I don’t care for Bailey’s pitching, but I dig his demeanor
More d’oh than whoo hoo tonight.
I’m thinking more of Sarge screaming at Beetle.
better get hendriks up
SchlitterExp pretty much at 100%.
I like the idea of icing cole
OK let’s see how bad this can get.
That horrifying 22-9 loss at Yankee Stadium a couple months into the Melvin Era is the worst. 18 is the highest since then.
The 10 highest since 2000:
22 – referred to above
18 – 3 times
17 – 2 times, including Wild Alcoholic Dreams
16 – 4 times
So the A’s have given up at least 16 10 times in just about 20 full seasons, which is over 3000 games.
The Orioles gave up at least 16 4 times in their final 54 games in 2018, and have done it 4 times in 99 games this season, so 8 in their last 153 games.
Now 9 times in the last 170 games for the Orioles. Aaron Brooks contributes to the cause tonight with a 3 IP, 9 H including 4 HR, 9 R start against the Astros.
The pitchers in that game (runs allowed):
Rich Harden (6)
Craig Breslow (1)
Fautino de los Santos (3)
Jordan Norberto (4)
Bruce Billings (7)
Brian Fuentes (1)
Amazingly, the A’s led that game 7-1 at one point.
norberto was good then got suspended?
Didnt he get hurt before suspension? I think he was the one who pitched to like 2-3 batters throwing like 70, got them out and had to get pulled from the game.
That looks like the story. The A’s DFA’d him after he had supposedly recovered from an elbow injury, but he had TJ surgery shortly thereafter; don’t know what happened with his grievance. While he was recovering from the TJ he got a 50-game suspension related to the Biogenesis thing in Miami. He briefly pitched in the Rays’ minor league system and then in Japan for a while.
Edit: I guess he hasn’t given up.
does the ACA cover tommy john?
Notice how Andrews is giving the perfunctory thumbs up but his facial expression says, “This one is toast.”
Why is this AAA trash even on the roster? Pretty ridiculous that Wendelken was sent down instead of this guy.
Derek Holland is cheap and available.
Ditto Matt Harvey.
The usual thing is a guy like Schlitter throwing 80 pitches and then getting sent down. He would have to be DFA’d to get him off the 25-man roster. I doubt there would be too much trouble with getting him through waivers though.
I was just thinking, it must suck to know that if a starter gets shelled and you come in, you are losing your $20,000 paycheck
If that was overturned, we should boycott baseball
On this road trip Fosse has seemed even more vacuous than usual.
6 more merciful outs please
would anyone miss the bottom of the 8th?
related, how many ABs did babe ruth miss out on because he was on a team that won a lot?
RIP
To all fields indeed.
Inspiring start.
It’s not getting any better.
We need to find the Ron Washington for centerfielders. Kotsay? Coco?
Argh.
Man they didn’t give Fiers a lot of rest time between innings
Not that time neither
Perfect game definitely in play here.
miley was not to pitcher I worried about
I’ll consider it a win if the A’s get 6 hits this series. I will accept 5
Success!
Laureano lawndart
Eat shit Osuna
Miley may not have had anything left, but Olson had to feel pretty good about Hinch pulling the lefty for him.
I’m expecting this bottom of the ninth to be an adventure.
This would be a good time for a classic Reddick GIDP helmet slam.
Forgot he’s Mr. Clutch now.
Shit, neither of those balls was even hit that well.
Soria is trash.
Treinen or Trivino for the 10th?
Nope. But at least one of them is going to have to perform if we’re going to win this game.
Wrong again!
Has Bob realized that Phegley has gone back to being unplayable against RHP?
You know, the more of these performances Fiers piles up, the sillier it seems that he didn’t start the wild card game.
Ok now I vote Petit for 2 inning setup man every day.
I fking love Ramon
WTF?
I hate this park so much.
this is so dumb
That ball wasn’t stuck. It just stopped rolling.
Exactly.
What the ever loving fuck?
Ah yes replay and arcane baseball rules fucking the A’s over.
Unless there is some specific Houston ground rule that calls that a dead ball that is incredible bullshit. That kind of odd padding stick happens all the time.
The definition of “sticking” is pretty generous, and that’s usually the way I’ve seen it called.
I have never seen it applied this way that I can remember
There was clearly air between the ball and the scoreboard, and Reddick had no trouble picking up the ball. It’s a ridiculous interpretation.
Agreed. I’ll guess I’ve seen that kind of ball/wall play 40 or 50 times in my life and not once have I seen it called a ground rule double.
Yup it’s such bullshit.
Not always
funny, because had it on at bat here, the kid likes to give me play by play, then he said, “what, is cespedes the umpire?”
two bases from where?
At least I got to use horseshit today.
Thanks Yusmeiro.
justice served.
ball don’t lie
Nice win, fellows!
