Since this is still nominally an A’s blog, it’s worth mentioning that Pat Venditte was lost on waivers the other day. While I was not as gaga as some of you about him, there are still about six relievers on the roster who were worse, so I’m not sure I get this one.
In more tenuously sports-related news, I saw this the other day, about a study that “propose[s] that research claiming to debunk the hot hand in basketball is flawed.” I haven’t looked at the original paper, but (unless I am missing something) the explanation given here, in the article and accompanying infographic, is crap:
But by concentrating only on the flips that follow heads and ignoring the other data, we are fooled by a selection bias.
No, you are fooled by taking an average of averages in an intentionally wrong way in order to get a counterintuitive answer. I guess that’s a kind of selection bias.
Finally (and not at all sports-related): eww. Fascinating story, but yuck.
And by “Friday” I assume you mean “until El Nino passes.”
This grill is going to attract so many comments that the blog will be back on track in no time. I can feel it.
Hey, when I say “take Cal plus the three and take the over” there is a hell of a lot of money to be made.
Supposedly Toronto may well end up re-waiving Venditte when it hits is own 40-man roster crunch shortly.
I too am skeptical of Venditte’s long term prospects. Nevertheless, the A’s with their mostly anonymous roster could easily have kept him around for pure fan interest purposes. That they did not make that cheap easy decision says a lot.
It says they have other players who need to be on the 40 man roster more than him.
Thanks, and go As.
Sure, obviously they think that. I see a lot of scrap heap, they think Dubront Coloumbe Leon Scribner Muncy Fuld etc etc all have more value, and they ascribe no extra benefit to the fan interest Venditte brings. Me, I keep watching my team when it sucks, not as much when it’s also boring.
The guy near the SF Ferry Building who sells these atheists/A’s shirts how has one in the style of an Angels shirt that says “A-holes.” Complete with halo over the A.
i really wish there was a way to own and wear stuff ike that without having to store it in your house
I didn’t realize that Haren is calling it quits. An interesting coincidence that Hudson, Zito and Haren all retire the same year.
At some point about 10 years from now when I come on here and casually say “I think I might re-paint my bedroom again,” can one of you FKers come burn the place down while I’m out looking at paint samples?

On the chipped credit cards and readers, are you all running into this: You insert your chipped credit card into the slot and the grocery checker says “Oh no, we’re not ready for that yet, you still need to swipe your card.” Has happened here twice in the last two days.
So far whatever option I choose is wrong. I then get to reswipe, insert whatever, and then usually do it a third time.
TWHS
HA! I’ve never done it a third time in my life!!
wait..can I take that back??
I’m officially sick of job hunting. If one of you guys can go ahead and hire me for something that would be great..thx.
slf just interviewed for a job she doesn’t really want, but wants the pay raise. she went to her bosses (she works at the California AG’s office) to say hey, i might get offered this job, you want to change my classification?
she has gotten 2 days of “don’t go and here are the reasons we can’t ask for a reclassification”
theses people are lawyers. advocates. and they seem to be unabe to ask for a reclassification of a persons job. she is close to top step, she is going to have to leave soon anyway.
they are so dumb.
The whole process of getting, moving up, and keeping jobs is stupid. But I left my soapbox outside so I will just leave it at the fact that you can never get actual feedback to improve your success at getting the job for fear of some imaginary suit.
That NYT story was fascinating indeed. But damn, you can’t call yourself a scientist if you’re not willing to put your results up for outside scrutiny. And you can’t call yourself a therapist and sleep with your patient. She doesn’t deserve 40 years in prison, maybe, but she sure was wrong, and really has no excuse not to have known that.
Maybe she doesn’t deserve 40 years, but it’s far beyond just a therapist sleeping with a patient. Seems like she is mentally ill.

That last one was indeed a fascinating story, on many levels.

Well, yeah. Bacon is awesome.

