Friday Grill or lounge or whatever 284

Come for the Russian spam, stay for the betting tips.

Since this is still nominally an A’s blog, it’s worth mentioning that Pat Venditte was lost on waivers the other day. While I was not as gaga as some of you about him, there are still about six relievers on the roster who were worse, so I’m not sure I get this one.

In more tenuously sports-related news, I saw this the other day, about a study that “propose[s] that research claiming to debunk the hot hand in basketball is flawed.” I haven’t looked at the original paper, but (unless I am missing something) the explanation given here, in the article and accompanying infographic, is crap:

But by concentrating only on the flips that follow heads and ignoring the other data, we are fooled by a selection bias.

No, you are fooled by taking an average of averages in an intentionally wrong way in order to get a counterintuitive answer. I guess that’s a kind of selection bias.

Finally (and not at all sports-related): eww. Fascinating story, but yuck.

    Supposedly Toronto may well end up re-waiving Venditte when it hits is own 40-man roster crunch shortly.

    I too am skeptical of Venditte’s long term prospects. Nevertheless, the A’s with their mostly anonymous roster could easily have kept him around for pure fan interest purposes. That they did not make that cheap easy decision says a lot.

        Sure, obviously they think that. I see a lot of scrap heap, they think Dubront Coloumbe Leon Scribner Muncy Fuld etc etc all have more value, and they ascribe no extra benefit to the fan interest Venditte brings. Me, I keep watching my team when it sucks, not as much when it’s also boring.

    That NYT story was fascinating indeed. But damn, you can’t call yourself a scientist if you’re not willing to put your results up for outside scrutiny. I suspect people who grew up before social media (basically the ~25 and over group, since facebook was emerging when I was a freshman, so you need to go a bit younger) are going to have to come to grips with what it means to have every bad choice you’ve ever made permanently documented, and that we will generally fail to do so until our kids have enough control to force us to adapt.

      Did you read the Chronicle story?

      Here are some highlights:

      A special touch for the sake of authentication (as opposed to any copies that may appear): Each player’s ring has four fluorescent diamonds, visible only under black light and thus requiring a certain device for illumination. That number symbolizes the four championships the Warriors have won in their history, including the 1946-47 and 1955-56 seasons in Philadelphia.

      The rings were designed by Jason of Beverly Hills:

      “We’ve also done rings for Chelsea, in the English Premier League, and we did the World Series of Poker bracelets,” Arasheben said. “We’re not a super-giant luxury outfit like Tiffany’s (a $2 billion company that only recently dealt with sports teams, including the Giants). But there were seven companies vying for the Warriors’ rings, including two that have virtually monopolized the sports-ring market over the last 50 years: Jostens and Balfour. So this feels like a huge accomplishment.”

      And my absolute favorite note:

      Each player is being given a box in which the ring can spin slowly on a motorized turntable, illuminated by built-in lights.

He was doomed already, really — his presidential ambitions entered their death spiral the moment being the answer to the question “What if Jeb Bush were a handsome Mormon man, rather than a congealed cottage cheese sculpture?” failed to get Mitt Romney elected — but Rubio turning away from Jeb was the official time of death. All we’re waiting for now is for him to pull the sheet over himself.

        Dammit Cooter!

        My ancestors are being vilified by uninformed demagogues who are demanding an America that is reminiscent of Nazi Germany in 1933, or of other totalitarian societies that banned heart-felt and popular points of view. These sanctimonious and closed minded zealots have gone so far as to ban “The Dukes of Hazzard,” the all-time favorite family show of all American families, no matter of what race or region.

      Tomorrow and next Saturday (home vs. USC and at Oregon) are the first crossroads for Sonny Dykes. It’s midway through his third season, neither of those teams is unbeatable, and after two straight losses including a discouragingly uncompetitive loss to UCLA it’s time for Dykes to show either that he can compete in the Pac-12, or that his ceiling is winning games in whatever chickenshit conference Louisiana Tech plays in. He was a Sandy Barbour hire and Mike Williams owes him no loyalty, just the ~$4 million for 2016 and 2017. We did just pay Jeff Tedford $5.5 million to go away so finding that money might not be easy.

        Regardless of who the Cal coach might be next year, I’d advise Goff to stay in school. Not because it would be good for Cal (which it would) but because it would maximize his likely NFL earnings. If he comes out now he’ll warm somebody’s bench for a couple years then wind up in the Canadian League or the Arena League. I think he’d benefit a LOT with another year at the Pac-12 level.

        I bet he listens to the agents though.

      Grandma, who only has cable because she wants to watch Game Show Network and The Cooking Channel, got fed up with paying for ESPN’s exorbitant rights deals to televise football. So, there goes Grantland.

      ESPN wanted to increase the license fee distributors pay it to $6 per subscriber per month. So its executives cut deals that made sure that ESPN and ESPN2 would be on the highest-penetrated tiers of service — expanded basic. At the same time, ESPN lowered penetration benchmark levels from more than 90 percent of all subscribers to a number closer to 80 percent.

