder daughter is visiting friends in Austin — I once got her the t-shirt: “Well-behaved women rarely make history.” She seems to have taken it to heart.
Cool.
Nice
wait, your daughter lives in austin, Dr. K’s daughter lives in austin. what the hell?
they seem about the same age
She’s visiting from NYC, but when she was here recently she sounded like she was growing tired of The City. Austin would be in the running, as is Santa Barbara, but moving decisions come hard, and she’s now in the NY Bar. I could see her moving to Austin to work with Wendy Davis, but I’ll guess the application line for that job stretches from here to yonder — of which there is a great deal in Texas.
How can she be tired of The City? San Francisco is amazing!
so is New York. Winky face
It’s aight.
if you like saxophones
Especially if you like getting pushed in front of the subway.
Or if you want to get mugged or murdered.
Thank you, Brother Gimcrack!
(And I mean that in the good way…)
Those July 4th red white and blue home A’s hats are definitely not my thing, but I’ve seen much worse. Please, though, they had better be paired with the home white uniforms. Because a green or gold jersey with that hat would be hideous.
Obviously I think any use of red whatsoever is a heinous crime against Athletics Baseball.
Yes on the home whites today, thank God. Also Stomper is sporting a nice Uncle Sam hat.
Not to mention a compound violation of the Marin County Fair Dress Code.
The Marin County Fair is kind of awful, but I’ve never run into problems there with biker gangs or white supremacists.
Awful is pushing it. I had fun there as a youff.
I imagine it has only gotten more Marin over the years, though.
Yeah, I had some good times there back in the day, but as an adult with children no thanks.
Like all suburbs it is destroying America
Holy crap, that’s quite a list of threatening gangs and their colors symbols and catchphrases. I did not realize the Marin County Fair was under such siege.
TIL some gang members go through some kind of “certification” process.
Funny how they think gang members don’t wear Giants and 49ers gear.
The supes obviously thought that by including enough detail they would be able to get away with ejecting any hispanic or asian kids who look at all non-affluent.
We’re taking Lily with the grandparents tomorrow – I’ll be sure she wears her A’s cap and we’ll see what ensues.
Put her in a Mark Ellis jersey, too.
But those “Tiny Rascal Gangsters” are so darn adorable!
Can confirm home whites. It still looks completely terrible though.
Somebody is paying them to wear red sleeve wraps too. At least Cespedes, Reddick and Norris that I’ve seen so far.
Steve Vucinich handed those out, they keep your elbow warm apparently.
Cespedes is wearing green sleeves. He does have a red thing on his right elbow though.
Ah, yeah, misread that. I think it’s a health thing.
That lower arm wrap is half-red and has a logo prominently displayed. It’s not a swoosh and I’m afraid I’m not hip enough to know all the other cool fashion logos.
It’s Phiten, of course!
Link
Cubs catcher too. His is on his non-throwing arm.
So I’ve decided that Cespedes must have been hungover yesterday.
Haha
wow
Shot. 5-Hole. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLl
The colors on the tarps are really popping on the blimp shot. I wonder if they did a touch up recently.
The Angela Davis article was fascinating, thank you FSU!!!!
To his credit Vince is having a tough time containing his disdain for these ludicrous caps.
Darwin Barney = cute, yumz
Darwin Barney > Kerwin Danley
I’m pretty sure nobody won’t be blowing any umpires.
No, but I would play with Barney’s dinosaur,
Till it was big and purple?
you bet ;)
So the cubs have a black bill. The A’s a red. Give the A’s the black bill and the cubs, who have red in their color scheme, the red bill. If you’re going to do this ugly shit, do it right.
This makes me kind of glad I’m stuck with radio this afternoon
I haven’t seen any other games today but I assume all home teams have red bills today; that’s how it’s worked in the past.
I’m sure it is, which is just stupid.
The Diamondbacks are wearing red bills as the road team, so who knows.
I don’t think you guys know this, but according to Ray, *today* is America’s birthday.
Shit! I didn’t get it anything.
Thanks, and go As.
Jesus Christ…
In fairness…
Cant find it right now, but there was another oerson who said “There wasnt a year 0, so America is only 2012 #themoreyouknow”.
Now it all makes sense.
False on so many levels. I love it.
exactly
Coming into today, Rosales has been exactly replacement level, according to fangraphs. Better than I think!
sad
Someone wake me when this game starts.
It seems like the A’s are dressed like the nurses’ softball team in M*A*S*H. I’m having a difficult time taking this one seriously as well.
TWSCS (That’s what Starlin Castro said).
… on second base.
I was going to comment that Vince called that play pretty well, but then he forced a “DeNo” in there.
On TV, we had the obligatory “Have a day, Derek Norris” from Ray.
