Lollapalooza series – 102-104 78

Lollapalooza is going on in Chicago and so is a baseball series with a team from Oakland. Billy Strings played yesterday after Tove Lo, and one of them did not show their nipples. When he started with some straight up bluegrass you could tell the audience was whiplashed after her pop hits, but eventually he won over the crowd with some killer jams.

    Yes but did the crowd like Billy’s nipples?

      He probably should have at least bared one, I’m sure the crowd would have liked that. But he was rocking a great shirt with the old Zig Zag papers logo.

    I’m fond of the bleachers at Comiskey, reminiscent of the way the Coliseum used to be. Great backdrop to watch longballs disappear into.

    • sslinger Jul 29,2022 7:05 pm || Up

      I would say Comiskey was the single worst ballpark experience I’ve ever been to. We went between games at Miller and Wrigley, and weren’t prepared for the scene at all. As we approached the stadium we saw police arresting young black men for selling tickets, frothy christian groups protesting who knows what, just a scene one doesn’t expect going into a ballgame. The upper deck is really steep. Sat in a few different vantage points, and then in our seats we ended up sitting next to some racist cops who obviously didn’t live in the south side talking about how the scalpers and “bucket boys” playing drums outside the ballpark needed to be arrested or the scene could get out of hand. The only place we found that we liked was in right field under the stands and near the visiting bullpen, which also had a bar with the Stanley Cup finals on the year the Blackhawks won it. It’s checked off the list and I don’t ever need to go back. And of course the next day at Wrigley there’s all kinds of scalping and public drunkenness going on with nary a cop seen doing anything.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Jul 29,2022 7:18 pm || Up

        Yuck. Bad cops can make even a wonderful venue feel awful…I got pushed around at the WIltern Theater in LA for Jerry Band one time never went back. By contrast the cops at the unpleasant Sam Boyd SIlver Bowl in Vegas were almost a delight.

    Luis Castillo was traded for an absolute haul – a top 10 overall prospect, a backend top 100, a potential #4 starter (A’s probably would’ve asked for this as the headliner), and a decent relief prospect.

    From a talent and performance standpoint Montas is pretty close so even with the recent injury scare, there’s no way the A’s can fuck this up…right?

        To the point that if we aren’t getting a real top prospect that everyone agrees on we should just keep Frankie. I don’t want some 8th best prospect for the Jays and projects a solid #3 when he comes back from Tommy John in 2024…

        I do think Castillo is a bit ahead: better career ERA, better ERA this season, 200 more IP at the same age (though fewer this year), two all-star selections to none. So we shouldn’t expect quite the same haul.
        But of course I agree with the overall sentiment: no point trading him without getting some real prospects back. (Still shaking my head at getting only 1 top 100 guy total for Olson/Chapman/Bassitt/Manaea).

          In Cancun’s case they were already the most expensive burrito in town, by $2 or so, and I was willing to pay that for the high quality ingredients and spectacular salsa bar. Now it’s more like $5 more, and there’s a top notch Oakland taco truck (Sinaloa) parked around the corner from my house almost every day.

          Curious how much a super burrito costs at the best Mission joints now, like Pancho Villa or El Farolito.

                  Then it relies on yelp reviews as if the yelper who reviews safeways is qualified to judge a burrito. Yelpers suck and shoudln’t be the basis of any food judgements.

        Aside from the food options…I remember when Oakland’s second terminal opened, probably late 80s or early 90s. I don’t think Southwest was the original tenant but they started flying to Oakland shortly thereafter and quickly made it one of their major West Coast airports. Terminal 2 was new, fresh and spiffy at the time, but with age and increased traffic moving around in there feels like getting around the Coliseum’s lower concourse; it’s way too cramped for 2020s passenger loads. The original terminal, which originally had ground-level access to the airplanes and was upgraded in the 80s, hasn’t changed in 30 years except for post-9/11 security changes, but now it feels spacious and airy by comparison.

        You can write pretty much the same script after every A’s trade that involves them shipping away a major talent – they got value but they can’t get the big headliner top 20 prospect that other teams are getting for their top end talent.

        Waldichuk and Sears are backend of the rotation types with some mixed reports from different sources some of which place them as relievers. Medina is a huge wild card but is apparently out of options soon (h/t grover on AN) and hasn’t figured out how to throw strikes after 5 professional seasons.

        The A’s needed one of the Yankees big 3 (Volpe, Peraza, J. Dominguez) as most were expecting them to get for a Montas trade, and Waldichuk/Sears/Medina types to round out a valuable package. Instead they headlined with the backend (again), and A’s fans are stuck (again) hoping that they know something about those backend guys hitting their 90th percentile outcome more than everyone else.

        And that’s how this team is going to continue to operate under Beane/Forst. Nothing’s changing when the owner is so fucking terrible he’ll always be a shield for your sliding job performance.

        • vignette17 Aug 2,2022 8:40 am || Up

          I agree. While I think Forst (and Beane to whatever extent he’s still involved) have earned enough trust that we can believe they are better at evaluating some of these backend prospects than their peers, it’s not enough. It’s incredibly valuable when you get these guys as the backend of your trade deals. But when they headline a deal, things become incredibly risky.

          The real problem is the owner of course. But there are more and more cracks in the foundation. And constantly trying to be market innovators in an industry that keeps getting smarter and smarter with fewer and fewer resources? Well, it eventually just becomes impossible.

          For the record, I like Waldichuk and Sears. Very much dislike Medina. I just don’t see a path to contention in the next 3 years. They just don’t have the hitters. And with only two real trade chips left in Murphy/Laureano. They just didn’t get enough in the rebuild this time.

          • nevermoor Aug 2,2022 9:27 am || Up

            Fangraphs has Waldichuk as our overall best prospect, which is not to dispute this take, but does suggest this was a better deal than the comedy of errors in the offseason.

            "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
          • Soaker Aug 2,2022 9:58 am || Up

            There’s no path to completion of a new ballpark in the next 3 years either though. We’re just killing time until we get to that point, and clearly doing it at the lowest possible expense. Maybe Opening Day 2027 as an optimistic target at this point? If so, 2023 and 2024 don’t matter much, those are flatline years and you hope to see an upward trend in 2025 and 2026.

            That doesn’t explain why they might have settled for “any reasonable offer” rather than shooting for the headliners, except that headliners might be arbitration-eligible while they’re still suffering in the Coliseum. Just where I see this franchise over the next few years, assuming they do get a ballpark deal done in Oakland and barring a change in ownership.
