The Lounge where we’re cooler than the other side of the pillow. 856

Something struck me the other day. Since we all know that elcroata is the coolest man in the world, the fact that he posts on Free Kraut makes this blog the coolest blog in the world. I’m pretty sure that means we’re all cool too. With that in mind, what’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done? For me it would have be the time I ate a tub of Cool Whip with LL Cool J  while listening to Kool and the Gang.

So come on in and celebrate and have a good time…

    I’m watching a little bit of this “WBC Championship Game” and I get a sense that, especially with the rain, nobody in the ballpark, players, fans or announcers really gives a crap. This would probably be fun in Santurce or Puerto Plata, but in San Francisco, yawn.

    What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
    • Bed Mar 19,2013 6:58 pm || Up

      Why is the WBC in the United States? Is because MLB spring training is here? It would seem only the other countries actually care about this thing.

      But seriously, folks....
      • Soaker Mar 19,2013 7:06 pm || Up

        It’s run by a US company (MLB) and everybody else is supposed to be thrilled to be invited. I see how playing the final round in Asia would be an issue for players who play professionally in the US, but I don’t buy that a final round in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela or Cuba presents any major travel problem. In those places you wouldn’t be able to try to sell advance tickets for the final games for >$100, but that didn’t work out so well in San Francisco this time either.

        What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
        • Bed Mar 19,2013 7:08 pm || Up

          For all three WBC tournaments I’ve had only one thought…if any A’s players are playing I hope they don’t get hurt. I couldn’t care less who wins but if others enjoy it, good for them.

          But seriously, folks....
        • dmoas Mar 19,2013 7:09 pm || Up

          I could see an issue trying to get in and out of Cuba.

          • Soaker Mar 19,2013 7:34 pm || Up

            The problem there is negotiating with the US government more than anything else. But, yeah, MLB has enough problems in Miami and wouldn’t be likely to open that can of worms. There was enough of an issue when the Orioles went there to play some exhibitions some years ago.

    So, my grandmother (who I am currently living with) is in the hospital. She has congestive heart failure and went to the ER last night then was admitted. She’s doing OK now but they are monitoring her for a couple more days so they can make adjustments to her medication and stuff.

    My aunt, who also lives here, is currently on vacation in Laughlin, NV.

    My cousin also lives here and he is staying elsewhere so he can get rides back and forth to school.

    Long story short: I am sitting in the house right now, and it’s completely empty besides me. I am content as fuck. No stress at all. Everything just clicked for me right now.

                  Dirty secret-I have done the same with the last 4-5 new Prince albums.

                  What kills me is you can hear a few seconds of a great album in almost each one of them. But with no one to ever say boo to him it has become a collection of self indulgence.

                  Will still see him any chance I get because he puts on a great show, but I doubt there will be circumstances that will allow him to get anywhere near peak value again.

      The best Gorillaz songs are the pretty little melodies that Albarn tucks away in between the main tracks. Biggest problem with Gorillaz is that the guest vocals almost uniformly suck.

                  It’s hard for me to really compare the two as they are separate genres in my mind.
                  One’s a hugely influential band, and one is the solo project of a member of the aforementioned band dabbling in Hip-Hop and electronic with a dash of latin thrown in for taste.

        Blur has some good songs, but you cant deny that Gorillaz wins on highs, range, popularity, and gets extra points for being a cartoon band.

          I deny all of that except the cartoon thing which whatever.

          Look, Gorillaz is a fine project, and if you prefer it to Blur, that’s cool. They are two very different acts despite the common element of Albarn, and I can see why Gorillaz’ musical stylings are more in your wheelhouse. But by no means does Blur “suck” by comparison – to say so is absurd.

          • DFA Mar 20,2013 8:10 pm || Up

            Different they are. That is why comparing them is fun.

            How can you say that Gorrillaz has less range?

            I would put up at least 3 Gorillaz songs up against Parklife any day of the week.

                Eclectic is what Im talking about. Showing a broad set of skills from almost spoken word to poppy ballad, to dark, to dancey.

                  Blur was one of the seminal Britpop bands, they were enormous when I lived in Germany in the early 90’s and were equally huge in the US too.