DeNo? I would wonder why he’s talking about Chris Denorfia.
Sweet blimp shot.
Wait, shouldn’t Soriano have gotten to second on the throw home anyway? The Cubs are terrible.
That’s what I was wondering at the game.
It’s a little warm.
Hah!
So if Norris shaved the beard would he be an exact doppleganger for Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds?
Thanks, and go As.
Norris’ beard grows back before sundown.
That guy with the shirt with Mount Rushmore superimposed on an American flag with a bald eagle flying over it wins July 4.
There’s no wolf on it?
Thanks, and go As.
LOL
No guns?
Yes, Ken, they’ve announced there will be a mule. If you want to pet the thing, make sure you’re not standing behind it.
CATCH THE FUCKING BALL CHRIS
god damn I’m so fucking done with that guy. Go away.
Thanks, and go As.
I’m officially on board, ugh….
Reddick would’ve had that.
Why slide there CY?
I think maybe he lost his footing a little bit crossing the bullpen dirt.
Because of the terrible route he took and the fact he lollygagged his way to the ball.
Nice quick inning Dan-o!
Anthony Recker ties a 13 inning game w/ a dinger, happy for ya’ kid, but why’d it have to be against the D-backs, they coulda’ put SF out 5…
I like how Gibson immediately bunts a runner over to second in the next inning, because obviously a one-run lead will be enough.
Arizona back in the lead 4-3.
And, 4-4.
Gah.
Base hit for Cliffy and it’s 5-4 snakes.
Penny singles in a run! 5-4
I wonder what the record is for most consecutive extra innings scored in.
Hrm, good question.
I still don’t know the answer, but I did learn that the A’s have twice lost by 10 or more runs in extra innings, something that has only happened one other time since 1901.
Ziegler pitching the 15th.
This is just getting weird now.
Finally.
Not very well, at that.
… but only 10 back of a wild-card.
Pretty great no?
Young is fucking useless.
Thanks, and go As.
Simply terri-bad.
Im thinking we should get patches or something that say that.
#YIFU
M O J O!!!
So I know everything changes based on events..but yeah, CY25 scores on that single from second. AND HE WOUKD HAVE BEEN THERE UF HE SAT DOWN ON TH FKIN BASE AND NORRIS GOT WALKED FKFKFK!
K E E B S!
WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
HAVE A DAY, DEREK NORRIS
Coco is DUE.
Damn robbed…
I’m not sure I would pull Straily here.
Cookie!!!
I’m glad Cook was not decapitated. Catching the ball was a bonus.
Nice catch, Cook!!
Glen: “Time out is called because there’s a baseball behind Chris Young…”
Wait… we can just call time out when that happens? How about with Cespedes?
I laughed.
6 moar A’s runz pls.
Honkbal!
Strop me, Strop me.
What a hideous call.
Doesn’t matter except for a few extra pitches, but still, goodness.
Had that gone out I would have laughed forever.
That was a weird ass call.
Wtf?
for those of us at the game, what happened?
I think that was the play where Lowrie hit a grounder fair toward first base and acted like the ball hit him on the foot. The umpire bought the acting job and ruled a foul ball.
No, time was called after the pitch because he quick pitched.
Yeah, I think that’s also what had just happened when I wtf’d, but at this point I don’t remember… :\
Quit swinging at junk guys.
Close it out and shut the door Balfour!
Nothing too exciting please.
2 outs to go.
No obligatory base runner yet.
Trying his best…
Aaaaand there it is.
You had to say it.
I used the singular.
I’m glad Jennifer got to see Balfour Rage Live!
It was beautiful.
It really is, especially when pockets of other sections start to join in.
did you catch the overhead shots of 149?
Yes, those were great!
Yep. Night game rages are the best with the scoreboards going dark. The Tuesday night before division clincher comes to mind.
Let’s DO THIS!
with strikes preferably…
Did they have to show the Schierholz homer clip on CSNCA?
Right? That sucked.
They do it far too often.
That was the series where Fuentes went off on Geren, though, so it’s all good.
It did make a difference, “F. U.” was good for that at least.
Really the pinnacle of his A’s career.
Dammit Lowrie.
He thought Nate was playing first.
Thurmond.
F U C K…
he was out.
This.
Alright, Grant. Earn this one.
Freiman could have caught that without leaving the bag (the fact that he was out anyway notwithstanding).
It was Moss.
Was that not the point?
Oh, right. Duh.
barf
Phew.
Phew!
Well that worked, one way or another. Nice homestand, ladies.
OK, I’m on my way to Kansas City, hope to check in with you FKers from there.
Have fun!
Have a great trip, report back from KC.