I’m not that conflicted
Which way?
I’m with the side that knows the difference between idiosyncratic and idiotic.
Yup. Holy shit. Let’s overreact to our own complete and utter ignorance!
I probably am too. But it’d be a lot easier if things didn’t start with a post like: “I just had an annoying customer. People in that group suck”
I imagine that wasn’t the first time it’s happened. And I also imagine that if each time it did happen people were self entitled about it, I could see them being less than polite with their word choice. The restaurant owner is by no means innocent in this mess. But man, all kinds of idiocy going on there on the other end.
Everybody feels entitled to act like an asshole now.
Yeah. Society is a long way from knowing how to handle the mass of information available online. I suspect people who grew up before social media (basically the ~25 and over group, since facebook was emerging when I was a freshman, so you need to go a bit younger) are going to have to come to grips with what it means to have every bad choice you’ve ever made permanently documented, and that we will generally fail to do so until our kids have enough control to force us to adapt.

I like the idea of govt run housing for workers, but it seems like it needs a little diversity in the residents.
Also, makes you think about low skill jobs. How do they attract and retain workers? Well, they don’t.
SF needs a new comprehensive plan and any traffic impact complaints should be shoved up the ass of the complainor.
Rent prices suck in general. :(
Thanks, and go As.
My first place cost 45 bucks a month…that was nice.
How do you attract and retail workers? It’s actually easy. You pay better. Okay, easier said than done. But the point remains. Small businesses are screwed, but if they don’t pay a living wage for the area, they’re not going to have people willing to work for them. What we really need is a better incentives for employers to pay better.
and then you have to charge more, yeah?
Thank god the NBA is starting.
I’m watching. The atmosphere is super lame. But they did it all to have Alcatraz right behind Chuck’s head.

I’m trying to think how much money it would take to get me to watch this debate….I’m thinking two grand.
It might be neat to see how terribly awful the candidates are.
I also enjoy watching to see them completely ignore questions while their answers end up talking about Benghazi, Obamacare, etc
Thanks, and go As.
It’s quite a group. I’m starting to see Carson and Trump stickers on cars around here…seems like a good reason to move.
For the Dems I’m seeing a lot of Bernie stickers and some Hillary stuff…sadly, I have yet to see any Martin O’Malley stickers probably due to the fact that Martin O’Malley doesn’t actually exist.
Bet Rubio for the nomination. The forces behind the GOP won’t let Trump or Carson happen.
I only bet on Yahtzee.
I never get that damn large straight when I need it.
4 of a kind here. And you ever notice how you will get a great chance the turn AFTER you use it for like 7 points because you missed a straight?
Jeb just went in on Rubio. Surest sign that those two think they are fighting to be the one standing when Trump finally implodes and Carson returns to his home planet.
Rubio kind of owned him though. He’s pretty good at this.
Gotta love Albert Burneko:
That was a pretty fun read.
Both made incredibly dumb points. Oh hey, I’m going to copy this guy that failed. Well, I’m already copying that guy who failed.
I can’t believe they are still having pre-debate debates for these losers.
LOL Chris Christie still thinks he’s running for president.
This is the first of these debates I’ve watched. It’s like science fiction.
And not just because Marco Rubio looks like a Vulcan.
Rand Paul just put air quotes around people who think they are sent to Washington to be “adults” and “govern.”
Huckabee just said his plan for reining in Medicare costs is to cure cancer, alzheimers, heart disease, and diabetes. I swear I am not making this up (though I may be hallucinating at this point).
That’s my former Governor…YEEHAW!!!!
It’s incredible that the same state can elect Bill Clinton and that walking Cracker Barrel menu.

Hi Jennifer.
So, Bed, when Miss Hawaii gets home in the evening and says “Honey! Kids! I’m home and dinner’s ready!” does she still pull the Arby’s sandwiches out of the bag, or are they now Egg McMuffins and Sausage Biscuits?
She’d definitely go with the Arby’s. We did have Egg McMuffins for breakfast today though…we’re a classy family.
Nothing beats the Eggamuffin.