                  Gorillaz seemed like a savvy, self aware, cool marketing project aimed to snatch up instant pop infamy.
                  It was super novel at the time and I genuinely enjoy it, but it was not anywhere near the level of impact and fame Blur achieved.

                  I don’t know if I would agree they were huge in the US. They were definitely an niche phenomenon here.

                  Impact? Blur is an undisputed heavyweight in the category of Brit pop. This is true.

                  However, Gorillaz has be a critical band in the increasing popularity of EDM style pop.

                  Further Impact is not popularity.

                  I would say impact is linked to popularity, but now we are battling semantics…
                  Electronic Dance music was already ‘popular’ when Gorrilaz debuted, if anything he made crossover music with American Hip Hop artists but it wasn’t anything pioneering or new.
                  The only real thing that was groundbreaking was that they were a cartoon band, but the Chipmunks broke that territory several years before.

                  My fiancée saw Blur play in London back in 2003 or 2004. Her seats were in the balcony, so she wasn’t able to participate in the scrum that ensued when Albarn threw his shirt into the crowd and it got ripped to pieces by screaming girls. That is certainly one way to quantify popularity.

                  One thing that doesn’t get said often around these parts, although Lynn covered it last night, is that the excessive proclivity to argue tends to drive away the FKers who are not into arguing, and for the most part, almost all of the women on FK fall into that category.

                  Plus, saying things like “I’m right and you’re wrong” in regards to subjective opinions is fucking ignorant and insulting and is not even funny. All it shows is the profound personal insecurity of the person saying such a thing.

                  That’s really it. As corny as it sounds, every time we show up we make a decision that we are ok with what it is. And just as much as arguing drives away some, if it is all just love you’s and youre awesome that would drive away others.

                  I stay out of a fair share of stuff because it might not be my cup of Vodka. But I’m willing to read it and click along because overall I enjoy the experience. And we all have to decide that we are ok with it every time. I like my understanding of almost every person who is one here, and even the one’s I dont care for as much I think it says more about things I need to work on than problems they have. I would hope thee is enough of a mix of all of this stuff to keep everyone around.

                  This is how I feel. Trying to enforce a change of behavior here, whether targeted at Bed or DFA or anyone else, goes counter to the purpose and general thrust of this space. Letting people be who they feel a need to be online is a more important usage of this space than crafting the ideal blog for any one subset of people.

                  Everyone on here has opinions on ways the blog could be better suited to their own self or to satellite members or to new outsiders or whatever, and that’s perfectly fine, but that’s not what this is or what this is for.

What are you guys bringing?” kind of interchange which those of us who hang out in person a lot have, but which would be really dull and a bit rude to involve those of you who live hundreds of miles away in. I’m tired of his wounded ego desperately searching for gratification at the expense of others.

                  This blog is better off without Bloom’s whiny bullshit and passive aggressive behind-the-scenes sexual predation, which DFA thinks it’s weak for me to publicly mention because Bloom isn’t here to defend himself, but if he did come back to defend himself, there’s no way he would win that defense and everybody would know what an utter manipulative piece of shit he is, at least towards women.

                  This blog would be far better off without DFA’s antagonistic jabs and ego grabs. He ruins the experience for far more people than he improves the experience for. His insecurity and immaturity manifest in ways that hurt others feelings to gratify himself. It is my opinion that he is a selfish jerk and I have no further use for him.

                  I also think this blog will be better off without my freaky transgendered feminism and kink advocacy as well, because I’m likely “triggering” (making uncomfortable or reminding of past abuses) a percentage of the population here when I mention that stuff, and to their credit, they follow the FK ethos far more stringently than I do and don’t get on me about it, which is very honorable and profoundly kind of them.

                  I’m logging out right now, and I don’t know if I’m coming back anytime soon.

                  I’m on facebook… Temple Kirk … feel free to add or block me as necessary.

                  I’m inclined to agree. But I think Kay has a lot of valid points about how ridiculous some of the bickering here has become. While I don’t think it’s necessarily a “DFA-versus-everyone-else” situation here, there does seem to be something about the off season that encourages really dumb drama (the same thing happened over at that other place, no?). Overreaction or not, there’s been a lot of build up to this point, for whatever reasons.

