Nevermind, I didn’t know who Chihuly was and thought it was some Cthulu reference for some reason. Someone just told me his “sister and her boyfriend are working glass artists up there. Her boyfriend interned with Chihouly (just like pretty much every glass artist up there.)”
I went to a Chihuly exhibit when it came to the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. The first two photos don’t look familiar, but the glass ceiling with colorful objects above does. I was actually pretty underwhelmed by the whole exhibit.
His reputation preceeds him in many ways, but it’s still pretty damn cool to look at his stuff. There’s a huge Chihuly in the lobby where my mom works (Camino Medical Group in Mt. View). It’s really pretty remarkable, if garrish.

Here is a cool glasswork + mirror display that I saw at the Boston ICA. Maybe part of their permanent collection? I’m pretty sure it wasn’t in a special exhibit.
A lot of the mills and smelters have closed or are only working intermittently and technology has improved enough to remove some odors, but even five years ago it was worse than now. Plus, they’ve removed a lot of the nastiness on the waterfront, so it’s a more pleasant place by all accounts.
A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
Doing that is probably a sign you’re running out of good stuff with your main characters. I loved The Boondocks before McGruder went crazy with characters, too. Then it hit a point where it either seemed to have no direction or it just didn’t grab me any more.
Huh… I could’a swore I saw 109 as the last one… Oh well. I think I need new reading glasses.

They would be crazy not to sell if the A’s were worth a lot, but they think they’ll be worth much more when the stadium issue is solved. Of course if the team value market crashes, there will be no stadium and their value will be a lot less.
The team value market will likely crash by the end of the decade as media viewing habits change and the oldest baseball-loving generation dies and isn’t replaced at the same rate.

Nah, the oldest baseball loving generation has already died. Football and basketball have grown massively in the past 50 years, much faster than baseball. Young people will love baseball at least as much as the 60 year olds of today.
I think estimates of their value right now are inflated anyway. SD had that mega contract to add value. It also has relatively new digs. The A’s have neither.
Yeah, but they’re an extant property on a rising tide that’s raising all boats.
You really think the A’s couldn’t fetch $550-600m right now?

Just bought tickets to see the Lake Monsters play the Brooklyn Cyclones this weekend. Good timing, too — looks like Addison Russell is onboard as of this week.
I’m going the 12th, in Brooklyn. One of these days I’ll try to make it up to Vermont. Never been to the ballpark at Coney Island, so I’m really looking forward to it.
Wow! So the BBC ran a story last year that a $9M bribe had been paid to put the fix in, and then they still went ahead and tried to do it? I have to admire the Azerbaijani chutzpah, at least.

Are there any? I guess CSI used to have Fishburne, Scrubs had that surgeon guy, Ugly Betty had Latinos, The Unit had Cerrano. But there really isn’t much anymore.
You’d think there would have to be at least one but I can’t think of any. Meanwhile, Matthew Perry is getting the chance to run his 3rd show into the ground after Friends and rating continue to go down across the board.
i like soap the show now (i’m not sure if you’re saying you didn’t like the show or the benson role in the soap). i used to not. or not get it. benson benson was smoother as a show but so much more standard too.

I have wanted so much to like both of those movies. But they were not good, and even worse they were total mumblers. I would have to go back and watch with captioning to even understand it and I dont think I will waste the time.
I thought the first one was fun for what it was. They aren’t anything like the books but I thought it moved fast and didn’t take itself seriously. The second was just inept and the story…was there one?…didn’t do much.

On the other hand, I think STEM folks, in general, have it a little bit easier. My impression is you’re not necessarily expected to go into academia or research with a STEM doctorate, unlike other fields.
Maybe so, but you still spend your grad school years working with professors and post-docs, so pretty much your only examples are people who took the academic route.
It depends. I was abd in pure math, where most people stay in academia. It turns out I’m a lot happier in industry, but it would have been nice to have the degree on my resume.
Same as Colin in terms of it being a requirement for my job, though I have people in my group who don’t have one so there are still some avenues open (though at labs rather than universities).
Because I left academia after my undergraduate degree, when I did return it was with a much clearer sense of what I was doing it for and what I wanted out of it. So not only did I get this extraordinary job out of it, but even at the time I really enjoyed doing it.
Now that I’m a teacher part of me wonders what kind of student I’d be if I decided to do it. I also wonder how I’d fine the time but it’s something I’m kicking around.
I would really like to go back for my MBA. Issues
-Wouldnt do much to help me carer wise

-Mrs. Aces already held my hand through my BS while working, etc and she is prepping to go back and get some education, certifictions, etc and I want to even our score first.
My wife will go back to get her BA. We want to have another kid and we both want her to stay with the kids until they’re about 4 but then she’s going back to school so I’d have to get my PhD in the next few years.
I like the way you think. She had me on the floor laughing right before I came home with her giggles…it’s just so funny and cute…and yes I realize every partent thinks their kid is the greatest thing ever but in this case it’s true.
If you go for a PhD, make sure it is something that you actually like studying. I think that getting a PhD in a subject that you don’t like, but you need as a stepping stone to some other position, would be pretty difficult.
I don’t mean to imply that you are only interested in the PhD as a stepping stone, just that you should think about whether it is a topic that you want to spend years studying (whether it’s in education or some other field).
i went to NYU for a masters in cultural studies that i didn’t get.
—still paying it off
—work in a career completely different than cultural studies
—glad i’m not a prof, and that’s pretty much what i was on track to do
—if i hadn’t gone to NYU, ran out of money when the loan was only available to people taking 12 units and NYU not allowing me to take 12 when i only had 11 left in my program, i never would have temped at the agency that sent me to mcgraw hill, where i first learned book design, which is what i’m doing now. or, should be doing now but i’m *busy* entertaining you FKrs.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
but you were right in wanting to match up specialty. your f’ee should, when ready, go grab 3 newly/recently published books closest to hers in topic or angle if nonfic, in style or target audience if fiction. read the acknowledgements. the first or second name thanked will be the author’s agent. go online to look them up, pick a favorite, and write a query.
or use NM’s resource. if the agency’s big like that they will match agents to the book.
bottom line, be comfortable with your agent.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
Sorry, I didn’t mean skepticism like “nm’s contact probably works for some crappy self-publishing scam” or anything like that. She knows a lot of the agencies due to years of working as a librarian, serving on committees that get schmoozed up by publishing types, plus a couple of previous rounds of manuscript submission. So she has a pretty good idea of agents that might match up well with her work (a lot of them found using exactly the technique that AV recommends). I will let her know about Inkwell…
@colin, fair enough. I’m sure there are a ton of specialized areas they don’t cover, but I know just from the times I’ve talked to her that they do fiction / non-fiction / cook books / children’s books, which is a pretty broad net, and I’m sure not limited just to those.

