My favorite blondie song
Bonus association: Contains the lyrics “I never lied, I never cried.”
i like sunday girl. and today we can all be sunday girls.
Definitely one of my favorites too.
I’m going to be pleased when either Tejas or the Slegna lose, and annoyed when either of them win. I guess I’ll just put all my eggs in the Oakland basket.
This is Oakland! Our baskets are hella strong!
And if [the A’s make it to the postseason], will anything happen?
Oh, they’re going to make it – one way or another.
Nathan on in the 9th for TX 4-3 Rangers
Come on blown save!
2 on, 1 out for Trout.
yup Torii with a 2 run double after trout ked
I feel gross for being happy about this.
me too.
I feel okay about it since I’m basically rooting for the A’s.
I would feel this way if I was sure I should be rooting for the Rangers to lose rather than forgetting the division and rooting for securing the WC
Well, regardless of that game, the A’s need to TCB on their own. If we don’t, we don’t deserve either one.
right.
I love how as soon as the Angels get to the clubhouse to celebrate/get ready for the next game, the A’s jump out to a 2-0 lead
MLBTV is doing MLB Tonight all afternoon to do live look ins all day long. Nice to do a sort of Red Zone Network thing.
Beltre looks like he’s hurting.
Good stuff Tommy Milone!
2 back
Rangers lose. We’re guaranteed to be a max of 3 games out of first at the end of today regardless of what else happens today.
So if the Rangers lose the second game and we win this one we’re just a game out going into the last three? I am watching MLB Network and Larry Bowa is saying the A’s may win the West.
Yup. In fact, if we take just 2 of 3, we force a game 163 in Oakland on Thursday.
This insane season becomes completely crazy… MLB Network, the three hosts are just OMG, the Rangers are gonna cough it up and the A’s look good to shock the galaxy and take the division.
Way too early to get ahead of ourselves. Gotta just keep on winning.
yes, please
The thing that makes me think we won’t win the division is that nasty Blackley/Harrison pitching matchup on Tuesday. Even if that’s a loss, though, we could very well get to game 163 and force the Rangers to pitch someone on short rest.
Yeah, that’s the one that worries me too. I almost want to try to flip flop the Parker/Blackley starts. Almost. But I think it’s important to come out on Monday and get that win more so than Tuesday because that game guarantees at least a tie for the WC.
Kate Longworth said the A’s, Rangers and Angels could all finish tied but I don’t think that scenario is possible.
Not anymore, no.
Yeah. I was just looking at it and even if the A’s and Rangers lose today (the way it is now) they’d remain 2 back. That makes it impossible for those two to tie. It can only happen if the series starts with the A’s back by 1 or 3.
On top of that, there’s still the magic number the A’s have over the Angels. If the Angels are going to get closer to the A’s, it means the Rangers beating the A’s and likely clinching the division that way too.
Stated differently, the only way the Angels can catch the Rangers is if the A’s pass the Rangers.
Here’s what she said when I told her it didn’t work:
ok math was never my strong suit- although my info came from Fosse so I am going to double check w/him but when I did math- I can’t see Angels getting above 92 and A’s/Rangers below 93 either
I said:
Fosse’s off. If the A’s are 2 back, can’t tie TEX. 1 or 3, yes. A’s losses = TEX wins, and any 1 knocks LAA out.
She said:
yes, Fosse and I discussed it all again and what came out of it is – math is not our strong suit
Fosse is just about the last person I would trust to get this right.
I know, right?
Yeah, you know how journalists are. Birthers, gold standard-returners, climate change-deniers, Ray Fosse…every fringe loony gets equal time.
The A’s needed to drop 2 against the M’s for it work out. Angels would need to be even with the A’s and three out from the Rangers. A’s sweep the Rangers, Angels sweep the M’s. Once the A’s won yesterday the scenario went bye bye.
BAM! I love me some trips!
Whoo hoo!
KenKo’s amped today.
For real
I like this kind of party.
Don’t recall many XBH’s from Cespedes hit down the right field line.
Cespedes is just a sick, electric player and he has a chance to be Roberto FK’in Clemente, NOT an exaggeration. He will only get better as he progresses and that is gonna be terror on the other teams.
we need to sign him to an extension STAT
There’s no way a guy who negotiated a 4-year contract as he entered the league isn’t going to want to test Free Agency as soon as possible. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that it’s only a matter of time until Cespedes is a Yankee so I just want to enjoy his time with the A’s as much as possible. So far so good.
