The Yankees are starting someone named Jordan Montgomery against the Rays. Not having any idea who that is, I am going to assume he’s bad.
Do we have any recent reports on Montas? How sharp can he possibly be?
Presumably that means Fiers on Friday, putting him on four days rest for the wild card game. Manaea on five days rest would also work fine.
Anderson and Roark to close out the season…I hope those games don’t matter.
I guess this also means that in the event of a three-way tie, Montas gets game 163, and Manaea gets game 164.
Lou’s sad sophomore season comes to an end with a fall in the shower.
CC looks really awful.
Jose Ramirez grand slams in his first AB off the DL. Poop.
Just a three-run homer in his second AB.
Yankees putting in a terrible pitcher in a tie game bottom of the sixth… wtf
I want to know how the Rays got Emilio Pagan to make guys like Judge and Stanton swing through belt high fastballs instead of hitting them 450 ft like hitters were doing last year.
I don’t think I could pick more than one of the men standing on the field in Angels uniforms out of a police lineup.
these might be exactly the names my brother and I made up to make out line ups for our backyard wiffleball games.
this game is gonna piss me off, huh?
Yeah, another pitcher who looks like he doesn’t have much idea where his pitches are going, but we can’t do anything with.
good news is he is only lasting 3 innings
The slegna always have a guy like Fletcher who the A’s can never retire.
Remind me again, why that turd Peralta was able to return to the Tigers postseason roster coming off a suspension in 2013, yet Montas is ineligible?
we didn’t know it was bad in 2013
I feel like I see Pagan, Roe, Poche, Drake, Castillo, etc pitching for the Rays everyday and yet they never seem to have any issues.
Right??
that’s because they are playing the defending world series champions with the best line up ever and the yankees who obviously hit more homers than anyone.
its the low quality opponents
OK Yankees. You’re into their bad relievers. You can score now.
Unfortunately, so are the Rays.
Choi walk off home run off Gearrin.
Naturally
If they play the Rays, there’s no doubt in my mind you have to start Manaea/Luzardo. It’s your best shot at neutralizing Meadows/Choi/the two Lowes/Kiermaier.
Chapman threw 90 pitches in the bullpen.
Khrush!
since melvin will not bench him, he may as well get hot
FFS yankees
This series really features a lot of guys with K names that should be C names.
what the fuck
I’m going to take all the bullshit that’s happened this inning, and the Rays and Indians apparent invincibility, as signs that we’re in for some coming heartbreak.
It’s the A’s. Even if they were smoking everything and the world was setting up for a grand time for us. We’d still be heading for heartbreak. Not quite the Cubs or Red Sox of the past, but still, it’s there.
I actually feel like it would e better for the wheels to rattle this week and have a strong next week. But then again that was my hope for 2014 so I will go ahead and shut up…
I mean, if you’re picking in and choosing, then yeah. Turn it on this weekend and never let up.
Hot take: proclaiming doom in advance doesn’t make the end any easier to take. In fact, it makes every day until then worse.
I’m not one to proclaim doom in advance, but I do find that I need to create a little emotional distance for myself in these situations by letting my brain experience a little bit of the worst case scenario in advance. Kind of an emotional vaccination.
Yeah, I get that approach, have been known to do that myself also. And obviously everyone’s mileage varies. For myself, I’ve concluded from years of experience that once the worst happens it turns out that the advance cynicism inoculation didn’t help at all.
i did this before nov 8 2016 and it helped. i mean, i remember how weird and dystopian the lighting was in bart on the 9th, but hey, i did get out of bed and get to bart.
for sports, i also pretend they won and it’s the day after and ask myself if i’m actually personally myself all that happy. usually i’m just, oh hey i can buy the jersey now.
get fooled on a change up and get a double.
I love how happy Profar always seems
how come A”s pop ups don’t fall in for doubles?
Wtf is this bullpen usage? Why can’t Luzardo pitch another?
I can’t deal with this shit right now.
This is pretty f’ing lame.
Good thing Olson convinced the HP umpire that a curveball 2 inches outside is a ball
They’re gonna reverse this.
Oh, I guess he did miss the bag.
Pathetic all around.
They look like they’re ready for a long offseason nap. The way things are going, they’ll get that sooner than later.
sigh
Going hard for that Tanner Roark vote.
I’m 49 years old and I barely remember that.

Wasn’t Zaidi supposed to be the smart one who was making Billy look good?
Is it possible that Geren was best man at Zaidi’s wedding too?
Guys, did it ever occur to you that the Beane pictures Geren has include Zaidi?