Wow, Olsen was 0 for 17 against Houston this year until the homer.
you clearly were not listening to vince
I’m realizing that the Twins bullpen has a Taylor, a Tyler, a Trevor, a Kohl, a Ryne, and a Blake in it. That is some serious whiteness.
Bring him up
my twitter: THIS SCHIFF GETTING REAL!!!
clerk at the liquor store with cspan feed on TV where they usually have NFL drafts and such on instead: i just can’t believe they’re still wasting money on this. how long are they going to keep it going and going?
yeah. one of these worlds is not penetrating the other.
If they had the right scouting report on Bassitt the roof would be open anyway.
Since June 18 (his last HR) Khris had exactly 100 PA coming into today.
.189/.270/.211.
Not only no homers, but only 2 doubles in that stretch.
24% K rate in that stretch is normal (or if anything a bit low) for him.
9% BB rate is also normal.
Even taking into account that he was hurt for part of that time, wouldn’t you expect him to guess right and hit a ball hard more often than that?
I don’t see a way to narrow down the dates (maybe from someplace other than Fangraphs?) but I suspect almost none of the red dots on the right side have come since he hurt the ribs early on.
Source: FanGraphs
Looking only at the full season numbers on Fangraphs (because I don’t know how to break them down by date), it looks like the culprit may just be that he isn’t hitting the ball in the air. Hit hard hit rate is above his career numbers, but his fly ball rate is way down.
Bassitt’s lack of quality secondary offerings on full display this inning. It’s why he’s so poor against hitters with two strikes and after his first time through the order.
Surely he and the A’s realize this. Why not teach him a cutter?
I’m trying to figure out what happened with the Red Sox playing under protest today, and all can gather is that the Rays did some Rays shit and Angel Hernandez was involved.
https://www.mlb.com/news/red-sox-protest-loss-to-rays-over-substitutions
So Kolarek comes in as a reliever in the top of the 8th.
Kolarek pitches to one batter.
Then Roe comes in, and they move Kolarek to 1B. This means they also lose the DH.
So one of Kolarek/Roe is now batting 3rd, where DH had been, and the other is batting 9th, where 1B had been (after some earlier moves).
Roe pitches to one batter.
Then Nate Lowe comes in for Roe, to play 1B, and Kolarek moves back to pitcher (and gets the final out).
In the bottom of the inning, that 3rd spot is due up. Willie Adames PH for Kolarek.
So it seems like the question is which of Kolarek and Roe should originally have been in the 3rd spot and which in the 9th spot.
Adames struck out anyway, which Lowe (or for that matter either of the pitchers) could also just as well have done, but I guess that doesn’t affect the merits of the protest.
If they happened at the same time, I’d imagine that the Rays could put whomever they wanted in either spot. So I’d hope they weren’t trying to protest that. At which point, it’s a matter of what was discussed with Ump taking precedence of whatever poor communication came anywhere else.
I guess that’s where our friend Angel comes in.
No doubt Angel screwed up the communication somehow, but thinking about this more, I think the choice of which player ends up in which spot is not arbitrary, and they actually got it right:
Kolarek and Choi (who had been at 1B) were on the field at the same time. So it wouldn’t make sense for Kolarek to eventually end up in Choi’s spot in the batting order. He was logically already in the 3rd slot, just with someone else DH’ing for him. Then when Roe comes in, he replaces Choi in the lineup, while Kolarek, instead of the DH, is now required to bat in the 3rd slot.
From reading about it, Angel shat the bed on that. He didn’t request Cash to specify who was where in the line up and didn’t force the DH to be removed when the pitcher moved to first. So he basically made an unnecessary mess of things. I don’t think the protest should merit anything except maybe Angel being fired. But that’s only because Angel should be fired regardless.
The problem is the DH doesn’t get vacated until the simultaneous moves are made so I don’t necessarily think the new pitcher is the one that has to go into the DH spot. He would if he were the only act being made on the line up, but it’s not much different than a double switch or multiple replacements being added at the same time. Since both the DH and first baseman leave at the same time, you can insert the pitcher in the first base slot and the new first baseman in the DH slot or vice versa.
Vince with the amazing fact that Profar hasn’t been caught stealing since April 2017.
They’re approaching the trade deadline with the same needs they had at the beginning of the offseason: 2 quality starters, a backend reliever, 2B, C, and LF.
A long list to try to fill right now when the realistic upside this season is the wild card game and the likely solution would be overpaying for band-aids like Rodney and Familia.
Was just looking at Cot’s and didn’t realize the Mets spent as much as they did to bring Familia back. Ouch.
given the wild card is the only realistic playoff goal, I don’t see any reason to spend too much on any of these things.
I think standard reliever upgrade to be attainable, but I don’t see a quality starter or catcher being in the cards. Don’t know what was wrong with maldenado before the season started.