I’m just gonna cross my fingers that he ends up a Dodger with their sudden money-rain and spends his post-A’s career hitting home run after home run off the Giants.
I agree. He’s not signing an extension unless it’s for Pujols money.
Why are the white sox wearing red today?
they are bleeding out
Bring me my brown pants!
Penance?
Trouble ahead.
God Vince is awful
SEE! SEE!
I never said anything about him not being awful. I just said that your example was mediocre at worst.
fucking TOR
are you using that streamlinker? what channel is the A’s game on? i’m seeing red/whitesox in the one supposed to be for A’s.
yeah ionno
it’ll probably switch when that game is over…
hopefully
yay, it’s up.
nibble nibble nibble nibble
HAHAHAHAHA
and it’s there in plenty of time!
You ran on Reddick! You die now!
Heh
Josh Reddick has resorted to bobbling base hits to get assists now.
Whatever is going on with his shitty bat he’s not taking into the field. No panic there.
yes VC (wow do i have him up my ass now!) the A’s “can do no wrong” in this series, and “everything” falls in their favor. (has it been even 24 hours since 2 errors on the same scoring play?)
And our guy getting thrown out at the plate down two runs with two out in the 8th.
Damn. So the first team to clinch there sport in the playoffs might actually be the Tigers. Weird.
Ok vince just said that fucking Gutierez had a single and a double on the same ab. Fucking deserve it after defending him. ugg
Milone doesn’t seem to have it going today.
No, and he doesn’t have it going in slooowwwwww moootiooon.
crap.
I am not comfortable with Milone starting the play in game.
I think it will be Anderson.
At this point though, have any of the starters given any reason to feel comfortable? Parker probably has the most, though he too was semi-shaky in the early part of his last start.
Parker right now is the one I trust the most. Which isn’t to say I fully trust him.
Whew, Milone not making this easy. OTOH, he hasn’t walked anyone and the M’s aren’t tagging it especially hard.
Rookies being rookies again.
Kind of like a box of chocolates.
Vince’s habit of trying, and failing, to roll the Rs in Hispanic names is especially irritating when Erasmo Ramirez is pitching.
Let’s get those runs back and break this shit open.
and yet, i’m the one with a scatological reputation…
I would like to think that it was a cruel jab at Fosse by the CSNBA producers to give him an Ask Glen and Ray question about the 2013 roster. He kind of seemed to take it that way.
Was it a question from Scott in Gig Harbor?
Fosse did a great job sounding like a dick there.
i know how tall the pitcher is but not how many outs in the inning.
Dude, aren’t you WATCHING the game??? -Vince
That made me laugh a lot.
today hes particularly bad today
Wow – Seattle has 8 hits and we have 1?
Whew…that inning could’ve gone a lot differently.
I hope Gutierrez left the game because he was playing to good and they really want the A’s to win today.
“the throw by pennington was absolutely perfect.”
It was.
i thought it was by reddick. my bad.
I did not want to see Milone face Montero again.
Of course, I did assume Neshak could throw a strike.
Well shit. Milone could have done THAT.
I’m confident that everyone on FK could’ve done that.
I couldn’t have. One of them would have drifted out over the plate and Montero’d have crushed it.
DONALDSON!
there is a D in JD!!
That was huge from JD.
W00t! Another great escape.
Strange that I real relatively confident with Donaldson at third. I know he’ll make an error here and there, but overall, he’s capable of making both the routine and difficult plays.
I wonder if he knows he is at third
So this Raider game fking sucks.
don’t bunt!
oh criminy. why’d you listen to me?
Damn, we got Erasmo’d.
Dear Wedge,
Bring in Oliver Perez please ASAP.
Best,
Glorious Mundy
If you will it, Wedge will do it.
The thin man rocks.
Heh.
Seamen, you just got Sticked!
So earlier I turned over to the Raiders game. I was watching wondering “Are they playing on the road or at home.” And sadly, it took me a few too many beats to remember that I’ve been watching the A’s playing at home… and it was the Bronco on the 50 yard line that gave me the answer first.