Is it asking too much for the Yanks to just try? Loaisiga(?) vs Morton.
And we get King Felix on Thursday. Can’t wait for him to turn back the clock in his last start and go 8 giving up 1 hit and 15 K’s.
1 PA since he replaced Herrmann on the roster.
The “Canadian pharmacy” spammer posted to the 2015 lounge again. In a “but who is it really??” the IP address traces to Kiev, Ukraine.
Ol’ Rudy, at it again.

i… do i want to hear what the original conversation where this term came up as he was asking for help?
wonder if he needed help taking a screenshot.
Way to crowd source Guli!
but its better practice to lead the comment with
HIVEMIND!! I have a problem, can any of you brilliant people come up with a good excuse as to why this text might aid in my defense? Because it looks like I have been shaking down a foreign goverment for months!
Yeah, I don’t see that helping his case at all. Sounds like they had been trying to get this done. Then couldn’t get it done. So they then sent the President in to make it happen. Then it happened. None of it impacts the Whistle Blower’s testimony.
He needs her help working his phone again.
wait. even in private they think that’s the truth there, on their side?
i had to come check if it was or wasn’t the same instagram-famous 20something assisting rudy.
it isn’t.

He’s catering directly to you now.
that may break me.
Of course
We sure he’s coming back?
he doesn’t need to. you can record these things on skype if you wanna.
wait. counterthought.
he can be the only one that *doesn’t* need skype to co-host with snowden.
the whistleblower and the blowhard. whistleblowing past the rude-yard. the fucked one and the snowman. just spitballing some names here.
I say we trade him straight up for Snowden.
Usually around this time of day im watching the clock for how soon I can leave work. Now I’m watching for how soon relevant games start.
That’ll get this dormant offense going!
Especially weird after KD provided our only offense last night.
“The flu” for Khris, or, a successful attack by Florida gamblers.
Eric Chavez nods knowingly.
Bad Bob’s Big Boy.
The folks who brought you Pagan the closer, now introduce Joey Wendle the slugger.
Greetings from the the OC. It is apparently cheerleader night at the big slAg. Ive seen about 5 different ones all with different outfits.
Thanks for repping the Oaktown flag. Pop some beach balls if you can.
The Yankees would probably be ok not catching Houston for the top AL seed, thus playing Minnesota rather than the wild card victor.
Eduardo Perez just said exactly that, go ahead and punt best overall record to the Astros and hope the wild card knocks them off in a 5-game series.
Playoffs should be set so the top seed can choose things like that. Its usually less important in baseball, but like basketball ylu should get a chance to match up against who you want to start.
Yep. In fact, the top seed should be able to choose whomever they want, including the Yankees in MLB’s case, for the first round. Then the next highest ranked unchosen team gets HFA. In football, it would be far more interesting since the wild card teams could be better teams than the division winners.
ChiSox up 3-0 on Cleveburg largely on the strength of a comically bad throw by Carlos Santana on what should’ve been an easy out at the plate.
Looking at the ticketing site, after a day of WC single-game sales available to all, it looks like 1st and 2nd decks and the outfield 100 and 200 levels are sold out except for a few singles, as is the 3rd deck between the bases. Upper Mt. Davis not being offered; presumably if the A’s do clinch home field for the WC whatever’s left in the 3rd deck would go pretty fast though.
If it happens a home wild card game will be raucous good fun. They said they’d make Mt Davis available for all postseason games as needed.
It looks like 5-1 for the Rays vs. the Sox and Yanks. Should note that the A’s went 6-1 at home vs. those two.
It’s really on-brand for the Angels to have a giant “45” in the middle of their field.
Cashing in some early opportunities would help my disposition a lot. Heaney should give us more of them.
We really don’t need another game that pisses ed off.
I will not complain about any early-inning blowout wins the rest of the season.
Bad swings and LOB make Ed something something.
0-6 with RISP after two innings.
sigh
Montas threw some nice pitches that inning.
And a really bad one in the 2nd.
Single and two walks for teh CLevelands.
Bases loaded 2 outs 8-3 chicago
4
Let’s have the A’s score 6 to celebrate
OK boys let’s remember how much these Angels pitchers suck.
Ramon remembers.
Was that the Earth moving? No…its RAMON!
Let’s score 5 runs now and win this fucking game.
And hell, if RISP is the problem I’d accept five solo jacks.
frustration…rising
Profar now playing beltless
top of the order. here we go
A Semien would be nice.
I will settle for a Matt, C or O.
Montas vs. Bailey for Game 163 in Oakland on Monday would be an interesting choice.
