I never thought that the Mariners’ ball girls was trying to be gratuitous (at least not since Safeco) – I always thought it was a way to give girls the opportunity to actually be on the field. It’s not like they were dressed in skimpy M’s t-shirts; they were in uniforms.
A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
but job ads don’t come out and say “Pitcher wanted, dudes only.” I want the women to have jobs and get the jobs. But to me, saying “we are going to have women out there cuz there is no other job for them is not the way to equality
In the sense of baseball having been an all-male game which will likely continue being so (or predominately being so) for many, many years, I don’t have a tremendous issue with the Mariners hiring ball girls (who also play softball/baseball locally) if they aren’t objectified on the field.
A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
I mentioned this on Twitter last night — it seems like the famously annoying AT&T usher dictum of making people wait to return to their seats until there’s a break in the action has died out, or at least they don’t bother with it in the view level cheap seats any more. People were up and down and wandering around in front of us all night long.
2nd game at A’s, an A’s fan in diamond level was waving his white hat to distract the pitcher and i thought… oh lord, here come the “what lowlifes A’s fans are, even the rich ones have no decorum at all…” next inning, i see several giants fans in diamond level standing and sitting in place to disrupt the pitcher—not to mention blocking the view of diamond level fans behind them… during the exact moment they most want to see what they paid to see. would they do that at ATå’ŒT? i suppose their excuse might be that when in lowlife rome, do as the lowlife romans. though the obvious answer is lowlife is as lowlife does.
(someone must have complained to the ushers because it didn’t happen during the last few innings.)
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
Roxy Bernstein is pretty good. I’m at work and only half listening to the game, but I could still follow what’s going whereas usually the Vince innings would’ve required a little more effort.
I’m not surprised. If you can competently call basketball on the radio (and he can), then baseball should be a breeze. King and Korach prove this as well.
So after listening to an inning of Roxy. Roxy replaces Vince. Vince replaces Glen. Hatte replaces Foss. Glen & Foss host a webcast about stuff once they figure out what exactly a webcast is. Everyone is happy.
Agreed. We need to know how great it feels, whatever it happens to be on that given day, and that whatever former catcher he is interviewing is the best in the business.
I don’t think he’s that bad on the whole, but his major flaw seems to be that he has one set of relievers he uses when the team is ahead, and another set he uses when the team is behind, and never the twain shall meet.
Scouts brilliance after intentional ball #1: “Pat Neshek may prefer to go after Nick Noonan, whose OPS is .457 this season, with the sinker rather than facing Gregor Blanco, whose OPS is .654. “
If the A’s lose this game, I don’t think I will be consoled by the recent good play. I don’t want to Eeyore, but this game and the last loss were/are inexcusable.
Both felt like winnable games, but that happens. We probably shouldn’t have won the Darvish game, the Chris Young game, and at least one of the Royals games. Tis baseball.
I’m telling you guys, Morse and Brendan Ryan are the best cost to value acquisitions the A’s could do to solve the middle infield and first base problem.
Brendan Ryan is a downgrade offensively. I get that his glove is supposedly good enough to make up for it, but still, yuck.
Morse isn’t a bad idea but I’d be looking to use him to replace the Young/Reddick platoon, not the Moss/Freiman platoon. Even with Moss looking really bad for a couple weeks (and even at his best being strikeout-prone) the latter has been far more productive than the former.
Ryan has been a consistent 1-2 win player the last few years. I believe that is one win better than Sogales. It’s not ideal but Utley fantasies aside, I don’t really see any other options.
I’m not sure Morse would be that cheap to acquire and he’s been worth a whopping 0.0 WAR this year. Dude can hit, but can’t field. Moss is still at 110 wRC+, so I’m not sure we need to cut bait yet. Freiman can handle the LHP end of the platoon.
As for Ryan, he also wouldn’t be that valuable. He would definitely shore up the MI defensively and probably would be cheaper to acquire. But ultimately, I think this is one of the better chances the A’s have, and they may as well go for it. Get the best guy on the market to improve MI. That’s Chase Utley.
