          I did not watch the A’s today. Happy to see they won. I was watching Angels-Orioles.

          The Baltimore Orioles are (gasp) a fun team to watch right now. They have found some pitching. They have a good outfield, 1B is solid, their #1 draft choice is catching. 2B-SS-3B is too much Rougned Odor and some other suck, and that needs to improve.

          The Orioles have another #1 choice in the upcoming draft. My thought is that, if the A’s on July 9, 2024 are where the Orioles are on July 9, 2022, we would be pretty happy.

      “What looks large from a distance, close up ain’t never that big.”

      How was the food/drink/service? How was the view compared to the front row seats?

      • ptbnl Jul 9,2022 10:43 am || Up

        The food was both limited choice and very low quality. For vegetarians is was basically just “loaded” nachos, which was a container of chips with some nasty faux-crema squirted over them and (literally) a dozen black beans sprinkled on top. The drinks were ok – reasonable choice of beers/wines/cocktails and 3 tickets. The service was fine, though being mid-row made it harder. It also ends at the 7th inning, which is when they come out scattering unasked for ice cream and candy around their section and collecting tips.

        The view was better than expected, though on less of a rake than the regular seats. There were a surprisingly high fraction of bored kids – so lots of standing up in the view at crucial moments, bouncing in the seat and shaking the whole row, etc. My 10-ish year old neighbor also had persistent and powerful flatulence.

        The entrance – which is classic Coliseum-dingy – is shared with the visitors and the umpires, so at the end of the game you have to wait for them to clear the field before leaving. It did allow for some very up close and personal commentary on the lack of morals of this particular visiting team though.

      The A’s died with Ray Fosse.

      I thought I might watch one game a week the rest of the season but even that looks excessive right now. What’s the point; they’re just killing off the schedule. Any baseball comments I make here are more likely to be about whatever game I’m watching on MLB.tv that night.

        …such as Matt Olson donning the Golden Sombrero in tonight’s loss to Max Scherzer and the Canhas.

        My loss of interest in watching the A’s isn’t strictly the losing. I’m checking the score of tonight’s game which is a typical 8-2 in the 7th inning, and the frequency of scores like that is certainly a problem. But it’s mostly that the roster has basically no players I will care about it a couple of years; it’s a bunch of cheap journeymen filling the uniforms. Having been through the A’s cycles several times in the last 25 years or so, this time around I’m putting them mostly on hiatus until I see some interesting talent again. And, I’m reinvesting some of the time watching baseball differently than I have in quite a while, seeing a variety of the competitive teams such as Mets-Braves tonight.

            I’m also wondering if MLB and ownership realize just how quickly you can just cease to care about the game when your team is actively driving themselves into the ground, particularly in the age of cord cutting. My usual habit of casually having the game on in the background is gone since I got rid of cable. And since I’m so pissed at ownership, I probably haven’t paid attention to a whole inning of any team since May. Same thing when Kaepernick and and CTEs led me to get rid of sunday ticket. I will likely go the rest of my life not caring one whit about football. Quite a change from a once very enthusiastic fan.

            Not sure if that will happen with baseball, but it’s sure trending that way and it pisses me off. Just sell the fucking team.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Jul 11,2022 4:55 pm || Up

      In contrast to many I still watch or listen to most A’s games, though I turn them off in favor of other entertainment more easily. I just like the soundtrack of baseball in my daily life.

      Lacob sounds like he’s ready to write a check to buy the A’s tomorrow if Fisher would sell. I love the way he keeps it nice and friendly while noting that Fisher pissed away millions by not taking Lacob’s offer ten years ago.

        I am the same. If I’m home, and we’re not watching something else on the tv, the A’s will be on. But now I’ll switch away as soon as other shows are on, even if the A’s are ahead, rather than waiting until after the game, and often pay little attention even when the game is on.
        In further contrast to Soaker, I’ve mostly stopped watching any other baseball too, though I still follow the stats, standings and news almost as much as before.

        This is mostly me. And I will say it makes the rare win a lot more fun. When we are winning 90-100x a year you expect it and losses have an impact. Now a win is a big deal.

        I’ve tried fishing around for a 2nd team to get behind, but haven’t solidly found any. Ironically the 1 real good team I would be interested in I can’t watch even though I bought the full TV package. But the Brewers and Padres have been fun at times.