I’m sure you’ve done your research, but in case you’ve missed it the Negro Leagues Museum is worth visiting while there. Have a great trip.
And save your ticket stub. JoePos will make out with you if you show him proof you went (or so I heard).
Not that I want that, but I might have to go back and see if I kept my stub from the Negro League Museum.
I went to the Negro Leagues museum several years ago. The Truman Library is the plan for tomorrow morning.
1. Boulevard Brewing tours sold out for the day (not unexpected). The two day games on Sat. and Sun. probably knock that off the list.
2. Too many people have been reading those Oklahoma Joe’s reviews. There was a big crowd inside, I thought all right I’ll wait, but as I followed the line it went out the door and some distance down the hill. Sorry, there are too many other barbecue places in KC to bother with that.
3. Priceline screwed up my hotel reservation (fuck you Shatner) but that was fixed with relative ease.
It’s definitely warm enough to make you sweat but not oppressive. Ask me again after I’ve sat in the sun for two straight day games though.
Have you been to Chappell’s?
Interesting, it might be a place to swing by tomorrow for a postgame beverage. Closed on Sunday unfortunately as it seems a lot of places in this area are.
Definitely give it a look. It’s got a lot of KC A’s stuff, among a whole lot else.
When I visited, Jim Chappell was there. I mentioned coming from California as an A’s fan and he pointed out a few things there for me.

This will give you an idea:
Linking again to the photos I took.
Thank fucking gawd, but please, two hands Young, two hands.
I completely expected Young to drop that.
Look above you, lol.
Woo!
Last year’s A’s were 43-43 at this point, which was the day before the all star break. They would win 10 of the first 11 after the break.
Victory, American style!
The trivia question inspired some research.
In 1934, Lou Gehrig hit .363. with an on-base percentage of .465. He hit 49 home runs, 165 RBIs and had an OPS of 1.172 and a WAR of 10.42.
But the Tigers won the AL, and Gehrig not only didn’t win the MVP but finished fifth.
Oh my god. Not only did three tigers finish ahead of him, including the winner Mickey Cochrane who had a SLG lower than his OBP, but he finished behind a pitcher on his own team. I wonder if Gehrig pooped in the pressbox popcorn before every game or something.
Meh. Everyone knows he was on peds.
“A lull in concentration” – Roberts on the Cubs. Yep. That’s why they lose.
You know those lulls that last for 105 years?
The Chicago Cubs. Come for the pizza, stay for the lullz.
Kuma’ is on the mound vs. the Rangers Perez, get it done Seattle.
7/11. Can you tell I haven’t been on fark.com for a while?
11/11
I clearly need to do more work and spend less time on the internet.
7/11 too. I guess we both subconsciously want a big gulp.
In 1973, this guy didn’t realize he was about to win the internet

Read the post, Ed.
dammit. read the links, ed
Mariners tie it 1-1 on a Kinsler throwing error on a botched double play.
It looked like Kinsler was blaming the runner.
I don’t want Utley anymore. There needs to be a short stop.
Jimmy Rollins Contract is $5.5M this year, $11M next, and a complicated vesting option for 2015.
Just saying
As someone who advocated for this last year, yes please, but I’m getting the feeling he will never agree to a trade out of Philly.
{looks up other above average shortstops on non-contending teams}
Brandon Crawford?
HA!
Texas takes the lead. Moreland pulled an Alex rodriguez and knocked the ball out of Franklin’s (SEA 2B) glove. NO call. Ump was sheilded. Easy call on instant replay.
Just saying
but a great call by the home plate umpire on a play there
5-3 texas
rangers win on a strike 3 called. pitch outside 5 inches. AJ patted the rear of the umpire after the call
Blanco alone left 8 on base, and as a team the Mariners left 23/13.
oh that he would have on FK day
That was a disgusting call.
Ugh…
Me and Nurse Upgrade watched fireworks from Wildcat Peak in Tilden Park. About a three mile hike in to a 360° vantage point. We saw about 12 different cities’ displays…mostly guessing from geography, I’ll say Berkeley, Richmond, San Pablo, San Francisco, Sausalito, Martinez, Vallejo, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, Hayward, Redwood City, San Mateo. Just amazing. Pitch black hike back out just challenging and scary enough to be extra fun. Highly recommend for future Fourths.
The four of us and our guest went to bernal. We saw SF, stuff in the east bay, and a shit ton of illegal stuff that is continuing.
Mt. Tam is really great too, depending on the fog. The last time I was up there to catch a full bay fireworks display was new years eve 1999, I think (crap! that’s like 13 years ago!). I think that I was somewhere slightly uphill from the Mountain Home Inn.