You just led me on a google search which led me to this.
Dammit Cooter!
They may have misjudged the popularity and demographic for that show just a wee bit.
It’s probably best that I not Google search for “Cooter” while still at work, I think.
Why would you even go there?
Ahh, the good old days of TDS.

That’s okay. My uncle was killed in a car accident yesterday. Someone ran a stop sign and t-boned him at a high rate of speed. I’m a mess. I ended up just sedating myself.
Oh god. So sorry Jennifer.
Damn … so sorry.
Oh my goodness. I’m so sorry. The same damn thing happened to my uncle many years back. {hugs}

Godspeed.
Thanks, and go As.
Sorry Jennifer, that’s awful.
Oh man, that hurts. So sorry to hear it.
so sorry
Don’t look now, but the North Carolina football team might be good enough to make the ACC championship game (and get crushed then sent to El Paso to play Cal in the Sun Bowl).
Tomorrow and next Saturday (home vs. USC and at Oregon) are the first crossroads for Sonny Dykes. It’s midway through his third season, neither of those teams is unbeatable, and after two straight losses including a discouragingly uncompetitive loss to UCLA it’s time for Dykes to show either that he can compete in the Pac-12, or that his ceiling is winning games in whatever chickenshit conference Louisiana Tech plays in. He was a Sandy Barbour hire and Mike Williams owes him no loyalty, just the ~$4 million for 2016 and 2017. We did just pay Jeff Tedford $5.5 million to go away so finding that money might not be easy.
Regardless of who the Cal coach might be next year, I’d advise Goff to stay in school. Not because it would be good for Cal (which it would) but because it would maximize his likely NFL earnings. If he comes out now he’ll warm somebody’s bench for a couple years then wind up in the Canadian League or the Arena League. I think he’d benefit a LOT with another year at the Pac-12 level.
I bet he listens to the agents though.
And watching this Baylor vs. K-State game, it seems to me Sonny Dykes’ coaching style and the predominant style of play in the Big 12 would be a terrific fit. Make it happen, Bed.
I’d go away for half that much.
Thanks, and go As.
Wow. ESPN just killed Grantland with no warning.
Based on the tweets from several staffers, it sure looks like they didn’t even call a meeting. Just put out a press release.
I was worried that we lost FK in the same action all morning long..
No, but we did hire Bill Simmons!!!
You have a problem with that?

How’s the snow looking, Soaker?
Big fat flakes reported by my ski buddies in Tahoe City.
About 3 inches of wet cement at my place so far. Not bad for November 2. It’s supposed to be pretty cold the next couple days so the resorts can crank the snow machines at full blast.

VD to the Donkeys, for next to nothing.
I guess we’ll learn if he’s really not good anymore or if the Niners just forgot how to use him.
He forgot how to have track star speed and is afraid of being tackled.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, but he has a QB who forgot how to NFL too.
Now he’ll have a chance to learn how to bench.
Yep. Blaine Gabbert is our savior!!!
Anticipating a question here, Cal’s last three games have called into serious question the matter of Goff being ready to succeed in the NFL next year. If he comes out, a situation like San Francisco seems doomed. His prospects would probably be best if he goes the Aaron Rodgers route, getting drafted by a good team and learning from the bench behind some aging veteran (Tom Brady?). Goff could raise his stock again in the final month plus crappy bowl game but he’s no Andrew Luck in any event.
I’ve seen a few rumblings that Sonny Dykes may be looking for greener pastures; it would be doing Cal a favor IMO if he walks away from $4 million and takes his 5-18 record in conference play with him. A coaching change could influence Goff’s stay/go decision either way.
I hope all the Broncos get VD.
The Warriors are going to do terrible things to the rest of the NBA this season.
Every time I glanced up from the bridge table tonight they were 10 points further ahead.
Some associate got to bill some solid hours building that list.
@GM: I would gladly abandon my decades-long disdain for the Washington football team if they renamed themselves the Washington Capitalism Sucks Donkey Balls.
Nah. Washington Anal Fantasy Collection all the way. The DCAFC!!!
The merch sales for either would make the change worthwhile.
Voted No on SF’s anti-AirBnB Prop F, despite feeling kind of dirty about it because of the No campaign’s obnoxious ad campaign.
current law needs a fix. Its unenforceable.
the city is going to have to pony up for the ensuing law suits from ABB/VRBO if they want to enforce it. and they should.
What I liked about F was the private right against the platform, not that that wouldn’t have been tied up in court for years, but the city won’t/can’t do anything about illegal hotels, something was needed
I agree. I just don’t like making laws like this through the ballot process. Unintended consequences that are hard to undo.
thats fair.
but the obnoxiousness of ABB and the $8M campaign that railed against things that are in the current law in an attempt to persuade people not to vote for it was too much of a FK you for me not to vote yes.
Hopefully the peskin fronted board can get something passed. even if