It sounds like it’s worked for you. I have a vague plan to return to academia at some point in the nearish future to pursue some post-graduate education, but I don’t have that clear sense of what path yet (masters, MBA, etc.). I hope that I get a better sense of things at some point and can have a similar experience.
I’m putting together some tests for my freshman. The good news is I can answer almost half the questions without looking them up. Thank god they give us that book with all the answers.

I sometimes wonder if I had gotten a MFA in Theatre Arts if that would have been an interesting life? I do miss performing and teaching that would be fun.
An old friend of mine who followed that path ended up with a decent teaching job with a college theatre by the time he turned 40 or so. Before that, it was many years of debt and struggling and backstage jobs with small productions and rigging companies, etc…

i had a decent time at cal state long beach but i applied only there because i didn’t believe in myself/my grades/my ability to get scholarhips. i blame HS counseling for not explaining stuff to the students. you had to go IN to the counseling office to get help, but they never told the school in general that that’s what they did. as a kid, i didn’t know that getting into college started as far back as junior year. my parents had no clue about how you go about getting into college and i’d find out from my “smart” friends (as opposed to the punks i actually hung out with) like a week before stuff was due. they’d mention something about how they were working on an essay and i’d say, “what’s it for? …oh?? …and it’s due tomorrow?!?” so i just applied to state, and the one 5 miles away at that. prolly could have gotten into UC and with a little $$ help too.

I feel your pain. I had an old, mean bastard as a GC. He told me to quit school as a junior get a GED and go play golf. What a fuckhead. I thought of him when I got my Masters Degree.
Mine was actually a negative. He got pissed that I didn’t heed his advice about taking too many honors classes in a year (I think it was sophomore year, when I took two (!!!)). After that, he was kind of a dick about my college application stuff.
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
I don’t think I ever really went to meet with the guidance counselor, or else I have just forgotten about it. I mostly remember hearing from friends that the counselor just constantly recommended applying to easier schools.
I went to college thinking I was going to be a journalist which is why I went for English. But I got hooked on working in political camapigns and fell in love with history so things changed.
i started undecided and ended up an english major just because i got the top grade in in comp 101 and because the sciences had these BS labs that took 3 or 4 hours out of each week but only counted for 1 unit.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
I did this too for some of the 1,700 page books I had to read about Kissinger. I would always read those books using his voice in my head…made me laugh.
I agree and didn’t do it at all. The first half of college I already had a bunch of friends going so I didnt reach out. The second time I was working fulltime and with wife and kid so I felt like I didnt have time to, but looking back it held me back more than I wish.
Related – I probably wouldn’t have been so insistent on going out of state, when I could have saved money by going to Berkeley or Davis. At the same time, I don’t regret being in the greater Chicagoland area, both because it’s a cool place to be and I was able to spend a lot of time with my grandmother right after my grandfather died. But that’s hindsight – as is, I guess, all of this.
A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
True dat. But in many ways, about the only places that weren’t “new” to me would have been Santa Clara U or San Jose State. Berkeley and Davis would have been familiar, but still “new” for a near-lifetime South Bay-er, perhaps less familiar than Chicago, where I was born and had/have lots of family.
A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
My main point is that college ended up being much more about the experience than the degree; I would’ve had maybe a somewhat different experience close to home, but it likely would have included the same (booze/drugs/girls/bad food/cultural experiences) albeit with maybe a somewhat different flavor.
A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
Yeah, the experience is the thing and of course that changes depending on where you go. For me KU was great because a lot of the students were from all over the midwest and as a Sacramento boy I found that interesting. We also had a lot of students from all over the world, especially Africa and that lead me to some wonderful moments including falling in love with a girl from Ethiopia.
I want to push the Eldest Ace to move at least a little. He is so introverted that I don’t know if he would do great going to another state, but if I could get him to the coast or north or south a bit I think it would really open his eyes.
In fact, I wouldn’t have gone to college at all; I would have been more aggressive about getting my band signed and going on tour, rather than keeping it local and being a full time student for two years.

Man Trout is almost to good to hate.
I’m having George Brett flashbacks, the guy killed the Brewers ( my hometown team) repeatedly, I couldn’t boo him…
It’s funny, after the ASG, I wondered if Billy would consider trading Cook to get a SS or C. Even if he hadn’t fallen apart lately, I think it would’ve been worth it if he landed someone really good.
Is anyone else infuriated by a 21-year-old kid, no matter how amazingly-skilled, with 4 months in MLB arguing every single strike call like he’s Jim Thome and has been playing in the majors for decades?
Never suck on a Blow Pop with the microphone open.
He was never really that good. He was extremely fortunate with home runs and BABIP earlier this season and now he’s not. He’s had a mid 4 xFIP pretty much the entire season.
His peripherals are somewhat similar to Henry Rodriguez’s.
I haven’t been able to watch many games, but some of the early season games that I did watch featured some ridiculous stuff from Cook. He walked too many even for being unhittable, but having potentially unhittable stuff should count for something. I guess I’m saying that I still have hopes for Cook improving into a bullpen ace.
gggrrrr. when i go to MLB.com all gloaty like because my team just won an important game and all the other games are still in the 3rd or 4th, so i figure they just GOTTA have my interests in mind and perhaps on the front page too… i DON’T want to see a picture of a bunch of losers (angels) high-fiving from some play 5 innings ago (that was easily trumped by chris’ HR a little later anyway). they did NOT win. they do NOT get to be there. they can suck third place and MLB can too.

ok, I’m back at work now. That was not the most enjoyable game that I’ve seen this year. It was stressful and it took forever!
Miller not only made some bad calls, but he lost track of the count at least twice.
A’s MVP for the game? Latroy Hawkins
Of the 5 most frequently used Angels relief pitchers, 4 are over 35 years old. Hawkins and Isringhausen alone have a combined 35 years of MLB experience.
Pujols only got 1 hit in the entire series.
1. All these sudden disposition changes are bad for the humors
2. Doolittle for closer!
3. 27:22 K/BB! 1.044 OPS!
4. Me too. With the offense more or less clicking, having a great starter return is excellent.
2. Just for kicks, I set off on an expedition to justify Blackley for closer. I ended up forming the opinion that… Doolittle should be closer (or, at least, that he’s the best pitcher in the bullpen).
Fun! The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (in the warm California sun!) has a nice old carny vibe to it which is lost at more modern amusement parks. And it was a spectacular day for driving Highway 1, which I love.

awesome. i’m a lil sad they started charging a park entrance rather than per ride. i used to live a few blocks away from the b-walk and it was fun going for just a ride or two. especially on wednesdays or whatever the cheap day used to be. except. never go on the zipper with a roommate who just ate mushrooms and then cotton candy because he WILL puke. and being trapped in a spinning cage with puke floating at zero G’s is… let’s just say it was a good thing we lived so close.

i’m sorting the evidence out (mostly just looking at b-walk website ticket prices) and i think i can narrow it down to two versions of what happened. she went with nephews, sister, and rich aunt. rich aunt just bought the $30 day pass for everyone. then, 2 months later, when we were driving through town with my niece after looking at tide pools at bridges and on our way to taqueria vallarta, i said let’s go catch a quick ride to show the little one, and she was either confused by her previous time or just didn’t want to stop and lied to my face.