Technical difficulties with the “Reddick” sign in the RFB. Heh.
Doubles as part of an anti-Lew sign when configured differently.
God, I hate that guy so much.
Double play please.
That works too. One more please.
HELL YEAH!!!
Phew.
That. Was. Awesome.
i enjoyed hearing those outs.
Damn, another Houdini act. Fantastic job by Cook..
All Star performance.
LOL
M’s 2 runs 11 hits
A’s 2 runs 2 hits
Can we take some more pitches and get this guy out of there? 2 hits into the 7th and we’re barely into the 90s in PC.
Done! And a Furbush in the hand should be worth two in the linescore.
Should help us dispatch the seamen.
The unshaven Furbush.
Good. A harmless grounder that bounces about six times before sneaking into the outfield drives the starter from the game.
there goes ramirez and here we go oakland, here we go.
Nooooo, why not Gomes or Carter?
Yeah, this seems strange and incredibly stupid to me, too.
Sigh. If Norris doesn’t swing the bat, he walks and a run scores on that.
Fine inning from Doolittle.
This has been a pretty good afternoon so far. Lots of things could have been worse, but life is good and the A’s are tied with three more outs than the Seamen have got.
So it looks like Manning has kidnapped a small handful of Raiders to be enslaved at his human puppy mill.
Doolittle needs to go one more if the A’s don’t score here.
If he can, I think it’s a fine idea.
Only 9 pitches, I’m with you on that one.
SEXY PANTS!!!!
cespedes.
My gosh! I love that man!
AHHHHH!!!
Yoenis Cespedes is clutch as hell.
He’s so clutch they need a new word for clutch to describe what he does.
Cespedes is so much fking fun to watch.
HOLY SHIT
THIS GUY!
Holy shit. This guy! This team!
I KNOW!
That ball actually looked like it was curving back fair.
omg. he stopped looking at it to look at it.
Was hoping it didn’t go foul.
When he stopped, I thought it did. I was ready to be frustrated.
Me too.
yep.
the moonshot that went over the sun.
:)
Oh thank god. Norberto shaved that nasty ass beard off.
Nice dugout glimpse of a beardless Norberto and an impish Sogard.
double fair or foul!
(reply fail)
Add on please. That’s avoid having to use Balfour.
ok
There ya go! Woohoo, JOSH!
FUCK YEAH!!! SCHLONG!!!!
SO MANY RUNS
Yes yes yes!
We have the fair fairies working in this inning.
Full body waxes for everyone!
Rangers already down 1 – 0.
Make that down 4 – 0 in the first.
They’re feeling the pressure.
they’re important games. so they’re playing them like it’s the world series.
Heh
win
Awesome
Wow!
BOOBIES
Also, I dig the long ball.
I still kind of want Doolittle to finish this one.
Looks likely that Rangers are going to have to blow out their bullpen today :)
Me likey.
I love how Wedge is waiting til now to use his better hitters.
1 more!
VICTORY
sweep!
FUCK YEAH!!!
Angels & Rangers on MLBTV
Yes! Fuckin-A Yes!
I want 94 wins.
This is all so outrageous.
MTE! And I don’t to think about too much because the implications are so overwhelming to me. But I love it!
*want
So before I forget again, what happens in the A’s and Rangers tie after 162 games?
One-gamer on Thursday in Oakland, because the A’s would have won the season series.
Do we know the time? Small sample sized be damned, Straily has been terrible in day games at the Coli.
I’d guess day time, since it would facilitate the need for one or both teams to travel immediately afterwards.
Traveling secretaries all over the league are tearing their hair out right now.
There is a really bad Mickey Morabito joke in this comment somewhere….
That guy’s hair is astounding. Very Phil Spector.
Sublime. Meta-sublime.
I’m sure they’d make it a day game because of the chance of travel afterward.
Nothing official, but I’m almost certian it would be a day game, because the loser would have to travel for a wild card game the next day (unless we lost and hosted the wild card game).
just being a contrarian, but i think night time because of the certainty of staying.
Not sure what you mean by staying, but because of the various traveling scenarios, odds are it would be a day time start even though I’m sure MLB would like to do a prime time thing for it.
sorry. irreverent oppositeing. mild trolling. sorry.