                  Anyway, I’m only here because you’re all an interesting and genuine bunch of folks, and I am marooned in a savage place where A’s fans are few and far between. I doubt that I’m contributing much, if anything, but ultimately, this place is a nice respite from my own day-to-day drudgery. I hope it can stay that way. There have been plenty of times when I’ve rolled through here and found some things that ticked me off, and those have been my cues to either a.) get back to work or b.) step away from the goddamned computer altogether.

                  TL;DR: The goddamned season hasn’t even started, so let’s all just chill out.

                  Considering the modest size of the group and the lack of any source of new members once that final exodus from AN occurred, and seeing how websites mature generally, I’ve thought for a while that the duration of FK’s period at critical mass wouldn’t be all that long. People leave for a specific reason, or no specific reason, or move on to some other format like Facebook as Kay mentions above, so there are fewer reasons for the remaining folks to show up as frequently, and sure, eventually the thing has run its course. I wouldn’t say it’s twilight yet but it does feel like afternoon.

                  I spent the afternoon marinating on this and I stand by everything I wrote. My cannabis withdrawal symptoms cleared up by the end of the weekend and are not a causative factor. The only thing agitating me right now is people behaving badly.

                  I don’t want to leave FK; but I don’t want to share it with someone who behaves disrespectfully towards others for his own enjoyment and ego gratification.

                  Frankly, I expected to log in and see a barrage of defensive verbal diarrhoea from DFA in return. I’m very surprised and glad not to see this. I hope this is a good sign that he’s taking this seriously and maybe going to take some time for introspection in regards to his interactions with others. I still want the dude to grow up to be a shining beacon of light, positivity, and HUMILITY. He’s a bright guy and if he can get over himself a little (well, a lot) and think about how the things he writes and says affect the feelings and self-esteem of others, I will gladly go back to “having a use” for him, and apologize for losing my temper, even though I stand by what I wrote.

        Louie Anderson’s dive was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. Not great, but dude is 400 pounds and managed not to kill himself going off a really high platform. Kareem Abdul Jabar’s dive was terrible but he got points for being 7 feet tall which seems lame, but whatever. I thought Miss Alabama USA (which by the way, what *is* that? I’ve heard of “Miss Alabama” and “Miss USA” but WTH is “Miss Alabama USA”?) was mediocre, but she beat Rudi Huxtable in the dive-off. I did give Miss Alabama USA points for basically admitting that she’s a nobody trying to ride this Musberger thing to as much acclaim as she can soak up.

  41. Englishmajor Mar 20,2013 7:34 pm

    The cottage I rent is mostly surrounded by a 6-foot privacy fence, and I access the yard and the kitchen door, which I use as my main door, through one of those gates with a latch that you open from the outside by pulling on a cord. When I moved in, the cord was a piece of grimy plastic rope that was ugly and unpleasant to touch. So I cut it off and replaced it with a pretty fuchsia silk cord. But I couldn’t cut the very end of the nasty plastic rope; it was twined and knotted too tightly around a rusty piece of heavy wire that passed through the eye of the latch. So I just tied my pink silk cord to the other end of the rusty wire.

    Over the course of the last few years, the pink silk cord frayed through where it was constantly being drawn across the top of the fence. As it frayed, it became harder to get the door to pull open, and I had a couple of times when I couldn’t get the gate open. This was a problem, since I had fastened the screen door of the other entrance – which I never use because it requires me to walk into the middle of my neighbor’s yard — from inside, so I couldn’t get it open. I had to drag my neighbor’s picnic bench over to the gate, climb up on it and lean over to grab at the latch from the other side.

    A few weeks ago I decided to take the latch off altogether and let the gate hang ajar until I could get around to fixing it. This was complicated, because the screws holding the latch on were stripped and the holes hadn’t been drilled straight, so it was a pain to get them out, but I did it.