Morse and Ryan are both free agents at the end of the year and Morse is making a sizable chunk of change. Depending on how much money the A’s are willing to pick up (I’m not holding my breath), they could come cheaply.
I would love Utley but it’s just not going to happen. We don’t know how he’s going to respond after the injury. We don’t know if the Phillies are even going to trade him (franchise cornerstone and whatnot). The bidding would almost certainly be crazy if he is available and producing. Most importantly, Utley can block a trade to 21 teams and I’ll buy you a beer if we’re not on it.
Sogard has an option left, Rosales does not. If Nakajima is taking over a regular infield position I’m indifferent which half of Sogales stays as the utility guy (at least until Grant Green might become the utility man) so I’d guess Sogard goes.
That’s a consideration.
OTOH Sogard’s play has trended up a bit (hits in 8 of last 9 games), Rosales’ has trended way down, and I don’t see anyone claiming him right now.
Cubs pitcher grand slam. Save some of that for us, White Sox!
Oh no Rosales
Called it…
I really like take the long odd bets
Nice start Coco!
I still kind of like Zito, but damn if I don’t want the A’s to bring me his head today.
That was my attitude for many years, but Zito is dead to me now. Just another ignorant conservative jock with delusions of insight.
Double steal, whoop whoop!
Ugh, I hate wasting that opportunity.
FK the Giants with a broomstick.
that curve was fucking wicked
that inning was almost as frustrating as the phone call that I was on and the one that I am about to get on again.
Sit ’em down, A.J.!
Griffinwalk!
lof walking aj
Walkin’ machine!
Umps again trying to gift the Giants. Coco says fuck that.
i love walks
Making them pay!
Also, Torres is looking pretty terrible out there. Don’t think it made a difference on this play, but still
That one great year he had is one of the craziest damn anomalies ever.
Coco/A.J. double steal please. For the laughs.
Yes, runs.
run
Have a seat, Gerald.
Can I just say the whole old ball dude thing I absolutely hate. let a kid do it.
its better than the gratuitous ball “girls.” Although one of my friends was on in the kingdome
I never thought that the Mariners’ ball girls was trying to be gratuitous (at least not since Safeco) – I always thought it was a way to give girls the opportunity to actually be on the field. It’s not like they were dressed in skimpy M’s t-shirts; they were in uniforms.
My thinking is, if it is sex exclusive, its gratuitous.
Sorta like Major League Baseball…
Yes, I do have this problem with MLB.
but job ads don’t come out and say “Pitcher wanted, dudes only.” I want the women to have jobs and get the jobs. But to me, saying “we are going to have women out there cuz there is no other job for them is not the way to equality
In an idealistic sense, I agree with this.
In the sense of baseball having been an all-male game which will likely continue being so (or predominately being so) for many, many years, I don’t have a tremendous issue with the Mariners hiring ball girls (who also play softball/baseball locally) if they aren’t objectified on the field.
I know how good the women that are ball women are
Besides being good at baseball, they have to look like they could be a cheerleader. which is dumb
I find you gratuitous.
By way of rebuttal I offer:
This.
Thanks, and go As.
that is either a WAG or a high school girl. I can’t tell the difference.
It’s Kotsay’s wife
Thanks, and go As.
(I know, doesn’t change my opinion that she looks like a teenager)
What the fuck happened? Why was he trying to steal there?
dammit
Cespedes is just not a smart baserunner.
he is not. needs more rickey time
Just tell him to watch Coco and learn.
Which is funny because that run he manufactured with 2 steals in Game 2 of the ALDS last year was amazing.
He makes up for his poor instincts and decision-making by being a freakishly good, and at times freakishly aggressive athlete.
dammit.
Nnnnnnnnnnnoonan! Miss it. Miss it, Noonan!
Hits like Peggy Noonan, amiright?
Will Leitch gets it:
He lost me with “fabulous sightlines from every direction.” That’s just factually untrue.
he may mean 1) good backgrouns to look at or, 2) its cool to walk around the lower bowl and be able to see the game. (thanks raiders!)
ok i am wrong
So in other words, no one who goes there cares to actually watch the game while in their seat. Got it.
