Games 136 and 137: Hotlanta, bringing the heat 68

The defending World Series Champions come to Oakland for a quickie one-night stand. Atlanta is only one game behind the Mets for the NL East lead; the winner there almost certainly gets the second bye in the National League. The Mets get their shot at the A’s on September 23-25.

Tonight at 6:40: Irvin vs. Kyle Wright. Wright is the MLB leader with 17 wins.

Wednesday at 12:37: Waldichuk vs. Spencer Strider. Now this game looks like one of the few in September worth watching. I missed Waldichuk’s first start in Washington so I want to see him, and Strider has a 13.7 K/9 with 5 double-digit strikeout performances since he moved into the rotation at the end of May, including 16 in his last start vs. Colorado. Because Strider was in the bullpen he doesn’t have enough innings to qualify for rate-stats leadership; Ohtani is the leader at 12 K/9.

Matt Olson brings a so-so .247/.332/.482 into the series. He OPS’d .896 in 2019 and .911 in 2021. Olson has 27 HR and 87 RBI, but also the expected 137 K. Meanwhile Freddie Freeman is sporting a .324/.395/.510 for the Dodgers.

It’s not insufferably hot here, but we are getting the constant rumble of thunder that you’re familiar with if you’ve spent any time in the Sierra, and the air feels bone dry.

Looking it up, one year ago today I was checking out possible future residence in Bellingham, Washington on an impromptu Northwest “vacation”, the reason for the “vacation” being the evacuation order due to the Caldor fire. They are salvaging the trees from that burn area and we see a constant parade of log trucks heading to a mill in Carson City.

Absolutely to the end! I did not make it in from the lot in time to chat with Jeff – I wasn’t fully committed to the bleachers when the great Bacon Tuesday tradition began – but my celery stuffed with whipped ricotta and bacon was among the treats in his takeout bag.

I don’t perceive that Ramon has much trade value at this point but maybe there’s some interest. It doesn’t seem like he will be in Mesa in February regardless.

Murphy has a ton of trade value though. No way he ever sees Mesa again.

Ken and Vince were mentioning Tim Roye taking over as PxP on Furd football radio. Cal is in that market after this season as Joe isn’t going to make 50 years after all (2022 is #48). That would be Roxy’s job for the asking but Roxy is more of a national guy now. OTOH Pac-12 Networks is probably going away after the 2023 season, Roxy is the #1 football PxP for them so he might have availability.

A couple other measures of suckiness, specifically at the Coliseum:

They are 22-44 at the Coliseum this year so at least they have matched the 1962 Mets (22-58 at home) and the 2019 Tigers (22-59). The Oakland worst is 31-50 in 1979. They are one home game short this season because of the lockout rescheduling so they need to go 9-5 to get to 31. 5-9 gets them over .333 which is terrible but not historically bad.

The 9-run outburst last night brought their total runs scored at home to 194, and moved the average from 2.85 runs/home game to 2.94. I’m wondering when was the last time anybody couldn’t put up 3/game at home. My mind went to those awful expansion Padres teams playing in the original cavernous configuration of San Diego Stadium, and they did it 3 times in their first 4 seasons: 2.95 in 1969, 2.88 in 1971 and 2.71 in 1972. That 2019 Tigers team was at 3.52; their awfulness was the 6.25 runs/game allowed at home. The ’62 Mets scored 4.19/game at the Polo Grounds (again, the pitching at 6.38). The A’s need to score 46 runs in the remaining 14 home games to get to an even 3.

Touchdown Jesus faceplanted off the wall this afternoon. They will put him back up this week and when the Bears look up at him, boy will he be pissed off. I’d rather that embarrassment had been saved for one more week.

Notre Dame went through a coaching change in the offseason. I suppose it’s possible that they just aren’t very good in 2022. They definitely have some extra motivation going into next week though.

On a tangent, but this is the brains trust …

About 10 years ago, with the Kaiser refurbishment and the Broadway Valdez plan, Oakland introduced a residents’ parking zone on our one-block street. They even got Kaiser to pay for the permits for the first 50 years! However they have never backed it up with any enforcement.

Enterprise has a rental location on Broadway that backs onto our street, and in the absence of enforcement has taken to using the street for vehicle storage. Last night they had 26 vehicles parked on the street, including one that completely blocked our neighbor’s driveway. The upshot is that there’s no parking on the street, the street is covered in trash dumped from returned cars, and every day is a constant chorus of car horns as they try to locate their vehicles.

We’ve talked with the manager (who acknowledges that it is illegal, and that he knows that it is illegal, but doesn’t intend to do anything about it), parking enforcement (who are completely unresponsive), code violation (who are sympathetic but have no leverage), and our district and the at-large city councilors (see parking enforcement).

    Suggestions beyond moving?

If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.

Agree with EM’s thought, also with the local govt pressure you need to keep it up. Easy to ignore one or two complaints, hard to ignore ongoing ones, especially in public. Email code enforcement and the Mayor and your CM (is it Fife?) every week. Email Joe DeVries in the City Administrator’s office. Get names of other specific people in each office, keep contacting them. Show up at every City Council meeting (very easy on Zoom) and speak during Open Forum. Pass these duties around between your neighbors so the impression is many angry people not one. This will work.

I see that sports in England has ground to a halt including postponement of Premier League matches scheduled for this weekend. It seems there’s a formal 10-day mourning period so that may continue through next week.

The NFL has three games scheduled in London this season but they are all in October.

No impact on sports in Canada to my knowledge. The Blue Jays were off yesterday, they’re on the road this weekend and their next home game on Monday is still on the schedule.

So Orinda’s Ken Dorsey is the Bills’ OC now. Dorsey could have gone to Cal, however that was during the Holmoe era and Cal wasn’t very appealing to anybody with talent on the offensive side. Holmoe did somehow land Kyle Boller, but Boller didn’t develop much until his senior season with Jeff Tedford in his first year.

According to this profile he wanted to go to either Tennessee or one of the SoCal schools, but wasn’t a top recruit and was initially an afterthought at Miami (not exactly a bad school for QBs).

I’m not sure the Bills have ever been the pre-season SB betting favorite before, even in the years when we went to 4 of them. Actually living up to that hype (at least for one week) by beating up on the defending champs, despite not playing our best game, was pretty sweet.
Last year, despite having the statistically top defense, the pass rush and really the DL in general were merely average. That sure looked fixed last night, and Von is obviously a big part of that.
My biggest worry is staying healthy, especially the QB who likes to pretend he’s a RB.