    Then a few days ago, I came through the gate and looked at the wall perpendicular to the gate, where there’s another latch that holds the gate open … handy for moving things in and out. Eureka! Why don’t I just take that latch off and put it where the other latch was, and use the latch with the rusty wire and the grubby plastic cord to hold the door open? I won’t even have to drill any holes, they’re already there!

    Of course, the most important and pressing part of this project was to procure a replacement for the frayed pink cord. So I went to the fabric store this afternoon and stood in line for half an hour to get the proper length of green silk cord and gold silk cord. Then I came home and took the latch off the wall, brought it inside and braided the green and gold cord onto the latch. Finally I returned to the yard to attach the replacement latch to the gate.

    It’s slightly smaller than the first latch. The holes are about an eighth of an inch off — which means not only can I not reuse them, but I probably can’t drill new ones there because they’ll just merge with the old ones. Instead, I’ll power up my drill and move the whole thing an inch or so up, and move the door part of the latch as well.

    I could call my landlord and say “Come fix this FKing gate”, but he has three other projects he’s agreed to do here but hasn’t started.

    And the capper is that I just realized there is another way to get into the yard, since the wall on the other side was knocked down for the construction project last summer.

    • Soaker Mar 20,2013 7:46 pm || Up

      Take first latch to hardware store, buy identical one. It sounds like a $5 part. Minor fixes like that one, the stopper at the bottom of the toilet tank not sealing, etc., I usually just fix myself. (That said, at the current place, the landlord lives right next door and he’s a contractor who built the place, so he can fix his own sloppy work.)

        Yeah, that’s easier than drilling holes – especially because I’m not quite sure where the drill is.
        My landlord’s a contractor too, which explains things like this, in the bathroom he redid just before I moved in:

          Oh dear. Well, don’t bother fixing that. It’s a photo of a light switch and an outlet, neither of which is straight relative to the floor or each other, or anything else.

          I don’t have anything that bad. The guy built this place in 2009 and I’m only the second person to live here. He did some things cheaply, some of which broke quickly, I’ve been able to recommend upgrades and he’s been very cooperative. The place is quite a bit nicer now than when I moved in. When his cheap-ass used clothes dryer crapped out, I had a shiny new washer/dryer combo unit within a few days.

          I like everything about the building now; it’s just too bad it’s about 20 miles away from where I want to live. For someone who wants this location it’s a great deal: all the appliances, a garage, storage shed, nice sunny deck and patio with mountain views for $750/month.

  49. DFA Mar 20,2013 9:27 pm

    I wanted to briefly respond to the mess above.

    First, I would like folks to acknowledge that I am parodied, mocked, and teased far more than any other person here. Thus, I often play my comments (you are wrong , getting my argue on, being super hipster, etc) to that teasing. I am ok with that because I thought there are people that love me here and it is done in fun and jest from both sides. If Kay’s opinion is the zeitgeist of the site it seems that is no longer the case. I will stop that caricature and playing to that, but I will expect that others cease from their side of the equation as well and I will reserve my rights when I am subject of unsolicited attacks and no longer friendly teasing.

    Secondly, when Kay seems to imply that I am driving the women away, I think that that belies the fact that when Bed goes off calling people pussies, I get an email asking to come in and provide rhetorical support from one. I got called out yesterday by EC for walking away from a debate. People seem to want it both ways.

    Third, I think people seeing my comments above as an attempt to require someone to do something. They are not. I am first and for most correcting Bed’s false implication that I want him gone and explaining my actual position on him. I would not have brought it up if Bed didn’t make the jab at me. Previously a similar conversation was had where this was discussed, but because I said that I liked someone else’s organization, rather than slamming Bed and Kay, rather than I brought Bed into it. Further, I have absolutely no expectation that Bed’s behavior would conform to my requests, but have merely decided to express what would make me happy. I am not saying Bed is a bad person, a poor contributor here, or many of the things that people have subscribed to my comments, besides someone who doesn’t give me enjoyment.

    Lastly, I would just like to respond to this:

    I’m very surprised and glad not to see this. I hope this is a good sign that he’s taking this seriously and maybe going to take some time for introspection in regards to his interactions with others. I still want the dude to grow up to be a shining beacon of light, positivity, and HUMILITY. He’s a bright guy and if he can get over himself a little (well, a lot) and think about how the things he writes and says affect the feelings and self-esteem of others, I will gladly go back to “having a use” for him, and apologize for losing my temper, even though I stand by what I wrote.