I mentioned this on Twitter last night — it seems like the famously annoying AT&T usher dictum of making people wait to return to their seats until there’s a break in the action has died out, or at least they don’t bother with it in the view level cheap seats any more. People were up and down and wandering around in front of us all night long.
Forget going up and down the aisles. Anyone stands in a section between you and the action and you can’t see shit.
They do it in my section. It’s the same usher there every game (and has been for 5+ years)
2nd game at A’s, an A’s fan in diamond level was waving his white hat to distract the pitcher and i thought… oh lord, here come the “what lowlifes A’s fans are, even the rich ones have no decorum at all…” next inning, i see several giants fans in diamond level standing and sitting in place to disrupt the pitcher—not to mention blocking the view of diamond level fans behind them… during the exact moment they most want to see what they paid to see. would they do that at ATå’ŒT? i suppose their excuse might be that when in lowlife rome, do as the lowlife romans. though the obvious answer is lowlife is as lowlife does.
(someone must have complained to the ushers because it didn’t happen during the last few innings.)
No lines for the bathrooms is also not true.
I waited in one of the longest lines for a mens room that i have ever waited in last night…..
All right. Where do I sign?
in
Fosse needs to be involved somehow. He’s a walking embodiment of the team for me, sort of our Ron Santo.
That’s why he’s doing the webcast.
OK, but Glen doesn’t get to participate. We bring back Buan to host it.
I’m down with that. Anf Fosse should continue to do the pregame radio stuff he does now.
Agreed. We need to know how great it feels, whatever it happens to be on that given day, and that whatever former catcher he is interviewing is the best in the business.
We certainly want him to be at the stadium every day and hanging out.
can we give him a mic in the booth and not turn it on?
Depends. What booth? Like in the East Side Club?
You seem to be under the assumption people would listen to it.
Can we get 1-2 Buancasts a year?
this
He can walk around with Kara and pass out dibs.
Oooh! That’s gold!
I don’t think Ron Santo was the walking embodiment of anything for his last few decades.
Chris Young is only 5 for 40 against lefties. He’s on the team to hit lefties.
No, he’s on the team to Suck Ass #3.
I think he is team Capt. Honestly, 1-2 are what they are. CY25 is supposed to be a good player. We gave something up to get him.
I still have some hope, if you look at his career splits May is by far his worst month.
the amount of food in the stands shots on the giants feed is stupid
rosales accidently does something right
It’s such a shame that guitarists want to play a 1959 vintage sunburst Les Paul when all these cheesy new guitars sit unplayed #shame
Coco 4 all star
Freiman thought the first hit he had was on a fastball, but it was 82 mph
DAMMIT!
This is ridiculous. Zito is FKing terrible.
its not like he is even pitching well in this game, he is actively sucking in this game
6 walks through 5 innings and the A’s have only scored once!?!
Evidently Bochy doesn’t care if he blows his arm out, either.
young better be batting for his roster spot
Hey, he got like 7 pitches that AB…
well, at least we get griffin for one more inning. Yes I know there are only two outs right now
dammit dammit dammit
I feel like even if we win this thing, I’ll still be angry about what we didn’t do to Zito.
I am still angry about last night
My goodness. 6 walks and Coco 3-3 and we only have 1?
and a Sandoval error
who is this crawford guy, and were did the crawford guy from last year go?
A base hit with runners in scoring position, imagine that.
Welp
Pervy Panda. FK that guy.
fuuuu
This is the Giants first lead of the series, right?
They were up 1-0 for a minute in one of the Oakland games.
no. game 2. 1.5 innings
The only thing we havent done this series…come from behind late
We haven’t blown a save, either. (Gulp…)
Barry fucking zito, pitching to the score
FK this shit.
Id rather pitch Eric, Casey, or Cesar Chavez…
Damnit. I turn away from the game for a few minutes to handle work stuff…
I don’t know why we didn’t use Blevins there. Melvin’s bullpen management is really getting annoying.
getting? dudes a bad tactitian.
he is really wedded to that certain innings belong to certain relievers thing
And the lefty righty thing.
