The Highly Suggestible Type 186

Now that we aren’t playing Houston the future seems bright again. A deep playoff run and many big contract acquisitions are surely imminent.

Anderson
Mengden
Homer
Fiers

vs the Galloless Rangers who are 1-5 on their current road trip.

      • lenscrafters Jul 26,2019 8:45 pm || Up

The slow mo angle I saw was that the ball was in Hermann’s glove the entire time and the tag was before he hit the plate. Regardless, given the game situation there of it having the potential of being the third out with no runs scored, you have to challenge the play even if you’re just 50% sure it gets overturned. It’s unlikely there’s a higher impact time to save the challenge for.

That play was enraging because it had 4 different point of failures: Profar oleing the ball, Ramon not picking it up cleanly, Semien’s abysmal throw home, and the managerial failure of not challenging. Choo should’ve never been close to scoring.

I thought it was 100% that the tag came before his foot hit home plate, and at least from the angles we had it did not look like the ball hit the ground. Only thing I can figure is that they might say, NFL style, that he was not in full control of the ball when he was making the tag.

          Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs agrees:

In fact, Diekman is throwing harder now than he has since 2015, the year he was included in the Cole Hamels trade from Philly to Texas. His fastball is averaging 95.7 mph, which puts it among the hardest left-handed fastballs in big league bullpens, ranking fifth among lefty relievers with at least 20 innings pitched this year (only Felipe Vazquez, Aroldis Chapman, Jose Alvarado, and A.J. Minter throw harder). And Diekman’s stuff is especially tough on lefties because his cross-bodied, low-slot delivery creates such a unique angle on his pitches. So bizarre is Diekman’s release point that it barely fits on our scatterplot grid. He’s built to get lefties out…

Kansas City didn’t get much back, though, and opposing teams I’ve spoken to about this deal think the Royals could have done better by waiting for needy contenders to sweat it out for a few days and offer more.

Nice hot day, day game after a night game, Fiers on the hill, what could go wrong?

So, here’s the thing: You know how after something bad happens on a baseball field, the players all say: “Well, you have to have a short memory.”

    Yeah, so much for that.

Woodward maintained there was no intent to hit Laureano, not with the Rangers down by a run in the eighth. He said he sent Rangel out to the mound to ask Montero to speed up his delivery out of fear that Canha would be running. Montero echoed that message.

“My sinker is always tight,” he said through an interpreter. “It was tight and inside. I was not trying to hit him.”

OK, so that was the unfortunate drama to a night that began with a local Make-A-Wish kid getting the “first hit” of the game and ended with fireworks celebrating family-friendly animator Pixar Films.

But in between, there were scores to settle.

Are they settled now? Or will the teams carry it over into Sunday’s series finale?

“You never know,” Woodward said. “But you hope there’s no carryover.”

Guess it all depends on how long those memories are.

Sounds like the Mets gave up two middling pitching prospects for Stroman (under control for 2020) and got some cash from the Blue Jays in the deal. I wouldn’t mind a deal like that.

Except that our middling pitching prospects are currently in the rotation.

Between Stroman and Syndergard mostly I like the Fuck the Yankees approach the Mets are taking.

I don’t think we really have the kind of pitching prospects the Mets gave up here. Puk and Luzardo are too good, and the rest are either low ceiling (Dunshee, Howard) or have haven’t pitched much professionally due to injuries. (Kaprielian, Jeffries, Holmes).

Apparently it’s Pinder. Also per Slusser:

With the issues the A’s have had at second base, where Jurickson Profar has struggled offensively and defensively much of the way and where Franklin Barreto has failed to gain the everyday job after hitting .114, might Pinder be an option? Several scouts have suggested Pinder could be a fit there, and earlier in the season, when it looked as if the A’s potentially would be sellers, some teams were eying Pinder as a potential trade target for his versatility. “I’d take him right now,” one scout said.