I think they will rely on on the same things they were hoping for coming in-the pitchers coming back will fill those gaps, Murphy maybe shows up and makes a splash, and the 2B and LF dreck will survive. And dont give up any “good assets” that would help in 2020.
I’d guess they assumed WC was a stretch and their peak so they didn’t prioritize fixing things they felt they’d have on the roster next season. Which is kind of dumb, but it’s not quite as bad as being played out. But from the looks of it, the starter issue I think you overpay in trade or FA, so much so that they shrugged at it.
I think you have to do something just to reward the good players for having the team in it, keep morale up and such by upgrading the schlittiest roster spots. But no reason to give up any good prospects unless you are getting someone under control for another couple of years.
Slusser is on the twitter saying don’t count the A’s out for Syndegaard, so who knows.
is he in the walk year?
Two more arb years after this one.
sounds expensive
lol bullshit.
Thanks, and go As.
And I’d add that after this road trip, while the A’s are clearly serious WC contenders, it’s very hard to imagine any scenario where the get past Houston or NYY in the playoffs.
What they really need is another offseason of massively underwhelming low end free agent additions.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s good to set achievable goals.
Would you trade Luzardo Mateo and Dunshee for Syndergaard?
I would need a secondary piece (Diaz) as I’m not convinced on Syndergaard’s health and performance this year.
that would be awfully light for Syndergaard and Diaz no?
Watching the deficiencies of this team get reaffirmed by today’s game has turned me against blowing up the farm for a trade like this.
I mean the injury risk on Luzardo makes me want to trade him
rather than Puk who is barely 2 years younger than Thor?
Thanks, and go As.
Puk doesn’t have the injury history of Luzardo
Like tears in rain.
Hundley D’dFA.
T. Anderson sent back down (with B. Anderson presumably to come off paternity list).
Need a third catcher for the suspended game. Grossman has already pinch-hit for Phegley and Hundley is now in the lineup.
So right now 39 on the 40-man roster, and they could also call up Triggs and put him on the 60-day IL to create a second opening.
Shouldn’t be a problem with the 28-man active roster. Ideally, Murphy has a healthy August and spends September getting comfy in the big leagues (no reason not to put him on the 40-man to let him get ready for 2020). If not, Beau Taylor.
Oh sure, they will have two available catchers in that game, Herrmann and whoever the Sept. 1 addition is. Murphy’s season has been such a lost one, I’d think he would be more likely to go to AZ Fall League after the Aviators are done.
isn’t hermann the go to
Hi yes one Puig, please
Thanks, and go As.
I saw the article and thought the conclusion was odd; not sure where “adding a right-handed hitting outfielder” ranks on the list right now, but not high.
Maybe if we found out KD is still injured and Piscotty’s knee isn’t recovering as quickly as hoped. Otherwise, it’s hard to see it.
Qualified immunity doctrine is a scourge.
Judge Berzon’s dissent is good. It would be nice if, say, Justice Gorsuch were to read it and see an opportunity to do some good in the world.
Good luck with that.
I’m obviously not expecting that to happen, but if there is ever a fact pattern that could lead a conservative with a supposed libertarian bent to rein in qualified immunity a bit, it’s the one where the cops rendered an innocent woman’s house unlivable trying to smoke out a fugitive who wasn’t there and said that was ok because she gave them permission to go inside under threat of arrest.
Remember when being conservative was generally understood to include reining in the state to the minimum level? Feels like a totally different universe now.
remember when running the country implied at least a modicum of proficiency?
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/25/us/politics/presidential-seal-trump.html
Ninth Circuit again: Qualified Immunity affirmed for Fresno cops who straight up stole $100,000 in cash and $125,000 in rare coins during a search because the homeowner “did not have a clearly established Fourth or Fourteenth Amendment right to be free from the theft of property seized pursuant to a warrant.”
What the fuck does that even mean?
It means you can’t sue the cops, and by extension the city, for stealing your shit while they execute a warrant on your property because it wasn’t “clearly established” that stealing your shit while executing a warrant violates your constitutional rights.
Basically, qualified immunity lets the cops get cases dismissed with a George Costanza “was that wrong? should I not have done that?” defense unless there was, at the time they screwed you, a circuit court case in that circuit or a Supreme Court case clearly saying that their obviously bad conduct (the panel here takes pains to say the cops’ actions were “morally reprehensible”) violated the fourth amendment. And most of the time, that magic case won’t exist because the issue never gets that far.
I got that part. That’s basically an unnecessarily, overly complicated way of saying they’re allowed to violate your rights and literally break the law by stealing from you because “reasons.” Which begs the question “What the fuck does that even mean?” Sigh.
but liberal san francisco
Sigh…
Tough to tell for sure from pictures, but the Heritage Night t-shirts this year look way, way better than usual. The Jewish night Kenny Holtzman shirsey might be a must-have.
