The white Sox players seem to think they are playing the American Football. 79, 74, 33, 46, etc.

Anyway, Matt Chapman is aces at all but the shoe game. Sir, Gold is an accent, not a primary color.

    Profar at 2B. Barreto failed to clear the low better-than-Profar bar in his week or two, but I would still like him to get a longer look.

        Profar has hit much better from the right side (.344 wOBA vs. .254 from the left), but 10 of his 11 homers are from the left side.

    The role of Aaron Brooks will be played today by Blake Treinen.

  9. lenscrafters Jul 13,2019 3:55 pm

    If the A’s could trade Treinen for a rental reliever or starter (Will Smith, Wheeler, etc), should they do it? So essentially 1.5 years of Treinen for someone who could help for sure now.

    I’m losing confidence that Treinen is going to figure it out and be a contributor for this year.

    • Soaker Jul 13,2019 4:46 pm || Up

      I like Treinen as a lottery ticket for a World Series run in 2020. Trading that for a shot at the wild card game this year…nah, we’ve been there twice in the last five years and it’s not very satisfying. For this year I’m happy taking my chances on whatever upside Manaea, Cotton, Puk and Luzardo may provide in August and September.

      I want to believe that they can make a run at the Astros this year but the pitching feels like such a house of cards. Petit and Hendriks are the only two relievers Bob feels are reliable right now, and how long can that last.

      He’s pretty bad, but if they don’t think Manaea is ready to pitch in the big leagues when his rehab period is up, that’s somebody who could pick up a few extra starts while Manaea is optioned until, say, September 1. Not sure how the mechanics allow tennis players to serve so much more than pitchers can pitch but it is pretty remarkable – there were 422 total point, 263 first serves in so that means 581 total serves, not counting lets resulting in additional serves. So that’s probably more than 300 serves each. Not to mention that they are then using the same arm for the ground strokes in a 5-hour battle. Amazing physical performances.

          I’d trade Barreto for MadBum but wouldn’t deal Mateo. Barreto has had enough chance that the risks of giving up a future star seem low enough compared to the boost to our Potemkin’s rotation. I say go for it.

          • andeux Jul 15,2019 3:32 pm || Up

            Barreto seems like he’s been around forever (4 1/2 years in the organization, and 2 years since his A’s debut), but he’s still only 23. There is still a lot of upside there, and even if he never becomes a true star, there’s still a lot of potential value in being a cheap, average player for another 5 years. It would be a huge mistake to trade him for a rental IMO.
            Mateo is 9 months older, and though he hasn’t made it to the majors at all is already on his third option year. Given that there is no spot on the roster for him now, it actually might make sense to trade him, even for not very much, given that the alternative is likely to be trading him for even less or losing him on waivers next spring. (I’d still rather trade Profar, of course, but not sure that the Giants would want him.)

              Yeah if Farhan agrees to a Profar deal he’s clearly been body snatched (cue Donald Sutherland gif).

              Barreto just feels too me like a guy who’s current trade value might exceed his future actual value. I’m ok with selling high. But yeah, just two months of return would be risky AF.

                See, I’m the opposite of some of you. I have no faith at all in Mateo. He strikes me as the toolsy guy some prospect mavens refuse to let go when his holes in his swing and his lack of plate discipline prevent him from producing. And I don’t trust Vegas at all, so his production this year offers me no solace.

                At least with Barreto he’s had a bunch of times proving one particular tool. Walking a bunch, hitting .300, crazy power. A bit like Donaldson that way where if he figures out how to do them all at once he’s a star, but if he stitches together all the bad times, he looks horrendous.

                If Mateo alone (or even Mateo & Neuse & Fowler) could get Bumgarner and Will Smith, I would do it today. Not only does it greatly improve the 2019 team, I’d add bonus points for it the same reason the Giants would never do it: the casual fan. I think in market, trading MadBum to Oakland is a non-starter. It gives the impression the Giants are below the A’s and puts it on the frontpage to the non-baseball fan. That won’t happen without postseason A’s success or some major splash. And the Giants play that PR game way better than the A’s.

                • lenscrafters Jul 16,2019 10:56 am || Up

                  Agree with this, and also think the last point is why the Giants would never trade Bumgarner to the A’s unless it was a massive overpay (Luzardo or Puk headlining).

                  I would be curious to see if the Jays would be open to a Stroman trade with Mateo as a headliner. Stroman seems like the best SP option to me.

                • andeux Jul 16,2019 11:07 am || Up

                  Given the option situation, I figure that if the A’s thought Mateo had much of a future, he and not Barreto would be the one getting major league playing time right now.

        You get a pass on that one because I was at the beach and couldn’t reply directly to FSU.

        Photographic evidence of the ugly look right here.