I don’t think he’s that bad on the whole, but his major flaw seems to be that he has one set of relievers he uses when the team is ahead, and another set he uses when the team is behind, and never the twain shall meet.
So he should have brought Chavez in last night after all?
over relies on platoons
Yeah that too, although that’s sort of the master plan the team is built around, so it might not be just him making that decision.
WALKS! FUCK YEAH!
So far this game is not the best advertisement for walking a lot.
I think it’s about time for Cespedes to hit one across the bay.
yuppers. He needs to make up for that baserunning thing
That’ll work.
better. It’d be even better if Okajima got belt out
DAMMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT
no roxy, Moss shouldn’t just react, that is how he swung at a 55 footer
Predictable Moss is predictable
I’ll have another slice of pumpkin pie, please!
Clearly Melvin looked in Moss’ eyes before he put him in to pinch hit over Frieman. That’s how he knows to ride the hot hand.
Thanks, and go As.
Oh, now blevins is in. for the bottom of the order
And now Blevins comes in? Seriously, wtf.
he’s a late innings guy, you don’t want to was him in the 6th
*waste
Yikes. That’s inexplicable.
Rosales was obviously in trouble there and one of the outfielders needed to run him off.
run him off? tell me more
After that throw I’m now tempted to run him off myself.
god dammit
Thanks, and go As.
Fire Rosales Now
Oh my god, send him down already.
Did he just toss the salad again?
fucking suck ass
Nakajima please
Yeah
Roxy took too long saying the run scored
no ken, there is no carryover with rosales, he is a bad major league baseball regular
why is rosales batting
oooh, can I hit him too?
And you all said he was useless!
boy am i glad montz is on the roster for that
You start to think Rosey is actually trolling us.
Why is torres frustrated?
Chili Davis nods in admiration.
Never fear, Josh Reddick is due back tomorrow night.
Really need to see schlong, scribbles, and Naka up and Chavez, Suck Ass, and CY25 down.
Pretty sure it will be Montz down, not CY25.
Oh I know. I’m just saying what I really need to see. I also need to e 6’5″ and 205…
At least it’s none of the Suck Bros. up.
If we lose once a week for the rest of the season, Id be ok with it.
Both felt like winnable games, but that happens. We probably shouldn’t have won the Darvish game, the Chris Young game, and at least one of the Royals games. Tis baseball.
I know. I know. like many of us said last year, in 2011, I wouldn’t have cared. Just happy to hear a game
I feel better now.
I wish they could win a weekday day game
I’m telling you guys, Morse and Brendan Ryan are the best cost to value acquisitions the A’s could do to solve the middle infield and first base problem.
Brendan Ryan is a downgrade offensively. I get that his glove is supposedly good enough to make up for it, but still, yuck.

Most importantly, Utley can block a trade to 21 teams and I’ll buy you a beer if we’re not on it.
Probably right, but Utley is from Long Beach, maybe CA teams are the ones he left off the list.
Real chance Rosales gets DFA’d before tomorrow’s game, right?
Sogard has an option left, Rosales does not. If Nakajima is taking over a regular infield position I’m indifferent which half of Sogales stays as the utility guy (at least until Grant Green might become the utility man) so I’d guess Sogard goes.

I will cross my fingers.
Oh well, I’ll take three of four. Now it’s on to dominate some middle america squads for awhile.
Now my office can go back to watching ominous wall clouds on CNN.
Also, cheery thought — we don’t have to go back to AT&T until next year (unless they win the NL pennant, which I doubt).
I always feel a great sense of relief once these games are over. We survived them, and now we can get on with our lives.
DFA ROSALES NOW.
Yes, please.
Eithier in center.
leads to a run. first playing a double into a triple, then not being able to get to a pop up
I remember when tweener was the new market inefficency
Gerald Posey was held to 1-for-17 with 1 BB and 2 RBI in the four games.