That’s fantastic. I have yet to explore what Tacoma has done to rid itself its stinky pulp and paper mill town reputation, but I really need to.
I honestly didn’t notice it.
A lot of the mills and smelters have closed or are only working intermittently and technology has improved enough to remove some odors, but even five years ago it was worse than now. Plus, they’ve removed a lot of the nastiness on the waterfront, so it’s a more pleasant place by all accounts.
I’ve read about it, at least. Something about “the aroma of Tacoma.”
I like that one a lot.
I love it when they do this in Get Fuzzy:
Hmm, 2010 copyright. Maybe they’re running repeats this week.

Yeah, there was a time when get fuzzy was pretty much a guaranteed laugh. Not so any more.
I’d pay $550 for ’em.
Can I have $550M?
Thanks, and go As.
Sure, as long as you give me ownership of the A’s and we forget about that pesky “M”
I’d think the A’s given their situation would top out closer to $450 – 500.
Didn’t we trade Benson to Washington?
For a catcher.
Just bought tickets to see the Lake Monsters play the Brooklyn Cyclones this weekend. Good timing, too — looks like Addison Russell is onboard as of this week.
Also Daniel Robertson
this weekend, like the 11? is it in VT or BKLN?
I’m going the 12th, in Brooklyn. One of these days I’ll try to make it up to Vermont. Never been to the ballpark at Coney Island, so I’m really looking forward to it.
sounds fun. I’ll be in Western Mass this weekend and most of next week. I mostly have decided against the 3 hour driver to burlington for a game.
Interesting write up of some mechanical changes that Carter has made over at BP. I think its subscriber only though.
It is very illuminating
Also, anyone else going to today’s game?
Anyone (FSU?) following Olympic boxing? At the pro level everyone knows the sport is completely corrupt, but this kind of thing seems pretty crazy.
It’s all about getting them ready for the pros, in more ways than one.
Wow! So the BBC ran a story last year that a $9M bribe had been paid to put the fix in, and then they still went ahead and tried to do it? I have to admire the Azerbaijani chutzpah, at least.
Meh. They’ve got nothing on the GOP
Chavez still has the aim: http://itsaboutthemoney.net/archives/2012/08/08/hey-hey-hey-bonk-awww/
what i’m taking out of this is that he’s holding out a little loyalty to the A’s by not learning the yankee’s names and is just calling them “hey.”
His expression is priceless. I must’ve watched that 20 times.
can’t stop watching this
one-eleven? this game is gonna be a love missile!
nice
a quick panoramic vacation. or, who’s been doing donuts on mars?
Walter White
In his boots of Chinese plastic.
I looked so badass today on my motorcycle in my helmet, polo shirt and cargo shorts.
I think I’m the only rider in Arkansas who wears a helmet but I’m glad I had it on as I got caught in a thunderstorm.
Are you also the only rider in Arkansas who wears a polo shirt?
That’s also possible.
What kind of bike do you have?
Suzuki Boulevard.
I used to have a 1983 Tempter.
I also used to not have a road pizza scar on my leg, too.
I fixed up and puttered around on a mid 80s Honda Nighthawk a couple of years ago. I miss riding.
I do rather like the M109R.
Thanks, and go As.
Good man. You’re a father, and taking care of a post-accident vegetable sucks.
Seriously, dude, you should at least wear thick jeans when you ride. Accidental tailpipe scorches on bare legs hurt.
Bed don’t do jeans…haven’t worn a pair since 1991. But you’re right it is a bit dodgy wearing shorts but it’s so damn hot outside right now.
dockers, doc
I wear them all the time.
Sweating > Bleeding
Thanks, and go As.
big time.
Fair point.
I second this. Road rash is horrible. Better to ruin a pair of pants than your skin.
I remember watching Benson a lot when I was a kid. It’s odd that here we are nearly 30 years later and there are less shows on network TV with minority leads.
:(
Are there any? I guess CSI used to have Fishburne, Scrubs had that surgeon guy, Ugly Betty had Latinos, The Unit had Cerrano. But there really isn’t much anymore.
You’d think there would have to be at least one but I can’t think of any. Meanwhile, Matthew Perry is getting the chance to run his 3rd show into the ground after Friends and rating continue to go down across the board.
I guess you could count The Cleveland Show
A cartoon huh?…and isn’t a white guy doing the voice? I remember reading something about it but I’m not sure.
Wouldn’t surprise me
Did you prefer Benson Benson, or Soap Benson?
I disliked Soap but liked Benson. But I think that was more of the fact I was a bit older and “got” Benson.
Soap Benson is a little before my time. I know about the show but I never watched it.
i like soap the show now (i’m not sure if you’re saying you didn’t like the show or the benson role in the soap). i used to not. or not get it. benson benson was smoother as a show but so much more standard too.
The former. I am like you-as I got older I “got” Soap.
Although I still don’t know how you go from the butler to basically running the state of OR (it was OR and not WA, right?)
a) i learned to get soap by watching mary hartman mary hartman.
b) by eavesdropping?
c) connecticut.
How wierd. I would have sworn it was OR. Wiki says that the state was never mentioned on Benson, but it was CT in Soap so you would assume he didnt move cross country… Thats what I get for trusting 10 year old me’s memory.
that’s nothing. i told FSU last week about a car with wood paneling i see all the time. today i saw it again and it’s got no wood at all. and even after that realization, i close my eyes and still see the paneling in my mind.
I too pictured it that way, and it made me happy. So thanks!
I was just discussing this w/ a friend regarding the racist olympic tweets, I think we’ve gone backwards the last 20 yrs.
Kids can’t be kids, prudes have tripled, folks want to dismantle Equal Opportunity ( already gone in WI.), emergence of a frothing intolerant religious right, etc…
So there’s 2 Sherlock Holmes tv shows and the Downey movies….what’s next a Sherlock Broadway musical?
Maybe he can dance fight with Moriarty like they’re in West Side Story.
By the way the last Downey movie was kind of terrible.
He’s had an uppey and downey career.
He has indeed. He was fine in the movie but the plot was weak and while Jared Harris is a fine actor he was a limp Moriarty.
I didn’t see the second one, but I thought the first one was bad for pretty much the reasons that you listed, so maybe I should just avoid #2.
Yeah if you didn’t like the first one I can’t imagine you’ll enjoy the second. The bad guys even have the same plan.
So was the first one.
Couldn’t hold a candle to Jeremy Brett
I spent the morning in Fort Smith, Arkansas….please try not to be jealous of my glam lifestyle.
You were up in Reverend Billy Lard country, eh?
Well, for me it’s down in Lard country but yes I was in the Fort. Catching up with some friends and setting the stage for our football fantasy draft party…we’re so cool.
Did you join the FK Fantasy League that YonYonson set up? There’s a post about it from a week or so ago.
Can you do more than one league? Is that legal? Is it ethical?
I dunno.
I’m only planning on doing 16 picks this year. My fantasy football time budget is ten minutes a week, and I’d like to keep it that way.
Have those concerns ever stopped you before?
DUDE!! It never hit me until you said this right now.
We have a vendor in Fort Smith. Can I give you like $5 to go back and knock some fools upside the head?
I’ll go whack em’ with my 9 iron.
Louisville Slugger to the dome.
Section 216, last row. Gorgeous day for baseball.
I’m jealous.
nice.
yay!!!
Stuck at work on interminable telecons after all :-(
boo
Wednesday is my only zero-telecon day. It is glorious!
I’m on my 4th this week, with 3 to go including one tomorrow at 11am.
Central European time.
I don’t think I’ve ever done one.
If they’re run well they can be useful, but mostly they’re not and have become a bad habit.
Two of my regular ones are run by people who cannot stop talking, and just turn into hour long monologues.