I can see why the writers of these spam posts are targeting FK…when you can reach 8-9 readers you have to hit that and hit it hard.
I just read an article about the five most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL and the Raiders weren’t on the list…the times they are a changin’
Remember like 2 years ago when Reggie McKenzie was literally hitler
Thanks, and go As.
I’m still not totally sold on everything. The team is improved, and the coaching is much better, but I’d like to see how the season plays out before I say all is well. If Carr continues to play like this and the team plays well then I’ll happily join the parade.
Over his tenure is there another GM anywhere with a better overall draft record?
Again I’m happy the team is improving but this is still just a 4-3 team. I’m not ready to crown McKenzie quite yet. He’s had plenty of misses in the draft as well. I’m going to let the season play out and hope that everything continues to go in the right direction.
I’m waiting for Jack Del Rio to announce that he’s accepted the USC job.
That would really suck. I’ve been impressed with Del Rio so far. He’s a professionally competent coach…which is something we haven’t had in years.
Which reminds me, ESPN’s story on the whole Carroll -> Kiffin -> Sarkisian mess as USC is pretty good.
It’s amazing to me how Kiffin has been able to fail up like he has. He’s a clown.
I’ll make sure to post my exhaustively researched detailed plan on what the Oakland Athletics should do this off-season within the next 24 hours so be ready to have your minds blown. (Editors note: we read the plan, it involved being gritty, drinking whole milk, and the hiring of Lou Brown…it was also written in crayon.)
After that, can you do the 9ers? Because I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain to Jed York why firing Harbaugh was a bad decision.
I’ve decided instead of letting my kids go to school I’m just going to have them watch the opening speech from Patton by George C. Scott twice a day until they turn 18.
Or you could just wait for the rapture.

Gerrard back to Liverpool?
But this is mind-boggling to me:
How can any of those things be a surprise?
I have to assume he meant that he wasn’t aware of how difficult they would be. If he wasn’t aware of them at all he’s a damn fool.
I don’t think it can be the former, since he’s done them all previously with Liverpool in European competition and with England. My guess is that he didn’t really think about how big and varied the US is.
He never really played at altitude for Liverpool or England. I doubt he played much on artificial turf either, or in heat like Houston or Dallas in July and August other than maybe Manaus, Brazil last summer.
Forgive me in advance.
I only got a little teary-eyed at work today. No full-on ugly cry. I wanted to though. I saw my dad walking in from outside and I almost didn’t recognize him. He’s been sick with a tick-borne illness for a few weeks now. Three weeks ago his uncle died. Last week his brother was killed. He looked beat down.
Oof, that is rough. My closest experience was when I was finally confronted with the reality of my dad’s Alzheimer’s disease. I don’t really have any good advice, except to find something to do where you can make a difference and try not to worry about things that you can’t change.
My whole family looks lost. I didn’t know it was going to be this hard.
I’m sorry :(
Pretend I made a witty comment about boobs and it made you smile.
Thanks, and go As.
I’m sorry to hear that your family is going through so much pain.
Hang in there Jennifer.
While I’ve always thought that things like “salutes to the troops” and the singing of god bless america at sporting events were basically military propaganda, I did not realize that they were literally paid advertisements by the DoD. And John McCain and Jeff Flake (of all people) want to put a stop to it.
Jeff Flake is pretty good, as Republican officeholders go.