I laughed. Or at least smiled imperceptibly.
oh good.
Game 163 on Thursday. If that’s a tie, they go to a potato sack race.
tiebreaker on thursday. i think?
So, I suck at math… if the Angels hold on to beat the Rangers in game 2 of the doubleheader, do the A’s win the division if the take 2 out of 3, or do they have to sweep?
Have to sweep. 2 out 3 would equal game 163.
M’s made the A’s earn it, but they got the sweep. Here’s what we’re looking at:
A’s are 1.5 behind TEX pending tonight’s game. Will be 1 or 2 back, but LAA is leading early.
If it’s 1 behind TEX, the A’s only need to win 2 of 3 to force game 163 to decide the division.
If it’s 2 behind TEX, the A’s will win the division outright if they sweep.
At the moment the A’s magic number to eliminate TB from WC2 is 1, and for LAA it’s 2. Also remain 1 behind BAL/NYY for WC1.
Could the A’ still end up completely out of the playoffs? Yes, but the chances of that are slim and they can take the AL West.
Simply put, no matter what happens, if the A’s sweep TEX they win the west.
yeah, let’s do that one.
The other good news is BAL/TB play each other. Whoever loses those games at least helps the A’s somehow.
And maybe if we’re really lucky the Red Sox will be more motivated vs NYY than the 40-man zombie roster they’ve looked like lately.
Good for Ray Fosse not to let the language barrier thwart his need to ask a rambling serial question.
So, it’s 4-1 Angels after 1. Is this crazy FK’in team about to be 1 game out with 3 to go at home against the very team we trail???!!?
Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!?!?!
Just what the schedule makers were expecting, I’m sure.
Also, where would game 163 be played… Texas or Oakland?
Oakland
Holy crap holy crap holy crap
Anderson throwing a bullpen tomorrow right? If that goes well, the A’s may have a decision to make about whether he or Blackley starts Tuesday’s game.
If he’s even able to go two or three, it’s got to be Anderson.
Slusser has made it sound like they’ve ruled him out for the Texas series.
Yeah, best case supposedly is good bullpen tomorrow, start Thurs or Fri.
Ah ok. As long as he could start Thursday or Friday, I’m happy.
If all goes according to plan, his next start could be back at the scene of the crime (Detroit).
I definitely don’t want Detroit. Verlander. No thanks.
I don’t want them either, but I have no faith that the Red Sox can take a game from the Yankees, which is what we need to avoid the Tigers as division winners.
I actually think the Red Sox will step up against the Yankees. Not sure they’d take more than 1 game, but I don’t think they’ll get swept.
I would have expected them to want revenge on the Orioles for last year, but that sure didn’t happen.
I wouldn’t know what to do if the A’s won the division.
Celebrate?
Good Times? Come On.
Green & gold body shots?
Immediately spend the impending refund of my Wild Card game tickets on other possible postseason games.
Ervin Santana is hopeless.
Aybar tweaked something in his leg…
Yeah. Though I’m thinking the timing of that may have been to give the BP time to warm up.
No matter who wins this TEX/LAA game, it helps us somehow.
As much as I want the A’s to win the division, I also want to know that the A’s are guaranteed a playoff spot. I’m so conflicted!
I’m hoping one of the two teams wins in 16 innings after completely shredding both bullpens.
All we need to do is win. Tomorrow looks good on paper. We just need them to make it look good in the papers and we’re there.
All this stuff is giving me paper cuts.
Ok, was there a more delicious moment in today’s game than Cespedes watching and waiting to see if his drive was fair or foul?
That was THE moment, although Reddick’s was also quite yummy.
Cook’s third K in the 7th was pretty awesome too.
Another question…would a 163rd game for the division count as one of Bartolo’s 50?
If playoff games count, that one has to count too.
I want him back.
Pretty sure it’d have to.
Wow. Santana suck ass.
Seriously. I’m embarrassed for him.
Why do the Rangers ever not start Napoli? Even if he needs the rest, they have no better option at DH, right?
They DH Michael Young when Mitch Moreland plays 1B. But yeah, it’s hard to fathom not playing Napoli.
Napoli goes yard. 6-4 Rangers in the 3rd.
3-run bomb for Napoli – 6-4 Texas in bottom of the third.
