108-109, The Gig Is Up 31

On the pregame Skyline High’s Bip Roberts makes sure to mention the many times he beat Mission High as a player and a coach and how great it is to know you rule the Bay. Dave Stewart moves into the TV booth to spread more of the East Bay love.

Well on one hand Oller isn’t getting outs. But on the other he’s taking a lot of pitches to do it.

Allowed a run on three of the most painful walks you’ll see.

Korach and Vince weren’t thrilled with his body language on the mound.

I knew home plate at the Coliseum was moved further out from the backstop at the very beginning. Monte says that was Joe DiMaggio pointing out on a visit to the stadium in the winter preceding the A’s move from KC that the original location of the plate (marked by a stake as the stadium was in Raiders configuration when they were looking at this) couldn’t be seen from some seats in the upper levels.

With the original plate location the foul line would have come very close to the stands in that area deep in the corners where the curving stands end and the stands run parallel to the foul line. There’s now several feet between the line and the stands there. In fact my vague memory says that in the early years the bullpen mounds were in those areas with the pitchers throwing to the catchers whose backs were to the outfield fence just outside the foul poles. The space was a little too tight so after a couple years the bullpen mounds were moved to their current location.

Improving the view of maybe 1,000 seats and degrading it for 48,000,

I found a photo that confirms my memory of the bullpen mound location…on AN. The bullpen bench hasn’t moved, but notice that the mounds are to the outfield side of the bullpen bench and the pitchers throw into the corner.

Having always disliked bullpen mounds in the field of play, I would like to see a return to this concept. Remove some seats from the field level below the aisle, as shown by the red line, and build a fence around the bench, mounds and plates on the green line. The Raiders aren’t around to complain about the lost seats.

That’s a big job. Jackhammers, engineers, union crews. Fisher won’t even pay Kaval to photoshop the bullpens out of play.

We’ve almost made it through 55 full seasons with nobody getting seriously hurt in those bullpens to my recollection. I’d have thought the players would have raised it as a safety issue but that hasn’t happened, and I don’t see MLB bringing it up independently. If Corey Seager is finally the guy who blows out his knee tripping over the mound down there you can imagine the howling though.

On the teevee they asked questions like “what do you think about the game today compared to when you played” and got predictable old guy answers.

That second belief is probably a minority opinion in the community where Joe lives now.

Joe lived in Baker City, OR for many years. It’s beautiful country out there near the Wallowas, but politically The Villages and Baker City are two peas in a pod.

Endless amounts of bad takes out there right now from various stripes of conservatives, but the most ridiculous genre might be “this is so dangerous, it will make his supporters angry and violent.”

Putting vegetarian options on the Cracker Barrel menu makes these people angry and violent. It is what it is.

Although the current combination of arguments to the effect of “if this can happen to the former president it can happen to you” and “increasing funding to catch tax cheats is tyranny” is also special. “Republicans should be allowed to commit crimes without being inconvenienced, let alone punished” is what it boils down to.

True. As with so many other things, the Republican party avatar being a common criminal just makes their pre-existing indefensible positions more obvious.