The Ruppert Raiders?
If the Raiders did end up in Santa Clara, they should force the Santa Clara Niners to let Clay Wood handle the playing surface, since their own people are clearly incompetent.
Moving the Raiders I’d like. But they’d have to pry Clay Wood from the A’s’ cold dead hands.
The anti-nuclear weapons organization mrs ptnbl sits on the board of is co-sponsoring an event with various black groups, so we’re spit-balling possible titles for the event – any suggestions?
The current favorite is Black Lives, White Bombs with Nuclear Racism as a dull backup.
With Nukes, No Lives Matter
Black Lives, Nuclear Matter(s)
Half-Lives Matter.
heh
It strikes me as tacky to pander to these groups by presenting nuclear weapons as a whites vs. blacks issue. Can’t this organization just present its position the same way as it would be presented to whites or Asians? It sounds like they’re trying to jump on the anti-cops bandwagon and I’m not sure that connection stands up.
Certainly it’s a wider powerful/powerless issue, but that also takes a particular cast in the context of race – from the environmental racism of uranium mining and nuclear waste disposal, through the forced displacement of indigenous peoples for testing, to their only use where I am convinced that a second bomb would not have been dropped on Germany.
I also disagree that Black Lives Matter is per se an anti-cop movement – let alone bandwagon. To my understanding it’s a movement against the (hugely disproportionate) execution of black people that has to face the fact that a frightening number of those murders are committed by police offices.
I think the race-baiting of a slogan like “Black Lives, White Bombs” cheapens an important discussion. Perhaps the nature of the “event” requires that approach? I hope Mrs. ptbnl et al come up with a better title but in any case I’ll pass on the “event”.
I have already forgotten who won the world series
I have already forgotten who won the last 25 world series.
I decided to go to the OC to dig up the first comment I left there. My first two comments were not anything of consequence, but my third one (on April 1, 2005) was this, and I’m rather proud of it:
The Harikkala Release!
Blaine “Tom Brady” Gabbert.
Thanks, and go As.
We’re a virtual lock to meet (or exceed!) my 4-12 projection now that we have a QB who throws interceptions AND touchdown passes.
Man, color me a starry-eyed optimist. Hard to imagine we don’t lose 15 straight after today.
I still can’t believe the Falcons were willing to take a FG down 4 points with 3 minutes left in the game. If I were a fan of that team, I probably would’ve broken some things (I’d also be a redneck southerner, but that’s a separate issue).
Yep. They just wanted to FK up the niners’ draft pick with that one. Still stunned the niners held on though.
I mean…
I can explain the thinking. Put 3 on the board, get a stop, kick a winning FG.
But, I mean… Atlanta’s defense sucks, they have the NFL’s leading rusher, and needed TWO YARDS to win the game.
Just a stupid decision.
Thanks, and go As.
…and worst case you have a terrible football team backed up on their own goal line.
Your lack of trust in Tom Brady 2.0 is disturbing.
Thanks, and go As.
Why am I so excited about Marc Maron finally landing the Lorne interview?
What in the world are they waiting for to announce the MLB awards? Is the Broward County Elections Board still examining ballots or something?
I was just wondering about this.
the idea is to keep baseball in the headlines longer in the year
Part of that is announcing “finalists” for the various awards — and Sonny is in the top 3 for Cy Young. Though honestly, I expect him to be a distant third behind Price and Keuchel (who I think will win). I’m surprised that Sale didn’t beat out Gray.
Interesting that Keuchel, Price, Gray are the top 3 pitchers by bWAR. So I guess that means that BBWAA have stopped worrying too much about wins and instead moved on to ERA+IP. Gray is only 9th in the AL by fWAR, so they definitely haven’t gotten on the FIP bandwagon yet.
ec bait
Yeah, these guys are taking it to another level. Still, pretty cool to be mentioned. And to get the FG checks…
odd. PTBNLbait
I’ve definitely noticed an increase in the number of planes needing to be serviced – and occasionally replaced – at the gate, post-boarding.
The thanks I get for trying to help out in a drought.
I noticed my sprinklers were going off this morning. Seeing as how it rained here all night and it isnt my watering day I decided I should go turn off the timer. Apparently this so shocked my system that it literally lost its top.
I got a knock on the door 3 minutes before a phone interview was scheduled that I have a geyser erupting in front of the water valve, and I pretty much had to snorkel in to turn it off. Nothing like talking to the national director of WFM in soaking sweats.
How is your morning going?