      Over the ensuing few years, cable operators discovered the low-cost, skinny bundles and started marketing them without ESPN. Expanded basic still is the most popular tier, but the mini-tiers without ESPN have been gaining traction.

      ESPN’s subscriber losses, which have seen it lose nearly 8.5 million homes in the last 4 1/2 years, according to Nielsen estimates, or down about 8 percent, are at a rate that is declining faster than the rest of the industry.

              Anticipating a question here, Cal’s last three games have called into serious question the matter of Goff being ready to succeed in the NFL next year. If he comes out, a situation like San Francisco seems doomed. His prospects would probably be best if he goes the Aaron Rodgers route, getting drafted by a good team and learning from the bench behind some aging veteran (Tom Brady?). Goff could raise his stock again in the final month plus crappy bowl game but he’s no Andrew Luck in any event.

              I’ve seen a few rumblings that Sonny Dykes may be looking for greener pastures; it would be doing Cal a favor IMO if he walks away from $4 million and takes his 5-18 record in conference play with him. A coaching change could influence Goff’s stay/go decision either way.

      My real prediction is that ultimately, somehow, the Raiders end up where many thought they should be as soon as the first shovel went into the ground in Santa Clara: at Levi’s Stadium. Red seats and trim should not be a serious stumbling block to sharing a new $1.3 billion stadium. The NFL would probably incentivize a move to Levi’s.

      And with the way the 49ers are going, they’re going to need the revenue from a tenant. Plus, those fancy seats might not go empty if Derek Carr was on the field.

      If the Raiders did end up in Santa Clara, they should force the Santa Clara Niners to let Clay Wood handle the playing surface, since their own people are clearly incompetent.

      It strikes me as tacky to pander to these groups by presenting nuclear weapons as a whites vs. blacks issue. Can’t this organization just present its position the same way as it would be presented to whites or Asians? It sounds like they’re trying to jump on the anti-cops bandwagon and I’m not sure that connection stands up.

      • ptbnl Nov 5,2015 2:33 pm || Up

        Certainly it’s a wider powerful/powerless issue, but that also takes a particular cast in the context of race – from the environmental racism of uranium mining and nuclear waste disposal, through the forced displacement of indigenous peoples for testing, to their only use where I am convinced that a second bomb would not have been dropped on Germany.

        I also disagree that Black Lives Matter is per se an anti-cop movement – let alone bandwagon. To my understanding it’s a movement against the (hugely disproportionate) execution of black people that has to face the fact that a frightening number of those murders are committed by police offices.

        • Soaker Nov 5,2015 6:09 pm || Up

          I think the race-baiting of a slogan like “Black Lives, White Bombs” cheapens an important discussion. Perhaps the nature of the “event” requires that approach? I hope Mrs. ptbnl et al come up with a better title but in any case I’ll pass on the “event”.

    Another limerick
    These preseason games are ridiculous
    Kirk Saarloos’ performance did tickle us
    But no Cruz control

      I still can’t believe the Falcons were willing to take a FG down 4 points with 3 minutes left in the game. If I were a fan of that team, I probably would’ve broken some things (I’d also be a redneck southerner, but that’s a separate issue).

          Part of that is announcing “finalists” for the various awards — and Sonny is in the top 3 for Cy Young. Though honestly, I expect him to be a distant third behind Price and Keuchel (who I think will win). I’m surprised that Sale didn’t beat out Gray.

          • colin Nov 10,2015 5:28 pm || Up

            Interesting that Keuchel, Price, Gray are the top 3 pitchers by bWAR. So I guess that means that BBWAA have stopped worrying too much about wins and instead moved on to ERA+IP. Gray is only 9th in the AL by fWAR, so they definitely haven’t gotten on the FIP bandwagon yet.

    I noticed my sprinklers were going off this morning. Seeing as how it rained here all night and it isnt my watering day I decided I should go turn off the timer. Apparently this so shocked my system that it literally lost its top.

    I got a knock on the door 3 minutes before a phone interview was scheduled that I have a geyser erupting in front of the water valve, and I pretty much had to snorkel in to turn it off. Nothing like talking to the national director of WFM in soaking sweats.

    Awful generic offseason article is here!

    -Billy Bean is that rare GM who hates to lose!

    With Beane, there are two things that have been proven — he is competitive and he doesn’t sit still.

    -As MikeV already pointed out on the book of Faces: Billy is that guy from the movie!

    Beane would rather be in the workout room, releasing his energy, watching the game on television.

    -And clearly this guy did not either watch baseball in 2015 or look at the statistics from said year:

    There is a lineup nucleus with DH Butler, right fielder Josh Reddick, catcher Stephen Vogt, center fielder Crisp, third baseman Brett Lawrie and shortstop Marcus Semien

    Other than that it’s a fun read.