We went up the hill to Cañada College, which had a decent view (definitely not 360, though). In addition to Redwood City’s, we could see Foster City, Great America, Shoreline, something else farther south of Great America, a whole lot across the bay, and a whole lot of illegal stuff in the Fair Oaks/Friendly Acres area of RC.
Had we gone to the Port for the pre-fireworks festivities, though, we would have gotten to see Dan Ashley rocking out with his band:
What’s the band called? Dan Ashley and the News?
The band is called Push. I have never heard them, nor had I heard *OF* them until yesterday when my husband said “Hey, we could see Dan Ashley’s band!” And I said “Dan Ashley like Channel 7 Dan Ashley?” And then I thought of Ron Burgundy playing jazz flute.
John Tesh’s transition from TV “news” to music comes to mind. Is Dan Ashley still anchoring at KGO?
DogMa say: check yourselves, closely and all over, for ’em little tee-nine-cy Lyme ticks — which abound in Tilden Park. The effort is its own reward.
This.
But I’m not doing it for you.
Tick me off, why don’t you?
When I get back to the Bay Area (eventually), I might have to give that spot a try.
I had to work last night through most of the show, but I could feel the fireworks going off from the Hudson (we’re on the 15th floor in a building in midtown Manhattan, so not terribly far away). The only show I got to see in person came courtesy of the local idiot brigade, setting off some really powerful shit right in front of my building and from the roof next door. One of the rockets they fired off eventually blew out a window across the street from me. Naturally, the cops never showed up, so I just cracked open a beer and watched from my balcony.
– There should be a Throwback Thursday when Kara has to be quiet. Just one game where the only sounds coming from PA are the dulcet tones of an organ and Dick Callahan.
– The icecream maker has been summoned forth. Today’s dessert special: Cappuccino Gelato.
– Djokovic/Del Potro is hella fun. (Average ground stroke speed – 76 mph)
I like Kara and her shtick. ALthough my kids always whine when she comes on saying “Why don’t weeeee get interviewed? I want to be interviewed!”
She seems nice. I just don’t think her position should exist.
I’ve learned to ignore it and gotten pretty good at it. It would be a nice change nonetheless.
This.
Kara pops (not to be confused with Otter Pops) in late July — you may get a few nights-off.
I’d like to see them expand her role to report on other fan stuff — she’s a freelance tech reporter, so maybe sabermetrics for casual fans, or maybe rile up a rivalry betw left and right field bleachers, and get us our ‘tween innings Ode to Oakland (like THAT’ll happen).
Alas, they’ve had a sort of Karapprentice following her around, who seems possessed of all Kara’s cheerful-verging-on-perky demeanor without her genuine warmth and intelligence.
Its the Warriors version of Kara, I think
Hey fans, blah blah blahblahblahblahblah.
You wont have to worry in Sept, she’s going to be most likely out on maternity leave, she’s showing pretty large now.
Shes really annoying. Not as a person, just as an entity that is doing their job.
Good grief, unbelievable match point save!
Wow. Down a set and a break in the fourth, Del Potro comes back to save two match points and forces a fifth set. Turning into an all-timer.
I’ve been watching this one since it was early in the first set. Definitely an instant classic.
Yep. Definitely rooting for the winner of this one on Sunday.
Your score: 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 6-3 in 4:44. Djokovic survives Del Potro to go to the Wimbledon final. Epic? Epic.
Mmhmm.
Have yourself a match, Del Potro! Anybody but Djoker and he pulls it out.
Bring on Djokovic/Murray.
Djokovic is a stone-cold bad ass. And that is a great final matchup.
Janowicz might have something to say about that.
This has the makings of a classic. Murray looks like he might need the crowd to carry him.
Murray has bizarre dual nationality – British when he wins, Scottish when he loses.
He’s looking positively English at the moment. Whereas I would have sworn I saw him playing a bagpipe during a changeover earlier in this set.
On one hand, I hate working a day like today. But on the other hand I have been “working” an hour and this comment is the most stressful thing I have done. And I dont have to waste any time off…
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but whole-y fuck, the japenese do it again!
Someone needs to ani-GIF this bad.
Is she human?
Except that she’s Korean.
Whoops, impressive regardless of origin.
Editor magicians feel free to fix post pls.
Truf.
Well that explains it. She’s one of those clones from Cloud Atlas.
#marryme
Officially mesmerized.
Aaaand now I’m gif’d out of this thread.
I finally saw her foot — isn’t that a balk?
Holy hell.
… after which he tripped over the yellow line and broke his arm.
I had to work the early morning shift today, for the first time in forever. So now I just woke up from a nap and feel all hot and confused.
its night
Hate that, its like seeing a film in the theaters at noon for me.
Nice quick inning, lets’s get some A’s runz.