Awful generic offseason article is here!
-Billy Bean is that rare GM who hates to lose!
-As MikeV already pointed out on the book of Faces: Billy is that guy from the movie!
-And clearly this guy did not either watch baseball in 2015 or look at the statistics from said year:
Other than that it’s a fun read.
god dammit.
I had already forgotten about butler and lawrie
I’ve already had three shoveling and snowblower mornings. In last year’s pathetic winter there were about six total. Still two weeks until Thanksgiving and we’re off to a strong start. Whatever effect we get from El Niño isn’t supposed to kick in until after the first of the year. You skiers, get ready. The next storm is due Sunday or Monday.

We can be Cautiously Optimistic!
Three years for unsportsmanlike conduct
That’s ruff.
Or maybe just arf the distance to the goal line?
Ray Ray never imagined it was he who would be getting collared.
(This post was blatantly stolen from the Deadspin comments).
Ray-Ray is such an idiot, my least favorite Raider by far. He sucks as a backup LB and as a special teamer. His fuck up allowed the punt block Sunday. I will rejoice when they finally cut him.
I feel like I’ve heard Greg Papa lament that Ray-Ray had someone wrapped up but let him get away several times in my sporadic Raiders listening this season. That may just be because I love the name Ray-Ray so I perk up when he’s mentioned.
That cannot seriously be a felony.

He’s pretty borderline even without the PEDs. I guess the homer numbers probably would have gotten him there, but it wouldn’t have been a lock.
He was a heck of a power hitter even without PEDs. But if he hadn’t used them, he absolutely would have been suspected of using them, fits the criteria to a tee. He was kind of in a no win situation for his legacy.

I got nothing against Bernie Sanders, but man are his supporters posting some inane links about him on my Facebook.
have you seen berned in DC? I repost those.
I don’t think I’ve seen those. The one I’m thinking of right now is a salon article of Reasons I Won’t Vote for Hillary if She’s the Nominee that includes such items as “she uses euphemisms” and “people on Reddit were mean to me.”
The guy who wrote that salon piece also published I’m a Liberal Democrat. I’m Voting for Rand Paul in 2016. Here Is Why. on Huffington Post about a year ago. I think he just hates Hillary.
i am not sure who the berned in DC guys support, its mostly punk quotes next to pictures of bernie sanders.
its just funny
Anyone had The Bruery’s Black Tuesday? I’ve just been gifted a 2015 bottle, and am wondering whether I should let it age for another year before cracking it.
Carol Doda dies. The Bay Area sags. Somebody better find MikeV to see if he needs to be consoled.
IDK who that is.
Thanks, and go As.
I knew who she was when I was a kid. She was legendary. From the SFGate piece:
I’m not dead.
Yet.
My last concert of the year tomorrow. Sadness.
Well she will be soon. She’s very ill.
She doesn’t want to go on the cart.
So what did I miss?
I have been creating 2-3 new posts every day!
Unfortunately I am also now a Russian bot that wants you to go to a university or something.
We found out I’m your biological father.