    There is absolutely no one else on this blog that anyone would make such self assured assessment of and attacks on their character. The fact that it is allowed on me is sad to me. I find it ironic that my busy day at work and unconscious absence here created a huge change in the interpretation of my actions. It was merely projection.

    I think this critique belies someone who doesn’t know me or pay much attention to who I am at all. I care about several people here which is why my disagreements with FSU and ED on the pussy thread, jesa telling me that Kylie was talking shit about me to her and she didn’t defend me, or EC on the immigration thread equating me to Hitler was hurtful to me.

    I think I have told most of you that a combination of my dad busting my eardrum and missing a much of 6th grade dealing with ear infections and surgery, dealing with a bunch of shit my dad was into, and my own personality kept me isolated from the general public to the point that I talked in third person for several months and had no friends for about three years. As I reintegrated through the debate team into dealing with people I have maintained the self confidence that allowed me to survive that and the strong belief in debate as a method of finding truth.

    Anyone that knows me understands that because of those experiences while I often don’t give outward indications of it, I am constantly evaluating my interactions with others to ensure that I am where I want to be. One of the reasons that I am an organizer is specifically to do this and check my privilege through a job that requires empathy and listening. The idea that Kay has said that I don’t either examine my privilege or my interactions with folks, shows that she has not taken any effort to know me, which saddens me.

      Quite frankly, I don’t support anything Kay said above. From the sound of it, she’s been going through a lot lately on top of dealing with withdraw. Aside for the completely unwarranted personnel attack of someone who wasn’t apart conversation (and hasn’t been) and since most everyone else did (as well as I assumed you) I let it go. But seeing how much it hit you, it kind of pisses me off because I do think you’ve been a pretty good sport over the frequent potshots at your expense. And while how you said what you did above was poorly worded, I think it was pretty clear what you were getting at which could be agreed with or not and left at that.

        Unwarranted, my ass.

        When I offered in September to tell the story of .net to anyone who emailed me, I got a barrage of confidential responses about how Bloom had mistreated them/tried to coerce his way into their (or their wife’s or girlfriend’s) pants/beds, and upon having failed or succeeded, became passive aggressive, rude, coercive, and or cruel. It was enlightening and saddening to see that FiveMinuteMajorette and I were not the only people he had behaved that way towards. I was hoping to purge the elephant in the room and instead found that there was a whole herd of elephants in the room.

        I’m sorry to have to pull a Nico about this, but I have it on multiple sources that your friend is a misogynist jerk, whom if he were in my kink community, would be banned from said community for his transgressions. I was sincerely worried that he might show up to FanFest and I might not be able to hold myself back from making a scene, or even worse.

        If you want to be friends with human garbage like that, that’s your problem, not mine.

          How the fk is Bloom a part of this conversation Kay? How? Tell me the fk that. People will say and believe whatever the fk they want to about the man, including you. They and you have every right. But he was never a part of this conversation until you went on your unwarranted and insulting diatribe. Whatever has crawled up your ass that you feel the need to go off like you have I have no idea and quite frankly, I no longer care. But yes. It was entirely unwarranted and still is.

            I’m tired of keeping it bottled up. I hate myself for ever defending him. I wanted this out and public before I leave, so that nobody ever says “I miss Bloomie” around these parts without getting the taste of bile in their mouth.

              Well, you’ll notice it’s when you compared me to Bloom in my “Bed Goes Crazy” lounge is when I basically knew I’d lost it. I knew that was about as big a blow as you could throw my way. It’s complicated because Bloom is one of the reasons I joined AN but you and MikeV are the reasons I joined FK so…yeah, like I said it’s complicated for me.

                  I guess for me I’ve tried to go the other way since I joined FK…I try let stuff slide now, I don’t always succeed but I’m trying. The other behavior I’m trying to change is not posting 100 random posts in a row anymore…it’s been done and frankly I think people were bored with it.

