Perhaps this is the boost the A’s struggling offense needs.

I just hope that power cord isn’t the one that supplies the light towers.
(New interface fail: I tried to embed the tweet directly, but kept getting the message “Sorry, this content could not be embedded.”)
The season series with the Twins concludes with three at the Coliseum, with the Wednesday matinee featuring the return of one of our former Athletics. Sonny has pitched in the Coliseum as a visitor once previously, as a member of the Reds in 2019.
Tonight at 6:40: Chris Archer vs. Zach Logue
Tuesday at 6:40: Dylan Bundy vs. James Kaprielian
Wednesday at 12:37: Sonny Gray vs. Daulton Jefferies
Still streaking.
If Manaea’s green glove was too light last year, Archer’s blue one might be too light as well.
Literature has taught me that press boxes are sweaty garbage-strewn pits of despair populated by the cynical and drunk. Excellent possum foraging grounds.
This Bernie Williams on-camera shot would be a perfect time for an appearance.
Can someone explain the purpose of the extension cord?
Cristian, if you aren’t going to hit you can’t make throws like that.
Rally Possum not a lot of help so far tonight. Vince is going to set a new record for use of “consistency” when talking about the offense; he got in three within about 15 seconds in that last soliloquy.
he was saying they were models of consistency?
Laureano Brown and Murphy. Sounds like a walkoff win to me.
Brown and Murphy and Andrus. Sounds like a walkoff win to me.
Oh, now it is on
Murphy and Andrus and Barrera. Sounds like…oh well.
Man, a lifeless performance in a deserted ballpark. I’d like to think it doesn’t get much more depressing but there are 124 games remaining in the season.
77 wRC+, i believe. Pitching is about average, though, so if we just got 9 bats we could be in this thing.
Still a few issues with some oversized avatars in Safari…
what do you mean, “oversized?”
I tried to play around with this, but it looks like there’s something complex with our security settings compared to the local avatar files. I can disable local avatars (and you can use Gravatar to set whatever you want), but want to make sure everyone is OK with that.
Gleaning some stuff from the browser console; possibly total nonsense and/or unhelpful, but just in case:
The image seems to be actually coming through as 35×35, which is right, but some CSS is overriding it to 150×150. Apparently there’s a style.css file as part of the Montezuma theme that we must be using, and in that file the img tag has height/width set to “auto” – removing either of those “auto” directives makes the image go back to 35×35.
Montezuma has a ton of settings (which was good, back when I understood them). I see this:
img {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
display: block;
width: auto; /* makes IE8 keep aspect ratio, adjusts the height */
}
I wonder if we are far enough past IE8 that I should just comment out the width definition and see if it works.
Worth a shot!
Done. Let me know.
In safari everything looks right now.
In firefox (with security protection turned off for FK so the local icons display) ED still looks right. GM and EM are the right width, but slightly oblong (as in Soaker’s picture above but much smaller) so they overlap with the “reply” link below. So not perfect, but good enough.
Yeah, I think there are two separate issues.
One is the security settings: the pages are now https, but the local avatars load as http, so are blocked by some browsers and configs.
The other is that when they are allowed through, they show up too big, which is the thing oblique has diagnosed.
If fixing is not easy, then disabling that feature makes sense to me.
I don’t actually consider it a problem; it’s just an observation. The oversizing doesn’t appear to be an issue in Firefox or Chromium browsers because the gray square shows up instead. I’m fine with not fixing it, and I have no objection to using Gravatar.
No objections here to disabling local avatars.
BTW I went in to try to just delete my avatar, but it seems I’m not allowed to do that. Or at least I’m not allowed to do it without creating a Gravatar account I guess?
I think if you want to switch to Gravatar, there’s an option (but I don’t see it in my profile any more).
A particular set of skills.

One of the guys we got back for Bassitt seems like he could achieve True Athletic status:
Aussie Ohtani, signed
How are we pronouncing Bjay and does it rhyme with Ynoa?
What is the problem with fetterman, again? He seems ok to me. like a Jon tester type.
I seem to have successfully scourged my social media of anyone who has strong feelings about a Democratic senate primary in Pennsylvania. So I don’t know. He seems fine.
I think I read something suggesting that some of the turnaround of the town where he was mayor was more hype than real change.
wiki says:
I’m in the “seems fine” camp too. The Dems could use some populist appeal (especially in states like PA) and it’s always worth remembering FSU’s rule that any politician will seem a little icky if you look too close.
FSU is wise.
I do like that the unarmed black mann that he ran down with a shotgun is rooting for him
People I know who worked up close with Jerry, Feinstein, Pelosi, Kamala, Dellums, Nancy Skinner, Rebecca Kaplan, and many others came away loathing their lust for power and situational ethics.