        Equipment manager Steve Vucinich had told A’s players that the team wasn’t bringing the gold jerseys on the road, but after several requests to do so – reliever Brian Fuentes even volunteered to have them sent by private jet if necessary – Vucinich checked and found the alternate jerseys are OK to wear away from home.

        So he packed them and saved them as a surprise, hiding them in the laundry room until after batting practice.

        “I didn’t know anything about it,” left fielder Hideki Matsui said through translator Roger Kahlon. “Perhaps our streak in a way is because of the gold jerseys. So hopefully we can continue to win in them.”

      9-7 but they fell 4 games further behind the Astros. I thought the deadline moves were about right; a marginal strengthening of their chance at a wild card berth, but giving away none of their chance to make real runs in 2020 and 2021 as Verlander and Greinke age and Cole is pitching for somebody else. Winning that FKing wild card game and then getting their butts kicked in the Division Series would be progress, but anyway if they can get a wild card or at least be in the hunt into Games 161-162, that’s reaching their upside for 2019.

    Dax sheppard told a cute story on late night. he was renting a house on lake austin and wanted to rent a pontoon boat. nobody rented them commercially, so he put it out on twitter. A guy responed he had one and would rent it to him.

    When Dax got to the lake he called the guy and he said he was about to pick the boat up which set off alarms for Dax. the guy showed up with a brand new boat and a paddleboard. Dax was worried this guy mortgaged the house to meet some celebrities. He felt a little better when the guy said his boat was not working properly and he traded it in for a new one, but he was very confused still.

    Also he said the guy was a total 10 and after he dropped off the boat he took the paddle board across the lake home. Dax was still freaking out a bit thinking the guy was doing something crazy so he googled his name “Huston Street”

    The Astros are getting screwed over by the Angels the same way the A’s got screwed last month. Astros-Angels in Anaheim tonight is a 6 p.m. game, and the Astros have a home game tomorrow night. Tomorrow’s opponent in Houston, the Rangers, are off today, so they will already be in Houston this evening while the Astros plane doesn’t land until around 4 a.m. The A’s had that with the night game in Anaheim followed by the game in Arlington.

    To me that compromises the product and I’d like to see the Players Association put its foot down on this once and for all in the next CBA. A team that’s playing a game in another city the next day should not be scheduled to land later than 1 a.m. local time. Allow three hours for the game, time after the game to travel from the ballpark to the airport which obviously varies (quite short in Oakland), the time zone difference and the flight time, then back up first pitch as much as you have to for the 1 a.m. arrival.

    It wouldn’t be a problem for teams that schedule plenty of weekday afternoon games anyway, which is most of them, but the Angels in particular need to get their butts kicked on this.

    By giving themselves the usual day game which ended around 3:30, the A’s took off from Oakland at 5:05 yesterday. 3:16 flight time plus 2 hours time difference = 10:21 p.m. arrival in Minneapolis. That’s the way it should be every time.

        Actually there’s a rare one coming up in Oakland, Yankees-A’s on Thursday 8/22. In addition to any attendance advantage I’m sure Comcast wanted a Yankees night game instead of a Thursday afternoon game. The Yankees travel to LA to play the Dodgers the following night so it would fit the 1 a.m. requirement; also the A’s did move the start time up 30 minutes for however much that helps.

          If the getaway game has a game for the visiting team the next day, it should be forced to a day game. While there are circumstances where it would be financially advantageous and possibly semi-reasonable to do so, unless the visiting team is off the next day for travel, a night game shouldn’t be allowed. I agree with MikeV that it’s bullshit. As for what the home team has going on the next day, that’s their call.

          I hadn’t thought to check this side of it, but the Angels are playing in Seattle tomorrow night. That’s probably why tonight’s game starts at 6 rather than 7. They don’t lose the two hours the Astros do but a 2 a.m. landing in Seattle is still about the best they can do. Somebody please slam some mobile stairs into the wing of their plane tonight. I’ll try to figure out how they did tomorrow morning.

            That was a relatively quick game, ending about 8:45.

            Only nerds need to read the rest of this:

            Here are the two flights: Astros, Angels. Ignore the “scheduled” times; the flights leave shortly after the team buses get to LAX, whenever that may be.

            The “how do you know those are the flights” is answered by the “Activity Log” at the bottom of each page. The airline gives a specific flight number to each team for their charters, so looking at the recent history of that flight number you see it matches the teams’ recent travel. I found these by looking for all flights from LA airports to Houston airports tonight and also for LA to Seattle.

            For several years the A’s have flown in a specific airplane, the Dallas Mavericks’ team plane. I would guess Fisher knows Cuban and made a deal. But in that storm that hit the Dallas area while the A’s were there, that plane succumbed to the attacking staircase. It looks like they put enough duct tape on it to fly it empty to the Rockford IL airport, where UPS has a maintenance base for its fleet. So the A’s have substituted Delta airplanes and they have also been assigned their own flight number.