Who knows maybe at some point I’ll teach classes where no one is in the room with me.
We don’t really have major timezone problems on Keck, but QUIET definitely did. Our solution involved making the Japanese collaborators stay up really late.
Awesome
Yeah staily Straik outs
NICE day oakland. glad i got out of the house.
you make it to the game?
nah. pondered it but too much work. i slept from 5am to 11 after a looong time awake and i was considering just working from bed, that’s what i meant about getting out.
It’s 90 in the valley already, on the way to 103.
It’s actually not bad out now after the rain. My backyard needs some work and it might be nice enough outside to go do it.
He does yardwork and rides his motorcycle in a polo shirt….HE’S SUBURBAN DAD!
Dont remind me. Highs for the next several days 103,104,107,111,108,107. And I don’t think I can escape anywhere either… =(
Ooh… you’re getting it worse than we are. The rivers definitely help keep things a few degrees cooler up here.
Another Straike out
Wow, Dan. nice
He just struck out the side in the first, eh?
yup
Wow, Andy Reid is already back at work. I guess everyone deals with loss in their own way.
Zack Greinke kinda looks like Peter Dinklage.
Game of Thrones is one of those shows that several friends say I need to watch.
It’s good! Dinklage is fantastic.
Fantasy is not normally my cup of tea but I’ve heard so many good things I probably should give it a try.
Well, that’s exactly my boat. But it’s really just a drama/soap opera wrapped in a medieval/fantasy cloak, so it’s fun!
First season is solid, second not so much.
I can totally see that. Greinke is probably really tall, right?
Yeah.
It’s in the face, tho. They both have very square features.
That just makes it better — you have big Dinklage and little Dinklage. Then you have Bed… his dinklage is five inches, but it’s thick.
Ken fooled me on moss’ flyout
DRILLED?
Thanks, and go As.
he is not bad
Looked out on TV, too.
Anybody here have a PhD?
I have a keyboard with those letters
Has having those letters on your keyboard helped your career?
I am sure with the fancy sciency guys sure
It’s just something I’ve thought about. If I ever wanted to get into administration having one would allow me to go up the chain.
By administration, do you mean like a principal or something higher up than that? Do those people often have PhDs in education, or in other fields?
Yeah, a principal and yes it’s in education usually. I’m not even sure what I’d have to do. My Masters is in American Studies and my BA is in History.
A few of us.
A serious question then…has it helped your career and are you glad you got it?
My job title is “post-doc”, so I couldn’t have this job if I didn’t get a PhD.
Right. I imagine many of your are in jobs where you have to have one.
It’s definitely possible that I might look back some day and decide that this was a stupid career choice.
I think all of us risk that.
That was a big part of why I left my program.
-$$$
Another kid? Are you bored with the first one already?
ik, r?
Yeah, all she does is giggle. I need a kid I can make some money off of.
Record her giggles and sell it as a laugh track.
I like the way you think. She had me on the floor laughing right before I came home with her giggles…it’s just so funny and cute…and yes I realize every partent thinks their kid is the greatest thing ever but in this case it’s true.
I love listening to my god daughter laugh. And I love that she does it a lot.
My God Daughter keeps making me offers I can’t refuse.
I hope you don’t own any horses.
If you go for a PhD, make sure it is something that you actually like studying. I think that getting a PhD in a subject that you don’t like, but you need as a stepping stone to some other position, would be pretty difficult.
That’s good advice. It’s something I have some thinking to do about.
I admire professors but I always wanted to teach at the High School level.
I have a bunch of friends that do book design. What firm do you work for?
my biz name is bookish design. no web presence. still working on my site design!
who are your friends who do book design? chronicle people? mcsweeney’s?
One of the grad students I work with is buddies with the editor of Lucky Peach, hence the “Interview with a South Pole Chef” from issue 3.
if that editor is chris y., HE WAS MY INTERN! and he’s an A’s fan.
Nice. Chris S (the grad student in question) is also an A’s fan, though a bit suspect since he is from Orange County.
so’s chris y. then again, so am i.
That makes sense. I think the two Chris’s went to high school together.
newport area i think.
hey!
My gf just turned me on to that mag… fking excellent
I’m surprised that you weren’t into it already! They know their food, but it’s also just a really entertaining read.
didn’t know it existed.
Two former Chronicle employees and a free lancer that mostly does children’s books
Presumably all now collaborating on a book directed to the newspaper industry, titled Go The Fuck Out Of Business.
there’s no connection between chronicle books and the chronicle newspaper (anymore).
Insert plug for my book-agent friend here.
ted? the only one i know in this area.
She’s in NY, but she’ll read anything I send
what do you send? your own writing?
They are more manifestos, really
I’ve commented on this before, but I can pass things along from anyone who has something they’d like an agent to read (chapter, manuscript, etc).
Also, as Ed suggests, poorly written texts.
if it saves some FKer the stress of a query letter, they should jump on the offer.
colin has a point, what’s her specialty?
What kind of writing does she handle?
Her company takes on anything. If she’s the wrong person she can take things from there.
Name, or agency, or something? I don’t want to pry, but my aspiring writer / fiancee is skeptical.
The company is Inkwell. I don’t see what was skepticism inducing, but there you have it.
don’t be skeptial, c. agents welcome incoming.
but you were right in wanting to match up specialty. your f’ee should, when ready, go grab 3 newly/recently published books closest to hers in topic or angle if nonfic, in style or target audience if fiction. read the acknowledgements. the first or second name thanked will be the author’s agent. go online to look them up, pick a favorite, and write a query.
or use NM’s resource. if the agency’s big like that they will match agents to the book.
bottom line, be comfortable with your agent.
@colin,
“aspiring writer/fiancée” could use a bracket for clarity
@colin, fair enough. I’m sure there are a ton of specialized areas they don’t cover, but I know just from the times I’ve talked to her that they do fiction / non-fiction / cook books / children’s books, which is a pretty broad net, and I’m sure not limited just to those.
@NM They do cook books? Perhaps it is time I restart my cook book project.
Lots of ’em. Up to and including people like Bourdain.
Every time you post this, one of my inner voices gnaws at me to get back to the writing grindstone.
Maybe Bed and I should collaborate and write “Illuminatus IV: The Dead Sexy Years”
My wife is all over me to write something, so I make sure I never mention this at home. Sticking to my aim low-reach goals-avoid disappointment routine
When did you start to aim low? This morning?
Free-diving the Marianas Trench?
If shes unhappy, Im sure every fker here will participate in a gladiatoral deathmatch for the right to replace her.
I’m pretty sure any book by you would be given the Pulitzer before even having an agent representing it.
It sounds like it’s worked for you. I have a vague plan to return to academia at some point in the nearish future to pursue some post-graduate education, but I don’t have that clear sense of what path yet (masters, MBA, etc.). I hope that I get a better sense of things at some point and can have a similar experience.
You mean a pretty huge d—? Yeah, not me.
I’ve heard that about you.
Talking to who? There aren’t many people who would know.
Bridget the Midget told me…of me she said…it’s inches but it’s thick.