Big exception is Barbara Lee. Everyone just adores her.
That all makes sense.
batgirl’s veterinarian’s dad’s house is for sale.
You mean, my internet friend’s veterinarian’s dad?
Dallas has a new pet.
Multiple runs!
Barrera played that fly like he was listening to Glen call it.
Well, Barrera wasn’t going to catch that even if he could see it.
Are those sprinkles I see? I think for the safety of all we need to get 3 quick outs and call this game.
Elvis sure brings a lot of joy to the game. It makes me feel bad for wanting him released.
Him and profar are delightful
They would make great additions to your rec leagues, I’m sure.
Yeah, lookit all them runs!
Easy to say in hindsight but Kotsay left both Kaperalien and Zaxon in one batter too long.
that seems to be his MO
So now that we are about at the quarter mark what are thoughts on NewBob? I agree with Ed that he seems to stay a batter too long, but given I spent most of last season complaining that we went a batter too soon I guess it is what I deserve.
Also seems like the pen roles are much less defined-that could be because the cast is new though. Also the sloppiness on the bases needs to get cleaned up. I’m hoping that is just the result of AAAA players and not a feature.
Mostly I think it’s too tough to judge, given what he has to work with.
The hitting in general sucks. Way too many mistakes on the base paths, yes, and in the field. But mostly those come down to lack of talent and/or experience.
The bullpen flexibility is a positive. It seems like he figured out who was effective and who wasn’t pretty quickly, and assigned roles accordingly. Jimenez and Jackson were both non-roster invites this spring, and are now doing a good job in high-leverage innings, while some veterans are in lesser roles.
The experience issue seems dubious to me … it’s not like these guys haven’t been playing the game for many many years, and the base-running blunders don’t seem (to my woefully uninformed eye) to be something that would be particular to the majors.
Some of them are young guys being way too aggressive. (In fact, Barrera just had another of those, going on contact with the infield in and being thrown out easily at home.) They can get away with this more at lower levels, because their opponents are more likely to screw something up. In the majors, everyone else’s ability to execute well changes the risk/reward calculation on those types of plays.
Plus, the ones that really are just boneheaded (a 14-year veteran making the third out at 3b) shouldn’t be blamed on the current manager anyway.
If Barrera is still making as many bad decisions 4 months from now, then it starts to be on the coaching staff.
All that being said, man, this team still stinks.
All we need is a few good arms and about six new bats. Then we’d be fine.
I hope all the sac bunting is just out of desperation with his terrible roster rather than some kind of fetish.
FIRE KOTSAY
I have a pitchfork around here somewhere…
No more Gary Sanchez please.
Zach Logue might want to keep a go bag packed.
Yeah I’ve been thinking from the first time we saw him “I don’t know exaclty good he is, but I think he’s better than Jefferies right now.”
Yep.
He pitched in the game I was in the FRS. I couldn’t see him consistently, but the ball seemed to have good movement.
Just head right back to the airport.
I am glad I had court today, would have been tempted to go to this
So Snirby is even worse at pitching than Pinder is, I guess.
If the W’s play like that every night you can go ahead and schedule the parade.
was stephen vogt on the broadcast?
Heyo, I can read your comments now! Thanks nm (and Oblique) for fixing the avatars! And yes, Vogt was on the broadcast yesterday (and yes, that’s a confession that I watched part of that debacle). Lots of Fosse love, of course.
I’m watching (on hours-delay) today’s Mets game and the announcers have been discussing Max Scherzer being out probably until the All-Star break joining deGrom on the IL…isn’t this exactly the sort of opportunity Beaneforst has been holding Montas in reserve for? They’ve already done a deal with the Mets, and it figures that similar situations will arise over the next several weeks, but I’d think that if they have their sights set on Mets prospects above what they got for Bassitt, something along these lines could be imminent.
Degrom-scherzer-corasco will love to watch Bassitt and Montas get them a ring
RIP Roger Angell
Aw, man. If there’s a better baseball writer to ever do it, I’ve never read them. RIP indeed.
Guy saw Babe Ruth and Shohei Ohtani play. Great life.
Slusser describes how she got the Bay Area chapter of BBWAA to nominate Roger Angell to the Hall, because the petulant New York chapter wouldn’t.
Also I read somewhere that Angell’s father was twice the US Socialist party nominee for President.
Jefferies to DL.
Snead to LV.
Logue and Lemoine recalled.
Return of The Moine
Remember The Moine! Watch out,
HavanaAnaheim.Would knock him out for most if not all of the rest of the season.
I would get a second opinion too
