The beginning of the end: 105-107 at Anaheim 96

A delightfully frenzied Deadline Day concludes with the A’s on the sidelines, making only one minor deal as they dispatch the forgettable Austin Allen to St. Louis for a 21-year-old low-A Venezuelan RHP, Carlos Guarate.

We move now to the extended denouement of the A’s 2022 season, first featuring a series in Orange County which sees the A’s trying to hunt down the Scioscias for fourth place in the division. I would not have had the A’s just 5 games back in this race in early August, but that’s where we are.

Both managers are looking around their clubhouses trying to get straight who’s gone and who’s new. I’ll fill in the pitching matchups as we go. The most interesting part is that Shohei Ohtani is scheduled for the Wednesday night start, and who knows, we haven’t had our 5Aces Night yet this year…

Tuesday at 6:38: Irvin vs. LHP José Suárez
Wednesday at 6:38: Kaprielian vs. Ohtani
Thursday matinee at 1:07: Blackburn vs. RHP Janson Junk

I’m not quite sure why I never quite turned on Lou. He blew a whole lot of games, many in agonizing fashion. A sense of dread hung around him for weeks or even months at a time. Still, I rooted for him in a way I never did for most other disappointing A’s relievers.

Yankees fans will not be so forgiving. Also without the teddy bear beard Lou might not be so lovable.

With lenscrafters crediting grover for something re the trade/prospects I looked at AN for the first time in ages. It seems that the employee Vox had running the thing, Alex Hall, has just been laid off. In the comments even Nico thinks “something has changed”.

Some time ago I looked at Halos Heaven for something and it was empty and abandoned. The AN thread pointed me to “Crashing the Pearly Gates” which appears to be their breakaway site but is much more of a SBN clone than Free Kraut.

One of the head ushers told me last homestand they’d sold almost 40K for Saturday and 30K for Sunday – so at least they’ve had some advance notice. But do the agencies they deal with have a few hundred extra people on the roster who’ve been sitting around waiting for two days of work? I agree it most likely will be a clusterfuck – so if you’re planning to attend, come early, buy parking in advance,
drink in the lot, and bring all of your own food and drinks inside. And/or stop by Lot B after 1 PM on Saturday where the 68s are having a tailgate.

The A’s staffing managers aren’t stupid, I don’t think. The understaffing crunch at the occasional big draw days over the last few years has played out the same way each time. And remember Kaval outright lying about BART service before the Giants series last year? It seems clear to me that it’s a conscious decision to sell as many tickets as possible and not worry about the reality of the experience day-of.

I think with the new scheduling with the A’s facing all 29 of the other teams, almost entirely in 3-game series, this issue should be eliminated next year and going forward. The A’s and Giants will still play 2H/2A, but they can do that either midweek or Thursday through Sunday.

I have only seen a few leaks about the 2023 schedule, plus the announcement of Cubs/Cardinals in London. I’m assuming we’re back to the pre-Covid days with next year’s schedule being reviewed by the teams and the union now, with the final version released shortly after Labor Day.