Oh yeah? Well she told me that I was “better than nothing.”
Well, at least you have that going for you.
It’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.
I’m ABD (all but dead/dissertation). But I left my program a few months ago. Long story.
booo!
Wait, Straily didn’t strike out Morales. What’s up with that?
I don’t like this inning as much as the first
It’s getting better.
The rare televised work-day game, but of course every restaurant/bar TV is tuned to the olympics. Not sure why I even bothered looking.
wooooo hoooooo!
The Carter-Kottar combo.
Kottaras and Norris are both better than Kurt
Dammit, I went to the kitchen and missed that!
small sacrifices. go again.
on it
How about this one:
Straily Train.
I’m going with The Strike Out Kid.
that puts disco in my head.
how about now?
That’s what it put in my head.
i’m still wearing spandex. but the soundtrack has improved.
I’m putting together some tests for my freshman. The good news is I can answer almost half the questions without looking them up. Thank god they give us that book with all the answers.
Much like a Supreme Court justice, you can’t be expected to read the subject matter.
Yep, when I want to find the answers I just follow Thomas’ lead and answer it however Scalia does
I totally picture him following Scalia around, wearing the same clothes and ordering the same food in restaurants…
There are several things I’d love to change one of them is 1 ten year term for Supreme Court justices. I hate any jobs for life type stuff.
BUT IT’S IN THE CONSTITUTION! WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICA??
Hating America is just how I roll.
Politics don’t matter, it’s time for football now.
OK, the plan is simple – whenever a division rival acquires an ace, we’ll get his catcher to hit home runs off him
Wow. I just got called a geek by someone who watches Stargate Universe. Seriously.
On Gameday, it looks like a couple of the “balls” thrown to Weeks were very much inside the strike zone. Are the pitchers getting squeezed?
A bit, yeah
I saw a tv, it didn’t look it to me
I’ve seen the A’s batters talking to the home plate ump more than what I think is normal.
Are you serious Pennington? Picked off of second?
FKING PENNINGTON.
Oh Penny…
At times the A’s have had very good short stops…this is not one of those times.
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, but he’s a great base runner
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit or run the bases, but he’s a great fielder.
Penny error coming up in 10, 9, 8…
I would also have accepted:
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, run the bases or field, but he’s a great clubhouse presence.
etc etc
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, run the bases or field and he’s a clubhouse cancer, but he’s got a nice smile.
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, run the bases or field and he’s a clubhouse cancer with a snaggle-toothed snarl of a smile, but he doesn’t smell that bad.
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, run the bases or field and he’s a clubhouse cancer with a snaggle-toothed snarl of a smile who smells like rotting entrails, but he’s basically toilet-trained.
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, run the bases or field and he’s a clubhouse cancer with a snaggle-toothed snarl of a smile who smells like rotting entrails and craps in his team-mates lockers, but he’s got his cannibalism under control now.
OK, perhaps Pennington can’t hit, run the bases or field and he’s a clubhouse cancer with a snaggle-toothed snarl of a smile who smells like rotting entrails and craps in his team-mates lockers, and he eats small children, but he’s really good at crossword puzzles.
OK, so maybe Pennington can’t hit, run the bases, field, and he’s a clubhouse cancer with a snaggle-toothed snarl of a smile who smells like rotting entrails and craps in his team-mates lockers, and he eats small children and is too dumb for crossword puzzles, but at least he can do paint-by-numbers without FKing it up.
Thanks, and go As.
too much…
OK, so maybe Pennington can’t hit, run the bases, field, and he’s a clubhouse cancer with a snaggle-toothed snarl of a smile who smells like rotting entrails and craps in his team-mates lockers, and he eats small children and is too dumb for crossword puzzles, or do paint-by-numbers without FKing it up, but at least he has a small ownership share in the team.
awesome. glad it’s these A’s who showed up today.
He’s come such a long way!
If that’s the only mustache you can grow do the world a favor and don’t.
I see CJ Wilson has been teaching Greinke about Lawyerball
ha ha. “right now, greinke doesn’t have a clue.”
BAD GRIENKE
it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
If you could be 18 again would you go back and do the same major in college?
No, I’d study business administration and photography this time.
I’m sorry I can’t remember what did you major in at New Mexico?
Everything. But I got my degree in history.
We’re twins.
I’m the dead sexy one, though.
I’m sure that’s the case.
I sometimes wonder if I had gotten a MFA in Theatre Arts if that would have been an interesting life? I do miss performing and teaching that would be fun.
That’s what I studied.
Yes, SPWC was a Theatre major. (sigh)
An old friend of mine who followed that path ended up with a decent teaching job with a college theatre by the time he turned 40 or so. Before that, it was many years of debt and struggling and backstage jobs with small productions and rigging companies, etc…
I have found that a lot of experimental physicists have theater tech backgrounds. But also physics backgrounds, of course.
Interesting, probably.
Loaded with stress to the point of a nervous breakdown, more likely.
not sure, but i’d certainly apply to more colleges than just the one down the street.
Heh…well, I sure didn’t do that. I was hell bent on going away for college. The plan was to go to college in Hawaii which of course lead me to Kansas.
i had a decent time at cal state long beach but i applied only there because i didn’t believe in myself/my grades/my ability to get scholarhips. i blame HS counseling for not explaining stuff to the students. you had to go IN to the counseling office to get help, but they never told the school in general that that’s what they did. as a kid, i didn’t know that getting into college started as far back as junior year. my parents had no clue about how you go about getting into college and i’d find out from my “smart” friends (as opposed to the punks i actually hung out with) like a week before stuff was due. they’d mention something about how they were working on an essay and i’d say, “what’s it for?
I thought of him when I got my Masters Degree.
up until mid senior year, i honestly thought the counseling office was there just to give emotional support on personal problems.
I think my GC would have just said rub dirt on it for any emotional pain.
NM, did you have any experience with the guidance counselor at Tam? My memory is that there was basically no counseling at all.
Mine was actually a negative. He got pissed that I didn’t heed his advice about taking too many honors classes in a year (I think it was sophomore year, when I took two (!!!)). After that, he was kind of a dick about my college application stuff.
I don’t think I ever really went to meet with the guidance counselor, or else I have just forgotten about it. I mostly remember hearing from friends that the counselor just constantly recommended applying to easier schools.
Definitely that too. Especially after my “career survey” thing pointed me towards a job paving roads for CalTrans.
Better than being a damn lawyer, amirite?
I wasn’t going to say it.
Sure. I’m just saying he put rather more emphasis on the test than I did. I think I’d said I like playing sports and math, so it spit that answer out.
No doubt that the test is stupid, but I couldn’t let that get in the way of a lawyer joke.
well, the world needs lawyers, too.
If only there were more of us…