Rooting for the Angels is SO HARD when they keep showing Scioscia.
It’s funny because I don’t even really care who wins or loses this game. I’d like to be one game behind Texas with a little margin of error, but knocking the Angels down to an A’s win or Angels loss eliminating them is just fine for me as well.
Same. I’m operating on the assumption that the A’s need to sweep anyways to take the division.
That would certainly simplify it.
This is a good point. I think I’m switching my allegiances in this one. Which is nice because go to hell Scioscia.
Loved that it was Napoli who hit the 3 run homer to take the lead.
LOL. I didn’t even think of that. He has two homers in this game.
I’d absolutely prefer to only have to take 3 of 4 instead of a 3 game sweep, but yeah. There’s no real lose circumstance as a result of this game’s outcome.
This is probably really stupid on my part, and feel free to call me out on it, but I like the idea of the A’s playing in a 163rd game, going with Straily, if it means getting Colon back for a potential game four scenario.
It’s an extra game but it also gives you a fallback if you DO lose 163. At least then they’d still be in the wild card game. Almost a second chance kind of thing.
I don’t see the A’s getting swept or the Angels sweeping the M’s and that’s what I see it taking for the Angels to pass/tie the A’s for that WC spot.
Yep. And if the A’s do get swept, they probably don’t deserve the spot anyway. Even still, they could still get in then.
I like still having a shot at the division, but I’m not crazy about a Thursday game, with the possibility of a Friday game in case of a loss. The poor bullpen needs a rest at some point.
And I want the Angels dead, dead, dead. And I want the Rays to keep trying so we can have a chance at getting the Wild Card game at home. (I don’t give the Red Sox much of a chance at beating the Yankees once, much less twice, which is probably what we would need.)
So the Rangers can win. I guess. That seems all kinds of wrong, though. If the A’s are a game back, the division title is a possibility even if the A’s just concede the Blackley game.
So I’m torn.
At this point, winning the division seems more likely than getting a Wild Card home game.
I hadn’t thought about that. The only way we play a home WC game is if one or both of the Orioles and Yankees drop two games. If they only lost one, we’d tie them with a sweep, but then we would win the division anyway.
In which case then there’d be some other scenarios to determine #1 and #2 teams in the AL depending on who they tie with.
We’d need both Baltimore and NY to drop a game. A tie with either would give us the top seed. Certainly with Baltimore, and I’m pretty sure we’d beat NY on the intra-division tiebreak if we win out.
Imagine the idea of going from a Wild Card game to being the top AL team, all in the span of one game.
We have 3 games left. Let’s just win those and forget the WC
Thanks, and go As.
Most definitely. I’m just saying that your WC tickets are getting refunded if we don’t sweep, unless Tampa or the Red Sox take 2 of 3.
Tampa taking 2/3 doesn’t seem all that unlikely.
True. Although they may be eliminated tomorrow, and who knows how hard they’d play after that.
That’s the problem. They’ll try in Monday’s game, because it happens before the A’s game, but then they may not care if things go well for Oakland.
And if things don’t go well for Oakland, then the A’s would still trail, with the added risk of the Rays or Angels having a shot.
I’m OK with not going to the WC game.
Thanks, and go As.
An Angels win increases the (simple) odds that the A’s get to the ALDS (or farther) by a few percent. But it also creates lots of scenarios that would involve a game 163, either for the division or for the second wild card spot, which takes away any flexibility in starting pitchers, puts strain on the bullpen, etc., and increases the chances of having to face the Angels in an elimination game.
A Rangers win means the playoffs are a near certainty, a playoff for the division is impossible, a playoff for the wildcard is extremely unlikely, and we still have a shot at the division by sweeping. All in all I think I prefer that scenario too.
gp. That Thursday off day is definitely valuable considering how many games the A’s have played in a row.
Wednesday for the division. I like that idea a lot.
Napoli with another big hit. 8-4 Rangers.
Napoli is just rubbing Scioscia’s face in it.
It’d be hilarious if the Angels fire Scioscia and sign Napoli this offseason.
Beltre’s coming out.
Beltre just left the game, after seemingly taking a ball of the wrist.
annnnnnnd a 3-run jack by HK47 has the Angels within 1, 8-7.
Time to FK up your bullpen, Wash!