Before you could get to a Game 163, you would have a Game 162 that is either win-to-stay-alive or win-and-you’re-in. I bet Bailey would get used over Roark in that one.
Mariners about to get no hit again.
Someone help Ramon win this game please.
hit the ball hard, make an out
Safe
What a ridiculously terrible call by the umpire. I didn’t need replay to see that one.
Clearly safe, but dang helluva parkour move by Simmons
Stop with the pitching changes, Scioscia.
Seriously.
steal!
Scioscia clearly pissed about the Giants pitching record…
8 1/3 and it gone.
Considering his history with social anxiety, I can feel his pain on the hassle of that one.
Very relatable
Absolutely. It’s impressive how well he’s done all things considered.
JFC
for fucks sake
Just not acceptable.
They said Canha is walking gingerly … doesn’t he do everything gingerly?
What the hell?
It isnt ginger, its the pumpkin he’s turning back into.
Great.
Looked fair to me.
I thought it was foul watching live. Haven’t seen the high-home camera replay yet.
Canha’s GIDP/error-injury inning was the bizarro version of Ramon’s throw/homer inning earlier.
OK Ray, sure Canha probably shouldn’t have tried to make that throw after he had already hurt himself, but maybe let it go.
I find Ray to be rambling on more late in the season, compelled to fill air, often not contiguously.
this is so dumb
Come on Jurkstore, you gotta get a bat on something there. 3 straight fastballs in the zone.
This is hard to watch.
The A’s would still technically lead the wild card race with a loss tonight because of the tiebreaker vs. Tampa Bay…but controlling that requires a 4-game sweep in Seattle and that’s becoming hard to imagine.
Top of the lineup, let’s go fellows.
Bunting him into scoring position is a sure path to success.
“Textbook”
Matty C!
MVPs
Don’t know about bunting there; very lucky that bunt worked at all
It looked to me like Ramon was only showing bunt with the intent of taking the first pitch, and Robles Drysdale’d him with a great pitch. Certainly not a situation where Bob would have called for a sac bunt.
{rescinds comment on how Chappy just can’t have the September he’s been having}
Yeah, I was reserving a time at the funeral home for his bat.
A Barreto hit, the rarest of birds
Perhaps inspired by the venue, Bob’s using the whole roster tonight.
Can we just offer a final fuck you to the Angels for starting a getaway day at night without a day off the last fucking week of the season. MLB and the Union needs to fix that nonsense.
It is total bullshit.
Exactly! Some of us have to drive home..oh, and the players too I guess.
The Mariners, who play getaway midweek games in the daytime more often than not, and far more often than the Angels, did the same thing to the Astros tonight. In the final week of the season that would be because television looks at the schedule in December and wants the game at night in case it’s meaningful. With the Mariners where they are in the standings it looks dumb, and it didn’t do anything to help their attendance which was under 11K tonight.
It’s not about ratings. It’s about what’s fair to the traveling team at a specific time in the season. I get the logic they’re using, I just don’t think it matters. And at this point the season, if it matters, it’ll get the attention it needs.
2:34 a.m. landing in Seattle. They’re back on Cuban’s plane as of the last road trip.
One silver lining to the night game is that the game ended at 10:40 and the plane took off from Long Beach at 12:25. It’s 20 miles from the stadium to the airport. With a 1 p.m. game of the same length, it concludes at 4:40 p.m. and if that plane takes off an hour and 45 minutes later, it’s empty because the bus has only made it a couple miles from the stadium.
That dugout celebration after the homer suggested that the boys had some tension building up. A lot of butts seemed to unclench a little there.
I know mine did.
Mine won’t likely unclench until the off season. Possibly longer than that.
I plan to be thoroughly unclenched at the parade.
Stay away from the Victory Nachos, please.
Ray/Glen seemed to be in agreement that it was the biggest hit of the year. Haven’t checked the WPA charts, but it certainly felt like it given the context.
I’m really concerned about the Canha injury…
KK called it the seminal moment in the season or something like that
Did not see it, but leg or back at this point is no good. Hopefully they can hobble through seattle for the next 4 and let him rest
I watched the play and still have no idea what the injury was or how it was done.
“Left groin strain”
My TV diagnosis is that either 3-4 days of rest will get him back to 90%, or he’s done.
I saw that Piscotty took BP today. Or we could see Jurkstore in a postseason outfield.
I just had a nightmare of Dustin Fowler getting added to the roster. I will now go hide under my pillow.