Yes, but I would’ve strayed from the core curriculum a little bit more.
I started out as an English major but the writing of 19th century dead English chicks wore me down.
I took two English lit courses in college and sympathize with you very well.
Yep, getting the BS takes more time over the BA. It was always at least a couple more hours a week when I went.
i meant the fertilizer, if you unintentionally punned that.
or, ha ha, if you did it intentionally.
I just meant the science studies which had more lab work took more time during the week to finish.
sometimes i used the chemistry for dummies lab to read for the classes that required a novel or more a week.
I did this too for some of the 1,700 page books I had to read about Kissinger. I would always read those books using his voice in my head…made me laugh.
I would get the same degree but I would go back to HS and do some homework so I could get into a better school to start out with.
since I am bad at math, yes
If I was trying to get a BS in some sort of math I’d still be at KU.
i took “liberal arts math” and we literally counted dash marks. ||| + ||| = O|
yes but i would get out and make more connections, not stick in the same dead in jobs for years, and not stop hakfway through for 3 years.
I made a lot of friends at KU and it’s helped both in life and my career. To me that’s one of the big things to do at college.
I agree and didn’t do it at all. The first half of college I already had a bunch of friends going so I didnt reach out. The second time I was working fulltime and with wife and kid so I felt like I didnt have time to, but looking back it held me back more than I wish.
No fucking way.
I’d probably try to actually get a degree
Thanks, and go As.
Yes, but I’d take at least a year out before going and I wouldn’t be so precious about where I applied.
I really think going away for college is a good thing if you can swing it. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone and live someplace new.
I had never even flown over Kansas before I moved there so it was a brand new adventure.
My main point is that college ended up being much more about the experience than the degree; I would’ve had maybe a somewhat different experience close to home, but it likely would have included the same (booze/drugs/girls/bad food/cultural experiences) albeit with maybe a somewhat different flavor.
Not much different for me except replace Ethiopia with that most exotic of all exotic places, Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
I’ve heard that Chagrin Falls is the Paris of Ohio.
Paris, Ohio
It looks like Lisbon, Liverpool, Toledo, and London are taken, too, so that makes Chagrin Falls the Addis Ababa of Ohio.
I want to push the Eldest Ace to move at least a little. He is so introverted that I don’t know if he would do great going to another state, but if I could get him to the coast or north or south a bit I think it would really open his eyes.
Every kid is different of course. I think some kids blossom when they find out about the world outside their window.
FK no.
In fact, I wouldn’t have gone to college at all; I would have been more aggressive about getting my band signed and going on tour, rather than keeping it local and being a full time student for two years.
Were you trying to do the practical thing at the time rather than doing what you really wanted to do?
Yeah, pretty much.
It’s something many of us do. I made sure my 20’s were all about living whatever dream I had at the time which is why I didn’t get married or even think about having kids back then.
Beddie, m’boy, my twenties sucked dogshit for the most part. Dying lovers and friends, depression, and drugs drugs drugs.
If I had to relive it all without being able to change anything, I’d rather just sleep 19-29 away.
It’s ALL better now, other than the wounds from back then that will never heal all the way.
I would have double-majored it with something useful, and skipped my minor.
C’mon rook.
Really hope leaving the bases loaded doesn’t bite us in the arse.
The Penny-pickoff cost at least one run, maybe more – would the Carter ground out have been a double-play?
yes
I’d say yeah, but a single would make it be 6/7-2.
I remember being like 8 and always praying for a triple play every time there were 2 on and 0 outs. The more things change…
Bobby Crosby doesn’t play for the **gles sadly.
I honestly think I have a better arm than Coco Crisp.
i know what it’s like to have a noodle arm.
lol.
just wait 8 years. you’re gonna need a fork for leverage just to open a can of beer.
Trout’s speed vs Crisp’s arm just isn’t fair.
YESPEDES!
What a beautiful throw!
that a way dan
Phew
Thank goodness. Straily looked horrendous this inning.
15 pitch first inning, 52 pitch 2nd & 3rd.
Hells yeah Starily!
Kottaras has as many HR’s as Kurt.
That’s not a tall mountain to climb.
and more T’s and vowels, too.
Just thinking about college math made me break out in cold sweat. Once they added letters to the numbers I was so lost.
my goal is getting Greinke to 90 pitches this inning
My goal is to figure out what type of steak I want for dinner. I bought Ribeyes and KC Stips last night so it’s big decision to make.
Ribeye.
I’ll go see what Scalia thinks.
Reminds me of this post (which I read some years back) about AV-land.
now i’m hungry.
and i’m glad i can read between the lines in that article because the paragraphs i read are pretty funny.
I’m not much of a traveler, but that put Argentina on my short list of places to visit.
we’re planning a long vacation for next year and i keep doing cost comparisons like: flight to asia = flight to argentina + LOTS OF STEAK.
Awesome!
It’s meat Christmas today. I got lamb shoulder for $1.79/lb, and shark steaks for under $5.
I’m hoping he doesn’t make it out of this inning.
Weeks is not going to get those hits until he starts outting the ball over the outfielders heads
So he’s never going to get those hits?
yup.
Looking good Billy!
Swingles 2012: 219 PA, 77 wRC+, .294 wOBA, .260/.303/.373, 0 HR, 0 SB, .113 ISO, 0.7 WAR
Reddick 2012: 461 PA, 132 wRC+, .362 wOBA, .260/.333/.518, 25 HR, 9 SB, .258 ISO, 4.2 WAR
Red Sux fans must be so pissed about that trade.
IKR, who was our last 5 WAR player???
DB
No sh_t, huh.
third base!
If it doesn’t involve any pool diving it’s hard to see how he could be worse but I doubt he’ll ever play a big role again for any MLB team.
This millenium:
Thx, I look forward to 2013!
Giambi was a monster for several years there.
Barton.
Thanks, and go As.
but what about Bailey’s numbers
What numbers?!
60.
Four – the number of months he’s been on the DL.
How is the House of Glass pitching this year?
The Slapper’s power is going to come any day now because he hits dingers in batting practice.