I can’t believe I’m even watching this damn game.
Koji Uehara’s sideburns are underrated.
Well, pretty sure we won’t be seeing Joe Nathan tomorrow, at least.
Our magick number is now 1. Have a nice off-season, Rev.
What does it take for an SBN blog administrator to be removed from his post?
sleeping with a goat?
I will dance on their graves when they are, in fact, dead.
Good job, good effort Angels.
It’s simple: A’s win the west with a sweep. Magic number to knock out LAA/TB is 1 each.
Rangers, Yankees and Orioles all officially in the postseason in some fashion.
We’ve guaranteed ourselves of playing more than 162 games this season.
A good point.
Even better news, sort of. IF Blackley blows it and we lose Game #2, as long as by then the Angels & Rays have lost one or we’ve won Game #1, we can skip Griffin on Wednesday and rest our bullpen. That would give us, Milone, Griffin, & Straily and a full bullpen ready to go for the WC play-in game. If we win the first two games, it’ll be worth it to go all-in for the division at that point.
If NYY and the Birds lose a couple we’d still want to go all-in to host the WC game, I’d think.
Plus, I have no qualms using Griffin on Wednesday if we know that Anderson is in reserve for Friday, which it sounds like he might be.
I think it’s much more important to have a rested pitching staff than to host that game.
First comment on the HH post-game thread:
Yes, they are all claiming they are the best team in MLB but can’t prove it cuz they will miss the postseason.
They might be the best team in the MLB right now.
Well, sure. They’re the best team in the MLB right now… after the Yankees, O’s, Rangers, A’s, Washington, Cincinnati, SF, Atlanta, and maybe the Rays. Unless you want to discount nearly 162 games.
Distinct from “won more games over the last 159 games” versus “healthy and clicking on all cylinders.” The 2005 Indians missed the playoffs and I think they were the best team in the AL at the end of the year.
Meh, the right now that distinction really means nothing. You’re just talking who’s hot “now” which changes too regularly to go by.
They’ll be the best team watching the playoffs at home.
Thanks, and go As.
“It is not enough to be a good player … you must also play well” – Siegbert Tarrasch
1. CES-PE-DES! CES-PE-DES! The curtain call was awesome.
2. Man, the value deck is *awesome*!
3. Loved the Josh and Yoenis show today. Everything awesome about those guys was on display today.
4. This was the best possible outcome for the A’s, IMO. An Angels sweep would have put us one back, which means we would have had to have swept to win the division outright, or win 3/4 with game 163 shredding our pitchers for the potential play-in game on Friday. With the LAA/TEX split, we still have to sweep the division to win outright anyway. And, if we don’t get sweep, we still have a day of rest before the play-in game. The A’s really only need win a single game to be able to breathe a little easier.
4. Its sour grapes maybe, maybe glass half fulling, I am not sure, but I completely agree
It was a good day.
1. A’s win.
2. Broncos win.
3. Attended a CCI fundraiser where an attendee is somehow connected to the A’s and gave me an 8×10 photo of Reddick pie-ing Coco in the Spiderman outfit.
4. Bid on and won an A’s auction basket with 4 field tix for 2013, a ball signed by Brett Anderson, and a ball signed by Cespedes, Cowgill, Blevins, Weeks, Rosales, Doolittle, and Carnigan! And a Stomper doll!
Whoo hoo! Fantastic! Except for the second part.
Yeah, sorry about that. Well, not really sorry so much as happy that you have your fluffy white A’s cloud to enjoy right now. Honestly I came home and sort of sped through the game on Tivo. I’m so excited about the A’s right now it’s hard to even think about football.
Oh wow. That multi-signature ball is sweet.
I know right! The past two years the fundraiser has had really sweet A’s items. The woman who gave me the photo is friends with someone who adopted a CCI dog who didn’t graduate and was released from the program. She has been coming up with some really cool A’s stuff. I got out-bid on a Rickey Henderson ball that I wanted for a friend of mine who adores Rickey.
Is the smallish Golden who attends the A’s games a CCI trainee? And who are these horses of which you write?
Might be. There are two trainees I’ve seen this year. One from Guide Dogs (dark green capes) and one from CCI (Yellow and blue capes.)
That is AWESOME. Congrats on the epic autographed stuff!!