If the A’s make it to the ALCS there’s certain to be a D’Angelo Jimenez and a Mark Kiger on the roster. Wait till you see what the catching looks like when both Murphy and Phegley get hurt in the Division Series.
Pinder and Jurk store rotating between 2B and C.
Actually can’t use Profar-he wouldnt be able to get the ball back to the pitcher.
Just tell him to throw it to 2nd base.
Just give him a Playboy. For the articles.
Non-sports sites from google are saying three weeks on low end for a groin strain. Trout was out from April 9 to 15 this year. Scooter Gennett missed three months.
Probably depends on if he just felt a little something or whether it was a real pull. Both would get him out of the game. One will put him out for the season. Obviously his balls are about to fall off.
He told SuSlu he will be back by Friday. I assume that means to go ahead and send flowers.
He didn’t actually seem to be limping. So it could just have been a tug. Possibly something he felt earlier too running the bases making it more necessary to be precautionary. So, I figure the funeral will be Monday on their day off.
Interesting that Bob moved Pinder to center over Laureano (which could have been costly – no way that runner tags up from second in the seventh with Laureano out there). Maybe it’s just being very careful with Laureano’s legs, but I have been wondering whether right field will be Ramon’s forever home.
Really caught my attention. Yeah, I think they are putting him there. He said he was used to it.
A centerfielder would be nice this winter.
I figured it was still about his legs.
Laureano’s arm is valuable in either position, and he has had some struggles in CF, but it’s not like Pinder and Canha are naturals there either.
I think what we’ve learned this year is (1) Laureano has some work to do on his fundamentals in center, and (2) his bat easily plays in a corner. He’s the centerfielder on Opening Day 2020, but I can imagine a semi-permanent move to right before too long if he doesn’t tighten it up out there.
58% wWPA for Chapman’s homer last night. The two higher ones I found this year, obviously not in the final week of the season:
1. 6/20: A’s down 4-2 to Rays with 2 out in bottom of 9th, Chapman hits walk-off 3-run homer. 85%. Video
2. 7/20: A’s down 4-3 to Twins with 2 out in top of 9th, Khris hits 2-run single. 59%. Video
Olson’s 3-R HR to take it from 0-2 to 3-2 in Houston was also 58%.
Via effectively wild.
second most positive change in probability that the team will win the world series.
3
Phew
This will make for a much more pleasant flight to Seattle.
If I ever go back to the Big slAg (not sure I will) I promise to not post, seeing as how everything got better once I stopped.
So…spelling it out for my own benefit (let me know if I miscalculated anything)
A’s win 3 of 4 – guaranteed WC1 with home field because of tie breaker rules even if Rays win out
A’s win 2 of 4 – Rays need to lose 1 of 3 for A’s to be WC1, but 3 way tie scenario in play if Cleveland wins out. A’s guaranteed at least a play in game for WC2 with Cleveland if Cleveland/Rays both win out.
A’s win 1 of 4 – WC1 is out unless Rays lose 2 of 3 and Cleveland loses 2 of 4. 3 way tie scenario triggered if Cleveland wins 3 of 4 here. A’s are out altogether if Rays only lose 1 of 3 and Cleveland wins out.
A’s win 0 – well…
Ideal scenario at this point:
A’s win 3 of 4 taking care of business. Rays and Cleveland tie on the last day (Rays have to lose at least 1). Rays burn Morton against Cleveland in the play in game – Cleveland burns Clevinger in game 162 and Bieber in 163, but somehow win 163. A’s face Cleveland at home against Plutko, Plesac, or Civale.
preferably win the first three.
Maybe throw in a couple of rainouts in D.C. this weekend for good measure.
From…Las Vegas?
He was playing craps.
Mike Minor had an efficient top of the 8th today.
Thanks, and go As.
This is lame by Woodward.
Cora thinks they have been playing the right way? Le sigh…
I find it hard to believe the Red Sox batters were intentionally trying to keep Mike Minor from a stat they probably had no idea about, rather than just playing shitty baseball like they have for months.
Agreed. Theu havent pmayed the right way since maybe the ASB.
I guess Piscotty and Canha are both somehow available tonight.
Apparently Canha running around in warmups and feeling good, he says.
Back to back homers off of Civale and it’s 4-0 Chisox.
Dear Berkeley schools can’t back to school night walt until November? Now I’m gonna have to sneak peaks at gabe on phone and hope the teachers don’t catch me
Last year we had it during the wild card game. Which was actually OK, now that I think about it.
So BoMel will end up putting in the rusty Piscotty at some critical AB, wont he?
Ummm…
uploaded?