wait till he grows into his swing
Wait until he grows into his work selling insurance.
So they traded a .260 hitter for a .260 hitter and got a closer too?!?
We’ve been robbed.
Heh!
Nice quick out!
FK you Slegna Pennington.
Nice comeback Starily.
Wierd, I just realized we’re only 2 crappy players away from a solid 1-9.
Here’s hoping Penny WAKES THE FK UP!
when was the last time Cespedes got a ball out of the infield?
heh, they are fun to watch though, he could be pretty sore still, wrists are bitch.
that’s what i’m guessing.
C’mon Coco we nee a 20 pitch inning here.
good lord.
please make this his last inning.
FK
Man Trout is almost to good to hate.
I’m having George Brett flashbacks, the guy killed the Brewers ( my hometown team) repeatedly, I couldn’t boo him…
too*
this kid is beastly… never seen a guy get out of the box this fast from the right side.
He’s a beast.
uh-oh.
F-U-K
did KK just say the pujols pitched 7 innings for the A’s last night???
Fucking guy is talented.
Babe Ruth is not impressed
He didn’t even bat an eyelash.
Can you imagine if someone as good as Ruth was around now? Also with his lifestyle? ESPN would start a channel just to follow him.
#TheDecision
Straily @ 100 pitches. :(
His HR/FB must be pretty bloated about now.
…
SHT. FK.
Dammit Straily. Stop with the homers.
Yeah, can’t say I’m impressed.
The zone is pretty flakey again admittedly.
Greinke was hurt by it but Straily’s fastball just sucks.
FK Pennington.
That is all.
Good thing I benched Straily this week….
No one cares about your fantasy team.
Good thing I picked up Morales though…
Ha!…this made me laugh.
C’mon Jordan lets do this!
i hate the 5 inning win stigma
RALLY CAPS!
in the 5th?
I went to 2 15 inning games last week!
then you oughta know to pace yourself!
There we go!
Way to run it out new guy.
Ugh.
Knee-shack!
Gotta be hard to read those pitches, very little consistency in his delivery.
KK is hella annoyed with the plate ump.
I have to think Miller’s not feeling quite right.
sounds like they’re changing plate umps.
Sounds like Miller’s going to come out very soon.
Sac down by 1 in the 6th? I hope he was actually bunting for a hit.
Yeah, not happy.
At least it worked.
coco!
Coco!
is there an echocho in here?
WOO COCO!!!!
There’s a COCO in o.CO COliseum.
In all seriousness I hope Bill Miller is just shaken up from the early pitch off the mask, but it looks like a concussion.
bet he’s thinking he should have put on the helmet lawrie so kindly handed to him.
Zing!
A double steal is a thing of beauty.
Particularly when it works out well.
And rewarded!
YES!
…pedes.
Cespedes! Great time to get it out of the infield!
YESPEDES!
That felt good.
UH HUH!
FK yeah!!!!
i love it when you emotionally stop counting how many outs you have to play with and start counting how many you need to get.
totally!
TROGDOR!!!
DRILLED!
Sounds like the Coliseum is a bit of a launching pad today.
it’s a bit warmer than usual today in the O.A.K.
BOOM CARTER!
carter! i love that little guy.
90 AB, 10 HR.
And the crazy part is, I had a feeling…
he’s proving to be worth the wait.
Was just going to post the same sentiment!
FK that shit I’ve been on the Carter, Taylor, and Barton bandwagons since DAY 1.
Thanks, and go As.
When we saw Carter in SAC pitchers seemed pretty scared of em’, seeing the same thing in the bigs this last few weeks.
sure. but 0-33 made it a little bit of a longer/doubt-ier journey from day 1 to today.
My heart has been all a flutter for Carter for years now. I’m so happy he’s showing signs of being what I thought I he could be.
This has been a wild game
Beautifully timed, Mr. Carter. May the spanking continue.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful. I love Carter so much.
just missed it before it went away. what did the gameday scouting report say just before carter hit that?
“Hawkins is about to cry.”
i think it was the opposite. hawkins showing dominance or something dumb like that. that’s why i want to laugh at it.
Nothing as good as the two Cobb ones I linked a week ago, I’m sure.
that was classic. there’s no depository for scout messages once they’re gone from the screen, is there?
Not that I know of, unless you save ’em yourself.
i can’t blame MLB for not preserving them. it has no other potential than constant ridicule.
I mean, it’s a neat feature that has some ability to enlighten. Just not all the way there yet.
definitely needs tweaking.
“Trogdor is about to FKing wreck shop.”
Thanks, and go As.
I think the biggest transformation as a fan for me in the second half is things seem possible now with 2 outs, pretty FKing magic!
We are now 10th in MLB for TATERS!
it’s like they got ore-ida to cater the clubhouse.
Let the record reflect that we haven’t had a team capable of winning a game like this in 5-8 years.
BAM!
I only like this game when the A’s are batting.
The ball is flyin out today. I don’t like the idea of Cook in the 9th.
Please gawd no.
but he’s rested, right?
I’d be okay w/ the 8th inning.
Build up the confidence again.
drink!
It’s funny, after the ASG, I wondered if Billy would consider trading Cook to get a SS or C. Even if he hadn’t fallen apart lately, I think it would’ve been worth it if he landed someone really good.
FK.
I’m bummed Sciosciariasis figured out that he should start Trumbo daily…
Only because Mathis can’t play that position.
Woo Carter!
this is crazy.
i’m calling you witchy (and not maybe).
♥.
just.plain.crazy.
This game is off the chain.
Jemile was froggy, heh.
a less enlightened blog would have called him buckwheat.
come on guys! 6 more outs. no sleeping yet.
Well it looks like Cookie for the 9th.
if we get that far with the lead
This is bad.
HUGE!
Light a candle quick Jesa!
on it. and…YES!
Light Pennington quick Jesa!
LOL
HUZZAH!
I have a 4 oclock meeting. Please hold on to this win for me. And for Neshek.
Do it for the goofy delivery!
our beautiful ballerina
Thanks, and go As.
whew.
What a turnaround for Doolittle!!!!!
Would love another 5 here.
Give Cook a little wiggle room.
Is anyone else infuriated by a 21-year-old kid, no matter how amazingly-skilled, with 4 months in MLB arguing every single strike call like he’s Jim Thome and has been playing in the majors for decades?
Yup, its pretty douche-y.
‘Smug’ doesn’t look good on anyone.
yuuuup.
I don’t know why his ass hasn’t been tossed. The umpires are being very indulgent.
They need to nip it in the bud early.
I think it has to be at least a bit of the “WOWHESSOGREATANDSOYOUNG!!11!oNE” thing.
oh boy
GIDP would be nice.
Bob, activate the bullpen please.
That was good – just get the sure out there.
oh no. 1-run game.
cook…
DO NOT WANT PIE TODAY KTHXBAI
Hey remember when Ryan Cook was good?
Thanks, and go As.
can we get FUUUU back?
As bad as Cook has been lately, please, no.
