Justified – Season 6, Episode 8 – Moving the Plot Along 3

This was one of those episodes that seems a little better in retrospect. Or maybe it was just me.

There were alliances of convenience, bad guys with a mixture of shrewdness and stupidity, Daddy issues – almost all hallmarks of the show. Raylan’s issues with his father have been delved into thoroughly, and I’m not sure how much this episode added to our insights there. (Nice to see the actor who plays Raylan’s late, unlamented father, even if the circumstances were a bit of a reach – and not just because he was a ghost.) Raylan teams up, in a way, with the overrated villain Avery to offer $100,000 from the much-touted bank vault for information leading to Ty Walker’s apprehension. It turns out that Walker is holed up at Ava’s, trying to negotiate with Boyd to get the money in said vault.

Boyd rats out Walker, understandably, and he runs and is shot in the back by Raylan. Walker could have been a better villain, as he showed when he hid all of Ava’s guns and let her know not to try anything. That was a good little scene. Alas, there were too few of those in his run. So Boyd gets the reward money, and there appears to be a lot more of it. But the whole thing really seems like a setup. Is all that money real? Boyd is so desperate for that cash he can taste it, which is never a good way to approach things. Avery may be overrated, but he’s not that stupid. And neither is Raylan, who has a very good idea of the plan.

In any event, the plot twists keep turning, and there are plenty of good, tossed-off lines. So it was fine episode, just not one that I think will stick in memory.

“The past is a statement. The future’s a question.” — Boyd Crowder (tagline?)

“You shot me in the back!” — Walker, dying. “If you wanted me to shoot you in the front, you should’ve run toward me.” Raylan .

I’m one episode behind and am still trying to figure out who Ava is double crossing. Or if she even knows.
