Royalsgate, 66-68 98

Sure, the A’s are rightly marking 2022 as the 50th anniversary of their most iconic squad, the 1972 Mustache Gang, the Hairs to Cincinnati’s Squares, the first World Title ever brought to Oakland.

But today is another 50 year anniversary. In the wee morning hours of June 17, 1972, a young black security guard named Frank Wills found a door taped open at the Watergate Hotel, spawning a scandal so epic its name gets appended to every subsequent scandal anywhere.

G. Gordon Liddy went on to be a talk show host. Jeb Magruder and Chuck Colson became not-very-penitent born agains. Frank Wills died destitute and alone. He played himself in the 10-second scene in “All the President’s Men, “ though his name was never mentioned.

Today you can book a 50th Anniversary Scandal Package at the Watergate Hotel. $609 for a basic room, or splurge for the “Cover Up” package at $2,000 and up in the specially designed “Scandal Room” (not the actual scandal room).

The Royals are in town. Mike Matheny is already on the Chuck Colson path, doubtless soon to spew Christian nationalist rhetoric while whining about how oppressed people of faith are. Former Royals owner David Glass bore a passing resemblance to Roger Stone (himself a minor Nixonian figure before moving on to more successful sedition). Glass revoked the press credentials of reporters in KC whose questions he didn’t like. He’s dead now, as are pretty much all the Watergate figures, damned for eternity, tortured by the knowledge that the acts which got them prison and disbarment 50 years ago would today get them likes and followers.

Friday-Saturday-Sunday, A’s throw Montas Irvin and Koenig, while the probable page has KC throwing Lynch TBD and TBD, which ironically was also the exact plan Roger Stone and Steve Bannon cooked up in the Willard Hotel Jan 5.

      That’s a pretty big win, as that agency could kill the whole project on their own. The actual vote is still not a sure thing, but the staff recommendation going the right way is a relief.

      It seems like the city is basically on board at this point, with some details of funding still to be haggled over. But as someone said the other day, the remaining points seem pretty minor given the scope of the whole project.

      The other existential threat, of course, is the funding. Wolff famously blamed the failure in Fremont on “NIMBYs” but the real issue there was an ill-timed cratering of the housing market for a project whose funding mainly depended on building housing. It would be quite the stroke of bad luck for the same thing to happen again in Oakland 14 years later.

    Nice that we have the #29 and #30 winning percentages* in MLB at the Coliseum to celebrate this collection of losers.

    *Going into play today; the Nationals are playing a doubleheader vs. the Phillies and Washington certainly should be in this club.

      Somehow there are seven MLB teams with worse winning percentages than the Orioles. Man that’s a lot of bad baseball.

          Outside of Oakland and Cincinnati, is there other tanking or isn’t it just organic and in some cases perpetual suck? Certainly in Detroit’s case they committed $140M to Javier Baez and have -0.2 fWAR and a .524 OPS to show for it.

            O’s fans definitely still think they’re tanking, based on prospects stashed in the minors rather than learning in the bigs.

      I need the check that out, have heard good things. I am deeply steeped in Nixoniana, yet there’s an almost bottomless well of more good stuff out there.

      Nixon was so much more interesting than Trump, it’s kind of a shame he’s losing his spot as America’s villain.

    I got selected to do the Jeopardy zoom audition.

    • Glorious Mundy Jun 17,2022 7:17 pm || Up

      Nice! Yeah, there are a handful of people in a zoom meeting with a proctor. and you take a test similar to the one you already took. The next step after that is a zoom interview with a small group and one of the producers. Then, if you’re like me, they never call you.

      • Englishmajor Jun 18,2022 12:12 am || Up

        I was on Jeopardy! back in the mid-1990s, and from my audition, I got the impression that they like people who ring in quickly with a plausible answer – not right, necessarily, but something that viewers could identify as a good guess. Also, they really didn’t like people who froze or who muttered “fuck” under their breath. At least at that time, they were taping five shows in a day and they wanted to waste as little time with retakes or post-production as possible.

        (I came in third and won a plain-paper fax machine – that’s how long ago it was. The Final Jeopardy! question was in the category of Founding Fathers and I answered Thomas Jefferson more or less at random; the correct answer was Alexander Hamilton. I couldn’t have anticipated that 20-some years later, this would be a gaffe that my preteen great-nieces were horrified by.)

      • Glorious Mundy Jun 17,2022 7:36 pm || Up

        I think the first step is purely the answers. They aren’t looking at you other than to confirm you are a human. In the interview after you pass the test, they do a mock version of the real game where I think it is all about camera comfort.

        Side note: my interview was right after the dodgers won the World Series. The interviewer saw I was from San Francisco and asked if I was upset. I told him I didn’t care because I’m an A’s fan. That’s probably why I never got to be on set with Blossom.

        • andeux Jun 17,2022 9:10 pm || Up

          I think our demographic may be over-represented in the population of people taking the test, compared to the mix they are looking to have on the show.

      I picked Twins-D’backs tonight to root against Bumgarner. The Twins are stinking it up though. I do think the Arizona “Serpientes” uniforms are outstanding, with the exception that the body of the cap being the sand color is too much of the lighter color. The cap should be reversed with navy blue body and sand bill.