That has to be his last close for awhile, right?
He was never really that good. He was extremely fortunate with home runs and BABIP earlier this season and now he’s not. He’s had a mid 4 xFIP pretty much the entire season.
His peripherals are somewhat similar to Henry Rodriguez’s.
I haven’t been able to watch many games, but some of the early season games that I did watch featured some ridiculous stuff from Cook. He walked too many even for being unhittable, but having potentially unhittable stuff should count for something. I guess I’m saying that I still have hopes for Cook improving into a bullpen ace.
Not unlike the aforementioned Rodriguez!
True, but I just really like Cook’s slider!
this
Aside from that, I don’t think Cook is as good as he looked in the first half, but he can’t afford to keep being as bad as he is now.
NCJREBAIUVORNAVIOERNIUVANIURBEIS;BVIANDKNVJFBDRYLEIURINWNAEORNIVAER IHBV EIAH VAER U VANEIOGNOIENAIOF;N;IO;MWIOE
WTF
More candles stat!
Hook him Bob!!!!
I’m done with Cook as closer.
Neshek now, no more Cook implosions. He can barely get one guy out.
Agreed
CELEBRATE!
there it is!!!!
A’s rule, angels drool.
YAY!!! wow, that was stressful!!!
He got him even! UGH.
Did we win?
yes.
So we did. Seeing as Neshek is the winning pitcher, \m/ FTW.
When it’s all said and done, the A’s take 2 of 3 from the Angels.
Can’t say I would have predicted that a few days ago looking at a 1-2-3 of Weaver, Wilson, Greinke in this series.
And us with Milone(right?),and Straily. If we could line up Colon, McCarthy, and Parker I think I would feel better.
It was Parker, Colon, Straily for us in the series. I am excited to be getting McCarthy back soon though. And maybe even Anderson.
It was Parker…well I would have been ok with him as the third. But yeah-McCarthy and maybe Anderson just makes it all that much better.
doesnt feel great sfter that ninth…BUT FK YEAH
So the other “A” team understands the value of a good teAse too, eh?
Ugliest save I’ve seen in a while.
Upside is thinking how fugly H H must look about now!
Woooooo!!!!!!
In 29 games this year, Chris Carter has a HR in 10, a BB in 16 and a SO in 19. 4 multi-BB games, 7 multi-SO games.
He also already has 5 multi-hit games in 29 games this year. He had 4 in 39 games in 2010-11.
gggrrrr. when i go to MLB.com all gloaty like because my team just won an important game and all the other games are still in the 3rd or 4th, so i figure they just GOTTA have my interests in mind and perhaps on the front page too… i DON’T want to see a picture of a bunch of losers (angels) high-fiving from some play 5 innings ago (that was easily trumped by chris’ HR a little later anyway). they did NOT win. they do NOT get to be there. they can suck third place and MLB can too.
Yeah, what’s up w/ that…
Perhaps next year after we win the WS, MLB and ESPN will come around 1 out of 4 times at least. ;)
Tough loss for the **ngles, Today Was A Good Day!
ok, I’m back at work now.
I should have mentioned that Miller eventually came out of the game.
He probably had a concussion.
linky
(I was watching)
So… Pat Neshek owns an entire series of Garbage Pail Kids in gem mint condition.
Normal. Completely normal.
If you made MLB money, you would do the same.
I think Pat Neshek and I should be friends.
1. Suddenly streaking A’s!
2. Doolittle for closer? Doolittle for closer.
3. Chris Carter is special
4. Excited for McCarthy’s start on Friday. His health may decide whether this team makes the playoffs.
So, another boring routine win, huh?
Much like the rollercoasters on the boardwalk.
How was your trip?
Fun! The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (in the warm California sun!) has a nice old carny vibe to it which is lost at more modern amusement parks. And it was a spectacular day for driving Highway 1, which I love.
awesome. i’m a lil sad they started charging a park entrance rather than per ride. i used to live a few blocks away from the b-walk and it was fun going for just a ride or two. especially on wednesdays or whatever the cheap day used to be. except. never go on the zipper with a roommate who just ate mushrooms and then cotton candy because he WILL puke. and being trapped in a spinning cage with puke floating at zero G’s is… let’s just say it was a good thing we lived so close.
i think the zipper is gone now anyway.
There’s still no entry fee, as far as I know. I don’t see how they could ever change that.
That’s correct, no entry fee.
now i’m pissed. “luceeeee (or whatever her name is) you have some ‘splainin to doooo.”
Geez. If you don’t know your wife’s name, I think you’se the one who’s gotz some ‘splanin’ to do.
It’s in the freakin commercial that runs during A’s TV games: “The still admission-free Boardwalk!”
i’m always surprised by the actual content of those ads between innings. they shimmy. and i shimmy. they fly. and i fly. they’re out there having fun.
really?? my wife brought me the news about that last year after she went. is she THAT wrong (again!)??
I can imagine some guy standing out there getting “entrance fees” and walking away going “Heh. Suckers.”
While you’re buying this Boardwalk entrance fee, may I interest you in a phiten necklace?
i’m sorting the evidence out (mostly just looking at b-walk website ticket prices) and i think i can narrow it down to two versions of what happened. she went with nephews, sister, and rich aunt. rich aunt just bought the $30 day pass for everyone. then, 2 months later, when we were driving through town with my niece after looking at tide pools at bridges and on our way to taqueria vallarta, i said let’s go catch a quick ride to show the little one, and she was either confused by her previous time or just didn’t want to stop and lied to my face.
Boardwalk!
No pie, no interest
sometimes i hate you all for sleeping so early.
We could solve this problem by all sleeping together. Wait, um…
I feel better knowing I’m not the ONLY one around here suggesting casual orgies.
I went to bed at two! What else do you want from me? :)
I have prepared a list.
Thanks, and go As.
uh-huh. I’m sure it’s stuff like laundry, dusting, washing dishes. etc., right?
I think there are only two things on the list.
Oh good. I’m a busy girl.
Three. You list each twin separately.
1) Hookers
2) Blow
Something like that.
Thanks, and go As.
You work too much to do shit like that. Your man should do them for you if he works any less than 50 hours a week. If he does work that much, then hire somebody.
I think I love you.
I know I love you. I have many loves, but that doesn’t diminish any of them, at least not to me.
I love their carousel. Grab the brass ring!
And by this comment placement I of course mean the Santa Cruz Boardwalk’s carousel.
I prefer it out of context and therefore left up to the imagination.