                  All I’ve ever wanted to do on this site is make people giggle. Many of you folks know more about baseball than I do and many of you are smarter than I am. I’m just happy you folks let me be silly here.

                  A couple of things:

                  I was born with a fighters personality and a very very good memory, which means I am bad at letting things go and good at attacking based on longstanding slights. It is ingrained in me. And Im trying to rectify this.

                  What you refer to from two years ago is an unpopular opinion that I have about people having kids that has pissed off many a people (including members of my family who I have basically said the same thing to). Im glad that the disaster I saw was merely my poor vision and that you are happy with your family.

                  I too would like to change it, and my comments were more focused on helping me uphold my end rather than something that is wrong with you. It helps me get away and take a break if youre more concentrated. Like Ive said elsewhere, thats probably my problem.

      Part of what’s so great about this site for me is the freedom to have an opinion, be it A’s related, political, scientific, culture related, or complete non-sequitur, chances are one of the many interesting intelligent folks here will have some nugget that makes some other beautiful wingnut want to nerd out on it.

      Unfortunately, it can get heated and through a text format it’s difficult to gain those little cues you could infer from facial expressions and body language.

      I don’t wish anyone to leave this back 40 of the intertubes, I do however think sometimes it might be best to take a break from a thread where ‘someone on the internet is wrong’ syndrome sets in and the discourse quickly grows sharp little teeth and feelings are hurt. Take a break, go to a grill, and come back 15 minutes later when the bloods stopped boiling or maybe tomorrow?

      None of this is directed towards anyone in particular, I would just hate for this community to be transferred to FB, the waters just fine where we’re at.

      I’ve been staying out of this, but I want to say a couple things, so I will.

      I think DFA is absolutely right that people criticize him in ways they would not criticize others. On ** that really pissed me off, because DFA would routinely get blamed/punished for reacting angrily to things that would have pissed anyone one because they were across the line. Here, no one gets punished for anything so the onus is on the players to figure things out, or not.

      I try not to react to people leaving because I don’t want people to think there is some official voice trying to enforce anything, but there are definitely people I miss (come back g!). Everyone caught up in this particular mess makes the list. All go further than my taste (in different ways), but all also contribute in ways that I like. DFA consistently makes an impact on how I look at baseball, but also gets caught up in arguments that aren’t worth the effort and just piss him/whoever else off. Kay provides an honest window into an area I’m fascinated by (her transformation) and one I’m not (her kinks). Bed creates a lot of content that doesn’t sing for me, and some that I really enjoy.

      In any event, that may not change/help anything, but I wanted to say it so I did.

I’m a deviant wherever I go, and it is simple animal biology that a herd purges its’ deviants in times of crisis.

      Just a quick response as I’m being mentioned here.

      I appreciate the fact that having one’s personal qualities discussed is no fun. The freedom that this blog gives everyone to express the traits of their own personality can and often does lead to the discussions on people, not their statements alone. I find this to be only very natural.

      I have come to conclusion that I am unable to have what I consider to be a fair, level-headed and constructive discussion with some, either due to my flawed understanding of the limits of own intellect, minimum common decency and a relation between an individual and society, their flawed understanding of the same topics or a combination of both.

      Under these circumstances I will try to ignore the occasions where my natural instinct is to speak up, as past has shown me that the results are by far not worth the effort.

      This should by no means signify that I see no occasions where I wholeheartedly disagree with both the mannerism and the factual interpretation, including but not limited to the cases that describe the events I have participated in.

      Or, in short, I am not silent because I don’t have anything to say or because I agree, but because I feel it is for the best.

                  Olives are just odd-a holdover from someone who decided that nachos are sort of like Enchiladas I guess.

                  And I can support DFA’s position as long as the beans are refried well. But unfortunately most places simply don’t.

                  May be some confusion. We’re assuming when Bed says “black olives,” it means the conventional grocery store olives that us ‘Mercans grew up with, not just any black olive. DFA is saying he prefers the non-conventional ones. I’m with him.

                  Pink lady apples are a varietal with pink flesh, which are very tart and not particular tasty. Their main attraction is the color of the flesh.

