Coco Crisp turns around to bat right-handed 84

Ellis has apparently morphed into Mark Kotsay.

Game finally started in Flushing after ~1h rain delay. 0-0 top 2.

    I wonder if the A’s are still under the impression that Kurt is a good player.

        I think they just have to show other teams that Ellis is healthy. I would not be surprised if Ellis is gone within two weeks, which would be sad but probably the right thing to do. When that happens, I would think Carter would get his shot at first base…he’s hit very well since coming back from his thumb injury.

          I think at least the first half of that is right. On the second half, I worry about nBob’s CoJax crush

                Right. DDJ almost certainly projects to be the best OF on the team.

        Well, they’re certainly not under the impression that Ellis is a starter. I have no problem with them being under the impression that Ellis is a backup infielder anywhere on the infield other than SS, including first base.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Jun 22,2011 8:25 pm || Up

        Nah. Starting Ellis and sitting Weeks today would’ve triggered a media-blog shit storm. Doing it tomorrow, though, wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • dmoas Jun 22,2011 8:30 pm || Up

          Depends on how they did it. If they came out and said Weeks is the starter, Ellis the back up, blah blah blah like they did, but then said TODAY, we’re giving Weeks a rest day and he’ll be back in tomorrow and in Philly, I don’t think they’d shit themselves. But all of this is purely retrospect based on how off Weeks has looked today and nothing more, so maybe you’re right and it would have still looked wrong not knowing ahead of time that Weeks was going to suck today.

    • dmoas Jun 22,2011 9:17 pm || Up

      I wish more umps would call guys out on that shit. You should not be able to lean into it, drop your elbow into it or otherwise not make an effort to avoid being hit.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Jun 22,2011 9:31 pm || Up

        I can’t disagree much, but that’s a tough one for the umps. Home’s watching the pitch, not the batter…1B and 3B might have a better look, actually…and ump conferences to parse hitter intent after one of every 10 HBPs would be awkward.

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • dmoas Jun 22,2011 9:37 pm || Up

          Not so sure. Home’s watching the ball. Most hit-by-pitches aren’t close to the plate so seeing it head inside like that, you’re likely to notice what the hitter’s doing. If it’s a 100 mph pitch, well, there’s not much time to see it and I wouldn’t expect it to be reasonable for batter to avoid it if it hits them. An 80 mph breaking ball, more of an effort needs to happen besides turning your knee inward. At worse, you could call to the base ump a la a check swing and let them decide since they’re watching the batter anyway. I don’t think a conference would be necessary.

      • the dogfather Jun 22,2011 10:27 pm || Up

        iirc, ump called a White Sock on that play to end a game at the Collie, prolly 2005-6 or so.

        The meaning of life is not so much found, as it is Made. -- Opus
        • suspicious coin Jun 22,2011 11:36 pm || Up

          It was against the White Sox in 2005. The ejection of the batter (I think it was Crede) who got the HBP recalled forced Jermaine Dye to play shortstop, which is how I always remember that game. Guillen should have just activated himself to play short in the bottom of the ninth.

          A’s won on a walkoff by (who else) Marco Scutaro.

      • sslinger Jun 23,2011 10:33 am || Up

        Did you see the call the other night against Nyjer Morgan? He clearly turned away from it but the ump called him for leaning into it. Total bullshit, probably because it was Nyjer.

      Bullshit. He turned away from it. Didn’t try very hard but I don’t know if he could have gotten out of the way even if he had.

      • dmoas Jun 22,2011 9:38 pm || Up

        Really? The replay showed him turn into it. Had he simply stepped forward and stopped, no turn, it would have missed him. It was his last movement with his knee going inward that caused it to hit him.

      • Soaker Jun 22,2011 9:39 pm || Up

        I thought he turned away initially, then realized his opportunity and took full advantage.

        It’s 5+ hours after the scheduled start of the game, the HP umpire is exhausted and his tummy is growling…what the hell, make him make a rare call. I’m sure Billy Martin looked up from his labors, mopped his brow and gave Justin Turner a big thumbs-up.

        Looked to me like he turned and pulled his upper body away, while moving his leg/uniform into the path of the ball.
        I was very surprised NuBob didn’t go out and argue, just for appearances sake.

        Also pretty massive failure having Ziegler pitch
        a) to a bunch of lefties
        b) to anyone when his control is off.