                • elcroata Mar 21,2013 11:50 am || Up

                  Of course there are subspecies. The only thing that I was trying to explain, because many people do not know it, is that every subspecies of olive is a green olive and is also a black olive. The color of the olive does not depend on the subspecies, but solely on the time of harvesting.

                  If I harvest my olives (in an average winter) in October, they will be green olives and be bigger in size. If I harvest them in December, they will be black and small. As there is only one press in the village and you pay for a kilo of olive, lot of people wait until December to harvest theirs, as in the end the amount of the oil is the same.

                  Also, lot of the taste depends on how and if you ferment them

                  What’s the name of the orchard? We get our apples from Kiyokawa, usually U-Pick once a year, then from the farmer’s market the rest of the time. I just don’t care for the Pink Ladies. Except for Rizzo.

      I support DFA here. He often gets more shit than he deserves, even if he does bring a chunk of it down on himself through some of his posts here.

      This is a community where we mostly all know each other; it’s not an anonymous flame haven where we lob personal attacks just to troll. I think being able to argue and call each other out without creating lasting grudges shows the strength of a community. I usually don’t get involved in a lot of the arguments, whether through disinterest or not having common enough ground, but I hate seeing things get personal. DFA is not particularly tactful in his arguments, and thus engenders some of that ire, but if I had my way, we’d all be able to let it go after the argument is done. I don’t think anyone actually dislikes anyone else here, and we’d be better off if we remembered that. And if not, being able to clear the air like these above subthreads every once and a while is quite beneficial.

      Long story short, it’s a small world after all can’t we all just get along ooh la dee ooh la dah I don’t want anyone to leave FK ever.

      yes. no.

      They were part of the 80s HC movement. Put out the most PR record ever (into the unknown) totally misunderstood and hated. Put out a great comeback (suffer) reaccepted. then went kinda Rock stary, kinda went on the outs…but stayed near enough to Epitaph and the like to not be all the way out.

      I have them in the guilty pleasure category personally.

          PR to me =”punk rock” Into the unknown was a total departure from the 80-85 bad religion. It was seemingly regular adult oriented rock. Its fantastic in its “fuck you LA Hardcore asshole I am playing foreigner.”

          They were also much smarter that most punks, so that made them kinda “the other”, the man, maybe. In the 90s majors were poaching the indie labels looking for to sell records. After Nirvana broke, anyone that left the label were race traders. BR went to atlantic. (although they still released singles on some indies like Sympathy and what not). when you went major at the time you were dead. (see jawbreaker) but unlike some, they had enough capital in the HC bank to get somewhat of a pass. The same can’t be said for green day and jawbreaker and (I am sure there are more examples).

          I have $5. No I don\'t.

Not in fear of being out of work, but new role and working with leaders who dont necessarily see how the job gets done in the same way our team does. That’s clever…when I was a kid they didn’t teach it that way…at least in the Sacramento public schools I went to so I’m holding out. It’s a well known quirk among my friends…I have others.

                  That’s actually a good example. Stylistically, I have no use for it, meaning that I find it lacking elegance. But, that is actually a good point how to avoid misunderstanding.

              It’s AP style, so I’m supposed to use it at work, but I say the AP stylebook can kiss my ring, elbow, and ass.

      I want a set of Asada fries bad, but the place that sells them has a good half a dozen locations, all in opposite parts of town from where I am. Trying to think of an excuse for going out so I would have to drive by and get some.

          There are Vietnamese people in Arkansas?!?

          • Englishmajor Mar 21,2013 11:54 am || Up

            There are Vietnamese people everywhere. My former colleague Duc said once when he was driving across the US, he’d stop in small towns and look in the phone book for Nguyens, and there were always Nguyens, and if he called them up they would always invite him over for dinner.

              Partner in Crime’s parents lived in Tennessee when they came over from Vietnam. Allegedly, her mom had a crazy Southern accent for a while.

            There was a big influx of Vietnamese into the US as the war over there wound down. A lot of them wound up in places like Houston. Probably Arkansas too. Oppressive heat and humidity, gigantic bugs, torrential rain, I think it felt just like home.
